In April of 2008, Japanese fighting legend Akira Maeda held a press conference to announce that he was reforming the UWF. Although in the past, the UWF was a shoot-style professional wrestling organization, Maeda said that the outcomes of the new UWF would not be predetermined. The new UWF would be real shoot wrestling.
The first event will take place on June 21st from the Yoyogi National Stadium Gymnasium #2.
Background:
Shoot wrestling is a combat sport and a general term that describes a range of hybrid fighting systems originating in Japan in the late 1970s, in close association with Japanese professional wrestling. Shoot wrestling has several sub-disciplines eg. Shootfighting, Shooto, Pancrase, RINGS submission fighting and Shoot boxing.
The term "shoot" refers to the real application of techniques, as opposed to a "work". The shoot wrestling techniques are often applied in shoot-style professional wrestling matches, which feature predetermined outcomes, but with much technique applied in a stiff or full contact manner.
The Rules:
A fight is won by knockout, submission, doctor/referee order stop or judges decision. Some offensive tactics are prohibited: you cannot headbutt, punch to the head with a closed fist (to the body, however, is ok), scratch, bite, eye gouge or attack the groin. Pretty much everything else is allowed. You can slap or use the heel of the hand to the head. Time limits are set to between 30 and 50 minutes. When a fighter has both hands and knees on the ground, an opponent may attack to anywhere but the head. If even one hand is raised, the head may be attacked.
When a submission hold is applied, the referee pays close attention as it is very dangerous. It is easy to break bones, snap tendons and joints with such tactics. The referee will break the action if an opponent submits and will award the fight to the winner.
**(Rules updated Nov.08) Each match is judged based on a point system. The point system works as follows: Opponents start with zero points and are awarded points throughout the match for things such as takedowns, mounts, knock down, submission attempts and general match domination. If a match ends without a KO, TKO or submission then the victory will be awarded to the fighter with the most points.
Standard Match:
30 minute time limit
judges decision based on points after time expires (introduced in Nov.08)
Title Match:
50 minute time limit
judges decision based on points after time expires
Tournament Match:
30 minute time limit
judges decision after time expires

Inoue will be heavily out weighted for this fight, as the UWF does not have weight classes. But Inoue is one of the best Welterweights in Japan, and some say Suzuki is well past his MMA prime. This could be a very exciting UWF matchup and the Japanese fans are really looking forward to this fight.
Naoya Ogawa vs. Josh Barnett is one of the BEST OF THE WORLD 2008 semi final matches. Barnett's journey to the semi's has seen him beat Bob Sapp in the opening round, and then guillotine choke Makoto Takimoto in the quarter finals. Barnett is 3-0-1 in the reborn UWF and is a favorite for to win the tournament. Naoya Ogawa beat Masakatsu Funaki in the opening round and then defeated Riki Fukuda, both wins by decision. Ogawa is also 3-0-1 in the new UWF and looks to have made the adjustment to the UWF style. Both men are very popular in Japan so the crowd should be really into this fight.
Bob Sapp vs. Ryuta Noji is the other BEST OF THE WORLD 2008 semi final. Bob Sapp actually lost is opening round match via decision to Josh Barnett. But due to injuries in the opening round Sapp was picked as a replacement fighter (due to a good showing against Barnett). In the quarter finals Sapp rose to the occasion and defeated Gary Goodridge. Ryuta Noji has been a bit of a surprise, he beat Yasuaki Miura in the opening round and then Kevin Randleman in the quarter finals (both via submission). Ryuta had a very good showing in the very first newborn UWF event back in June against Josh Barnett, when the match went to a 30 minute draw. Could Ryuta and Barnett be destined for a rematch in the finals?
Aleksander Emelianenko vs. Don Frye could turn out to be a really exciting match. Emelianenko has only 3 professional MMA losses, he is also a two time Russian SAMBO and two time world SAMBO champion. This will be Aleksander Emelianenko's debut in the UWF. With his SAMBO background he should be able to make a good transition to the UWF style. The veteran Don Frye will be his opponent. Frye is a legend in Japan, and has fought in pretty much all the major MMA promotions around the world. Frye is 1-1 in the new UWF beating Dan Severn back in July via TKO. He fought in Kazuyuki Fujita in the main event of the debut event in June were he lost a close match after battling Fujita for over 22 minutes.
Masakatsu Funaki vs. Tomohiko Yoshida is a classic veteran vs. rookie fight. Funaki was one of the top four mixed martial artists in the world from 1993 to 1998 (being the top-rated mixed martial artist in 1996) and is currently rated as the second most successful Japanese fighter of all-time. Funaki has had a string of tough defeats since coming to the reborn UWF loosing his debut match against Naoya Ogawa in the opening round of the BEST OF THE WORLD 2008 tournament and then to Yasuaki Miura back in September. Tomohiko Yoshida will make his UWF debut. He fights out of Kiyoshi Tamura U-File camp and he's got a pro MMA record of 5-1-1. A win over Funaki would be huge for the 24 year old Yoshida, can he pull off the upset?
