My newest try at the history of modern baseball will use actual transactions as they occurred in real life with actual lineups. Free agency will show up when it occurred in real life along with other things such as franchise changes/movements.

If anyone would like to have a player followed, please let me know.

A new league was first conceived and nurtured in the minds of Western League President Ban Johnson and White Sox owner Charlie Comiskey. Johnson turned the league into the strongest of the minor leagues within 2 years after taking the helm. Thanks to arranging for solid ownership for each franchise and strongly backing his umpires in all disputes, the fans started coming to this firmly controlled League's games. In 1900, the NL reduced its franchises from 12 to 8 and the newly christened American League moved a franchise into the just abandoned Cleveland area and a franchise was placed in Chicago, after the reluctant consent by the Cubs after Johnson agreed to keep the league as a minor league. In 1901, Johnson made his move. The AL withdrew from the National Agreement and declared its intention to now become a second major league. The AL also erased its midwest region character and placed franchises in Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia now had franchises in both the AL & NL. To obtain players, the AL raided the senior loop for stars as well as everyday players with large salaries offered by those financially sound owners in the AL.

When the AL's first season opened, each team found itself infused with talent from the older league. Possibly the brightest star that first year was Socks Seybold, outfielder for the Philadelphia Athletics, who copped the league's first Outstanding Hitter Award after jumping over from the Cincinnati Reds. In addition to hitting .345, Seybold also drove in 114 runs and hit 18 home runs.

The Boston Americans took the first AL title by a whopping 14.5 games over a Detroit club which suffered a late summer pitching collapse. The Orioles were led by Jimmy Collins (.310-3-96) and Cy Young (28-9, 1.80 ERA), the AL's Outstanding Pitcher. Detroit finished in 2nd place, being led by the bats of Al Shaw (.324-4-79) and Ducky Holmes (.301-8-90) along with the arms of Jack Cronin (19-10, 2.60 ERA) and Ed Siever (18-15, 3.22 ERA). Despite pending litigation in the courts and a declared state of war with the NL, the American League was off and running.

While the upstart AL was playing its first major league schedule, the established NL had finished its 25th campaign. The entry of the AL onto the major league stage also opened an escape value for the players. The bidding war between the leagues allowed about thirty 1900 regulars to jump from the NL to the AL. The new league occupied three of the abandoned NL cities of the 1890's and new teams were placed in direct competition with clubs in Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. Brooklyn and Pittsburgh, along with Philadelphia, provided a closely ran contest that was finally won by the Pirates on the next to last day of the season. As Cincinnati proudly displayed the NL's biggest winner, Noodles Hahn (28-13, 2.33 ERA), the New York Giants unveiled the arm of Christy Mathewson, a 20-game winner in his first full season.

After the 1901 season, the NL owners broke into two factions and the deadlock resulted in the formation of a 3-man directorate of John T. Brush, A.H. Soden and James A. Hart to assume the direction of this shaken league.

Oh, and go Cardinals! Not only are the real transactions & lineups a great feature, but with using these you also play the schedule "as played" and not as printed, as you can see from '01's standings.

Most of the historical transactions in 1901 were mainly releases, signings and players being obtained (purchased, not traded for). I saw one trade made during the offseason but forgot to write down what it was and couldn't go back to find it.

There's also one really great feature: IN GAME SAVES!

