THE MEETING

Date: January 5, 1999

Time: 2:50 P.M.

Location: XCC Headquarters, Los Angeles, CA

It was an overcast and colder than usual January day in California. Josh Bristow is sitting uncomfortably at his desk staring out his office window over-looking the south side of downtown Los Angeles. Its days like this, he thought to himself, that remind me of home. The dark and gloomy autumn days of rustic Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania were still a vivid memory in the back of his mind.

It had been a year since he had made the jump from Silverman Productions to move out west and join family friend Vince Whiteman in his pursuit to “find the next great idea.” Josh, an Ivy League Graduate, wasn’t terribly impressed with Vince’s “bowling alley law practices,” but they were generating revenue and were allowing the “Steel City Playboy” to pursue his ambitions in the world of Mixed Martial Arts. Vince’s baby, Xtreme Cage Combat had made it through its first year of operation without many problems, but also unfortunately without much fanfare. The show’s booking had been mediocre at best and the cards were drawing the types of crowds at which a GAMMA administrator would cringe.

Internally, Josh blamed himself for the lack of success and innovation surrounding the company. As far as Josh could tell, Vince was happy with the company’s product, but then again Vince was never one for showing all of his true emotions. The fact of the matter was that Josh was a “numbers” guy and he could never understand the type of emotion necessary to be on the same level as a fighter. He didn’t look at a fighter and see a modern gladiator, he saw a disposable product he needed to sell. He didn’t see the newly designed and built two-thousand-seat Hazard Pavilion on South Main Street as hallowed ground, he saw demographic pie charts in action. Try all his anger and might, Josh would never be his father. The herald stories of Henry Bristow were ones of greatness and legend, to this day they still made Josh clinch his fist in resentment.

As he let out a deep sigh, his office phone begins to ring.

Yes?

Mr. Bristow?

Yes?

Did you still need to meet with Vince this afternoon?

Yes…Yes I did.

Vince said he will be able to see you at 3 O’clock, if that works for you?

Well, that’s not very much notice…

Mr. Bristow, you know what his schedule is like… He can give you fifteen minutes at 3…

That will be fine Kathy, thank you…

Josh glancing at his watch knew he had very little time to prepare for what he felt needed to be said. In his mind, it had been a year and he had done what was expected of him. Vince had explained and promised that when the time came, he would move Josh to a more suitable position handling the finances and would bring someone in to handle the booking and day to day operations with the talent. Josh had even taken it upon himself to vet some of his former co-workers at Silverman and felt he had a couple potential replacements he could present to Vince.

As he closed his desk drawer and set a folder containing resumes on his desk, he noticed a new email had made its way into his inbox. “It’s probably another damn Windows 98 update” he thought to himself. As the window opened, the name Will Davidson Jr. appeared next to Sender. “What could he possibly want?” Josh thought to himself. As he went to open the email, his office phone began to ring again.

Yes?

Mr. Bristow, are you going to be able to make your 3 O’clock?

Yes, Why?

Well, Mr. Bristow, it's 3 O’clock.

I’m sorry, Yes, I’m on way over.

Date: January 5, 1999

Time: 3:06 P.M.

Location: Vince Whiteman’s Office

Kathy Daniels: “Mr. Whiteman, I have Mr. Josh Bristow to see you…”

Vince Whiteman: “Yes, bring him in… Thank you Kathy…”

Vince Whiteman: “Joshua, just the man I wanted to see. How are you?”

Josh Bristow: “I’m fine, thanks.”

Vince Whiteman: “Wow, hold back the excitement buddy, so what’s got your ass in a sling today?” (Whiteman props his feet on his desk)

Josh Bristow: “As I said I’m doing fine, I just had some matters of business I was hoping we could discuss.”

Vince Whiteman: “Well, since you’re classically late, I have about have eight minutes to spare before I have to catch a car to the airport. So what do you got for me?”

Josh Bristow: “I wasn’t aware you were leaving town.”

Vince Whiteman: “I’m not, what do you got for me?”

Josh Bristow: “Well… (clearing his throat), as you know Vince, the New Year is upon us...”

Vince Whiteman: “I know tell me about it right, did I tell you about those two girls in Vegas?”

Josh Bristow: “No you didn’t, but that’s not…”

Vince Whiteman: “Well, let me tell you, I don’t remember much, but I was sore as hell the next morning, that’s for sure.”

Josh Bristow: “That’s a great story Vince, but there real reason I was hoping we could meet today was to discuss the future of my position.”

Vince Whiteman: “The future of your position?”

Josh Bristow: “Yes my position Vince, when I came over here from Silverman it was on the notion that after the first year you would find something more suitable to my skill set.”

Vince Whiteman: “Skill Set?”

Josh Bristow: “Vince, I told you I was more than willing to help you get this venture off the ground, but you told me in the mean time you would find someone who could communicate better with the fighters and spend more time handling the cards, so I could focus my energy on the finances.”

Vince Whiteman: “Well…”

Josh Bristow: (While setting resumes on Vince’s desk) “I’ve even taken the liberty of vetting some of my former co-workers at Silverman, these are guys that are more than capable and have some interest in making the jump to MMA.”

Vince Whiteman: “Josh, I appreciate your ever impressive pro-active effort, but…”

(INTERCOM): Mr. Whiteman, your car has arrived.

Vince Whiteman: “Thank you Kathy.”

Vince Whiteman: “As I was saying, I appreciate your effort, but this matter has already been resolved.”

Josh Bristow: “Resolved? How so?”

Vince Whiteman: (Getting up from his desk and heading towards the door) “Josh, I’ve got a car to catch and I need to get to the airport.”

Josh Bristow: “Damn it, Vince I want to talk about this…”

Vince Whiteman: “Josh, I won’t need those resumes, I’ve already found your replacement. I flew him in this afternoon; he comes highly recommended by Matt Tripp.

Josh Bristow: “What! You don’t even consult me? Who is he?”

Vince Whiteman: (Walking out of his office) “Well Josh, you should know him pretty well, he’s your brother.”

Josh Bristow: (Saying to himself) “Will…?”

The Meeting 1.2

Date: January 5, 1999

Time: 3:22 P.M.

Location: Vince Whiteman’s Limo En Route To LAX

Shelly Watkins: “Mr. Whiteman, we should be arriving at LAX shortly; Mr. Davidson’s flight is scheduled to land at 3:45pm. Here is the information you requested from Mr. Hatcher, he had his people send it over earlier this morning. (Hands over what appears to be a dossier)”

Vince Whiteman: “Shelly, how long have you been my personal assistant?”

Shelly Watkins: “Four months, one week, and three days Sir.”

Vince Whiteman: “Now, in those four months, one week and three days… I have asked you to do one thing, haven’t I?”

Shelly Watkins: “Yes, Mr. Whiteman…I mean...Vince.”

