Week 4, July 1997
Birmingham-Jefferson Arena (Birmingham, Alabama)
ATT: 17,000
TV: 18.63
Announce Team: Tony Schiavone, Eric Bischoff and Mike Tenay

Quote:

The show opens this week with a quick recap of the events that closed LAST weeks show......with Sting finally coming to the aid of the Warrior, after weeks of persuasion, as the two as the two face painted superstars fought off the Titans of Wrestling.....much to Hollywood Hogans chagrin.......

......and as Tony Schiavone, Eric Bischoff and Mike Tenay welcome us to the show, those same two gentlemen make their way to the ring.......Sting is here......the Warrior is here.....and it looks as though they have something to say......or at least the Warrior does, Sting seems happy enough to brood silently behind him as he announces that......

”......last week the balance of power shifted....the dark clouds of tyranny parted and the black shadow of the Titans of Wrestling faded away to the returning power of professional wrestling.......the stars and moons aligned as the world bore witness to an alliance of the immortals......and that was only the beginning, as the Warriors and the Stingers unite one more time to fight the fight of the celestial beings.......Hollywood Hogan......Macho Man Randy Savage.....you think yourself the Mega Powers of Wrestling......but the true power lies here.....in my hand......and in Stings hand.......and at Road Wild.......you will both be in OUR hands.......”

......Sting works as translator here, saying that what Warrior is saying, is that at Road Wild, he and the Warrior want a match with Hogan and Savage.....but he’s sure to tell a (very hyperactive) Warrior, to not think for one second that he’s going to let his guard down......he’ll team with his former partner if it means getting one step closer to Hogan and the WCW Title, but if the Warrior even LOOKS like he’s going to stab the Stinger in the back, he won’t hesitate to put the man from parts unknown down........

.......that brings out the entire group of Titans, with Russo and Hogan openly laughing at the challenge......Russo says that Sting and the Warrior aren’t even a cohesive unit NOW, do they really think they have a chance against the two biggest names in professional wrestling history, Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage?.......

”......I’ll tell you what bro.....how about we give you a little tune up match tonight......you can beat The Enforcer and Jean Paul Levesque tonight......without killing each other......then maybe.....MAYBE, You’ll get a shot at the two main men at Road Wild......”

......neither Sting nor the Warrior seem to have a problem with that......Levesque doesn’t look to pleased to be put in a match without consultation mind, not that Hogan or Savage notice......with Hogan proclaiming that Sting should have left well alone.....

”......you should have kept well away from Titans business brother......because now, you’re gonna get the same treatment that your little buddy there, the Warrior, got last week dude......and not that you will.....but IF you manage to cheat your way past my main general Jean Paul Levesque and The Enforcer tonight, The Mega Powers of Professional Wrestling will make you wish you were never born man.......”

“.......Oh Yeahhhh, Stinger, Stinger, Stinger......all that face paint must have gone to your brain brother......must be cutting off the air supply, Yeah.......because even if you DON’T make it to Road Wild, the Macho Man has a butt kicking with your name on waiting after you hit me with that bat last week......and Warrior, we ain’t done by any means.....we’ve been partners.....we’ve been enemies yeah......but what I’ve always been, is better than you.....oh yeahhhh.......”

.......Russo tells the Warrior and Sting that the Titans COULD put an end to them right here, right now......but where would be the fun in that......but they WILL be seeing them......later tonight.

These two men both made a statement in regards to the Titans of Wrestling last week.....with Chris Benoit stating that he doesn’t need to kiss the ring of Hollywood to get to the top around here.....all he needs to do is do what he does best......wrestle.....

.....Buff Bagwell on the other hand said the complete polar opposite, stating that he can’t think of anything better than to nuzzle at the teat of Hollywood.....ok, he didn’t say that exactly.....but he certainly didn’t sound opposed to working under the wing of the Titans.......

.....considering the huge main event we have set for later in the evening, this match right here was actually the match of the night.....although I suppose that shouldn’t come as too much of a shock when you have a mat mechanic like Chris Benoit in there......Bagwell isn’t the best worker in the world, but he has charisma bursting out of his biceps, which isn’t a bad thing.....although it didn’t look like all the charisma in the world was going to save him here......especially when Benoit had him furiously submitting to the Crippler Crossface.......

