READ OR DIE

HOW TO PLAY:

- All of you will be PM’d a role and your alignment. The objective is to complete your goals and escape Manhattan alive.

- Each player has been given a role with their own objectives and abilities. Your PM will explain what it does, if you are meant to know. You don’t have to reveal what your role is to the other players, nor will I do so in my updates. Then again there is nothing to stop most of you, so if you feel that it may help, go ahead – just keep in mind that this could also backfire. In other words, claim at your own risk. Likewise, you may lie about who you are if you wish. If you want to use your abilities, PM me. DO NOT post it in the thread.

- This game was designed to take place during one long night in which Manhattan is under siege. Therefore the game phases are not your standard Day and Night. Instead, the phases are split up by the first 45 minutes of an hour and the last 15 minutes of the hour. The game begins during the period 7:00 and 7:45 PM game time, at this time players may post in the thread and should PM the mods to indicate what area of the game map they are moving too, as well as use any abilities they may have. The following phase takes place between 7:45 and 8:00 PM. At this time players may choose to designate another player for sacrifice. Players chosen for sacrifice will be bound to a chosen area of the game map where they will be vulnerable to attack. The first 45 minutes of a game time hour will last 24 real time hours but may end earlier if all night activities are concluded. The last 15 minutes of a game time hour will last 48 hours or until a consensus is reached.

- All voting and discussion is to occur within the thread. You are allowed to nominate another player to sacrifice. Players chosen to be sacrificed will be determined by majority vote, likewise their location on the map will be determined by which area contains the most votes. To vote, post Vote: Username and Location: Map Location (MUST BE IN BOLD!). You can also change your vote, by typing Change Vote: Username and Change Location: Map Location (AGAIN BOLDED!). You can also change your vote to nobody by typing Change Vote: No Vote (IN BOLD!). You can also choose to vote for No Sacrifice by using Vote: No Sacrifice (yeah... BOLDED!), meaning you actively vote to not sacrifice anyone during that phase rather than passively not voting at all. You must post in the thread for your vote to be counted. You do not have to vote if you do not wish to. Non Bolded Votes Will Not be Counted.

- Remember, some roles are more valuable than others – so try to keep them alive!

RULES:

- I know it’s the Mafia Forum, but try not to postwhore in the thread anyway. Feel free to trash talk, accuse, call out other players if you want, but if you’re going to vote, at least state some kind of reason as to why you’re doing so.

- Though I can’t force you to post, I’d love to see active participation. I would advise everyone try to check in with this game at least once a day. Things move fast and you can fall behind pretty easily.

- Once you are dead, you stay dead, and may not participate until the game is over. This includes notes found on your corpse, cryptic messages from the dead, etc, etc. You may also not advise the remaining players on what to do – besides, to prevent cheating, I will not provide the dead with any additional information than they would get if they were still alive. Of course, I’m willing to listen to your theories as to what’s going on. Likewise, I'd appreciate if those not taking part try not help those playing, though general comments on how things are going would be welcomed in the Sign Up Thread. This goes for those lucky enough to have escaped the city as well.

- Unless your role PM specifically states otherwise, all players may not discuss game plan, your role, or alignment outside the thread. Of course, I can’t enforce this, but I believe secretly revealing information amongst each other would spoil the game, so try not to do it.

- Players are not allowed to edit their posts in this thread at all, as it allows for those who make mistakes to remove all of the evidence without any effort. Since I can't enforce this, I strongly encourage all players to scrutinize any posts they notice that have been edited.

-Players are not allowed to cut and paste anything straight from the Role PM except the Role title. No cutting and pasting from the body of the PM. You can paraphrase what your Role PM says but that is all.

-Please play your role/alignment and play to win. We will be strict about this, so please don't make us enforce it.

-Talking about your role after death or to those who have died IS NOT allowed.

-Not everything is as it seems. If something unexpected happens, feel free to question it to me in private, and if I can, I'll answer.

We reserve the right to mod kill if we find out that any of these rules have been broken. Please remember that you are not the only one playing this game, so don't ruin it for everyone else!

The mods for this game are Imarevenant and I Effin Rule. All PMs regarding abilities, questions or anything else should be sent to Imarevenant and I Effin Rule. If you fail to communicate your information then I will go on what I have. You have be warned!

Any and all forms of role betting is discouraged. Attempting to do this will result in your being Mod Killed.

Let us all keep in mind that this is a game and should be an enjoyable experience.

Please Read. Important.

