Voting Rules

One vote per account.
You must have at least 10 posts on the forum to vote (to prevent dummy accounts).
You needn't vote for every category, but try to vote for as many as you can.
You can't vote for yourself or a group you were a member of where you as a player/moderator/group are nominated. You can vote for events you were involved in (like Most Dramatic Moment or Best Botch).
PM ballots to both myself and theoutlaw321 (That's 'Wallbanger; theoutlaw321' in the PM's address box.)
Voting closes 12:00am EST/5am GMT Sunday, January 18th.---

Notes on the final ballot:

Outlaw and I collaborated to trim down the catagories with over six nominations. In similar fashion to last year we tried to follow some core principles: 1) making sure that as many different games were represented as possible, 2) where individuals were nominated multiple times (like a player nominated twice in a best performance category from different games) we tried to identify the stronger nomination and keep it, and 3) all other things being equal, the nominee with fewer total nominations would be given consideration in order to have as many community members contending for a Scummie as possible. (There was one category, though where we decided to leave seven on the ballot - Best Game. We just couldn't bring ourselves to take one off the list, they were all just too good.) We've tried our best to be fair, and we hope that is apparent.

Just my thoughts on many of the nominations. And please note I think almost all the nominations listed are deserving. But some I think are more deserving than others. Afterall thats what this is for, to decide a winner.

Best Role Claim

It says to consider the role which had the biggest impact or entertainment value. I will say that I found Rev's claim of Simon Dark was maybe the most perfect example of ever of making a fake claim fit the facts presented to the town. But it didn't save him, and I can't say it changed the course of the game. Of the Nominees, Shape's claim goes a long way in helping his team win. He took the role, built a story around it, and managed to fool people collectively and individually. For those reasons I think he deserves it.

Funniest Role Claim
Which one had the most entertainment value overall? Thats pretty much subjective, but I'll note that it was the Maybe Dick and Aussie as Arrows claims that got talked about the most eitehr during the games themselves or afterwards. I'd say if something is memorable, then that's a mark people were entertained by it. But of the two, Maybe Dick was a claim that was part of a plan, and the Arrows claim seemed more like a reaction to events in the game. Personally, watching an elaborately planned ruse fall apart is, to me, more entertaining. So, I;d have to go with Maybe Dick.

Best Role Award
This is recognition to Mods for making a well crafted role. Myself, I think no role in a game exists by itself. If it is really great, it blends with the game and serves an integral part of how the game turns out. In that aspect, Thanos, Sylar, and Panix strike me as roles the game or parts of the game, were built around. All three were original in their own way, and personally, the idea of an SK who steals his victims abilities is the one I like the most. I think had Rev and I made the Gems in the Marvel game up for grabs by anyone, and not just Thanos, I'd vote for Thanos. Sylar had the ability to pick and choose, Thanos was restricted in that regard. The impact of the Panix role relied somewhat on chance. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but with Syalr, the entire game was open to that role (as best I can remember). That kind of freedom deserves the award, imho.

Best Individual Town performance
Scum tried to kill him I forget how many times. He helped lead multiple lynches despite having a role I wouldn't say was all that grand. He survived because other townies recognized the fact that he was a leader. I think Nzane deserves this award.

Best Individual Mafia Performance

There are two different methods to examine. Was the best Mafia performance done behind the scenes, or was it played out in the open? Furthermore, which got the job done via gameplay, or did one have to rely heavily on the role provided? Shape would be right in pointing out that he took what was given him and made it better. And he did it all out where everyone could see. However, I can't help but think being untargetable scum in the game prior to that helped him an added bit in Lakeside, whereas by mid game in Marvel the general mood was something wasn't right about Outlaw, who mainly kept his head down and did his damage behind the scenes where people couldn't see it until it was too late. In fairness, he was helped a lot by his reputation as a talented scum hunter. People didn't want to risk lynching someone so valuable. Honestly I can't decide between these two, but I do think they are the most deserving.

Best Individual Cult Performance
A good measurement is looking to see if they won their game. Out of all the Noms, Nevermore fits that. And he did it by convincing others that he could be trusted.

Best Individual Mason/Individual Award
As mentioned above, winning counts a lot. 2 Cases here of Masons leading the town to victory, and one of an SK making it to the end. Personally, I am not a fan of deal making. I cannot award Nevermore for managing to survive when his survival entailed making a deal. I know, it was smart for him and good game play from his perspective, it just doesn't hold that much sway with me. On the otehr hand, IER and Crychon both played a major part in their sides winning. The Rebel Alliance folks did great as well, but I've already discussed how I feel that Nzane lead the town in that game. So I am looking more at IER and Crychon in their respective games. I know some may deduct points because they think Crychon's role wasn't balanced. And maybe because of that imbalance he was able to step up and lead whereas IER did have a moment where he struggled to convince people to lynch the person who turned out to be the Joker. Having played both games, I just got the sense that Crychon seized the reins early and never looked back. IER didn't really start putting his stamp on things until the midway point. Again, some may argue that's because of Crychon's role. But I'd have to give my vote to Crychon.

Best Group Performance
For this I tend to favor the Town in Hollywood Horror and the Mafia from lakeside, though both won for distinctly different reasons in vastly different games. Honestly its impossible for me to try to figure out a clear winner here. Numbers wise though, I'll note the town had less of an advantage in Hollywood Horror than Scum had in Lakeside. I know people cried sour grapes when I brought up the ratio business, but the truth is I am less impressed by a scum group winning a Dark Barebones game with what became a 1:2 Scum ratio than I am with town in Hollywood Horror kicking the crap out of all the scum they had to face in their game. Still, I'm open to being convinced otherwise.

