2012: A Year of Notable Releases
Friday, Week 2, June
Despite the UFC continuing to grow as a company in what has been another great year, with the good comes the bad. This year, several notable fighters have been released from the UFC following money disputes. Top names like Wanderlei Silva, Matt Serra, Demian Maia, Sean Sherk, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mirko Filipovic, and then-Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans have all entered free agency this year. But despite the losses, new UFC President Scott Avatar is confident about UFC's long-term success.
"It's been tough this year. I don't wake up and say 'hey, we should get rid of our Light Heavyweight Champion.' But sometimes, you have to do what you have to do. At the end of the day, we offered guys like Rashad, Wanderlei, and Cro Cop great deals, but they think they're better off somewhere else. And that's fine, I can't force them to stay. But they should know that the best competition in MMA is right here in the UFC. If they figure that out down the road, I'll be more than happy to bring them back. But I'm not going to dwell on the past, I'm going to look ahead to the future, where UFC will continue to be the number one MMA company in the world."
When asked about the future of the Light Heavyweight Championship, Avatar responded:
That's up in the air right now. Losing your champion the way we lost Rashad was a tough call, but he felt he was worth more than we were offering him. Luckily for us, we have a deep roster in every division and finding a new champion is going to be tough, but it's not impossible. There's a bunch of names in my head right now, but nothing's definite. You can expect an official announcement within the next month, though.
All in all, despite losing current and former champions, the UFC continues to look good as evidenced by the cards they've put together, one of which will take place tomorrow night in Las Vegas, Nevada, when we get to witness UFC 135: Akiyama vs. Silva. For those interested, here's the lineup:

UFC 135: Akiyama vs. Silva
Saturday, Week 2, June
PRELIMS
Steve Cantwell (8-3) vs. Stanislov Nedkov (11-1) (Light Heavyweight Division Fight)
Willamy “Chiquerim” Freire (15-3) vs. Efrain Escudero (15-1) (Lightweight Division Fight)
Court McGee (11-3) vs. Rich “The Guido” Attonito (9-4) (Middleweight Division Fight)
Pascal “Panzer” Krauss (9-1) vs. Claude Patrick (13-1) (Welterweight Division Fight)
Yasuaki Miura (5-4) vs. Buddy Roberts (7-2) (Heavyweight Division Fight)
MAIN CARD
Lightweight Division Fight
Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira (17-1) vs. Kurt “Batman” Pellegrino (16-5)
At only 21 years of age, Charles Oliveira is certainly a future Lightweight Champion. With victories over Mark Bocek, Terry Etim, Dennis Siver, and Clay Guida, Oliveira was well on his way towards a title shot. However, in his first major test, former and now current champion BJ Penn easily dominated the youngster, taking him down at will and getting a unanimous 30-27 victory. Looking to bounce back, Oliveira will face Kurt Pellegrino, who’s coming off a quick submission victory over Takanori Gomi. If Oliveira wants another shot at Penn, the first step is getting past Pellegrino.
Welterweight Division Fight
Rick “Horror” Story (13-3) vs. Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy (23-9)
The key to this fight is going to be momentum. With six straight wins in the octagon including a quick TKO on Matt Brown, Rick Story finds himself in a fight with a man who seems to be on the opposite side of the spectrum. After being outclassed by Georges St. Pierre, Dan Hardy has struggled in the UFC, losing a quick fight to Thiago Alves and then being unanimously defeated by Matt Brown -- the same man his opponent quickly took care of. It will be wrestler vs. striker as Dan Hardy looks to get back to his winning ways while Rick Story looks to continue his. Story has the momentum on his side, Hardy doesn’t. We’ll see if that’s what decides this fight.
Heavyweight Division Fight
Shane Carwin (13-2) vs. Chris Tuchscherer (22-3)
Chris Tuchscherer has been on a roll the last few fights. After being quickly beaten by Brendan Schaub back at UFC 116, Tuchscherer has come back with a vengeance. After being Stefan Struve in a decision, Tuchscherer has won three straight fights by TKO in the very first round. His opponent, Shane Carwin, has also shown dominance in the past. Despite his loss to Brock Lesnar, and then a quick one by submission by Heath Herring, Carwin managed to win a unanimous decision over Cain Velasquez. If Carwin wants another shot at the gold, he’ll need to beat Tuchscherer first.
