View Full Version : The Character Name Suggestion Thread

I've created this thread so that people can post their own creative suggestions for super hero \ super villain character names for the game. Please read the three important notes below before posting!

- Please, please, please bear in mind that the point of this thread is to post creative and interesting ideas, not to show off how many names you can come up with or to post the obvious basics. By this I mean that posts that read "Amazing Man, Brilliant Man, Fantastic Man, ..." are really unnecessary, as there's nothing creative about being able to read a thesaurus!

- Please be aware that by posting your ideas in this thread you are giving me permission to use them in the game in whatever way I see fit.

- Please do not post names that are taken from existing comic books OR from pro wrestling.

Man it's going to be tough finding names that haven't already been copyrighted by one of the comic publishers... Guess that'll mean we'll have to get really creative :D

My contributions:

Propinquity - I've been in love with this word for a while. Definition: "Propinquity can mean physical proximity, a kinship between people, or a similarity in nature between things ("like-attracts-like")." My thoughts are that it would be good for a hero or villain whose power is stronger the closer they are to someone. That may be irrelevant, but figured I should explain it anyhow.

Blazing Morality

Asdfg -name for a technologically related character

The Tourniquet

Dead Economy

Untitled Man

lasreveR - read it in reverse :)

Qwerty - Some kind of keyboard/computer-inspired hero.
Toxic Loan - Banker by day... Dollar-sign coated bringer of sludge by night!
Ovisian Horn - Sheep-man!
The Glamorgan Gunman - What if The Punisher... were from South Wales?
Biafra - Rise up, Sir Igbo!

Did these on the spot, which explains the patchiness in quality :p

(I don't know much about comics so apologies if I use something which is already copyrighted, plus I'm not particularly good with names)

The Flea (The most irritarting of all villains, incredibly difficult to get rid of but unable to cause any real harm)

Twister (Flexible, strange villain)

Empátheia (Character able to manipulate the emotions of others perhaps?)

Aboulia (A lack of will power or decicivness, perhaps the worst superhero ever?)

A shortened version of the word Agathokakological (contains both good and evil)

A couple of idea's, hopefully much more creative people jump in here then me

Robert J. Oppenheimer - Evil scientist with a heart of poetic gold?

Tsar Bomba - Trinity is already in comics, so I'm guessing the other most well known test ought to be used somewhere if needed for an uber-powerful baddie.

Ivy Mike - Well, poison ivy with with a twist? Also an ode to Atomic testings of the past.

Roid Rager - Too obvious?

Scratch Addict/Ticket Head - As a post-convience store clerk, there is nothing more evil then a Scratch ticket head that won't go away.

Wishbone - Alright, you know, this is just for me. To see my childhood hero (a talking dog..) , even in name, as a superhero would be awesome.

Sophie (You know the one)- Obviously needs to be either a love interest or at least an assistant of some sort.

Soiled Green - My guess that this would be people.. I meen, a person.

From my City of Heroes account:

Arsenique - female assassin/ninja, dualwields swords.

Pogrom - ex-USSR villain with super strength and near-invulnerability, strongman for Russian mafia.

Sanctum - otherworldly being seeking to uphold balance between good and evil. Energy blasts, manipulates energy to shield his allies from harm.

Sea Urchin Man - was stung by a radioactive sea urchin, now has the strength, speed and stamina of a sea urchin. Shoots pointy spines from his body, hurts to pick up.

Torpedo - superpowered hitman with uncanny accuracy. Think Bullseye or Golgo 13.

Stainless - cop/soldier hurt in the line of duty, brought back as cyborg dispenser of justice. Think Robocop/Deathlok.

Ringmaster/Infernal Ringmaster - a circus ringmaster - with the twist that instead of horses, elephants and tigers, his Cirque Infernale contains demons, freaks and mutants instead, which he uses to carry out nefarious schemes. A warlock and demonologist, his body is heavily scarred from years of taming abyssal beasts.

Negagirl - once a worthless junkie, she was abducted off the streets to serve (again) as a lab rat for illicit scientific experiments, giving her command over negative energy and dark matter. Summons miniature black holes, blasts foes with rays of nothing.

Diva of Death/Falsetta - Once lauded as one of the greatest young opera singers of her generation, Giovanna Falsetta was blissfully unaware that her impressive range was due to latent mutant abilities rather than innate talent. This fact became painfully obvious to all during a production of Rigoletto at the City Opera House, when Giovanna's mutant abilities mysteriously activated, causing her to completely lose control of her sonic powers. The resulting soundwaves killed thirty and maimed over a hundred patrons. Robbed of a promising opera career and wanted by the authorities, the disgraced young mutant fled into the shadows, seeking the company of mutants and outcasts like herself, taking on the name Diva of Death and embarking on a career as a super-powered criminal.

Fist of Terror - criminal ****/fascist mastermind and terrorist with an army of idiotic henchmen. Aims for world domination.

Timekiller - time traveling assassin. Wanted for questioning for his alleged involvement in the assassinations of JFK, Lincoln, Julius Caesar and Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Hurricane Rita - controls the power of storms, shoots lightning bolts.

Penitentiary Steel - ex-convict subjected to illegal experimentation granting him steel skin and super strength. Often referred to by mid 90ies rappers.

Polar Peril - ice powers

Asylum - former psychiatrist turned insane due to lack of control over psychic powers, radiates field of insanity around him. Motives make no sense, dangerous as hell.

Compost - gardener who fell into his own compost heap after treating it with a special mixture designed to make aid decomposition, gained powers over plants as a result.

Saint of Assassins - a lowly Egyptian thief who was possessed by the spirit of Hassan I-Sabah, leader of the ancient sect of assassins, after stealing a locket containing his soul from a magician. Ruthless, enigmatic, deadly.

Noble Savage - Native-American medicine man/spirit warrior. Summons ancestral spirits and totems to aid in fights.

Rasta Blasta - Jamaican mutant with explosive powers. Irresponsible, irrepresible and optimistic, one of the good guys.

Newsflash - a star reporter who is always first with the big news stories due to his secret identity as Newsflash, a crimebuster who uses his insane speed and electric powers to fight gangstars.

Captain Maximum - suave, handsome, charismatic, completely self-centered, fights crime for the sake of ego gratification. Thinks of self as God's gift to superherodom and the opposite sex, others think of him as a glory hound and superjerk.

The Great Gazpacho - stage magician with actual magic skills. Relies on illusions and trickery.

Crimson Wasp

Black Mona

I'm never great with names, but here's one I came up with based on one of the renders I did (the fat guy with the hat).

Senator R. Ernest Goodman (R-TX)
Basically an ultra-popular pro-corporation Senator and villain. I'm actually quite proud of the name...

Bollywood Bulk BoganHalf Indian/Half Australian Bollywood actor/wrestler by day, vigilante by night.
Dr. Googly (Scientist/cricket fanatic who has developed a range of high tech cricket balls for various crime fighting or evil purposes)
Crime Man (A superhero who is friendly, noble, polite and jovial but mostly uses his powers to commit crimes having misinterpreted that there is a difference between heros and villains in comic books and combined attributes of each)

When it comes to Super Heroes, I'm a fan of basic names that give a quick message and are recognizable, although unoriginal (so I'm sure everyone thought of these before):

-Hope
-Midnight Lad
-Shade
-Obsidian
-Excalibur
-Nuclear Machine
-The Eagle

When it comes to Villains, they have to be a little more complex:

-Vladimir Nevsky
-Aleksei Cyrus

And that's all I've got, derp

Vince Virtuous - Either a smug hero or a villain who acts like a good guy in public
The Guns - A man with massive arms (which he loves so much that his name is based off of them)
The Sociopastor - Sociopath mixed with some evangelical wrath
SRS Business - Ah, internet references...
That Guy - Character actor who everyone has seen but can't place the name of by day, superhero by night
Massacarate - or Massakarate if you prefer that spelling
Wrong Turn
Event Horizon - Not just a questionable movie
Ohm - Hard to believe it's not copyrighted, but can't find anything yet
The Quantum Mechanic

I'm sooo gonna have to spend some time thinking of good names, but for now I'll leave with some terrible ones based off the keyboard in front of me. :p

Captain Lock - Probably a leading hero type (bonuses for his sidekicks Scroll and Number)
Shift - Guy with super-speed or teleporting ability
Control - Perhaps a psychic who can use his powers to do stuff, could be a villain or a hero
Delete - Almost certainly a killer/assassin of some sort, I can see this person being pretty cool

And lastly...

The Eskimole - a world's reknowned Inuit Spy capable of all kinds of subterfuge, espionage and costumes. :)

Random Word Generator + the word "man" =

Please avoid just using a random word generator - as from the initial post, I'm looking for creative and interesting ideas rather than stuff I can do via a book \ website without much effort.

