Richard DeVos Jr. walks up to the podium to begin the press conference.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/devos_bay_city.jpg

DeVos: Today is a big day in Magic history as we announce a regime change. After a disappointing end to our season with such great expectations we decide to sit down with the main people in our organization and see what we did right, wrong, and where we can and need to improve. We talked to everyone from the coaching staff, players, and even the guy who sleeps the arena floor before and after the game.

DeVos pauses while everyone in attendance laughs.

DeVos: We were able to find things we could tinker with that we hope will improve our team going forward. First thing that happened is Otis Smith stepped down from his position as G.M and took over the role of team president. This started the search for the next G.M of the Orlando Magic. We interviewed many names and narrowed the list down to who we believe can be the next great GM in NBA history. Not many times in my life as a business man have I talked to a man who completely wowed me as I talked to him, but the man to my left did that more than once. So without further ado I introduce Alonzo Mourning as the new GM of the Orlando Magic.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/Zo.jpg

Everyone claps as DeVos shakes Zo’s hand and welcomes him up. Zo lets the applause die down so he can begin.

Zo: Thank you Richard for that great introduction and thank you to the Orlando Magic, it’s employees, players, and fans for being so welcoming to me this week. I am lucky because I am not coming into an organization that is rebuilding or on the verge of contending with a couple more moves. I am coming to a team that has played in the Eastern Conference Finals the last two years and the NBA finals just two years ago. In saying that though Orlando is still a team in limbo, we go from one of the most talented teams in the league to not being the most talented in our own division.

Zo collects his thoughts and continues

Zo: I interviewed for this job not because I saw it as getting my foot in the door, but because I saw a challenge that I know I can beat. I am here to take the Orlando Magic to new heights as a franchise.

Zo stops and looks at Richard, who gets up and tells the press that the floor is now open for questions.

The first report asks Alonzo what his thoughts about the big three going to Miami.

Zo: Well first it’s only two going to Miami in James and Chris. Honestly though it was there choice, I know a lot of people have been bashing them and going about it as bad for basketball, but I see it as just another challenge. Personally I thought about coming out of retirement to play for them.

People giggle.

Zo: But they are a rival and a pretty big one. So our number 2 goal outside of winning the title is making the Miami Heat hate going up against the Orlando Magic.

Reporter number two asks if he has sat down with Dwight Howard yet.

Zo: not face to face, but I have chatted with him over the phone. He is currently in Houston with Hakeem working on his offensives moves. I am extremely excited to meet with him face to face though and maybe giving some of my own moves if he wants them.

Reporter asks if the current roster will be the one on opening day.

Zo: That’d be hard to answer because you never know if someone will come up on the free agent market or someone impresses in the summer leagues. For now yes, but we will always explore options to make our team better.

Another reporter asks him there will be changes to the coaching staff.

Zo: That is completely up to Stan Van. I know a couple people I have met in my time who I think would be a great asset to any team, but I will only give those names to Stan if he comes to me and ask for a couple names. Besides that the coaching staff and how the game is run is completely up to Stan. Him and I will work together to find the right players for the team and me and my people will look for other players who can come and contribute to the team, whether it be by the draft or through free agency.

Another reporter asks after seeing James, Amare, and Bosh leave there team for others, does Dwight expiring contract concern him.

Zo: I think every expiring contract scares any GM especially a star and game changer like Dwight Howard. All we can do is make this a place Dwight wants to end his career as we build more stars around him. I think Dwight and Stan are a great combination who have done a lot with the roster moves and changes that have gone on around them.

Zo thanks the crowd and Richard says that will be it for this press conference and thanks everyone for attending. Zo and Richard talk for a second and then Zo ends the conversation with

Zo: Time to go build a winner.

Breaking news out of Orlando!

Dan Patrick: Less than two weeks after taking over for the Orlando Magic, Alonzo Mourning makes his first blockbuster trade. The Magic and Wiz have dealt to big under achieving names. The Magic trade Rashard Lewis to the Washington Wizard for the troubled Gilbert Arenas.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/Lewis.jpghttp://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/arenas.jpg

Dan: We are now joined by NBA analyst Jalen Rose and Jalen this a couple years ago would have seemed like a huge trade, but now it’s just one struggling huge contract for another struggling contract both who have worn their welcome out.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/Rose.jpg

Jalen: In a sense yes, I think both franchises realized that these two players need a change of scenery. Gilbert of course has had injury troubles and recently legal issues. Still only 28 he and Jameer Nelson will now make probably the best PG combination in the league depending on how well each plays of course. Lewis on the other hand was a perfect teammate for the Magic, but he will also be the 2nd highest paid player in the NBA for the next three years and his numbers weren’t living up to that contract. I think the reason Washington made this trade is first, they are starting the new era with John Wall a position in which Gilbert Arenas plays. Second, with the legal issues I think the Wizard just wanted Arenas away from the franchise so they can completely rebuild without him. Third is the contract situation, while their cap number will be higher with Lewis, he comes off the books a lot sooner and gives them a trade piece of an expiring contract in another two years. Lewis has been to the Finals in which is played a key role on that Magic team, he will now be seen as the veteran leadership the Wiz might need.

For the Magic this trade makes sense for a couple reasons as well. First, Orlando gets that player who can create his own shot which they hoped they had got last year with Vince Carter. Now Arenas isn’t as good three years ago, but at 28 and a couple years removed from the injuries Gilbert could still regain his form to where Lewis pretty much was on the decline. Second, Ryan Anderson, he was the big piece in the Vince Carter deal, remember that the trade at first was just going to be Rafer Alston, Tony Battie, and money for Vince Carter, but the Magic wanted Ryan Anderson and gave up another player in Courtney Lee who they were very high on. Anderson spent last year as a role player, but now I think he is ready to step up and be a more meaningful player for this team. Last Gilbert and Jameer Nelson now become the best PG combination in the league. They have both battled injuries, but both are former All-Stars who are still in their primes. If Nelson were to get hurt and struggles or vice versa with Gilbert, either one can take over and run the offense.