Vince Whiteman: “See that wasn’t so hard. Now, let’s see what old Hatch dug up for me this time…”

On the front of the dossier, a note reads:

“Vince, I dug about as deep as I could on this kid, he appears to be legit and his past shouldn’t give us any problems. I’d keep an eye on his brother though. –Hatch.”

Shelly Watkins: “Sir, I don’t mean to pry, but what function does Mr. Hatcher serve?”

Vince Whiteman: (Glancing up from the dossier) “He gets me the information I need.”

Opening the dossier, Vince begins to read:

Full Name: William Harold Davidson Jr.

DOB: 11/23/1972

Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA (Currently resides in Las Vegas, NV)

Education: Syracuse '94 Summa Cum-Laude, Harvard Law School '97

Recent Work Experience: Has worked directly for Matt Tripp and GAMMA as Director of Talent and Personnel since August of 1997.

Personal Info: Will was born an only child on November 23, 1972 to a young couple in Pittsburgh, PA. His father was a steel worker who was highly respected amongst his peers. Will's mother Helen was an intelligent and beautiful woman who served as an administrative assistant for local boxing promoter Henry Bristow.

PEOPLE OF INTEREST

William Davidson Sr: Will's father was killed at the age of 26 on December 8th, 1980 when a fire started due to equipment failure at the #6 Blast Furnace at US Steel's South Pittsburgh plant. Details of event were not made available to the public by US Steel representatives. Many of Bill's former co-workers who witnessed the events that took place would later come forward to provide the family with some closure. The consensus was that Bill was last seen re-entering the furnace after his foreman informed him that some of their men were still trapped on the upper levels of the furnace. Bill’s quick decision to re-enter the blaze and help locate his co-workers allowed for 5 men to be saved, but during the evacuation he was killed when a stairway collapsed due to mounting heat of the fire.

Helen Davidson-Bristow: After his father’s death, Will was raised by his mother Helen, who after two years of mourning fell in love with and married her employer Henry Bristow in 1982 (Henry’s wife Nancy was killed in an automobile accident involving a drunk driver in 1981). Helen is currently retired and lives with Mr. Bristow in Phoenix, Arizona.

Henry Bristow: Henry, a former Pennsylvanian Golden Gloves Boxing Champion is well known as the patriarch of the Bristow Gyms boxing promotion, a legacy established originally by his father Frank Bristow in the early years of organized boxing. The Bristow family gym was founded in 1941 by Frank Bristow in Pittsburgh, PA (a second location would later be opened in Philadelphia, PA in 1943). Frank was noted for operating his gym and stable of fighters with an iron-fist, and though in hindsight some sports writers today consider him to be a savvy businessman for that era, his shortcomings came in his consistent mismanagement of talent and his deliberate enforcement of segregation in his gyms. Frank’s only son Henry was born in 1943 and began training as a product of the family business very early in his youth. Due to his natural abilities and his father’s strict requirement for dedication to the gym, Henry went on to a successful boxing career (15 wins, 1 loss, 14 KOs). However, his boxing days were cut short, as he was forced to retire at the age of 23 due to permanent damage he received to his right eye during a fight with a youthful Douglas Banner Jr. in 1965 (Bristow’s only recorded loss). Despite what the press assumed and reported at the time, personal statements from family and friends indicate that Bristow had zero animosity for his injuries caused by his fight with Banner. In fact, the opposite occurred from their meeting, as the two men developed a very close friendship shortly after their bout.

In January of 1966, Henry married his high-school sweetheart Nancy Taylor; and Joshua, the first of their three children (daughters Mary and Theresa were born in 1968 & 1969 respectively) was born. In 1967, after spending the year prior learning the day to day operations of Bristow Gyms from his father, Henry assumed full ownership and operating responsibility for the business when Frank passed away due to a massive heart attack in March of that year. In 1968, Henry took the first step towards re-inventing his business by breaking his father’s practice of segregation, signing Douglas Banner Jr. as the first African-American to fight for Bristow Gyms. Over the course of the next 40 years, Henry Bristow produced some of professional boxing’s greatest champions, most memorable matches, and developed the foundation for today’s business practices in the boxing world. Henry retired from the sport of boxing in 1997 after his lawyer and close friend Martin Whiteman negotiated the selling of Bristow Gym assets to rival boxing promotion powerhouse Silverman Productions.

Joshua Bristow: Joshua is the first born son of Henry and Nancy Bristow. He was born on January 16th, 1966, and is the biological sibling of Mary and Theresa Bristow. After his father’s second marriage in 1982, he legally became the brother of Will Davidson Jr. Despite his natural-born ability for sports, Joshua used much of his early youth to focus on academics. Joshua’s advanced skills in writing and mathematics encouraged his parents to enroll him in the finest secondary and preparatory schools on the east coast. According to the accounts of former classmates, Joshua was a quiet student who mostly kept to himself. At the age of 15, Joshua’s mother was killed in an automobile accident. The local newspapers reported that Nancy Bristow was passing through a four way stop on her way to the Pittsburgh International Airport to pick up her husband when her vehicle was struck on the driver side by an intoxicated motorist. According to Joshua’s former classmates, this event was extremely difficult for Joshua to accept and to this day he still holds his father responsible for her death. My sources also believe that any hostility Mr. Bristow had towards his father was amplified even further when his father remarried in 1982 to Helen Davidson. I believe a sign of this increased hostility can easily be seen in Mr. Bristow’s rejection of his half brother Will Davidson. My sources tell me that Mr. Bristow as a young adult never viewed Will as a true member of the family and rejected any praise his father Henry put towards Will’s direction. In 1996, after completing his undergraduate work at Yale and his MBA at Harvard, Joshua was approached by his father and given the opportunity to take over as acting-President of Bristow Gyms. Mr. Bristow rejected the offer to run Bristow Gyms, and shortly after his father sold his assets to Silverman Productions, he received a position in the merged company. After two years of service as a financial analyst for Silverman Production, Mr. Bristow took a position with his current employer, and family friend, Vince Whiteman as President of Business Operations for upstart mixed-martial-arts promotion Xtreme Cage Combat.

The Interview

Date: January 5, 1999

Time: 3:51 P.M.

Location: Vince Whiteman’s Limo

Vince Whiteman: “Will, I can’t say again how great it is to see you; it’s been awhile hasn’t it?”

Will Davidson: “Yeah, I’d say at least three or four days…”

Vince Whiteman: “Days? What are you talking about?”

Will Davidson: “You’re serious Vin? You don’t remember seeing me at the Bellagio last Friday night?”

Vince Whiteman: “The Bellagio!? You saw me in The Bellagio on New Year’s Eve?”

Will Davidson: “Yeah Vin, I ran into you and Tripp in the lobby right after the ball dropped, you both looked like a mess and if I remember correctly, you had a couple of questionable looking woman with you too. I didn’t ask Matt about it on Saturday, but he looked pretty rough to say the least.”