Juggerslaught: A project of the German government during the 1930s, he is an unstoppable, uncontrollable killing machine. He has a kill counter that maxes at 50,000 at which point he explodes taking out everything in sight. (villain)

The Human Killotine: A former circus performer from the 1950s who cheated death several times. He specialized in a guillotine act as well as a spinning wheel act of the same name. He was released from the circus when his guillotine killed an audience member. Since then, he has been collecting heads until his thirst for killing is quenched. (villain)

Atomic Samurai: A survivor of the Hiroshima strike of the summer 1945. He is a master of kendo and judo who was training in "mystic burial grounds" when the bomb dropped. The spirits protected him from possible death, but he gained strange powers from the fallout. He became a national hero similar in stature of Marvel's Captain America.

Ripping Jack: A British villain from the 60s Mod culture. Very stylish...and unstable.

The Leaping Man of Leeds: An annoying C-level villain from Leeds. His only ability is the ability to jump really high and over great distances. Once in awhile he's successful in his crimes. He appears at the most random of times. So annoying.

Lobo Mexicano: Former Mexican bank robber from the wild west known as "The Wolf". He became a hero during the Spanish-American war. Has no actual powers, but is skilled a gunslinging and brawling.

Powder Keg: A stocky villain capable of exploding himself and regenerating himself as long as there is gunpowder nearby. Usually leaving him in critical condition until he heals. Can also cause minor explosions.

Explosivo: Hip, c**ky, and flashy up-and-coming Mexican hero. He's caliente! He's EXPLOSIVOOOOOO!!!

Kaizer von Catfish: An evil, Austrian catfish who resides in a tank in the torso of a steampunk robotic body.

The Alpha Norwegian: Bam Bam Johansson turned superhero, see the heromachine prototype image in the render thread and background info in the wish list thread.

Hellspar: Simple thug turned superhero, now blessed with the twin geological mights of heat and earth! As in, you know, rocks and fire...
Santa Annadroid: A ruthless, robotic Mexican dictator, made of the finest of Mexican engineering.

San Antonio: Heroic rival of the evil Santa Annadroid, he's a lone rider style cowboy, silent, chivalrous, and statuesque, with a big iron on his hip. Also, he's a giant ant.

Annihigator: Now an ally of Kaizer von Catfish, Robert Thibodeaux was once a simple mercenary for hire down in the swamps of Louisiana... until the Kaizer's evil plans went horribly right in the name of wrong, turning him into a monstrous Alligator man!

Wooly Rhino: A mountain of a man, the incredibly hairy Wooly Rhino may look like a giant, semi-blubbery barbarian, but by god he fights for truth, justice, and the Siberian way!

Sergeant USA: He's been fightin' Communism since before that wussy Carter was in office, and somehow rather than age he just gets more grizzled and more prepared to put a boot in the ass of the enemies of America in the name of America. The living embodiement of the American Dream... with guns. Really, really, really big guns. And lots of them.

The Emole: Curtis Smith was always picked on at school for being "an individual", persecuted for his skinny jeans, eye obscuring haircut, and love of poetry-over-conflict. But, has fate would have it, the meek would inherit the earth: or at least learn to burrow underneath it. While rehearsing the song "My Heart Bleeds In The Night" with his band "The Crying Vampires", a freak electrical storm imbued him with the powers of the world's most depressing creature: the mole. Now, crime fears his battle cry (which literally sounds like crying) of "I'm so down, I'm underground!", as he slowly digs the graves of justice!

Negative Zero: Wendy Adderson was always the nerdy type, focusing on math while other girls were off trying to catch the eyes of football players or get their daddies to buy them a new car. That was, of course, until she boldly tried to use a negative zero in a chemistry equation! The young lady emerged from the deady mustard gas with a blast of SUPER ENERGY BEAMS, and controll over the very KINETIC ENERGY which surrounds her body!!!

Midnight Rebel: Billy Idol, only evil.

Aquilifer: One of the oldest known superheroes, the man known simply as the Aquilifer can have his history traced back to the time of the Roman Empire. Little is known of the man who would become one of the planet's greatest, and most enigmatic, heroes, save that he once served in Roman army under Caesar. How he became the man he is today, however, is shrowded in mystery and speculation: some say he was chosen by Caesar to be blessed with magics, others that he was cursed with immortality by angered Germanic tribes, and even some claim his powers come from the ancient Roman pantheon of gods themselves. Whichever the case, the result is the same: inhuman strength, seemingly invincible, flight at speeds unseen by all but modern aircraft... the most well known of the "eagle bearer's" abilities.

I've got several dozen more of these, but I've gotta get going. That, and it's hard to think with whatever in the HELL is that noise the person on the floor above me is making.

"The Pin King" Ty Greer: A steelworker by day and the undisputed king of the city's bowling leagues by night in the mid 80's, Ty Greer was known for his great comb-over and an uncanny ability to drink all night and still maintain a 242 average. However, in 1988, after costing his team the city bowling championship by getting completely hammered and bowling an 86, he angrily opened a sewer cover and dropped his trusty ball "Black Thunder" into the murky depths below, vowing never to bowl again.

One can only guess as to the strange substance it came into contact with in the sewer, but the next night Black Thunder came back to him, hovering in the air and glowing with a fluorescent yellow eminence. The Pin King found that he could control the ball with his mind, that it was now nearly indestructible, and that it could travel as fast as a bullet fired from a gun. Though he was a dangerous man, Greer's lack of ingenuity led him to a life of low-level crimes, primarily using his bowling ball as a means of breaking into local businesses and making off with whatever money was in their safe.

However, one night when he got ambitious and elected to rob a bank, a local superhero appeared on the scene to put an end to his misdeeds. Black Thunder took matters into its own hands, sending 16 pounds of death through the unfortunate hero's chest. This violent crime drew notice from a local Supervillian syndicate, who tracked Greer down and made him a low-level member of their group. He is now a soldier in their ranks, and is known for using his ball as a weapon in combat.

Sorry I got a little long-winded there, just having fun with the concept. :D

Also, a LOT of my ideas come from ideas I had way back in my City of Heroes days. If needed, I could always find a way to jump back in for a month to get their likeness to someplace visible. Only images I can still find of any of my characters from those days are Comradebot and the beta-version of Midnight Rebel. Yes, I really did have a villainous Billy Idol knock-off running around the Mercy Islands, and it was freakin' awesome.

I'll probably keep my main hero for myself, though, as my rookie. Then I'll just have to find a render maker kind enough to help me out... :)

But seriously, I have more ideas for heroes and villains than I'm typically proud to admit. Way too much free time.

IER has done some amazing work with names I've given him, turning them into tangible beings. I thought I'd give an idea of how I perceived the names, in case you wanted to use them as well.

Asylum - (I saw this listed earlier, thought I'd give my take) A former hero known as Monolith, beaten down by the world around him, and how society built him up, simply to knock him down. Inevitably succumbs to a psychotic break, blaming the hero Monolith for letting him down. With the various voices heard in his mind, Asylum is born, a community within one man, hellbent on the destruction of the man he used to be.

Centaurian - Half man, half horse, all hero. Dressed in traditional Roman armor, the fictional warrior battles against foes with tenacity, and amazing sword and shield work.

Blight - Hardened villain with the ability to absorb any toxin, disease, or virus into his system without being adversely affected. Also able to replicate said toxin, allowing him to become a walking biological weapon. Forced to wear a gas mask, and tank, as his body has proven unable to filter oxygen without shutting down his respiratory system.

Minion - Massive beast of a man, who moves slow, due to a lead like bonding to his bones. Hits like a speeding truck, but is essentially mute and mindless, following orders of whomever controls him.

Djinn - Saudi born magic man, whose innate ability to conjure has caused more than one to confuse him for the mythical genie.

Myste - Dangerous ninja assassin, shrouded in mystery, and who has become notorious for her ability to disappear in a cloud of smoke.

Mirage - Cloaked hero with mental abilities. Focused more on the ability to "push thoughts" such as making things appear, that aren't really there.

Psilent Knight - Armored hero who uses his mental abilities to conjure a psionic weapon and shield.

Vapor - Speedy hero, described simply as a trail of vapor, when he takes off. Formerly confined to a wheelchair, until subject to government drug testing, which not only gave him use of his legs, but enhanced his muscles to a superhuman level.

Mannequin - Former glamor model, who was hideously scarred when caught in the crossfire between a hero and villain. Now hidden behind a mask visage of a doll face, she hopes to rid the world of those who have ruined her life.

Virtue - Half man/half demon when a possession left him deformed. An effort to try to harness the demon's power to fight for right left him a twisted form of his former self. Now an eternal struggle between good and evil.

Solar - Human with the ability to flare up to intense heat. Able to burn for short periods of time as a second sun.