Patrick then ask Rose if there are downsides to this deal.

Rose: Of course there is always a downside, first for the Magic you mess with the chemistry of a team that went to two straight Eastern Conference Finals. How will Gilbert Arenas and Jameer get along knowing one isn’t going to start. Second for the Wiz they now take away any real scorer on the team, sure John Wall will score and Lewis can produce 15 points a game, but Wall will have to get accustomed to the NBA style. Last is for the Magic, Lewis was only two years away from being a trade piece as an expiring contract and could have helped a team like the Hornets in a sign and trade for someone like Chris Paul. Now they not only take on another year because Arenas has a player option, but Gilbert won’t be a trade piece for another 3 years and then at that point a new CBA or Arenas high salary might make it hard to move him if they might want to go that way.

Patrick ask what is the best case scenario for both teams.

Rose: Well the Wizards are rebuilding, so for them it would be the Lewis comes in, puts up nice numbers, and doesn’t do anything to harm the team and just continue to be a great teammate which he probably will be. For the Magic best case is Gilbert regains form and they continue to challenge for a title.

Patrick then ask worst case

Rose: For the Wizard it’s kind of hard to find a worst case scenario. I mean Lewis could start battling injuries and then your deal with a guy who is getting paid the second highest in the league for the next three years who isn’t on the floor, but again they are a rebuilding franchise and Lewis is a part of that so they really don’t have a worst case scenario

For the Magic it Gilbert Arenas and what Gilbert Arenas are you going to get. Will he come in and be a solid teammate and player, or will he battle injuries and hurt your team in the long run because he is on the books for the huge contract for the next 4 years. Also how will him and Jameer work together.

Patrick ask, so who got the better end of the deal

Rose: I think currently the Wiz did. Whatever Lewis gives to the Wiz will be either expected or more than expected. They get rid of the last of their big three and now can completely start new. Potentially though the Magic have the most to gain from this trade. Gilbert could regain that form, leave his issues in Washington behind him and become Dwight Howard’s Penny Hardaway.

Patrick: well Jalen this is a big trade in terms of what it could bring, but like everything we are going to have to wait and see what comes from this, thank you so much for joining us today and dropping some knowledge on us.

Rose: No problem.

I will be using the rosters as of 4/1/11 so all the big trades and changes will have happened. I will count them as off-season moves.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/patrick1103.jpg

Dan: Dan Patrick here again and last week we broke news that Orlando and Washington made a trade. Well Orlando just one week later is at it again. Orlando, Phoenix, and Toronto have made a three team deal. The trade breaks down as this, from Raptors Hedo Turkoglu to the Suns for Leandro Barbosa and Dwayne Jones. Then Suns trade Hedo, J-Rich and 2nd year man Earl Clark to the Magic for Vince Carter, Marcin Gortat, and Mickael Pietrus.

Dan: We welcome again to the show a man who has been a part of some trades in his day, Jalen Rose as we breakdown this deal. Welcome to the show again Jalen.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/Rose-1.jpg

Rose: Thank you for having me Dan.

Dan asks Jalen why the Magic have shaken up their roster so much.

Rose: I personally don’t know other then what I can assume. I would guess that Mourning and Stan looked at the roster after the crazy off-season and said we cannot win with this roster. So they went out and shook some bushes to see what type of talent they could get without breaking up the core of Dwight Howard and Jameer Nelson their two leaders. It goes like this though; whenever someone new comes in they want to bring their guys in quickly because if you are going to fail, then you want to fail with your guys. I think these two trades were 50/50 on that. I think Zo and Stan to make these trades had to both agree it needed to be changed. It gives them a prospect in Earl Clark who the Magic seem to be high on and it opens the way for Daniel Orton and Ryan Anderson to be the main backups and get more time on the court.

Dan: So with this trade, what can be expect from a team that had 5 starter returning from an Eastern Conference Finals team, to a team that will return 2 starters now.

Rose: Well you can only safely assume that they are returning one starter and that is Dwight Howard. There is still about 5 weeks until the start of training camp so a bunch can still happen to Jameer. Plus, he might not be the starting PG anymore if Gilbert comes in and performs like he use to.

Dan: Now Toronto just signed Hedo last year to a 5 year 50 million dollar deal and already they trade him?

Rose: Well this was an easy trade for Toronto. First, Hedo similar to Gilbert Arenas wore out his welcome in Toronto and they like the Wizards were pretty much blowing up the team and getting rid of people who didn’t fit their plans for the next 5 years, which Hedo didn’t fall into. The Suns who are coming off a Conference Finals appears are also in a somewhat odd transtion trying to hold things together. They didn’t resign Amare and so they went out and spent money on other big men. By trading Leandro to the Raptors and then Hedo to the Magic for esstenial Carter’s contract, they get a contract they can get rid of next year and clear 17 million off their cap. I think eventually this year you will see them try to move Steve Nash as well which would mean this team would eliminate over about 32 million dollars from their team cap and can put that money towards rebuilding with younger players.

Dan: So where do the Magic sit for you now with this trade

Rose: They are in a worse spot to me than before they even started trading. I thought they were the 3rd maybe 4th depending on if the Hawks or Bulls stepped up. Now I truly do think the Hawks and Bulls are better than this team. The possibility they could have four new starters next year is really big and I know people are going to call in and say hey Hedo, Jameer, and Howard have over 200 something games together, but the Magic’s offense has changed since Hedo left. First Hedo isn’t the same player he was when he left, 2nd Stan wants to get Howard more touches, and 3rd I believe Brandon Bass will take over the PF position this year which means more of a traditional offense for the Magic. He has been working out all summer in Orlando and has really made great strides from what I hear. Now Hedo could regain his success he had the first time with the Magic and they could be better off with this trade than before. J-Rich is about 4 or 5 years younger than Carter and can drive to the hoop better than Carter. Earl Clark like Ryan Anderson last year was the big piece of the trade to the Magic which is why they gave up the dependable big man Marcin Gortat, and Hedo can run the offense if need be.

