2010 GDS Scummie Awards -- NOMINATIONS THREAD

First off, I must profusely apologize to the community for letting this slip as far into 2011 as I have. I had genuinely intended to be well into voting by this point but between being involved in a couple of very good games and dealing with more than a few distractions off-line that have been sapping my energy I've really dropped the ball here. :(

Regardless, the show must go on, and and we are going to kick this party off in style.

2010 was a year of ups and downs, but fortunately mostly ups; new games, new players, and some great times shared together. In celebration of all those wasted hours the AMPGDSMF (Academy of Mafia Practitioners in the Grey Dog Software Mafia Forum) is now accepting nominations for the FOURTH annual GDS Scummie Awards!

moon_lit_tears will be my partner in crime for the second year; her help was invaluable last year and I'm looking forward to working with her again. Also you should thank her for kicking me in the rear end over the past few weeks with PMs saying in essence, "get off your fat ass and get to it!".

The overall process will remain essentially unchanged for this year. I know a few months back there was some discussion regarding changing the Scummies format, however, while there were some good points made, I didn't feel like there was the kind of consensus needed to overhaul the awards in such a way that would be fair. I am open to more thorough discussions for next year and coming up with a format that is more, shall we say, "crowd sourced". For these awards, I thought it best to stick to what we have done in the past; publishing the list of categories, a set amount of time for nominations and seconds, publishing the final ballot, a period for voting, followed by the ceremony.

Nominations are now open and will be accepted over the next two weeks; nominations will close at 11:59 PM EST (GMT -5) February 7th, 2011.

For each category, you may make ONE nomination and/or ONE second to a previously nominated entry. You can do both, one or the other, or neither in any of the available categories. In the case of a large number of nominations, we will use seconds to narrow the field down to a manageable number. Target range for each category (except HOF) is 3-5 nominees. If fewer than three nominees are made for a category when nominations close, the category will be dropped from the ballot. Also note that self-nominations, both in the individual and group categories (where you are a member), will not be accepted. Feel free to use the stickied discussion thread to "campaign" both for nominations and eventually votes.

Finally the categories themselves. I have made an effort to reduce the overall number of categories. There were 26 categories last year. And while expansion seemed like a good idea in theory, in execution it felt like there was a fair bit of redundancy as well as some unexpected results (I mean really, a five way tie between all the nominees in the category?). So to this end I am consolidating the "role-claim" categories to just two: Best Overall and Funniest, as we did it originally.

The other significant change I am making is to consolidate the BIP-Mafia and BIP-Cult into BIP-Scum groups. To be honest, it makes more sense for cult to be value weighted against Mafia than it does to be evaluated against Masons, which is what we have done in the past.

So, without further adieu, the 2011 GDS Scummies category list. I will track nominees and seconds in this post during the course of the nomination period. Check for updates and let me know when I've missed stuff!

Best Overall Role Claim - This category is to recognize the most effective role claim in a single game which impacts the outcome of the game and has high dramatic/entertainment value. Whether the claim was truthful or not is immaterial, only the game and narrative impact of the claim should be considered.


Funniest Role Claim - This category is to recognize the funniest/most entertaining roleclaim in a single game, regardless of game impact.


Best Role - This category is to recognize well-crafted roles in a single mafia game. Remember the award is for the ROLE, not the PLAYER. A well crafted role played poorly should not be penalized in this category.


Panix Award (Most likely to die early) - This category is to recognize players who seem to have a short lifespan, either because they're not trusted, or because they're so well respected that no one wants them around in case they're not on the same side.


BIP - Town - This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing a town-aligned character in a single game.


BIP - Scum Groups (mafia and cult) - This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing an anti-town-aligned character in a single game.


BIP - Third Party (mason and indie) - This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing characters with individual or special alignments in a single game.


BIP - Losing Effort - This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance, regardless of alignment, in a game the individual did not win, but whose play significantly impacted the game and could have changed the result if circumstances had been slightly different.


Best Group - This category is to recognize outstanding group performance in a single game regardless of alignment. "The town" is considered a group for purposes of this category.


Best Discussion - This category is to recognize individual players whose overall quality of discussion contributes to the enjoyment of the game for all players over the course of the year.


Best Scum Catcher - This category is to recognize players who have a knack for identifying scum and successfully eliminating them from play over the course of the year.


Best Serial Killer - This category is to recognize the most effective performance by a serial killer, cannibal, and/or psychopath in a single game. Both high body count and fear struck in the hearts of players should be taken into account in this category.


