CRIME SCENE

The man walked into the grizzly scene, looking around quickly. He wanted to make sure he saw everything before the police arrived and -

"Hey! Wha'do'ya think ya doin?"

He stopped and sighed. Of course he'd be here.

"I was expecting you."

"Wha do think, I'm just going to let you poke around, just because you have some 'right to know'?"

"I was hoping..."

"Yeah, well while you were doing that I was doing work. Look around. Looks like meat locker."

The description was accurate. Body parts where littered around the living room, and blood was flung haphazardly. It looked as if a beast maimed the poor victim.

"Savage..."

"This ... guy ... is un-****ing-believable."

"I'll stop him."

"Or maybe he'll do us a favor and stop you. Either way stop poking around my crime scene."

The man stood frozen. He NEEDED to investigate this area to complete his story. His line of thought was broken by a mug flying by his face. It shattered on the wall and fell to the ground.

"I said leave."

HOSPITAL

The bizarre behavior continued. She took some time away from that to look at the new victim. Interesting.

Elsewhere a woman flirted. Nothing new there.

VIRTUAL WORLD

Oh yeah! He was destroying this newbie! Taking 'em out... Runners Style!

"What happened?"

"He just called. Partial success."

"Interesting, you going to help?"

"Nah, he can take care of this one, boss."

"Okay, you do know what this means?"

"I told you to stay out of my business."

"I'll stay out of your business when the entire truth is reveled."

The man's phone appeared to be hacked. He looked at the display and a face was talking to him. It was green and looked like it was made of lines of code. The voice was scrambled and deepened, there was no way to guess who it was.

The Ripper...strikes again. The next victim will be close to you."

"Get the hell out of MY office and get that ... thing out too."

We can't have that. Don't want to make things easy for the Ripper. Unless of course, you're the Ripper. In which case that would be cause for the rest of us to celebrate. Actually, not sure we want that reglardless of who you are. Heads exploding can get very messy.

Well this makes it simple. Toasty, you are The Ripper, since The Ripper communicated with a hacked phone in the opening write up. Also, I can't understand what you are saying.

Paws, can you be Toasty's translator, since you seem to understand how to speak numbers. :p

First off, Brother Century. Let me help you out. Unless I miss my guess, Toasty is confined to posting in leetspeak.

Which would seem to fit your theory that he's the Ripper. But you know, I certainly doubt Astil would give us this game on a silver platter by giving Toasty that posting restriction and making it say "Hi I'm Toasty and I'll be your scum this evening." Even if this was designed with the thought of being a training game.

Still, it's a good enough jumping off point for Day 1. What say you, Mr. Toasty?

My inclination would be 8-3-1. That way you see all three sides and yet keep it pretty simple. Probably the indy being a survivor as it's most common indy role.

Just a note. Other than write ups and vote counts anything dealing with the workings of the game, or proving anything a player wishes is not up to the mod. A mod will NEVER comment on something dealing with the game. They will answer questions pertaining to roles, or something that's not understood, but never anything to change the flow of the game.

Well, a serial killer with a Ripper-like mentality probably wouldn't have henchmen or be inclined to listen to a leader like Mafiosi would be. The closest he might come to that is if he were a Jekyll and Hyde type. But even that is portrayable in just one role. Not to mention that SK's tend to be indy in game terms.

Well, the historical Jack used letters to taunt the police. The encrypted phone calls would be like the modern equivalent of that. So ties to the historical Jack or not, the methodology is similar.

Take a deep breath and let it all pass behind you. Don't post and say

"I'M CALM, EVERYONE ELSE IS CRAZY"

Just be the bigger man, apologize either publicaly or better yet, settle things in a civil way privately. Who knows , you can even make a friend. I remember Self and I got into a huge fight in game, but we ended up becoming great buddies (relatively speaking) in the end.

I will throw this in that normally M_L_T is the nicest, sweetest, and most popular person on these forums for very good reason. She's like everyone's big/little sister (depending on ages and/or actual relations).

