Welcome to the 2008
GDS Scummie Awards
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/RadioCItyMusicHall.jpg
LIVE from Radio City Music Hall, New York, New York USA
[The hall is literally abuzz with chatter as attendees find their seats. Over the speakers we hear the announcer welcome the audience to the event.]
Announcer: Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the 2nd Annual Scummie Awards. Your Master of Ceremonies this evening is Mr. Jay Sherman.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/sherman.jpg
[Mr. Sherman enters from stage right and steps up to the podium.]
Jay Sherman: Good evening everyone and welcome to the Scummie awards! I just love award shows; everyone's dressed up, anticipation is in the air, and I'm about to deliver an opening monologue that will expose Jon Stewart for the hack he truly is. But of course, the real reason we're here is to celebrate another year of the Mafia community at GDS, and the bigwigs of the Academy of Mafia Practitioners in the Grey Dog Software--
Offstage Voice: STOP!!!!
[Confused, Sherman looks over to stage right as a blonde woman in a pink evening gown, chihuahua on a leash in one hand and attache case in the other, stumbles toward the podium as she trips over her high heels. It is a small miracle that she stays upright.]
Jay Sherman: Why look, it's Elle Woods, the lead character from the Legally Blonde movies!
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/blonde_zoom.jpg
Elle Woods: [waves to the crowd] Hi!
Jay Sherman: Er--hi. Look, first, your movies stink. Second, you're interrupting my monologue, which I poured my very heart and soul into. Third, you're not even on the program tonight. Why are you here?
Elle Woods: Oh, you were about to say the naughty words.
Jay Sherman: What? What are you talking about? They have us on time delay for that [BLEEP]!
Elle Woods: No, not those naughty words! Look, take this--
[Woods pulls a stack of paper from her attache case and hands it to Sherman.]
Jay Sherman: What is this?
Elle Woods: A cease-and-desist order.
Jay Sherman: A cease-and-desist order? I swear I had nothing to do with her, she was just a crazy fan who thought I was Walter Matthau!
Elle Woods: Um, that's not what the order is about.
Jay Sherman: ...oh. Well...this is awkward.
Elle Woods: You're telling me. What this order says is that the Academy may no longer have 'Dog Pound' in its title.
Jay Sherman: Okaaay...I know I'll regret asking this, but why?
Elle Woods: Well, I was trying to find Bruiser's second cousins so I could get them wedding invitations and I found out that there was Mafia in the Dog Pound! I knew something had to be done to help Bruiser's family and friends, so I went to Washington and lobbied for there to be a law banning Mafia in the Dog Pound! So your stupid Academy is going to have to find another name for itself, because if you ever say "Dog Pound" in this ceremony, I'm going to sue them for all they're worth and use the damages to make Legally Blonde 3: Blonde for The One!
Jay Sherman: And I was right; I regret it. Look, since the idea of a third Legally Blonde movie scares me more than watching an Ishtar marathon, we'll just call it the Academy for tonight and figure out some other name later. Look, as long as you're here, could you at least make a presentation?
Elle Woods: Sure!
Jay Sherman: Well, then this hasn't been a complete waste. Anyway where was I--damn it, now there's no more time for my monologue.
[Someone in the audience laughs.]
Jay Sherman: You shut up, Stewart! Anyway, we'll be back for the first presentations after these messages from our sponsors.
Wallbanger
01-26-2009, 12:05 AM
Jay Sherman: And we're back. As agreed, please welcome back Elle Woods for the first presentation. Now Elle, just read the card and everything will be fine.
Elle Woods: You know, you don't have to treat me like an idiot, I did finish law school, you know.
Jay Sherman: Ah, but you play the role so well.
[Woods stares blankly at Sherman.]
Jay Sherman: That, my dear, is called a segue. Run with it.
[Sherman exits stage right, Woods glaring after him.]
Elle Woods: Our first categories have to do with roles and their effective use within the game. Over the past year we've seen some great roles and roles played and claimed so well they have changed the course of the games they were involved in.
First, I'd like to announce the winners in the 'Ugly Duckling/Psychotic Swan' Best Role Award. The voters have spoken -- we have a tie for second between Sylar from Heroes Mafia and Panix from Forum Wars!
And the winner of the Best Role Award goes to...Thanos from Marvel Mafia!
---
Now we go from roles to roleclaims. For the i effin rule Best Role Claim Award, both the runner up and winner came from the same game, and came from the same group, and considering that group won their game, it is testament to the value of a good, believeable roleclaim. Taking second place in the Best Role Claim category is Arrows as Town Charlatan (false) from Lakeside's Grand Finale!
And the 2008 Scummie for Best Role Claim goes to...The Shape as Note Giver (false) from Lakeside's Grand Finale!
---
Some role claims are good, some role claims are not so good, and some just make us laugh. This next category, the trypio Funniest Role Claim Award, recognizes those claims to which we can do nothing else but chuckle. Our runner up in this category is Slim Jim/BlueStar as Maybe Dick from Rocky and Bullwinkle Mafia!
And your winner for Funniest Role Claim: The Aussie as Arrows from Forum Wars!

