Feels like there's been enough time to let the New Year sink in, it's time to get on with the mafia playing. This is a warring families style game based on my own created theme that I've been working on for a very long time now. We all know I've got an evil brain when it comes to thinking things out, so it goes without saying that I've looked through previous similarly themed games and addressed every issue I could find with them in preparation for this game. In short... it's gonna be awesome. :D

I have set a maximum of 40 players for this game though I don't really expect to fill them all. Sign ups begin now with the game starting either once all the spots fill up or after a week of sign-ups being open (about mid-day on January 12th GMT). Once sign ups are complete I'll be alphabetising the player list, just to make it easy for everyone to see who is playing. Your mods for this game are Derek B and ShadowedFlames, the team that brought you Pokemon mafia. :)

I can't tell you all how excited I am to finally be bringing this game to the fore. Hopefully you'll love playing it as much as I've enjoyed putting it together. :D

Prologue

Two great neighbours, two great kingdoms were locked in war for just days short of a dozen years. The great war decimated the populations of both sides, destroying ancient bloodlines, ruining the legacies and histories of noble houses, themselves created as rewards for acts of heroism in older wars.

Violence begets violence begets violence, until only one side remains. The lords of the lands killed, their small kingdoms absorbed into larger kingdoms until only the two great kingdoms remained. Great armies facing off on battlefields across their realms, their borders advancing and retreating as lands were won and lost in the marshalled chaos of battle, lines redrawn in blood, and blood avenged until there was no more blood left to spill.

Untold numbers of men, women and even children died on both sides until one side was victorious, and to the victor goes the spoils. New lands, new titles, a new era of peace and prosperity soon to dawn upon the war ravaged kingdom. By the King’s decree a great feast has been organised, the first of many scheduled as the King prepares to bring the kingdom back into peacetime, reorganising resources, courting nobles and looking to rebuild his war-torn nation, all while bringing his new subjects to heel by word or sword, as necessary…

The City

For the first time in years there is a palpable air of celebration in the city, with many of the local soldiers returning to the capital city for the first time in years. Not since the Battle At The Palace Gate has morale been so high, with the capital’s citizens flooding out to the streets to welcome friends, family and loved ones home. The great feast itself has also proven lucrative for the city’s many tradesmen, with seemingly everyone being commissioned to work for the palace or a noble house in order to help the celebrations the greatest, most spectacular and memorable event in the history of the kingdom… nay, the world itself!

Outside The Palace

Festivities have been in full swing for days, with barely an empty bed in the city as everyone works hard for the feast and celebrates in style. Those with some time to spare, their roles already complete or with no skills to ply during daylight hours, have gathered outside the palace gates hoping to catch a glimpse of the various war heroes, nobles and even the more famous or notorious skilled craftsmen attending the event. Even the palace guards get a raucous cheer every time they check credentials or are forced to intervene when some of the cities less stable citizens attempt to gain entry. After a while the first of the noble houses begins to march their way towards the gates from their manor within the city, their leaders prominent among a number of their war heroes, with heralds listing their wartime achievements for all to hear. Slowly but surely the make their way to the gates, where they meet with the palace guard for a brief ceremony.

“Halt! Who goes there?!”

“We are House Arablis, lairds of the lowlands around this city, master horsemen and world class archers. I am Manuel Arablis, leader of House Arablis, here on the King’s request to attend the great feast so that we might celebrate our part in the glorious victory over our vanquished foes. I personally vouch for all of these men and women with me, each of whom has proven themselves to me as I have to our King, if any ill shall befall anyone due to the actions of myself or my house, then on my head shall it be.”

Manuel Arablis hands his documentation to the Palace Guard who inspects if briefly while the crowds gathered kick up a lot of noise at the various members of House Arablis present. After a short while the Palace Guard voices his verdict of House Arablis’ credentials.

“The Palace Guards recognise Manuel Arablis, leader of House Arablis, and all those for whom he vouches. At this time you shall surrender your sword to the Palace Guard so that peace may prevail within these walls, and spread throughout the Kingdom.”

“On behalf of House Arablis, on behalf of peace and on behalf of my King, I surrender my sword.”

