Well, not trying to steal the thunder of anyone else doing a tournament type of diary here but mine will be a bit different. No long match results, at least not at first. Here's the idea and I'm working on it as I type this so I'll lay it all out once I get it together. This will be setup kind of like the NCAA Basketball tournament. 64 wrestlers from all around the world with tons of wrestlers having the chance to make "The Big Dance." Each promotion will have a mini tournament with the winner guaranteed to make the 64 man King of Kings tournament. Though, some of them will transfer more than 1 man depending on the size of the promotion. Then, depending on the results of each tournament the "regions" will be seeded and the 64 man tournament will begin. I'll figure out how many wrestlers from each promotions tournament will transfer when I get it all down on paper. Each promotion with enough wrestlers will have a 16 man tournament, others may have to have an 8 man tournament. The promotion tournaments will be seeded by me attempting to seed each promotion 1-16 or 1-8 and doing it just like the NCAA's. Whew, hope that made a lick of sense. Be back later with the first tournament on tap - the All Japan Tournament.

I've attempted to also not let wrestlers enter this tournament in more than one promotion but this may have slipped on a very few - hopefully not.

AJPW Tournament:

Tried to be objective and go by the "pushes" the game gives the wrestlers so the Main Eventers will always be seeded at the top. It's just like the NCAAs as I've said before - meaning 1VS16, 8VS9, 6VS11, 4VS13 in one bracket and in the other it's 3VS14, 5VS12, 7VS10, and 2VS15.

Without further ado here's how I've sat up round one of AJPW:

#1 Giant Baba VS #16 Toshiaki Kawada
#8 Mighty Inoue VS #9 Atsushi Onita
#6 Genichiro Tenryu VS #11 Akio Sato
#4 Jumbo Tsuruta VS #13 Goro Tsurumi

#3 Dory Funk Jr VS #14 Masanobu Fuchi
#5 Terry Funk VS #12 Ultraseven
#7 Ashura Hara VS #10 Chavo Guerrero Sr.
#2 Stan Hansen VS #15 Mitsuhara Misawa

Round 1

The Masked Superstar VS Brady Boone - 22:30 C Chairshot to head
Tiger Conway Jr VS The Snowman - 10:00 D-
Kendo Nagasaki VS Shawn Michaels - 9:40 C- Running Powerslam
Boris Zhukov VS Art Crews - 6:40 F Commie Sickle

Round 2

The Masked Superstar VS Tiger Conway Jr - 13:40 D Cobra Clutch
Shawn Michaels VS Boris Zhukov - 8:50 E Flag Pole Shot

Final

The Masked Superstar VS Boris Zhukov - 10:20 E Brass Knuckle Punch

Transferring to the Big Dance: Boris Zhukov

Thoughts: It was hard to seed this tourney as they have quite a few great wrestlers that come in every now and then but don't wrestle there regularly. I really thought Eadie would breeze through into the King of Kings Tournament but Zhukov pulled off the upset.

Southwest Championship Wrestling Tournament - Winner only advances

#1 Adrian Adonis VS #8 Scott Casey
#4 Manny Fernandez VS #5 Grappler #1
#3 Gino Hernandez VS #6 Bob Sweetan
#2 Tully Blanchard VS #7 Al Madril

Preliminary thoughts: Even though a small promotion I have a feeling this will be the best tournament so far. Some real good wrestlers from top to bottom. I think Blanchard will walk away the winner in the end.

#4 Manny Fernandez VS #5 Grappler #1 - 9:30 F Piledriver
#3 Gino Hernandez VS #6 Bob Sweetan - 18:50 B- Double Knee Backbreaker
#2 Tully Blanchard VS #7 Al Madril - 18:40 C+ Brass Knuckle Punch

Round 2

#6 Bob Sweetan VS #7 Al Madril - 12:10 F Powerslam

Final

#4 Manny Fernandez VS #6 Bob Sweetan - 22:00 B+ Brass Knuckle Punch

Transferring to the King of Kings: Manny Fernandez

Thoughts: Wow, 3 upsets in the first round. I didn't think Adonis would win but I never thought Casey would beat him. Not completely shocked that the Ragin Bull takes it all but over Sweetan in the final? And the match was actually watchable? Holy cow.