Armas de Fuego: Alberto Mendoza spent his whole life in Mexico, watching his family struggle through poverty... but the final straw came when Santa Annadroid unleashed his reign of terror upon the good people of Las Cabra. Donning the attire, and impressive mustache, of a Mexican Revolutionary, Mendoza became Armas de Feugo... his twin revolvers now righting wrongs one bullet at a time!

Hi Adam,

Here some other ideas (and questions too! :) )

Easy way (Golden Era Period kind)

Dragon Breath: his light green skin is partially covered by dragon scale. Standing 10’ tall he got quite good strength but his main power is dragon breathing (fire).

Musashi: he is the most famous Japanese super hero. Mushashi is Yoshiro, a teen ager nerd, with passion for Japanese Middle Age, who found the mystic Mushasi wooden sword. By this sword, during time of crisis, the spirit of the ancient samurai came back to earth, fight one more time for Japan.

A little bit modern (more psychology, troubled characters)*I create a Special CIA Agency called SPA (see above): it’s just by you Adam to use it or not of course, but I think some kind of CIA activities is needed and logic in a superhuman universe.

Secret CIA Department - SPA (Super Power Agency) Heroes

Weapon X: the CIA technical center has developed a new biotechnological exoskeleton suite (super resistance, dexterity, speed, flight, special guns and so on) based on living “entities” (some argues about space parasites-monocellular entities). It can be used by psi-power only (the exoskeleton create a kind of link with the user). The Agency found George Collins few years ago and hired him. After few time of training Collins shows perfect suite’s control (faster than SPA thoughts about) and was ready to action.
Collins is a egomaniac, self-thought, exhibitionist and trouble making guy who loves his new life as SPA agent.
Nobody knows (outside SPA) if George Collins is the only Weapon X. Collins surely hates the idea someone else can replaces him or simply can be added to him (he considers himself unique) and shows some form of paranoid about this argument (he’s starting to investigate about too)
Unknown problem: it seems the suite is not only a living material but shows a kind of self counsiousness /willingness..

Bi-dimension or Agent S (Agent Shadow): Alicia O’Grady was nothing more than the girl next door before her power comes out (she can become a shadow). Discovered by S.P.A. she’s actually “hired” (maybe someone would call this “forced to join”) by the Agency, who consider her a superb spy in the making. Her identity was deleted and she can’t have any contact with people of her past life (in a less comedy way than Men in Black movie). S.P.A is actually training her to develop her power and give her other standard spy skills (including martial arts, mouth reading, 3-4 languages, disguise, and so on). Alicia doesn’t like SPA agent life, considering this a real nightmare/prison. She would like to have a common teenager life, come back to her parents, her friends and her hobbies. Due to this unwillingness and refuse of new life, she’s always under control by SPA agents and scientists.

Border line and really controversial character

The Dreamer: in a small South Dakota coma center there’s an unknown patient. He’s there since 10 year. He’s actually under study ‘cause his dream state brain activity is the highest ever seen (someone would say it’s an unhuman activity). What the doctors can’t know is that this man is “the Dreamer”, a superpower identity of the dreamland. All the great superheroes (and villains) had something to do with him in the last 10 years (during their most shocking sleep times). Sadly nobody can really says if he can be considered an hero or a villain, because his actions seem really complex and ambiguous. He had defined himself different times as “guide” and “master of equilibrium”.

The Exorcist: Reverend Brown is a psychotic priest who considers all superpower activities as demonic (no matter if superhero or villain). He’s always looking to destroy the Devil by his “exorcism”, that usually means “possessed” death. How is possible he can win versus a super power man is easy to explain: he has his own! A Negate Power Range sometimes called “unpower”. The consequences of this unpower (all the superpower doesn’t work and can’t harm him) are considered by him the prove that God is blessing his mission.

PS
Hi Adam, I presume you don’t have already well defined which kind of universe you’ll create.

Trying to help you better, thus, I kindly ask you to let me know

1 - Bios in this post are ok for your needs? Do you like more/less details about super powers, more/less about background and personality? I mean do you need an idea more similar to Dragon Breath or Weapon X? or you simply need names, names names?
2 - As you can see Weapon X got some kind of storyline “seeds” who can be developed (the living suite personality, his paranoid to be the only one and so on). Do you need this kind of ideas is useful for your game or not?
3 – Do you think your Universe will be composed by characters more similar to Super Paladins (Superman and so on), or more troubled life (Spider man, X men) or more dark/complex personalities (Batman).
4 – Could it be nice to explain the power source? I.e. Mutant, alien, experiment, high tech, psyonic, spiritual, magical, hard training….
5 – Is it possible to suggest “second line” character (Secretaries, scientists, managers, police detectives, girlfriends, friends and so on)? Maybe we can help you to create a deeper universe too.
6- Does the world will work as MMA and TEW? I mean it would be composed by regions or it will be a unique one? Can we create local and regional heroes who operate only in their region or do you consider they would be all “working” in North America? It would be a contemporary world or it would be a ’60, ’70….?
7- Do you think it could be a good idea to create a kind of standard sheet? Here just a little idea about it.

Super Identity name:
Nature: (Hero – Villain)
Real Name:
Born date:
Look: (weight, tall, dress and so on)
Superpowers (maybe just a list – strength - dexterity)
Source: see question no. 4
Bio
Personality
Drawback

Never been a big comic book fan so if some of these are existing characters, or have already been suggested, kindly over look them.

Kobra Kahn.

Was a henchman for Skeletor in the Masters of the Universe cartoons.

Eternal Champion.

Was an old video game on I want to say the Sega Genesis. Might be usable though

Bio-Hazard.

I seem to remember a character by this name. But not being a recent comic guy, I could be wrong.

Hexx.

Existing C-Verse characters need not apply. Hexx is a luchador who teams with Decimalo.

Jinxx.

The leading lady of the Hive Academy in the animated Teen Titans. Probably comics too but only know the TV version.

Puppet Master.

Common enough gimmick it should be alright but have been characters by this name both in comics and cartoons over the years.

Razorback.

Has been a comic character but so far as I can tell he was only an obscure sidekick to Spiderman back in the 70's. So could work. I might even play this character. If he turned out anything like Marvel's version, he could be pretty cool.

Yeah, I've been trying to avoid going through doing that myself, although Weapon X nearly made me start.

Sammartino: Weapon X is the name of the program that gave Wolverine his claws in Marvel. It's also been the name of Wolvie in at least one alternate universe.

...

As a general rule, guys, if your name has X as a component, on its own, and is a pun, it probably exists.

If the name has Star in it, odds are very good it exists.

Adam: Would it actually be worth people keeping an eye out for real characters who've slipped through, or is that stepping on your toes?

Err, some random Latin words and their meanings that could work (for feminine, change the "us" for "a"):

Necatus - "having been killed"
Electus / Optatus - "having been chosen" or The Chosen One
Laudandus - "needing to be praised"
Verendus - "needing to be feared"

Just wanted to say I think all of these have potential.

And with the last one, I like the female variation. Verenda could be a great name for a villianess from the southern U.S where porches are often referred to as "verandas". Maybe give her a feminist streak. Have her be all upset that the villians who seek to spread fear tend to be male. Maybe her mission in life is to teach men what fear is on a personal level.

No, they're a far older concept, known as 'out of copyright'. That said, there are trademarks on certain mythological figures being used as superheroes - using Thor and Hercules, for example, is unwise. Others (Ares, etc) have been used by both of the Big Two sufficiently that they're comparatively safe.

So something like 'Xochiquetzal' as a female hero or even Xochi Quetzal would be kosher?

Name related question, are there going to be generic henchmen/baddies?

Because I think it would be funnier to give them pun-names or funny names rather than naming then Henchman #1 or Random Villian #7.

"The Professor" has sent his henchmen "Tiny Tim" and "Bob" to attack you.

Question, do the characters who make it into this game fall under any kind of insta-copyright protection?

I'm wondering because there are some names which haven't been used by the big publishers, but you could also easily see them becoming Marvel/DC characters in the future... at which point, could that be an issue for GDS if the characters are still open for someone else to copyright after they've been put into the game?

(I could be over thinking things, but in short, imagine if WWE decided to call The Miz "Champagne Lover" and sell a bunch of merch under the name... what spot would that put TEW in, from a legal standpoint, if WWE then cottoned on to TEW and wanted the references removed?)

Bearing in mind I don't speak Japanese, here are some names that seem to fit (and what Wiki says are their translations):

Kagemusha ("Shadow Warrior" in Japanese)
Akunin ("villain" in Japanese)
Gaijin ("non-Japanese", also a great book by James Clavell)
Kagami ("mirror", could make an interesting character IMO)
Kaijin ("supervillain", apparently a seamonster too)

Catherine America and her monkey sidekick Capuchin America
:D (that's clearly just for pun)

(originally I'd thought of TEW character Katherine Goodlooks using Katherine America as a superhero alt, but then I realized it would work better as a name by itself)

*ahem*

anyways, I'm usually awesome at coming up with hero/villain names, so I'll think of a few off the top of my head right now...