Game map:

What you see in this map is 16 areas.
1. Central Park
2. Upper West Side
3. Upper East Side
4. Theater District
5. Midtown West
6. Midtown East
7. Chelsea
8. Gramercy
9. Greenwich Village
20. East Village
11. SoHo
12. Little Italy
13. Lower East Side
14. Tribeca
15. China Town
16. Lower Manhattan

Note: If you have any questions about player movement just pm either myself or I Effin Rule

During what would be the standard night phase (referred to as the the first 45 minutes of the hour for this game) , you will PM the mods (myself and I Effn Rule) with an area of the map you are moving to. If you happen to decide in an area that is under attack by a monster, you may very well die. You will also have limitations in your movements that will be explained in your role PM.

Furthermore, most of you have 2 goals. The first is shared by all of you, and it’s simply to survive and escape Manhattan. The secondary goal will be described in your role PM.

You may choose to put other players up for sacrifice through majority vote. During the what would be the standard Day Phase (referred to as the the last 15 minutes of the hour for this game) you need to indicate who you want to be sacrificed through the standard Vote: Player XXXX mechanic and you must also choose which area to string the other player up in. To make these decisions. Simply post:

Vote: Player X
Location: Tribeca

I'll also reiterate. Role claim and reveal your location at your own risks!!!!

March 4th, 2009

His heart was pounding. This was it! This was the big break he had been waiting for. Sure some had to die to get this far, but they were weak. They didn’t share his vision or his passion. This was his hour, and he was going to savor every minute of it.

He couldn’t help but peek from behind the curtain. Just as he had hoped; a full house, waiting to see what he brought to the world. Finally it was time for the unveiling, finally he’d get the recognition he’d longed for.

He slowly paced up to the front of the stage. Removed his hat and bowed to the audience. The anticipation of the crowd was palpable and he let them stew in it for just a second.

He approached the microphone, but, he wasn’t one for long drawn out speeches. A simple introduction was all the guest of honor would need.

“Ladies and Gentlemen... I give you... KONG! THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD!”

The curtain drew back as the orchestra began to play the ominous tune the man had picked out himself. Woman gasped and children cried as the 30 Foot ape was revealed. Many others simply sat in stunned silence. He simply grinned.

The stage suddenly sprung to life as dancers sporting wooden masks and nothing more than loin clothes filled the stage performing a tribal dance. Fiery explosions erupted as the hired MC began to tell the tale of “Kong’s” capture. The crowd itself jumped to life erupting in applause, save for just a few.

These few saw no reason for applause. Perhaps they were unimpressed with the exposition. Or more likely, perhaps they noticed the sadness in the beast’s eyes.

Whichever the case, that sadness was about to be replaced by rage.

The bulbs flashed as photographers began to take pictures, all of them hoping their photo would be the one to properly capture the event. Either not noticing or caring as the beast began to thrash about in distress.

He however, did notice, and knowing first hand what his “Kong” was capable of, desperately tried to stop the photographers. However, by then it was too late.

Alone, scared, and confused, “Kong” began to thrash about causing the metal stand which he had been bound to creak and sway. In theory it would keep the beast bound to the stage where he couldn’t hurt anybody, but it was never tested to withstand the full force of the 30 foot ape.

It took all of 2 minutes for “Kong” to break free. Still full of rage he leapt into the crowd, crushing the slower to react members of the audience beneath his weight. He then jumped to the balcony, trying to scale it before the structure buckled and collapsed under the pressure. This only continued to anger the beast as he violently cut through the now empty rows of theater seats. He continued his wrath until something, familiar, caught his eye.

No, not something; someone.

Hiding in the corner the woman was almost completely concealed, all but her striking blonde hair. Slowly, calmly the beast approached. His anger seemingly subsided. He scooped the woman up, carefully laying her in the palm of his hand. Finally he turned her around, and the rage returned. That wasn’t who he thought it was.

The beast violently threw the woman across the theater; her body crashing against the rubble which used to be theater seating. Approaching the main exit of the building the beast looked back one last time and saw the man, still standing on the stage; the very man responsible for his current plight. With fire in his eyes he let loose a vicious roar, perhaps as a warning, before bounding through the face of the building and entering the city.

Leaving the man alone in the empty, nearly collapsed theater.

…………………

Little Johnny was a curious kid. He liked nothing more but to sit on the rooftop of his parent’s apartment building. Often times liking nothing more but to sit and watch. Sometimes he’d gaze at the stars other times, he’d watch the people march by like ants in his own twisted ant farm.

Tonight however, he was watching the comings and goings of the various boats in the bay. One in particular caught his eye. An exceptionally large Oil Tanker; one that had been sitting in the same spot for a number of hours. Little Johnny had found that particularly peculiar as every other ship came and went with ease. But this ship had been sitting idle for quite some time.