Round 1

#1 Ivan Koloff VS #8 Nick Kiniski
#4 Big John Studd VS #5 Don Kernodle
#3 Tiger Jeet Singh VS #6 Iron Mike Sharpe
#2 The Shiek VS #7 Tom Zenk

Thoughts: I seeded the Russian Bear #1 but I'm not sure he'll pull it out. I see a second round loss for him to Big John Studd. Hehehe, The Shiek takes on Zenk - he'll carve him up like a turkey. I see the bloodbath reunion in round two with Shiek and Tiger Jeet Singh. No clue who'll wind up winning this one though.

Transferring to the King of Kings: The Russian Bear Ivan Koloff

Thoughts: What can you say? Zenk BEAT The Shiek. I guess that's why they fight the matches but that's unbelievable. Then Sharpe pulls off an A* match victory over Singh. Koloff is the first winner to advance from a #1 seed. Still in utter disbelief that Zenk beat The freakin Shiek.

Round 1

#1 Billy Jack VS #8 Jesse Barr
#4 Buddy Rose VS #5 Ed Wiskowski
#3 Rip Oliver VS #6 Dr. Tom Prichard
#2 Matt Bourne VS #7 Joe Malenko

Thoughts: The PNW has an interesting tournament - some good wrestlers in here as well. You've got a young Tom Prichard at a 6 seed and the future Colonel Debeers Ed Wiskowski at the 5 hole. I say Matt Bourne will pull it out somehow.

Round 1

#1 Butch Reed VS #16 Blade Runner Sting
#8 King Kong Bundy VS #9 Terry Taylor
#6 Magnum TA VS #12 Steve Williams
#4 Kamala VS #13 Tim Horner
#3 Ted Dibiase VS #14 Rick Steiner
#5 Jim Duggan VS #12 Crusher Darsow
#7 Jim Garvin VS #10 Chris Adams
#2 Junkyard Dog VS #15 Blade Runner Rock

Thoughts - This has some very young talent that will go on to big things. The bottom two seeds in the tournament will go on to win WCW and WWF World Titles. Terry Taylor may be one of the most underrated wrestlers ever. Dibiase is a technician and Magnum TA could have potentially went on to many World Titles himself. Even Gentleman Chris Adams poses a threat way down at a 10 seed.

Thoughts: This was one good tournament here folks. It upped that great WWC tourney just held prior. Solitario hit Canek with everything but the kitchen sink in the semis and had at least 8 or 9 near falls on him and then Caras caught him in the Octupus and that was all she wrote. Just out of curiosity, when you list a match rating without a finisher, does that mean a DQ win/loss?
For example: in the Nagasaki v. Bond match -- did Nagasaki perhaps get DQ'ed?

Nope, it means I simply missed the finish. All of these matches in the tournaments are Hardcore rules so no DQ's. I didn't want fluke DQ's eliminating some of the best wrestlers.

Final

#1 Jerry Lawler VS #2 Austin Idol - 20:40 B- Big Bear Hug

Locked into a top 32 spot in the King of Kings - Austin Idol
Also guaranteed a spot - Jerry "The King" Lawler

Thoughts: I knew this promised to be a good tournament and while it did have a few bad matches it more than made up for it with 3 A* matches in the tournament. In the Leduc/Eaton matchup they used every possible weapon except an artificial limb. The Lane/Lawler match may be THE match of the qualifiers - it will be hard to top that. Sweet Stan hit the King with everything and Lawler kept kicking out at the last second. He finally nailed Lane with the chain shot and put him away. Leduc was dominating Idol until he got hit by a fireball quickly ending what would have more than likely been an A match if it had went much further. This tournament will be hard to surpass in quality but I'm sure the WWF, MACW, GCW, WCCW, and Mid South boys will all have something to say about that.