The lprock Memorial Funniest Player Award - This category is to recognize the funniest/most entertaining player overall over the course of the year.


Most Prolific - This category is to recognize the player who has generated the most quality participation over the course of the year. This should not be considered a 'post-whore' award, it is for consistent, meaningful participation in the GDS mafia community over the course of the year.


Most Enjoyable Game - What was your favorite game in 2010?


Best Night Scene - This category is to recognize an outstanding writeup for a night scene in a single game. Both composition and game impact should be taken into consideration.


Best Overall Writeups - This category is to recognize the overall writing of lynches, night scenes and special events for a single game. Composition, game impact, consistency of style, and the overall storytelling of the collective game writeups should be taken into consideration.


Most Improved Player- This category is to recognize a player who has made considerable strides in his play throughout the year.


Best Moderator - This category is to recognize a moderator who has achieved distinctive excellence in scenario design, game balancing, entertaining writeups and adjudication of issues.


Most Dramatic Moment - This category recognizes outstanding dramatic moments in game due to the players' interaction, shift in game momentum and/or the invocation of abilities to create a swerve.


Rookie of the Year - This category recognizes outstanding contributions to the game by a new player. For purposes of this award, a 'rookie' is defined as a player who played and completed their FIRST GDS mafia game in calendar year 2010.


Best Botch - This category is for recognizing the most memorable moment where a particular player choice/action/statement doesn't go exactly the way it was meant to.


Most Underrated - This category is to recognize up-and-coming players who have had multiple high quality performances, yet seems not to be well known within the mafia community.


Hall of Fame Class of '10 - This category is to induct the Class of 2010 members of the GDS Mafia Hall of Fame, recognizing outstanding overall performance, community spirit, and honorable play. This category will be conducted with a weighted vote system. Vote for three (3) nominees, assigning your top choice five (5) points, your second choice three (3) points, and your third choice one (1) point. A minimum of three nominees will be inducted; additional inductees may be chosen based on overall score. (NOTE: Only nominations are needed at this time, you don't need to give 5-3-1 allocations until we get to voting.)

Indeed, OLF would count, as it says "first GDS mafia game". Sure, calling him a rookie is kind of like calling Daniel Bryan a rookie, but hey. :p

I assume you mean the whole MH situation. From what I saw, they just went with the old "more pressing scum to lynch" excuse... every day. Until they lost. I still don't understand it, to this day. If you have sure-fire scum in the game - lynch them! Why take a chance with someone else when you have a sure right in front of you? At the very least, it would've bought them a couple phases... we still probably would've won, though. They just fell apart...

Funniest Role Claim - Jman2k3 in Catfish Creek for his FI claim.

I could not find a post where he claimed it outright but it is still hands down the funniest role claims I ever saw in one of these games, especially after what he did in Host.

TBP just posted his while I was updating. But yeah as a co-mod in this game I was amazed at how well Prague played this game.

Best Group - The Scum group in Classic Mafia (Gruntmark, Comradebot, djthefunkchris and myself)

We only had a kill and our Don (Gruntmark) had a 50/50 chance of coming up Scum upon investigation. He did come up as Scum upon investigation. And we still managed to pick up a win.

Close second would be the Town in Star Wars 3.

Okay I know some may disagree with this. However, you should hear me out. Part of the reason why I enjoy playing these games is because of Destiny. His off the wall comments always make me laugh. That is what this award is for. Basically all I am saying is, I have been in games on other sites and I tend to not enjoy them as much because there are no players like Destiny in those games.

Well at first I was going to go with Gonvick or MJD but I think everyone knows how good they are. Just read Movieland and you will see what I mean. He was an indy who held the town together and got us the win.

I would also like to urge someone to nominate Tha Black Phenom and eayragt in this category as well. Both of them are very underrated players who often do not get the credit they deserve.

Panix Award (Most likely to die early) - GruntMark, as my constant scumminess has meant there's almost always one less group considering killing me!

BIP - Scum Groups (mafia and cult) - I nominate LORD FREIZA, as played by GruntMark. Did an excellent job in that game, and it was hilarious to see him screw with OLF, knowing full well there was absolutely nothing that could be done to him.


BIP - Third Party (mason and indie) - I'll second Team DC in Over 9000


BIP - Losing Effort - MJD in Futurama. He almost had us, so close, so close... It was a tremendous effort.


Best Group - Town in Movieland Massacre. Scum never stood a chance in that one (including myself, thanks to the worst. Luck. Ever.)

