The show opens up with the Titan’s of Wrestling already in the ring, where Hollywood Hogan has a microphone.......he tells the rest of his group that right now, every single one of them has a job to do.....and that job.....

”........is to get that WCW Title back around my waist brothers......see, everybody knows, that the Titans of Wrestling are the true power in professional wrestling.....and no matter who Vince Russo and the WCW (yes, you heard him, “the” WCW.....”the” World Championship Wrestling apparently) throw at us, it doesn’t matter.......I already got rid of old Flexy Lexy, he didn’t cut the mustard dude......now tonight, it’s down to my two main men.....my Generals.....The Macho Man and JPL himself, Jean Paul (Jean Paul.....that just doesn’t work for me, that needs to change) to take out the little Stinger, and that big bad stinky Giant......then that just leaves Russo’s little surprise, the Hot Rod......and God knows I can kick his scrawny little ass, in a wrestling ring AND in Hollywood brothers......”

......Levesque takes the microphone, telling Hogan not to sweat it.....because with Hogan, Savage.....and him, still in the WCW Title tournament, there’s only one place that belt is going, and that’s back within the camp of the Titans of Wrestling.....Hogan is pleased to hear that, but is sure to reiterate that it’s coming back into the folds of the Titans of Wrestling......and back around his waist, to which Levesque reply’s with a non-committal ”sure, that’s what I meant” before handing the mic to Savage......

”.......brother, brother, brother, brother.....yeah.....have no fear, have no fear....the big bad Giant is gonna come tumbling down you can be sure of that......and as for the Stinger, yeah, the Stinger is gonna find out something that he should have learned a long time ago.......and that’s that you don’t mess with the Titans of Wrestling.....not if you wanna live, yeah.....

......he might have lost his colour, but at least he’s finally seeing things in black.....and white......but all the face paint in the World, ain’t gonna stop the Macho Man from stopping the Stinger Man.....you dig?.....”

......Hogan digs apparently, pleased that everyone is singing from the same hymn book, before telling the Nasty Boys and The Enforcer that they have their own roles to play.....with the Nasty’s capturing the WCW Tag Team Titles back......and Ray Traylor? Well The Enforcer is there to do exactly that, enforce the wishes of the Titans.....and bringing home the WCW World and Tag Titles are tight at the top of the Titans wishes today.

WCW United States Championship Quarter-Final Match

The first match of the evening sees Diamond Dallas Page look to regain the United Stares Championship that he never actually lost in the first place, when he goes one on one with brash young upstart Buff Bagwell. Bagwell spent the majority of last year teaming with former Headshrinker Samu of all people, even capturing the WCW Tag Team Titles along the way......(is there anyone he has teamed with that he HASN'T captured the Tag Titles with at this point? Bagwell is somewhat of a Tag Team specialist as Schiavone points out).....

.....but now he’s flying solo, and looking to capture his first singles Championship.....unfortunately he’s a bit of a vain lad our Buff, and spends a bit too long flexing for Kimberly on the outside, giving Page ample time to catch him and drop him with the Diamond Cutter to move one step closer to regaining his gold.

Winner: Diamond Dallas Page

Page and Kimberly are met by Mean Gene in the aisle way, who first shills his hotline (1-900-909-9900 in case you were wondering) stating that things might not be as rosy as everyone thinks “up north” and he has some exclusive news on a few contracts that are due to expire very soon.....and the word is, there might be a few new faces around here before very long, so call the hotline now.....

....he then speaks to Dallas about his chances of recapturing the WCW United States Championship......Page says there no chance him NOT recapturing the United States Title.....he says he never lost it to begin with, so winning it back won’t be a problem.....that’s one down, two to go.....Page says he shocked the world when he decided to become a professional wrestler at the age of 35......he shocked them again when he captured his first Championship, the Television Title....and the third time was the charm when he shocked the world to win the WCW US Belt........maybe now people will be a little less shocked at what Diamond Dallas Page can accomplish.....when he becomes a two time, two time United States Champion......