Winner and guaranteed a top 32 spot in the King of Kings - Billy Robinson. Also transferring are Nick Bockwinkel, Greg Gagne, and Rick Martel.

Thoughts - Holy crap Hogan lost to Gagne. Not only that but Gagne kicked out of the Big Legdrop. Billy Robinson had some cheering him on right to victory over the technician Bockwinkel. Hogan and Gagne pulling out an A* match and Gagne pinning the Hulk may be the biggest surprise by far of the qualifiers. Well, that or Tom Zenk pinning The Shiek in an earlier tournament.

#3 Terry Gordy VS #14 Sweet Brown Sugar
#5 Kevin Von Erich VS #12 Brian Adias
#7 Iceman Parsons VS #10 Buddy Roberts

Thoughts - At least one Von Erich should be in there and I think Hayes has a pretty good shot to the final four as well. I predect one of the top 4 seeds to take this one though.

Round 3

#1 David Von Erich VS #6 The Greak Kabuki - 16:40 D Von Erich Claw
#3 Terry Gordy VS #2 Michael Hayes - 19:50 C- Elevated Hammerlock

Final

#1 David Von Erich VS #3 Terry Gordy - Piledriver through Table

WCCW Champion and guaranteed a top 32 spot - David Von Erich.
Also transferring are Terry Gordy, The Great Kabuki, and Michael Hayes.

Thoughts: The first round didn't have any bad matches at all. Then the second round stunk. Couldn't believe Magic Dragon upset Kerry in the opening round - I figured he'd be in the top 4. The final match between David Von Erich and Gordy was pretty good but David dominated the entire contest.

Love how the Von Erich fury came out in David's win vs. Gordy. :) A Piledriver through the table sounds about right.

And I enjoyed the AWA section of the tourny. Unless Verne was entered, who else of the qualifiers could have met in the finals? Bockwinkel vs. Robinson is a super match-up, as evidenced by the A rating it received.
If it was not going to be Bockwinkel, I'm glad that Robinson won it. Now is time for Bock to turn it up. He is still me favorite for the entire ball of wax.

Go Greg, Go!
I really don't care if Greg gets squashed into the pavement in the next round. In my opinion, his beating Hogan is the highlight of the entire tournament so far.

Poor Rocco, though. He put on the most entertaining matches of the tournament and he is booted out for his troubles. Curse you Chic Cullen! :)

Great job on this. It has been very entertaining reading so far.

Winner and guaranteed a top 32 slot - Jack Brisco. Also transferring are Wahoo McDaniel, Bob Orton Jr, and Roddy Piper.

Thoughts - Well, MACW shows exactly why it was the hotbed of wrestling at the time with so many great matches and upsets. Top to bottom it was stacked but nobody thought Nelson Royal would beat The Nature Boy in the opening round. Also, Brisco taking the entire thing was a bit of a shock. Actually, the 4 that transfer were all a bit of a shock to me. Steamboat shows he is the man by giving us 2 A* matches before he departed. His match with Slater was one of the best matches of the entire preliminaries. Wow again at the four that transfer from MACW.

These are the guys that have earned their way into the tournament through winning the right to be there. I'm giving TWO more guys the chance to win their right to make it to the tournament with two "dream" tournaments of the guys that were upset or didn't make it for one reason or another. These will be two 16 men tournaments with the winner of each earning two precious slots but neither will be guaranteed a top 32 spot. Then, the readers of this diary over the next two days have the chance to cast their votes for 3 men and the top 3 all will also make it into the King of Kings. So, after I have the two "dream" tournaments seeded I'll post them. I'm randomly letting my computer scramble the wrestlers I pick out so no particular seedings - that way I won't have to try to play favorites. They are lucky to even get another chance at this point so I don't feel sorry for anyone.