Ridge Racer - Rick Ridge, former NASCAR driver, drives fast, fights crime faster, and with product-placement galore! Yes, the name comes from the NAMCO game, and they're his main sponsor. :)
Mister Microphone - his power would be voice amplification
Framework - can analyze the structure of whatever they see and can deconstruct it at its basic structural level (either atomic or otherwise)
Mirthquake - can cause uncontrollable laughter in people
Shana the Seductress - mythological-type villainess
Boa Destructor - snake-based supervillain
Weasel-Brain - smug under-villain, heavily based off Bobby Heenan
Wavebreaker - can control the water currents
Corona - light-based
Repli-Kate - woman named Kate who can duplicate herself (a la Multiple Man); yes, this is based off the National Lampoon movie that has Ali Landry as Kate.
Helix - can restructure the very molecules of something, basically possibly as overpowered as Dr. Manhattan there, potentially unstable
Cortex - can control somebody's nervous system
Adjudicator - Judge (Dredd) analogue?
Highway - telekinetic speedster
Caballero - Mexican metamorph, morphs into a horse; alternately, a Mexican cowboy of the Ghost Rider variety
Marquis - officially-sanctioned hero working for France, his power can be whatever Adam decides
Scarab - Egyptian beetle-based Power-Armor wearing hero of the Kamen Rider variety
Mute - can nullify sound within X-sized radius (you pick how big X is)
Soprano - Banshee and Syren style powers
Cleanse - I dunno
Repel - a somewhat misleading name, Repel has the power to be completely UNAFFECTED by EVERYONE ELSE'S POWERS (basically "repelling" them). Regular-strength person otherwise. Other attributes are up to Adam and whoever else writes up the official bios.

That's all I can think of for now. The descriptions I gave are mostly suggestions for skeleton bios.

Keep in mind, I'll still probably use my list as supporting characters for my Whateley Universe fanfiction. (shrug)

I'm not one to give a final answer. But seeing that Antonio Maxi Marquez has been our Champagne Lover since at least 2005 and would therefore far predate any WWE use, justice would seem to favor us. Still there is the old Billy Budd problem that the law and justice are separate creatures. But your point could be a really good one in regards to this game. What happens if we dummy up some girl named Lexi Cography and then she shows up two months later as a Teen Titan wannabe? Would the short amount of lead time and the fact that the comic universe is so marginalized compared to what it used to be really help us?

Tiarager - I just mixed up Tiara and Tiger (sort of) and I thought that it sounded like a cool name for a heroine or villaness (sp?).

RuineDust - Yeah, don't ask me on that one. It just sounded like a cool egyptian villan.

Runty McRunts - It could be a short redneck/farmer character! :p

Gunny Golightly - A parody of Honey Golighly, could be some sort of female redneck stripper, and if this game is related to the CVerse at all, it could some how be Honey's sister. :D

And that's all that I have for right now! I can't wait for this game to be released!

Don't know about a hero. But you could be on the right track for a treasure to be at risk with the first one. Couldn't you just see some villian trying to steal the Tigress Tiara?

And if you really wanted to be topically punny maybe the Tigress Tiara could belong to actress Charlene Gloss. :)

And with the second one here, I don't know about sounding Egyptian or anything. But take out the extra I and Runedust could be a good name for a geeky wannabe villian magician. He could be seeking to use his life of crime as a means to revive the arcane magical arts. Maybe he could even be a henchman at first. Perhaps nobody takes him seriously because his stature in the underworld starts so low.

Is it really necessary to remove all names that are also in the C-Verse? So long as they aren't just versions of the C-Verse character turned into a superhero, I don't really see the problem in the odd character sharing a name with someone in TEW.

For instance, there used to be The Hurricane the wrestler and various comic book characters called Hurricane or The Hurricane. He wouldn't be the first wrestler whose name is inspired by a comic book character.

Yes. It is. Because Adam asked us to. Whether that's because he intends this game's story world to be independent of the C-Verse or whether he feels he has the likely crossovers accounted for remains to be seen

Not sure if it has been suggested, but looking into some mythical heroes would be great.

Unfortunately, I think all the good ones have been stolen already (Marvel seem to have pillaged the cool Norse ones like Odin, Thor, etc). I'm not too familiar with Norse mythology, but here's a few possibilities I found:

Forseti/Fosite (god of justice)
Njord
Mothi and Magni ("angry" and "strong")
Wayland the Smith
Sigurd
Jotun (a giant - would fit)
Jormungand (a sea serpent)

Cutlass - A curvacious, androgynous male crime fighter. Has a penchant for fancy clothing and a lax nautical theme (Marine/Pirate).

The Foil - A fallen superhero, though still upholds many of the typical "Hero" characteristics. (Secret identity that appears to be a wealthy philantropist, physically handsome and heroic looking, spandex suit, ect.)

Sir Hilton - Symblized by the large iron cross-bar he uses for defense, Sir Hilton is a strong and imposing villain who works best at defending his fellow evildoers.

Dirk - A small, sharp-witted super villain who is adept at hiding and ambushes.

A team of English villains (depending on viewpoint) called the New Empire. The want to (in order)
Get rid of the monarchy
Re-conquer the other home nations
Re-enslave the Commonwealth
Dominate the rest of the world

Dexter Cromwell
A descendant of the Cromwells who has a burning hatred of the monarchy and a xenophobic desire to return England to the world's summit. Whilst not superpowered as such Cromwell has enormous resources, influence through the world at the highest levels and access to cutting edge technology.

Cromwell's inner circle consist of representatives of his four methods to bring supremacy: financial, sporting, military and cultural

The Old Lady
The Bank of England is actually named after her. The Old Lady has a mystic ability to control people when it comes to decisions and has been using it to control markets, spending and investments to benefit the New Commonwealth. Noone is sure if she is thousands of years old or just one of a long line of Old Ladies

Lewis Duckworth
Lewis is the ultimate cricketer. He has patience, subtlety, aggression and speed and is as such a very openly militant man. He dresses in whites and wields his trademark bat and balls with several properties (explosive, sleeping gas, etc)

Brigadier Venables
A gentleman adventurer, Venables splits his time between crushing ethnic minorities, mistreating women and displaying amazing physical prowess and strategic intuition. He is a great fighter on his own in his red coat (think utility belt) and wielding a super-advanced musket but when backed up by his special forces the Brigadier is a terrifying force.

The Bard
The Bard is blessed with the ability to inspire, entertain and entrance. Through music, poetry and art he can turn opposing forces and minds to his will and stop frontal attacks in their tracks. Hes not a fighter, but is invaluable for spreading the word in the shadows

And of course the whole group are backed up by the muscle:

Both major comic book companies have characters rooted in Scandinavian and Greek Mythologie...

How about having a comparable superhero in this universe that is based on African or Asian Mythology so instead of Thor or Hercules you'd have Oya, Hadad and/or Tsi Yeu.

With this you can have a whole backcatalog of side characters which are also available through mythology.

MCPhatman - Who is basically a Luke Cage like blaxploitation character if he was made post 2000.

As far as I'm aware you can't trademark mythological characters, so the Greek and Scandinavian characters can still be used - they just can't steal the look that is used in the comics. So, there's no real need to be using obscure mythology from other cultures.

Blah, my last post didn't save properly and was deleted in an unfortunate accident. So, as I result, I'm going to post down my suggestions and then elaborate on them possibly tomorrow, but sometime this weekend.

One-Two - A regular human trained to peak fitness levels, One-Two is believed to be the infamous Jonah Carraway, a disgraced former boxer shamed away from the sport due to drug abuse and domestic issues. Now, he fights crime on the street in an effort to redeem his life and win back his old lover. His powers are limited to his natural agility and strength, though his conditioning and ability to take a punch is nearly unrivaled amongst the civilian populace.

The Traveller - An eccentric, witty, grinning woman in a thick hooded travelling cloak, The Traveller is an oddity among superheroes--She does little in the way of crime fighting. Everything about her, from name and age to origin, are unknown, though a few of her powers are very clear:

Instantaneous Inter- and Intra-dimensional travel. It is said that there are few places she hasn't been, and her stories of such places seem without limit--From love affairs among alien royalties to an army of children destroying a foreign empire, the validity of her plethora of stories is suspect at best. Many have speculated that her cloak is the secret to her travels, but any attempt to confirm such theories haven been foiled before they even began, almost by divine consequence.