Midway through its second season, the American League found its Baltimore outpost in the hands of the enemy, making the completion of the league schedule a muddy issue. Baltimore manager John McGraw got fed up with AL president Ban Johnson that he started negotiations and that resulted in the Orioles being bought by John T.Brush, the Chairman of the NL Executive Committee. The new owner released McGraw, Joe McGinnity, Roger Bresnahan, Dan McGann, Cy Seymour, Joe Kelley and Jack Cronin to sign with the NL clubs, leaving Baltimore with a skeleton crew. On July 17, Ban Johnson used a league regulation to revoke the franchise. The team then became operated by the AL the rest of the season using league funds and Wilbert Robinson was named manager. The Orioles, who had been in a fight with the Browns, Americans and Senators, were 10 games behind and in 4th place and ended up in 6th place, 24.5 games behind. Ban Johnson had more problems in 1902 than just the Orioles and the mess caused by John McGraw. The Pensylvania Supreme Court presented the AL with a court setback by ordering the league to Nap Lajoie, Bill Bernhard and Chick Fraser to leave the Athletics and rejoin the Phillies. Fraser returned to the Phillies, but Johnson found a loophole in the Quaker state law and transferred the contracts to the Cleveland club, who at the time was in fifth place the AL. All the other states involved in this fight ruled against the reserve clause and the other jumpers were allowed to remain where their new clubs. St.Louis replaced Milwaukee in 1902 and raided their NL crosstown team and lured Jesse Burkett, Bobby Wallace, Dick Padden, Snags Heidrick, Jack Harper and Jack Powell to the Browns. Besides the St.Louis jumpers, Ed Delahanty, Elmer Flick and Red Donahue were other top names that left their NL clubs for their new clubs in the AL. Boston went on to win the league title for the second straight season with only three games remaining in the schedule. Jimmy Collins (.345-6-72), the AL's Outstanding Batter, and Buck Freeman (.295-15-104) led the team at the plate and the mound staff was led by the AL Outstanding Pitcher, Cy Young (23-19, 2.27 ERA, 168 k) and Bill Dinneen (26-16, .294 ERA, 159 k). Washington ended up in second place, 4.5 games behind, led by "Big Ed" Delahanty (.315-12-88) and Al Orth (23-13, 2.65 ERA, 93 K). The Cleveland Bronchos, thanks to the new players, finished in third place, 5.5 games behind, thanks to the power hitting of Nap Lajoie (.324-16-78) and the arms of Earl Moore (21-11, 2.03 ERA) and the league's Oustanding Newcomer, Addie Joss (16-12, 2.42 ERA).

In the National League, the Pittsburgh Pirates managed to avoid any losses to the AL's raiding tactics for the second consecutive season and romped to an 12-game pennant winning margin over the distant runner-up, Chicago. The NL's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.336-2-74) led the way of the Bucs squad, which also included Ginger Beaumont (.336-0-88) and Fred Clarke (.326-4-96). Jack Chesbro (23-10, 2.15 ERA)and Deacon Phillippe (24-8, 1.79 ERA, 3 saves) gave the Pirates a pair of 20-win aces. Chicago's second-place finish was due in part to Johnny Kling (.288-1-83) and Frank Chance (.268-2-50) at the plate and the pitching of Jack Taylor (19-12, 2.35 ERA) and Pop Williams (17-11, 2.09 ERA), the senior circuit's Outstanding Newcomer. After practically losing all of its offense and top pitchers to the AL, Philadelphia dropped to 6th place. The New York Giants, who started the season slowly, could not stop from finishing 21.5 games behind even with the infusion of Baltimore talent.

Oh, and go Cardinals!

I am back as well.

As for 12, well I have some problems with it. I always play as a fictional league and it seems that all of my teams lose millions of dollars every year. At the end of every season I have to edit the money the team has.

Also, I find it annoying that the manager of the year always has to go to the team that wins the championship and the team that loses in the championship game. I mean what is the point of the feature if they are just going to do that. Okay end of rant.:D

This looks to be very good and I am glad you brought it back.

In regards to that, this is the reason I'm probably gonna get OOTP 12 soon and refire up the history of the Cardinals dynasty with it. In 11 the Cardinals dominated early on because they kept all their star players. On here they are just a bunch of schlubs like they were in real life.

On here they are just a bunch of schlubs like they were in real life. Thanks to the new features of having the real life transactions & lineups, including schedules "as played" when using those features, we can get a look at what the managers & teams were thinking throughout history.

Also at ootp I am playing with the 1972 Red Sox. If I knew that I would also have gotten the schedule "as played" I could have done it with the transactions/lineups feature.

1903-Year In Review

In the National League, the Pittsburgh Pirates fought all season long with the New York Giants and the Chicago Cubs and held only a 2.5 game lead with only ten games remaining. The Pirates finally were able to eliminate the Cubs with just under a week remaining and then there was two. Pittsburgh and New York battled until the Pirates were able to clinch their third straight title with 3 games remaining. The Pirates were led on the mound by a pair of 20-game winners, Deacon Phillippe (22-13, 2.44 ERA) and Sam Leever (28-7, 2.45 ERA) and the bats of both Fred Clarke (.335-5-96)and Honus Wagner (.339-4-93). The Chicago Cubs ended up in second place, only 3 games behind Pittsburgh, in part due to the hitting of the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Frank Chance (.335-5-89) and the pitching of 20-game winner Jake Weimer (21-9, 2.48 ERA). The New York Giants stayed close throughout the season and finished in third place, 3.5 games back, thanks to the bats of Roger Bresnahan (.333-5-79) and Sam Mertes (.303-5-95) and the arms of both Joe McGinnity (27-17, 3.44 ERA) and Christy Mathewson (28-9, 1.65 ERA), the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher.

