Announcing
The Third Annual
GDS Scummie Awards!
The third year of Mafia in the Dog Pound saw growth, creativity, and elevated levels of play. 2009 was a great year for GDS Mafia and in celebration of all those wasted hours the AMPGDSMF (Academy of Mafia Practitioners in the Grey Dog Software Mafia Forum) is now accepting nominations for the THIRD annual GDS Scummie Awards!
Nominations will remain open until January 15th, 2010. For each category, you may make ONE nomination and/or ONE second to a previously nominated entry. You can do both, one or the other, or neither in any of the available categories. In the case of a large number of nominations, we will use seconds to narrow the field down to a manageable number. Target range for each category (except HOF) is 3-5 nominees. If fewer than three nominees are made for a category when nominations close, the category will be dropped from the ballot.
NOTE: Please remember we are only accepting nominations for all categories at this time. You don't have to do the 5-3-1 allocation for HOF now, just when you send your ballot in to vote. For those that did this already, I will consider your first name your nomination and your next name your second, unless the person has already been nominated, then I will consider it an additional second and go to the third name if need be
No self nominations, please; this means you as an individual or you as the member of a group.

And MLT beat me to opening this thread. For everyone's info, Wallbanger's off to the UK and might not have internet access.
I'd like to ask the MODS for all games to update their first post/players list and post roles in their threads. This will make nominating a lot easier.

NOTE: DO NOT COUNT THIS POST. IT IS JUST MY OPINIONS ON MY GAMES, NOT MY NOMINATIONS.
As a hopeful service to the people who played in my games, here's my attempt at hypothetically nominating people from those games (Outbreak and Oblivion):
Most Strategic Claim:
I think the most strategic claim was bak42 trying for Jyggalag in Oblivion. It didn't work, but it was so good, I felt bad I didn't write the mechanic he claimed into the game. There weren't too many claims in Outbreak. I don't remember if we decided this should be a true claim or not, so ignore this if it has to be.
Best Fake Claim:
Same as above.
Most Shocking Claim:
Not many to be found.
Funniest Roleclaim:
The Infected almost claimed someone that died in the opening of Outbreak, but they didn't. Nothing much here.
Best Role:
I'd have to be picking my own creations here, but I liked The Tank. None of my roles that were intricate really came into play, but at least the Tank was something to be feared.
Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1):
I can't say from just my 2 games.
BIP-Town:
Astil as the forensic investigator type in Outbreak and Prophet as Chris Redfield.
BIP-Mafia:
SuperOwens as The Tank
BIP-Cult:
Mythic Dawn is technically a cult, but no individual things to note in my games.
BIP-Mason:
Gonvick as Louis... He found his 3 survivor mates in 3 night phases... That's simply amazing.
BIP-Losing Effort:
This is definitely Prophet in Outbreak. He was a step away from victory. ShadowedFlames gets honorable mention as he was right there towards the end too.
Best Group:
I'd like to say Mythic Dawn, seeing as they won their game with 10 remaining players, but that was mostly a losing town effort. The Infected did well.
Best Discussion:
masterded was the resident expert on zombies during he beginning of Outbreak, so let's say him.
Best Scum Catcher:
I honestly can't narrow it down to anyone specific.
Best Serial Killer:
Rev, hands down. He won a game... as a serial killer...
Funniest Player:
Machinesxe as the Emperor-in-waiting in Oblivion. He played his priest character in character without seeming to notice or care that he was publicly flaunting the fact he was the most important character in the game and possibly to key to the town's success. (And was also vulnerable... and the beloved princess...)
Most Prolific:
Can't say in 2 games...
Most Enjoyable Game:
I think Outbreak went better than Oblivion
Best Night Scene:
I'd seriously like to put the end of Outbreak out there. It literally came down to a vigilante vs. a serial killer and it was only decided by one clause in the SK's role. It doesn't get any better than a 1 on 1 for the finish.
Best Overall Writeups:
The Outbreak had the Tank's ape-spaz moments, the final write-up, random mid-day moments... It was better than Oblivion at least.
Most Improved:
Can't say...
Best Moderator:
Umm... Kind of unfair in this situation...
Most Dramatic Moment:
The end of Outbreak
Rookie of the Year:
Can't say
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:
Ingrid Hunnigan trying to become the Tank's contact in Outbreak... It wasn't really a failed tactic so much as an unfortunate result, but still... Also, MNN randomly boom-shotting a photographer.
Most Underrated:
Can't say much here.
Hall of Fame:
Irrelevant.

Its still there. I would assume that it could be true or fake. As in any game you play strategy plays a part.

Unofficial
In past years I recall a special discussion thread before the official nominations began. Since that isn't here, I'll do as MJ has done and post noms from the SIN game. I'll make an official vote after more people have made suggestions. I missed quite a few games this year with personal stuff, so to be fair, I am relying on others to point out stuff for me to read up on.
Best Fake Claim:
There were several instances of scum making claims in this game that came back to bite them. Banger would eventually be lynched after being caught in a lie, but his claim of being a Cardsharp was just nebulous enough to hide all the truly whacky abilities he released on the town.
Funniest Roleclaim:
Shadowedflames, claiming to be a survivor from another game.
Best Role:
Tie between Pride and Greed. I liked alot of the roles we made for this game, but these two worked well on their own or together. Basically, Greed could steal votes every day, and save them up to use whenever he liked in whatever allotments he wanted. Pride could take players who voted on him and use them as killers, with a one shot ability to have them stand in and be lynched for him if need be. Combine the two and Townie Player X, could have his vote stolen by Greed, assigned secretly on Pride, and Pride could then turn Player X into a killer. This sort of combination can play havoc with Watchers/Trackers/and CSI roles. Unfortuantely all those townie roles were dead by the time Wallbanger really began to use the stand in killer.
BIP-Town:
Tough choice here. Outlaw basically laid out who all was scum on day 9, but he died that night phase before he could pursue it further. Glotnot and especially the Archer were good at following up what Outlaw laid out. And while that may make Outlaw's nomination seem obvious, it was The Archer who began the long process of breaking down Wallbanger's story and exposing him as a liar, with Glotnot adding in the final nail to the coffin. So really, a tough choice imo.
BIP-Mafia:
Have to go with Wallbanger here. To the very end he kept fighting and kept some people guessing to the point that he was, ultimately, one vote away from winning the game.
BIP-Cult:
Cults suck.
BIP-Mason:
The Carter Family was a mini Mason group with a Shared town alignment. Of the three, I felt Bak42 as Dan Carter made the biggest move by killing Greed on his own. Unfortunately, by then The Two knew that Bak was a Law Enforcement type, so he killed him the same night.
BIP-Losing Effort:
Treton. Reading the requirement for the reward I am not exactly sure this qualifies. But, if anyone wants to go back and look at it, the day Treton is lynched, there's a slip up, and the scum group realizes that they are in a predicament. Treton skillfully calls additional attention to himself to get lynched, because in this situation, his being lynched will produce the best result for his group. So, he plays it out in such a way that the scum are able to trigger a mass killing event based on his death, and while suspicions lingered afterwards, the town never really knew for certain that they had been set up.
Best Group:
Gotta go with the group that won, The Town of Sllverton. If you just give a cursory look at the lynch/mislynch ratio the Town doesn't look that strong as, say, compared to the town in the Sunnydale game. But the explanation for part of this is that the main Mafia group was blessed with quite a few respected players, and they possessed several abilities to cause the town to mislynch people. Couple this with two lynch bait roles, and you start the understand how the town could mislynch as many people as it did.
Best Discussion:
Gotta go with Derek B for this thread
http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60632
Best Scum Catcher:
Can't really credit anyone here. Several scum were killed by SK's, while the SK's either died from bombs or were killed by scum. I think two of the scum lynches came after scum messed up their own stories which helped them to be lynched. This isn't against the town players, as the game was designed to be "dark' and thus tough to figure out. I guess that Outlaw's work on Day nine would be example of laying the groundwork for rooting out scum, but I have to note, even then, Day Nine ended in a no lynch.
Best Serial Killer:
djthefunkchris. Game had two SK's (at seperate times) While Lprock's play seemed chaotic, after Dj turned to the darkside he was very efficient in targetting those he saw as a threat.
Best Night Scene:
Doh! A lot of folks told me they liked the writing in this game, and there seemed to be several scenes in particular that were popular with people. Here I'm just going to suggest my own favorite, which was Night 0, it set the tone for the game perfectly and included a lot of subtle little hints you don't always see in opening write ups anymore.
http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showpost.php?p=582208&postcount=3
Most Dramatic Moment:
Two that really stand out in this game. The first is after Treton dies and Wrath/Crychon goes on his killing spree. Something else I miss from recent games is the big "event" styled scenes that basically cause players to ask 'WTF just happened?" and finally, of course, the final vote on Wallbanger. I can tell you that us mods as well as several players (who had died before and knew what the deal was) were all tensed up as votes went one way, then switched, then switched back again. Honestly, how many times will you see a game come down to one vote, much less on the scum group's original Don? I couldn't have written a better ending had I tried.
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:
Shadowded outting himself. The way his role was presented, and the way Wallbanger had used him to kill someone else, it was reasonable for him to think that there was a cult. Just in presenting that information he had to claim, and in so doing lead to him being mislynched for telling the truth and trying to help the town. IMO, it is probably the worst situation that can happen in a Mafia game (I myself hated it when it nearly happened to me). I have since apologized to Shadow for the way it was done. But, in this instance, it certainly qualifies.
Most Underrated:
The Two. He met his win condition and survived without ever casting much suspicion on himself.