She is innately poly-lingual, proficient in just about every language in the known Universe.

Intensely persuasive. It is not known whether her charm has a supernatural origin or not, but what is known is that it is almost impossible to deny her a request. Many homeowners have found themselves her quarterer for several weeks, unwittingly the victim of her silver tongue.

She is assumed to have a life-span greater than that of a regular human, though as her birth date is unknown, this is difficult to prove.

She is also to be noted in many major events throughout history, leading some conspirists to conclude that she is deeply interwoven into the mechanisms of society. Given her acute knowledge of many supposedly secret facts and projects, this is not entirely unlikely.

Her favorite past-time, aside from traveling the Universe, is the transportation of other people, particularly superheroes, to any destination they wish to go (Or sometimes object to go). The end result, she is responsible for the existence of many alien species, both friendly and hostile, on Earth (Her favored destination).

Reef - A unique alien from his/it's homeworld of Neeeider'on, Reef is collection of hundreds of thousands of individual organisms, similar to coral, working in unison with a singular conscience composed of every cell. Technically, Reef is a "democratic society", with each cell voting on every reaction to every stimuli and responding nearly instantaneously and unanimously. The end result, however, is what appears to be a singular personality and, for practical purposes, it is.

Reef, by choice, assumes the general shape of a humanoid while on earth, but is also capable of slowly morphing his body into most any other shape physics will allow. He technically does not have a gender (As he is sexless), but is often referred to as a "He" given that the remote voice module he uses to communicate utilizes a computerized voice similar to a man.

Reef arrived on Earth due to the Traveller, who was responsible for teaching him many human languages and supplied him with the voice module. Reef claims he left his planet to seek a life beyond the norm of Neeeider'on, which consists mostly of remaining in place catching small prey to sustain life, while having philosophical, scientific, and sometimes comedic discussions with nearby colonies through slow-morphing charades. Reef has grown fond of Earth and it's unique communities, which mimic it's own biological mechanics but, in his opinion, on a more grand scale. Thus, he fights for the people of these societies and seeks improve their lives.

Reef's personality is contemplative and wise, often seeking diplomatic solutions to problems. His thousands of cells each have a reliable storage capacity, giving Reef an immense potential for knowledge and information (A fact which greatly helped his learning of dozens of languages in a short time period of time). While he is not of a genius level intellect, it is safe to compare him somewhat to a human with Eidetic memory.

Reef has two primary abilities:

Stinging cells which fire upon contact (Or near contact) with an enemy. The poison these cells secrete come in two varieties: A highly sedative, highly hallucinogenic toxin which few foes can withstand for more than a handful of minutes, and a deadly, fast acting poison that can kill large mammals in a matter of minutes. The latter he uses mostly for the food he preys on to survive.

The ability to sustain large trauma and quickly regenerate lost cells (Can regenerate half of his body in roughly three days). As he is made from hundreds of thousands of individual cells, each capable of reproducing, Reef is capable of recreating lost cells at an extraordinary rate, given that the nutritional material is present. An unfortunate result of this, however, is the potential loss of memory, as each cell is responsible for maintaining mental information. Reef is capable of optimizing and duplicating storage of these brain activities to ensure important events and facts are not lost upon the death of individual cells, though to do this he has to enter a stage of "Hibernation" to bureaucratically organize the memories in the ideal way.

Ligo - A mutant human with immense power, Ligo is capable of detecting and manipulating gravitational fields created from all nearby mass. His power decreases over a distance, but for an understanding of his power:

He is capable of negating the gravity of Earth in a manner to induce "Freefall" over a range of a roughly two mile radius. Maintaining this manipulation requires large amounts of concentration, thus limiting other uses of his powers.

He could, unfortunately, crush a normal human being to a painful death.

Ligo is otherwise physically unimposing, and theoritically if no mass is nearby his powers are useless. Regardless, this supervillain is the object of fear for many people.

Yi'dith Vi'vili - The patriarch of his alien clan of Uylli'dith, Vi'vili is apart of a militaristic and adversarial clan of aliens (Ry'diths) with limited telekinetic powers. Invisible to most other races, the Ry'diths have a single, long telekinetic "Tentacle" which extends outwards from their chest. It can be used in many ways:

To coil and ensare opponents.
To grab objects to use offensively or defensively.
To psychically communicate with other beings.
To psychically assault other beings.

Vi'vili, being the most powerful of his clan, possesses the longest and strongest telekinetic abilities of his clan. Vi'vili has come to Earth to prove his and his clans martial prowess by conquering the planet, and thus he controls many minions with considerably weaker powers than him. Outside of their telekinetics, the Ry'diths have relatively weak physical bodies, and so are vulnerable to attacks.

Awwww man, I love that! Guess it would work like a drug, you have to keep going back and getting a bigger & bigger hit to get the same effects, all the while your personallity is slowly changing to being more negative and violent.

It could even be a massive storyline:
You try it and get stuck in the cycle, trying to find a way of getting off it
OR
Watch one of your comrades try it and decend into evil.

Either way you've got a secretly evil corperation to take down. Imagine how much of the stuff some of the higher level guards in their head-quarters would have taken!

Injustice League, ect.), change it into a "Super" corporation. It's been done before, but it's an excellent bit of variation for the gameplay having to storm a corporation HQ instead of a Supervillain HQ.

Yeah, the dynamic I was going for was sort of 'Superhero Amway', with well-meaning superheroes busting their hump to sell enough product to afford better powers. The company's security would be one thing, but imagine what the Board of Directors would be taking. I have an idea for what the power source is, but I think it would work best as a big reveal/surprise.

Scratch, also known as Blue - Tall, lanky, blue haired and soft-eyed, Scratch (Real name unknown) has no "Powers" to speak of, causing many to question his moniker's basis. Given his laid back attitude, one would not think him for the hero type. However, when forced to action, Scratch can exhibit exceptional finesse and intuition, as well as a general aptitude for all tasks human. He excels in pin-point precision, and is well-known for his use of high-grade laser weapons to dismantle his foes, though how he obtained them is unknown. He's a sharp dresser, typically sporting a dark blue casual jacket and slacks, tie loosened at the neck, and a pair of lace-up oxfords, an outfit which sums up his easy-going philosophy. He brings all the witty and dark rhetoric of an anti-hero glossed over a strict-yet-unnoted-code of justice (Though he is reluctant to talk of his motives). Regardless, Scratch has a style of scraping by many severly grave situations without a.... Scratch on him.

He's the definition of smooth jazz, cool summers, and late nights under the lamp posts.

Rodoh and Kratz - A 8'6" tall behemoth and a fragile, stunted genius, this odd couple fight crime as one in a not so typical fashion--Krats straps himself to Rodoh's back and provides tactical and observational support while Rodoh uses his unconventional strength to smash faces. While they began simply, Krats has created an armored, weaponized suit (Which Krats calls "The Pod) to augment their fighting ability. Now, hydraulic pistons perfectly in tune with Rodoh's nervous system amplify his punching and lifting powers, while an assortment of gadgets are attached to the armored pod in which Krats resides.

Rodoh
Superhuman strength. Capable of lifting a little more than 1,000 lbs from a deadlift on his own.
Suit enhances his strength, allowing him to lift almost 2,300 lbs..
Feeble minded.
Compassionate and empathetic, even if he doesn't know how to express it. Would be a pacifist were it not for his passion of protecting others.

Krats
Genius Level intellect. Highly skilled in:
Robotics and mechanics, firearms to an extent.
Sociology and psychology.
Physics, both practical and theoretical, and mathematics
Literature and the arts.
Loyal to Rodoh, sharp witted and self-deprecating. Realist.
Highly perceptive.
Premier manufacturer of laser weaponry. Owns company privately under a guise, operates it through his business partner Jon Summers.

Krats' gadgets vary from sortie to sortie, and include:

Sonar
Long-range laser rifle, which folds into the pod.
Thrusters
Translator
Cloaking device
Air-launched Bolas.

And more.

Mr. Whimsy (I) - The first Mr. Whimsy was a young public school teacher named Norman Brooks. When one of his students comes to class with a black eye, Brooks is overcome with rage that he cannot get justice for his young charge through legal and legitimate means. Wearing the garb of a beloved children's show host from his own childhood, Mr. Whimsy, Brooks confronts the abuser and kills him by accident. Mr. Whimsy becomes the protector of children, violently stopping child abusers. Mr. Whimsy was shot to death by an off-duty cop, Todd Logan, when he tried to stop the crooked cop from beating his son, Hunter Logan.

Mr. Whimsy (II)- When the actor who portrayed the TV character Mr. Whimsy first heard of the deeds being carried out in his name, he was secretly pleased that one of his vicarious children was protecting the youth. Upon hearing of Norman Brooks' demise, he pulled out his old Mr. Whimsy costume and went on one last adventure. This adventure ended with both Mr. Whimsy and Officer Logan dead.