Light Heavyweight Division Fight
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (19-6) vs. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz (17-9-1)
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua found out the hard way that winning the championship is only half the battle. In his first defense, Rashad Evans made quick work of Shogun and easily TKO’d him in the first round to reclaim the title. In his first fight since losing the title, Shogun lost a decision to Rich Franklin. His next opponent, Tito Ortiz, is in a similar boat. Since returning to the UFC at UFC 73 in his draw with Rashad Evans, Ortiz has seen very little success. Despite TKO wins over Brandon Vera and Matt Hamill, he has lost to Lyoto Machida, Forrest Griffin, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and Ryan Bader. At 37-years-old and with only one fight left on his contract, this is do or die for Ortiz. Can he bounce back and defeat a fellow former champion? Or will Shogun show the world why he was once king of the light heavyweight division?
Middleweight Title Fight
Anderson “The Spider” Silva (c) (29-4) vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama (15-2)
Anderson Silva is unbeatable. If his 14-0 record doesn’t prove it, his submission victory after being beaten for 4 ½ rounds by Chael Sonnen should. Still not impressed? How about defeating Chael Sonnen in a rematch by knockout in the first round, and doing the same to Nate Marquardt? Silva has had little trouble since coming to the UFC, and he looks to continue his reign of dominance as he takes on veteran Yoshihiro Akiyama. With victories over the talented Michael Bisping and young up-and-comer Gerald Harris, Akiyama is enjoying a short winning streak… for now. At this point, the UFC is doing all it can to give Silva a challenge. But Silva shouldn’t be looking uhead to his next defense, becase anything can happen inside the octagon.

Saturday, Week 2, June
16,725 attendance for a gate of $1,338,000
325,571 buys for a revenue of $1,302,284
PRELIMS
Stanislov Nedkov (12-1) d. Steve Cantwell (8-4) via unanimous decision (Light Heavyweight Division Fight)
Efrain Escudero (16-1) d. Willamy “Chiquerim” Freire (15-4) via unanimous decision (Lightweight Division Fight)
Rich “The Guido” Attonito (10-4) d. Court McGee (11-4) via unanimous decision (Middleweight Division Fight)
Claude Patrick (14-1) d. Pascal “Panzer” Krauss (9-2) via submission (guillotine) in 3:23 of round 1 (Welterweight Division Fight)
Buddy Roberts (8-2) d. Yasuaki Miura (5-5) via unanimous decision (Heavyweight Division Fight)
MAIN CARD
Lightweight Division Fight
Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira (18-1) d. Kurt “Batman” Pellegrino (16-6) via TKO in 1:48 of round 3
Charles Oliveira showed the world he’s for real with brilliant displays of jiu-jitsu en route to his victory over Kurt Pellegrino. Oliveira won the first round by showing great skill on the ground, sweeping Pellegrino with his back against the cage and then using a triangle attempt to get side control. The second round saw Pellegrino take advantage of his wrestling ability and take down Oliveira, controlling him on the ground for a majority of the round. But in the final round, with the score 19-19, Oliveira took matters into his own hands by getting Pellegrino on the ground, taking side control, and finally mounting him before pounding his way to a TKO victory.
Welterweight Division Fight
Rick “Horror” Story (14-3) d. Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy (23-10) via TKO in 2:04 of round 1
Rick Story must have had made plans later in the evening because he wasted no time beating Dan Hardy. The wrestler proved to be too talented for “The Outlaw” as he took him down in the opening minute, got side control, and hammered Hardy until referee Herb Dean put a stop to it. Hardy’s UFC career might be over while Story is a win or two away from a title shot.
Heavyweight Division Fight
Shane Carwin (14-2) d. Chris Tuchscherer (22-4) via unanimous decision
Unlike the preliminary fights that went to decisions, this one had the crowd on their feet the entire time. Shane Carwin proved to be the superior wrestler as he took down Tuchscherer at will and defended each of his opponent’s attempts. Carwin nearly finished the fight in the first round but Tuchscherer weathered the storm and actually landed an elbow that cut Carwin above the eye. But Carwin wouldn’t give up and despite fighting exhaustion in the third round, managed to hang on and leave with the victory.
Light Heavyweight Division Fight
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (20-6) d. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz (17-10-1) via TKO in 2:47 of round 1
Tito Ortiz doesn’t have it anymore. Both of his takedown attempts were met with punches that rocked the Huntington Beach native. Former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua had no trouble in the fight, quickly countering a jab from Ortiz with a barrage of punches that threatened to knock him out. What’s next for “Shogun” remains to be seen. Perhaps a shot at being the new Light Heavyweight Champion? It’s unknown at this point. What is known, however, is that Tito Ortiz’s career in the UFC is finished.