The palace guard ritualistically receive Manuel Arablis’s sword, setting it in an ornate sword-rack set around the entrance to the palace, each space inscribed with the names of the owners of each sword that will be deposited on this glorious day. Somewhere in the city, a craftsman has been working very hard to get this piece ready for this day. The guard returns to Manuel Arablis.

“Enter, and may peace be with you. Long live the King!”

“Long live the King!”

And with that House Arablis slowly files into the palace, as the gathered onlookers hoot and holler, commenting on everything from their choice of apparel to their feats of heroism in war. As the final members of House Arablis make their way through the gates a couple of men burst from the crowds and start to yell loudly at anyone who will listen.

“Down with the aristocracy!”

“Power for the people! One man, one vote!"

“Everyone deserves a say in how the kingdom is run, not just the posh nobs!”

“Democracy is the wave of the future, where everyone can get a fair chance to not only be rich, but to lead the kingdom!”

“Leadership should be earned, not given through a birthright!”

Before the men can say anything else they have to quickly run away from the oncoming Palace Guards and back into the crowds, providing everyone with some great entertainment as the chase ensues. Eventually the guards return empty handed, deciding to leave the men to escape rather than stray too far from the major event only just getting underway.

Over the next two hours ceremonial entrances are performed for each of the houses, with heralds signalling their arrival as carefully orchestrated parades make their way from the major manors and guilds. As always, there is more than a fair share of minor incidents as some rowdy citizens allow emotional highs to get the better of them.

“We are House Rockhewr, lords of the mountains, finest craftsmen and feared warriors on the field of battle. I am Olaf Rockhewr, leader of House Rockhewr here on the King’s request to attend the great feast so that we might celebrate our part in the glorious victory over our vanquished foes. I personally vouch for all of these men and women with me, each of whom has proven themselves to me as I have to our King, if any ill shall befall anyone due to the actions of myself or my house, then on my head shall it be.”

“We are House Steward, executors of the great capital city, founders of the university and masters of international diplomacy. I am Sara Steward, leader of House Steward, here on the King’s request to attend the great feast so that we might celebrate our part in the glorious victory over our vanquished foes. I personally vouch for all of these men and women with me, each of whom has proven themselves to me as I have to our King, if any ill shall befall anyone due to the actions of myself or my house, then on my head shall it be.”

“We are House Stormbringer, tamers of the sea, world traveller merchants and the finest navy under the command of the King. I am Ranier Stormbringer , leader of House Stormbringer, here on the King’s request to attend the great feast so that we might celebrate our part in the glorious victory over our vanquished foes. I personally vouch for all of these men and women with me, each of whom has proven themselves to me as I have to our King, if any ill shall befall anyone due to the actions of myself or my house, then on my head shall it be.”

….

The Grandest Banquet Hall

Inside the King has been greeting his guests for hours, putting names to many of the new faces who have risen to prominence within their houses as higher ranking men and women have paid the highest price of war. And yet for every sorrowful moment among the new young stars there is a joyful moment with an old friend, a chance to quickly exchange a story before moving on to the next. Many people are in the palace for their first visit and are taking in some of the sights, while other sit in quiet corners trying to organise new business deals with old friends and the many influential people of the city who have made it in attendance today. This may be a great feast, but every day is a business day in the capital city, even within the palace walls. With all the guests greeted and eventually seated by the pre-arranged time, The King takes his place at the head of the table and looks out over his gathered subjects, a hush spreading throughout the great room so that even those furthest away can hear the King speak his toast.

“Before we all sit down to enjoy our victory feast, we should take a moment to remember those who are no longer with us. Thousands of men, women and even children died over the course of the war, giving their lives so that we could one day triumph over our neighbours and bring an everlasting peace to our realm. After almost twelve years, we finally defeated our enemies but not without cost. Those years were painful for me, losing so many loyal subjects, so many people I had become acquainted with over the years. My wife. My sons. Even my brothers, they all died for me and for the kingdom, leaving only myself and my one brother.”

“This war has seen me grow old, but hopefully it has seen me grow wise too. There will be no more wars in my lifetime. No more thrones to contest, no more borders to redraw, no more blood spilled in my name. This is a time of peace and a kingdom of peace loving people. Of this, I give my word. Not just as a King, but as a man. No more blood. No more blood.”