I'm too lazy to do it for myself (I'm heading out in a moment :p), but if someone could make a quick vote form type thing with just the categories/no description then that would make nominating much easier for some.
I've got some notes for some nominations but it's not very complete yet. I'll be having a think and posting my nominations later on probably, though I'll be editing them as I remember things too. I get the feeling that compiling a list here isn't going to be easy. :)

MJDGoldeneye claiming SORA in Final Fantasy. The worst fake claim ever, no matter what MJD thinks, but funny as hell.
I accept that is was bad, but it wasn't the worst. People considered it, actually thought Ansem might be in the game, and I may have survived for a while, but I think that was the game Sean McFly claimed to have investigated me with me coming up scum when he never even targeted me. Sora was semi-feasible to pretty much everyone that wasn't a FF purist and it was after the untrue revelation that things went down fast. I had no chance of surviving, but some people actually took a second to think about it. My lynch certainly wasn't because of the claim alone.
Liquid Man was worse. I wouldn't have believed that one.
If you don't agree with that, then I'll raise you Destiny's claim in Power Rangers of:
Anti-Putty, Angel Grove Aligned Fallen Red Ranger[/b]
It was formatted like that which adds to the awfulness. Why was it awful? The character was completely made up! No such character ever existed!
Sora spent a large portion of his games working with Final Fantasy characters. They were key to the plot. There was a sort of a connection.
Anti-Putty never existed even in the Power Rangers universe.
The rules of sense suggests vaguely relevant connection > made up and blatantly fake sounding.
Now, don't be offended, Destiny, you weren't in a very good position, and we all make mistakes (see: Sora, Liquid Man), but my claim wasn't the worst ever even if you just look at clearly quantifiable reasons (opinions unnecessary).
But... yea... The nomination is cordially accepted. This rant is removed from the funniness as I expect many a FF fan to scoff at my actions.

I have a question... Why do we have a best individual performance for everything under the sun and then just "best group"?

THIS:
This has to be posts #3513 to #3530 (http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?p=655477#post655477) of Power Rangers. I had already died, and the Rangers were trying to clean up for the win. Someone had the idea of using a two-way, one-shot message to fish for the remaining scum. The guys had narrowed down the scum and took a chance, sending a message to Mr. T claiming it was from DWW trying to forge a scum bond. T took the bait publicly, 'Banger said some badass stuff, and Rita Repulsa was killed by the mighty Power Ranger fury.
Epic win.

Yep, even though it was short-lived my run in CV2, it still took up quite a lot of time keeping up to date before and after my death. So I decided that I didn't have the time to constantly put in that amount of effort (as if I play I want to properly play).
But then it drew me back in. For some reason I read along to Power Rangers and FF, and I knew I had to throw my hat back into the ring. If only so I could get a win to my name.
Which still hasn't happened yet. And I still don't think I've had a good game, whereas I have had a couple of bad games (MeMe being the worst, and I don't think I really helped my scum group in either Outbreak or Buffy).

PraguePride for 'Most Improved' or 'Most Underrated' is an interesting pick. Granted, I perhaps pay more attention to him than most because he constantly seems to be trying to string me up, but I gained a lot of respect for him while Co-Modding Sunnydale. He's definitely using more of his brain than folks give him credit for, and he definitely uses every card at his disposal, that's for sure.
I doubt I'll do full-blown nominations, unless by chance the wind of fate make the mood strike me. It's tricky to nominate others, because when playing I'm usually completely focussed on me, my team, and whatever PraguePride's multi-quoting about me.

Following in MJ's footsteps, these are all unoffical. Just trying to stir up some discussion and get some ideas from people.
Most Strategic Claim:
Blackphoenix in Simpsons Mafia. IIRC, she played her cards close, didn't claim until it meant that scum would avoid her and the town would look elsewhere and survived the game.
Best Fake Claim:
It wasn't an outright claim, but Eayragt's hints at being Dawn in Sunnydale were subtle enough for the real Dawn and Buffy to miss them.
Most Shocking Claim:
Arrows in the Simpsons Game. Claiming to be an inanimate object following a string of funky claims from the year before should have spelled instant doom. But he made it work.
Funniest Roleclaim:
Nothing comes to mind
Best Role:
Looking for suggestions
Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1):
Cbot is the obvious nom, so obvious that I will suggest someone else I think spent a good bit of time dying early in several games... Gruntmark
BIP-Town:
Jman in Sunnydale. Nearly half the lynches are results of his investigations.
BIP-Mafia:
IER in Character Creation mafia. Survived some serious suspicion early on to use his ability to protect a rival player from the SK, thereby cementing his fake townie status with the remaining players. He used that to help mislynch several people and win the game for his group.
BIP-Cult:
Astil in Sci Fi Chaos. Convinced most folks that him having a nuclear bomb was a good idea
BIP-Mason:
Probably one of the power ranger group. Would like some of those to suggest who they thought was best.
BIP-Losing Effort:
I can't nominate from the Sin game, so I'm open to suggestions
Best Group:
Several off the top of my head. The town from Sunnydale, the Mafias from Scrubs and Character Creation.
Best Discussion:
Outside of Derek B's thread for mods, I'm open for suggestions
Best Scum Catcher:

Best Serial Killer:
Rev
Most Enjoyable Game:
Entirely subjective, I had the most fun playing Character Creation Mafia though
Best Night Scene: andBest Overall Writeups:
Honestly, I feel quite strongly about Rev, DWW and my writing in the SIN game. But I can't nominate it, so I am open to suggestions.
Most Improved:
MLT. Started the year getting scorned by some players here. Finished out doing pretty strongly imo.
Best Moderator:
DWW for Character Creation. Made a creative and original game that I thought was balanced well. Wrote concise write ups which fit with roles people had and handled things on time.
Most Dramatic Moment:
open to suggestions
Rookie of the Year:
The Two. Survived and won SIN and Survived Sunnydale with a role that scum probably wanted dead, whilst doing a good job picking targets to protect.
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:
The moment in Power Rangers when , I think it was SuperOwens, outted himself and tried to unite all the evil players to control the day phase, only to get lynched for his trouble.
Most Underrated:
Both Comradebot and Gruntmark strike me as two very good players who sometimes just have bad luck.
Hall of Fame:

My three picks would Imarevenant, IER, and mjgoldeneye.

IER in Character Creation mafia. Survived some serious suspicion early on to use his ability to protect a rival player from the SK, thereby cementing his fake townie status with the remaining players. He used that to help mislynch several people and win the game for his group.
He was an early target of suspicion and I bought his explanation. He seemed legitimately honest. This will probably be my second.
BIP-Mason:
Probably one of the power ranger group. Would like some of those to suggest who they thought was best.
I nominated 'Banger for town, so I'd say Slim Jim. I'm not entirely sure, so one of the others will have to remember, but I believe he was the one that came up with the idea for the message gambit that outed Rita. That was great.
BIP-Losing Effort:
I can't nominate from the Sin game, so I'm open to suggestions
I am pretty sure you can. As long as you're not nominating your own performance or creative ideas, it's fine. Who better than the mod to know a good effort?
Best Group:
Several off the top of my head. The town from Sunnydale, the Mafias from Scrubs and Character Creation.
Don't forget us Power Rangers!
And, I can't agree with the Sunnydale thing just because you completely skipped over the point of my final posts even when I was telling the truth. Everything I said was true and you thought I was trying to get you and 'Banger lynched... WTF? (I was pointing out that ya'll needed to be accounted for. I had no recollection of who had and had not claimed or given info or any of the above.) Arrows even came up scum days after I warned you all to take care of him! I say fooey and poppyc0ck!

