Coming soon to www.bobinc.net :)

I had a big happy read me file written but don't seem to have brought it with me or included the right one in the zip file either. Given my lack of net access right now (meaning plenty of time to make things like this) I'm not going to worry too much about it and just quickly sum things up. So...

The zip comes with the datafiles and all the updated pictures and logos for the workers and promotions in the game. Add all the workers from the "Workers 1997" folder to the "Default" workers picture folder, the mod uses all the default pictures so you should just be adding to the list. My logos folder has all the default logos in it, so you can simply replace the default folder if you want... or click No many times when asked if you want to overwrite any existing files. :)

The data itself comes with a total of 1754 (I think) workers of which 823 are active from the start and only 3 workers don't have pictures at this time. There are also a total of of 86 promotions in the game of which 21 are active at the start, most of these promotions have logos but sadly they are all in 100*100 format so have to be stretched to 150*150, making most of them look rubbish now. *sigh*

Lots of stuff has been rejigged for this update, including an alter-ego's file with over 400 alter egos, a dojo graduates file with over 400 dojo graduates and a whole lot of fun stuff for you to find on the way. Long term tests show that the data is significantly more difficult than the default 2008 Cornellverse as I'm pretty mean with stats.

The big news in the wrestling industry is still the recent debuts of HGC in the USA and PGHW in Japan. HGC have signed a main event scene of former SWF World champions and megastars, but outside of this handful of famous people most of their roster are unknown. Starting at cult, they have two years to reach National before their main eventers start leaving... assuming Strong and Chord don't retire first.

PGHW on the other hand are packed with young talent. With Mushashibo, Kunomasu, Hoshino, Miwa, Tatsuko et al challenging the established stars like Nakane, Kitoaji and Ichihara, PGHW have truly taken heavyweight wrestling by storm in Japan and are hoping to build on their own cult status to take on the juggernaut of BHOTWG. Burning Hammer's heavyweight division is aging but Kikkawa has emerged as a new figurehead for the promotion and is enjoying his first reign as Burning World Champion. What BHOTWG has in it's favour though is the sheer excitement of the Junior division as they have an all star line up at this time. Oniji Taka****a, The Great Hisato, Dark Angel, Black Cobra (Duane Stone), Elemental I and II, Optimus and The Awesome Kioyaru are just some of the names challenging for Naoya Ashikaga's belt and this is the year of the inaugural Best Of Super Junior Tournament.

The #1 promotion in the world is still the SWF, headed up by the talents of Sean McFly, Nemesis, Sam Keith, Christian Faith and Bruce the Giant among others. Faith is arguably the most over guy in America at this time and the SWF has a deep roster of talents at their disposal, not to mention their pick of the world's stars. Their dominance hasn't yet come into question, but all that depends on how HGC do.

The rest of the US are busy battling each other for supremacy. On the East Caost we have 4 promotions (RPW, DAVE, PPPW and XFW) each with their own style wanting to put each other out of business and capture their share of the market. One of these promotions seem likely to emerge as the next big promotion in the US but only if they don't all destroy each other first... and assuming that NYCW's old school feel or CZCW's exciting modern style don't steal the show.

Canada is a family affair as always as the DeColts of CGC and the Stones of NOTBPW continue to expand through Canada. The DeColts main opponents at this time are Eric Tyler's School of Tradition, but with Barry Bowen still a destructive force none of the 3 DeColt boys can rest easy. Meanwhile in NOTBPW the Stones face competition of many styles, with RK Hayes, Dark Angel and Craig Prince facing off against the masterful family. In addition to this, Victoria Stone has helped establish a women's division in the promotion and the first ever NOTBPW Women's champion will be crowned in the near future...

Mexico is in a time of rebuilding as many of their top luchadors are retiring or are past their prime. Joining Mr Lucha and Luis Montero among lucha libre's elite are men like Pablo Rodriguez, El Critico, El Demonio and Axxis to name but a few. With OLLIE and MPWF still trying to be the dominant force in the country it may come down to who can invest in the better young talents first, as a new generation of wrestlers arrive on the scene.

MOSC are the only real promotion in the UK as 1997 rolls in, but the UK scene is far from inactive. With a lot of unemployed wrestlers in the country the UK is ripe for a new promotion, and much the same thing can be said for Europe who have yet to have a full time promotion debut in the area.

And lastly, Australia... often forgotten but they produced SWF talents like Bruce the Giant and The Outbackers. The country may be largely empty but there are a number of ring warriors ready to compete regularly, hopefully in front of crowds of more than a dozen people.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Lastly, I just want to quickly thanks a few people. Adam Ryland for making such a great game, I bet you never thought your computing project would turn into your career. :) The team behind the Cornellverse 1975, without whom my data would probably have severely large chunks missing from it. Your work is awesome and I never would have been able to be as creative as you guys have been. And of course, to everyone who had such kind words for the original Cornellverse 1997 release. Thanks to you guys I decided to update the data to take advantage of all the new TEW08 features and let me say this... getting HGC to National isn't as easy as you might think, regional battles are awesome in this and just you wait until you start reaching 2004. Everyone and their dog seems to join wrestling at that time.