Mil Mascaras VS Abdullah the Butcher - 18:50 C Flying Double Chest Chop

Final

Adrian Adonis VS Mil Mascaras - 22:40 F High Cross Body

Winner and guaranteed a wildcard slot in the King of Kings - Mil Mascaras.

Thoughts - Well, this produced some very interesting matchups. Good matches as well - the first round saw a doozy with Rollerball nearly getting the best of Hogan. Round two saw some classics as there were three A* matches in that round alone. The matchup between Hogan and Adonis in round 3 was fun to watch as Adrian finally put Hogan to sleep after getting several near falls and he kicked out of the Big Legdrop. Mascaras sawed through the competition in the tournament and had no memorable matches. He won - but the fans hated his work. The final match was horrific as he killed Adonis dead and was at high energy when he did pin him.

Ric Flair VS Carlos Colon - 31:10 A Cradle Suplex

Final

Lizmark VS Carlos Colon - 26:50 D Cavernaria Clutch

Winner of tournament two and guaranteed a wildcard slot - Lizmark.

Thoughts - Holy crap, two randomly generated tournaments and both of them had the winner coming from the EMLL. That is one tough bunch of hombres I take it. Lizmark pulls off a big upset here by taking down some great wrestlers on his way to the King of Kings. He beat Dynamite Kid, Tiger Mask, Terry Funk, and Carlos Colon. Talk about running a hard guantlet. Flair looked to be on a mission destroying his first two opponents before having the match of the tournament with Colon and losing. Will Flair get one of the three reader votes or will he be sitting at home watching the King of Kings tournament like so many others?

THE KING OF KINGS TOURNAMENT

I'll lay out the plan here. The voting can take place until Wednesday, noon Eastern Standard Time. After that I will tally the votes and place three more men into the King of Kings. I have already decided I will not allow any of the three men to be one of the top 32 seeds so I can try to seed the top 32 and post it tomorrow.

Here's how the tournament will work - just like the NCAA Basketball tournaments in the USA. There will be 4 "regions" that I will seed them by. I will try my best to be impartial and figure out the best way to do this. The four regions will be as follows:

North America North
North America South
Europe
Far East

This doesn't mean that everyone in the Far East tournaments will be guys from Japan. It just means there's more of a likelihood there will be a few Japanese guys in there. North America North should see a couple of Canadians in the thing - stuff like that.

15 hours before the voting is finalized. Right now here's how it looks:

Flair virtually a lock with 4 votes

Hogan, Race, and Funk all have two votes each.

Steamboat and Rollerball have one vote and are grasping for their last breath.

Tie needs to be broken because we've got three guys going for the last two spots - who gets in?

In case the tie is not broken then I'll have to figure out some fair strategy to pick who gets in.

Ok with the voting ending I had to be forced into a decision I did not want to make. Since there was a deadlock with 3 guys trying to get the last 2 spots I had to make a judgment call. I am trying to look at this objectively.

Race - A veteran of the sport and many time world champion. The tournament wouldn't be complete without Race involved so I give one of the two nods to him.

Now, the other. Hogan is coming along and WILL be the biggest superstar the sport has ever seen in a couple of years. Right now he's still chasing the AWA World Title though and hasn't done much in the wrestling world besides do the crossover Rocky III. If this were Dream Tournament 1985 scenario it would be a no brainer. Funk is a former NWA World Champion at this point and a legend in Japan. I HAVE to give the nod to Funk in this situation because it's 1983 and not 1984 or 1985.

So, rounding out the field for the King of Kings - the three wild cards are:

Ric Flair
Harley Race
Terry Funk

And HOGAN you have. An error on my part as Terry Funk was already locked in due to qualifying in his AJPW preliminary. DUH! Well, now Hogan is the other one in without any controversey. Seedings to be released later today.....