Dan: So who won this trade?

Rose: I would say it’s a push honestly. While the Suns do get rid of Leandro’s contract, they absorb Gortat who they are fine with because they see him as a starter. Now Pietrus has a player option and while his number didn’t warrant a bigger contract he might be able to get one this year with a down free agency that is expected. I think for now though the Suns win this trade. They cleared space and they are preparing for the 2012 free agent class were we could see Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Deron Williams, and a couple players like Brandon Jennings and company becoming RFA.

Dan: Man Paul and Howard in a fast paced offense that saw players like Amare and Steve Nash have career years that’d be scary. One last question, you brought Earl Clark up as being the big piece to the Magic in this trade. He was 14 overall just last year by this Suns team. Why did they give up so fast?

Rose: Again I don’t know exactly why and I don’t think it’s because they gave up on him. He was drafted to a team that was fueling up to contend for a NBA title and most rookies don’t play right away for teams like that. He’s has a good frame, he’s young, and is a very smart kid. It’s weird in fact, because even though these trades are to continue to contend in the East Earl Clark and Ryan Anderson are young pieces that can grow within the organization into solid players. The Magic haven’t been able to get Howard a partner so it looks like they might be hoping one of them develops into one.

Dan: Jalen, thank you again for dropping everything and coming in and talking to us.

Rose: ah Dan no problem. You know I love coming on.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/DwightHoward.png

Dwight is the Star of our team and the best big man in the game. Dwight has been working on his offensive game all summer and looks to have a monster season for the Orlando Magic

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/BrandonBass.png

Brandon Bass spent the 09-10 season on the bench and in the doghouse. Now a full year under Stan Van’s system and an offseason of bulking up and gaining strength, Bass looks to take over the Power Forward position and give Dwight a little help.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/HedoTurkogluNBA-2.png

Back for his second stint, Hedo Turkoglu is ready to rebound from a dismal 09 season. Hedo comes back to an offense which saw him win the NBA Most Improved Player award. Hedo will take back is Small Forward position, but if he struggles don’t be shocked to see Q-Rich, Earl Clark, and Ryan Anderson split more minutes there.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/JasonRichardsonNBA-2.png

Jason Richardson is with his 4 team in his career and he hopes he can regain some of his form that made him an All-Star in the league. With a dominant big man in front of him and the most talented team he has ever been on J-Rich could see his numbers climb.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/GilbertArenas.png

In what many people found odd the Orlando Magic made a move for former troubled superstar Gilbert Arenas. Then to make it even more awkward around Orlando Gilbert came in and Jameer Nelson said he would sit and become the 6th man so Gilbert could start. Gilbert will now start next to Dwight Howard and hopes that a new team will help him regain form.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/jameer-nelson-ORL1.png

Jameer takes over the Magic’s 6th man position this year. Jameer showed his leadership by ending a potential team conflict before it even started in stepping away from the PG battle this season. Jameer will still likely get his minutes, but how will his production fare his Gilbert does well and his minutes start going to a more true 6th man.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/RyanAnderson.png

Is Ryan Anderson the next Rashard Lewis for the Magic? This season will give us a glimpse into whether or not he is that player. Anderson like others on this Magic team is looking to find his niche on the team in his 2nd year.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/jjredick.png

JJ Redick was 4 days away from being the Chicago Bulls’ new starting SG. Now JJ Redick comes back to the Magic and looks forward to building on last year’s success and taking over as the SG position.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/EarlClark-2.png

Earl comes over in the offseason trade of Vince Carter. Stan and company look for Clark to improve from last year in hopes he can one day become a dependable player.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/DanielOrton.png

With Marcin Gortat now in Phoenix, Orton takes over as the backup center for Dwight Howard. One of the five Kentucky Wildcat players drafted in the first round this past year Orton was the least talked about. Unlike the others though, he’ll gets guidance from the best player in the league at his position. The Magic only expect Orton to keep Howard fresh, get mop duty, and improve his game to have a bigger impact next year.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/Q-Rich.png

Richardson is in a weird position right now. One of Otis Smith’s last signing as a GM. Richardson thought he was coming in to challenge Lewis for playing time at the SF position. Now Richardson isn’t even considered a role player for the team. Richardson has a friendly contract and could be used a trade bait down the road.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/ChrisDuhon.png

Much like Richardson, Duhon is in place for the Magic. He was signed to be the second PG on the team, but with Jameer and Gilbert now 1 and 2 Duhon takes over the 3rd PG position which usually means mop up work.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/MalilikAllen.png

Allen is just here to fill a roster spot for the Magic. He isn’t young and never been a special player. He will get mop up work when he dresses.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/_rashad_20mccants_large.jpg

McCants was another late offseason add for depth and the pure fact he can stroke it from deep.

Jake Robinson is the 15th man on this team and at 23 is more of a developmental player. He's big reason for being on the team is his ability to drain the deep ball.

Game analysis

The Offense was there today, but I am worried about the Magic's defense. Jason Richardson let a nice young SG in Nick Young drop 28 on him. Dwight Howard did well in the post, but I expect him to improve of those numbers. It was overall a very good and balance offense by the Magic. I am looking forward to more games with a team where anyone can score.

Wizards: Nick Young: If Nick continues to put numbers like this up, then him and John Wall could be a force in a couple years.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/GilbertArenas.png

Magic: Gilbert Arenas: Gilbert came out to a great game against his old team. 16 points and 9 assist is what Stan Van and company hope Arenas can continue these numbers and if he can then a Finals comeback could be in the future.