Thanks to everyone who downloads and plays this, I hope you have as much fun playing as I have had creating... and playing too. And as always, if you see any mistakes let me know so that I can make it even better than I hope it already is. :D

Sweet. TEW 2008 is perfect for historical mods given everyone has debut dates. I'll be sure to download it and play as soon as my exams are over and I have the game. :p

So far I've checked out the data (Gotta check up on how my boys have fared into 1997 :D ) and started a game with the XWF, just to see how everything runs. Only a few days in, but each show has looked good so far. Great work Derek_B, once I get done with certain projects I'll definitely have to go back for a full game!

I have just checked out the data and is mostly seems good but there is one thing that I have noticed. Have you adjusted the stats of the workers? It seems like the older guys in 2008 still have very poor stanima in 97. Also, those who have reached their peak by 2008, should have lower stats in 97.

Ok, simmed a year and here's what I found:
- Awesome Max Wrestling goes under in April 1997.
- 4C is set to open in November 1997, though the default data says that they debut in 1996.
- Some promotions need to have their logos re-sized and attached.

Curious question,

Maybe i'm missing something, but I'm noticing some workers do not appear on the scene yet in 97, granted 11 years is a big gap, understandable :), so wondering if this mod has the ability to create those workers as you progress through the years ?

For example, maybe I've just missed it, but it seems like Jack Bruce will debut in the wrestling scene around 98, from the bios, so I'm wondering will he appear in the game and all? (Or maybe he's in and i just haven't realized it..)

Anyhow, hope that made sense! :),

great mod, keep up the fantastic work :)

They have some of the logos there, but not all of them, at least not the one that I downloaded, unless the logos are under different names or use the generic ones included in the mod.

Some of the feds, like HGC, I have. Some, like the Australian ones and NEW I do not have, so I was wondering if maybe they weren't bundled or there is an updated version I should download.

This is really a great mod, but a very very small point of criticism (we're aiming for perfection, no?):

Everest's bio in the Default data reads:

The near-500lb Elmer Kelly is an American grappler who is better known as his BHOTWG character Everest. Debuting in the mid 1990s, Kelly struggled on the US circuit under his real name, being seen as a clumsy, unfit wreck. He headed to Japan, where he was reborn as Everest; while his skills hadn't improved a great deal, the character was a hit with Japanese fans, and he has remained with BHOTWG ever since. He is most famous for his successful "Alliance 2K" tag team with Yasunobu Masuno.

In the 97-mod:
The near-500lb Elmer "Everest" Kelly is an American grappler who debuted in the mid 1990s. Kelly struggled on the US circuit under his real name, being seen as a clumsy, unfit wreck but his sheer size and look was enough to get him signed by the SWF in late 1996. Re-packed as the man mountain Everest, he quickly rose up the card, squashing a variety of jobbers in the process.

So to be correct, Everest should still be wrestling as Elmer Kelly in SWF no?

I think the point was that according to the official Cverse history, the repackaging does not happen until he goes to Japan. So the question is how much rewriting of the Cverse history is alright as compared to being 100% accurate to what is known. Based on the 97 bio, there really isn't a reason for Elmer to head to Japan, which is something that should be occurring soon if one were to follow the default data.

Hey everyone! *ducks and hides to avoid wives*

Just dropping by quickly to say hi during my very limited internet access. I've pretty much only been online for about 2 hours over the last month so not had time to do much... like download updates for the game or read forums. But I'm making it a point to check up on my baby. :)

I doubt the data will ever be perfect, a lot of what was added between the TEW07 and 08 games was stuff that Adam added to the default data that I incorporated. All of Australia for example. But I've always got time to answer a few questions. So in no particular order...

1. 4C were originally set to debut a year later because the number of workers in the data that were available to work there was originally very small. As I've wandered further from being strictly canonical in the data I've added more people and North America has more people available. But I'm not comfortable adding even more people yet so 4C won't be added until I've expanded Canadian wrestling a little more. Probably by stealing more stuff from the 1975 mod. :)

2. Everest sounds like more of a monster heel than Elmer Kelly. I've used a lot of creative license and definitely wanted the SWF to feel more like Sport Entertainment than other promotions. I'm still not entirely happy with them though, with Jim Force being the most out of place since he doesn't officially debut until much later according to his column.

3. I somehow managed to not have AMW's logo on my own computer when I made the zip for download. But there are plenty around now and I like them all, so take your pick. For a quick history lesson, AMW's main stars are all characters from Scapino's SWF and MWA diaries, with AMW folding due to money issues. They die in April because they are meant to... unless you want to "invest" (read as: cheat) and give them some money when you take them over.