......from there Eddie Guerrero comes walking out to tell Page to forget about being a two time anything, other than a two time loser, because it’s time for the Guerrero name to mean something around here, starting by taking that United States Title home.....

.....nothing groundbreaking here, just your standard two guys claiming they’re going to win the belt promo.....however there are still some big names in this tournament, so there is a good chance that NEITHER man will walk out with the gold.

The Blue Bloods are our next, Lord Steven Regal, Earl Robert Eaton and The Duke, Douglas Williams......Regal does the talking, stating that he is only one win away from taking the WCW Television Championship home to Her Majesty The Queen.....but it’s an absolute travesty that neither The Earl or The Duke have been informed WHO their opponent in tonight’s WCW Tag Team Quarter Final match are......but it doesn’t matter, because regardless of who it is, Britannia shall soon rule World Championship Wrestling......for Queen and Country........

......and to the surprise of no-one (since the news of their departure from the WWF has already broke) its Hawk.....it’s Animal.....it’s the Legi.....uhmm.....it’s the Road Warriors!....and it’s amazing what a change of scenery can do.......because the Warriors get a huge pop ahead of this encounter with the Blue Bloods.

WCW Tag Team Championship Quarter-Final Match

The poor Blue Bloods weren’t expecting this.....and clearly the Warriors were pumped to be back in WCW, because they absolutely flew out of the starting blocks from the moment the bell sounded and stiffed the crap out of The Duke and Earl Robert.....you would imagine that this was nothing like Douglas Williams has ever experienced, a relative newcomer to the American scene after toiling his ware in Europe for the last few years.......welcome to America Doug.....and welcome to World Championship Wrestling.......and that loud thud you heard was your body crashing into the mat, after the Doomsday Device crashed the Blue Bloods out of the Tag Team Title tournament.

Winner(s): The Road Warriors

Mean Gene is back out and back in the ring with a microphone to speak with WCW’s newest team, The Road Warriors.....he asks them first and foremost, what they are doing here? Animal sprays spittle across the ring as he screams that the Road Warriors are back where they belong, the Road Warriors are back in the number one wrestling company in the world......and the Road Warriors are here to take the WCW Tag Team Championships ”.......TELL EM HAWK.....”

“..........WELLLLLLL......MEAN GENE.......WE HEARD A LITTLE RUMOUR SEE......THAT THE WCW WAS WHERE THE BIG BOYS PLAY.......WELL THATS KIND OF THE PROBLEM.......BECAUSE THE ROAD WARRIORS HAVE BEEN UP NORTH PLAYING WITH ‘BOYS’ FOR FAR TOO LONG.........BOY’S IN THE RING AND BOYS IN THE OFFICE........THATS PROBLEM NUMBER ONE.......PROBLEM NUMBER TWO?......IS WE DON’T PLAY.......WE MAIM.....WE HURT.....WE DESTROY........WE SNACK ON DANGER AND WE DINE ON DEATH......AND THATS BAD NEWS FOR ALL THOSE TEAMS IN THE BACK THERE.......BECAUSE THE ROAD WARRIORS ARE HUNGRY.......BUT DON’T WORRY......BECAUSE WHEN WE’RE DONE PICKING OUR TEETH WITH YOUR BONES.....WE’RE GOING TO USE YOUR WORTHLESS HIDES TO POLISH UP OUR BRAND NEW WCW TAG TEAM TITLES.........UHHHHHHH......WHAT A RUSHHHH!!!........”

WCW United States Championship Quarter-Final Match

Last week Mike Awesome assaulted the big man Vader.....claiming that he was going to show the world that he was the best big man here in WCW......this week he gets the chance to back up that claim.....as he faces Vader’s occasional tag team partner.....(and former WCW Champion!)......Bam Bam Bigelow.....”best big man in the business” was a title that many handed out to Bam Bam Bigelow over the years.....the Beast from the East that could take to the air with the best of them.......fast forward 10 years and just as many people are stating the same thing about Mr. Awesome......a super heavyweight that can fly like a cruiserweight.....

