Is this meant to be a much harder way to play the game? I ask because, on medium difficulty, you are only allotted 15,000 points. Meanwhile, a character generated via backstory is given far more than 15,000 points worth of powers and attributes (even taking into account any negative attributes assigned). It is frustrating as I would like to utilize the custom hero function, but, I currently find it far too restricting without making the early game an incredible grind.

I believe that it was mentioned in the developer journal that custom hero was basically the hardest. I can't remember exactly how it was stated. In almost all my games I've played as a custom hero. My general advice is to take some key weaknesses to give yourself more points and then play to the strengths of your character.

you can select easy level for more points.

A few things to make combat easier:

raise your agility and reactions this will help against alot of the attacks

take a stun attack 1 v 1 you are alot harder to beat now

get causes dizziness (i believe its the cheapest lower attackers seed roll)

A compromise that I like (and have played as most) is the "back story" game mode. Some of them yield surprisingly strong heroes and you can mostly customize them from there. A couple of gotchas: some of them aren't so good and you're stuck unless you want to try to roll it up again, and you only start with 5k points on medium level to customize your character.

P.S. I've tried "considered a joke" and survived. Giving the opposition an extra die is no joke, but the 25k points will buy a lot to offset that.

I realized that I could go down to Easy and start off with a much stronger hero, but I was trying to avoid the reduced loss penalties and such. Taking several weaknesses works, and it is what I would have done anyway. But I would agree that the compromise of using a custom backstory seems odd since some of the characters that pop out of that are multiple times stronger than any custom hero could be. Anyway, if it's intended to be that much harder, I will just buckle down for the challenge. Thanks for the advice.

Play around with backstory as mentioned some can be really powerful (alien artifact), some can be really weak (back from the dead) and some can be really fun.

Custom is the hardest difficulty, but allows the most freedom. Not a biggie early on but if you're playing for the long haul, most backstories add several attributes or even some vulnerabilities to your hero. This all eats away at your 10 max attributes so when you get to the end game, you can't buy Master of Energy attacks or Space Flight because your backstory stuck you with Regenerative Powers or Supernatural Control.

If you want a challenge, go with the custom hero. If you want something quick and fun, play around with backstories. If you have a specific hero in mind, I would recommend creating them in the editor and then role play as them. You can always use a custom hero as a baseline if you want to stay "balanced".