4. The Australian promotions don't have logos because they are all new. Anyone who wants to make logos for them should feel free to do so. :)

5. Flare, The Hype, "Mr Supreme" Dennis Butler, I Butcher, Aurthur Salvatore Simpson and so may more... what happens to them between 1997 and 2008? (or 2004 since none of them were around by then either :p) Many people leave the wrestling industry for many reasons. Could be injuries, could be drugs, could be police incidents, could be tragic accidents, could be they were such pains that no-one ever wanted to hire them... i guess we'll never know for sure. :)

As for the little errors, I'll have them fixed up for future releases. I'll probably release a new update in a few months with any contributions that people make for logos or workers, and I might add a few more people myself... and maybe 4C too. I might even finally get around to expanding the UK scene a little too because I just can't help feeling that the south of the UK needs a promotion of it's own.

And yes... Roman Heidensiek as a user character. I just love his name and had to steal it! :D

After two weeks of happily playing this mod, I want to give a big THANK YOU to derek_b for this piece of art. I did not like the changes 2008 brought to my favourite promotion (NOTBPW) and also felt that the data got slightly less interesting since the original TEW (2004), with all the big boys getting older and such. But this 1997 Cornellverse is just perfect for me, since I have at least 10 years to get the best out of Dan Stone Jr, Dark Angel and Jeremy Stone before age deteriorates their usability. Again, thank you very much!

Especially since I never really played the other versions besides back in the days when TEW was EWF... So to go a little futher back in time and see how these major players were built up in the Cverse univserse is pretty darn cool and all..

Hope you got your internet access back soon, so you can continuing updating your mod if neccessary :) ..

Hey again everyone, just checking in to let you know what I'm up to and what I'm planning to do in the near future. In theory I should be moving into a new flat in the next month and we will DEFINITELY be getting the net in there as soon as we possibly can. With the internet back in my life on a regular basis I'm going to do some more work on the Cornellverse 1997 data and fine tune it a bit more. There are some things that have been brought up that I agree with so I'm going to take a look at them. I'm just going to post a quick list of things I'm aiming to do so that anyone who wants to contribute anything can do so.

- Download Adam's upcoming data update and integrate any changes he's made into the database. Probably the most time consuming part for me as I need to look at almost every worker in the database and then do stats, debut dates and what not.
- Tweak existing stats for some workers. While I'm generally happy with the way the data plays out there are a lot of leftovers from TEW07 data that I had to make. With workers developing differently now and stuff like the potential stat being editable I'm going to lower the stats of some of the young wrestlers and probably raise the stats of some of the veterans.
- HELP NEEDED!: Promotion Logos. This dataset has a lot of logos that need to be resized and/or recreated. Personally, I don't mind using the old ones but I'd like the entire dataset to look great if possible so would welcome any assistance here. However, I'm not going to ask anyone to help with this until I've got regular access to the web myself and I'd hate for everyone to end up piling together and all replicating the same things over and over.
- If possible, I'm looking to add 4C into the default data rather than debuting them late. Obviously if there aren't enough workers around for it to work properly then I won't bother but I'd like to do it. I may also look into bringing in another couple of small promotions into the game world as I feel there are a few regions that deserve some expansion.
- Rewrite some biographies and correct spelling/grammatical errors. There aren't as many as there could be but I know there are still plenty out there.
- Add pictures to some of the alter egos. From my own play testing I know I've missed a few so I'm going to go through and sort those out too.

Once again, thanks to everyone who has downloaded the data and given it a try. I made this mod because I thought that it would be fun (and cos someone else suggested it to me :)) and because I thought I could do it if I tried. The fact that people other than me enjoy it is a great bonus for me and I'm glad that my weird obsession with a fictional universe of a pretend sport can be enjoyed by more than just me.

Derek, thank you for an incredible mod. I enjoy historical mods, and I had a hard time getting into the C-Verse to be honest. I highly respected it always, but never the less, this mod is what has drawn me to it. Wonderfull work! I started a new promotion in 1997, that has risen from nothing to well... I'm Small, but I was at 0 to start, so that's pretty good in my eyes anyways, lol.

No, that's accurate; CZCW used to have a women's division. From the default database, read the biographies of Carol Singer & Miss Mexico for proof.

And Joanne Rodriguez take a look at her bio I believe it says she got a lot out of a great feud with Miss Mexico in CZCW. In the 2004 default data I believe J-Ro and Miss Mexico were the only two female wrestlers signed.

Yeah, CZCW used to have a women's division but I didn't want to push an original division cause I knew someone (probably Remi :p) would want them to have a women's title and everything. It was never a major part of the promotion but they usually pick up a few women over the years, especially once they grow far enough to get a decent TV deal and begin to expand their roster. I considered making women's wrestling integrated but decided against that. When I revamp things I might give CZCW a few women to start with just so that they have something to work with. Might encourage them to sign more in the long run.

That'll teach me to never care about women's wrestling in general. *hides to avoid Remi's wrath*

Lol, can it be NOTBPW is too small to keep with the network Canada-on-Air? Normally I don't suck in the game but after only 3 weeks my show got axed. And given the first week for me is traditionally a struggling with bad main event chemistry. Ok, a C+ and 2 B- shows sucks, but still... They shouldn't start as a 'very big' network as a cult promotion with low pop. :D

It's the indies, make it integrated.