Vince Whiteman: “I remember the ball drop, I remember Tripp, and I even remember those two beautiful and talented young ladies,” he says, smiling, “Yet I don’t remember you. Not even a little bit, funny how that works.”

Will Davidson “Yeah, funny Vin, So who’s the girl upfront with driver, she the new flavor of the month?”

Vince Whiteman: “Well Will, now you must mean Shelly…my new assistant and, no, our relationship is strictly…platonic.”

Will Davidson: “Right, I did notice she seemed more…intuitive…then the normal girls you hire.”

Vince Whiteman: (Cracking a smile) “So how’s business?”

Will Davidson: “Business is good, attendance was up at the last event, Morrison, Regueiro, and Foster are all looking strong, and Tripp seems to think with Alpha-1 already on pay-per-view in Japan, we could be following suit in the States sooner rather than later.”

Vince Whiteman: “That’s if Silverman and the other boxing lackeys stay off your back.”

Will Davidson: “Yeah, Dad would agree with you, he seems to think it will be difficult for us and boxing to co-exist, especially when it comes to television and pay-per-view.

Vince Whiteman: “How is the old-man?”

Will Davidson: “He’s good…you know…busy working on his golf game. He asks me about Josh a lot, if he’s doing well and whatnot. I usually have to tell him the truth, which is I don’t really know how or what he’s doing.”

Vince Whiteman: “You guys still don’t talk?”

Will Davidson: “Well Vin, he works for you, how often does my name get brought up?”

Vince Whiteman: “I think you’d be surprised.”

Will Davidson: “Oh yeah?”

Date: January 5, 1999

Time: 4:21 P.M.

Location: 8897 Beverly Boulevard (The Madeo Restaurant)

Will Davidson: “Vin, what’s the deal? Tripp said you had a guy worth talking a look at who might be ready for the next level, what the hell are we doing in West Hollywood; you said we were headed to your gym?”

Vince Whiteman: “Well, I figured you had a long flight…”

Will Davidson: “Vince, it’s a 55 minute flight, what’s the deal?”

Vince Whiteman: “Will, relax, come inside and have a drink, they love me here…”

Will Davidson: “Vince, do you know I have three weeks to put the final touches on January’s card amongst a hundred other things that need to get done in the mean time and I’m to understand you just flew me 300 miles so we could have a drink and bull****.”

Valet: “Mr. Whiteman, should I have your driver take your car around or no?”

Vince Whiteman: “Well Julio, my dear friend here doesn’t know how to appreciate a kind gesture does he?

Julio The Valet: “No Mr. Whiteman sir, he does not.”

Vince Whiteman: “What are we going to do about that Julio?”

Julio The Valet: “I’m not sure sir.”

Vince Whiteman: “Well Will, would you like to step into this lovely establishment with me to talk business and have a drink, so you can stop making life so hard on Julio here?”

Will Davidson: “Fine, One drink.”

Date: January 5, 1999

Time: 4:29 P.M.

Location: Vince Whiteman’s Table (The Madeo Restaurant)

Waiter: “So will it be the usual, Mr. Whiteman?”

Vince Whiteman: “Yes, please bring us the Springbank with two glasses.”

Waiter: “Excellent Sir, I’ll be right bank.”

Will Davidson: “Scotch? (Looking around the restaurant) It’s 4:30.”

Vince Whiteman: “I’m sorry Will; Did you want a Shirley Temple? I can still try to catch him? (Sarcastically) Oh Garçon?”

Will Davidson: “Knock it off will you please? I thought you said we had business to discuss, who’s this guy you want me to take a look at?”

Vince Whiteman: “Will, I said we would talk business over a drink and we don’t have drinks do we?”

Will Davidson: “Are you serious?”

Waiter: “And…..Here we are gentleman, the 1966 Springbank Single Malt Scotch, aged 30 years. Shall I pour?”

Vince Whiteman: “Oh that won’t be necessary, I can do the honors.”

Waiter: “Very well sir, will you also be joining us for a meal this evening?”

Will Davidson: (adamantly) “No we will not, this will do, thank you.”

Waiter: “Very well…please let know if I can be of future assistance.”

Vince Whiteman: “Thank you kindly.”

(Will quickly pouring drinks)

Will Davidson: “Well, we now both have drinks, would you like to tell me why you brought me down here? Does this “guy” I’m suppose to take a look at even exist, or is this another one of your twisted ways of messing with Tripp?”

Vince Whiteman: (Sipping his scotch) “Well, Will…there is somebody I want you to take a look at it…”

Will Davidson: “Yeah? Well would you mind telling me who this person is?”

Vince Whiteman: (Sipping his scotch again) “Well, Will…you’re looking at him…”

Will Davidson: (letting out an uncomfortable laugh) “That’s a good one Vince…what are you talking about? Tripp said you knew somebody ready for the next level, did I miss something, have you been hitting the gym recently, because honestly buddy (pointing to Vince), I can’t do much with this.”

Vince Whiteman: “Tripp was telling you the truth, he does know somebody ready for the next level, and that person is me.”

Will Davidson: “Vince, you’re not a fighter.”

Vince Whiteman: “Oh, I’m well aware of that Will.”

Will Davidson: “Then what the hell are we talking about?”

Vince Whiteman: “Xtreme Cage Combat.”

Will Davidson: “Your company? What about it?”

Vince Whiteman: “I want you to come run it.”

Will Davidson: “What?”

Vince Whiteman: “I want you to come run my company, we are 10 months out of the gate, the product and the roster is still very much in need of nurturing and development.”

Will Davidson: “You’re serious? You’re not serious…Are you serious?”

Vince Whiteman: “Will, I know you’re hungry for more than Tripp can throw your way. I’m giving you the opportunity to build this company from the ground up. Right now you’re packaging products Tripp has already built. At XCC you would have the opportunity to hire your own roster and develop our champions as you see fit.”

Will Davidson: “Vince you know I already have a job.”

Vince Whiteman: “Yeah I heard…Director of Personnel…I also heard you find Tripp the diamonds in the rough that make him money and in return he occasionally lets you book a match or two with his approval.”

Will Davidson: “I have more input than you think.”

Vince Whiteman: “Will, I’m not looking for input. I’m looking for the next President and Head Booker of Xtreme Cage Combat.”

Will Davidson: “And I’m sure you’ve taken this up with my brother, he does handle your booking, does he not?”

Vince Whiteman: “Joshua Bristow resigned as our head booker earlier this afternoon.”

Will Davidson: “He did what?”

Vince Whiteman: “Did I stutter? He resigned, he quit, he turned in his wings.”

Will Davidson: “So you fired him, so you could offer me this position?”

Vince Whiteman: “Did I say that? No. Joshua Bristow resigned his post as President and Head Booker and has been reassigned as Chief Financial Officer for the duration of his time with XCC.”