But I know that things in her RL recently have justifiably made here a little...explosive, so to speak. She's a little tense, you pushed the right/wrong button and sent things into Defcon 3 nuclear attack mode.

But trust me...everything will settle down and when the fallout clears you'll see that this really is a welcoming, inviting community with some really great people, M_L_T most definitely included.

I hope you stick around and join the rest of us in the "awesomely cool kids" club :D

But I know that things in her RL recently have justifiably made here a little...explosive, so to speak. She's a little tense, you pushed the right/wrong button and sent things into Defcon 3 nuclear attack mode.

But trust me...everything will settle down and when the fallout clears you'll see that this really is a welcoming, inviting community with some really great people, M_L_T most definitely included.

Actually the best disguise for the Ripper would probably be the one who is supposedly leading the investigation against him. To me that would make the detective a prime suspect as he could control or suppress any clues or info.

Not sure how that would work for a MAfia game though. Think it would be a little one sided.

I can see a paranoid investigator, but not the killer leading the investigation.

You know it's funny. Since you are new, it's tempting to educate you on the phenomenon of joke votes and just let things go. But at the same time, this is a good point. Last game, I started to press a guy on the basis of something similiar to this. But he had the cover of comedy and explained the misdirection move away on that basis. Only for us to discover after the fact that he was scum all along. I like your instinct on this. Whether it bears out or not, it's wise not to take things for granted in this game. You have me curious. Why would he feel the need for misdirection?

Actually I don't know about the wild goose chase with the context, Brother Century. Thanks to him linking us to the Wiki I know my character is from the game and I'm inclined to believe most if not all of use are. If Neil is scum, him giving us the game context could be the one part of his story that's true and therefore designed to get us to believe him. In the Cartoon Chaos game a couple years back, I was scum as Brain from Pinky and the Brain. And yet being a cartoon fanatic, I was sharing all manner of context for the self-same purpose. I'd never heard of this computer game until Neil mentioned it. So I'd have just assumed we were all random names of Astil's choosing a la Catfish Creek without the Wiki.

Now, for the record, and I note: I had not said once that I did not want us to do anything. Just that speculating on a theory, and branching on that theory as fact (which doing that in a newbie game, you're bound to have people consider it fact) would be very misleading to the town. That's what I was getting at when I told MLT this. MLT made the assumption that I didn't want to do anything at all, and it seemed like the town ran with it. Being this jumpy is not a smart move for the town to make, in any game.

Mich and MLT went on to discuss why talking instead of doing nothing is good. Cappy then agreed. Dragon then made a statement, that I was trying to "misdirect" the town by "accusing someone else" to "deflect the attention away from me." Might I add, that I had already stated it was a joke vote? It was not in any manner to deflect attention away from me. If you actually read my postings so far, you'd realize I've done nothing to "go under the radar" as you so accuse. Your vote really has no basis nor grounding in any truth of my statements. In fact, to make sure nobody else claims such an accusation:

I have no idea what to tell you. It's been confirmed by three different people (out of 12, in which really only 6 are being active... that's pretty significant) that this has helped people. Anyway, I think the more the town knows on day 1 the better off they will be. Figuring out how many town/scum there are day one is the best thing we can do. IF we are wrong it still gives us SOMETHING to work with.

As the town we are uninformed and need to gather as much as we can. The scum know how big there group is. We don't. By talking and gathering information we can figure that out. Only scum would not want that to happen on day 1.

I will say this though that you can't rely on canon as a crutch. For example, my character is on the "cast list" but what I do is rather different from what I do in the game.

On a side note, I'm sure the game is fun and neat and all, but reading the plot synopsis just makes me think "man, that sounds totally lame..."

But that happens when I read plot summaries of most games. I mean seriously, FFVII. Great game but man oh man when you see the plot written out...you can't help but roll your eyes.

Here's the problem with what you're saying, Neil. And the reason why I never, EVER engage in joke votes. The only thing anybody knows the know on Day 1 is what's in their PM. Everything else is up in the air until night comes. Bringing both the risk of death and potential collaboration by cold circumstance. Any potentially halfway reasonable seed can grow into a bandwagon. And any bandwagon the scum seizes onto in large enough numbers can become a speed lynch. One's vote is a sacred trust in game terms and is best for the town used
in that manner.

