View Full Version : Setting demographics as a feature...

I think that this would be really cool. Like for instance in the 70's traditional wrestling and fantasy/comedy gimmicks were the norm in the industry. And you could never have a really risque program like Carmen Electras nude league or ECW because it was just too intense at the time. The demographics just weren't there. However, in this day and age the fantasy gimmicks and whatnot are out and blood/sex/extreme violence are far more acceptable today.
This would really help with historical mods so I thought it was a good idea. Much like PPV places now have a debut date demographics of the population could be set to skew leftward/more liberally over time, or perhaps even to the right if the player chooses? ^_^

i really don't see a need for this because if u wanted to make a hardcore adult promotion u can just adjust the settings at anytime and also if u don't then theres no need for it. also whats the cons and pros for this?

i think the inclusing of demographics would be very interesting. Although we do have the region thing (tri states draws more hardcore than say Ontario) its not like you can target adults or kids. might be interesting esp for the new owner goals. something like "get more child viewers" would result in more crazy gimmics and less altra-voilent matches.

^^^ My point is that a hardcore adult promotion wouldn't work in the 1950's. The demographics weren't there to support it because of attitudes at the time. Yet in the game this kind of thing could come around and do as well as it would do nowadays even if the game takes place in 1950.
A demographics feature would remedy this. ^_^

My only thoughts on this is....
In the 50's for example, what was considered hardcore (and there were bleeder's back then), isn't the same as today's. You just wouldnt' DO it the same way. A girl coming out in the "BUFF" or with just "Bodypaint" today, would be pretty much the same as them coming out in a Bikini back then (50's), or a one-piece bathing suit back in the 20's. This could potentially be set-up in the editor by placing notes to it.
For Example "No Disqualifications" or "FIrst Blood" or whatever type of match your going to use, you could change the name of (for your time period), as something else that would be considered about the same thing for back then.
However... Really, the Blood has been around for a VERY Long time. If you look at allot of the wrestler's... Poeple like the Shiek, Jimmy Snuka, etc... they have the battle scars of "Blading". Ever since wrestling began being fake (turn of the century, or around 1890), these people started doing crazy things like this.
The "Nudity" is the only thing I can really see being a (Big) issue back then.

You just do this already by editing your locations (for the whole world if necessary) - change the amount of hardcore fans to none, lower modern and entertainment to low/none - and there you go - fans that just want traditional mat wrestling, and will hate the "ECW" style. If you want to introduce locations that DO like hardcore etc, as your game goes along - then just import new locations with different fanbases. :)
Edit: Besides which - how many players of TEW have ever played (not simmed) a game that goes for 20 / 30 years? Very very few I imagine - so massive changes are unlikely to suddenly come in.

More busywork to offset the removal of other busywork?
Rob hit the nail on the head, as did chris. You're asking for the game to simulate something specific and that's not what this game is designed for. Besides, have you seen wrestling during the carnie period? Your example falls apart to anyone who has. You think cauliflower ear is a vegetable? And how much more hardcore can you get than bare knuckles fighting (the predecessor to today's watered down 'boxing')? Our current day definition of hardcore exists because things always have to get bigger and badder and more intense. So while blood happened on occasion 70 years ago, today it's used for shock value (and it still works!).

Exactly my point ;)
The furthest I've ever got was about 6 years, and the furthest diaries I've ever seen are Scapino's MWA (but that cheated cos he started it in 2010 :p ) and Dragonmack's NYCW, both of which (I think) are in 2014 - so 7 years in.

There's at least one historical account of a wrestling match I've seen where one guy ends up with his nose bitten off and blinded in both eyes (more gruesome - but this is a family board ;) ) in a legit wrestling match - and only then does he give up.
Gorehounds have always existed, and they'll always have been available for promotions seeking them out.
Strangely, I think bad language would have been a lot less acceptable a hundred years ago - but bloodshed wasn't too big a problem.
And you can always look it as the game having an in-built sliding scale - that is, a Hardcore match in the 50s is less Hardcore than a match of the same name today ;)

But still probably more prestigious. And are you forgetting The Shiek and Abdullah the Butcher? I'm pretty sure that wasn't the 50's, but some of the things they did were pretty damn hardcore. Pencils, forks, razors, you name it. Now all people do is wave steel chairs and baseball bats (occasionally covered in barbed wire).
