maybe it's been covered before, but how do referees come into play? do you hire them like in TEW, or are they just an assumed part of the organization.

also, will they have any effect on the match itself based on their refereeing style, i.e. more/less likely to stand up or stop a fight?

(accidentally put this in the TEW07 board earlier)

I'm quite interested too.

Theres only Big John McCarthy who is contracted to the UFC the rest (Mazagati, Dean etc) are contracted to the NSAC.

Nope, all referees in states with a sports/athletic commission are paid by contracted to and supplied by the comission itself. The UFC, or any org for that matter, then has to pay the commission.

I believe that McCarthy has an additional consultancy role with Zuffa though, which he is paid for.

I'm also interested to see how this plays out in the game, if at all. Will certain ref's stop fights earlier than others? Will poor quality refs not notice illigal blows? Will they allow fights to go on to long which may injure the fighter involved?

I don't know the answer to the first question, but to the second see:

Some refs should be **** like the dreaded guy in UFC, and others should be good like Big John.

I personally think Herb Dean is just as good if not better than Big John. Big Johns calls arent questioned because of who he is.

Yeah, Herb Dean is great and fairly consistent. Big John plays favorites sometimes. No ones perfect though and unfortunately for Herb he finds himself the center of controversy.

And it really is unfortunate because he's just trying to keep the fighters safe. And he does have first hand experience as a fighter, he's not the greatest obviously but I think he's 2-2 as a pro.

Dean's 2-3, he lost a match to Dave Legeno at Cage Rage: Hard as Hell a couple of months ago. Dean is one of, it not the best, ref in the US. He's also the unluckiest ref I've ever seen. He keeps getting put in tough positions like with Tim/Mir or Ortiz/Shamrock II.

Tim/Mir was one of my favorite Herb Dean moments. When he yells, "oh ****" after looking at Tim's arm cracks me up every time.

And I agree. Herb Dean is one of the best refs out there. Cecil Peoples? The worst. But he's an even worse judge.