As for the misdrecting charge, I was referring to Dragonmack's point about the joke vote. It's rather rudimentary and doesn't take behavior like what yours potentially was into account. But it's not technically wrong. Granted, in my most contexts, I would have just filed his impression away and just watched you until I decided whether there was anything there or maybe he might be guilty of deflecting himself. But this game is a different animal and has to be treated accordingly.

Oh and BTW their are pro-town roles where you might need to misdirect or deflect people in order to secure your safety and be able to be useful later in the game. Saying you could be misdirecting us this early doesn't automatically mean you're thought to be scum. It just means you're a viable route to explore for information.

Well, I brought it up for two reasons. There is the justifying of my vote. You are correct there. I was demonstrating why I was breaking from my usual pattern of behavior and jumping to vote earlier than normal. It had nothing to do with relating you with past people to your detriment. I agree that would be unfair to you.

But let's also remember the purpose of this game. This is a training game and Dragonmack is a rookie. The dude had a good impulse in not taking anything at face value. As such, that deserves rewarding.

Now don't go getting all excited and assuming I think you're scum and want you lynched. I don't. If someone tried to rush you to the gallows, I'd pull back my vote quick. I don't want to speed lynch someone who could be town. I want as many townies to live as possible and for the city to be safe. The sooner the town can sort out who's who in our minds, the sooner that can happen.

And, BTW, I'm not directly suggesting you brought up the background as a deflection tactic. My main point in the Cartoon Chaos anecdote is to demonstrate that you giving us the canon and being dangerous aren't mutually exclusive. It's definitely a potential point in your favor. Okay seriously, I'm not NEW to the game of MAFIA. Just on this site. Please, stop giving me lectures about random things like this. I understand that. Well, to be frank it's a combination of both. I like my role now, but I also always live with the principle of not wanting to have a claim fest day 1, and then have it a battle of the claims.

Not in every game. You have a difference in the way you play town, and in the way you play scum. I've seen you claim you were town in many games and wind up scum, and the way you play that game is very distinct. You actually fall into what I call the "Missing Mafioso Integrity" or the MMI. It's when you appeear to be active and scum hunting, without actually bringing any valuable information to the table. As I relook through your posts, you've done just that. You've brought "common sense" points to the table, but as far as truly questioning and looking into people you haven't even tried. Why? Is it because you already know who's town, because you know who's scum with you (if there is a team)?

Have I voted? Nope.

You should rephrase this. It's not really about the votes you make or place. The fact that you're playing passive is not about the definite vote. It's about where you put your efforts. You haven't put any efforts into actually scum hunting, just to appear that way.

It's called payback. I outed him for being The Ripper, and so he in turns try to make me look like it. Yeah... that's not scummy at all.

Okay, you throw a name out there, that you have history with from before, and then say it's a joke. You follow it up stating that you both voted for each other as payback, and then you implicate Toasty. No mention of it being a joke here, but I presume that you think it's assumed. So your question is what is the misdirection part. By you and Jackalbane voting for each other and then claiming it's a joke or petty revenge thing, you want people to not pay attention to it, or shrug it off, thus drawing any suspicion away from you. Yet, you slide toasty's name in there as a wildcard. Yes it looks like a joke and not to be taken seriously, so therefore most veteran players would probably shrug it off. But then I have the luxury of being able to not be encumbered with previous actions when evaluating events. So to me playing off your vote as a joke, subtly linking someone else's name as an accomplice, and then using the defence of not being serious looks like misdirection to me.

MLT:

Now, for the record, and I note: I had not said once that I did not want us to do anything. Just that speculating on a theory, and branching on that theory as fact (which doing that in a newbie game, you're bound to have people consider it fact) would be very misleading to the town. That's what I was getting at when I told MLT this. MLT made the assumption that I didn't want to do anything at all, and it seemed like the town ran with it. Being this jumpy is not a smart move for the town to make, in any game.