You won at least.
Best Discussion:

ShadowedFlames' List of nominations: 2009 Scummies
Most Strategic Claim: TBD
Best Fake Claim: I said it early on, but it bears repeating. Mjdgoldeneye as Sora in Final Fantasy. It may not have worked, but it was a gutsy call.
Most Shocking Claim: Arrows as Inanimate Carbon Rod, Mafia: Springfield Under Siege.
Funniest Roleclaim: TBD
Best Role: TBD
The Panix Award: moon_lit_tears because she talks WAY too much for any decent scum to keep her alive... :p
Best Individual Performance—Town: TBD
Best Individual Performance—Mafia: Wallbanger in SIN.
Best Individual Performance—Cult: TBD
Best Individual Performance—Mason: Self as part of the Gullwings, Final Fantasy Mafia.
Best Individual Performance—Losing Effort: Praguepride in Outbreak. He and I nearly had the game won if not for the SK.
Best Group: TBD
Best Discussion: Derek_b.
Best Scum Catcher: TBD
Best Serial Killer: Imarevenant. I thought I had this award locked up until he came along....
Funniest Player: I'll go with The Two for starting the whole "Night Spaghetti" business.
Most Prolific: moon_lit_tears
Most Enjoyable Game: Simpsons Mafia: Springfield Under Siege. (Why not SIN? Because SIN was too cerebral to be enjoyed, in my opinion—it had to be something one experienced.)
Best Night Scene: TBD
Best Overall Write-ups: This one I have to give to SIN.
Most Improved: Hmmm. I'll nominate Tha Black Phenom for this one.
Best Moderator: Antithesis, if only because he apologized for the whole "John Doe from E-Ville" fiasco. :p All kidding aside, good write-ups, not a lot of waiting at end of phases, and a firm grasp of the mechanics give him my nod.
Most Dramatic Moment: The 10-minute Night Phase in Simpsons Mafia: Springfield Under Siege. I remember seeing the reactions when phase ended as quick as it began, and knew it would be something people would remember.
Rookie of the year: I'd have to go with Jaded and MLT.
Best Botch / "It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time" Award: Trusting Astil in Sci-Fi Chaos Mafia. Honorable Mention: Undertaker666 for his "moon_lit_teats" comment. :p
Most Underrated: Hard to say. I think everyone's developed their own persona in here.

NOTE: All of these are placeholders, I'll post a full list at a later time.
Most Strategic Claim:
--This category is to recognize the most strategic claim made.
Best Fake Claim:
--This category is to recognize the best fake claim made in a game. (PLACEHOLDER/SELF PIMPING: Myself, claiming Louis from Ghostbusters in Destroy All Monsters. Nobody suspected a thing ;))
Most Shocking Claim:
--This category is to recognize the most shocking claim made during a game.
Funniest Roleclaim:
--This category is to recognize the funniest/most entertaining roleclaim in a single game, regardless of game impact.
Best Role:
--This category is to recognize well-crafted roles in a single mafia game. Remember the award is for the ROLE, not the PLAYER. A well crafted role played poorly should not be penalized in this category.
Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1):
I'm gonna second UFC KING, for pretty much never showing up to play games ever. If it was NIGHT 1 I'd go for Comradebot, but DAY 1 it's pretty much standard for it to be UFC KING. :)
BIP-Town:
--This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing a town-aligned character in a single game.
BIP-Mafia:
Since I've been part of almost every mafia ever, I'm gonna nom/second the scum team from Character Creation. They were good, especially IER who is a top notch player and who I seem to remember being on that team. Hopefully. :D
BIP-Cult:
--This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing a cult-aligned character in a single game.
PLACEHOLDER: Ivalice were a cult, right? :p
BIP-Mason:
Gotta give this to the Gullwings in Final Fantasy, specifically Self who was leading from the front all the time. He gave away a few little things but he played an awesome game.
BIP-Losing Effort:
--I'm gonna nominate me, for almost every time I'm scum. (PLACEHOLDER!)
Best Group:
--This category is to recognize outstanding group performance in a single game regardless of alignment. "The town" is considered a group for purposes of this category.
Best Discussion:
--This category is to recognize individual players whose overall quality of discussion contributes to the enjoyment of the game for all players over the course of the year.
Best Scum Catcher:
--This category is to recognize players who have a knack for identifying mafia and successfully eliminating them from play over the course of the year.
Best Serial Killer:
Even though it's probably a given for who is going to win this one, I'd like to add a nomination for whoever was Freddy Krueger in Sci-Fi Chaos. My memory fails me now but they racked up an impressive list of kills.
Funniest Player:
--This category is to recognize the funniest/most entertaining player overall over the course of the year.
Most Prolific:
--This category is to recognize the player who has generated the most quality participation over the course of the year. This should not be considered a 'post-whore' award, it is for consistent, meaningful participation in the GDS mafia community over the course of the year.
Most Enjoyable Game:
I really enjoyed Destroy All Monsters as it was the first game on here to use an area concept... I've got an entire ruleset in my head for a Battle Royale mafia thanks to that game, but I'd never run it as I want to play it too much. It was a very enjoyable game, so DAM gets my vote.
Best Night Scene:
Can't remember what night it was, but the night where everything went to hell in Sin was an awesome one.
Best Overall Writeups:
It's a tough call on this one as I want to vote for Final Fantasy AND Sin. Both had excellent write ups and were great, so I'm going to see who votes for either and make sure they both get on the ballot. :)
Most Improved:
--This category is to recognize a player who has made considerable strides in his play throughout the year.
Best Moderator:
I'll definitely be nominating ShadowedFlames for Final Fantasy. While the game setup could probably have done with some tweaking, the actual modding was fantastic from start to finish.
Most Dramatic Moment:
--This category recognizes outstanding dramatic moments in game due to the players' interaction, shift in game momentum and/or the invocation of abilities to create a swerve.
PLACEHOLDER: Just a story here really cos it stands out for me... when I was mislynched in Sin, it was kinda intentional. Knowing I'd be lynched at 1/3 votes and that I was a bomb, I talked my way to a point where the lynch had stalled and really needed a scum type to step up and vote. Wallbanger (the DON!) did but a unique ability made me kill someone else. That was pretty dang dramatic from my point of view, even though it doesn't really qualify. But it was cool, if only because my plan kinda worked. :)
Rookie of the Year:
I'm gonna go with The Two. I know I live with him, but he's shown himself to be a good player when he has the time. I nag him constantly to try and get him to post more but he just keeps saying that if he can't add anything then he won't post.
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:
Awww... the wording for this one has changed what I was gonna say here. I definitely want to add a nom for MJD's claim in Final Fantasy, I remember it being almost needless and totally outwith the actual theme of the game. It was terrible, and especially sticks out because MJD refuses to accept that it was terrible. :p
Otherwise I'd nominate Moon Lit Teats for autolynching someone (me :p) with the worst logic ever. It got the right result and won the game for the town but the logic was totally botched. That's like a best botch, right?
Most Underrated:
--This category is to recognize up-and-coming players who have had multiple high quality performances, yet seems not to be well known within the mafia community.
Hall of Fame:
Hi... I'm Derek B and I'd like to be admitted into your hall this year. :)

I definitely want to add a nom for MJD's claim in Final Fantasy, I remember it being almost needless and totally outwith the actual theme of the game. It was terrible, and especially sticks out because MJD refuses to accept that it was terrible. :p
Untrue. I am aware it was bad. I just don't think it is notably bad coming from me. If you take note of what I was working with, the ceiling for potential success wasn't very high.
I definitely disagree with it being needless. I had to do something and I had no options. I was don of a 3 person mafia with an usurper on one side and Machinesxe on the other.
I saw an opportunity to throw the town some information and the fact that it wasn't pressured made it slightly more plausible. Why would I claim something like that at that point if it wasn't true?
The fact was I knew nothing about the subject matter and that was going to be my claim. I had the choice of either a Liquid Man level obscure character I'd have to research to the point of being able to patch together a reasonable fake role for or go with a majorly huge main character from a game that the average non-FF player would accept. The answer was obvious and the only question was whether I should wait for pressure or just go with it then.
I just went and looked at how it went down:
The first 2 people to respond to my claim (D_W_W and Bear) seemingly took it for granted. (D_W_W goes as far as saying he expected me to claim Sora (http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showpost.php?p=631687&postcount=1126).)
The first person to vote on me and the most vocal opponent early on was my usurper.
There was nothing more than below-average doubt before Sean McFly pulled an investigation result out of nowhere. Soon after I died, Arrows informed me that he just made the result up.
He claimed I "came up red" and the 2 posts immediately after his claimed result were people face-palming over his revelation. The third vote was someone voting on Sean McFly because of how loopy his move was.
The subsequent votes, barring trypio and BlueStar (who just didn't buy it), were from Astil calling me out on the semantics of my role title and for actions he later realized I hadn't performed, and Machinesxe who had already died and was on my team.
The fact is, the claim had went down relatively smoothly but completely bizarre randomness (and people voting on the grounds of my "scummy defense", which is a brand new idea to me :p) along with a completely made up investigation immediately after said claim brought me down.
It wasn't a "bad claim, unanimous giggling at the silliness, prompt lynching" like countless other claims here. It went down with a lot more thought than I even remembered!
So... yea... :D The way it went down has been largely misremembered.
EDIT: But, I don't deny the nomination being valid at all. My motto is "It seemed like a good idea at the time".