Best Contribution to Game Discussion
This is for individual players whose overall quality of discussion contribute to the enjoyment of others over the course of the year.

Its an understated approach, but to me Gonvick contributes the most by his habit of just showing up to share information or ask questions.

Best Scum Catcher
I kind of feel somewhat like Arrows was nominated for this based on what he did in SouthPark Mafia. I don't dispute that he's a great scumcatcher. I am just trying to recall what games in 2008 were there where he either didn't sit out, Mod/Co-mod, or die very early? There was Marvel and Lakeside, but he was scum in both of those. The award is for catching scum over the course of the year, afterall. Almost the same thing with DJ, although he did have a tremendous game in Cartoon Chaos, but otehr games he was either targetted early or scum himself. I think IER, for the duration of the year, is a better fit with this.

Most Enjoyable Game
Hollywood Horror. Maybe if I had played it I'd feel differently, but this game was definately fun to follow along.

Most Improved Player
Big Josh. He went from someone people would mock to being a real force in the Gotham Game.

Most Underrated Player
Gonvick. I think some of it may be his style, he doesn't get bogged down in debates so you don't see him around as much. But what he does, he's effective at it.

Hall of Fame

Two most likely candidates, imo, are Arrows and DJ. That they've gotten killed early on in plenty of games isn't a strike against them, its an admission of the respect players have for them. The only knock on Arrows is his temper. It doesn't bother me because hell, I am often one to seek out confrontations, but I certainly understand why some people disprove of it.

I'll be honest here, Anti, from the start of R&B mafia I was looking for an alibi. My first idea was to claim Jay Ward and give myself a Beloved Princess role. D1 NickC claims that exact role, N1 he gets offed and his role is proven.

So I start Wikipedia-ing, find Maybe Dick and put it on our board. I get blocked or tracked the next day and Slim & I try to pull off the double claim gambit (I think we killed you as the protector in the process).

I get bussed for the claim, almost the next post Crychon shows up and says: "Oh by the way, Maybe Dick is not an actual character".

Sylar was the SK who cumulated all the abilities of the people he killed. So he became more and more powerful as long as the game lasted.

When the hell did I get added to the HOF ballot? That's a surprise, for sure. You've been a fixture around here since the very beginning. You've modded two of the best games we've had. You've both won and survived a good number of games. You've easily proven yourself as one of the better players around here. You have a Scummie named after you and are nominated for a few more this year. Yeah, you've earned it.

Having said all of that, I haven't decided if I'm actually going to vote for you or not. But I can easily be bought off for cheap. :p

I call shenanigans on not being a choice for Most Prolific Player...

Sure, the other guys there are great players and deserving of the award, but surely they've been nominated elsewhere/have a nomination under best contribution to mafia discussion!

I've been involved in every game here (except South Park for the most part) and I figure I guy at least deserves his freakin' green participation ribbon if he doesn't get an actual award...

Anyone care to post the sylar role from heroes? Had a quick look and couldn't find it, but interested to see how it worked xD

Welcome to the game. You are Sylar, Self Aligned Power Stealing Killer. While your god given ability may not seem like much, it turned out to be one of the single best abilities possible. Thanks to your ability to understand the way anything in the world works, you can take the powers of those you kill and use them as your own.

Each night phase you must send me the name of one person you wish to attempt to kill. If you are successful in this attempt you will not only kill them, but will also be given their ability to use in the place of your kill at any time.

Some abilities may be automatic, while others may combine to make even greater abilities.

You win when everyone else is eliminated.

He went from that, to being a bomb, future painter(Would get random info about the night an hour before it ended), 50/50 chance of avoiding all abilities(The night he got busted).

LOL, I keep thinking that IER and I should go back one day and finish posting the roles for SWM2 as well. But then I get lazy.

Post them, damn you.

Also, glad on getting a nom somewhere. GruntMark is a solid scum partner.

Some very deserving folks in there, but ive got to lobby for myself in the cult award.

while Crychon's dancing robot was a great play by a cult...

i was able to build a very good cult group as well.

That, and ive never won a scummy :-/

We shall truly understand infinity then.

Mein Gott! Please don't encourage him!

Actually, reading along in Simpsons mafia, he seems to have reined himself in. Wish I knew that in advance, but c'est la vie.

Back at ya buddy.

Im thinking we are in the "It was great to be nominated" category.

Though had we actually pulled it off, we shoulda been handed the award in a landslide.

Cause come'on, that was a rough start and a scum group with a very transparent method of recruitment. And we still managed to way out perform the "primary" scum group.

Seriously, thanks to everyone that voted for me... Both for the award, and for the other election held in Forum Wars:cool:.

Wallbanger, I made a suggestion about next year's award I think should be considered. There are three games right off the bat I would like to be considered as "Game Breaking" awards (by the Mods of those games).

nZanes Barebones, for showing us that a "Typical" game can be SO MUCH MORE.

MJD's Cartoon Chaos, for giving us something completely different, and thus giving mods a completely different way of how to set up games (My Gotham, loosely based on Chaos and DOTT, for example)

Outlaw's Forum Wars, for giving us the "GDS Kingmaker" version, that is also being used loosely in an ongoing game right now.

I think MJD's was the most different/unique/game breaking/newest idea, and thus the award should be named after him. He wasn't able to do it exactly like he wanted, but everyone that played understands what it was he was trying to achieve for that.

I think that's a great idea for next year's awards: Thoughts?