Will Davidson: “That’s the truth?”

Vince Whiteman: “Yes…That is the truth.”

Will Davidson: “And is Tripp aware of the details we are discussing in this “business” meeting?”

Vince Whiteman: “You mean did I tell him I was going to offer you a job?”
Will Davidson: “Yes?”

Vince Whiteman: “Of course I did…I told him on New Year’s Eve.”

Will Davidson: “You mean you told him, when he was blackout drunk?”

Vince Whiteman: “Eh, I think he was alright, I mean he did have a few drinks that evening.”

Will Davidson: “What makes you think he would want to me leave?”

Vince Whiteman: “Well, let’s just say I might have a few pictures from that evening that I’m sure Mr. Wallace and the rest of GAMMA executives would hate the press to get their hands on?”

Will Davidson: “Blackmail…Are you serious? You’re not serious…Are you serious?”

Vince Whiteman: (Sipping his scotch) “Well, Will...(Stalling)…Of course I’m kidding. I’ve known Matt for a long time, he knows when a bird's outgrown its cage and if this is something you want, he’s going to understand that. Now, pick up that drink you have been ignoring and let’s talk about what your plans are for getting XCC to the next level”

Will Davidson: (Picking up his drink) “Vince when you say complete control?”

Vince Whiteman: (Picking up his drink) “I mean complete and unobstructed control.”

Will Davidson: (Taking a drink) Hmm. Good Scotch.

"A Change of Plans"

Date: Tuesday, January 12, 1999

Time: 6:00 A.M.

Location: XCC Headquarters, Los Angeles, CA

It was an interesting feeling walking in to my office for the first time. I mean, I had been assigned a desk and workspace at GAMMA, but having my own office provided this additional sense of achievement, something I hadn’t felt since my first event with Tripp. Unfortunately, I wasn’t going to have much time to soak up my new found “success.” The fact of the matter was I had just walked away from a position with one of the most successful MMA companies in the world to take a gamble on a product that had barely raised their popularity beyond the western seaboard.

Thinking back to last week, I was surprised at how well Tripp had taken my resignation. I suppose I had expected more emotion from him, but at the same time it was refreshing to know I had his blessing and an offer to return if things didn’t work out for whatever reason. I looked down at my watch and then glanced out my door to the empty office that was our headquarters. I knew there was only one other person in the building, but knowing him it might as well be empty. It was a little disheartening to know that 6:00am at GAMMA was the beginning of the work day and that today I probably wouldn’t expect to see Vince till nine or maybe later. Glancing down to my checklist for the week, I made a quick note after number five on the list:

6. New Business Hours

Looking at the top of my list, I began to think about some of the events that would need to take place in the next week and what would need to be address with Vince.

1. Talent Evaluation

It would be my intention by the end of the week to meet with our roster and work some of them out over at Tommy Daniels’s gym. I had read over the bios on some of our fighters when I had come in on Monday for my first day and wasn’t terribly impressed. I had seen some of the guys on the independent circuit at one point or another during my scouting trips, but Ziskie, Machado, Adams were really the only ones initially who stood out in my mind as building blocks for the future. Maybe it was something I had picked up from Dad, but it was always my policy to be brutally honest with myself and a fighter when it came to their abilities. It would be with that in mind, that I would be considering the future of many our fighters.

2. Champion Sit-Down

This had become common practice during my time at GAMMA. Tripp was always one for “clearing the air” and about every three months we would sit down with the current belt holders to exchange information on what we expected from them, ideas on who they might want to face next, and what we could do to make their lives easier. We would also take the opportunity to address any issues they might be having with the press or with other guys on the roster.

3. Finances

In hindsight, it probably would have been best to address this issue prior to packing and moving everything I owed to LA. While I was well aware that Vince was a millionaire many times over and had trouble finding things to spend his money on. The only two things I was completely certain about was that XCC usually operated with a budget of around a million dollars and that he had just invested another $800,000 into rebuilding a modern version of the Hazard Pavilion. It also hadn’t really hit me until now, that I wasn’t going to be working with Vince directly for funding, but that I would be working with Josh our newly appointed CFO; who happen to be a notorious tightwad for as long as I could remember.

4. Try-Outs & Staff Additions

The timing of my jump to XCC in some way couldn’t have come at a better time in terms of new talent. I had spent the last five to six months attending independent shows throughout the United States and watching hours of tape on guys from Europe and Asia. Altogether, I had built a shortlist of about twenty-five guys who I thought were ready for the next level of competition in GAMMA’s smaller weight classes. Luckily, when I hit the phones this week, many of the same prospects I had spoke with months ago, jumped at the opportunity to come out for our two-a-day evaluations being held later in the week. In terms of our woman’s division, I had also put together about fifteen names I felt had what it took to be successful. I guess I could blame intuition for my second list, since Tripp consistently shot down the notion of a Women’s division every time I tried to explain the untapped potential it had in terms of our audience.

When considering staff additions, I had already told Vince during our meeting at the Madeo, that I thought pairing another voice with Wyatt for our soon to be VHS and eventual television broadcasts would be a good idea. The thought of putting our events on VHS and selling them at upcoming fights was something that Alpha-1 had already been experimenting with and an idea that Tripp believed would lead to future revenue streams for our industry.

I also had created the expectation during our meeting that I had at least three positions (Director of Talent, Contracts Coordinator, and Scout) I would be filling in the next week to delegate some of my more tedious responsibilities. This would allow me to focus completely on our building our cards and events.

5. Next XCC Event

This by far was the most intimidating item on the list. While I had a year of experience under my belt, the idea of building a card with fighters I wasn’t completely familiar with seemed a little daunting. I had tried for the last two days to catch Josh in his office for some input on the roster and our finances but he was conveniently out of his office or unavailable whenever I tried stopping by. The slated date for our next event would be the last Saturday of February and at this point it seemed possible that we would putting on events every other month until I could get the roster completely filled out.

While setting my plans aside for the time being, a familiar sound chirped from my computer speakers and revealed a new message in my inbox. In his ever classic fashion of being brash and late to the party, my brother Josh left the following:

“Vince has informed me of your hire and your new responsibilities. I have received your requests from Kathy to meet and discuss our current financial situation. I won’t have time this week, plan on meeting me next week on Monday morning in my office. In the mean time, do your job and stop creating distractions that are keeping me from doing mine.”

- Josh Bristow

I guess I had this to expect from him. There wouldn’t be a polite handshake and a “welcome aboard.” We hadn’t spoken directly since he had turned down Dad’s offer to take over the family business, which of course led to its eventual sale to Silverman. I had tried for months after that to call or even stop by the office when I was in LA for business, but Josh never returned the favor. The fact of the matter was that he didn’t have any interest in speaking with me or Dad, so much for brotherly love.