Mich and MLT went on to discuss why talking instead of doing nothing is good. Cappy then agreed. Dragon then made a statement, that I was trying to "misdirect" the town by "accusing someone else" to "deflect the attention away from me." Might I add, that I had already stated it was a joke vote? It was not in any manner to deflect attention away from me. If you actually read my postings so far, you'd realize I've done nothing to "go under the radar" as you so accuse. Your vote really has no basis nor grounding in any truth of my statements. In fact, to make sure nobody else claims such an accusation:

I'm capable of doing a lot of things, it's in no means evidence to support a lynch on me however. You're also capable of it, in fact I could think of a few who I would say are capable of it in this game. This statement of yours really is of no help to the town except to further the "riot" of the lynch without directly touching on it.

MLT then goes on to discuss with Mich some more about how horrible she is at spelling. (A possible way of warming up to people, which by the way is what scum would want to do... especially to new kids, they are usually the most vulnerable to "developing friendships".. just a heads up.)

MLT states directly after her post: "I've earned it, so I expect to come on to all scum lynched and the game over. Get to work minions." Again, playing very stand off ish as she says "Hey, I'm town! Lynch the scum!" Without really saying anything. A very passive thing to do, which isn't good when you're town... if she is.

Cappy Boy then comes in and places a vote on me, asking why I would feel the need to misdirect the town. Could you point to me where I misdirected? I googled my characters name and the wiki came up for that game. So I posted it here, thinking it'd be of some help and two others obviously were finding it supporting, so in order to call it "misdirecting" would be a very long shot, if that is what you were refferring to. If it was the vote I made, I had already said several posts above, it was a joke vote. NOT real.

I have no idea what to tell you. It's been confirmed by three different people (out of 12, in which really only 6 are being active... that's pretty significant) that this has helped people. Yet you say I'm trying to send the town on a wild goose chase? Just because YOU can't see how your character is related, does not make me scum. Nor does it make me misdirecting. I simply threw information that I found out there.

Cappy again seems to bring in some past experiences and the times he was burned in the past, to justify his own vote against me... or so it seems. This doesn't make sense. I have never played with you in the past, therefore in order to relate me to the past people, would be unfair to myself. For the record though, I too have never heard of this game. I wiki'd my name, which I had already stated earlier if you actually looked at my posts, which you seem to have missed.

With that said, right now my gut, intuition, and a little bias would tell me to go after:

Vote: MLT Just because this IS how she played last game with me when we were both scum. It's not "mere speculation" nor is it "ideas that she COULD do this" it's the fact that she did. The exact way. By playing passive. Which does not benefit the town, and as a veteran in a rookie mafia game, she should know this.

There, that's my defense. I refuse to role claim, or name claim this early. Sorry. If it doesn't fit your ideas, lynch me. But I'm not scum, and so far I've only proven myself helping the town, not "misguiding" it or "misdirecting" you. If we follow my path, and lynch MLT, then she turns up scum, I can tell you who would be her partner based upon the plays so far. However, I can assure you if the scum are smart, there's a good chance I'll be dead tonight rather you lynch me or not.

I can't speak for the other's reasonings, I can only say that from what I know about good mystery and pyscho killer psychology is that they don't want to 'fly under the radar'. The person wants attention, and what better way than to be in the thick of things. While everyone believes that 'scum' would lie low and not draw attention, the fact is the best place to hide is in a crowd, and no one ever suspects those leading the groups. Which is why I thought the Detective would be a good suspect from the beginning, a view surprisingly supported by the wiki you linked. In short, I voted for you because I think that the most likely to be to culprit isn't someone whose innocouous or quiet, but is more likely to be one of the more vocal.

Let them lynch me should they choose to do so.

I'm not a "newbie" though, to clarify... again. Also, not one of those 4 have any real case against me. If "vets" lead the town to make a mistake, then those "vets" will be to blame. Out of those 4, 2 were on the same basis, which neither was a real case. 1 was a joke vote, and the 4th said he doesn't even want to lynch me.... so I'm unclear why ANY votes are on me right now, to be honest.