It was still too far for him to see clearly what was going on, even with his telescope he could never be certain about what was happening inside the vessel. Not knowing however had failed to quell his curiosity. And so, he continued to watch.

And then something exceedingly unexpected occurred. A large swell of water rose up and engulfed the tanker tossing the large vessel on its side. The sound of the water crashing upon the ships hull was akin to an explosion. Terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time.

And if that weren’t peculiar enough, the ripple from wave continued to move. Not just move mind you. It began to gain speed as it headed in the direction of Liberty Island.

Little Johnny became couldn’t contain his excitement; he had never witnessed an event such as this before. The swell continued to speed up and grew in size. Thirteen feet, fifteen; by the time it made contact with the island it had grown upwards of 30 feet. The force of its impact engulfing the island and sending a chunk of the statue of liberty hurling to the sea.

Yet still, Little Johnny couldn’t look away.

And that’s when he saw it. It was like nothing he had ever seen. Taller than most buildings it raised up out of the water, approaching the statue that had been a symbol of the great city. Was it a crustacean, a spider, mutated whale, even Johnny couldn’t be certain. He just knew that he couldn’t look away no matter how frightened or how terrifying the thing was.

It stood there next to the statue for just a moment, allowing a few terrified souls to marvel at its existence. Then it struck. Taking a swipe at the statue it sent the head of the structure hurtling toward Manhattan.

And just as quickly it was gone, back in the water.

However, it wasn’t hard to tell where it was going. The swell of water once again rose, gaining speed, as it head straight for the heart of New York City.

Binghamton is the biggest city in the area. You're pretty far off from most other major parts of NY. I don't really know much about Binghamton besides that. It could be worse, you could be stuck up by Plattsburgh.

Does it really matter what monsters we're running from?

Oh, and hi to everyone playing!

I grew up in Upstate NY ... it's gorgeous. Or was, before I left. Depending on the area, though, you might need to acclimate to the smell of manure. lol

I've got no issue with upstate New York. Just nothing to do up there.

I prefer it on Long Island by far.

Lies! We have pool halls, and bars, and pool halls with bars, and ... a mall ...

Yeah, we got nuffin. lol

Well the camp is near a town called Binghamton. Is that any help? I'm from Scotland so my knowledge of upstate NY so far consists of what I've read on wikipedia.

Binghamtom is nice. Further northwest than where I grew up, but in my brief experience in the area, it was gorgeous. Very foresty.

Yes it matters! If you're running from a water monster, you want to go inland. If you're running from a Yeti, go south. You stand in the street, flailing your arms, and you're gonna be eaten. lol

Ah, now see, that sounds a great place to spend your summer. Thanks Prophet!

Sure thing. Just make sure you have cabins. When I was a kid, I went camping in the Adirondacks, and we slept in lean-to's. I'm just curious if escaping Manhattan is as simple as taking a stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge.

My gut says... no, it won't be that easy on us. Or maybe it is, considering that it appears many roles have secondary goals they need to achieve before escaping.

Seems like Kong would be... where, the theatre district right now? And Clover would be raging over in the southwest area... maybe in Lower Manhattan?
Which would make since... Kong could hit the north or center, while Clover has the south and the lower parts of the central island possibly at risk, meaning there's no CLEAR safe direction to run in.

/sigh

Look, I know what you are doing, this passive aggressive mode of defiance is cute if not more than a little childish. But you aren't getting what you want alright, you are not going to get a rise out of me at this time.

I will say, you were asked more than a few times to stop this in Sin, I sent you a PM this morning about your spamming of vote counts in that game as well.

I know you are just going to say, you weren't asked to stop in this game. So I'm going to ask you to think, and realize that since I asked you in Sin not to do this, I would have probably not wanted you to do the same thing in a game in which I'm the lead Mod.

I'm also going to formally and publicly ask you, in this game, to stop making Mod like posts.

Myself and IER are capable mods and we've got things handled. And in the event that we need a backup to help with Vote Counts, Antithesis has been gracious enough to offer his help. And as he is someone I've modded with in the past, I'm comfortable with his help.

In the future, if you see that I'm the Lead Mod of the game, just assume that I would rather you not post vote counts or other Mod like posts.

I would have rather handled this in PM but it's obvious, after your spamming of the Sin game today after I sent you a PM asking you to stop doing it just this morning, that you aren't going to respond. So, this is my only recourse.

Please, Stop.

Thank You.

March 4; 7:00PM - 7:45PM

He looked out from his window as the city erupted around him, but he didn’t seem to care. Truth is he cared about very little; not even himself. Everything he was, came from the status symbol of his clothes, apartment, even his business card. After tonight he was sure, none of that would matter anymore.