Just for being scum.
It was a terrible idea all around. The fact that you were so easily taken down by a fake result only highlights it more. Claiming from a game that wasn't Final Fantasy in a game that (I think) had some roles cut from it, with more than a dozen games to choose from... it was suicide from the moment you tried it.
I'm not gonna say you weren't in a bad position and it was a well formulated claim, but it didn't fit in with the theme, came from nowhere and was pulled down by a terrible counter response. That should be enough evidence that the general player base thought it was bad. I thought it was bad at the time (I think I was scum by then) and watching the other scum team crumbling was bad for us since we were gonna lose out on kills that we desperately needed.
Anywho, it may have seemed like a good idea... but it wasn't. It REALLY wasn't, not when you had a lot of Final Fantasy fans playing. It was suicide. :p

That should be enough evidence that the general player base thought it was bad.
But they didn't. And, I wasn't "easily" taken down by a fake result. My lynch was clearly a "best option" lynch, not a "clearly scum" lynch. You can tell by, you know, how a good have of the existing players responded to it initially.
Yes, it was bad, but it wasn't guaranteed instantaneous suicide. Fact: Had Sean McFly not screwed me over, I'd have probably lived to see night phase. (No one was clearly against my claim until McFly popped in!!!) I had no hope of winning and only a marginal chance of making through even another day, but compare to claims like Happy-Friends Megatron, Anti-Putty, Liquid Man, and so on.
That claim was definitely of the "Unlikely, Worth Lynching" variety and NOT the "Ha ha ha, no way, LYNCH" variety. That much can clearly be drawn from how it was responded to. Note that it took a whole lot to start the wagon moving. Once it started, I was dead, and I knew that would be the case, but I was in a position where if someone else seemed notably scummy and I had not come up scum in an investigation that no one had clear reasons to simply ignore, I had a chance to slip by for a bit. That's the key here. It was bad, I had no chance in the long run, but people legitimately considered it worth tabling until further notice.
Compare to the various "lynch simply for the audacity" examples where anything other than immediate death would be insulting. :p
And, how could I have deflected an investigation result when people bought it despite it's silliness and when it was completely made up? It was like when PP claimed to have gotten a radio message about Arrows. Arrows had no chance because PP's revelation was a straight-up vacuum-sealed lie!
The claim didn't directly lead to my lynching that day. The claim facilitated a BS investigation claim that killed me much more quickly than I'd expected.
Had I not claimed, I had Librarian's incessant finger pointing and my then glowing reputation to contend with. It's not like keeping quiet would have bought be days of time to work with...
I was done regardless. What other options would a non-FF player like me have in that situation? What would you have done, Derek? I crashed and burned, so as I said, all nominations graciously deserved. But, to say what I did was a terrible idea to begin with is simply wrong unless you can devise an alternative course of action that would have had even a marginally higher potential success rate. ALL of my options were terrible so relatively speaking I did just fine. :D (Worth noting: Every FF character I temporary considered claiming ended up being in the game.)

PraguePride for 'Most Improved' or 'Most Underrated' is an interesting pick.
Interesting, now why would you say something like that? scum!
That's because you're too good at convincing people you're town. Even the mods are convinced so they keep giving you blue roles when you're real role is RED!!!!
I doubt I'll do full-blown nominations, unless by chance the wind of fate make the mood strike me.
Oh, I get it, you're just sitting back and seeing which way the bandwagon rolls before making a decision, eh? Mr. Scummy McScummerton

Funniest Roleclaim:

Best Role:

What?
What I said was every character I looked at and thought might be a decent claim ended up actually being another player's character.
I have no idea who Barrett is and I don't remember who I considered claiming.
Take note that my entire FF knowledge is limited to VII (which kind of comes in the video game nerd package of necessary knowledge) and the guys that made appearances in Kingdom Hearts.
I had no way of knowing how major characters were or how notable they were as far as how likely they were to be included in a mafia game. All I knew was the basic information the wikis shared with me and I had no easy way of figuring out what to do.

You obviously didn't read my posts or have chosen to give them a meaning I never intended. This is the end of my time in Sunnydale all over again. All of my posts about FF in here have nothing to do with Scummie nominations.
As I've already said I graciously accept your nominations as the event fits the categories. If there was a "worst claim" category, I'd try to disqualify myself, though, because if you can put yourself in my shoes and actually follow the phase in question, you'd see things a different way.
Judging by your smug comment related to a character or person I've never heard of, perhaps you can't see what I was dealing with being as difficult as it was.

Most Strategic Claim:
Derek B's claim of being a Forensic Scientist in Scrubs. When he should have been lynched or a the very least not trusted, he was able to make a false claim and lead the deciding mis-lynch (even though the write-ups heavily pointed to him being Dr. Cox).
Best Fake Claim:
Still thinking Wallbangers was great in SIN.
Most Shocking Claim:
Not Sure
Funniest Roleclaim:
I guess I'm alone in thinking Sora was a viable lynch bait type role that could have been a real role in the Final Fantasy game. It's not nearly as terrible as Liquid Man :p
Best Role:
SIN has a lot of just great roles, sadly I can't nominate them though.
Maybe because it was my role but the Rage zombie was a good role as well. I know some think it was overpowered but as an SK with the win condition to actually be the last man standing you need to have some teeth. And this role provided that while keeping me completely vulnerable to being lynched at the end game.
Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1):
Shigaki; one of them sign up no shows every game
BIP-Town:
Self in FF, Anti anytime he's town, DB until he inevitably gets recruited. Arrows as the PGO in Southpark. Have to think on this one lol
BIP-Mafia:
DWW had a pretty good game in Power Rangers. And the mafias in Scrubs and Character Creation were real real good. Tough one to choose atm.
Sorry, but I also have to pimp myself in Transformers lol (Don't forget about the earlier games people)
BIP-Cult:
I'm going with Mr. T for Springfield here. He fought the town off for quite a while, well working against us as mayor.
BIP-Mason:

BIP-Losing Effort:
Need to think on this one. DWW in Power Rangers, Wallbanger in Sin, Gonvick in Transformers. A lot to choose from.

Funniest Player:

Most Enjoyable Game:

Best Night Scene:
Like Anti, I like the night 0 write up from SIN but can't nominate it. I'll have to browse through the games more thouroughly for this.
Best Overall Writeups:
Can't nominate Sin, and although I thought the Sunnydale write-ups were good I think they gave away just a little too much.
So I'm going to nominate Ashburg, as I thought the writing for the game was great.
Most Improved:
I'll second the MLT nomination and nominate Destiny. I think Destiny is a much much improved player than he was when he came in during the Eville game and couldn't remember what his own Role PM said :p
Best Moderator:
Shadowed Flames as I think the FF game was one of the top moderated games played this year.
Most Dramatic Moment:

Rookie of the Year:
For me it's Gabbo who started in the Springfield game. He's someone I listen too when he's town and someone I fear when he's scum, can't ask for much more than that.

This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing a cult-aligned character in a single game.
Not sure here.
BIP-Mason:
This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing characters with individual or special alignments in a single game.
Description includes indies so maybe the title should too, on which basis I’m saying blackphoenix in Springfield.
BIP-Losing Effort:
this category is to recognize the best effort made in a losing situation.
Shrug.
Best Group:
This category is to recognize outstanding group performance in a single game regardless of alignment. "The town" is considered a group for purposes of this category.
I’ll say the mafia in oblivion....absolutely owned us.
Best Discussion:
This category is to recognize individual players whose overall quality of discussion contributes to the enjoyment of the game for all players over the course of the year.
I’ll go for BlueStar here.
Best Scum Catcher:
This category is to recognize players who have a knack for identifying mafia and successfully eliminating them from play over the course of the year.
The Archer just has a nose for it lol
Best Serial Killer:
This category is to recognize the most effective performance by a serial killer, cannibal, and/or psychopath in a single game. Both high body count and fear struck in the hearts of players should be taken into account in this category.
Will second Slim as Chuck Norris.
Funniest Player:
This category is to recognize the funniest/most entertaining player overall over the course of the year.
There are certain people who’s approach I just enjoy...one of whom is derek. So I’ll go for him.
Most Prolific:
This category is to recognize the player who has generated the most quality participation over the course of the year. This should not be considered a 'post-whore' award, it is for consistent, meaningful participation in the GDS mafia community over the course of the year.
Not really sure I’ll vote on this one having been very in and out all year.
Most Enjoyable Game:
What was your favorite game in 2009?
Outbreak....shortly followed by character creation.
Best Night Scene:
This category is to recognize an outstanding writeup for a night scene in a single game. Both composition and game impact should be taken into consideration.
Nothing at all stands out.
Best Overall Writeups:
This category is to recognize the overall writing of lynches, night scenes and special events for a single game. Composition, game impact, consistency of style, and the overall storytelling of the collective game writeups should be taken into consideration.
I’ll go for SIN here. There was a lot about that game that I didn’t particularly enjoy, but I can’t deny the writeups at least made it interesting, even if a lot of it was very overdone. And with it being the done thing I might as well plug Springfield here :P....as Sideshow Bob’s modkill is something I enjoyed writing more than anything I’ve enjoyed reading lol...
Most Improved:
This category is to recognize a player who has made considerable strides in his play throughout the year.
Second moonlittears, came a long way after the Sideshow Bob outburst haha.
Best Moderator:
This category is to recognize a moderator who has achieved distinctive excellence in scenario design, game balancing, entertaining writeups and adjudication of issues.
Seconding DWW.
Most Dramatic Moment:
This category recognizes outstanding dramatic moments in game due to the players' interaction, shift in game momentum and/or the invocation of abilities to create a swerve.
I really want to go for some Springfield stuff here, not sure exactly what though.
Rookie of the Year:
This category recognizes outstanding contributions to the game by a new player. For purposes of this award, a 'rookie' is defined as a player who played and completed their FIRST GDS mafia game in calendar year 2009.
I saw someone mention Archer here but I thought he’d been around longer? If not then him for sure. In fact no, he was definitely in Lakeside. So I’ll plump for Gabbo :P
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:
Also referred to as 'Best Botch', this category is for recognizing the most memorable moment where a particular player choice/action/statement doesn't go exactly the way it was meant to.
Something that simply HAS to be mentioned here is Aussie, Johnny Tightlips in Springfield, claiming a character with huge mafia affiliations in Frankie the Squealer when his ability meant he could have died and come up as any member of the town had he chose to...
Most Underrated:
This category is to recognize up-and-coming players who have had multiple high quality performances, yet seems not to be well known within the mafia community.
Interesting description on this award...on which basis I’ll go for The Black Phenom.
Hall of Fame:
This category is to induct the initial members of the GDS Mafia Hall of Fame, recognizing outstanding overall performance, community spirit, and honorable play. This category will be conducted with a weighted vote system. Vote for three (3) nominees, assigning your top choice five (5) points, your second choice three (3) points, and your third choice one (1) point. A minimum of three nominees will be inducted; additional inductees may be chosen based on overall score.
Who’s in it? I’ll throw one out for masterded, he’s been around forever and is always a very good player.