Ernie: Good evening and welcome back to the wrap up of tonight’s Magic vs Wizards game. I am Ernie Johnson and as always I am joined by Kenny “The Jet” Smith and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley and guys tonight we saw the new look Magic in a pretty impressive win.

Kenny: You know Charles and I were talking about this team coming into the game and we were worried about them. We didn’t know where their second score was outside of Dwight Howard. But this team came out tonight and looked extremely impressive to me.

Barkley: I must say I was worried how they would flow together and if all of these different egos could work together, but things ran smoothly for Stan and company.

Ernie: Now they faced the Wizards who aren’t really title contenders, but Kenny you always say you can take positive and negative things from any game. What were some things you liked and didn’t like?

Smith: I will have to go look at the tapes to truly find everything, but I did take a couple things from this win. First of all I talked about who was the second scorer on this team. I think we found out that the Magic can still score at will and if they can continue to shoot like that then they will be fine.

Barkley: I saw something that really irked me. This team outside of Earl Clark and Dwight Howard doesn’t know what defense is. Jason Richardson and JJ Redick gave up way to many points to Nick Young. Wall didn’t have a good shooting game, but he blew by both Arenas and Nelson at will. I think they are a good offense, but if they don’t clamp down on defense they will struggle against the better offensive teams.

Ernie: So where do you see this team this year.

Kenny: It’s hard to tell from one game against a team that we expect to be bottom feeders, but I think the Magic can contend in the East if they can continue to have games like this.

Barkley: I think they are the 3rd best team behind the Heat and C’s. I don’t see them being better than that and I think they can fall if other teams improve.

Ernie: Well, the Magic had a great game and like Kenny said hopefully they can continue to have games like this. Thank you for joining us and have a great night everybody.

Stan Van and Dwight Howard enter Zo’s office he called them in for meeting.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/Zo.jpg

Zo: Welcome guys and thank you for taking time to come in and talking. I know the first game was yesterday, but I am truly excited about this team’s future.

Stan: Future, I mean no offense Alonzo but we are worried about the now.

Zo: I agree and after yesterday’s game I see the now, but also the future.

Dwight: Honestly this sounds like a meeting for you and coach, so why am I here.

Zo: Well Dwight, you are the star of the team and the most important piece. McGee struggled against you yesterday and that’s what I like to see. There is one problem though.

Dwight: Listen I busted my hump this off-season I…

Zo: No, no it wasn’t your performance. The problem is your contract. I want you to stay and after seeing what happened this last year with LeBron and everything, it does worry me that you might not stay.

Dwight: Listen my contract can’t be decided until next year so why are we worrying about it now?

Zo: Dwight you are the most dangerous big man in the NBA. We want you to keep that here. Now I am not saying you have to it’s your choice, but I want you to see how important you are by bringing you into the meetings to determine this future. LeBron, Wade, Nash, Kobe all do so it’s time for you to be brought into them.

Stan: Alright so then why are we here? We are only one game into the season.

Zo: You are right, we played really well yesterday and I saw things I liked and some stuff I didn’t like. First I think the Orlando Magic have a promising future. I am excited about what we can do this season, Arenas looked good, Bass did well, and our three young players all played well.

Dwight: I am not lying I am excited to, but I still don’t understand why I am here.

Zo: Dwight what I am about to say can’t leave this room. It could hurt the team, but again I see you as the captain and star of the team so it’s only fair that you know my goal and vision of this team.

Dwight: Okay.

Zo: I think there are only 4 untouchable players on this team. Earl Clark, Ryan Anderson, Daniel Orton, and you. Everyone else on this team does not fit my team’s long term future.

Dwight: Wait, Jameer is my boy and now you are telling me he doesn’t fit?

Zo: If he fits to you then I can work around that. He’s 28 and can play PG and SG so a 6th man position could work for him.

Dwight: It’s not that, I mean it’s your team I just want you to know that it’s kind of messed up to say 10 of the 14 players won’t be with the team.

Stan: Dwight you have to understand that this is business. I am sure if Zo could keep these guys and still think they could contribute to the long term he would. This game sees new players come and go.

Zo: Exactly! Dwight my main goal is to keep you happy and build you a team that will make Miami and other teams come in here and go “crap, we have to play them” I see maybe not this year or next year, but defiantly the third year I am here I see you at Center, Orton at power forward, Ryan Anderson at small forward, and Earl Clark at shooting guard.

Stan: I could see that, it would give us a big lineup, but do you think Earl would be a good fit at shooting guard?

Zo: Honestly I do, Earl isn’t the best shooter from deep, but his size and speed could give us an extremely edge at the position. We can work with him to improve his shooting.

Dwight: So wait, you have 4 of 5 why is Jameer not in your plans?

Zo: Because the PG isn’t on our team yet. I have been looking at different people who I think we be a good fit. Names like Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and others have come to mind.

Dwight: I think Paul and Williams would be good fits.

Zo: I thought the same, expect for the fact they are two years away from coming to this team. So I thought why not someone young, bring Dwight Howard his Penny. Then one of our scouts came to us with a name. Kyle Irving, he is a young guard from Duke and he can shoot. I think by the time Paul and Williams would come here Kyle could be an All-Star.

Stan: I like Irving. I think he could be a good player, but I would have to look at more video.

Zo: Howard?

Howard: I don’t know, Earl and Daniel haven’t been on the team for long, but I like them. Anderson is similar to Hedo, but I know nothing and Kyle.

Zo: I understand, again I know I am here to make you happy and I think you and Kyle will make one of the greatest one two punches in NBA history.

Dwight: Listen, if he can be that type of player then draft him.

Zo: Well there is the hard part, he is going to be compared to Rose coming out and he will be a top 5 pick to me.

Stan: Listen I can’t throw a season for one player.

