View Full Version : Naming Conventions

I realized that I have certain naming conventions when it comes to naming events and tag teams. The Cornellverse has always had copious references to the Pixies and Frank Black. My question is, does anyone else have specific influences they use when naming events, tag teams, stables, and the such?
When I play NYCW, I always name my shows after quotes and lines from the Warriors. My NYCW tag teams are ALWAYS named after Velvet Underground, Lou Reed or Ramones songs.
So, for example, I had the tag teams of Walk on the Wild Side (Rick Sanders and Ricky Douglas) and White Light/White Heat (The New York Doll and Madman Boone) face off at a show called 'Can You Dig It?'
For some strange reason, my 21CW save had over twenty events, all named after Pop Will Eat Itself songs and albums. My favorite? Preaching to the Perverted.

Yeah, the Warriors is my favorite movie ever. I saw it on Joe Bob Brigg's Monstervision show and became an addict. I rented it from the only video store in town so many times they gave it to me. It was one of the first DVDs I ever purchased. If I was better at making alts and the such, I would so fill NYCW up with Baseball Furies and Riffs and Rogues. THAT would be an easy fed to book! You could argue the Fed tried that for a while, with the Boriquas and Nation of Domination and DOA, but it was never quite crazy enough.

Yes man! I loved that movie. First DVD I ever bought. I loved that movie. Ajax was my dawg. When the video game came out I was just waiting for like ever for Gamestop to open. One of my favorite movies ever. No matter how many amazing CGI things there were. I still love Warriors. I just loved it. Awesome to see a fellow Addict.
But onto the topic.
I use band/artist names in my games. Christian Van Halen. Steve DeRoth. Too Hot turned into Too Cool J.

I use a combination of song titles(mostly from Slipknot, Mushroomhead, The Misfits, and Wednesday 13), but I also use some generic sounding names that I think sound awesome. Vendetta for example. It sounds like a PPV name

My naming conventions are as eclectic as my own tastes. I tend to follow tangents a lot. Like, I wouldn't use a rock star name for a worker, I'd use the name of the sound or mixing engineer from my favorite song of theirs. Wouldn't use a popular/well known song title as an event name, I'd use the name of a song from an album by the artist two albums before or after the album that song was on.
Odd, I know.

When I'm stuck for an event name, I'll honestly pretty much just use the name of the song or band I'm liostening to.

I have weird ways of naming events. For instance, I usually have an event name Ball of Confusion which is named after the Temptations' song. I usually have an event named Land of Confusion after the Genesis song.
For Kobe's Community-Verse I named a bunch of events based on World War I books and movies.
As far as tag team names, I always have a hard time with those. Nothing that I think of ever seems original.
Now if I am naming a character, you will see a lot of last names of obscure Yankees players, I always have someone named after Andy Stankiewicz, Mel Hall and Domingo Jean. I also use a lot of tv character names, my favorite pool to dip from is Dr. Who/Tourchwood or Survivor.

Does anyone have a finisher called 'Debaser'? :p
I used to name all my custom promotions United Championship Wrestling, but now that there's a future promotion known as UCW, I switched to Competitive Wrestling United. Regardless, I normally name all of my events after electric or energy based things like "Shockwave" and "Livewire". Once I had the company quite large and made a brand split and had all the second brand's motifs be fire and heat related (Firestorm, Heatwave, etc.).

Great stuff. Im so running a tournament show called Get the Girl and Kill the Baddies

I held a show called Get the Girl and Kill the Baddies! It was a 10 Man Gauntlet with random entries. Adam Matravers drew third and lost to DJ Reason, the ninth entrant. Nightmare at 20,000 Feet would be good for a show held aboard a plane, don'tcha think?
Also, I have never called a finisher Debaser, but Keith Vegas uses the Wave of Mutilation, a Side Russian Legsweep with a floatover.

My naming conventions tend to vary depending on which promotion I'm playing, but events named after prog rock songs tend to crop up regularly. On my 08 NYCW game they always had an event named The Lamb lies down on Broadway, and it wasn't uncommon for Pink Floyd or Jethro Tull to fill up a calendar year.
As for tag teams, the one convention I had is that if they were supposed to play a key role in proceedings they were invariably an Express.

Events-wise, I tend to look at my collection of graphic novels; Neighbourhood Threat, Darkness Falls, Public Enemies, Savage Times, War Drums, World's End, Hell Comes To Birmingham, and hundreds more.
Tag teams, totally depends on the promotion.

Tag Teams I have a habit of using cartoons, comics or even The Muppets (Called one of my teams At The Dance) and then one team became the W.S.E. (West Sesame Experience based off the 3 letters that sponsored Sesame Streets first episode)
Otherwise Fall Out Boy songs tend to make events for me. As well as other bands and stuff

Was I the only one that saw something really wrong about a Puerto Rican street gang fighting Black Supremacists and a bunch of Bikers (a couple of whome were actually skinheads?)...
...that's not cool, surely? :p

I look a few places to inspire me with names for tag teams, events or even repackaged workers (I have a habit of taking the forename and surname of two different actors/artists that I like and combining them). My DVD collection and my iPod are probably the two most obvious places.

Not tag teams or event names, but I've got such a pretictable naming convention for workers
[Random real life first name] + [random object or verb for the surname] ... If I'm feeling really cliche I'll make sure they both start with the same letter
That's how I end up with people like Meryl Sternum, Maxine Shift, and Flora Fahrenheit

I don't remember exactly who they where, but I remember in 08 I was running MAW and I came up with the idea of pairing up two rookies with Karen Killer with Killer in an "evil teacher" gimmick and calling the team "Hot for Teacher" after the Van Halen song.
I usually use a ton of Guns N' Roses, Metallica and Iron Maiden songs as references for my events and when playing in Mexico I sometimes use spanish translations of old WWE and WCW PPV names.

Are you saying the point of pro wrestling is NOT to fan the flames of racial tension?
Oh.