The pennant race in the American League was another story as the Cleveland Naps caught fire and never looked back, eventually clinching their first AL title with a week and a half to go. The AL's Outstanding Hitter Award winner Nap Lajoie (.355-10-91) led the attack with Bill Bradley (.301-9-65) and Elmer Flick (.300-4-66) providing added support. The mound staff was led by the AL's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, Earl Moore (19-6, 1.48 ERA), and also featured 18-game winner Addie Joss (18-13, 1.70 ERA). The Boston Americans, winners of the first two AL pennants, finished a distant second place, 11 games behind. Patsy Dougherty (.298-3-73), Buck Freeman (.289-13-106) and Tom Hughes (21-10, 2.15 ERA) were the major stars of the team. The Detroit Tigers ended up in third place, 16 games back, thanks to the bat of "Wahoo" Sam Crawford (.302-3-65) and the arms of George Mullin (22-16, 2.02 ERA) and Bill Donovan (19-15, 1.84 ERA).

The two pennant winners became teams of destiny when their owners made a handshake agreement to face each other in a best of nine series to determine the world's champion. A crowd of over 8,000 were on hand for the first World Series game, a match up between aces Addie Joss and Deacon Phillippe. Joss outpitched Phillippe, winning 6-3, then also hurled a 2-1, gem in game #5 to give the Naps a 4-games-to-1 lead. The Pirates came back to win the next three games to tie the series then Joss outdueled Phillippe for a third time, 4-1, to lead Cleveland to a 5-games-to-4 win for the first "world's championship".

1904 - Year In Review

In the American League, the Cleveland Naps took the lead at the beginning of the season before giving way to the Philadelphia Athletics at the beginning of July. The Naps came back to take the lead during September and held a 4-game lead with a week and a half remaining. Cleveland was able to hold on and clinch their first AL title with a half a week to go. Led by a lineup that included the AL's Outstanding hitter, Nap Lajoie (.346-5-69) and Bill Bradley (.282-4-76), the strength of the team was it's pitching, which was led by the arms of 20-game winners Bill Bernhard (20-15, 2.43 ERA) and Red Donahue (20-12, 1.69 ERA). Philadelphia ended the season in second place, 4 games behind, were led at the plate by Socks Seybold (.323-8-77) and Harry Davis (.287-8-78) and on the mound by Eddie Plank (26-16, 2.45 ERA) and Rube Waddell (29-14, 1.76 ERA), the junior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher. The Boston Americans finished in third place, 5.5 games behind Cleveland, thanks to the hitting of Buck Freeman (.289-6-75) and the pitching of Cy Young (27-15, 2.02 ERA) and a couple of 18-game winners, Bill Dinneen (18-15, 1.68 ERA) and Jesse Tannehill (18-13, 2.11 ERA).

In the senior circuit, the New York Giants took the lead at the beginning of July then took off and coasted to win their first pennant in the modern era as they clinched the NL pennant with slightly over two weeks remaining. Dan McGann (.284-7-89), Sam Mertes (.283-4-98) and Roger Bresnahan (.279-4-90) led the way at the plate and the mound crew was led by 20-game winners Dummy Taylor (26-10, 2.00 ERA), Joe McGinnity (23-17, 2.45 ERA) and Christy Mathewson (30-13, 1.28 ERA), who won the pitching triple crown and was the NL's Outstanding Pitcher. The Cincinnati Reds ended up in second place, a distant 16 games behind, thanks to a pitching staff led by Jack Harper (20-12, 2.19 ERA), Buck Ewing (18-9, 2.25 ERA) and Noodles Hahn (18-17, 2.02 ERA) and at the plate by Cy Seymour (.339-6-88). Pittsburgh finished the season in third place, a whopping 26 games behind the winning Giants, thanks to the bats of the senior circuit's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.332-2-68), Fred Clarke (.324-4-105) and Ginger Beaumont (.302-7-58) and the arms of Sam Leever (14-15, 2.27 ERA) and Deacon Phillippe (14-10, 1.62 ERA).