Middleweight Title Fight
Anderson “The Spider” Silva (c) (30-4) d. Yoshihiro Akiyama (15-3) via TKO in :21 of round 2
Yoshihiro Akiyama managed to win one round against Anderson Silva. Unfortunately, he had four more rounds to fight. Silva was careful with his opponent in round one, who took advantage and managed to score a takedown on the champion and smother him for the rest of the round. Silva wasted no time in the second round, countering a jab and quickly unloading on Akiyama to secure yet another successful title defense and pick up the thirtieth victory of his career. Now, at age 37, it’s unknown what will bring an end to his title reign -- an opponent or retirement.
Fight of the Night: Shane Carwin vs. Chris Tuchscherer
Knockout of the Night: Rick Story
Submission of the Night: Claude Patrick

News & Notes for Week 4, June
The buyrate for UFC 134 was over 1.5 million. But the numbers are in, and UFC 135 had a buyrate of only 325,000. Despite a difference of over a million buys, UFC Owner Scott Avatar isn’t worried.
“It was bound to happen. We give the people a lot of shows. At $45 a show, it adds up, and with the economy the way it is, buying every single show isn’t an option. We’re not going to slow down or hold back, because there’s still a lot of interest in UFC. But at the same time, it is something we’ll keep a close eye on.”

MAIN CARD
Light Heavyweight Division Fight
Rich “Ace” Franklin (30-5) vs. Matt “The Hammer” Hamill (9-3)
In a rematch from UFC 88, Rich Franklin and Matt Hamill go toe to toe in the octagon. With decision victories over Stephan Bonnar and the dangerous Mauricio Rua, Rich Franklin is living proof that age is just a number. Matt Hamill will be coming into this fight with perhaps a bit of “ring rust.” The last time we saw “The Hammer” in the UFC, he was defeated via TKO by Tito Ortiz. In a battle between two of the best 205 pound fighters in the world, one thing’s for certain -- you’re going to get your money’s worth.
Middleweight Division Fight
Patrick “The Predator” Cote (14-7) vs. Chris “The Crippler” Leben (23-8)
These two fighters have something in common -- TKO decisions against Wanderlei Silva. Cote was beaten in round 2 by “the Axe Murderer” but Leben made quick work of Silva in their fight. And after being controlled by Demian Maia for 3 rounds in a unanimous decision loss, Leben looks to rebound with a win over “The Predator.” Having lost three of his last four fights, Cote needs a win if he wants to stay in the UFC, and Leben will need to string together a few wins if he wants a shot at the Middleweight Title. Two men, both coming off losses, and only one can win. Game on.
Heavyweight Division Fight
Sergei Kharitonov (19-4) vs. Junior “Cigano” dos Santos (14-3)
After winning seven straight fights, Junior dos Santos challenged Brock Lesnar for the Heavyweight Championship. But Lesnar was able to take down his smaller opponent and quickly finish him before dos Santos knew what was happening. Dos Santos managed to finish veteran fighter Cheick Kongo via submission, but in a rematch from UFC 117 -- this time when the title was on the line -- dos Santos failed to beat Roy Nelson, losing by TKO in the first round the same way he did to Lesnar. His opponent, Sergei Kharitonov, is 2-0 since entering the UFC and has won his last four fights by submission. Three years the elder, the bigger and stronger Kharitonov is a win or two away from a title shot. It will be power vs. technique in what is sure to be an exciting fight.
Lightweight Division Fight
George Sotiropoulos (14-2) vs. Evan Dunham (12-1)
Undefeated in the UFC, Australian-born Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert George Sotiropoulos is ready for a shot at the gold. With impressive decision victories over Kurt Pellegrino and Joe Stevenson and a submission win against Melvin Guillard, Sotiropoulos has finally found himself right where he feels he belongs -- the main event. On the other side will be a man who’s been as close to champion as you can be. Up until his quick submission loss to Gray Maynard, Evan Dunham was undefeated in MMA, with wins over Sean Sherk, Tyson Griffin, and Ultimate Fighter winner Efrain Escudero. But at only 26 years of age, Dunham still has things to learn before he can become a champion. A win over Sotiropoulos might put Dunham back in the title picture, but it’s easier said than done.