Zo: We won’t have to. I believe if we can get Arenas back to form he was at in Washington then he could be a great piece to trade.

Dwight: So you are going to trade people to get this player?

Zo: Yes, I think Arenas and a good year from Bass could make them a valuable trade for teams in the top 5 looking to rebuild fast.

Dwight stood up and started walking to the door.

Dwight: Listen I can’t promise you anything Zo, but I can promise you I will bust my butt and watch your moves and see if you can make this team what you say you can make it.

Dwight leaves and Stan looks at Zo

Stan: You know if you fail you just caused the second coming of Shaq in the eyes of the Magic fans.

Zo: I know and you are a part of this.

Stan: how?

Zo: Well if you can’t develop those 3 players into solid starters you could help in him leaving.

Stan: That’s crap Alonzo.

Zo: I know it isn’t fair for you but Stan we are in this together. If I fail or you fail we both fail.

Stan: Listen I will try my best, but I need to be sure if I start going this way then you have my back.

Zo: I swear Stan when you leave I will be leaving with you.

Stan: Well that doesn’t sit well.

Zo: Remember this is like a marriage and I am here for you.

Stan: Alright

Stan leaves the office and heads to the court. Zo gets on the phone.

Zo: Hey, I want you all to focus on Kyle Irving. He is the only player I want and I need to know where he’s going and if he’s coming out. I need to know his everything about him.

Game Preview

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/Heat.jpg http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/Logo.jpg

The Orlando Magic go at it tonight against the Miami Heat with the winner taking an early lead in the Southeast Division. This rivalry picked up some heat this past offseason when Miami formed the big 3. Orlando proceed to take shots at the Heat and the last one being fired was the hiring of Heat legend Alonzo Mourning as the new G.M. Orlando takes its’ own new look on the road for this matchup of the southeast best.

Heats’ strength and weakness: After losing in OT to the C’s by 3 points Miami bounced back against the 76ers. Now the game against the Magic, Miami looks to continue that momentum. Miami can score and score at will, the question is can the muster enough defenses to stop Dwight Howard and his teammates. Big Z takes the honor of being the first in the line of fire of stopping Howard. After posting a combined 28 points, 9 rebounds, 13 assist, and 4 steals how will the Heats’ PG combination stop the duel of Arenas and Nelson.

Magic’s strength and weakness: Magic showed in their first game that the lesser opponents in the NBA can be handled with easy. Now they get to go up against the new and improved Heat and three guys who can score at will. J.J Redick and Jason Richardson combined to allow Nick Young to score 28 points and now they will be going up against one of the better scores in Dwayne Wade.

Keys to victory

Magic: Key will be to let Howard abuse the Heat front court and allow for people to get open on the outside. If Magic can come up with a reasonable defensive plan like the Celtics did, then the Magic can walk away with the win.

Heat: Score, score, and score some more. Heat have one thing the Magic don’t and that’s two guys who can run an offense and score at will. After seeing Richardson and Redick combo give up so many points Nick Young I don’t see Wade having much of a problem. If they can slow down Howard this could turn out to be a blowout in Miami

Game Analysis

Still not happy with the defense coming out of the SG position, but to keep Wade at 38 points on a game in 2 days in a row I can accept. We ran a different defense at times letting Howard cover James, it worked when Howard did it by causing James to go 6 of 18 to where Hedo let him go 6 of 6. Eddie house scored his 5000 career point so congrats. Overall this was a close game until the final four minutes of the 4th quarter when J-Rich hit three straight 3's to give us a solid lead and we finished them off. It is always good to get a win on the road specially in Miami.

Players of the Game

J-Rich was on fire tonight with 33 points and 9 rebounds. Shooting 14-18 and 5-6 from deep doesn't hurt either.

Wade was on fire from the opening tipoff. 38 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists while shooting 15-30 from the field.

They came, they saw, they weren’t impressed.

Story by: Tracy Jordan

The Orlando Magic went into the American Airlines Arena and came away unimpressed with what they saw. “They were good and LeBron and Wade carried them, but if that is the best they have to offer then they won’t be much of a challenge” vocal leader Dwight Howard stated after a 32 point outing. Dwight might have gotten a little caught up in the rivalry matchup and while the Magic did hold a commanding lead going into the fourth quarter, the Heat managed to mount a comeback to within 2 points with 4 minutes left in the 4th.

Magic didn’t start strong in the first quarter, but in the second things started to click again. Jason Richardson went scoreless in the first while D-Wade scored 15 in the first. Jason Richardson then went on to score 20 in the second and give the Magic a nice size lead. Dwight Howard on the other hand found himself at a new defensive position when Stan Van Gundy told him before the game that he was covering LeBron James when they were both on the floor. “I told him that Hedo wasn’t the guy I wanted covering him and when he asked me then who I told him you.” Coach Gundy told reporters. “It was different, but as a player who wants to win I was fine with it. I am the best defensive player on my team and he is the best scorer in the league so to me it made sense.” Howard started off slow against LeBron and then picked up on LeBron quick. “You I think it was different for both of us. Dwight is a Center and I am a Small Forward so when I saw him in my face when I first got the ball I was like what? He came to play though and seemed comfortable defending me. I blew past him the first couple times, but then he started using all that power he had and I couldn’t do much to beat him”

While the Magic defense confused the Heat offense, the Magic offense couldn’t be stopped by the Miami Heat. “Ya you know they went in with a plan and attacked us for 48 minutes. We started off well and we built some momentum, but then they turned on the jets and it was rather impressive. We will go back and look at the tapes and see where we messed up and were we need to improve when we face each other again.” When asked what he thought about LeBron being covered by Howard Erik simple said that there is always a way around things.

Now with the first game of the new Heat/Magic rivalry and the NBA a buzz about the potential of these two teams facing more this season both teams said they are ready to fix any and all problems they have. The Heat fired the first shot in the offseason and the Magic fired the second and third with criticizing the signings and hiring of Alonzo Mourning then last night they defiantly won the first battle of the war.