Jay Sherman: Next up we have the Panix Award, or as it's more commonly known, the Most Likely to Die First Day Award. Making the presentation is an award-winning actor himself; please welcome the star of House, Hugh Laurie!
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/hugh_laurie.jpg
Hugh Laurie: Thanks, Jay. But you know, House isn't the only thing of note I've done in my career.
Jay Sherman: If you make me remember Blackadder I'm going to hurt you.
Hugh Laurie: Proving once again that the Yanks can get neither acting nor football right. Off with you now and let me do my bit.
[Sherman stomps off stage right.]
Hugh Laurie: All right then. Apparently this one was a bit of a rout voting-wise. The runner up for the Panix award is The Aussie!
And the winner of the Panix award: UFC-King!

Jay Sherman: Our next category is a new one this year, the Most Underrated Player award. Our presenter came all the way from the tiny island of Mypos, via Chicago, as I understand it, please welcome Balki Bartokomous!
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/bronson_2603790.jpg
Balki Bartokomous: I am so hhhhappy to be here! Now we do dance of joy!
[Balki grabs Jay and makes him dance.]
Balki Bartokomous: You know, I know how it feels to be underrated. Mypos is an underrated country and shepherding is an underrated job. But I come to America and live with Cousin Larry and even I can be somebody! So if they call you 'underrated' you tell them 'Don't be ridiculous', because underrated is just another way to say underestimated! This is true especially in game of Mafia.
So, the second place winner in Most Underrated Player is...Prophet!
And the winner of the Most Underrated Player Award is...Gonvick!

Jay Sherman: Next up is the SadisticBlessings Best Moderator Award. And who better to present a moderator's award than a game show host? Please welcome the new face of The Price is Right, Drew Carey!
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/drewcarey.jpg
Drew Carey: Thanks Jay, pleasure to be here. Yes, someone has to keep things moving along, make sure everyone has a good time, and keep some form of order even in the midst of chaos. That's what these moderators do, and without them, there is no Mafia to play. So give it up for these, the best of the best as selected by their peers.
Tied for second place in the Best Moderator category were Crychon for Hollywood Horror and the team of Imarevenant/Antithesis for Marvel Mafia!
And the winner of Best Moderator of 2008: theoutlaw321 for his work in Forum Wars and Rocky and Bullwinkle Mafia!