….

“But enough talk. This isn’t a negotiation table, this is a feasting table! And I can see it in your eyes that you hunger! I’ve got many more speeches to make, but those can speak. Let the feasting begin, and let’s all drink and be merry til long into the night!!”

On that high note the assembled subjects let out a roaring chorus of cheers as the first foods are brought out for the feast, with dozens if not hundreds of servers carrying trays of all kinds of food. Music plays from around the room while all manner of entertainers add mirth and merriment to proceedings. The only person who doesn’t seem to be enjoying himself is the King’s brother, sitting to the King’s right hand, guarding the King with the only sword allowed in the palace in this time of peace.

The more the merrier really. :)

I'm still waiting for a horrible moment of realisation to happen where I suddenly realise everything is a terrible idea and that it's all gonna go wrong. But with ShadowedFlames on board and having said nothing about horribly game breaking stuff, I'm mostly confident nothing bad will happen. Mostly. About 87%, give or take.

Besides, looks like sign-ups are gonna go a few more days, then there's Day Phase 1... I'm sure you can handle the workload, especially as stats say you are going to die in at least one of those games by time we get to Night Phase 1.

....

In an completely unrelated note, still looking for a few more people to sign up if possible. If I move the reserves (Paws :p) into the main list I've got enough people, but only just. This is definitely a game that does better with more people to start with, even fi you can't give 100% from the off. :)

Oh, on the 23th of January you're all invited over for drinks and a piece of cake for Han's third birthday!

Good to have you on board! And good choice on offering cake, everyone likes that. :)

So the question now is who are Mystery Person #1 & #2? I thought it could have been Arrows but since he signed up, well it is not him.

Free cake cool!:D

Man, this theme is so tempting. Not sure I'm in the Mafia mood right at the moment though. Might hold out for the next small game instead.

Yup that someone was me, I always see Glot around at the bottom of the screen so I was wondering when he would be back. Glad to have you back, no I have to get ready for when you flip out on me.:D

Come on Cappy, one spot left you know you want to join. Now I sound like Vince from the Sham Wow commercials.:D

Good to know I was missed. I missed everyone.

I hope you all like words... there's gonna be a fair few of them to read in the full opening write up. :)

I like swords better.

Fortunately, this game promises both.

Hmmm, I remember hearing a good bit about this game. Seems like a good game to make my return in, and I always was interested in playing a Warring Families game... why not, I'll fill up the last spot! Just six days removed from the anniversary of my mafia debut, too...

Glad the game filled up.

Kept getting tempted to jump in, but won't really have any sort of good time to devote for the next 2 weeks.

So... toss me in the reserves please :)

Let me guess.. the game lasted twelve days and then no-one won because Christmas passed.

Or maybe they just didn't have enough birds to fill the whole twelve days.

I'm really looking forward to receiving my role PM for this game, and think it should be a great game.

Saying this now. I wont be very active to start with.

I know i will still be called scummy, but then I can point to here and say, "I told you I wouldn't be active"

But maybe I'm just boxing clever, I could pull a scum role and then point back to this post. I may have loads of time and just being an evil genius. Its probably not that though. Probably...

Sign ups are now closed!

There is an issue with Mystery Person #2 so Rabbitman is being bumped up to the game list, which should make him happy.

Game thread is going up momentarily, I encourage everyone to read the rules and the write ups and DON'T POST until I say you can. Role PMs will follow shortly and once they are all sent out the game will start.

Let's make this a good, clean fight. Hopefully this will be the most fun you've ever had in a mafia game... with or without clothes. :p

Actually it was due to 2 players pretty much hijacking the game.

It had become pretty much just pages of the two of them bickering and the runner ended the game early.

Both were town so I guess if the runner had modkilled them, it would have unbalanced the game

Friendly note to all players and Derek: I will be out of commission for the next five to eight hours or so, as I will be ending a 24.5 hour shift in the next 45 minutes and thus require sleep. Vote counts (and an updated sheet, Derek) will be taken care of after I've had some rest.
