hello,
this should be awesome. no wait. i will be awesome.!!
ive seen them all. i was there at the begining when there was no weight class, no rules, no time limits....
i even was at one way back when at cobo arena here in detroit. shamrock vs sveren i think. they stood there for 20 minutes doing nothing much. the crowd was reckless and there were more fights in the stands than in the ring!
but this will be awesome. i cant wait.
anyone else out there remember the first, second, third, etc...UFC events?

Yeah they were completely crazy if I remember and a few of the bouts were rather boring. Some were all out slug fests, but then you would get a submission master who would put a hold on a guy for 30 min.

yea, gracie is awesome in his day but once he went to the ground, it was time to get a drink and some food cause you knew it was going to take a while.

His longest match through UFC 4 was the finals against Severn who is generally just a wreslter at 15:49. Then of course the 36 minute draw against Shamrock who was afraid to really engage fully, and took the draw. SInce then he has had 6 fights: 15 minute draw, the legendary and controversial fight with Sakaraba, draw against Yoshida, another 2:13 victory, another draw, and the last fight against Matt Hughes.
But you were talking about the first UFC events, and as you can tell... it didn't take long at all.

the first 3 were nice due to the no holds barred thing, but they really had mostly guys on an amateur level, and they ended up making the sport illegal in most of the country, it was the nhb aspect that ended up getting it banned and the government has yet to re-review the sport since the rules were implemented

The guys they had were not at an amatuer level, they were black belts or champions of their individual craft which is what the first UFC's were about, which style was the best. While there were "no rules" there really wasn't that much dirty fighting, and John McCain led the charge for them to get banned, who is a boxing fan which is interesting to say the least.
After Zuffa bought it and worked together with the Athletic Commisions to put rules in place it started back. The government is a joke concerning MMA and most sports. They adhear to the Athletic Commissions, if they cared what congress had to say they would not have continued with shows after they were "banned" in some states and off cable (DirectTV still carried them).

they were amateurs in the sense that they were all strong in one area, and it made for some sloppy fights
there were some dirty tactics (but none that would justify the reaction people held)
the two i remember are hackney punching jo sans balls about 9 times and joyce gracie pulling kimos hair

The hair pulling thing was the reason I said 'not much', but still... and to say they were amatuers in the sense they were all strong in one area is just ludacris seeing that we are talking about the first UFC's. Gracie was strong in one area too, his area was showcased because that is what it was designed around. You wouldn't find a MMA Fighter of today back then.