OOC: Thanks to everybody who's taken a glance at this, I'm open to any and all feedback, so feel free to chime in. The roster review should be up this evening or by tomorrow. Thanks! -JPA

Talent Evaluations

Date: Thursday, January 14, 1999

Time: 6:52 A.M.

Location: Tommy Daniel’s Hard Knocks Gym, Los Angeles, CA

Tommy “Mad Dog” Daniels was at one point one of the best Welterweight boxing contenders in the world. Growing up in hay fields of Western Illinois, Tommy was never known so much for his brains as he was for his crippling over-hand right. While fighting for my father, he compiled an amateur record of 15-0 before joining the professional ranks in the mid 80’s. Always the partier, Tommy let his reckless lifestyle get the best of him and on one night in 1989, he wrapped his Corvette around a telephone phone and broke his left leg so bad; it took six separate operations to get him walking again.

After unceremoniously retiring from boxing, Tommy spent the next five years wandering through life spending money, doing drugs, and avoiding the sport he loved. He had become a leper to the boxing industry and an outcast to many of the people who had once respected him and his abilities. Finally, in the fall of 1995, he knew he was heading down a road that would eventually lead to his death and decided it was time to make a change. He used the last little bit of money he had left to his name and flew out to Pittsburgh to see the only person that ever really understood him.

My father was never the type for turning away one of his own, so he offered Tommy room and board in Pittsburgh and an opportunity to get clean at a local clinic. The only condition would be that once he completed his rehabilitation, he would have to stay in town long enough to prove his sobriety. What Tommy didn’t know, was that he would be doing this under my father’s watchful eye at the gym as a visiting coach.

Once clean, Tommy found his home again in the gym. He got back to the basics and soon realized (to his own and many other people’s surprise) that he was a far better coach than he ever was a boxer. When my father closed shop in 1997, Tommy had earned enough in coaching to move back out west and open The Hard Knocks Gym. Since then, he has established himself as one of the best striking instructors in the game and his gym has become a haven for boxers and MMA fighters alike.

Deep down, I knew it wouldn’t take much to get a favor out of him and I can’t say I was surprised when I made the call and he very graciously welcomed me to his gym and offered to host our roster evaluations and fighter try-outs.

Tommy Daniels: “So how’s the old man?”

Will Davidson: “He’s doing good, getting plenty of sun.”

Tommy Daniels: “Ha, your Dad always did hate the cold. He’d always complain when I had fights in Chicago, always had something to say about the weather.”

Will Davidson: “That sounds about right.”

Tommy Daniels: “So kid, like I said, you take as long as you need today. I’ve got our schedule cleared for the next three days, so the place is all yours.”

Will Davidson: “Tommy, I can’t say again how much we appreciate this under such short notice.”

Tommy Daniels: “Kid, anytime."

(They shake hands)

Tommy Daniels: “Well, you said you wanted to get started at seven o’clock sharp and I heard your little assistant in there rounding up the troops, so you better get to it. If you need anything, I’ll be in my office.”

Will Davidson: “Well actually…”

Tommy Daniels: “What is it kid?”

Will Davidson: (Doing his best Tommy Daniels impression) “Well, I was hoping you would give me a hand beating some of these guys and gals up…”

Tommy Daniels: (Smiling) “Well then, let’s get to work.”

Date: Thursday, January 14, 1999

Time: 7:00 A.M.

Location: Tommy Daniel’s Hard Knocks Gym, Los Angeles, CA

(Addressing majority of the XCC roster)

Shelly Watkins: “Thank you everyone for joining us this morning; I would also like to thank you again for filling out the personal information packets I handed out when you came in.”

(Clearing her throat)

“At this time I would like introduce the new President of Xtreme Cage Combat, Mr. William Davidson Jr.”

(Will steps forward with Tommy Daniels to his left and two men yet to be introduced on his right)

Will Davidson: “Ladies and Gentleman of Xtreme C.C, it’s great to see all of you bright and early this morning."

“I wanted to take a second here to introduce myself, the gentlemen standing next to me, and explain what my expectations are with today’s gathering.

First and foremost, by now I hope you know who I am and why I’m here. As President of this company, it will be my responsibility to shape our business in way that is profitable, popular, and revolutionary. In fact, our attitude moving forward as a company will be that of an “act as if” mentality.

Now, I’m sure some of you are asking yourself exactly what does “act as if” really mean.

Well, I’m going to tell you…

It means that you “act as if” you work for best damn mixed martial arts company in the world.

It means that you “act as if” you are a champion, regardless if the strap is over your shoulder or not.

And, It means that you “act as if” every one of your fights in the cage might be your last... and you never quit until it's over.

It will be with this mind set and this mind set alone that we move forward and become exactly what we are capable of becoming:

"The best pound for pound MMA company in the world."

(XCC Roster begins to applaud)

"Now, with that said, I would like to introduce these guys standing next to me and some changes that will be taking place over the next week."

(Pointing to Tommy Daniels)

"This first guy requires no introduction; he’s a former Welterweight contender and is now proud owner of this facility. Today he will be helping with your evaluations and will be pushing you mentally and physically. I give you, Mr. Tommy Daniels."

(XCC Roster begins to applaud)

"This first man to my right, will be one you all with grow to know and will be working with as long as you’re an employee of this company. He will answer to me and only to me. He will be working as a liaison between you and myself, you will address him with any concerns you feel will be important for me to know. Joseph Steven is a former intern for Bristow Gyms, a former scout for GAMMA, and my good friend. You will respect him and you will work with him as our new Director of Talent. Joseph, please say hello to everyone.”

Joseph Steven: “Hey everyone, I’m looking forward to meeting with all of you over the next couple weeks. Please be sure to introduce yourself later this afternoon and let me say again, just how excited I am to be here."

Will Davidson: “Thank You Joseph, Now moving forward, this next gentleman is another dear friend of mine. He will be serving as my Contracts Coordinator: Mr. Jan De Mol. Jan, if you could please take a moment to explain how things will be moving forward in terms of contracts at XCC."

Jan de Mol (Speaking with a strong European accent):

“It was brought to my attention earlier this week, that all of you are currently operating on standard non-exclusive fight contracts.

Moving forward and prior to our next event, everyone in this room will be renegotiating their contract. In order to promote fairness, your new contract will start at the current amount of fights you are currently scheduled to fight in your current contract.

(Some audible groans and scuttled chatter comes out of listening fighters)

The only new major stipulation will be that XCC fighters will be on exclusive contracts from this point forward. This meaning that you will only be fighting for XCC while under contract."

(The mob of fighters start loudly talking amongst themselves in initial disgust)

James Busfield: (Yelling from the back of the group) “And how is that fair!?”

Sebastian Fernandez: “Yeah, how can you just go and break our current contracts!?”

Jan de Mol: "Well, Mr. Busfield and Mr. Fernandez, if you would have allowed me to finish, I could have explained our reasoning and our method for these new contracts."