Best Scum Catcher - Guess I'll go with OLF here, based mostly on his impressive run in MM.


Best Serial Killer - SeanMcFly as El Chupanibre in Futurama mafia, for his near brokeness in terms of ability to rack up kills that, well, quite frankly was just super.

The lprock Memorial Funniest Player Award - lprock, duh.


Most Prolific - Destiny, for always being there... in my heart... and soul... I love you Destiny. But not in any kind of gay way.

Most Enjoyable Game - Nedokius mafia. I prefer being town, and it was the only time last year I got to run with that. Loved the rush of the constant pressure... which lead to my survival, thus my victory.


Best Night Scene - This category is to recognize an outstanding writeup for a night scene in a single game. Both composition and game impact should be taken into consideration.


Best Overall Writeups - Medical Mafia. Derek and The Two made me regret sitting that one out.

Most Improved Player- I'll second Paws here. She's a better player here than some people twice her age now, not bad at all.


Best Moderator -

Most Dramatic Moment - The mislynch of Paws in CFC. Town had one last chance to stay in the game, and out the window it went... along with Hotel Manager Jimmy Barnes's corpulent form.

Rookie of the Year - Kobe1724. No, seriously.


Best Botch - Jman's refusal in CFC to consider he may be recieving faulty results, and the town's willingness to go with it. Twas hilarious to watch unfold.


Most Underrated - SmartBomb. Guy is constantly overlooked, but I don't think I've seen a bad game out of him yet.

I don't know if it was meant to replace this system, persay. I think I did hear talks of them coming into consideration for this though, perhaps having the winners of those awards counting as nominations for the year-end awards, or something like that.

I've never been sure about the end of game awards... but I know I gave out a bunch based on my own opinions of who should earn them. If nothing else they are at least a quick reference guide to the players/roles who would be most likely to get a nod from that game since I tried to follow the existing categories at the time.

I'll do the same at the end of Words and Swords too... seems like a good way to help players remember what has happened in games that happened a long time ago. :)

My own nominations will be up once I've had a proper look through the categories and found things. Spotted some people voting for themselves a few times despite that being against the rules... best thing to do there is mention whatever it is in the discussion thread, generally ensures people remember it better. :p

I'd also like to throw BHK's name in here, as he seems to go unnoticed when he is right (quite a bit). Gonvick and Anti seem to get everyone behind them when they are on to something without much difficulty, where as BHK has problems with that (even when he's bassically completely sure).
Best Discussion - Derek_b. Always has something relevant no matter which side he's on, that seems to put minds at work.
Best Scum Catcher - Again, I would like to throw up BhK's name, if he could follow through, but Gonvick stands out to me. Another one is PP. Very determined when his mind is set. So... Gonvick, BHK, and PP. The latter two impressing me since I been back.

I didnt have any write ups this year, aside from the training game (which arent included I think). My best pro town performance this year was when I was a mason (the DC group), so i don't think I'd qualify for BIP town. From the games I read, OLF from HH2, Cbot from MM, Gonvick from Nedokious, probably lead the way.

As far as scum group, I am not saying it deserves nomination, but I'd like to see the Griffins from family guy in the discussion for best scum group. I know that game dragged on about 3 or 4 phases too long and was mainly due to the choices we made, but I at least would like to see them mentioned, even if I have to mention us. :P

Interesting awards, with some confusion about what the categories meant (see, for example, the BIP - Mason/Indy). My fault, obviously, but the fact that I decided to not read ballots until just now meant that I couldn't address this. Didn't really matter in the end, as the confusion was only around a couple of categories and the winners of these categories were pretty clear cut (with or without the odd votes).

I always thought in previous years that the HOF didn't need nominations... people just voted for whoever they wanted when the voting came around.

There are a lot of votes dropping on people in categories that are meant to be game specfic where people aren't actually listing a game. This can't be easy to mod, so thanks to Banger and MLT for volunteering again to run this bit of fun. :)

Best Night Scene - Catfish Creek Night 1 (MLT vs. DWW was epic, admit it)


I ain't gonna lie... I've been waiting for someone to nom this one. It was my personal favorite write-up from CFC (followed shortly by the Aussie mercenary, Nick Lambert, killing BHK's preacher and the "lynching" of S.L. Enderman), so I was really hoping someone would nom it (since, obviously, I can't, and I'm not gonna start begging folks to do it!)