Riki Fukuda vs. Jimmy Ambriz should be an interesting fight. Riki Fukuda is 2-1 in the reborn UWF. He won his opening round fight in the BEST OF THE WORLD 2008 tournament over ZULU but then lost his quarter final match against Naoya Ogawa. Fukuda also has puroresu experience and has seemed to make the adjustments well to the UWF style. Jimmy Ambriz is another fighter with pro wrestling experience in Japan. Ambriz is 1-0-1 in the reborn UWF, with a win against Jan Nortje and then drawing Makoto Takimoto.
Mark Kerr vs. Kevin Randleman will see two American heavyweight meet. Mark Kerr will make his UWF debut. Kerr is a veteran of PRIDE FC and has wins over Nobuhiko Takada, Dan Bobish and Enson Inoue. Kerr recently returned to pro MMA but has had disappointing results thus far. But, the UWF style might be just right for the kind of fighting style Kerr employs. Kevin Randleman is another well known name in Japan, fighting in PRIDE FC and Japanese pro-wrestling. He's 2-1 in the reborn UWF. In his debut, he beat Yoshiki Takahashi. He won his opening round fight against Paulo Silva in the BEST OF THE WORLD 2008 tournament but lost in the quarter finals to Ryuta Noji.
The UWF will introduce a new under-25 league called the U-25. This division will be exclusive for under 25 year old fighters. Yuta Nedu vs. Takashi Hasegawa and Hiroki Sato vs. Keiji Kenkyusha will complete in the first two U-25 League matches to open the show. Akira Meade stated that in the future their could be a specific U-25 Championship Title created for the division.
The final announcement Meade made was that the UWF would return to a point system, which would determine a winner in the event a match finishes without a KO, TKO or submission. The point system works as follows: Opponents start with zero points and are awarded points throughout the match for things such as takedowns, mounts and submission attempts. Meade said that too many fights were ending in draws under the old rules. The new rules would come into effect immediately (the BEST OF THE WORLD 2008 was already running under the point system).

9. Katsuya Inoue defeated Minoru Suzuki (12:27) via an americana submission (***)
The UWF's BEST OF THE WORLD 2008 tournament continued November 22nd with the tournaments Semi Final matches and the featured fight between Katsuya Inoue and Minoru Suzuki from the Tsukisamu Alphacourt Dome. It was Katsuya Inoue who had the skill advantage, but Suzuki had the size advantage: Inoue scrambled and after an extended period of struggling managed to get himself into north and south position, on top of Suzuki. Inoue hit a hard right to the chest, then turned and got a full mount. Suzuki was really struggling, and could barely get his arms up to cover up from the strikes that Inoue was raining down. A quick transition and Inoue has an arm and applied an americana. Suzuki had no choice and had too tap out.
The fist co-main event, was Josh Barnett taking on Naoyo Ogawa in the BEST OF THE WORLD 2008 Semi-Final: Ogawa tried to quickly mount Barnett t but didn't't get there in time. Barnett gets half way back up. They enagaged in a fairly ragged scramble for supremacy and Barnett slipped out and got his back! Ogawa turtled up, and took a few heavy shots to the ribs. Barnett got his legs around Ogawa and used them to roll him over. Exposed, Ogawa tried to turn so that he is on top, but Barnett had already rammed one arm around his throat and had a tight choke-hold applied. Ogawa was in big trouble, and obviously couldn't see a way out as he tapped out pretty quickly. This was the fight of the night, the crowd was into this fight from start to finish. Tons of heat in this one!
Next up was second co-main event, the other Semi-Final fight between Bob Sapp and Ryuta Noji: Noji threw some combination's but got smothered into a clinch. They backed up against the ropes. Sapp hit a wicked uppercut, taking Noji completely by surprise, then started wailing away with lefts and rights. Noji could only cover up against the ferocious attack, but that doesn't stop a couple of big shots landing. More shots rained down, and Noji was getting obliterated, he couldn't throw any counter punches as he couldn't move his hands down without getting hit again, and he couldn't get past Sapp to safety either. The referee finally sees enough and covered Noji up. Bob Sapp advances to the finals.