......this match was (excuse the pun) awesome......and easily the match of the night, thanks in part to the fact that these two huge men have phenomenal chemistry in that ring......along with an impressive display of strength from Awesome to finish the match out......because as Bam Bam climbed to the top rope, looking for that signature moonsault.....Awesome sprang to his feet and nailed him in the small of the back, before manoeuvring him into a Powerbomb position......running across the length of the ring and delivering a sit down Powerbomb for the one, the two and the three.

Winner: Mike Awesome
Rating: B+

If the crowd were (surprisingly) hot for that mach, they were even (more surprisingly) hotter for the aftermath......as not content with proving he was the better man on the night, Awesome looked to book Bigelow a place in the same hospital room as his partner Vader......turning the violence level up to a whole other level (by WCW standards anyway) as he reached under the ring until he found what he was looking for.....a wooden table.......which he drags back into the ring, setting it up as a groggy Bam Bam is pulling himself to his feet......he nails the Beast from the East with a boot to the midsection.........and drives him through the table with another Powerbomb to fully make his mark on the evening

WCW United States Championship Quarter-Final Match

Back to in ring action, as our final US Title quarter final match features one mat technician in Chris Benoit, and one solid and reliable hand in VK Wallstreet (if you’re looking to see an expertly applied rear chin lock then IRS is your man).....it was a decent little match, but in the end Wallstreet did what Wallstreet does best......he put the better man over, submitting to the Crippler Crossface to see Benoit advance to a Semi-Final clash with Eddie Guerrero.

Winner: Chris Benoit

We head to the back now, where Mean Gene is back in the thick of it.....this time his guest is none other than Sting.....Sting is not the colourful character that he once was.....gone are the neon tights and bright face paint.....this is a darker Sting.....a different Sting......he tells Gene that there is only one man he is interested in getting his hands on here in WCW......and that man is the person that stabbed him in the back at Starrcade......the friend turned to foe......and the LAST.....in a very long line of people who have stepped over Sting to get what they want......well NO MORE......tonight, Sting is going to take out the Macho Man (another fake friend) ”.....and then Hollywood.....it’ll be you and me.....nowhere to run.....nowhere to hide......”

......with that the mammoth Giant walks into shot, along with the Total Package Lex Luger.....they tell Sting that they need to band together to fight off the evil forces of the Titans of Wrestling, saying that one man can’t defeat an army.......Sting’s answer to that is pretty simple ”.......no.......” Sting says that he doesn’t need friends.....he doesn’t need allies.....and he’s been stabbed in the back for the last time, telling both the Giant and Luger to ”......stay out of my way.....stay out of my business......and stay out of my life......”

WCW Championship Quarter-Final Match

While Sting might be happy to play the lone warrior, The Giant and Lex Luger have obviously decided that there are strength in numbers....because the Total Package is out to accompany the Giant for this one.....and that’s probably a good idea considering the fact that Levesque has The Enforcer, Ray Traylor In his corner.....

.....Hollywood might have decreed that Levesque must vanquish the Giant tonight.....but that’s a big ask.....because the Giant is a big, BIG man.....and he tosses the Titan around the ring like he’s nothing to open this match.....in fact the only thing that turns the tide for Levesque, is a strategically placed nightstick to the small of the back from Traylor, as the Giant is running the ropes......and from there the back is Levesque‘ main target, as he focuses all of his offence right there......

......it takes a lot to keep the big man down however......and it was only a matter of time before the Giant found his second wind.....which is the exact same time that Luger and Traylor begin battling on the outside......

......which is why he missed this man, Mike Awesome sliding into the ring with a steel chair......Levesque backs off at the sight of this Chair wielding madman, but it’s not the Titan that he’s here for.....it’s the Giant......because the Giant is the biggest big man going and number one on Awesome’s hit list......and he smashes the steel chair over the Giant’s head with such force that the steel dents, and the big man drops to one knee......Awesome tosses the chair to the mat telling Levesque to finish him off......which he does......with a Pedigree to the steel which is JUST enough for the one, the two.....and the three.