(The crowd quiets to listen)

Jan de Mol: “All fighters will be operating on exclusive contracts, because 1. It protects the amount of time and money we are going to be investing in your development, 2. It clearly shows us that you are fully committed to what we are trying to accomplish here.

Now for those of you who feel that your services would be better appreciated elsewhere, we are prepared to buy-out the remainder of your contract and you will be free to sign with whatever company you see fit.

If what I have proposed seems unreasonable to anyone here, please take this moment to gathering your belongings and make your way to the exit."

(The groups of fighters look at each other for a moment and then turn their attention back to Jan)

"Very well, Today’s evaluations will be the first opportunity for you to prove your worth to myself and Mr. Davidson, so please take this seriously, thank you."

(Will steps forward)

Will Davidson: "Excellent, so are there any questions?"

(The crowd shakes their collective head)

Will Davidson: “Good, now as far as today goes, we will be using this time to gather some background information from you, we will be testing your cardio and I would like to see some light-sparing in the ring. Shelly has taken the liberty of organizing you by division, so if I could see the Lightweight fighters in the film room for their interviews, the Featherweights can hit the cardio area with Mr. Daniels, and the Women's division will be in the ring with Mr. Steven."

"Let's get to it people."

Fighter Breakdown: Bretton is currently the XCC Lightweight Champion. He loves to use armbars to finish his fights and has decent strikes in terms of technique. While he is the current champion, his days could be numbered due to his weaknesses of being predictable and not being a powerful striker.

"What A Week..."

Date: Sunday, January 17, 1999

Time: 6:00 A.M.

Location: Will Davidson’s Home Office, Los Angeles, CA

What a busy weekend…

I literally had been moving non-stop since our roster evaluations on Thursday morning. The event seemed to have gone off without a hitch and I was pleased with how our people reacted to the many changes taking place around XCC. I was also pleased to find out that our roster boasted twice the amount of talent I originally thought existed. After having Tommy literally beat the hell out of our guys for about six hours, I was able to find some fighters who are still very green, but have the athletic ability and work ethic to be very good in the months and years to come. In terms of contracts, I honestly thought that Jan was going to drive many of them out of the building and in search of a new employer, but in the long run I think they understand why we had to make the move to exclusive contracts and how it not only protects our investments, but also gives them a guaranteed pay check. In the end, I would end up bending a little on the mandate and decided to keep Troy, Stiller, Champion, and Cruz on Associate contracts. These are four fighters that I originally considering cutting, but in order to keep some stability in the locker room, decided to let them earn their spot and fight out the remainder of their contracts.

Shortly after the evaluations, I had the opportunity to sit down with our three division champions and talk shop for about an hour. Since this was the first meeting of its type, I didn’t expect them to have much to talk about, but to my surprise they did have some good ideas. The first came from Phil Ziskie, who suggested that we take more of a theatrical approach to our event presentation. This of course was something that I had rolled around in my own head, but until this point, the people at Alpha-1 were really the only ones in our industry experimenting with advance lighting, video-screens, and in some cases even pyrotechnics. While I tried to assure Phil that we had to learn to crawl before we could walk, I did agree to try a few new things.

At the next event, we would try to give the fighters some time during the weigh-ins to answer some questions from the press in the hope that maybe a sound bite or two could help build the heat around the upcoming fight. Next, instead of the standard boxing-type entrance, we would let the fighters choose an entrance song for their walk to the cage. Lastly, I knew Vince was personal friends with J.K. Stallings and had other connections at the Hollyweird Grappling Company, so I would make a call and see if they had an older lighting rig they could part with, so on fight night we could brighten up the Hazard Pavilion. Nicholas Britton made a point that if everyone was going to be fighting on exclusive contracts, that at some point we should consider providing some type of medical insurance. This was another good suggestion, but one that I had to deflect for the time being. While I agreed and was more than concerned about our production value and the health of our fighters, I couldn’t go writing checks with my mouth, that Vince’s coffers weren’t ready to cash.

The final item discussed during our meeting would be the ranking system that would be implemented after our event in April. My plan would be to use our first three events of the year to evaluate our talent, so that moving forward I could have each division’s top ten fighters ranked by ability. It would be my intentions to have new rankings released every three months (four times a year) so our roster would know exactly where they stood in terms of their competition.

On Friday and Saturday, we hosted about 100 different fighters at Tommy’s gym. We got a little lucky in the respect that between Vince’s plane and my father’s jet, we were able to bring in some of the prospects from Asia and Europe that I had been watching tape on these last few months. All of our invited fighters were all given the opportunity to prove themselves through the same gauntlet we had put our own roster through. I’m proud to say that with the help of Tommy, Joseph Steven, and our newly hired scout Jordan Carpe; we were able to find about 45 individuals that will be working with Jan over next couple weeks to iron out the details and become part of the XCC family. These fighters ranged in terms of abilities and experience, but all had the one common thread we are looking for: dedication. I had asked Shelly to put together a press packet providing some information on our new hires and she’s assured me it will be ready by Monday morning.

While this past weekend had been exhausting, it was exciting feeling to know we were starting to turn the page and that our first event was just around the corner. It was also a reassuring feeling to know that I had my staff in place and that all that was left on my list was to go over a few things with Josh (easier said than done) on the finances and then meet with Vince to fill him on all the new changes.

All in all, I felt we were just about there…

New Hires

Date: Monday, January 18, 1999

Time: 5:57 A.M.

Location: XCC Headquarters, Los Angeles, CA

I had hit the gym and was already enjoying my first cup of coffee by the time I walked into my office. It was nice to see a few familiar faces on the way in, as apparently Shelly had circulated my memo addressing our new business hours. Now, I'm not easily impressed, but coming in this morning to find Shelly's completed press packet on my desk was something I found pretty impressive. Taking a seat at my desk, I glanced down to nicely hand written note:

Mr. Davidson,

I have constructed the press packet you requested last week featuring our newly added fighters and personnel. Please review my work this morning and let me know of any changes you would like made before we release this to the press.

Thank You,

Shelly Watkins
Executive Assistant
XCC

Turning to the first page of the packet, I thought to myself how nice it was to be working with such professionals...

Final Preparations

Date: Monday, February 22, 1999

Time: 8:00 A.M.

Location: XCC Headquarters, Los Angeles, CA

The last few weeks had gone by in a flash…

I couldn’t put into words how exciting it had been on a personal level to be putting the final touches on our first event of 1999. In the last few weeks, our headquarters had a certain buzz around it and my staff in particular felt our first event had the promise to go over well and would give us the momentum we would need moving forward. The local press as well as the MMA community had also begun to catch on to some of the changes that have been taking place around our organization. Sean Bruckman, a reporter from Blurcat.com (a recently established internet news source for all things MMA) was set to be spending the next couple days with me around the office as well as meeting with some of the fighters on our first card to get some pre-fight thoughts and comments for his highly followed column “Bruckman’s Breakdown.” I felt the upcoming press would help our cause, as going into the final planning week our ticket sales were still looking a little soft, something that had been brought to my attention more than once.