Russian Aleksander Emelianenko faced Don Frye. The Russian Sambo Champion against the American/Japanese wrestling legend: A huge clubbing blow from Emelianenko connected, hitting home across the left cheek. Emelianenko then got into a full mount, Frye was in enormous trouble from this position. Right hands rained down, and Frye can only cover up. One or two got through though, and there was blood coming from a cut below his left eye. Emelianenko pulled back and threw an absolute bomb, Frye brought his hands up to block but could do almost nothing against it, that had power to spare. Frye looked groggy, and that allowed Emelianenko to start throwing a barrage of rights and lefts to the face. The referee had seen enough and he didn't think Frye could defend himself, this match was over. Emelianenko by TKO!
Another Japanese MMA legend, Masakatsu Funaki was in action against Tomohiko Yoshida: Funaki had a very loose guard applied, almost daring Yoshida to pass. A right hand from Yoshida, then he passed into side control, but Funaki immediately scrambles as soon as Yoshida started moving, and they ended up struggling for position. Funaki managed to slip behind Yoshida and get his back. Yoshida tried to turn, but got flattened and Funaki sunk in a choke. It wasn't in fully yet. Yoshida tried to work free but Funaki used his legs to stretch out Yoshida's entire body, and that was enough, Yoshida had no escape and had to tap.
Riki Fukuda took on Jimmy Ambriz in a fight that saw Ambriz come in with a 130lbs weight advantage: Fukuda tried to get back to the center, but almost invited a takedown attempt, which promptly came. Ambriz drived him down with a waist-high tackle...but got caught! The takedown left his head exposed and Fukuda applied a guillotine on the way down. Ambriz is caught, that is on really tight. He tap out, Ambriz was clearly unable to breathe with a forearm crushing his wind-pipe. The crowd was very pleased to Fukuda get the victory.
The UWF's U-25 League displayed some great action in it's debut. Takashi Hasegawa defeated Yuta Nedu in a very good match which ended up going to the judges. Keiji Kenkyusha beat Hiroki Sato in the other U-25 League match which kicked off the show.
After the show UWF President Akira Maede announced that the BEST OF THE WORLD 2008 Final's between Josh Barnett and Bob Sapp would take place January 1st 2009, from the famed Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan. Maede promised a stellar card and said matches for 1/1/09 would be announced over the next week. There is also a TV Tokyo special set to take place December 12th from Tokyo Korakuen Hall, called "DYNAMISM KORAKUEN”. More information on this event will be available shortly. The prospects of Herring/Akebono are both frightening and intriguing. I'm psyched for Sapp/Barnett though. I'm a big fan of the Japanese MMA scene and puroresu, so this diary is really right up my alley. Keep up the good work!

5. Akebono defeated Heath Herring (14:10) via KO (***)
DYNAMISM KORAKUEN took place on December 12th, 2008 from a sold out Tokyo Korakuen Hall. The big surprise of the night was the main event, which saw Akebono knock-out Heath Herring! Akebono had moved up getting into the crucifix position. Herring was wide open, with little to protect his head. Akebono started raining down with hard punches, Herring was getting pounded. A vicious shot hits above the ear, and that's enough to turn the lights out, Herring was out cold. After the fight it was revealed that Herring had injured his right hand early on but decided to continue. The fans went crazy for Akebono after the win. An impressive UWF debut for the former Yokozuna.
ZULU vs. Goodridge was an early slugfest but when both big men tired the action slowed considerably. The one bright spot for Goodridge is that although Zuluzinho clearly won the fight, he didn't actually turn that dominance into any sort of real damage. After the 15 minute time limit expired the judges awarded Zuluzinho the victory.
The second big upset of the night had to be Kawahara's TKO win over Caol Uno. Kawahar hits some jabs, then a high kick. It glanced off Uno's shoulder, catching him on the top of the head. He stumbled backward, ending up against the ropes. Kawahara charged in and started unloading, and after several crunching punches had landed the referee has no choice but to jump in and bring the match to the end. Seiya Kawahara (who is also part of the U-25 League) stock just rose considerably in the UWF. The 20 year old could have a bright future in the fight game.
Takeya Mizugaki, Yusuke Endo and Takashi Hasegawa were all victorious in their U-25 League fights. All 3 fights went the distance and were fast paced and action packed. The fans really enjoyed the matches and the UWF looks to have found success with the U-25 League format. The fight between Keiji Kenkyusha and Yuta Watanabe was cancelled due to a last minute injury to Kenkyusha.
After all the fights had ended, UWF President Akira Maeda came out the ring. He thanked all the fighters for their hard work and excellent effort. Maede announced a few bookings for the January 1st 2009 show. Josh Barnett vs. Bob Sapp in the finals of the 2008 BEST OF THE WORLD tournament will headline. The winner will also be awarded the UWF World Title. American Pro Wrestling Superstar Kurt Angle will make his MMA debut taking on Japanese Pro Wrestler Yuji Nagata. Naoya Ogawa vs. Ruyta Noji will determine 3rd place in the BEST OF THE WORLD tournament. Takeya Mizugaki vs. Takashi Hasegawa will determine the new U-25 Champion. Participation from Kiyoshi Tamura, Aleksander Emelianenko and Kazuyuki Fujita is also expected. Maede said the UWF is still working on signing more big matches and that the full card would be released soon.