[As Jay Sherman returns to the podium he looks especially nervous.]
Jay Sherman: One more award before we go to commercial break. This is a new category, the "It seemed like a good idea at the time" award, or better known by its short name, Best Botch. And just so it's clear to everyone here, I don't see any particular significance in having this specific person be the presenter for this award. Sometimes it might seem like these things are designed to provide a sense of irony or maybe even be a metaphor for the award, but that's not happening here, nosirree bob, that is just not the case with this award, really and truly. Now I have an urgent matter to attend to over on the other side of the stage and the only reason I'm running is because of the urgency of this particular matter. Please welcome our presenter, Big Smack Scott!
[Sherman sprints to the stage left exit.]
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/BigSmackScott.jpg
Big Smack Scott: Hmph. Not sure what all that was about, I heard Jay was a wrestling fan and I offered to show him a few moves, that's all.
Anyway, sometimes the best laid plans go awry. Happens to everyone now and then. But sometimes the resulting mayhem is so spectacular that it's worth remembering. You can't deny it -- that's why we slow down and stare at car wrecks and it's why we watch reality television. That's what this award is about.
As it turns out we had a tie in this category so the Academy is declaring two winners for the Best Botch Scummie.
Your winners: The Maybe Dick Double False Claim from Rocky and Bullwinkle Mafia, and Electing djthefunkchris to Moderator in Forum Wars!
[The show fades to commercial. Back later with more presentations!]

Jay Sherman: Welcome back to the 2nd Annual Scummie Awards. Our next set of awards are focused on the storytelling aspects of Mafia, and here to present for this set is a man who has told his fair share of stories as an actor, an athlete and an entertainer. Please welcome Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson!
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/the-rock.jpg
The Rock: Hey Sherman, before you leave, The Rock's got a question for you.
Jay Sherman: Sure, Rock, what is it?
The Rock: Now as you know, The Rock's last picture was Get Smart, where The Rock played Agent 23. The Rock looked all over the papers, the internet, the television, the x-ray vision, but The Rock could not find a Jay Sherman review of The Rock's movie. So The Rock has to know -- what does Jay Sherman think of The Rock as an actor?
Jay Sherman: Well, to be honest, I think--
The Rock: IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK, JABRONI! Now stop sneaking peeks at The People's Strudel and get your candy ass out of here!
Jay Sherman: Gee, should have seen that coming.
[Sherman exits stage right.]
The Rock: FINALLY...The ROCK has come back to GDS Mafia! And with him comes news of superior Mafia drama! First off, let's announce the winners of the DOTT Mafia Best Night Scene Award. Taking second place in the Best Night Scene category: Forum Wars, Night 10!
And the winner of the Scummie for Best Night Scene: Forum Wars, Night 1!
Now, great individual writeups are one thing, but to tell an entire story through a mafia game takes a special talent, and that is what the Best Overall Writeups Award is made to recognize. Our runner up for Best Overall Writeups is MMO Mafia, moderated by d_w_w and blackphoenix!
And the Best Overall Writeups Scummie goes to Marvel Mafia, moderated by Imarevenant and Antithesis!
Of course, good writing is only part of the mix in a mafia game, there have to be dramatic moments to write about, too, and that requires players willing to be involved, do their best and give it their all. Those factors create the moments which the Barebones Mafia Most Dramatic Moment In Game Award are designed for. Taking second place in the Most Dramatic Moment voting was the Masons accuse theeutlaw321 in Welcome to Eville!
And the Most Dramatic Moment of 2008: Choosing between The Shape and sprinklefurball as Joker in Gotham Nights!

Jay Sherman: Next up we have the The Jim Force/Panix Funniest Player Award. Here to present is a man of no small comedic talent, please welcome that wacky extraterrestrial -- and no, it's not ALF -- the man from Ork, Mork!
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/95737__mork_l.jpg
Mork: Nanu nanu, you mafia misfits! If there's one thing that's universal, it's laughter. It helps us enjoy everything in life just a little bit more. So when that laughter is brought into our mafia experience it only serves to make it better for everyone. Here now are the kings of mafia comedy as chosen by you. Taking second place in Funniest Player, Comradebot!
And the Scummie for Funniest Player of 2008 goes to...Prophet!

