Anyone from Philly maybe could answer this.

Is it true that Philly use day old bread for a philly cheese steak, if so why? I heard when I was a kid Philly uses day old bread, I had one a week ago at a fair and the guy said thats not true. Maybe someone from Philly can answer thanks.

Thanks.

Got fam there.

While it's not true, there actually is one little diner that did make them with day old bread I've been told. Apparently it toasted better.

Old bread does toast better. Fact.

I've got no idea what a Philly Cheese Steak is, but as a pastry chef, I can confirm the above.

Basically it's thin sliced pieces of steak, cheese (melted American, Provolone, or Cheez Whiz being the popular choices), and onions on a hoagie roll. Some places add mushrooms and/or bell peppers. Name comes from Philadelphia, where the sandwich gained its popularity, but they can be found all over the US at places that sell sandwiches.

I really can't believe it, I've gone to Philly almost every year during the summer and until last May I've never gotten my hands on a Philly cheesesteak. If there's a reference in the dictionary for living under a rock, look right here :p