There were three "legitimate badasses" in the game, (not the Casino & Hotel Manager, who was more of a fatass than a badass!) so it was fun to have two of them come into conflict. Honestly, I was worried they wouldn't, cause I knew how awesome it'd be if they did. Not sure I was happy with how early it went down, N1 and all, but still... was one of my favorite write-ups to put together, and I think it helped set the tone for the rest of the game.

Also, I think it helps show why at least the occasional amount of epic deaths are far better than non-stop "guy walks around the corner and is immediately shot once and dies immediately!" style deaths. No offense to James Casey, and his awesome diary writing skills, but his death scenes left a LOT to be desired in Transformers a while back. I was Grimlock. Grimlock shouldn't die from a single sniper shot. Maybe Bumblebee or that little rhyming transformer, but not Grimlock.

Catfish Creek, through frustrating at times, was by far my favourite game of the year.

They knew it was going to be a long night; the history of the compound and the recent murders had everyone on edge, expecting the worst. Yet still, this was a resourceful group and many would take getting past this crisis into their own hands.

She sat alone in the conference room, her eyes fixated on the small axe in her hand. She ran her hands on the dried blood of the weapon, crying to herself, when suddenly she heard the soft giggle behind her.

She turned and gasped at the sight before her. Her little girl, standing there her hair down, framing her face. But something was off. The girls clothes were tattered and blood stained. Her skin pasty white, cracking and peeling off. The girls eyes sat like sunken pits, dried blood trailing from the corners of her eyes and down her cheeks.

“Look what they’ve done to me Mommy” the figure whispered.

“My baby……Who?.....Who could have done this to you?”

“All of them,” the girl wickedly stated. “They are all bad, mommy. They tried to take me from you. They need to be punished. Please mommy, please punish them for me.”

The woman stood, axe in hand, gazing at the girl.

“Oh sweetheart, I’m so sorry, for what they’ve done. They won’t get away with this, I promise.”

The woman calmly left the room, her eyes afire with revenge on her mind. She knew just where to start too.

The man walked down the hallway a purpose in mind. His focus on his one goal, he never felt the small creature inching its way up his back until it was much too late. Feeling something on the back of his neck the man attempted to brush it off.

But whatever it was it clearly had a firm grip of his skin as the creature brushed off the half hearted attempt and made it’s way to the mans ear canal. The man in a panic now, grabbed at the creature pinching its body with his thumb and forefinger. He pulled at the little being and yet still it maintained its grip. Slippery as the creature was the mans grasp soon slipped away and in an instant the creature was lost inside the mans ear.

Immediately his ears rang out in pain, he could feel the creature inside his head moving about. In a panic the man ran to the nearest refresher, sticking his head under the closest sink attempting to flush the thing out with water. But it was no use, whatever it was; it was with him to stay.

Not knowing what to do the man returned to his quarters, unable to think or even rationalize what had just happened he sank to the floor. What would happen to him, he thought……

He had been waiting so long, hiding in shadows, watching; hoping that he could come out and play. With the recent events it was now time.

He mumbled to himself as he searched for his target.

“Time to play………so much fun……..what shall we do first.”

So many thoughts filled his head as he searched out for the nights play date. And then suddenly he stopped in his tracks struck by a horrible thought.

“But what if they don’t want to play?

……………..

No matter, we’ll make them, just like we made the others” he answered to himself with a devilish grin.

And off again he went, searching for the night’s perfect playmate.

The woman walked up and down the halls, scraping the axe along the metal walls causing a high pitch ring to echo throughout the corridors. She paused for a second, focused on something when she heard a noise. Like a footstep upon the metal floor. She searched the halls nearby, flinging debree about.

But still she could not find what or who she was looking for. And then, she heard the noise again, behind her somewhere. She turned and searched again, but to no avail. Frustrated she slammed the axe into a nearby wall console. Tonight would be a waste but there was still time to punish those that needed it.

She woke up, her head pounding. What had happened last night, what did she do. She had found herself lying on the cold floor in a crumpled heap.

Her head…did she hit it or something, the ringing and pounding in her head was almost unbearable. She tried to stand, but found herself disoriented. The walls spinning she soon lost her balance and fell back down to the floor.

She had never experienced anything like this. Feeling like her head were about to burst she reached up and grabbed her ears, hoping to stop the intense ringing in them. When she pulled her hand back down, she found it covered in blood. She reached up and felt again, the entire right side of her head was covered. Starting at her ear, the blood was everywhere.

She sat, almost crying, with no answers. Just what had happened last night….