The American and National Leagues coexisted without incident during the season, but the fall was a different matter. The Naps offered to meet the Giants but the President of the Giants considered the NL to be the premier league so they declined the offer so there was no World Series played at the end of the 1904 season. NL President Harry Pulliam supported John T. Brush by stating that the series was a voluntary arrangement. Brush, however, decided to propose that the World Series be made annual and a compulsory affair. His "rules" of governing the series in playing and financial matters were adopted and were used to set the autumn classic to firm standards for the annual event.

In a pitchers year which saw only four regulars .300 hitters in the American League, the Cleveland team batting average of .262 was good enough to score a league leading 609 runs and bring the Naps their third straight AL championship. The Naps repeat, which they won with 3 games remaining, came about via the AL Outstanding Hitter Nap Lajoie's team-leading .330 batting average and the arms of Addie Joss (23-10, 2.08 ERA) and Otto Hess (18-5, 1.97 ERA). Boston finished in second place thanks to a pitching staff led by Jesse Tannehill (19-12, 2.43 ERA) and 17-game winners Cy Young (17-16, 1.92 ERA) and Bill Dinneen (17-11, 2.11 ERA). The Athletics ended in third place, 6 games behind Cleveland. The Mackmen were led by the arms of 20-game winner Eddie Plank (24-16, 2.46 ERA) and Rube Waddell (19-16, 1.93 ERA) and at the plate by Socks Seybold (.316-7-61) and Harry Davis (.298-13-89).

In the National League, the New York Giants took the lead right from the start and clinched the title with a week and a half to go in the season. The Giants's attack was led by the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Sam Mertes (.333-3-11), Mike "Turkey" Donlin (.319-9-76) and Art Devlin (.294-3-52). The mound staff was led by Joe McGinnity (25-9, 2.12 ERA) and the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher, Christy Mathewson (29-8, 1.56 ERA). The improving Chicago Cubs finished the season in second place, 10 games behind, thanks to the bat of Frank Chance (.331-0-56) and the arms of Jake Weimer (20-10, 1.72 ERA) and Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown (15-9, 1.66 ERA). The Cincinnati Reds finished in third place, a distant 18 games behind the Giants, featuring the hitting duo of Cy Seymour (.323-10-97) and Harry Steinfeldt (.313-4-90) and the arms of Orval Overall (21-17, 2.59 ERA) and Bob Ewing (19-11, 2.27 ERA).

After a one year interruption, the World Series resumed with a dazzling pitching performance by the Giants' staff, led by Christy Mathewson (2-0, 0.43 ERA), holding the Naps to only 8 runs in taking the series 4 games to 1 to win their first world's championship.

The Giants here and in RL have mirrored each other almost identically w/l wise with only a win or two difference each year. A great feat so far with ootp12.

1906 - Year In Review

After 19 years of pennant drought in the National League stronghold of Chicago, the fans finally saw victory in sight. The fans of the Cubs haven't had a happy winter since 1896. The New York Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates stayed with the Cubs until July, but they both fell back when the Bruins kicked it into high gear and pulled away to stay as they clinched the title with almost two weeks remaining. The hitting attack was bolstered by the preseason acquisition of third sacker Harry Steinfeldt (.297-2-79). Player-manager Frank Chance (.303-4-65) batted over .300 for the fourth straight year and Jimmy Sheckard (.270-2-68) provided additional support. Three Finger Brown, in winning 26 games, provided the big reason why the Cubs stayed away from any slumps and was named the NL's Outstanding Pitcher. Rookie southpaw Jack Pfiester contributed with 19 victories. The New York Giants finished in second place, 9 games behind, thanks to the hitting of George Davis (.286-1-51) and Sammy Strang (.280-4-62) and the pitching of 20-game winners Joe McGinnity (25-10, 1.90 ERA) and Christy Mathewson (21-15, 2.55 ERA). The Pirates ended up in third place, 14 1/2 games behind, led by the hitting of the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.333-3-65) and the pitching of Vic Willis (22-12, 2.13 ERA).