So after actually playing this game for awhile I can honestly say that it is kind of annoying. The way any power forward/center can hit a fade away at any moment. The fact that silly fouls get called on me, but when the other team does the same thing they don't get called. The annoying alleyoops where I can't do them or the get clipped by the other team, but they can perform them at will. It doesn't matter what I do on defense I still can't stop them from scoring 100 points. Lastly, I hate how I drive to the rim and all of a sudden they're all right by it to stop me, but when they drive not a single on of my guys is around.

Transaction News

The Orlando Magic made a move today November 2nd for Clippers Craig Smith. The Magic trade Malik Allen and Chris Duhon for Craig Smith and Clippers 2011 2nd round pick.

Chris Duhon voiced his displeasure with playing time after the Heat game. Alonzo Mourning granted Duhon's trade and sources inside his office it didn't effect him at all. Duhon was an Otis Smith signing and see as expandable in Zo's eyes. The eye to this trade was the 2nd round pick as many believe Zo wants to build around Howard the right way through the draft. Clippers are not expected to have a great year this year so this could be a high 2nd round pick.

Game Analysis:
Again we started slowly with just 21 points in the 1st quarter. J.J. Redick came in to start the 2nd quarter and off he went and the offense. I am still worried about the teams offense even though we faced a pretty good offensive trio. We have to work in getting Howard more touches in the paint though.

Players of the Game:

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/jjredick.png
J.J. Redick: Even though Arenas popped out a nice double double, Redick was the spark of the Magic offense in the 2nd quarter and what got the team going. 18 points, 3 rebounds, on 7-9 shooting and 4-5 from 3 in just 13 minutes is what I hope he can continue to contribute to the team.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/Melo.png
Carmelo Anthony: Melo went off on Hedo Turkoglu for 36 points. I couldn't put Howard on him because Amar'e was on the floor as well. Melo had a great game for the Knicks. 36 points and 12 rebounds.

Game Thoughts:

Good game by the Magic tonight against a lower opponent. I liked the fact that they didn't get into the 110 point zone. They shot only 38% from the floor as a team which I am happy about. Maybe I need to slow down the offensive tempo of my team and that would allow for lower scoring games from the other side. I give up the most points in the league, but at the same time lead it in blocks and steals as well as FG%. Howard had another good game and Hedo started to show life on both ends of the floor. Earl Clark has really been pushing for more minutes and continued his great shooting tonight. If Hedo can continue to play at this level his starting job is safe, but if he slacks more and Earl continues to play the way he has I could see a change in the starting lineup.

Although his shooting touch wasn't all there tonight Arenas has been nothing less the great for the Magic since the start of the season. Many questioned what Gilbert had left after he was traded, but so far he is showing people he is still that guy. 17 assist tonight mark a career high for the one time point over assist guy Arenas has showed a touch of pass since arriving.

Wesley started the game off hot which helped the Wolves stay within 7 of the Magic heading into the half. Coming out for the second though he didn't have the same shooting touch and Jason Richardson clamped down on him. Still 31 points and 13 rebounds from a rookie is nothing to be ashamed about.

Game Thoughts:

We played well once again after we got out of the first. I was very happy with how Howard dogged Lopez all night, Lopez wasn't able to get anything going against Howard and unless Orton was guarding Lopez he was pretty quiet. Overall I was happy with the performance of the team, Hedo Turkoglu is really upsetting me though, he continues to struggle and even though Earl Clark didn't get many shots he is worth more minutes.

Dwight Howard was one fire from the get go. Lopez had nothing that could stop Dwight on either end. Howard is looking like the best player overall in the NBA so far in this short season.

Even though Lopez had a better game scoring wise, Deron was on point from the field and getting his team involved on the offensive side. Still Deron is one of the best PG in the game and if the Nets want to be a contender they need more production out of him

Larry Brown resigns from the Bobcats

"You know I came here a couple years ago with a plan and motatvation for this job. The plan was going fine we made it to the playoffs, but then I lose Tyson Chandler, Gerald Wallace, and Raymond Felton. Stephen [Jackson], D.J. [Augustin], and Tyrus [Thomas] are all still solid players, but losing those other 3 really hurt the team and made me look long and hard about my future with this team. Jordan came in and asked me to give it a shot and so I did. Training Camp went well, but we came out trying to figure ourselves out and we went 0-5 and it's just not working for me. I love coaching, but I am at an age where rebuilding just isn't an option."

Larry Brown's words were harsh but true for the Hall of Fame coach. The Bobcats have gone from a team contending for the playoffs to contending for the 1st overall pick through this young season. Do the Bobcats have the pieces to contend, maybe, but only after some development and that was something Larry Brown couldn't take. What makes things worst for the Bobcats is they go into there first game without Brown against the Orlando Magic who are the NBA's best offense.

New Bobcats coach Tyrone Thorpe expressed his desire to move away from Larry Brown's system and into a more fast paced triangle offense. Tyrone has coached under other NBA coaches such as Larry Brown, Mike D'Antoni, and Phil Jackson. He was hand picked by Michael Jordan to come onto the staff much to the disapproval of Larry. Michael has cut cost recently in order to make the team more profitable while they rebuild. It is a same to see a great like Larry Brown go out this way, but like always he left, because he wanted to leave.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/McCants.jpg

Rashad McCants who is better known for who he has dated and being a bust is probably getting one last chance. McCants today inked a 1 year 1.76 Million dollar contract with the Orlando Magic who were looking for depth after trading Malik Allen and Chris Duhon. McCants has had a hard time being effective in the NBA and after an offseason were he skipped the Cav's summer league McCants seemed done with the NBA. Now McCants will fill a role with the Magic who more than likely signed him for his 3pt ability and possible upside. McCants is expected to be dressed tonight for the Magic as the go to Charlotte and face the winless Bobcats.