Mr. Whimsy (III)- The current Mr. Whimsy uses only non-lethal means to stop child abuse. Not much is known about him, as he is still quite new to the world of crime fighting, but there is a strong rumor that he is, in fact, Hunter Logan.

Love the acronym and basic description but the full name needs some work. Maybe something like America's New Generation of Super Teenagers.

Oh and I just had a brainstorm of my own. Don't mmuch like the name but it's the concept I really want to make known.

Desensitizer - A supervillian who operates by blunting people's senses. Like blinding victims so they cross into busy streets or blocking their ability to hear him tunneling into the bank vault. Stuff like that.

Playback - A time-traveller who can reverse his own timeline. To prevent the character from being a deus ex machina, he can only "playback" his life for a set period of time, anything from six hours to merely minutes, depending on how strong his power source is. And while his powers enable to give himself a second chance, he cannot simply go back in time again to make a "third chance". His catchphrase is "It's Playback time!", naturally.

Stan - A former nuclear power plant janitor, Stanley Wood gained super powers from a radiation accident. With his newly found powers, Stan is set to save the world ... however, the radiation didn't really give him any decent powers. He can give people the shock of a 9v battery. He can't turn invisible, but he can turn "slightly transparent". He can read minds, but it's usually the mind of a random person within a 10-mile radius from him. Stan is pretty much the Z-list of all superheroes and largely ineffective against villains, often prompting him to get saved by other superheroes. Despite this, Stan's true strength is in his heart and regardless of his shortcomings, he will never quit trying to save the day.

Crimson Shadow - A throwback hero, sort of like the Phantom of the 1930's radio play.

Locke & Key Male/Female tandem, where Locke is this brutish force of protection, and Key has the ability to infiltrate anything, be it a locked door to a security system.

Stagger - A force wielding mutant, able to repel or knockback from a distance.

Siphon - Devious and sultry female, able to weaken opponents with a simple touch. Uses her feminine wiles to lure in unsuspecting men.

The Great Inquisitor - Little leery on the name, to be quite honest. I liked the idea of someone being like the Senator from the X-men story arc, who wanted to eliminate mutants for humanity. However, in this instance, he's a fear mongering preacher, who has taken up the idea of the Spanish Inquisition, and "modernized" it, preying on people's fears of those who are perceived as bigger/stronger/faster/better.

Truth/Consequences - Son of the Great Inquisitor, Truth/Consequences was a twin when born, yet his brother didn't survive. Filling the void, T/C began talking to the "spirit" of his brother, even going so far as to differentiate half of his body, to replicate the brother he'd lost. Fully following his father's line of thought, T/C serves as the Inquisitors right hand, and primary interrogator.

Dervish - Blade wielding madman and skilled assassin.

Wunderkind - German born hero, falls into a classic Superman mold.

The Cool Tool

The Bird Nerd

The Purple Nurple!

Nordic names are also fun too, like Valdis the Destroyer

And finally everyone loves pun names:

Murder Will - old guy with a katana that likes to take on hot young blondes
Scruffy the Van Tire Slayer - notorious vandalizer known for slashing tires with wooden knives
Roht - either a big nordic viking or a very scrawny weakling :D
Pig-Iron Man - let's get medieval!
Mustang Lee
Atom Brigand - supervillan by night, video game designer by day? You decide!

Catman and Batwoman? :D

The Agoraphobic
The Steward

Both in use I'm afraid. Batwoman actually exists and was originally an attempt to deflect rumors of Batman being gay. While Catman is Adam West's character on The Fairly Oddparents on Nickelodeon. Sort of an homage to West's most famous role played as an ineffective parody for laughs.

I got a few that I created when me and my artist buddy were trying to pitch comic books... none of them were accepted. But if anyone is wants to illustrate a comic book then I'd gladly have another bash! In the meantime I'll gladly suggest them!

Wiffin & Jazz
Wiffin McBride and Jazz Jamerson are 70's cops from from the seventies-futuristic Metro City. Both are 70s cop sterotypes with Wiffin sporting a massive mustache and Jazz a purple disco suit and Afro. They are tasked with stopping the cities super-villians by their boss Captain Parton. There were a number of other characters but we didn't flesh them out enough during the early stages.

Erznmine
Metro City's head gangster, turned into a 8ft jet coloured skinned monster after an incident during a chase involving Wiffin & Jazz through s, actually i cant remember, some sort of bio chemical plant.

Jadea
A Wiffin & Jazz female villian. A mage of chaos magic.

Danger Balv
Not so much a villian but can also be a good guy. He's a ninja avenging his fathers death. A Wiffin & Jazz villian but not really bad.

Bulletproof
From Wiffin & Jazz. Big black guy with bulletproof skin.

There's also...

Man-Man
The man bitten by a radio active man. He now has the powers of two men. A removal man who wanted to become a pro wrestler and with he new found powers he does! Until he meets...

El Demonio del Volcán
An evil luchadore who goes mad with power when he finds a bewitched luchalibre mask.

Jim Ant-Arms
This ones a bit harsh but I'm going with it. Jim is a learning difficulties kid who has no arms and cannot speak. He is being bullied and on day falls on a ant nest. The ants are rare and mysterious and bite Jim, their venom flows through his veins, but now he can hear and speak to them, he is also super intelligent. They ants crawl upon his arms and give him super strength, and can change into any shape they see fit. He was originally suppose to be in the comic book team 'The Others'.

The Blind Spanker
A member of the team 'The Others'. He can blindfold people within a 40ft radious and spank them similantiously.

The Kebab
A member of 'The Others'. After a deep fat fryer accident he can now fire chilli sauce out of his hands.

Super-Sweeper - this cleaning supply from an alien world reacted with Windex to transform into a grime-fighter of epic proportions, sweeping crime into the rubbish bins.

and its arch-nemesis:

Gryme Tyme: - an intelligent dust bunny who seeks only entropy and decay.

Super Salad - An intelligent, crime-fighting piece of lettuce, socking it to poor nutrition!

and his arch-nemesis:

Sir Loin - this evil British aristocrat is on the warpath to push unhealthy red meats and high cholesterol to kill off the world's leaders through heart disease.

The Journalist - an ace undercover reporter who roots out crime where ever he finds it. He is not a physical type though, so he fights back by publishing exposes and turning evidence over to the proper authorities

and his arch-nemesis:

The Shredder: The mastermind behind all the white coller crimes, the Shredder takes personal pride in eliminating every paper trail he ever leaves behind. Although he's a top tier criminal, he's taken a special interest in foiling the Journalist wherever he can.

The Tiny Tims: A band of orphans who act as aides and informants to other, better, bigger super heroes.

and their arch-nemesis:

Kristoff Kringle: An evil German sweat shop owner obsessed with infiltrating and uncovering the Tiny Tim network so he can populate sweat shops with free labor all around the world.

Daughter Gaia: A living representation of mother earth, begat hundreds of years ago but held in stasis until the world needed her most.

Senator Milfred Ogden Globchalk: A self-made industrialist driven to profits no matter how much nature he has to loot, pillage, or steal.