That's cool. But did someone end up getting unjustly left out of the second-chance tourney? Funk took up a spot in there. I'm going to have to call the legitimacy of the whole competition into question now! Alright, just kidding. Seriously, how did we miss that? You typed his name out a bunch of times on the qualified list near the top and even seeded him in the main tournament!

I'll start some first round matchups tonight if possible. First, let me explain my seedings and how I done them. I "tried" to put wrestlers in regions they'd be more likely to wrestle in. How I picked the seeds though is I looked over the roster and picked out the 4 #1 seeds, then the 4 #2 seeds, the 4 #3 seeds, all the way down the line. THEN I saw who I had seeded the 1's for example and looked at the regions. So, I throw Inoki into the Far East region as it was a tossup between he and Hansen. I figured Inoki was more popular over the big pond so I made him the rep for the Far East. I then looked at the remaining three and put Andre in the North since that's the WWF's territory and Von Erich in the South since that's close to the WCCW territory. Hansen got what was left - Europe. I done that all the way down the line sometimes picking the Europe rep first to try to strengthen the region a bit. I can look over the regions and see that, to me, the Far East and North America South are the two strongest but I did attempt to make this as realistic as possible. Should be some great matchups and I hope the tournament comes out well.

The Far East division looks to have been the most fun, despite having a couple of low rated matches. Bockwinkel advancing as he did forced a smile. Who is 'the dirtiest player', again? Heh.

No real surprises in North America North. That next round there might be the most entertaining of the bunch considering the names involved.

The Lawler vs. Mascaras must have been a great one. Not only the rating, but just the fact that Lawler advanced!

And poor Lismark. Looks like TCP1 will have to go with the only logical choice to win it all: Nick Bockwinkel! :)

Second round coming tonight but here's first round thoughts from me:

Europe Region:

Hansen dispatched of Barnes very easily beating him pillar to post.

The fans weren't much into Chosyu/Zhukov and who could really blame them.

Fernandez and Cowboy Bob Orton put on a good old fashioned brawl with Fernandez getting the duke after the fluke roll up pin. It was building into being an A match and a win for Orton.

The Europe fans were overjoyed to see Sanders and Big Daddy meeting in the King of Kings. Sanders pulled off the big upset and advanced onward.

Marty Jones and Atlas was lackluster and Jones just outsmarted and outworked the big man.

Lizmark set himself up with winning a wildcard tournament outright and was rewarded with a 5 seed. He then goes on to stub his toe and lose to the talented Ted Dibiase. It was better than the C rating.

Rhodes/Reed was a very good contest and it looked like for about 10 minutes that Reed was going to take Dusty out. Dusty just kept kicking out of pinfall attempts and finally locked in a Weaver Lock to end it.

Rich was upset by the Loch Ness Monster in one of the two biggest upsets of round #1. Wildfire put up a good fight but the big man just took him out when he finally caught him with the Samoan Drop.

Europe is shaping up to be, in my opinion, the Stan Hansen show. If he don't make it to the final four I'll be very surprised. If he beats Chosyu then he has the winner of Sanders/Fernandez and he should easily dispose of either of them.

The bottom half should see Dibiase or Rhodes emerge to give Hansen a good fight in the great 8.

North America South highlights:

The best matchups in round one came out of this region with two A*, a B+, and B- match. Lawler getting the win over Mascaras in one of those classics was a shock. Flair just isn't all with it I'm telling you all. Oates nearly beat the Nature Boy and pulled off a heck of an upset. Flair may make a second round exit via the Von Erich claw. Idol/Kabuki surpassed all expectations for sure pulling out a classic brawl. Bob Armstrong and Wahoo also had a good back and forth match. Every one of the 2nd round matchups here could be great one's with Von Erich/Flair, Caras/Idol, Satanico/Lawler, and McDaniel/Brisco. Should be interesting and I'm not even guessing who comes out of this region the victor.