Funniest Roleclaim:
I guess I'm alone in thinking Sora was a viable lynch bait type role that could have been a real role in the Final Fantasy game. It's not nearly as terrible as Liquid Man :p
Thank you... As long as there's at least one person out there on crazy island with me, it's all good. :p
EDIT: It'll be funny if I end up being officially nominated for "Best Fake Claim", "Funniest Claim", and the "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time Award"

Only been back following Mafia since May, so apologies to anything before that. As such there are a few categories I can't think of anything for - apologies to all out there who should be nominated! And if I'm nominating people who have already been nominated - blame that on all the placeholders.
Most Strategic Claim:
Realy can't think of one. So I'll just go for Astil from Outbreak, for claiming before possibly hammering the bomb - in a dark game it was a sensible thing for a townie to do, but others could have forgotten.
Best Fake Claim:
Midnightnick in Sci-Fi Chaos. Had most people convinced he wasn't killing anyone in their dreams.
Most Shocking Claim:
Funniest Roleclaim:
Nope, can't think of one. Sorry.
Best Role:
Praguepride as... quite a few people in Sci-Fi Chaos. The role caused a lot of chaos, but seemed pretty fair.
Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1):
Second: Comradebot
BIP-Town:
Second: Antithesis in Sunnydale mafia. Even though I shut him up for most of the game.
BIP-Mafia:
GruntMark in Scrubs
BIP-Cult:
Don't talk to me about Cults!
BIP-Mason:
Jaded in FF. That game would have been very different without him.
BIP-Losing Effort:
SuperOwens in Outbreak
Second: Prophet in Outbreak
Best Group:
Mafia in Scrubs
Best Discussion:
Self.
Best Scum Catcher:
GruntMark
Best Serial Killer:
Second: Midnightnick as Freddy Kreuger in SFC
Funniest Player:
Second: Astil
Most Prolific:
Being around for only half the year makes me ill qualified for nominating here.
Most Enjoyable Game:
I wish I could have lived longer than 1 day in Character Creation, so I'll have to go for Outbreak instead.
Best Night Scene:
Haven't got one here.
Best Overall Writeups:
Second: Dust. I know there was a little slip at the end, but it was accidental and Wallbanger read a little too much into it.
Most Improved:
(Igonring a Character Creation blip) Praguepride. Shows really good instinct for scum. Now needs to learn that he doesn't need to make up a fake threat result every game, otherwise scum can just ignore it, knowing that he makes up results (a la Cyberkitten in Buffy). Casting suspicions can be enough for another player to get the result that puts the nail in said scums coffin (a la Jman's result on Cyberkitten in Buffy)
Best Moderator:
Astil
Most Dramatic Moment:
Second: The message in Power Rangers
Rookie of the Year:
Second: Jaded
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:

Can someone explain/link to an explanation of that role in SFC, the crazy one? I stopped following that game as it all got a bit too much but I remember thinking it was one of the most ridiculous I'd ever seen based on what was being claimed xD
I started out as
Dr. Sam Beckett, the quantum leaper.
Ability: Immune to Death & Lynches IF I helped lynch scum.
Win Condition: Typical townie
then when I "died" I leaped into Wilma Deering
Ability: Protect 1 person at night
Win Condition: Astil must survive until Night...11 I believe
then when that goal was accomplished I leaped into Captain Picard
Ability: Can steal the items off 1 person and give them to Astil
Win Condition: Win when Astil successfully defuses the nuke (or something like that).
To add to that, each night Ziggy & Al would give me information. For the most part it was pretty useless (i.e. there was more then one scum group in the game on N1 I think) but most of it was centered around me figuring out my missions (like during Wilma Deering I didn't know I had to keep Astil alive till night 11, just that I had to keep him alive to finish his mission. Ziggy eventually told me that it woudl be done Night 11). Finally, Astil somehow hacked Ziggy and shut him down so he spouted off pure gibberish. By the end he was just spouting off about "the worm has turned" which was a clue that he had been sabotaged, but I had no clue how or who so I just proceeded as normal.
It was hella fun. Especially because everyone thought I was immune to death when I had already used up my one freebie :D

In Ashburg Beaver Cleaver should get town MVP for taking out the Don N1 :D
Although that goes more into the "It seemed like a good idea..." category where instead of just having TBP protect me, I had him switch me and Rev (of all people, a good player bound to be targetted for something...)
I really don't know what we were thinking or the rationale behind it but it ended up killing the don N1 and outing the SK for D2 lynch resulting in no deaths N2

Sora has never been in a Final Fantasy game. Kingdom Hearts is in theme and at its heart a Final Fantasy game, but it really isn't.
The fact is, I had the choice of wither away and then try claiming Sora or randomly claim Sora when it was too random to be fake. I claimed pretty strong powers and my role up to that point backed up the claim.
The point of contention is that I saw it and still see it as a plausible "Unlikely character, useful power" sort of role that the mod would expect the town to not trust.
Sorry if I misinterpret your thoughts, but I believe ShadowedFlames sees it as an ultimately dead-end play that was a risky move with chance for some short-term success. Rev sees it like I do for the most part, without considering the execution. BlueStar and Derek see it as an utterly garbage move.

But, that's way better than Liquid Man, the claim borne from some garbage pit in my mind.

Hey Shape, The Simpsons was one game I began to play but had to leave, so I don't really remember it that well.
Was there any role or roles you felt were great in that game (or could have been had they been used differently) and may want to spotlight?
Uhhm let me think about this. There's nothing I instantly feel has to be included because although I feel like a fair bit of it was nice and original, I tried to give every role something and make sure none of them stood out as being super amazing roles that I would want certain people to have over others. Mainly I altered and combined existing concepts rather than trying to bring in anything entirely new. Stuff like the mafia on the whole, the don's abilities and the differing hit options for Legs and Louie I quite liked, as well as the whole mayor mechanic with Wiggum's responsibilities and the UFOs, which I felt were particularly well balanced as a semi-cult who couldn't go completely unnoticed (they were huge drooling aliens after all). I was gutted that duffman died N1 as he'd have been fun to write up, and Ralph with his pokemon like learning capacity was another thing I enjoyed. Sideshow Bob...well if he'd have become Mayor I'd have loved it, dispatching someone else to kill for him but with a new win condition of control of the town. And I liked the way the masons had to find each other.
So basically, a whole lot of stuff. But if I had to choose I'd probably say Johnny Tightlips, because although the whole dying as someone else thing had I think been done before (star wars comes to mind?) and some people aren't fans of post restrictions, it just suited the character so damn well and would've been so interesting had it been used differently. Then there was Burns...but really I think BP's play made that moreso than the role itself, which was fairly basic. Honestly, my favourite stuff mechanic wise was often not role specific, such as stonecutter recruitment based on voting patterns and the Mayor thing as a whole.
And of course, the Rod. Not because of any original mechanics, but just because of what it was and what it led to =D