Game Thoughts

Disappointed to say the least. Dwight Howard couldn't get shots, but his defense was still there. This teams problem is outside of Dwight no one knows how to get to the line and drive to the hoop. Gilbert did wonderful tonight and showed he can still score as well. I went with a different lineup today that saw Richardson start at SF and Gilbert at SG with Jameer at PG. Gilbert got schooled by Stephen, but that is nothing new for my SG players. Bad thing is Earl Clark didn't see playing time because of it and Hedo still looked bad. Do I risk bad offense with sub-par defense from Hedo so Earl can continue to get into the game?

Players of the Game

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/SJackson.png

Stephen Jackson lit the Magic up for 37 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assist. He continued to show he can be a teams leading scorer, but he will need more help if they want to win more games. He wont get ever game against a Gilbert Arenas type.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm197/GatorBait19_2008/GilbertArenas.png

Gilbert Arenas had a solid game on the offensive side of the ball, but Stan Van said after the game that they need to work on his defense more. Still 36 points, 8 assist, and 5 rebounds doesn't look bad.

me either, funny thing was I was thinking about upping some of the tuning so help the gameplay.

I shot really high and score a lot, which to me, takes away from the fun factor of people reading. It's like oh he had another 130 point game and won by 20. After this lost though I figure I need to tweak a bunch of areas, you will probably still see a bunch of 120 plus games, but that's because I avg like 9 seconds a poss.

This loss also really upset me. You might see a bunch of changes to my roster, one for the fact that I really do want Kyle Irving and two I hate Hedo.

ESPN Round Table

Host
Good Afternoon and welcome to ESPN Round Table, where we take today’s hot topics and break them down for you the viewer. With me today we have Jalen Rose, Marc Stein, and Stephen A. Smith to help us with what is going on around the NBA.

(The host welcomes the guest and they get on with the show)

Host
Now the big story in the NBA right now is the hot start for the Orlando Magic, but last night we saw it stall a little with a loss to the then winless Charlotte Bobcats. Orlando had been on fire from the start of the season even after all the trades and roster moves made this offseason. Was the hot start just because people weren’t ready for them and now have caught on or was last night just a hiccup for the Orlando Magic… Jalen?

Rose
I honestly believe last night was just a hiccup for them, I have watched this team awfully close because of all the roster moves after making it to the Eastern Conference Finals and honestly one thing I notice that is different about this team that it didn’t have last year is chemistry. It all starts with Dwight Howard, their captain, and star player. After the Gilbert trade and the other trades, he held personal workouts with the team and ran through plays and 5 on 5’s to get this team use to each other and the different playing styles they have. Then it comes to the co-captain Jameer Nelson who went to Stan Van’s office after the final preseason game and told Stan to start Gilbert over him. I for one questioned this decision because of the experience Howard and Nelson have together, but if you look at tapes of the team through 6 games I see more flow on the offensive side when Gilbert and Howard play then when Nelson and Howard play. It still takes a lot for someone who is the starting PG to say hey we could win more with him playing more than me.

Host
That brings up another thing, have we seen the rebirth of Gilbert Arenas… Marc?

Stein
I can’t be sure yet to tell the truth, I mean if he keeps putting up the numbers that he has and lets the offense fall into place the way he has then I think this team can go far, but Gilbert was the man in Washington and now he is 2nd and sometimes 3rd fiddle in Orlando.

Smith
Yeah, but Gilbert didn’t have a scorer alongside him like the Magic do with Howard; he didn’t have shooters around him that showed off his passing skills like the Magic do. I talked to Arenas not too long ago where he told me he is pushing himself harder then he has before in his career. He told me he knows he isn’t as explosive as he once was and tries to hold off being the take shots guy until he is needed. If you look at his game now he is a lot more patient then he has been in the past and the reason he is shooting better is because of smarter shot selection and a better understanding of being a pass first PG instead of dribble and shot.

Rose
What I like about Arenas right now is he is being a team player, Nelson said in a recent interview that he is usually the first or second player in and last player out. He studies game film anytime he can and works on areas that he needs to improve on. What we are seeing from Arenas right now is what Washington was hoping to see from him when they resigned him to that monster contract and he just didn’t put the work in to get where they wanted.

Host
So what changed?

Rose
Honestly, Jameer, Howard, and Van Gundy. In Washington he didn’t have that strong coach that was going to push him even if he pushed back. He was the star in Washington to where in Orlando he is the second guy or even third. People joke around about Howard’s attitude sometimes, but the guy pushes everyone to do better. Also in Washington it was never I might lose my job, in Orlando you have Jameer who at anytime can replace him.

Stein
I think it could be Gilbert saying, hey I can still play and he might be doing this more towards looking at the 2013 to 2014 free agency and looking at getting one last big contract. This is also his best chance at winning a title.

Smith
I look at it more of a Michael Vick situation. He got suspended, someone was drafted to replace him and it put a fire under him. Gilbert isn’t setting career highs in points per game, but look at some of the other areas he has improved on. He has dropped his turnovers per game, his smarter shot selection as lead to an increase in field goal percentage, he’s shooting three much better, and his defense has improved a lot. I think this is a common case of I am talented I know I am, now it’s time to put the work in to make myself even better overall. Right now its working and the Magic are looking brilliant for trading for him.

Host
Now not all the Magic’s moves have panned out. Hedo still isn’t showing us much and it was evident last night when Gilbert got in his face last night about poor shot selection.

Stein
The Magic looked smarter than any team two years ago by not biting and resigning him to the gawdy contract, then they messed up by retrading for him. Stan said last night he is going to look at some stuff and see if Hedo is still the man he once was.