Winner: Jean Paul Levesque

WCW Championship Quarter-Final Match

It’s Main Event time, and it’s the man who stands alone, Sting, facing off against the man with an army behind him in the Macho Man Randy Savage.....the commentators talk about Sting’s refusal to be a part of any groups, teams or partnerships anymore, stating that the betrayal by Hulk Hogan was the straw that broke the camels back, after spending a good portion of his career pulling knives out of his back, to the point that it was becoming more of a case of who HASN’T stabbed Sting in the back rather than who HAS.....

......truthfully, this match was somewhat of a let down.....but then with the exception of the Awesome/Bigelow match, pretty much ALL the matches tonight were a bit of a let down.....granted the finish probably didn’t help, but still, I was expecting better from two established stars like this........as for how it finished, well the match ended much the way it began, with these two men fighting tooth and nail......Sting because a) Savage also stabbed him in the back, b) Savage is also a member of the Titans of Wrestling.....and c) if Sting really wants to get his hands on Hollywood Hogan, then he has to go through the Macho Man to do it........as for Savage, he’s fighting tooth and nail because a) he’s Randy Savage......and b) see a

......in all seriousness The Macho Man is under strict instructions to eliminate the Stinger from the World Title equation, because Hogan clearly wants no part of the Stinger......which is why, when the action spills to the floor, and both men find themselves spent on the concrete, the Nasty Boys come crawling out from under the ring......and as the official reaches a count of six, Sting lays out Savage with a new move that he has dubbed the Scorpion Death Drop......as the count reaches 9 however and Sting tries to re-enter the ring, Knobbs and Saggs each grab an ankle each of the Stinger, halting him in his tracks......and just like that, Sting is out......Savage is out.....and Hollywood Hogan has a bye, all the way to the finals of the WCW Title tournament.

Winner: No Contest (Double Count-Out)
Rating: B

Sting may have shunned the help of Lex Luger and the Giant earlier this evening, but he’s got to be questioning that decision about now, as the entire Titan’s of Wrestling make their way out from the back to put a beating on the Stinger. Hogan seems content to watch from the sidelines, at least until it becomes clear that Sting poses no further threat.....at which point he finally enters the ring, ordering the Nasty’s to pin him to the mat face down......while Hogan unhooks his weightlifting belt from around his waist, looking to deliver a whipping to the Stinger.....

......which is when the Warrior comes absolutely flying out of the back and charging down the aisle, taking out both Nasty Boys (who run to try and intercept him) on his way with a double running clothesline......apparently he never got the memo that the Stinger isn’t looking for any help around here, as he flys into the ring at 1000mph......Hogan, Savage and Levesque has the good sense to bail quickly to the outside.....The Enforcer however decides to stand his ground, but he probably should have followed his compadres to the outside, because The Warrior hits him with a barrage of clothesline’s, followed up with a flying shoulderblock to knock the man down, then crushing him with a running splash.....

......Traylor rolls to the floor out of harms way as The Warrior helps The Stinger to his feet.....Sting shrugs the Warrior off however, telling him that he didn’t ask for, nor does he want his help.....before abruptly climbing out of the ring and walking angrily to the back, leaving the Warrior to shake the ropes for the crowd, in between throwing threats at Hogan and the Titans as the show comes to a close.

Some thoughts on the show and WCW as a whole.......those match grades, wow they’re bad.....Sting/Savage and HHH/Giant only pulling out B’s is shocking, even with the screwy finishes, I’ve had A rated no-contests all day long with the WWF......Awesome/Bigelow being the match of the night was a huge surprise, even with the great chemistry note, it was dinged for booking decisions (obviously since Awesome is a midcarder and Bigelow is a main eventer) and dinged for short match time (around 10 minutes).....makes you wonder what a 20 minutes match with Bigelow going over would have graded at.....

......every single match was hit with the low backstage moral negative.....because the backstage, double wow......backstage is currently at 33% compared to the WWF’s 100%.......Hogan and Savage aren’t helping, because they have split the roster in half, with one side having a negative relationship with Hogan and the other side having a negative relationship with Savage......it’s going to take a lot of work to manage this sh!t storm.