While the fans of the Cubs were watching their club take the pennant, the American League was dominated again by the Cleveland Naps, who won an unprecedented 112 games, and ended with an amazing 24 game winning margin. Bunk Congalton (.309-4-84) and Nap Lajoie (.300-1-67) led the hitting attack and the mound staff was led by the four 20-game winners: Bill Bernhard (24-6, 2.05 ERA), Otto Hess (24-10, 2.49 ERA), Bob Rhoads (20-11, 1.90 ERA) and the AL's Outstanding Pitcher, Addie Joss (27-4, 0.95 ERA). The St.Louis Browns ended up in second place, led by the hitting of George Stone (.303-3-62) and the arms of Fred Glade (20-11, 1.89 ERA), Harry Howell (19-12, 1.90 ERA) and Jack Powell (19-8, 2.16 ERA). The Philadelphia Athletics finished in third place, 26 games behind, thanks to the bat of Topsy Hartsel (.312-1-61), the AL's Outstanding Hitter, and the arm of Rube Waddell (21-12, 2.11 ERA, MLB leading 268 whiffs).

The World Series saw the continuing dominance of Cleveland as they outscored the Cubs, 25-12, and won their second world's championship, 4 games to 1. Otto Hess (2-0) was the pitching star of the series.

1907 - Year In Review

The city of Cleveland continues to see the Naps have a stranglehold on the top spot of the American League. The Naps took control around the beginning of June then expand their lead to where they were able to clinch their fifth straight title with about a week remaining. The hitting stars for Cleveland were Nig Clarke (.282-3-67), Nap Lajoie (.281-1-61) and Elmer Flick (.267-3-66) while leading the arms corp was the AL's Outstanding Pitcher, Addie Joss (24-11, 1.69 ERA). The Philadelphia Athletics finished in second place, 11.5 games back, with Harry Davis (.284-8-101) leading the way at the plate while Rube Waddell (21-11, 1.65 ERA) led the pitching staff. The St.Louis Browns ended the season in third place, 16 games behind. They were led at the plate by George Stone (.293-3-56) and Joe Yeager (.292-2-38) and on the mound by Jack Powell (17-16, 2.33 ERA) and a pair of 16-game winners, Harry Howell (16-16, 2.38 ERA) and Barney Pelty (16-14, 2.14 ERA).

The National League witnessed their third team to repeat as champions but wasn't easy as the Chicago Cubs made it two straight by outlasting the Phillies by .005 and 1.5 games. The heart of the Cubs could be found in Harry Steinfeldt (.287-2-68), Frank Chance (.280-1-66) and Joe Tinker (.229-5-71). The pitching department was headed by Mordecai Brown (22-6, 1.26 ERA), along with starters Orval Overall (18-12, 1.75), Jack Pfiester (16-8, 2.01 ERA) and Carl Lundgren (15-9, 1.51 ERA). The Philadelphia Phillies were led at the plate by Sherry Magee (.315-3-71) John Titus (.297-2-87) and Kitty Bransfield (.273-2-101) and on the mound by 20-game winners George McQuillan (20-12, 1.73) and Tully Sparks (26-12, 1.98 ERA), the NL's Outstanding Pitcher. The New York Giants finished in third place, 6.5 games behind, thanks to the bat of Cy Seymour (.276-4-72) and the arms of 20-game winners Joe McGinnity (22-12, 2.16 ERA) and Christy Mathewson (22-13, 2.30 ERA).

The Cubs, the major's winningest team, was favored to win the Series. They pulled through with flying colors, defeating the Naps 4 games to 1, to win their first world's championship.

Are you manually selecting who goes into the Hall of Fame?

Or is the AI doing it? If the AI is doing it what is the criteria you have for entrance into your HOF?

The reason why I am asking is I find the default settings to be a bit harsh and I always end up changing them.

The reason why I am asking is I find the default settings to be a bit harsh and I always end up changing them. The AI is selecting them based on the default except for a few of things. I raised the minimum for saves to 500 (may lower them), I raised the minimum number of wins for automatic selection from 250 to 300 and I lowered the ERA for those with 200-299 wins from 4.00 to 3.80.

Also, just in case you couldn't tell, those that don't have a picture are not in the actual HOF.