I just wanna preface this by saying that in 2007 a friend and I wrote a script called The Assassin's Handbook. A graphic novel and we met with an assistant editor for the company First-Second Publishing. You can look them up online. We had lunch, discussed the story and handed the script over. She took it to her editor who liked the script but felt the violent story was not in line with the companies more hipster, artsy fartsy stupid stuff. Anyway, he liked it enough to recommend us to some other publishers while also keeping it around and not throwing the script away incase First Second was able to use it... Unfortunately, I was told First-Second got bought out and both that editor and the assistant were either reassigned or let go. Not only that but at that time I was going through a major break up with a girl I'd been engaged to. The break up had a horrible impact on my life and I just wasn't in any position to follow up on the story... Anyway, I figured it was time to go back to the drawing board and enrolled in some classes with a former Spider-Man editor and writer, Danny Fingeroth... He taught me alot about the comic book business and writing for comics.... And thanks to his help I began working on some stuff... So this leads me to this part of my story and that is this. 4 Months ago I had the priviledge of submitting a story to IDW Publishing. I am lucky enough to have contacts with the CEO of IDT and his son and IDT owns IDW Publishing (IDW publishes GI Joe, Transformers, True Blood, Buffy, Angel etc. etc.) Anyways so the CEO and his son loved my GI Joe script and set up a meeting with IDW top guy Ted Adams. Ted Adams passed it along to the GI Joe editor. Anyway, UNFORTUNATELY GET THIS... My script was basically about following a normal blue collar guy going through a divorce, who has some young kids... hard working guy... who gets laid off, his life is in shambles and a long time buddy of his in a similar position in life is not nearly as depressed. The buddy has been going to some meetings in the basement of a pool hall nearby.. He offers our main character to tag along one night. He does. Theres a meeting and its being chaired by a Cobra Viper in full uniform.. Anyway, long story short the idea was to chronicle the guys entrance into Cobra. The idea being that, The United States is a huge country. Its not all about the big name characters in the GI Joe universe. Its not all about the big citys and famous locations. My idea was to present a VERY VERY REALISTIC, DARK GRITTY LOOK at the Cobra world... That in those small towns in America, in the pool hall or the back of the liquor store or maybe even the library after hours or in some ones apartment late at night or just that somewhere there are chapters of Cobra... how the recruiting process worked and that beneath every Viper helmet was a story.. Like I'm 26 years old and I grew up watching GI Joe cartoons, reading the Marvel GI Joe comics and you know, even as a kid I hated how Cobra Vipers and just goons in general (For Ninja Turtles it'd be the Foot Soldiers and even Bebop and Rocksteady to a certain degree. For Batman the Joker would always have hundreds of clowns at his disposal.) I just hated how all these thousands of bad guy goons would be these faceless people who could NEVER EVER shoot straight. Batman, Spiderman, GI Joe members, Ninja Turtles, theyre one person or a small team of several people... four turtles for example... but literally hundreds of "thugs" would shoot at them and the bullets would fly all over the place. Like Greedo vs Han Solo. Greedo is not even 2 feet away from Han Solo and he shots and misses! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! That used to enrage me and I developed this idea into WHO are these people? Who joins Cobra? Who becomes a Foot Soldier? In practicle terms, arent these people criminals then by being apart of these groups? Are they on the run? Are they fugitives?? Or thanks to their armor/uniform there faces are concealed so perhaps nobody even knows! Which sets up the dynamic of... you could run a story arch where youre looking at a 3rd grade elementary school class and the kids all love their teacher but HEY Mr. Bloom who is married with kids of his own and is rather fit for a guy in his early fourties... HEY in his closet is a friggen Cobra Viper helmet and uniform! WOW an elementary school teacher! Stuff like that... Or I would say, is being a Viper then like being in the US military... and so its a full time job? Then I ask, could Cobra actually AFFORD to pay all these people? Then you think of all the weapons, bases, vehicles etc. and know they have billions at their disposal so the Vipers have to be full time employees. At any rate, that was my story... UNFORTUNATELY the reply I got from the GI Joe editor was that he loved it but that it had already been done several months prior to my submission... obviously not done exactly to the T but that a close enough storyline had run and he gave me issue numbers to check out too... Anyways though I have an open invitation to send in submissions and what have you its just that I don't want to over do it... The reason I'm blessed with this opportunity is because the CEO of IDT's wife and son have been clients of my father and my fathers business partner for 20 years and my father is in the process of trying to do other unrelated business with them so I don't want to step on toes and piss off my old man and thereby potentially screw up whatever it is hes trying to do and at the same time I dont want to turn into a nuisance. I did only send in that one proposal though and of course will do so again but this time I'm going to do my homework and be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that whatever it is I attempt to has not already been done in any way shape or form, NOT EVEN CLOSE so that I wont be given the same reason for rejection... And also to evoke a favor like this I wanna make sure that whatever I try with again is like a top notch, world class storyline, you know??? I wanna know in my heart that its something great and special.... so when I feel like that about a particular story is when I'll try again... its gotta be great.. Not good, you know what I mean??? Anyway my reason for giving this long arse preface and backstory is so that anybody who is interested and wants to chat about comics/comic ideas/writing comics/has any questions about comic writing (i.e format, yes, comic book writing has its own format! you cant just write a comic book, you have to write in comic book format and there are essentially TWO accepted styles in the industry. Marvel has its own style that they use and they WILL NOT accept any other style... the rest of the industry goes by a different script format... The reasons for this is one gives the artist more liberties with a story whereas the other script format is more geared to giving the writer more freedom. Marvel uses the one that gives the artist more reign.) I would love to help. I am also putting it out there so that anybody involved with the game, I can help out in any way with my limited involvement in comics but having been taught by a former spider-man editor and current teacher at the prestigious manhattan based New School Danny Fingeroth (he teaches a comic book course at the New School college) and so on, i have been involved with GDS for many many years going back to the EWR days on the EWR sites and of course .500 studios and since the beginning of TEW at Greydog. I have always made myself available to help with TEW games and the Cornell Verse and I am here to do anything at all that I can for Adam and Greydogs next endeavor, The Greatest Cape which I hope sells great, I know it'll be a great game. Anyways, sorry for the insanely long preface here are my suggestions

The Psychic Psychologist!!

I can see it now

TPP is sitting at his desk, man walks in. Lays down on the couch. TPP calmly gets up walks to a dresser in his office, pulls out his keys unlocks it and pulls out a briefcase, opens said briefcase and slowly begins to assemble a rifle. The man on the couch curiously asks, "whats going on?" TPP very calmly walks back to his desk picks up his phone and asks his wife to meet him at a bridge tonight, he cant explain why now and that he wont be available for calls, shell have to meet him there at midnight and hangs up. TPP walks over with rifle in hand to the guy on his couch and tells him, "According to my powers, you're going to begin an affair with my wife, the two of you will concoct a life insurance scheme that will involve my death and if I don't do something about it, you both will get away with it. I'm sorry."

Or

Man walks in lays down on the couch not even a minute guys by and TPP grabs his telephone and calls the police. The man is shocked and asks "what is the meaning of this!" as TPP says, "listen, my case load is way too dramatic and emotional right now for me to be seeing or dealing with any serial killers, plus the thing at the end with that fourth victim.. thats just way too wierd. That's out of my range as a psychologist and believe me brother, if I can't help you, this is probably the best thing for you. Yes, 911... I have the Lakeview Slayer here, this is not a prank, back up is necessary too because he is armed and although I'm not in a hostage situation right now, I will be very soon."

Or

Guy walks in and before he gets a chance to lay down TPP is on the phone with his receptionist demanding she call a cleaning service and bring in the office mop and all the paper towels she can find in the building. TPP hangs up and the startled man is paused. TPP tells him to go ahead and lay down, he apologizes for abrupt and random phone call. The patient lies down and says, "I'm sorry but why the random call for so many paper towels?" and TPP flatly replies, "Well I'm sorry Jerry, and yes, I already know what you're going to say, friends call you PeeWee but this is a business relationship and I don't think I could ever call another man that name. Nevertheless, I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you this Jerry but according to my powers in about 20 minutes after you begin talking about some childhood traumas, you're going to reach into your pocket where you're currently stationing a concealed firearm and youre going to proceed to splatter your brains all over my expensive, beautiful carpet and sofa. Oh and also, yes, I am about to take the next 10 minutes before you get into your childhood to explain to you how you know this and even though its going to end with you sarcastically not believing me my answer to the last question of that conversation is the same as it is right now, no, there is nothing i can say or do that will prevent you from doing what you're going to do. So on with your questions about my powers."

I can see so much potential with the Psychic Psychologist. I think he could be best used as a member of like a forensic team or like a super hero CSI or as like a super-hero team member or like a consultant to a super hero team like in real world terms if Xavier were to have students who do crazy things in his school like violently break the rules of the X-Men academy, Xavier would call up his pal TPP to come in and do an assesment on said kid and work with the kid or better yet maybe someone like TPP (by now if your still wondering what TPP is I'm using it as an acronym for The Psychic Psychologist I just figure PP puts too silly and an immature spin on whats already a silly character) would be a full time staff member for the X-Men Academy.

OK, other suggestions:

The Geriatric Genius - Kinda self explanatory. Going along with the X-Men/Xavier Institute/X examples, maybe G.G would be like Beast except instead of a brute crime fighter, he would use his brains and be a non-combatant. Maybe a long tenured, senior teacher at the Xavier institute or like vice principal..basically I think of Merlin in the long long white flowing beard and magicians cloak sense when I think of Geriatric Genius. Instead of a crime fighting, battling genius in the vein of Richard Reid, Beast, Dr. Doom etc. etc. someone more along the lines of Professor X. Someone who is insanely smart and does no fighting and lets his phenominal intelligence speak for itself. The one thing about The Geriatric Genius is I see him kind of being a very very very cranky old man but add some alzheimers in there for comic purposes (no one get offended, Im not making fun of alzheimers, this is all in good fun for the game!).

