GIMP gives me the same outcome. It seems to be something to do with rendering on a black bg in Poser. I did a recent Jack Bruce render on white and was able to smudge the hair well outside of the original render... the only problem is, the .png displays the dreaded white outline (which wasn't a problem in that instance, since I was posting on white anyway). If I render on black, I don't have to worry about the white outline, but it seems to restrict the postwork.

I've taken your .png and put it into GIMP and doing some quick smudge strokes, this is what i've come up with:

The smudge strokes are outside of the original render (hence the extreme hairstyle) and there's no white line around the .gif either. I'm not sure how you can go wrong if you're using GIMP?

My guess would be that sebsplex may have copy and pasted the render into GIMP rather than opening it from the computer. I tested with Photoshop 7.0 and C&Ping gives you the black background, but saving it first and then opening it doesn't.

Well, the 1975 mod and now the mafia thread have proven to be quite time consuming, but that doesn't mean I haven't been able to do any rendering for WMMA in the meantime. Expect me to ramp up production on these now that I've pretty much done my part in mafia and the CV1975 1.1 is soon to be released. :D

After that and they'll still get into the database, but all the major characters will have been assigned by then, so any new ones will end up either a minor characters or "future" fighters.

Well, actually all 4 are supposed to be Japanese, so I'm not quite sure which you mean (I'm assuming upper right, he's got the actual "Japanese" facial morph going on). I just have gotten used to varying the facial features on Japanese workers after the '75 mod, just to keep everyone looking unique. Regardless, include them as whoever you wish. :D

I do think the upper left guy deserves to be considered for Japanese status though... kinda wolf-like, reminds me of an aged Hajime Saito. :p

Funny you should mention that Adam... you have no idea how excited I was when I logged on to Daz's website two days ago and saw that Kozue Kawashima's hair was 50% off!

I just couldn't pass that up... just like I couldn't pass up Valiant's hair for the same deal (upper left guy) :D

Yeah the side-burns are a little off but your tats are looking great. I've always admired your ability to make tats look good. I'm still working on that.

I've been going through the pictures sent in so far, organising them a little (they'd all been just in one big folder until now :p), and I'm pleased to say that if we take into account the handful that have been in this thread but haven't been sent to me yet, it looks like we have just about enough for the initial database, so that's great news. :)

As I stated before, I'm leaving the deadline for "first wave" character submissions as the last day of July, any sent after that will either be fitted in around the others, or added as a Future Fighter.

What I would ask is that if anyone is still planning to do more, there are two areas that are really lacking - Japanese and South American fighters (males), particularly the Japanese as I've barely got enough to make any decent sized divisions for the Japanese promotion in the game. So any characters that could help plug the gaps would be very, very welcome!

You might need to repose the picture on the left. I seem to remember adam saying that it looked odd when you had sides of people missing.. im thinking the render gets superimposed on a background and the missing elbow REALLY shows up

I'm well aware of it. I plan on doing any postwork that needs to be done before I convert them to .gif format. In fact I should be able to get a new batch to you sometime this week.

I am a new to all of this. Where the heck do I start to create some of these models? Do you download the models in a program and customize it? This stuff looks so much fun, but I have no idea where to start.

I am a new to all of this. Where the heck do I start to create some of these models? Do you download the models in a program and customize it? This stuff looks so much fun, but I have no idea where to start.

The two software packages used are Poser and DAZ|Studio. Poser is $250 and DAZ|Studio is free.

To start with you should download Studio from the DAZ3D website (http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/0/0/-/?refid=530735730). Once you've done that, load Studio, click on Help > DAZ|Studio Quick Start and go through the tutorial. That'll give you a good grasp of the basics and what you'll be expected to do for creating characters.

If you're still interested in creating renders after doing the tutorial, here's what i'd do:

1. If you're looking to create lots of renders, join the Platinum Club (http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/platinum/0/-/?) because you'll save yourself a lot of cash down the line. It gives you access to member-only forums, special offers, 30% discounts on DAZ Original items, hundreds of items for $1.99 and you get a ton of free stuff when you join.

2. For male renders, go for Michael 3 (http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/shop/itemdetails/-/?item=1558&spmeta=rq) (he's free to download) but you'll need the head and body morphs (http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/shop/itemdetails/-/?item=3009&cat=71) to manipulate the model. (if you've joined the Platinum Club you'll get a 30% discount on the morphs)

3. Freebies - I think the best place is Renderosity (http://www.renderosity.com/), just go to the Free Stuff section. Note: The majority of Poser stuff works in Studio so have a look in the Poser section too.
On the DAZ website there's also a forum called the Freepozitory with lots of freebies in.