In the National League, the New York Giants were fighting it out with the Chicago Cubs and held a slight lead until the beginning of August when the Cubs took a 1.5 game lead. The Giants came back to retake the lead by 3 games by Labor Day. After a couple of weeks, the Cubs faded and New York was able to claim the NL title with a week remaining. Mike "Turkey" Donlin (.342-8-82) led the way for the Giants at the plate with added support from Cy Seymour (.266-4-92). The pitching staff was once again led by the NL's Outstanding Pitcher, Christy Mathewson (30-11, 1.22 ERA) as well as Hooks Wiltse (24-14, 2.24 ERA). The Chicago Cubs finished in 2nd place, 6 games behind, with their pitching and defense leading the way. 20-game winners Ed Reulbach (28-5, 1.25 ERA) and Mordecai Brown (21-11, 1.41 ERA) were the major arms that was backed by an infield in which all four, Frank Chance, Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers and Harry Steinfeldt, won Gold Gloves. The Pittsburgh Pirates, led by the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.332-9-80) and the arm of 20-game winner Nick Maddox (22-8, 1.50 ERA), finished a distant 3rd, 15 games behind the winning Giants.

The National League held no monopoly on tight races as Cleveland, Detroit and Boston fought throughout the season. The Tigers took the early lead and held onto it throughout the summer before Cleveland rallied and took a 4.5 game lead over Detroit and 6.5 game lead over Boston. Both the Tigers and Red Sox were unable to make up any ground during September and Cleveland was able to clinch their sixth straight AL title with only 4 games remaining. The Naps' star Nap Lajoie (.266-1-49) fought through a slump throughout the season but the hitters were backed up by the pitching combination of Heinie Berger (19-11, 1.62 ERA) and Addie Joss (24-12, 1.71 ERA). The Boston Red Sox slipped past Detroit to finish in 2nd place, 5 games behind. Doc Gessler (.287-0-63) and Harry Lord (.256-2-46) were the hitting stars and ace Cy Young (21-14, 1.50 ERA) bounced back from a poor 1907 season to lead the mound staff. The Detroit Tigers ended up in 3rd place, 5.5 games behind the Naps, thanks to the hitting of Ty Cobb (.300-4-74) and Sam Crawford (.272-5-101) while the mound staff was led by the arm of George Mullin (17-12, 1.89 ERA).

The World Series was a showcase of tremendous pitching as Hooks Wiltse (2-0) bested Cleveland's Addie Joss in two starts at the New York Giants swept the Naps to capture their second world's championship.

After winning two of the last three National League pennants, the Chicago Cubs entered the season looking for their third title. The Cubs got off to a slow start out of the gate, falling to 5 games behind on July 1st, they stayed close to the New York Giants then got red hot as Labor Day rolled around and caught the Giants with 10 games to go. Chicago took a 1/2 game lead then managed to stretch it to 1.5 games before clinching the title on the last day of the season. Three Finger Brown (25-12, 2.01), the NL's Outstanding Pitcher, and Orval Overall (20-9, 1.61) formed the heart of the hill staff that led to Cubs back to the NL title. Helping out on the offensive end were Johnny Evers (.295-2-74) and Wildfire Schulte (.264-5-70). While Chicago played great ball the last month plus to come from behind, the New York Giants were consistent winners all year, starting fast and building a 5 game lead then leading by 6 games heading into September, but faded down the stretch to end up in second place, 2 games behind. Moose McCormick (.271-4-78) and Larry Doyle (.283-1-66) were the leaders at the plate with Christy Mathewson (23-10, 1.60) and Bugs Raymond (22-8, 1.82) were the leaders on the mound staff, which included the NL's Outstanding Newcomer, Rube Marquard (11-7, 1 sv, 1.97). The Pittsburgh Pirates, led at the plate by the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.321-1-57) and on the mound by Howie Camnitz (19-12, 1.63) and Vic Willis (17-14, 1.31), finished the season in third place, 5.5 games behind.

