From Wikipedia.org
A knight is a member of the warrior class of the Middle Ages in Europe who followed a code of law called "chivalry". Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur ("The Death of Arthur"), written in 1485, was important in defining the ideal of chivalry which is essential to the modern concept of the knight as an elite warrior sworn to uphold the values of faith, loyalty, courage, and honour. During the Renaissance, the genre of chivalric romance became popular in literature, growing ever more idealistic and eventually giving rise to a new form of realism in literature popularised by Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote. This novel explored the ideals of knighthood and their incongruity with the reality of Cervantes' world. In the late medieval period, new methods of warfare began to render classical knights in armour obsolete by roughly 1560, but the titles remained in many nations.
Some orders of knighthood, such as the Knights Templar, have themselves become the object of legend; others have disappeared into obscurity. Today, a number of orders of knighthood continue to exist in several countries, such as the English Order of the Garter, the Swedish Royal Order of the Seraphim, and the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. Each of these orders has its own criteria for eligibility, but knighthood is generally granted by a head of state to selected persons to recognise some meritorious achievement.
The Octagon, the caged enclosure used for Global Association Of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA) and similar mixed martial arts bouts
Press Release
In December 1997, founder Adam Burton began creating Knights Of The Octagon. Having watched British Cage Fighting's vicious style of knee strikes and soccer kicks, Adam decided to create a place where loyalty and honour between fighters was paramount. This was because in recent months MMA had experienced an influx of new fans turned off from boxing due to the Tixson/Hollyfried scandal where Tixon bit the ear off his opponant and then attacked his crew. KOTO Bouts are based upon the combatants approach to the entire fight instead of a round by round basis. Fighters who are knocked down are given time to get back onto their feet before the bout restarts and soccer kicks are banned. KOTO's first show looks set for either January or February 1998
Knights Of The Octagon follow the Unified Rules Of Mixed Martial Arts with the following optional extra rules.
If no decision has been achieved by the end of the fight then the winner is determined based upon their actions throughout the entire entire bout.
Non-Title matches follow the format of five 3 minute rounds.
Title matches follow the format of ten 3 minute rounds.
Strikes to downed opponents are legal.
The referee will seperate fighters if inactive.
Closing guard while on the ground is legal.
Knee strikes to the head of an opponent who is on the ground is illegal.
Fighters who are knocked down are given a ten count to respond.
Elbow strikes are legal.
Stomps to a downed opponent are legal.
Foot Stomps are legal.
Soccer Kicks are illegal.