Most Strategic Claim:
Thinking about it...
Best Fake Claim:
This category is to recognize the best fake claim made in a game.
Rev fake claiming the main guy from 28 Days Later in Outbreak. Honestly don't remember if I bought it at the time or not, but the few remaining townies sure did.
Most Shocking Claim:
MJDGoldeneye claiming Clark Griswald in Destroy All Monsters, which I'll get back to in just a second...
Funniest Roleclaim:
Can I second Arrows as the ROD? If not, it should win anyways.
Best Role:
The traveling merchant in DUST. He had bull shark testosterone for sell, after all!
Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1):
lprock, simply because that ONE time he made that awful Han Solo claim and now everyone thinks they can rush a lynch on the poor guy.
BIP-Town:
Wallbanger in Power Rangers. Excellent, excellent game for him.
BIP-Mafia:
I believe Rev as Megatron/Galvatron in Transformers counts, even though I'm not fond of that game in the least... (sorry Casey, but at least your diary is awesome!)
BIP-Cult:
Thinking about it...
BIP-Mason:
I'd like to second BP as Burns in Springfield, if possible. Played the Survivor role to perfection, something that isn't easy to do.
BIP-Losing Effort:
Gonvick in Outbreak. Lordy we tried soooo hard to take out those zombies... stupid Boomer ability and how it overrode your protection on me. Sigh...
Best Group:
Thinking about it...
Best Discussion:
PraguePride, but only because it causes so many lulz.
Best Scum Catcher:
Derek_b
Best Serial Killer:
Slim_Jim as Chuck Norris. Lord the town was hopeless in that one... heck, everyone was except for the Cult and Chuck.
Funniest Player:
lprock. Sure, sometimes his silliness loses your scum group the game... but at least its entertaining.
Most Prolific:
Thinking about it...
Most Enjoyable Game:
Hmmm... tough call, but I'll go with Ashburg over Destroy All Monsters. Sure it was short, but the write-ups rocked, my awesome role lived, and heck, I can't help but feel partially responsible for getting the final scum lynched. My ego aside, I really did enjoy the write-ups and appreciated them even more since I had to in order to try and win.
Best Night Scene:
Thinking about it...
Best Overall Writeups:
Again, I'll go with Ashburg. While there weren't many of them, that doesn't change the fact CK had some sublime writing going on.
Most Improved:
Can't believe I'm mentioning him a third time, but... honestly... lprock. He's gone from worthless to actually be worth more alive than dead if he's on your team.
Best Moderator:
Antithesis for SIN, definetly. I'll second that.
Most Dramatic Moment:
derek_b for claiming Doug in Scrubs, when it was so very, very clear that he was Cox... and the town believing it.
Rookie of the Year:
SuperOwens, hands down.
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:
MJDGoldeneye fake claiming Clark Griswald in Destory All Monsters, and claiming that the Griswalds that escaped were the kids and their aunt... who at no point seemed to exist at anytime throughout the course of the game. In fact, both the players and the write-ups suggested just the typical four Griswalds. Alas, MJD went with quite possibly the boldest claim in mafia history... and it didn't work. I'm truly amazed by how good MJD is up until the point he tries to concoct a fake claim. :p
Most Underrated:
GruntMark. How is it he pulled that fantastic fake claim of Mara Jade in SWM2 last year, and yet still manages to be one of the last scum standing frequently. That, and a solid townie to boot.
Hall of Fame:
I'll second Crychon! Man modded Hollywood Horror, the best game I've ever seen on here. That alone means should make him a must.

MJDGoldeneye claiming Clark Griswald in Destroy All Monsters, which I'll get back to in just a second...
THIS! THIS was my worst claim. I hadn't been following all that well and I didn't notice he had escaped the city. I thought the write-up when the family left was a little more vague than it was.
Pretty much anything else would have been better, but, you know... :p
When I'm cornered, it's over. Some fake claims I come up with are moderately decent (the bailiff sort of worked), but most of the time I fail it's because I have a limited pool of options. This claim was just entirely random.
The part where I said it was the aunt came after the fact. My brain broke and I tried so hard to correct for it.
This category should have my namesake.

Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1):
lprock, simply because that ONE time he made that awful Han Solo claim and now everyone thinks they can rush a lynch on the poor guy.
Dude, it seriously wasn't even my idea - and it was my first game. :(
Anyway, I wanna make sure I make some sort of difference in the nomination process, so for now, I'm gonna nominate:
Most Enjoyable Game
Recess Mafia
Super Silliness Mafia
Best Moderator
Tha Black Phenom for Recess Mafia
That game was my favorite of 2009, without a doubt. Even if I didn't win, it was still fun to play every step of the way. Props go out to Phenom for preparing such a fun game Even if it was a shorter game than some of the others, it deserves much more credit than its been given. And if we're allowed to add a 2nd nomination to a category (pretty sure I read we can, if not, just forget about this), I'd like to nominate Super Silliness Mafia as well. It was very close to Recess in the enjoyable category to me, you should be able to tell because both games were able to keep me active during every phase, when usually, I have a problem with remembering to visit this place and participate. :P
Hopefully I'll remember, and have enough time, to come back and fill out every category for the nominations, but just in case, I'm posting these two categories ahead of time.

This category recognizes outstanding dramatic moments in game due to the players' interaction, shift in game momentum and/or the invocation of abilities to create a swerve.
Astil detonating the nuke in Sci-fi Chaos

Southpark is included in this year's games, because last year's awards were run at the same time SP was running.
Speaking of the SP game, I seem to recall Arrows having a strong showing that game. Anyone remember the details on that?

I have to chuckle at the Pet/SK noms... she ruined her own chances at winning by handing over scum so that there was no-one else left to kill. In terms of strategy, she was probably one of the worst SKs of the year... but as a townie performance, it was an amazing one. Though leading a lynch on me while I was silenced is soooo not cool. I've got a lot of people on my hitlist for that still. :)

Most Shocking Claim:

I tend not too. I was aggravated in the Buffy game, thought that had more to do with out of game issues (that everyone was privy too) and then Derek being a meanie to me. :p

We've only had one real big snow so far this year, about 23 inches / 60 cm in the span of a weekend. They've been trying to keep me in the office full-time during these so far this year, so it may not be as bad as previous years. Still not willing to take a chance on that and commit to being a full player during winter yet--though helping Derek mod Pokemon is good enough for me.

Also want to add that I'd wish someone would nominate the town from Sunnydale in best group performance.
Obviously any town aligned members from that game can't do it, and I can understand why many of the scum players in the game could find fault with certain aspects, considering that the town was only lead into one mislynch, and had a large number of survivors at the end, I believe it was one of the most dominant town performances in a large scaled game I can remember. (And I am not just saying that because I was town aligned in that game). Dunno if it should win (several scum groups had very strong games this year) but it should at least get nominated.

First off. Allow me to say that me being nominated for most strategic anything is f'n hilarious.
Second, I don't remember a lot of this year. I will comment on what I do, so most of these may be from my own game, as that’s the one I remember best.
Most Strategic Claim:
I don’t know how much strategy he had going into the claim, but he managed to blindly walk his way through all three stages of his role and fall into the PGO spokesperson role without much effort at all due to blatantly obvious hints. I’ll go with MJD as Tommy Oliver in Power Rangers.
Best Fake Claim:
D_w_w’s survivor claim in Power Rangers. While the little alien buggers name escapes me at the moment, the second he claimed it I got a huge smile on my face. In a game where no survivor had been seen, D_w_w managed to come up with the perfect character to fit the role and sold it all believably.
Most Shocking Claim:
Derek_b claiming stonecutter
Funniest Roleclaim:
Mjdgoldeneye as Sora (seconded x1)
Best Role:
I really can’t decide here.
Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1):
Gotta be UFC.
BIP-Town:
I’m gonna go with Slim Jim from Power Rangers, since Banger’s already in here. That group just played too good together not to include more than one.
BIP-Mafia:
Even if I do narrow this down to just Power Rangers, that’s a toughy. I’d have to go with D_w_w, mainly due to the effective fake claim allowing him to slip by longer.
BIP-Cult:
No clue.
BIP-Mason:
Gonna say Slim Jim from Power Rangers here, as, again, that was a huge group effort, and Slim was every bit as valuable as Banger.
BIP-Losing Effort:
No clue.
Best Group:
Evil Ranger Aligned. Both they and the Evil Aligned stand neck and neck to be honest, but the Evil Ranger aligned stood weaker in the roles, yet survived just as long, and almost pulled out a victory in a game that should’ve been so far unbalanced it would’ve been humiliating.
Best Discussion:
Anti. Anti’s the man.
Best Scum Catcher:
I can’t narrow it down.
Best Serial Killer:
ShadowedFlames from Power Rangers. Despite Rev’s win, I believe he had a far easier path to travel than SF, and SF came VERY close to winning.
Just reading the above made me keep it and agree.
Most Prolific:
Derek B.
Most Enjoyable Game:
Best Night Scene:
Eh. Haven’t seen enough to fairly judge.
Best Overall Writeups:
Same as above.
Most Improved:
I’m gonna say MLT, cause I think Prague just bull***** his way through games, like I do, and that’s not improved, that’s just luck.:-P No offense meant, takes a lot to do what ya do. MLT’s come a long way from what I’ve seen.
Best Moderator:
Most Dramatic Moment:
Can’t pick just one.
Rookie of the Year:
Wow. That’s tough. Looking at how it is as of me typing this, I’m gonna say The Two to put him even with Jaded and SO. All four are worthy though.
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:
MJDGoldeneye fake claiming Clark Griswald
Most Underrated:
The_black_phenom
Hall of Fame:
Derek_B(Seriously, if he’s not inducted something’s wrong.)
BlueStar
MJDGoldeneye.