Anti-Man

Another semi-self explanatory. Anti-Man would be the greatest villain of human kind. He is Anti-Man, therefore Anti human existence. I see him as having the powers of all the destructive forces of nature. Volcanic. Earthquakes, Tornados, Tsunamis, Thunder Storms and basically all natural disasters he can create and control. In addition his blood is poison, he can bite and poison ala The King Cobra. I think of Anti-Man being so dangerous and such a villain to mankind that perhaps he is of ancient egyptian origin and has been imprisoned in the core of the earth... Perhaps a brief backstory is that he was around in the time of the Ancient Egyptians, way way way before Christ... before Judaism... back in the times when people worshipped the sun. The reason that I suggest that is because it would explain why if he existed way back when and caused wars and was so famous etc. there is no record of his existence or the war he caused etc. other than hieroglyphics which could easily be explained as having been misinterpretted like pyramid explorers and hieroglyphic readers saw images of Anti-Man and all his terrible things in hieroglyphix but mistook the stories as Anti-Man being just a human pharoa or which doctor that did bad things as oppossed to this actual living monster that waged war. It'd be alot easier to have a hard time finding info out about him if hes around during ancient egyptian times versus him being around during ancient greek/roman/jesus/bible times when historians existed in bulk. And so yea therefore because of his abilities he was treated like a God and worshipped but because his purpose is being anti-man kind he wrecklessly slaughtered and killed because his whole purpose isnt world domination its the extinction of mankind. Realizing this, a war was waged and Anti-Mans blind followers who considered it a blessing to be killed by their god raised up a pro-anti-man army to face the anti-anti-man army and the anti-man army was beaten with Anti-Man himself being trapped either in the earths core or BETTER YET! He was trapped in some sort of ancient element or some sort of ancient glass or structure burried deep in the Sphinx or deep in a deeply burried pyramid and one day some greedy group of pyramid raiders found the pyramid, were insanely pissed off because it took them a decade to find a way in and after a year of exploring it and seeing NOTHING but hieroglyphics discussing the war, commemorating all the men who gave their life to beat the anti man the pyramid raiders found no jewels no treasure NOTHING except this giant structure with what looked like a mummy inside. They bring the structure with the mummy onto their ship and head back where it takes months to find a tool that would even scratch the ancient glass the mummy is in and finally its decided that something like wolverines adamantium is the only thing that would pierce this ancient glass and so eventually its opened, Anti-Man is awoken and to his delight mankind has populated trillions since his defeat meaning so many more humans to slaughter.

Anyway, those are my ideas. Hope they help thanks for reading!

Had a read though. Am hoping to see a few more serious names getting thrown out there.

Regarding some of the taken/not taken names ...

I had a look up of several character names like Sandstorm etc ... You'll find there's lots of characters and creatures with these names. You're not really going to be able to be completely original with the comic book verse. I imagine so long as the characters aren't too similar it shouldn't be a huge problem. Not saying that people should ignore if a name is taken ... obvious Spider-man would be a problem, whilst the Hulk is word thats been used so many times it doesn't matter ... unless you say it's 'incredible'.

I imagine Adam will make any decisions for himself, but just opinion.

Just saying ...

Xenophobia - Mind control and paranoia powers
Multiplicity - Character that can duplicate itself
Emollient - Obscure character with healing powers
Pinke - The greatest hero/villain of all time. ALL time.

Here's a few I used to use in the Marvel Super Heroes P&P RPG. Most are villains though (I used to GM the games you see ;)).

Ardhi: An African hero with telekenetic power over earth, stone, minerals, and metals.

Whiteout: A villain with the ability to produce invisibility fields over objects. Uses his power in a more supportive role of other villains (making a hero power source "disappear" or hiding another villain). Like his name suggests, he wears an all white outfit.

Strigoi Moroi: A red haired, blue eyed, two hearted Romanian vampire who lends his name to no less than two mythical creatures related to vampires in his homeland. Posses most of the strengths and weaknesses of normal vampires but is only be paralyzed by having a stake driven into him, and then only when both hearts are pierced. He can also become insubstantial at will and still drain creatures of their lifeforce by merely touching them.

Entropy Inc.: A well-funded and corrupt Private Military Contractor (PMC). Hides itself behind a veneer of corporate gloss and feigned legitimacy while having it's finger in many pies, some less above the board than others. Uses it's powerful contacts, money, private army of bloodthirsty mercenaries and elite commandos, and even hired villains, to protect its interests.

Hand Cannon: A dishonorably discharged army sharpshooter, the villain Hand Cannon lost his primary hand and arm just below the elbow during a shootout with police. He had it replaced with a powerful cybernetic laser that he eventually mastered the use of, giving him such fine control over the weapon that he could do delicate engraving with it or turn it up to full power and blow the door off a bank safe and any level inbetween. A one-trick pony, but it's a very good trick. Hires out to other super villains as a sniper and general enforcer.

The Executioner: An anti-hero vigilante, The executioner's preferred victims are those who have been charged but escaped conviction for crimes due to technicalities or criminal acts like buying the jury or Judge. His MO is to mimic actual execution methods, such as rigging a target's favorite chair to deliver a lethal shock to anyone who sits in it, or placing a gasbomb in their car and rigging the locks to prevent escape. He doesn't care if innocents get caught in his traps as well, as he sees it, anyone willing to
associate with his target must be in on it and deserve to share their fate. He wears an executioners hood and wields a large headsman's axe and noose lasso when forced to fight.

Colonel Р: Formerly known as Iron Curtain, "The Soviet Super Soldier" and one of his nations leading super heroes. With the fall of communism, he took the opportunity to change his name, his loyalty being to the country and it's people rather than political ideals. Colonel Р's main attribute, as suggested by his former identity, is his supernatural resistance to physical damage, but he also impressively strong and has elite level training in hand-to-hand combat and small arms use.

The Nihilist: Formerly Dr. Simon Nils, a scientist working on the concept of alternate dimensions. An accident involving one of his prototype gateways left him with the ability to annihilate matter from existence with a mere touch, a power that first manifested itself when he touched his assistant and resulted in his mind breaking. He discovered that his lab equipment was immune to his touch and designed a suit from it, adopting a new identity to match his rapidly developing new world view. As The Nihilist his extremist views have served him well, allowing a formerly mild-mannered intellectual to terrorize and kill without the slightest hint of regret.

Smiley O'Toole: Conall "Smiley" O'Toole is a humorless Irish mobster whose nickname comes from a prominent scar that twists one side of his lips into a permanent sneer that he got during a knife fight during his teens. He would otherwise be below super hero notice were it not for his bloody rise and domination in the criminal underworld. Intelligent and devious, O'Toole is both a diplomat and an armbreaker as required to keep his illegal empire under control. He finds great irony in using laughing gas to render his opponents helpless, and still enjoys using a knife, often keeping a variety of "pigstickers" on his person to suit the situation.

The Highjacker: The Highjacker is a thief who targets military tech. His MO is to perform raids against transports carrying the tech he wants to steal, then turning around and selling the tech to the highest bidder. The Highjacker mans a heavily armed Armored Fighting Vehicle during these raids and is supported by The Jackals, a biker gang he put together for these jobs. The Highjacker wears a bulky, full-body suit with an attached visiored helmet. The suit acts as a pressure suit with a few hours of air. In addition, the suit has a built in wrist mounted mini flamethrower that acts as The Highjacker's primary personal weapon. As befitting the personal transport of a weapons dealer, The Highjacker's AFV is a heavily armored 8x8 with the best weapons money can't buy, along with storage large enough to hold a few of the Jackals and their bikes.
The Highjacker is in reality Hortensia Jackman, Wealthy industrialist and socialite. She is also the second to hold the title, her father, Tor Jackman, was the first Highjacker and trained his daughter at a young age to be his successor both in the family business and in his criminal activities. When Tor died from a heart attack, she effortlessly slipped into the role and thanks to the bulkiness of the Highjacker suit, it's tinted visor, and it's built in voice changer, even the Jackals never noticed the change. As her father taught her, Hortensia uses her industry connections to select her targets, and occasionally targets her own company to keep from drawing undue attention.

Who was a woman and whose powers aren't remotely related. ;) Whiteout (in the case of the one listed above) is a guy (and I got the idea for his name from a correction fluid brand called Wite-Out). Also, like Pinke pointed out, it's a common term that I doubt Marvel will go to bat over when the character in no way (other than preferred color and name) resembles their creation.

I appreciate that; however Adam's original post says "Please do not post names that are taken from existing comic books"

It's a common term, and the character you're talking about is a d-lister at best that could only vaguely be compared to mine, I hardly think Adam meant to have everyone who wanted to make a suggestion scour The Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe (http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/) to make sure their suggestion in no way shares their name with some minor supporting cast villain.

It'd be preferable if people didn't suggest names that know are already in use from one of the major companies, as they won't be used - both to avoid any legal issues and because I think it's creatively a bit dull; whether your description of them is radically different isn't really relevant in this thread, because - as specified at the start - I'm solely after names, the biographies \ backstories aren't going to be used (I'm intentionally not even reading them to avoid being influenced at all).
