Assuming I can actually make it work in the sim, would anyone be interested in a historical league starting in 1974?
For those wondering why 1974, that was the first season in which college football was split into Divisions I-A, I-AA, II and III. We'd just do I-A, which had 129 teams in twelve conferences with a lot of independents.
The questions I'll need to get answered to make sure this will be workable are:
1) is it possible to have more than 1 indepedent "conference"?
2) can you modify recruits once they're generated (obviously a must for a historical league)?
3) is there a minimum number of teams in a conference (the Big West had 5 teams in 1974)?
4) is there a maximum numbers of teams in a conference?
5) is there a maximum number of conferences?
I can always adjust the structure, but the question on recruits will be a killer if you can't edit them.
I have basic info and stats for every season from 1974 til the present day. Many of the players are last name only, and I don't have full rosters, just mainly the skill players and defensive standouts, so some of the players will be fictional, but the core of the league will be straight-historical.
I can get first names for anyone drafted by an NFL (or USFL later on) team, and I do have access to the Sporting News' college football previews for each season, so I can pull names out of there as well. Plus I have the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia. Most of the statistical info will come from an old game called Haffner's 3-in-1 which I'm sure some of you are familiar with - it's an old DOS-based game, which has all the teams' skill players (last name only) and I have every season from 1974 on.
If you've got answers to any of the above questions, please post the answer here. Also if you're interested in taking part in the potential league, feel free to post that as well.