On New Years day, live from the legendary Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan, the UWF held the finals of the Best of the World 2008 in front of over 10,000 fans. The first 5 fights were broadcast for free on TV Tokyo with the remainder of the card broadcast on Pay-Per-View. It was a thrilling show with lots of drama, new Champions and unique match-ups.
Bob Sapp defeated Josh Barnett in the finals to win the tournament and become the 4th UWF World Title holder. Let's go to the highlights: Sapp throws a stinging jab, landing just above the left eye. Barnett steps in and fires off one of his own, but Sapp bobs out of the way and scores with a pair of solid shots to the body. Barnett turns and swings, just as Sapp also unloads...and it's Sapp who connects first! Barnett's hands drop and he is on rubbery legs. Sapp follows up with a beauty of a right hand, and that drops Barnett. The referee doesn't even wait for Sapp to dive in to finish, he's seen enough, Barnett is clearly on Dream Street. This bout is over! Sapp wins via 1st round TKO with the official time being 2:54. Hands down the fight of the night, the fans were really into the fight.
Kurt Angle defeated Yuji Nagata in the match between two popular pro-wrestlers. Angle looked pretty good in his mixed martial arts debut. Neither fighter was technically strong but there some lots of interesting moments in the fight. Early on the two stood exchanging punches which the fans loved. Angle was working for a submission and came close twice, but Nagata was able to fend off the attack. The time limit expired. Angle looked to be the stronger competitor and the judges agreed, awarding him the victory.
Roger Gracie defeated Kazuyuki Fujita by judges decision. Gracie had Fujita in the mount for most of the match but could not finish him off. A little disappointing there was not more action in this fight but the Japanese fans appreciated getting their first look at Roger Gracie.
Aleksander Emelianenko defeated James Thompson. Emelianenko dominated the entire match and won the decision easily. Thompson came out of the gate early with a flurry of action and then gassed out. He took a lot of punishment from Emelianenko but was able to go the distance.
Naoya Ogawa defeated Ruyta Noji in a close fight to finished 3rd place in the Best of the World 2008 tournament. Ogawa was close to ending the fight on several occasions but could not finish off Noji. In the end the judges awarded Ogawa the victory.
Takayama and Akebono had a ton of crowd heat, the fans were really into this fight. Here are the highlights: Akebono throws a jab that connects, albeit without much power, but it causes Takayama to back up quickly, back toward the ropes. Akebono comes in quickly, throwing looping punches, but gets reckless and Takayama grabs the opportunity by nailing a big right cross! Akebono collapses in a heap, his left leg buckling underneath him in at an awkward angle. Takayama has knocked him out cold with a killer punch. Official time of the knock out is 2:22 of the first round.
Kazuo Misaski defeated Kiyoshi Tamura. Misaki controlled the entire match, Tamura looked frustrated and was unable to mount any kind if efficient offensive attack. The judges awarded Misaki the win.
Former Russian Sambo Champion Vladimir Begeza faced off against Riki Fukuda. Let's see the highlights: Fukuda has to be careful that he doesn't get careless and end up in a triangle choke. Begeza bats away a couple of punches with his hands. Fukuda tries to pass guard, but leaves an arm in for just a fraction of a second too long, and Begeza is able to clamp his legs around it and pull. That's a tight arm bar, and Fukuda is going to have really trouble getting free. He tries to pull free, but it's no use. Fukuda taps out to the armlock. Begeza wins via armbar submission with the official time being 12:12.
Masakatsu Funaki defeated Katsuyori Shibata. Funaki's experience helped him dominate the fight. Shibata was outmatched but he was able to go the distance.
Takeya Mizugaki faced Takashi Hasegawa for the U-25 Championship. Here are the highlights: Mizugaki is looking for an armbar, but Hasegawa is defending it well. Hasegawa gets a nice elbow in, that caught Mizugaki by surprise. Mizugaki fires off several elbows to the ribs, and Hasegawa is left gasping for air. Those were hard, there's a big red patch where they hit. Mizugaki takes the left arm, Hasegawa couldn't defend it any longer. The armbar is applied, there's no way out. Mizugaki wins by tap out. The official time is 10:30. Takeya Mizugaki is now the U-25 Championship champion.
Yusuke Endo defeated Seiya Kawahara. Endo controlled the first 10 minutes and Kawahara took over the last 5. The judges award the fight to Endo.