Well normal people ran and cowered in fear. He saw an opportunity. One in which he’d get to do what he truly loved. Dissect the pretty girls.

He gathered his belongings and left his building. Upon leaving he saw a figure duck down an alley. Intrigued he followed as he griped the knife in his coat pocket. He came up on the figure quickly, trying to get a better look.

Too bad.

This was definitely not a pretty girl. Just a man, a particularly scrawny one at that. “I could take him” he thought to himself. But no, he wasn’t in the mood. Not tonight, tonight he needed to find himself a lady.

…………………

He watched as his prize roared defiantly and bounded from sight. This night, could not have gone worse. He winced as he realized where the blame would fall for the trouble that ape would cause out there.

But, what more could have been done? He restrained the beast as best as anyone else could have. How could he have known the effects the flashing bulbs would have on the animal. No. This couldn’t have been his fault.

Then whose was it?

He looked around the theater, his eyes catching the broken body of a woman lying atop a mound of rubble. He couldn’t take his eyes off the long blond hair.

It was her. She caused this. She knew the effect she had on the dumb ape. She could have kept him docile, but she went and grew a conscious. Caring more for the animal’s well being than she did for those in the audience. She could have prevented all this. She could have saved a countless number of lives. She could have made this night spectacular.

The man looked around the theater one last time and thought that maybe it was time to make her answer for her actions.

…………………

He wanted to help, he was just overwhelmed. Funny that. At one time he had been a great service to this city, but now, he didn’t even know where to start.

Another was facing a desperate race against time. He had no time to think, he just knew that if he didn’t get there fast enough than all that he had ever loved would be gone.

Perhaps it was fate that brought them together, or maybe just poor visibility.

…………………

Chaos was ensuing in every direction, but the commotion in Little Italy was justified.

The towering creature was destroying everything in sight. The sacred wasn’t even safe as the strange beast effortlessly brought Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral to the ground.

Clouds of ash and dust ran through the streets like a deep fog; slowing down those trying to flee.

Those still capable of getting away from the monstrosity were doing everything in their power to ensure the safety of themselves and their loved ones.

Nearly everyone.

One woman in particular was lagging behind. No sign of wounds or injury, however she wasn’t quite in the hurry the others were. Maybe the dust had gotten to here, or perhaps it was something else.

The reason mattered little as the enormous foot came crashing down.

It would take time for the monster to move on and more time for the dust to settle, but there she was. Her body crushed and disfigured.

There were many bodies left on the streets, but this one was different.

This one was smiling.

…………………

The older gentleman had been looking for others to help, when from around a corner a younger man emerged. No time to slow down. The younger man, plowed into the older gentleman at full speed, sending both men sprawling to the concrete.

Wasting no time, the younger man, sprang back to his feet, but upon doing so became dizzy, nearly passing out.

Catching the other man, the older gentleman remarked, “Slow down son, I know there are terrible things about, but you are going to get yourself killed running around corners like that.”

Regaining his bearings the younger man nodded. “Thanks, but I have no time to chat. I have to get out of here.”

“You’re right we should get out of the city. Come on, we can take….”

“No, I’m sorry, you don’t understand. She’s dying, I have to save her.”

The older gentleman looked at the other man for a moment. He had wanted to help. One person at a time if need be.

“All right son, let’s go get her.”

…………………

He stepped out of the theater and couldn’t believe what he saw. The one he was after, was headed straight for him. Perhaps his luck would change after all.

“Oh my god, Carl! What happened, where is he?”

He clenched his lips and gave the woman a cold stare. His heart was pounding. In the back of his mind he thought when presented with the opportunity he would back down. But that wasn’t the case; he wanted nothing more than to punish her.

She shivered as the man before her stared through her. Scared, she knew there was nothing she could do but plead.

“Carl, you can’t blame me for….”

Before she could finish her thought, the man struck her with his fist sending her hard to the street. He wasted no time and straddled the woman’s chest.

“This was your Fault! You ruined my Ape!” he screamed as he wrapped his arms around the woman’s neck. He squeezed with all his strength in his mind hoping to regain some of the power he lost when that animal broke free and made a mess of his life. He screamed again as he squeezed harder, ignoring the woman clawing at his arms.

Finally feeling her final breath he released his grip and looked down at the woman. His shoulders slumped. He though this would make him feel better. But the reality was that this wouldn’t change anything. He’d still be looked at as the person responsible for damage done this night.

He was still ruined.

Slowly he stood and surveyed the destruction around him. It was time to leave.

