View Full Version : "IFL" style leagues

Quite a simple question really, I'd like to get a feel for how important people think that having IFL-style league formats in the game are.
For those of you who don't follow MMA, the IFL is a relatively new promotion that runs a league format. The league consists of teams of MMA fighters, headed by a "legend" as their coach, and points are gained by the results when one team faces off against another in a series of 1 on 1 contests.
The reason I am asking is that incorporating the league format into WMMA is proving very tricky, simply because it's so different from how "normal" MMA promotions run that it's almost like writing two games at the same time. To be clear, my intention (as stated before) is currently still to try and have this feature in the game, however, if it can't be done without making the game experience quite clunky and unfriendly, I want to know how much of a problem its removal would be for people.

I think that the "IFL style format", while it would be nice, is kind of an anomaly in the world of MMA for now.
If it makes it into the game it is a cool addition. If not, it's not a major part of the MMA world as of yet and will not be a game killer.

It'd be nice to have in, but I don't mind too much if it was left out.

It is a nice addition, but frankly speaking i know little about IFL and their format. Maybe in a future game it could be added if the IFL idea picks up.
If it is excluded, for me it would be fine

Much like the three above me I would like to have it but if it's to much of a problem to put it in I could live without it.

IFL is quickly becoming popular. In the IFL hotbeds like Illinois, people that follow UFC generally follow IFL as well. Plus you can see it on Television, so that helps. I think once it gets a cable television deal it's really going to blow up and possibly be bigger than the UFC.
I'd personally like to see it in eventually but I'd much rather be playing the game first and foremost. It could be an add-on at a later time.

I have a somewhat concering opinion, it would be a nice feature to have in the game. But, if it's not added it wouldn't destroy the game itself.

Adam,
I think its important to have in, since its a viable promotion strategy. I just would never use it because I am not a fan of the team format. But, yes I believe it should be included if possible...
I still watch it because i like watching MMA fights but yeah I dont like the team concept (sorry happy hour please excuse if post is dujmb lol).

I agree with Dana White when it comes to IFL. Novel or not, MMA is not a team sport and I frankly can't stand the IFL (it's on the same level as BoDog for me). If there is time/room leave it in, but I'd gladly sacrifice it for pretty much anything else

I'd love to see that kind of structure. But, if it's a absolute nightmare to do then I guess it can be left out. It's not like it's going a be a deciding factor to whether or not I buy the game

I for one would find that feature a sinch to make me by the game. Without I still may or my not get the game though...

this is something that i would like IF it did not greatly incress the time it takes to release. If it takes two extra month to come out because of it then i would say no.......this is a style of mma that is not huge yet but is a style that is becoming more main stream.
I think having this feature would prove to be a big seller with hardcore MMA fans. I for one would love to see it.

I voted for "If it's absolutely necessary to leave it out, then I guess I can live without it...". I'm not an avid MMA follower but the format of IFL sounds good, and I think it would be really nice to have some variation on the standard promotion format. But I'm not depending on it.

Maybe it can be included in the next version of the game. For now we should focus on the "real MMA"

How's is IFL, "fake" MMA?

What i really meant was that IFL is a new format and somewhat unusual in MMA terms.
One on One MMA is a more regular format.
It is not that i wanted to disrespect IFL.

IFL is still "One on One MMA", it's no different to say a group of fighters like American Top Team or Team Quest training together, apart from the added fact that the team gets points and wins a ring if they win at the end of the season.
That being said though if its that hard to implement I'd leave it out, it's not going to be a gamebreaker considering the IFL hasn't really took off yet.

I would also like to see it in, but it depends how difficult it is to implement. If it hinders the game in anyway then leave it out.

My thought on the matter is that if it is going to delay the release more than a week, save it for an update.
The IFL concept could be ran through without having the 'league' set up that way. Simple have 5 fights and assign each fighter to a team. Not perfect, but if it causes the game to change to a 2008 release date... I don't want it. :p

I voted basically it'd be nice to have but dont care if its left out...
Out of Game-wise lol...
I think at least I would enjoy the IFL better if a couple things happened:
1) Scrap ALL the team names... i dont care about the anacondas vs the sharks... sounds like a bad flag football league
2) Use teams that the coaches actually train. Militech should just bring guys that all train at MFS and MFS should be the team name. Bas should bring a team that trains at Legends MMA and that should be his team name, etc...
3) Show their fights live...somewhere....
I think if those 3 things happened it would become more interesting to me...at this point for some reason I just can't get interested in it.

The problem with the IFL is they are basing there success on getting support for each of the teams and that's just not happening, you can't say "Hey Chicago I know the majority of you have just started watching basic MMA but here's a team concept and your supposed to support the Red Bears... no there's no one you've ever heard of before"
In terms of including it in the game I think it's very desirable, done right I think the team concept has a lot of mileage.

I think this could make it easier to program into the game too. Each team wouldn't be based on a specific coach who just seems to pull random fighters, but rather the camp. And depending on how much money the promotion offers the camp for a team the quality of fighters can be higher or lower.

The IFL is beginning to be a major part of Mixed Martial Arts, and honestly, I think having the IFL in could make the game have that extra step that will make it a must buy.
Ya i think it is a must add it really is different and nice i saw a few shows . The team format looks nice the one i watched was in a ring and was in a huge arena .
Question : are normal ifl fights in a cage or ring?

Militech uses the team Quad City Silverbacks as a way to put over (I have been playing to much TEW) his students.

So I have been thinking that this could really be a good think to have in. I voted that this could be out but the more I think the more I want!

I would personally really love the feature, but it would be foolish to say I abolutely need it. :D
But imo there has got to be a feature that supports 'teams' and actually does something with it, unlike the 'faction' option in TEW which does absolutely nothing. :P

I actually had a change of heart on this matter. If it's really complicated to code then don't bother. IFL is a pretty unique concept that's unlikely to be copied, should anyone want to make a team-based MMA league in WMMA why not whip out the notepad. It's not like keeping the scores is an extremely hard job for the player to do.

I have never seen the IFL, so it is really hard for me to say.

IFL is fun. And you can easily just duplicate this with the notepad feature that will be included with the game, like in all of Adam's games, - though you don't have the 'feature' in the game.
Imagination time!
I still feel it's not really required to make this a great game.

I'd leave it out. Worry about the real MMA. MMA is not a team sport. IFL needs to relize this. It might get popular but never will it be at the same or anywhere near the level UFC is at.

I don't think the IFL concept fits the game. The one thing I dislike about the IFL is that the fighters are matched based on the teams, not on the fighters.
This can create terrible mismatches, as well as boring fights.

When i made a similar statement that we should focus on "real" MMA, i got swamped!
We shall wait and see this time. But i agree
