View Full Version : Question about Ref Stoppage

Will there be a stat bar for how quick a ref stops a fight? Like we see Big John McCarthy of the UFC will let a fight go on for a while giving every opportunity he can for a fighter to defend and get out of danger... But on the other hand, there are other ref's out there that will stop a fight the first chance he sees... I think it'd add a bit to the realism and could definately make a fight unpredictable... I was justy curious.

Also sorry if this has been covered in a previous thread.

Thank you.

No. It can be assumed that all referees will do their best to stop the fight at an appropriate time, and so it does not need to be individually quantified.

But that clearly is NOT the case if you have ever watched MMA. Referees are all different and not everyone stops the fight in the same time and manner. Now if you can't or just don't want to program referees as distinct characters that is one thing but suggesting it does not occur in real life is incorrect.

Now flame away on me in your wonderfully defensive style that has become your trademark whenever someone makes a suggestion or disagrees with you. And no need to PM, I will take my punishment in public this time.

I would say different referee's may allow things to go on longer in some situations, but that's more so in boxing. Steve Smoger loves to watch guys lose braincells.

In MMA, stoppages usually occur when someone goes down hard from a stand up blow, or on the ground eating clean punches.

The only time that you ever see a stoppage that may be considered 'late' is if the person absorbing the strikes is trying to cover up, but not doing anything else. Then it's a question of how much time they should get to try and escape.

Agreed, in MMA stoppages are usually early in comparisson to boxing. I remember a fight back in the 60's, i can't remember the Italian guys name, but it was a fight against Sugar Ray Robinson, that was such a pounding!!!

Smoger let Kelly Pavlik pound the living **** outta Edison Miranda. Never see anything that awful in MMA.

So do basketball games need to have refs with differing tolerances for T-ing up a yapping player? Does Baseball Mogul's play by play screen need to take into consideration a ref's "floating strikezone"? Would the play by play read "strike 3 called on a low outside pitch" instead of "strike 3 called"?

Seems like a bit of overkill to me, especially to a game where the "fight sequence" will probably be a text play by play similar to WreSpi. I might understand wanting this feature in an arcade game, but how would it even work here? What, the text play by play says "ref stops fight after 3 punches" or "ref stops fight after 10 punches" in stead of "ref stops fight after series of punches"? Just seems like symantics that have no bearing on a game that has more to do with running a promotion than the play by play of a fight...

Adam has already mentioned that the ref's will always stop the fight on time.

And let's also mention Adam said, "will do their best to stop the fight". That doesn't say they'll stop it at the correct time or otherwise. It simply says they'll do their best, which is what any referee does.

still71 and Biggz have both summed it up perfectly. At no point did I say that all referees stop the fight at the same time, I said they all use their best judgement; therefore it has no bearing on the simulation of the result or output, and so referees do not need individual characterization.

Yup there was that polite defensive beating that DocStevens was talking about :)

Go on youtube or whatever and look for the last fight in Pride with Thompson vs Frye.... the ref let Frye eat about 20 clean punches and knees and he kept bouncin against the rope not falling but he was clearly not defending...