That aside, I’ll go ahead and fill you in on what’s been happening around here lately…

A few weeks ago I met with my brother Josh (XCC’s CFO) to discuss our finances. I have to say the meeting went about as well as I expected it to go. I had intended to receive some initial backlash for the mass hiring spree I had incorporated and the additions I made to our event production department; so I wasn’t surprised when both of these items were addressed and condemned for their associated costs. I tried to explain to Josh, that in order to be successful we were going to have to spend money and attempt to be innovative in areas where our competitors were not willing to go; This was my reasoning for expanding our divisions with new hires, purchasing a $10,000 lighting system for Hazard Pavilion from JK Stallings, and bringing in a production team to film our next event for VHS distribution.

Our meeting more or less turned into an hour of agreeing to disagree and in the closing moments, Josh informed me that he would be recommending to Vince, a company-wide spending freeze until results from our current expenditures were seen. The new information left me annoyed and feeling that many of my best ideas were being met with prejudice that steamed from Josh’s personal feelings for me and not his sound business experience. While very little during our meeting was keeping me from jumping over his desk and mauling him, in the back of my mind I felt as long we could continue to progress towards becoming a staple in the MMA industry, many of my ideas would come to fruition in good time with Vince’s inevitable support. I decided in that moment that I would catch more flies with sugar than vinegar and supported my brother’s decision. I agreed to limit my spending and ideas for expansion until results were seen over the next six months. At that time, we would meet again and evaluate how XCC had progressed. Prior to calling the meeting to a close, Josh reinforced my previously felt feelings and issued a final warning by saying that if at any time he felt I was putting his job or the company in a dangerous position he would directly inform Vince of my decisions. Once again I bit my tongue and assured him that any decisions I would be making in the near future, would only be made with the company’s best long term intentions in mind.

My meeting with Josh was followed by a meeting with Vince a week later that featured a completely different tone. Vince assured me that he was in support of my expansion ideas and that he had enjoyed meeting all of our new additions during their contract negotiations, which took place at XCC headquarters. Vince also agreed that dressing up the Pavilion with proper lighting and some new banners along with filming the event was something that should help in the process of distinguishing XCC as a different type of MMA product. While I would like to say the meeting was entirely positive, Vince did take the time to express some concerns with my spending habits (a seed undoubtedly planted by Josh). He agreed that we needed to spend money to make money, but also wanted to make the point that I wasn’t working for GAMMA anymore and that if we were going to grow as a company, it wouldn’t be over-night. He didn’t criticize my urgency, but did ask that I kept a “brick by brick” mentality when making decisions this point forward. I felt his reasoning was very well-balanced and I agreed to take things slow the next few months.

Over the course of the last few weeks, I have spent majority of my time in our “war-room” with Joseph Steven and Jordan Carpe mapping out our first event. The plan was to develop a card that would feature three preliminary bouts and five featured fights. The preliminary matches would give us the opportunity to evaluate some of our younger talent, while four of the “featured” bouts would build momentum towards our main event, which would have one of our division champions defending their title. All in all, I felt confident about our card and was looking forward to discussing it in depth with Mr. Bruckman and Blurdog.com throughout the week…

Breaking News: The most active organization in the last month has seen their entire front office retooled, over forty new fighters join their three divisions, and their newly appointed President Will Davidson Jr. address his MMA competitors with a word of warning in the press. Our very own Sean Bruckman will be featuring XCC in an article later this month breaking down their first event under new management.

Roster News: Due to the volume of new additions, please be sure take a look at XCC’s Roster Guide featured on Blurcat.com. Bruckman’s Breakdown (XCC Special Edition)

By: Sean Bruckman

“Welcome to Xtreme Cage Combat, the pinnacle of Mixed Martial Arts on the western seaboard.” This was the welcome I received from a very proud, yet charmingly sarcastic Will Davidson Jr. earlier this week when I spent a day in the office with him and members of his organization to discuss their upcoming event being held later this week. It has only been a little over four weeks since Will assumed his current post as President of Xtreme Cage Combat and he hasn’t taken his time shaking things up. In just his first month, he has hired a new executive staff, many of whom were co-workers with him during a brief stint in GAMMA, others former classmates and friends from early in his academic career. He has rebuilt a dwindling roster with nearly forty fresh new faces, many of whom can be found on Blurcat.com’s “100 Best Prospects” list. Davidson has also found time to begin developing a new department within his organization to work primarily on improving the presentation of XCC’s product for their fans. In short, he has had his hands full trying to take a small, locally successful company to the next level.

According to Joseph Steven, the newly appointed Director of Talent Relations “He never sleeps.” I would have to say this is a fair assumption, because after a day in the office with the “man that never sleeps” I was starting to think the same thing. Davidson’s days start bright and early as he hits the gym by five and is in the office answering questions and concerns by six. The Tuesday morning I visited, I witnessed him handle everything from what kind of beer would be served at Hazard Pavilion to how Lightweight Champion Nicholas Bretton would be arriving to the event. He claims he has a staff in place to handle “minor decisions”, but with his reputation riding on whether his first event goes off without a hitch, Davidson finds himself involved in just about everything that’s happening around XCC headquarters.

As our day progressed, I had the opportunity to speak with Davidson on a number of different topics, ranging from the pressure that comes with being a Bristow to his feelings on XCC’s new home “Hazard Pavilion.”

When asked about the pressure associated with his family:

“The pressure is bearable, believe it or not (while smiling). I mean obviously there are expectations I have for myself and I feel I meet those on most days. I’m grateful for the family I come from and for the lessons I’ve learned about working in this type of business and working with people in general.”

When asked about what is was like taking over as President of XCC, a position previously held by Davidson’s brother Josh Bristow:

“It was an exciting feeling to know I was going to have the opportunity to work with Vince Whiteman and steer his solid company towards a bright future. I felt my brother Josh did a great job assembling a solid roster and generally getting XCC off the ground. If it wasn’t for their initial hard work, I wouldn’t have this opportunity now.”

When asked why Josh Bristow resigned as President after only one year of service:

“Well, I think that’s a question that could honestly be better answered by Josh himself. I can’t speculate, but I can only suggest that Josh felt his services would be put to better use as our Chief Financial Officer.”

When asked about XCC’s newly renovated state of the art venue, the Hazard Pavilion:

“It’s a beautiful place to watch a fight. Our current plan is to make California our base of operations and I can’t say again how exciting it is to have such a nice venue for our fans. When Vince told me the initial story for why he rebuilt the building, I thought it was amazing that he wanted to rebuild a part of Los Angeles that his family had originally be involved with in 1905. I can only hope that our history will one day match the history of this building.”