Okay, I went and read through some of the games to refresh my memory. Took a while...
Most Strategic Claim:
I was involved in this, so may not be frowned upon. Sorry, but
Bak - in Outbreak. Scum PGO who took out 2 townies near the end with a fake claim of being a reverse student.
Best Fake Claim:
Has to be Dww. Fooled me completely.
Most Shocking Claim:
Hmm, not really sure on this.
Funniest Roleclaim:
Bit random this, but think it was in DAM
Shigakai - was completely honest with his role claim and very helpful. Problem was he was scum.
Best Role:
This category is to recognize well-crafted roles in a single mafia game. Remember the award is for the ROLE, not the PLAYER. A well crafted role played poorly should not be penalized in this category.
The Mortician in Dust - Vampire, bulletproof, couldn't claim , couldn't speak during certain phases and if the town guessed he was a vampire, he would have left the game. Awesome
Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1):
Fairly self-explanatory, this category is to recognize players who seem to have a short lifespan, either because they're not trusted, or because they're so well respected that no one wants them around in case they're not on the same side.
Mach
UFC
BIP-Town:
This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing a town-aligned character in a single game.
Arrows - PGO Simpsons
BIP-Mafia:
Again might be slightly frowned upon but..
Mr T - Power Rangers.
BIP-Cult:
This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing a cult-aligned character in a single game.
Astil - has to be
BIP-Mason:
This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing characters with individual or special alignments in a single game.
Self as part of the Gullwings in FF
Gonvick
BIP-Losing Effort:
this category is to recognize the best effort made in a losing situation.
Wallbanger - Sin
Best Group:
This category is to recognize outstanding group performance in a single game regardless of alignment. "The town" is considered a group for purposes of this category.
Town in Sunnydale.
Best Discussion:
This category is to recognize individual players whose overall quality of discussion contributes to the enjoyment of the game for all players over the course of the year.
Anti
Derek
Best Scum Catcher:
This category is to recognize players who have a knack for identifying mafia and successfully eliminating them from play over the course of the year.
Derek_b
Best Serial Killer:
This category is to recognize the most effective performance by a serial killer, cannibal, and/or psychopath in a single game. Both high body count and fear struck in the hearts of players should be taken into account in this category.
Imarevenant
ShadowedFlames
Funniest Player:
This category is to recognize the funniest/most entertaining player overall over the course of the year.
Astil
Prophet
Most Prolific:
This category is to recognize the player who has generated the most quality participation over the course of the year. This should not be considered a 'post-whore' award, it is for consistent, meaningful participation in the GDS mafia community over the course of the year.
Wallbanger
Most Enjoyable Game:
Both of my favourite haven't been nominated yet, which is a surprise. Think this is subjective though, cos who enjoys a game when you die early doors.
Sin gets my vote. Wish I could vote twice.
Best Night Scene:
This category is to recognize an outstanding writeup for a night scene in a single game. Both composition and game impact should be taken into consideration.
Final Fantasy night 4
Outbreak finale night
Best Overall Writeups:
This category is to recognize the overall writing of lynches, night scenes and special events for a single game. Composition, game impact, consistency of style, and the overall storytelling of the collective game writeups should be taken into consideration.
Dust
Sin
Most Improved:
This category is to recognize a player who has made considerable strides in his play throughout the year.
Don't feel im in a position to vote on this, not knowing how people played last year.
Best Moderator:
This category is to recognize a moderator who has achieved distinctive excellence in scenario design, game balancing, entertaining writeups and adjudication of issues.
I effin rule
Anti
Most Dramatic Moment:
This category recognizes outstanding dramatic moments in game due to the players' interaction, shift in game momentum and/or the invocation of abilities to create a swerve.
In Power Rangers where the rangers sent a fake message to T. He replied only to call it a trap minutes later. But the damage was already done.
Rookie of the Year:
This category recognizes outstanding contributions to the game by a new player. For purposes of this award, a 'rookie' is defined as a player who played and completed their FIRST GDS mafia game in calendar year 2009.
Not sure if this breaks the rules but even if he played 1 game last year, he's still a rookie in my eyes. And a good one.
eayragt
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:
Also referred to as 'Best Botch', this category is for recognizing the most memorable moment where a particular player choice/action/statement doesn't go exactly the way it was meant to.
The Two dissing the greatness that is Ferris Bueller - DAM
Most Underrated:
This category is to recognize up-and-coming players who have had multiple high quality performances, yet seems not to be well known within the mafia community.
For this I thought about who I try and take out first if I'm scum.

I'm actually quite fond of pubgrub in general, but our group pub outing was kind of standard. We had to vote on one entree, and the timid majority went with standard roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. I mean, come on, you could have gone with shephard's pie, bangers and mash, steak and mushroom pie! Where's your sense of adventure, kids! Hey, for 2010 can we add a new "Best Micro Game Award"? I feel like the micro games don't get the attetion that they deserve. :( And no, this has nothing to do with me starting a micro game! :D ;)
Just bumping this.

Nope. Most everyone who is going to post noms has done so. With the exception of 3-4 I can think of. :)

Honestly, we've only had a few micro games, and they were just to try games with that few amount of roles out - nothing more, nothing less. There's no real need to bring out an award for them, especially seeing as there have been so few o them. Maybe we could do something involving micro games in next years awards(maybe :P) , but it's really late to add an award to the nomination block right now.

Saddest of all was the near rapturous response to Taco Bell and Popeye's Chicken at the Dallas airport on the way home.
Never had either of those. Im sure there delightful though. Our pub food isnt that bad, bit of a new craze round here with the gastro pubs.
Ah, thanks. Whether I'm actually eligible as I played one game before this year (albiet 2 and a half years ago) is one thing. Whether I deserve a nomination with my stunning (and as far as I'm aware unmatched) 0-6 lifetime record is quite another.
Records dont mean anything really. Sometimes you pull a role that's just plaine hard to win. And its hard to win when scum as well. Take Sunnydale, did okay in well in that but still comes out as a loss.

The records thing is screwy anyway. Say you start a game as town, die, come back as a scummy replacement a few phases before the scum are killed. Is that really a loss on your part or a victory?
Same thing with recruitments. Say you play a superb game as a townie but eventually get recruited into a cult and they lose? Is that really a loss on your part?
Or, something I've felt can be a pretty common occurence. Say you're town aligned and playing well enough that scum see you as a threat. They kill you, and in part, win the game by killing townie threats. Is it your fault for losing when you played well but the guy who got the protector role was inactive and thus left you to your fate?
Putting any serious stock in wins/losses one has to assume that all things are equal. Hell, all things are never equal in any single game, much less a series of games.

I agree with this. Heck if a real SK ever wins a game that win would be bigger then any win ever. Should make them an automatic HoFer even if they only play that one game.

Heck, for that matter look at my original role in Power Rangers, I flipped alignments depending on whether it was an odd or even numbered phase.