It's far too early to really build a case against anyone, as almost no information is known. My early choices is based purely on what I have read and seen as the common tactics of the villains, and so far your actions have come across to me like someone using those tactics. Case in point , this post with the indifferent 'I don't care if they lynch me' and denial of any evidence.
Yes, someone who is innocent will do the same thing, but so would someone who was only 'pretending' to be innocent. So really this didn't do anything to support a case in either direction.

Just to clarify, I didn't expect to be playing this game, and the sign up thread shows me on the bottum, without enough roles to support me being in this game... I didn't realise I was in it till I got home from work today, and read Astil's PM, I'm just now catching up.

At work, we have a "special" visitor we've been getting ready for, and I've been working all nights kind of "Undercover" trying to get the place looking right. She is there right now, and I had a good 12 hour night/day last night and this morning. I actually only left because I needed sleep... and I actually did sleep (haven't been sleeping alot lately till today). This will continue for me, as I need to get back there within' the next few hours, untill the weekend, in which I should be off all weekend (I hope that becomes a reality).

Many things make the moon cry, wild accusations aren't one of them.

Actually if you look at my scum roles. CFC, when did I help the town? Not at all, infact DB and I almost had to come to blows before that game ended (I <3 u DB) :)

In most other games I've been recruited into the scum group so those can't be used, the only other game I remember starting as scum was Family Guy, and I didn't do much there either.

Another post from you, your trying to figure out the game... Did you actually read the opening night write-up? There seems to be half the roles right there.

Looks like we have a pretty good set-up to me... Just need to let everyone do their jobs at night, and see what we can put together.

Plus, I see some potential verb trouble here. But I won't harp on it too badly as that would not be sporting right now.

That's the same thing with the joke vote. The minute someone else piled on votes concerning JB, I'd pul mine back. However, in order to say you don't want me lynched, or you don't want to be on the bandwagon of my lynch, is very contradictory to the way you just played, no matter how you look at it. If you're hopping on the band wagon (say you didn't, but facts prove you did), you should be willing to see the guy lynched if he does not prove a valuable case. I did. You still have yet to make a case against me other then your own mere speculation.

Sorry but this is just so much bloviation in my ears. I voted for the purpose of information. And despite your attitude:

I agree, the problem is some say their roles are from the game, mine is not. Dj you know me I hate to lose day time. Day ones are a good place to start asking questions. If nothing comes of day one the ones who need to make the right choices at night may not.

He was about to log in when he decided to take a trip first. He wasn't expecting her there.

And so he was distracted.

She shook her head feverishly. She had heard about this guy.

The woman relaxed ... then panicked! Not her supervisor! She chased after him.

Without noticing someone else there, he went to work trying to do all he could.

I wouldn't specifically say the skills I got came from school, though school could have helped me with them. However, I can't truthfully say rather or not my character has ever spent a lot of time in school.

Out of curiosity, why DJTheFunkChris? Going by the thread so far, Cappyboy had voted for Neil and Toasty.

Possibly a night result. Neil could've tracked Dj or watched Cappy and know that Dj targeted cappy.

it sounds like he is asking if there would be some kind of effect if you were targeted, either on you or the person targeting you? Similiar to you asking Neil if there was an effect for him being targeted.

I am really not following the chain of events here. If Wrestling Century supposedly is the one with evidence against DJ, why wasn't he the one starting voting against him? Neil throws his name out there without any real explanation, a couple bandwagoners follow suit, and then Wrestling Century jumps in. And if DJ is one of the bad guys, why go after Cappyboy? So far they haven't had any interaction.

Like I said earlier, Cappyboy had voted for Neil and Toasty and Praguepride is the one who had voted for DJ in Day 1 so where is the connection between Cappyboy and DJ?

I also think it's weird that Neil claimed he was going to end up the first victim, but instead its the person that steps up to say that Neils first vote might not have been a joke and instead a strategic move. But then again that may be too obvious.

However, by conversations and by earlier voting there does seem to be a connection between Neil and Toasty, so that makes me suspicious of Toasty. So