…………………

She effortlessly traversed the debris and mass of fleeing people as she rode her bike through the streets of Uptown Manhattan. Sure it wasn’t what she was used to, but her unique skills lent to handling herself on two wheels.

This was going to be a long night she thought to herself. She was going to make a name and get the notoriety she so deserved. Sure she was already well known among the right circles but braving the dangers of this night and being the last survivor would make her a household name. And damn would it feel good to stick it to the boys club for once.

She was lost in thought when she witnessed the explosion. Explosion!? There had been no fire, no smoke. But something had to have ripped through that building, sending a handful of people hurtling through the air. It took her a second to realize what had happened. And in that second, the beast emerged.

Quickly she turned around as the beast headed her way.

She peddled as fast as she could, but each time she looked back the beast was that much closer. This wouldn’t do, she couldn’t out run it. In desperation she began to weave in and out of the abandoned and parked cars on the street, sporadically glancing back as the beast followed her every move. Still, it gained on her, as it bound over and through the cars as effortlessly as she weaved between them.

She had begun to give up hope when she spotted it, an open manhole. She stopped and turned to see the beast jumping through the air straight at her. There was nothing else she could do but dive.

As the beast landed in the spot she had been standing, she began to fall. She fell nearly 20 feet to the hard concrete down below. She was hurt, barely conscious but at least alive.

As the beast pounded the pavement grunting in frustration she lied in the filthy sewer content to lay there until he was gone.

…………………

Among the chaos of the two monsters having their way with the city, came a slow rumble. Those that were close enough to see gave pause and looked toward the coast. The water began to bubble as if someone set the Atlantic into a simmer.

Too terrified to move the citizens could only watch as the bubbling came faster and the rumble grew louder. Finally, the shiny point of a scale toped the surface sending people into a panic. And then those terrifying, yellow eyes stared back at the city as the rest of the lizard like creature emerged. Huge, fierce, it’s purpose unknown to those that witnessed its arrival.

Setting foot on land, the giant lizard startled the crowd of onlookers with a powerful shrieking roar.

The rest of the city stopped when it heard the distinct sound and for a moment the two terrifying monsters paused and took notice as well.

This may be a small brained question, but in the interest of selfish means, what would happen if we didn't sacrifice anyone? I mean, the thinking is we tie someone to a lamp post, and the monsters move to that section of the city, to kill the sacrifice ... so the only downfall to not killing one of our own is knowing where the monsters will be, right?

This is by no means a final thought on the matter, simply wondering aloud if I've missed an underlying drawback to feeding the beasts.

I think it's also possible that due to their size, they can travel to any of the 16 sections per night phase. They can step from Lower Manhatten to the Upper West Side.

I think I'm onboard with GM's theory. I don't see the monsters being capable of moving to any random part of the city at any point. I mean, Clover and Kong leave a trail of destruction in their wake... that needs to be accounted for. Would be weird to have Clover pop from Lower Manhattan to the Theater District without touching anything inbetween.

And, for now, the evidence suggest the monster's have a limited range per phase. Neither creature went too far from where they started out at.

As someone else said, I guess it lures one (or more?) monster to the area that player is in, giving the rest of us a free pass to do whatever it is we need to do. Might turn out to be pretty handy in the long run but I'm not sure we need to by lynching people this early on, especially if some people actually have roles that might be able to save us from monsters.

However, I do have a question... where would you guys say St Pat's Cathedral is? I'm tracking where these monsters are going and I'm not sure if you'd say thats in Midtown East or the Theatre District, cos the Google map I used puts it somewhere near the line.

My thought is Godzilla is there to keep the other monsters busy while we humans run for the hills.

I hope so. But doesn't change anything --- I want to be where they are not. Him included. He's clumsy, especially with that awkward tail. I could totally see him knocking a building over on me.

Trying to track monsters and I'm assuming they can only move 1 area at a time... so going by that:

- Kong started in the Theatre District and could now be in Midtown East, Midtown West or Grammercy, assuming he moved at all.
- Cloverfield is in Little Italy, meaning it probably started in the Lower East Side.
- Godzilla has just arrived, but where? Research tells me that he appears first at the Fulton Fish market but my google-fu isn't strong enough to find where that is. Help please. :)

Someone may want to double check this for me, as I did this super quick but we have three people with zero posts since this game began:

10. Arrows
19. Shigakai
25. The Archer

That is correct. But Archer and Arrows have both lurked around the boards. I assume they were capable of being active last night.

(And I dont think its appropiate to discuss BSG. Not only is it off topic, but some people Tivo that stuff and I'd hate to spoil.)