First Render with a Tatoo

I like the short texture Trell and just as a minor suggestion for the tattoo, fiddle around with the layer opacity a little before you add the tattoo to the texture. Depending on the tattoo, this will make them look more natural as opposed to if someone had spraypainted them on via a stencil or something. I found that with some of my earlier work, especialy with more solid black tattoos. Like I said, it depends on the tattoo that I'm using, but I usually apply them at about 85-95% opacity.

The "first wave" of the database is now pretty much done, so thanks to everyone who contributed. If anyone does have time to do others, here are the areas that could use pumping up:

* Announcers \ Colour Commentators; currently I have absolutely none :p I'd really like to at least have the people who start employed in these roles to have pictures, so if possible I'd like 4 or 5 Western characters, and 1 or 2 Eastern characters.

* Women's fighters; this is mainly to VBigB - the women's part of the game is my favourite at the moment, because the renders are so uniformly excellent. If there's one criticism it is that the free agent pool is a little shallow, so any female renders (Western or Eastern) that could be used for that would be ideal.

* Standard fighters; it'd be really nice to have a few more "normal" fighters. By that, I mean guys who aren't heavily muscled, overly fat, or anything like that - just guys who would make excellent additions to the lightweight to light heavyweight divisions.

I'm not trying to be negative, because I think your skill is developing (and since I have no abilities at rendering I'm not about to give you advice on it) but I seem to recall Adam saying somewhere he likes to create his own universe with names and gimmicks and all. I'm not sure naming some of your renders and then inserting their name and/or gimmick onto their fighting-wear will get your images into the MMA default verse.

Or maybe you're happy with them being personal additions.

Beeker is correct; Chris, I think your work so far has been very good, but adding names to the pictures is problematic. Not just because it effects the naming schemes already in place, but as you might have seen in the developer's diary, fighters get regenerated into new characters - so even if I was to use the names you've given them, eventually they are going to be used by other characters, and the names won't be the same.

I think your work might benefit from being more minimalistic anyway - your characters, especially the latter ones, have an impressive realism to them, I don't think they need a lot of tattoos or "extras" to give them personality, they already have it.

I must say that I didn't think of the regeneration when I made my renders. I never really thought my renders would be in the default database. I just made them for personal use and I just uploaded them here in case others wanted to use them in a similar way. However, if you want to use any of them in the default database I would, of course, be honored. Also, if you want to use any of the ones with names or nicknames on their shorts/bodies I would gladly remove the names and redo the renders.

Arms need to stay inside the picture dimensions. The only thing going out of frame should be from waist down.

The last information I saw on the status of the database was back in Post # 609 by Adam:

The "first wave" of the database is now pretty much done, so thanks to everyone who contributed. If anyone does have time to do others, here are the areas that could use pumping up:

* Announcers \ Colour Commentators; currently I have absolutely none I'd really like to at least have the people who start employed in these roles to have pictures, so if possible I'd like 4 or 5 Western characters, and 1 or 2 Eastern characters.

* Women's fighters; this is mainly to VBigB - the women's part of the game is my favourite at the moment, because the renders are so uniformly excellent. If there's one criticism it is that the free agent pool is a little shallow, so any female renders (Western or Eastern) that could be used for that would be ideal.

* Standard fighters; it'd be really nice to have a few more "normal" fighters. By that, I mean guys who aren't heavily muscled, overly fat, or anything like that - just guys who would make excellent additions to the lightweight to light heavyweight divisions.


That was quite a while ago so I have no information on if he still needs more renders. Obviously I'm still cranking some out when I can. Back around September 11th Adam did ask Chris West to zip some of his renders up and send them. I guesss what I'm saying is it can't hurt to post a few samples up to see if Adam is interested in using them.

I know that we've already got Buddy Garner, Raul Hughes and Mike Watson but where's the love for Billy Russell and Nene Ebina? I'd love to see someone render these guys up for the default data too, it'd be a shame for them to miss out. :)

You need the morphs for your different character's... Like Vicky3 Michael 3. They have a vicky 4 out now as well. Look in the millenium collection, or the models seperately, you should see what I'm talking about.

Nice renders for a first time. The cool thing about them is that they are special. The original renders are all in the same line. The 'blob' dude, the vale tudo dude and the huge dude would really add versality in the database. The girl also looks cool, but I don't think there's greco-roman for women in the olympics :rolleyes:

In xvnukervx's last post does anyone else think the girl looks like Nikki Sanderson? In the picture on the left at least, not so much on the right. Not the body, obviously, but the face.

Anyway, great job on the renders everyone, I might download a free program and see if I'm any good but I doubt it. It took me long enough to become competent in Photoshop, this stuff is probably far too tricky for me.

Unfortunately those last renders I posted in Jpeg format, and because of a lack of a transparent background...they cant be used as WMMA renders. But making them definately did help with my render design and understanding how DAZ works :D