He snatches the award from Mork from Ork, before giving him a totally hetero hug that may have lasted a second or two too long ... but come on ... it's Mork! Anyway, Prophet steps up to the podium, waving the award high above his head.]
Prophet: Oh my ... this is so sudden, and unexpected. First, I want to thank that guy, who told me in the 7th grade, that I look like a dolphin ... he made this dream possible! I gotta thank my mom, who always told me that they're laughing at you, so make it worth their while. And you guys, of course. Outlaw, who believed in me, even when I was blubbering nonsense, and drooling on myself from being slapped so often. And everyone who voted ... thank you all! And I'd especially like to thank Weston House, and writers Jay Goodman, and Robert Shaw ... if not for the genius material they published, I wouldn't have a source to steal from. And ...
[That creepy orchesta music begins to play, as Prophet rambles on about people he'd like to thank, including his barber, that guy at the convenience store who once "left a penny" and George Lucas for allowing him to thief the "Jedi Mind Trick." When it becomes apparent that Prophet isn't leaving the stage, the muscle is called in ...]

LOL, that whole sequence, of MNN using the Auto-lynch to mis-lynch Shape; to T making it rain, and then BJ (Pheonix) targeting the wrong person, during the shortened night phase, despite Astil outing himself as Jean Gray; was just hilarious to watch from the Moders booth at least :D

I quickly realized that everything will always take the path of least resistance regardless of the situation.
Warring families works fine with groups who have no connotative alignment and when there is no "town".
The bad guys cowered and hid like in a normal game while the townies worked together and Megatron tried to make friends and... it was crazy...

You do realise that there was an importance to that game you did though...
It's now a standard set-up, that other's use or try to utilize... some with better results then other's.
In fact, I think we should have an award called the "Cartoon Chaos" award, for outstanding Mafia game idea's put to the test. GDS Mafia would be a good one to win that award.... not to mention GOTHAM (hee hee)!
I didnt' think of it in time for this one, but perhaps next year we can add that in there. MJD's Cartoon Chaos Award has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?
Anyways, here's to you for giving some of us thoughts about the games we never would have without you!

Now, great individual writeups are one thing, but to tell an entire story through a mafia game takes a special talent, and that is what the Best Overall Writeups Award is made to recognize. Our runner up for Best Overall Writeups is MMO Mafia, moderated by d_w_w and blackphoenix!
We're number two! We're number two!

Jay Sherman: Our next category is the theoutlaw321 Best Scum Catcher Award -- and no, I didn't stutter there. Being a scum catcher requires the mind of a detective, and who better to present than one of TV's top detectives! Please welcome to the stage Lieutenant Horatio Crane of the Miami Crime Scene Investigation unit!
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/Caruso.jpg
Horatio Crane: Being a good scum hunter is just like being a good CSI detective; in the end the only thing that matters is the evidence. Also useful is the ability to know a player is a liar, even if you don't know what the lie is yet. These are the traits that win games for the town, and when good scum hunters are on the town's side the bad guys have their work cut out for them. I'm pleased to announce the winners of the Best Scum Catcher category.
The runner up for Best Scum Catcher is...Wallbanger!

Jay Sherman: Now that we've honored scum catchers, we take a moment to consider the other side of the coin, the serial killer. Yes, it's time for the Panix Best Serial Killer category, and since this awards show needs a small injection of culture, we bring to you a presenter who brings style, panache, and no small amount of bloodshed, but bloodshed with a song! From Fleet Street, please welcome that notorious demon barber Sweeney Todd!
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/ScummieAwards2/alg_sweeney_todd1.jpg
Sweeney Todd: 'Ello there! [He offers a platter of small pies to Sherman.] Fancy a meat pie?
Jay Sherman: Umm...I think I'll pass.
Sweeney Todd: Suit yourself. Shave and a haircut then?
Jay Sherman: I'm going to go over there now. [Runs to center stage, stops for a moment, runs back and grabs platter from Sweeney Todd, then runs to stage left exit.]
Sweeney Todd: They can't resist 'em, hard as they try...
Jay Sherman [offstage]: *smack* *slurp* *belch*
Sweeney Todd: We're not bad people, really we aren't. We're just misunderstood, that's all. And in the mafia world, folks like us add drama and excitement to the game, never knowing when we'll show up next! And these top serial killers are worthy, not of your disdain, but of your respect and honor.
Taking second place in the Best Serial Killer category...Prophet as Last Brother Standing in Lakeside's Grand Finale!
And your winner, your Serial Killer supreme, and how fitting is this...djthefunkchris as Panix in Forum Wars!