My final nominations:
Most Strategic Claim:
This category is to recognize the most strategic claim made.
I'll second bp claiming Burns in simpsons.
Funniest Roleclaim:
This category is to recognize the funniest/most entertaining roleclaim in a single game, regardless of game impact.
Seconding Arrows as the Rod again, hehe.
Best Role:
This category is to recognize well-crafted roles in a single mafia game. Remember the award is for the ROLE, not the PLAYER. A well crafted role played poorly should not be penalized in this category.
I'm sure there's been a lot better than the current list. I feel like I should add something from SIN. I'm gonna go for the Silverton Slasher because it was definiely the most memorable, and was brilliant in narrative terms especially. I'm sure there's some great townie stuff in that game as well and this category does tend to I think favour indies...but the Slasher, like I said, is what stands out. Funny thing is I don't even know who it was who had this role in the game?!
Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1):
Fairly self-explanatory, this category is to recognize players who seem to have a short lifespan, either because they're not trusted, or because they're so well respected that no one wants them around in case they're not on the same side.
WC made a late run for it but I guess that's more appropriate for next year, so I'll just second lprock as then there's a good list of four seconded multiple times.
BIP-Mafia:
This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing a mafia-aligned character in a single game.
Seconding outlaw in Springfield.
BIP-Cult:
This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing a cult-aligned character in a single game.
lol there's only one nominee, in the interest of it being a decent race I'll throw in derek as Number One in the simpsons, cause he sure played the role with a lot of balls and really confused a lot of the town while he was alive. The more I think about it the more I like the way that cult worked, with the restrictions on recruitment based on votes and bibles preventing people from joining.
BIP-Mason:
This category is to recognize outstanding individual performance in playing characters with individual or special alignments in a single game.
The nomination list says gonvick as Louie in outbreak, sure there's a mistake with the name there lol. But anyway, seconding BP for her indie run in Simpsons.
BIP-Losing Effort:
this category is to recognize the best effort made in a losing situation.
Loving the strong outbreak mafia presence here lol, I can't remember much of it but I'll second gonvick again as he had a typically strong game.
Best Group:
This category is to recognize outstanding group performance in a single game regardless of alignment. "The town" is considered a group for purposes of this category.
Mafia in oblivion as I said before, ownage.
Best Discussion:
This category is to recognize individual players whose overall quality of discussion contributes to the enjoyment of the game for all players over the course of the year.
I'll second Self, as everyone else on the list has been seconded and I like his general approach.
Best Scum Catcher:
This category is to recognize players who have a knack for identifying mafia and successfully eliminating them from play over the course of the year.
Sticking with Archer as I said before.
Best Serial Killer:
This category is to recognize the most effective performance by a serial killer, cannibal, and/or psychopath in a single game. Both high body count and fear struck in the hearts of players should be taken into account in this category.
Slim as Chuck I suppose.
Funniest Player:
This category is to recognize the funniest/most entertaining player overall over the course of the year.
Sticking with derek.
Most Prolific:
This category is to recognize the player who has generated the most quality participation over the course of the year. This should not be considered a 'post-whore' award, it is for consistent, meaningful participation in the GDS mafia community over the course of the year.
I'll have to second MJD, he's seemingly ever-present.
Most Enjoyable Game:
What was your favorite game in 2009?
As I said before, Outbreak first, and I'll second character creation.
Best Night Scene:
This category is to recognize an outstanding writeup for a night scene in a single game. Both composition and game impact should be taken into consideration.
Again I'm sure something from SIN should be in here but I don't remember much of it, so I'm gonna say Night One. I think after that people realised how deep they were in, and the combination of detail with the darkness on deaths was interesting.
Best Overall Writeups:
This category is to recognize the overall writing of lynches, night scenes and special events for a single game. Composition, game impact, consistency of style, and the overall storytelling of the collective game writeups should be taken into consideration.
Seconding Sin.
Most Improved:
This category is to recognize a player who has made considerable strides in his play throughout the year.
MLT.
I have to toot the Springfield horn here so I'm gonna go for Shadowed/Fat Tony's use of the super awesome death ray on comradebot/maggie as his final act of defiance :D
Rookie of the Year:
This category recognizes outstanding contributions to the game by a new player. For purposes of this award, a 'rookie' is defined as a player who played and completed their FIRST GDS mafia game in calendar year 2009.
Still Gabbo. I'll second eayragt to leave a very good list all seconded.
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:
Also referred to as 'Best Botch', this category is for recognizing the most memorable moment where a particular player choice/action/statement doesn't go exactly the way it was meant to.
I still can't see beyond Aussie's fake claim of Frankie the Squealer. This role could have been monumentally more destructive. And he wasn't even under pressure, hehe.
Most Underrated:
This category is to recognize up-and-coming players who have had multiple high quality performances, yet seems not to be well known within the mafia community.
I think i'll second SuperOwens, think he began in Simpsons with a big, big role in miller-vig Snake, and has since delivered a lot of good contributions.
I had thrown masterded down here and my comments remain true but I think I'll switch over to second Astil based on those who've been seconded so far.

Hey, Shape...
If memory serves, I was the one with the ray gun that I used on Comrade/Maggie, not the other way around as you have listed. I was the one being strung up right after a winter storm and that was my last act before I knocked myself out for about 12 hours of sleep. If I was going down, then dang it, I was going to send the town into chaos as a parting shot!

No. The seconds are if there are a LARGE number of people nominated. If there are 5-6 then they will all make it. More then that the ones with the most noms will be used.
Don't quote me on that but its how Banger had it set up last year.

The Silverton Slasher role
You are Nathan Cromwell, Individually Aligned Silverton Slasher
There, in the darkest recesses, they’ll find you. You see yourself as a means of balance against the decay in the world. Humanity can never reach its apex so long as it continues to coddle the weak and unfit. By shedding the false morality that seeks to defend the undeserving, you believe you have achieved the status of a Nietzschean Uber-Mensch (super man). And now the town of Silverton has fallen into such a state of corruption, everyone who remains is complicit in the decadence. It has been nearly a year since you have hunted, but it is time to take up your blade once more.
When possible, you prefer the privacy needed to inflict pain upon your victims, because it is only through the crucible of pain that both you and your victims can become stronger. As such, each night phase you must PM the moderators to inform them of your next intended target. That person will then be killed, but you have some say as to how it will be done. Instead of killing your target that night, you abduct them and take them to the basement in your home. There you have the… instruments needed to fulfill your every dark desire. You may abduct up only one person per phase, and the person you kidnap will die in the same phase in which you grab them. But there are other things you like to do with the bodies, and your basement can hold up to two bodies at a time without concern for gathering undue attention.
After two bodies have been collected, one must either be dumped the next phase, or you must directly kill your target that phase. You may also dump one body at the house of a target you abduct, thereby possibly creating greater confusion for the authorities. Please note, you must kill (either directly or via abduction) every night. Abduction is a tool you may use to possibly confound others and increase your chances of survival.
You win after everyone in the game is dead, dead, dead!
The thing with dumping bodies and switching them around is that the game was dark, had it ever come to pass, the CSI or Mafia thief/snitch wouldn't be able to find that particular victim (the ones that were dumped) unless they targetted the latest abducted victim ((and thereby went to the newest victims house)). It was a way to keep people from linking the SK to his victims and tracing him that way.

Anyway yeah, nominations soon. Probably. I seriously will probably finish them today.

Most Strategic Claim:
GruntMark claiming George W. Bush in Super Silliness Mafia. Even though I called it as fake as soon as he posted it, we did nothing about it. xD
Best Fake Claim:
GruntMark claiming George W. Bush in Super Silliness Mafia. Even though I called it as fake as soon as he posted it, we did nothing about it. xD
Most Shocking Claim:
I'm seconding UFC-KING claiming Gretchen Grundler day 1 in Recess. What a very bad decision that was, was so easy for us mafias to take him out after that.
Funniest Roleclaim:
GruntMark claiming George W. Bush in Super Silliness Mafia. Even though I called it as fake as soon as he posted it, we did nothing about it. xD
Best Role:
You are SNAFUDave: Tampon Tag Aligned “It” from Glotnot's unfinished Webcomic's mafia. Here, I'll post the role for everyone. This'll show you all why it's so good:
You are SNAFUDave: Tampon Tag Aligned “It”
Of “SNAFU Comics” Fame
You are Neutral and Human.
OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!
You were running through the flowers, in the park, like you usually do, and then, by the trashcan, you saw the most AWESOME THING!
It was a little white piece of cloth, with blood on it, and a little string, and you got the BEST IDEA EVER!
TAMPON!
TAG!
DUDE!
Yeah, just throw the little thing at somebody, and then…THEY’RE IT!
BEST IDEA EVER, EVER, EVER!!
Just tell Glotnot who you want to throw it at. You can hold the tampon for, like, three nights, before you get sick of holding it! YES!
You may not speak with anyone outside of the game thread.
You cannot win.
This role must win.
Panix Award (most likely to die Day 1:
Slim Jim whenever I have any sort of killing method.
BIP-Town:
I'll second Glotnot for his performance in Recess Mafia. If only I'd had the courage to shoot him. =(
BIP-Mafia:
Seconding GruntMark in Super Silliness mafia
BIP-Cult:
In all honesty, I don't really have andy idea of who to put here, so I'll just second Astil for Sci-fi chaos. Everyone else seems to be doing it. ;D
BIP-Mason:
From what I read, Blackphoenix did great in Springfield as Mr. Burns, but I love my Slim Jim and he was Chuck Norris, so I'll be seconding Slim Jim as Chuck Norris.
BIP-Losing Effort:
Can't really put anything here without lying and making something up, so I'll hafta leave it blank. =( My memory is horrible when it comes to the losers. ;D
Best Group:
Seconding Mafia from Simpsons because that game was lovely.
Best Discussion:
Arrows has always contributed a good deal to discussion from what I've seen when I play with him, so he'll be my choice for this category.
Best Serial Killer:
lprock as the Silverton Slasher in SIN. I mean, er, seconding Slim Jim as Chuck Norris once again.
Funniest Player:
Glotnot. Just read the role I nominated for Best Role and you'll see why.
Most Prolific:
Seconding MLT. She's been active in every single game I've played and generally a nice hand to the town - seeing as she's always town. =P
Most Enjoyable Game:
already nominated recess mafia in an earlier post
Best Night Scene:
Seconding Super Silly Mafia night 2.
Best Overall Writeups:
Sin Sin Sin Sin Sin. Seconding.
Most Improved:
Seconding MLT. I remember her first game on here, so she's definitely improved a good deal. xD
Best Moderator:
already nominated tbp for his work in recess in an earlier post
Most Dramatic Moment:
Eh, I don't really have a choice for this. I'm never good nominating in this category, there are always so many choices, so I'm gonna hafta leave this one blank.
Rookie Of The Year:
Seconding Gabbo, he's such a lovely player.
The "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" Award:
Seconding The Aussie's claim as Frankie The Squealer in Simpsons Mafia. I dunno why he thought it was a good idea at the time, but oh well. I'm guessing he did, at least. =P
Most Underated:
Seconding The Black Phenom.
Hall of Fame:
eh, I'm not really in a position to nominate anyone here, as I've never been the most active member of the community, and haven't really seen anyone's skills first hand. I would've probably ended up nom'ing derek_b, so I'll just second him. Everyone else seems to be doing it. :p derek_b.
Aaaand finally, I'm done. This took way too long, hopefully I'll be completely active in all of the 2010 games and won't have to wrack my brain forever and ever to think of who to nominate.