As our day came to an end with a tour of the new facilities, I took the opportunity to thank Davidson for his hospitality and inside view of how things were now being handled at XCC. The rest of my afternoon would be spent meeting with the fighters on February 27th’s card, including the Lightweight Champion “The Blond Bomber” Nicholas Bretton.

THE BREAKDOWN

XCC 13: Bretton vs. Gilbert
February, 27th, 1999
Opening Bell: 8:00pm
The Hazard Pavilion
Los Angeles, CA

Preliminarily Fight #1 (Featherweight Division)

The Fighters
Guilherme "Zoom" de Barros (0-0) vs. Louie "The Featherweight Phenom" Sullivan (0-0)

The Match-Up
This should prove to be an exciting fight as both fighters are making their professional debut. Sullivan is the more experienced of the two and his boxing background should prove dividends. Barros has Muay Thai training along with limited experience in a few other focuses of martial arts. He's currently a practitioner of many and a master of none.

The Prediction
I see Sullivan ending this fight with his stand-up within the first two rounds.

Pre-Fight Comments

Barros: "I do my talking in the cage. (Translated from Portuguese)"

Sullivan: "I'm looking forward to the opportunity to fight Barros. He can hurt you with his stand-up if you let him, unfortunately I'll be dropping him to the mat before he gets a chance to get started."

Preliminarily Fight #2 (Lightweight Division)

The Fighters
Drauzio "Predator" Simaan 5-0 (0-0 XCC) vs. Matsudaira Satoh 5-1 (0-0 XCC)

The Match-Up
Both of these fighters are making their XCC debut. Satoh is a big Lightweight, who has fought at Welterweight in the past. He's got excellent cardio and will be looking to take this fight to ground. Simaan is also a machine when it comes to cardio, but he will be looking to keep the fight standing up if possible, as he does the most damage when he can strike with knees and low-kicks.

The Prediction
I see Simaan finishing this fight by knockout with his stand-up.

Pre-Fight Comments

Simman: "Satoh can't handle my knees and kicks, this fight will be over quickly (Translated from Portuguese)."

Satoh: "I'm going to look to take this fight to the ground and force him to submit. He's going to want to stand and trade, but he's not going to know what hit him, when I have him on the ground in an armbar (Translated from Japanese)."

Preliminarily Fight #3 (Women's Division)

The Fighters
Daniela Sadorra (0-0) vs. Nina "Liberty" Belle (0-0)

The Match-Up
Both of these fighters are making their professional debuts. Sadorra has a kickboxing background and a no quit attitude that will keep her in this fight. Belle is an all-out striker with great cardio, who's going to look stand and trade blows until one of these ladies hit the mat.

The Prediction
I see Sadorra outlasting Belle and finishing this fight by knockout with her stand-up.

Pre-Fight Comments

Sadorra: "I realize how great of an opportunity this is and I won't disappoint the XCC fans."

Belle: "I wanna throw down and so does Daniela. I hope the XCC fans are looking forward to an old fashion fist fight, because the only time this fight will be on the ground is when one of us is unconscious."

Feature Fight #1 (Lightweight Division)

The Fighters
"The Sharpshooter" Georges Nouri 9-1 (0-0 XCC) vs. "The Wrecking Ball" Lucas Mueller 7-1 (0-0 XCC)

The Match-Up
Both of these fighters are making their XCC debut. Nouri is incredibly dangerous with his submissions and will be looking to take this fight to the ground from the start. Mueller also works best from the ground as he'll look for the takedown and then an opportunity to unleash some brutal ground and pound.

The Prediction
I see Nouri forcing Mueller to tap out and ending this fight with a submission.

Pre-Fight Comments

Nouri: "I've got three words for Mueller, Tap or Snap."

Mueller: "I honestly can't wait to beat the hell out of this guy. All I have heard for the last two weeks is how he's going to tap me out and I'm looking forward to the first chance I get to drop him and make him bleed."

Feature Fight #2 (Featherweight Division)

The Fighters
Dominic "The Smash" Ash 5-0 (0-0 XCC) vs. Roger "Jumpin" Bean 2-0 (0-0 XCC)

The Match-Up
Both of these fighters are making their XCC debut. Ash is a former professional boxer and those skills will carry his through this fight. Bean has great cardio and rarely tires, but his stand-up is not nearly as good as Ash's.

The Prediction
Ash ends this fight with a knockout via stand-up.

Pre-Fight Comments

Ash: "Roger, all you have to do is ask the five other guys I've faced how good I am."

Bean: "In this case, pride will come after the fall."

Feature Fight #3 (Women's Division)

The Fighters
Alison "Dirty Angel" Beattie 6-1 (0-0 XCC) vs. "The Blond Bombshell" April Watson 5-0 (1-0 XCC)

The Match-Up
April Watson is the face of the XCC Women's Division. She will be using this fight to show Will Davidson, she's ready to face champion Karen Curtis. Beattie is a talented kick-boxer, who always finds a way to finish a fight.

The Prediction
Watson ends this fight with a knockout via stand-up.

Pre-Fight Comments

Watson: "I respect Alison's skills, but at the end of the day she's still just one more person blocking me from the title. I'm going to treat this fight the same way I've treated my last five, finish it early."

Beattie: "April thinks I'm just another bump in her road to the championship. She's going to learn really quick that I'm not a pushover."

Feature Fight #4 (Featherweight Division)

The Fighters
"The Tropical Tornado" Azor Portela Nunes 21-3 (2-0 XCC) vs. Sammy "The Stealth Shark" Gaffigan 15-1 (2-0 XCC)

The Match-Up
This fight could potentially produce a contender for the featherweight championship. These two fighters are both known for putting on a show and this fight should not disappoint.

The Prediction
Nunes ends this fight with a knockout via stand-up.

Pre-Fight Comments

Nunes: "I respect Gaffigan and I'm looking forward to beating him."

Gaffigan: "The guy has five or six names, luckily it will only take one punch to end this fight."

The Main Event (Lightweight Championship)

The Fighters
"The Blonde Bomber" Nicholas Bretton 8-5 (2-0 XCC) vs. "The Cleveland Stormer" Moss Gilbert 5-1 (0-0 XCC)

The Match-Up
I like this match-up and expect Bretton to look for the early takedown and submission. Gilbert has quick hands and will be looking to stand, he could have trouble avoiding the takedown since his sprawl is still under development.

The Prediction
Bretton retains his championship as Gilbert taps due to a submission early in the fight.

Pre-Fight Comments

Bretton: "I will enter the Pavilion with the belt and I'll be leaving with it."

Gilbert: "I'd be lying if I said I expected my first fight in the XCC to be a title fight. I'm looking forward to meeting Nick in the cage and becoming the new Lightweight Champion"

OOC: The first event write-up should be posted tomorrow, if you have predictions please feel free to share them. -JPA