Rose
Here is what I have seen; vs Bobcats -4, vs Nets -1, vs T’Wolves 21 but he had a good shooting night, vs Knicks 8. Those are his plus/minus rating and I’m not impressed. The game he is in positive it’s because the rest of the team is shooting lights out, when they aren’t Hedo is a cancer on the floor. His attitude problems came with him from the Raptors and even Dwight Howard mentioned how he was upset Earl Clark wasn’t given playing time last night. They have two small forwards they really like in Ryan Anderson and Earl Clark so Hedo needs to fix something. We saw last night he is on a short rope, he didn’t start and when he did play, they didn’t pass it his way much.

Host
Do they stick with this lineup of Arenas and Nelson on the floor at the same time?

Smith
No, we saw last night the flaws in it and I think it was Stan just trying something against a lesser opponent that didn’t pan out for them. They need to figure out what they are doing at SF because to me that is their biggest weakness. Jason Richardson has been swell so far, but you don’t want him being your second leading scorer. A couple years ago sure, but now your 4 or 5 option and with the shooters on this team that’s where he would fit best. Let him sit in the corner and take 3’s all day, let him drive and dunk on fast breaks, but you don’t always want to have him as your go to guy. When he is hot, sure let it go, but basic everyday things you need him playing his role.

Host
So who is this team's go to guy?

Smith
The guy who leads them in scoring now, Howard, he is their man. It should be Howard, Arenas, Nelson, J-Rich, Hedo if he can get it going, Bass, Redick, then whoever. This team has a lot of matchup problems. They can go huge with Hedo playing PG, Earl Clark at SG, Ryan Anderson at SF, Bass at PF, and Howard at C. We have seen them do this rotation 4 times this year and it has lead to matchup problems that teams can’t handle.

Rose
Well when you have a 6’10 guy playing PG it’d be tough even for the best to defend.

Host
So what do you guys see from this team?

Rose
Well if Arenas and Nelson stay healthy and continue to support each other the way they have I can see this team doing a lot. It all comes to though when do they implode?

Stein
I think it depends if they can continue to play offense at this record setting pace. They will eventually figure out the SF position and I could see them and the Lakers going at it again with similar results

Smith
I like them; I think they win it all. I think this team is putting the egos aside and playing for one common goal. No one is in line for a pay raise this offseason outside of a couple role players so these guys are all pretty much focused on winning a title.

Host
Alright, well that raps it up for this topic, when we come back which player has impressed the panel so far this season.

You hate Hedo too, huh? Yeah, some games you just can't score with him, it's crazy.

I just came off doing a season with the Magic myself, I had Carter and Turkolu playing together this time. This is an interesting diary, keep it up my man.

just to give an update I will probably try to do 3 weeks in one day tomorrow. I have been extremely busy with work. I am in the month of Feb in the game and a hint outside of Dwight Howard, Gilbert Arenas, Earl Clark, Jake Robinson, McCants, Ryan Anderson...... everyone else has been moved.

"Struggles Continue"'

After coming off the rough outing against the former winless Bobcats, the Magic played host the the hot Atlanta Hawks. The Magic Struggle for three quarters against the Hawks until the 4th when role player Earl Clark came on and scored 8 points in 3 minutes. "Ya, Earl came in and he slowed down Joe Johnson for us in the 4th and he helped put points on the board for us. He is slowly starting to show us that he wants more playing time." Magic coach Stan Van Gundy. The question how ever becomes, who does he take time away from? The struggling Hedo Turkoglu could be an option, one game after being replaced in the starting lineup by Jameer Nelson, Hedo was back and performed poorly shooting 3-10 from the field and 1-6 from distances. What kept the Magic in this game however was their ability to not allow easy shots and disrupt Hawk shooters all night. Jamal had a great night shooting from distance, but struggled from inside the line. This was just the first meeting between the two teams and the Hawks still look like the team last year in the playoffs who couldn't get past the Magic.

At 6-1, the Magic Still Have Questions

Story By: Liz Lemon

The Magic beat the Atlanta Hawks last night in a game where their flaws were just as evident as it was against the Charlotte Bobcats. Stan Van notices this, Dwight Howard notice this, and the fans could see this. The questions have now started to pop up around the league of what the Orlando Magic can do to fix these issues.

1) Is it time to already start looking at the future at the Small Forward position? Outside of their first game, Hedo just hasn’t earned any of that 10 million per year. He takes bad shots, turns the ball over, and his defense hasn’t been close to what it was. Hedo will make another 10 million per season for the next 4 years and he is starting to look like Lewis when he plays. Earl Clark on the other hand has 4 of 6 games in which he scored over 10 points. His defense has been much better than Hedo and is younger than Hedo. Problem is Hedo again is way too expensive and there is probably little chance he’d be happy with a backup role and little to no chance someone would trade for him.

2) What is their offense? The 1 in 4 out offense is dead in Orlando, they look more traditional now than they ever have before under Van Gundy. The big issue is Gilbert Arenas right now, is he a PG who passes and makes shots from time to time, or is he what he was back in Washington. He has limited his number of bad shots and has improved, but if you want Howard to be that guy, then Gilbert needs to take a backseat to him.

3) Who do you see as future Magicians? Dwight Howard as of right now is the only one who seems to be a lock to stay on this team. Earl Clark, Ryan Anderson, Daniel Orton, and Jameer Nelson also are in that talk. The big question is what about the others. Gilbert Arenas has played well so far through the first 7 games, but how long can he withstand that. Brandon Bass has looked good as well, but with Ryan Anderson how long will the Magic stay away from the 4 out, 1 in offense. Jason Richardson is a bridge, but for who? J.J. Redick, Rashad McCants…. That is the question the Magic need to find out.

The Magic have played well so far this season, but the Heat, Hawks, and Lakers all look dangerous still as well. For the Magic it is time to sit down and figure out all these questions and now. Alonzo Mourning has done well putting this team together to this point, but great GM’s come in with plans, not just the ability to get better players.