Welterweight Title Fight
Jake Shields (27-5-1) vs. Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez (c) (25-4)
Jake Shields did not start out his UFC career the way he planned. Despite being the superior grappler, Shields was submitted in his UFC debut by Martin Kampmann. Shields has rebounded since, submitting Mike Swick and Matt Hughes before winning a split decision over Josh Koscheck. Shields will look to use his wrestling superiority when he takes on the champion. After a humbling defeat at the hands of BJ Penn, Diego Sanchez returned to the welterweight division where he was upset by John Hathwaway. Sanchez put the loss behind him and focused on doing what he does best -- winning. That seems to have worked out pretty well for Sanchez, who since the loss, has knocked out Paulo Thiago, Matt Serra, and the man who beat dominated him -- BJ Penn. And at UFC 132, Sanchez shocked the world when he caught Georges St. Pierre in a guillotine and submitted him to become the Welterweight Champion. In his first defense, Sanchez is not going down without a fight. Will Jake Shields do what he came to the UFC to do and win the title? Or will he find himself in a nightmare he cannot defeat?

I'm going to delay this show for a day or two in hope I'll get some picks. UFC 136 is before the Fight Night card everyone picked.

MAIN CARD
Light Heavyweight Division Fight
Rich “Ace” Franklin (31-5) d. Matt “The Hammer” Hamill (9-4) via submission (armbar) in :59 of round 1
Rich Franklin made quick work of Matt Hamill, hitting a punch out of nowhere that dropped “the Hammer.” Franklin quickly armbarred a stunned Hammill to win a very short fight. Afterwards, Franklin said he wanted a title shot against whoever walks out of UFC 138 with the belt.
Middleweight Division Fight
Chris “The Crippler” Leben (24-8) d. Patrick “The Predator” Cote (14-8) via TKO in 1:19 of round 2
The first round saw the two UFC veterans go toe to toe with strikes, both men managing to connect with jabs and leg kicks. But in the second round, Leben’s power was too much as a counter punch knocked down Cote, and from there, “the Crippler” pounded away until referee Josh Rosenthal stopped the fight. Leben said like an elephant, he never forgets, and he wants a shot at the man who knocked him out in his UFC debut -- Anderson Silva.
Heavyweight Division Fight
Junior “Cigano” dos Santos (15-3) d. Sergei Kharitonov (19-5) via unanimous decision
Junior dos Santos isn’t ready to give up his spot as a top heavyweight in Mixed Martial Arts, and he proved it by hanging in there against a superior grappler in Sergei Kharitonov. Dos Santos managed to knock Kharitonov down with a punch early in the fight, and also score a takedown to win round one. The second round saw Kharitonov show off his wrestling skills and pin Dos Santos against the cage for most of the round and control the fight when it went to the ground to tie up the score at 19-19. But in the third round, dos Santos took down Kharitonov and avoided a guillotine and then a kimura attempt, racking up the control and running down the clock to leave with a unanimous decision victory.
Lightweight Division Fight
George Sotiropoulos (15-2) d. Evan Dunham (12-2) via TKO in 3:25 of round 3
It was Evan Dunham’s fight to lose, and lose he did. After a uneventful, but close first round that saw Sotiropoulos take Dunham down and do nothing, followed by Dunham pinning Sotiropoulos against the cage and doing nothing, Dunham won the second round by keeping his opponent on his back the whole time. But in the third round, Sotiropoulos took down Dunham, and after avoiding an armbar attempt, got to side control, and then mount. Dunham gave up his back, and Sotiropoulos took advantage of Dunham’s exhaustion by punching away until the fight was stopped.
Welterweight Title Fight
Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez (c) (26-4) d. Jake Shields (27-6-1) via TKO in 1:21 in round 5
If championship fights went three rounds, we’d have a new champion. But they don’t, and Diego Sanchez is still the Welterweight Champion. Heading into the fight, Sanchez knew his best chance of winning would be on his feet. Jake Shields also knew this and took down Sanchez at will, controlling him on the ground and avoiding numerous guillotine attempts. When both men were on their feet, Shields was very comfortable, avoiding plenty of knockout punches. With a probable 40-36 scorecard favoring the challenger going into round number five, Shields looked like he was well on his way to a decision victory. But Diego Sanchez has the heart of a champion, and he showed it by countering a jab with a flurry of punches that trapped Shields against the cage, stopping the fight and giving Sanchez his first successful title defense. Sanchez thanked Shields for such a tough challenge in his first defense and told the sold out crowd he’s never going to quit as long as he’s their champion. Jake Shields credited Diego for hanging in there and having good defense on the ground. He was upset with himself for getting tired in the fifth round and not trying an immediate takedown.