North America North highlights:

Gagne nearly pulled off an impossible upset of Andre but just came up a bit short. Really mostly stinkers in this region as for round one. Hopefully round two will be better when we see Andre/Backlund, Muraco/Piper, Martel/Johnson, and Hogan/Robinson clash.

Far East:

Another hotly competitive region that saw some great matches, especially the nearly 40 minute dual between Brody and Tsuruta. Brody got upset and is now out with Jumbo moving on to take on Yamazaki who was being dominated by Gordy until he caught him with a Triangle Choke surprisingly ending the match. Wow, look at these second round matchups: Inoki/Race, Funk/Bockwinkel, Fujinami/Baba, and Yamazaki/Tsuruta. You could have easily had Inoki, Race, Funk, and Bockwinkel all in the final four of the King of Kings itself - and two of those guys won't even make it past the second round.

Tony Atlas was, and still is, certainly not the "brightest bulb on an X-mas tree".

I think that the 2x4 that Jim Duggan (another not so bright worker) brought to the ring was smarter than Atlas.

Sweet 16 coming up tonight but first some thoughts on the second round.

Europe - Chosyu shocks the world by being beaten nearly to death and dominated the entire match only to catch Hansen with that Short Arm Bar and the bad man from Borger tapped - crazy. Fernandez and Sanders put on a good show but the European fans were none to pleased to see Fernandez get the duke in that matchup. I thought Dibiase/Jones would put on a better match but not surprised that one of the most technically gifted wrestlers in the world in Dibiase advanced. The battle of the belly fat resulted in Stardust exiting the tourney early. I had really thought it may have been him and Hansen to settle the score in Europe but both are now out and Europe is wide open.

In the NA South bracket Flair downright killed Von Erich in that match dominating the entire contest. It was never in doubt as the Nature Boy hit some sort of form going into the sweet 16. Austin Idol pulled out another A* match as he's now 2 for 2 in the King of Kings for A*matches. When he pulled out that fireball the fans went nuts for that finish. Lawler and Satanico didn't have the most awesome of matches as their styles didn't gel well and it turned out pretty sloppy with not alot going on in that match. Brisco has Wahoo's number as he has now beat him in the MACW final and now knocked him out in the King of Kings tournament itself.

NA North saw Andre and Backlund put on a whale of a show with Opie nearly getting the win. Andre was just too much though as he butt dropped Bob into oblivion. Soulman Rocky Johnson showed the fans something by at least getting this far. Some may argue that Martel is just not ready for prime time and shouldn't be in the second round but the fact is that he was and Johnson won so he's going to the sweet 16. Hogan just overpowered Robinson and even though Billy fought him to the end he never had anything for Hulk. Both men were wore down but Robinson just couldn't finish the deal and Hogan hit that leg drop and it was all she wrote.

I was very upset with how Inoki/Race turned out in the Far East. I thought it stood a chance to be the best match of the entire tournament and Inoki just dominated him from bell to bell. Bockwinkel and Funk was back and forth but not many pinfall or submission attempts led to the lackluster rating. Baba dominated Fujinami and Tsuruta had the biggest lopsided win of the entire tournament when he decimated Yamazaki.

While I can see Idol getting past Flair, Lawler beating Brisco is darned surprising. It is pretty cool that the Memphis guys advanced together, though.

Thoughts: Well, the "regions" were finished up here and we had 4 pretty solid matches in this round. I expected Dibiase to give Chosyu more of a matchup. Idol and Lawler had another CLASSIC southern brawl that ended with fire. Andre and Hogan had the typical big man matchup and it looked like Andre would pull it off but it wasn't to be. Inoki took a brutal, brutal beatdown from Baba. Baba had 9, yes 9 near falls in this contest. Inoki just kept bouncing back and finally caught Baba with the Yinziguri Kick to put him away.

Semis and finals coming tomorrow, I promise :)
