View Full Version : Overpowered Characters

We can all probably point to one or two overpowered characters in comics. Characters who eat entire planets, have every power under the sun, or can use their mind powers to turn you into a piece of toast at will. Characters who should really be impossible to ever beat if it wasn't for the magic of comic book logic and an eleventh hour solution to everyone's impending doom.
The default game could easily sidestep the issue by not having any of these potentially game-breaking denizens, but I am curious if CBH will acknowledge the existence of these sorts of characters, and if so, how would it address them being in the game?
Would they take on some kind of uber-villain role whereby they are rarely ever in direct battle and control things from behind the scenes (in TEW terms a Personality mixed with an Ocassional Wrestler role)? Perhaps you would need specific items or meet certain requirements to be able to defeat them? Could they be employed via some kind of evolved narratives system?
What's other people's take on the subject?

I agree, this is a really interesting question isn't it? As a gameplay mechanic, I can't think of how you can include it (thus why I'm not a game maker I suppose), but it would be slightly a drag if there weren't some sort of mega-villian that could destroy the world.
In fact, I almost imagine there would have to be, for if for no other reason then when you become the biggest super hero in the world, what else are you to face but impending doom? :p

Hopefully, there will be many super-heroes (and villains) with amazing powers and very specific weaknesses. Like, for example, a guy able to poison everything he touches and explode with anyone he poisoned, but losing consciouness if submerged into water.
I think that would require a very robust editor, but if it worked out like that, it would be kickass.

Yeah, considering everyone has a special power so to say, it's fair to think hopefully that everyone (ish, as we all know there are only so many different type of powers) has there pro's and con's. I meen, whats a super hero or villian without their literal kryptonite.
If there is no brooding winged man I riot! :p

I have seen it many times over the years in comics. Look at Marvel for 1 when Prof.X and Magneto merged into that 1 uber super Villon. It took the whole friggin marvel universe to take him on and even then it was as you say an 11th hour miracle to save the day. Dc comics World War 3 series.Again the whole universe was involved.
It would be fun if you could do that for this game. Can it be done. Only the master magician Adam Ryland can answer that 1.
Even if not im still gonna have fun up the ying yang with this game.:)

As long as there's not a CBH-verse version of Cable, there should be no problems.

And the interesting thing would be that if there were no such characters in the default game, where would that leave modders? I'm not saying that that in itself is a compelling reason to include them (I'm sure we would easily be able to create work-arounds for including someone like Galactus in the game), but it certainly would be a massive plus if we could include them in a way that was *cough* "realistic" and made sense.

To be honest, I think it all depends on how massive the game area is... Will it be one world with a moon (perhaps no moon in play)? Will it be many worlds that perhaps are uninhabited untill a modder gets their hands on it? Will it be a universe full of many different scenarios or possibilities?
Just bassically depends on how big the game world is, what can or cannot be included. IF it's all happening on an earth type world, a "Galactus" type probably shouldn't even be thought of, since he doesn't reside there.
I'm betting the game is going to be alot smaller to start with... Perhaps a few neighborhoods you can start in, and work your way up from there, to be "The Greatest Cape".
Although I would love their to be options for more... even if the default is only one world, would love to be able to inhabit a whole universe of anything I wanted... From Star Wars types to Star Trek, to Master's of the Universe, or every Green Lantern Sector.... For Galactus, I would probably just put him a good many years away from the starting gameworld and have him send out his herald(s) to find other worlds. As the game evolves, they will get closer and closer to Earth.

In the world of mmo's like say champions and city of hero's there are mega villians and even monsters(the giant octopus in the bay) that requires teams of hero's and sometimes villains also working together to beat it.
Can this be done it this type of game, possible. I for 1 would love to see it in the game.
I remember the Godzilla mini series comic were the final issue Godzilla came to San Fran and it took both the avengers and defenders together to drive him away from the city.
Now that would be awesome if we could have something like that in this game.

Or X-Man.

I would like for their to be insanely overpowered villains (and even heroes) in the game, as that's practically expected in comics anymore. Though there's no need to go crazy. We don't necessarily need a Galactus-level being in the game, but maybe Phoenix-level would work. (Well, Phoenix as she was during the original Phoenix saga. I don't follow comics too closely anymore, so they could have boosted the Phoenix force power level recently and I'd be unaware.)
Though I also may not necessarily object to a Living Tribunal-esque entity so long as he doesn't interfere with the game world much. In other words, I'd be okay with knowing of his existence but not really seeing him much, knowing if I let something in the game world gets hideously out of balance, he's going to show up and decimate everything to bring it back in balance. Gives you incentive to work harder!

Yeah, if you look at the big two they both have a scale.
Street level (Punisher/ Batman), to super powered (Spiderman/ Wolverine) over powered (Superman/ Thor), and then the cosmic level (Darkseid/ Galactus)
You'll note that, with a few exceptions (like Batman) villains and heroes will operate with each other only if they are on the same level or one level above or below them or its some big event type narrative.

So it's like a push level? :P
And Galactus is like Andre the Giant in the Royal Rumble where everyone has to work together to get him over the top rope.

The problem is that some characters become so popular that they go above street level like Batman(famously hanging with the Justice League and taking blasts from Dark Seid) and Wolverine(famously beating Lobo when he's just a dude with claws who can't die).
Maybe there could be a Batman rule where if you get popular enough you get implicit super powers.

Just a FYI... Batman is Dick Grayson now. Bruce Wayne is presumed dead... of course there is always that little pit he can take a bath in to fully recover him, don't think it has happened though.