As the Cubs came back to halt the Giants from winning an unprecedented fourth NL title, the Detroit Tigers took the lead by 3.5 games after April and never looked back as they halted the Naps pennant streak and won their first American League pennant by 5.5 games. Flashing the strong claws and teeth of the hitting attack was the AL's Outstanding Hitter, Ty Cobb (.328-2-69) and Sam Crawford (.273-3-75) with help from Marty McIntyre (.270-1-59). George Mullin (23-10, 1.77) and Ed Willett (20-11, 1.64) were the stars on the hill. The Boston Red Sox fell as far back as 14.5 games on September 1st then came on strong to end the season in second place, 5.5 games behind the Tigers. Tris Speaker (.283-8-70) and Harry Wolter (.270-6-68) were the stars at the plate and the Red Sox mound staff was led by the junior circuit's Outstanding Newcomer, Smokey Joe Wood (20-14, 5 sv, 1.41) and Frank Arellanes (15-9, 1.65). The AL's Outstanding Pitcher, Chief Bender (27-7, 2 sv, 1.08) led the Philadelphia Athletics to a third place finish, .001 behind the Red Sox. Leading the Mackmen's attack was "Home Run" Baker (.307-3-80) and Danny Murphy (.257-4-67).

The Series went the distance with six of the seven games being decided by 2 runs or less. The Cubs jumped out to a 2-0 game lead before heading to Detroit where the Tigers swept the next three games. Back home at West Side Park, the Cubs tied the Series at 3 games apiece as Ed Reulbach hurled a 2-0 shutout. In the deciding final game, George Mullin out dueled Three Finger Brown as Detroit won, 4-3, in 12 innings to win their first world's championship.

1910 - Year In Review

U.S. President William H. Taft opened the 1910 baseball season by throwing out the first ball. His actions served to mark baseball as the "official" national pastime and started the trend of this political art into the 20th century. The people at the game, including Vice President James Sherman, highly approved of this unprecedented event. Washington's pitcher, Walter Johnson, responded to the turnout by shutting out the Philadelphia Athletics, 2-0. Taft's presence, unfortunately, didn't change the fortunes of the Senators as this was only an aberration as the Senators finished in 6th place.

The Philadelphia Athletics recovered from this opening day whitewash by playing championship ball the rest of the season and clinched the AL pennant, their first, with just under half a week remaining. The Mackmen were led by the hitting of Eddie Collins (.346-3-71), Frank Baker (.304-3-70) and Danny Murphy (.270-7-96). The mound staff was led by the AL's Outstanding pitcher, Chief Bender (26-6, 1.33), Cy Morgan (22-8, 1.70) and Eddie Plank (19-14, 1.77). Two-time AL champion Boston Red Sox stayed in the running until the end and finished in 2nd place. Boston's offense was led by Tris Speaker (.334-6-86) and Jake Stahl (.280-9-103) with Smokey Joe Wood (18-8, 2.14) leading the arms along with Eddie Cicotte (17-11, 2.44) and Ray Collins (17-10, 1.48). The defending world champion Detroit Tigers dropped to 3rd place and was led at the plate by the AL's Outstanding Hitter, Ty Cobb (.352-6-96) and the arms of 16-game winners Wild Bill Donovan (16-14, 2.33) and Ed Summers (16-8, 1.94).

The Chicago Cubs continued their reign over the National League as the kingpins of the senior loop. Finishing 6 games ahead of the field, the Cubs easily won their fourth pennant in five years, never leaving first after July. Frank Chance (.289-1-78), Solly Hofman (.309-2-84) and Wildfire Schulte (.247-11-99) supplied much of the drive while Three Finger Brown (23-8, 1.69) lodged his usual 20+ victories but the key development turned out to be King Cole (16-11, 2.52), who became an unexpected Outstanding Newcomer Award winner in the NL. The Giants came in second; Christy Mathewson (26-7, 1.62), the NL's Outstanding Pitcher, leading the mound staff and the senior circuit's Outstanding Hitter, Fred Snodgrass (.309-2-48), leading the offensive attack. Pittsburgh finished in 3rd place after a collapse saw them drop out of first by the end of June to third and 13 games behind by the beginning of September. Although Babe Adams (24-12, 1.80) registered 24 wins, he couldn't stop the bleeding. Tommy Leach (.299-5-61) and Fred Clarke (.276-5-59) led the Bucs' hitting attack.

Frank Chance led his Cubs into the World Series again with great confidence in his pitching staff. This confidence was rewarded as the pitchers, led by Three Finger Brown's two wins and 0.50 ERA, held the AL's Athletics to 8 runs as the Cubs swept the Series to claim their second world's championship.