Sometimes it's literally true in mafia, where you're on your own, having to chart your own course, and sometimes you're a peer among equals as a mason. But either way, you have the potential to change the face of a mafia game at a fundamental level, and these award winners did just that.

What I enjoy about this result, is that we won in the same game, and I think it is the only time we were ever in the same group together.
Shortly after, we were in SW2 as Ultimate enemies (he won with the town though, which IER told me WAS NOT a way we could win.. Maybe it was only for him, but my original PM seemed like I could.... I gripe only because I think I might have (nothing is certain though) played it a bit different... Like killing the Bad guys instead of the good ones).
Anyways, realising Boba Fett was gathering everyone up to lynch me, was so funny to me, because I actually brought it up on purpose to figure out if it was him or not. The way people went all out after me, left me to believe if I outed him, neither of us could win, so when asked, I said to me it was "the obvious" and still no one got it. So I just backed off, and started rooting for him (In the thread, I said so). I just wish he would have crushed all of you instead of winning with you.... because if it was reversed, I would have:cool:.

My apologies about the situation. The way the game was suppose to be set up, what I was telling you was right and Nev wouldn't have won. Unfortunately there was a problem with the role write up. The intention of the Bounty Hunters was to act as dueling SK's with SK win conditions. However, in earlier iterations, they were going to just be survivor types. I think both Rev and I thought we had fixed the write up to mirror the SK roles and didn't. Or it was one of the many times that we found we were both editing the same thread at the same time and accidentally overwriting what the other was doing.
At any rate, we didn't catch it until it was too late to correct and had no choice but to let Nevvy win with the town.

Congratulations to all runner-ups, winners, and especially dj, Arrows & 'Banger.
Also 'Banger, that was very amusing and exceptionally well written. This is why you had one of the best dynasties going back when TEW 2007 was new and shiny.
For those that want to see more of 'Banger's writings, make yourself some popcorn and check this out: http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21424
Thanks, Actarus, I appreciate it. While I love being active in mafia here, I do miss diary writing and perhaps especially my protagonists Kirk and JeriLynn. Writing out the ceremony is fun and more than a bit offbeat, but it does scratch the writing itch for me; again, apologies for stringing it out so long.
I do want to take a moment and very much say THANK YOU to everyone who makes this community what it is. Hard to believe nearly two years have gone by -- practically a lifetime by 'net standards -- since our first game.
I also want to express my thanks for everyone that voted for me in a number of different catagories (two Scummies and two runner-ups) and for electing me to the HoF. I am truly humbled.

I think Wallbanger says some very true things here...I remember coming in during CV2.0 and staying here. The games are run brilliantly and, especially the HoF-ers and some others, really help newer players fit in.
I think the GDS Mafia Community has a set of unwritted rules that cannot be crossed, and it should be that way. Considering the lack of verbal abuse there has been during games (really), and the interest shown in the games, something must be going right.
So, a little bit of applause for all of us.
All we need now, is a Sadistic Blessing's comeback...

Congrats to all the winners.
And a big thanks to everyone that voted for me. And thank you to everyone who has underestimated in the past. I couldn't have done it without you. :D
And thanks to Banger for another quality ceremony. It was a fun read.

A small overview would be nice for the GDS Scummy Archives....