........not that the official saw it.....because the Enforcer of the Titans randomly made his way down to the ring, distracting the attention of the referee long enough for Jean Paul Levesque to slide into the ring.....drag Benoit off Bagwell.....nail him with the Pedigree.....and roll Buff on top of his opponent......before grabbing Ray Traylor and heading back up the aisle, telling a nearby camera that Buff is clearly a smart man......because it’s better to work WITH the Titans rather than work AGAINST them.....and as the official turns his attention back to the match, there’s little else for him to do but count the three and declare Bagwell the winner.

Winner: Buff Bagwell

I don’t think that Buff is entirely sure what just happened.....what he DOES know however, is that he just picked up a big victory.....and he’s going to brag about it, treating the crowd to his ridiculous arm waving strut, before flexing those biceps.....he goes to exit the ring, but then sees Benoit still down.....and being the asshat that he is, he decides that he’s going to kick the man while he’s down.....stomping the crap out of the Crippler, before heading up to the second rope, waiting for Benoit to get back to his feet.....sizing him up for the Blockbuster........

......which is when Diamond Dallas Page comes running down the aisle....clearly still ticked off from last weeks post match attack on the part of Bagwell......Buff doesn’t see Page till it’s too late however, and DDP is able to slide into the ring and knock Buffs lights out with a Diamond Cutter right from the second rope......

......he goes over to help Benoit to his feet, but The Crippler doesn’t realise Page was there to help, and he nails DDP right between the eyes with a right hand, knocking him down to the mat, before stepping over him and storming to the back.

It’s The Renegade vs Craig Pittman now......The Renegade won with a splash from the top.......

......what? You were expecting more information? The match sucked, trust me, that’s all the information you need......it did serve it’s purpose though......

Winner: The Renegade
Rating: D

......which was to provide a victim for this mysterious masked man.....who runs down to the ring to put a beating on the unsuspecting Renegade.....who is soon joined by another smaller gentleman, who seems to be guiding the actions of this unknown newcomer.......(pstttt, between me and you......it’s enhancement talent Kanyon under a mask.....but don’t let the marks know that)......

......with his apparent manager directing traffic, the masked man destroys the poor (could have had a push if he didn’t p!ss me off) Renegade, finally finishing him off with a Sitout Reverse STO (that’s a Flatliner to you and me) as the announce team speculate on who these two men could be.

The Road Warriors are in action next, putting their tag team championships on the line against possibly the only team in WCW that can match them for pure brute strength, Meng and The Barbarian, the Faces of Fear.....

......you get exactly what you were expecting here, two big burly teams stuffing the hell out of each other.....unsurprisingly the match was hurt slightly by the lack of selling on display (go figure) but it was still the second best match on the whole show, with the Warriors winning after Hawk nailed Meng with a Clothesline from the top rope.

Winner(s): ......and Still WCW Tag Team Champions......The Road Warriors

From there we head to the back, where the Blue Bloods appears to be having high tea, as they sit around a table surrounded in little cucumber sandwiches, scones, miniature cakes and a fancy china tea set.......Mean Gene is there, looking highly confused by all of this, interrupting the gathering to as his Lordship whether or not he accepts the challenge of Rick Martel......to face him one on one for the Television Title.....and leave Earl Robert and The Duke in the back......Regal looks at Gene like he’s something he’s just stepped in, before quickly regaining his composure as a British Gentleman.......

”.........first of all Mr. Oakerlund, where are my manner’s......Robert, a cup of tea for this fine gentleman if you will.......”

.......the Earl pours Gene a cup, adding a splash of milk and two sugar cubes, while the Duke thrusts a plate of cucumber sandwiches at him......Gene takes the tea and has a sip.....grimaces.....and discreetly spits it back into the cup and placing both the tea and the sandwich back down......he again repeats his question, will Regal put the title on the line one more time or not?.....

”.......but of course my good man......if there’s one thing we brits are known for it’s our fighting spirit......and if Mr. Martel is so intimidated by these two fine figures of men, then I would be happy for them to remain in the back......after all, they are merely there in an advisory role after all.......”

.......an advisory role? Gene isn’t having any of that.....stating that not only did Eaton and Williams help him WIN the title, they have directly helped him to defend it ever since.....

”.......yes, they have advised me on the best strategy to guarantee victory.....what don’t you understand about that you cretin......”

.......Gene scoffs at that, stating that the two men in question have physically interfered in all of Regals matches......The Duke does a spit take at that, spraying tea across the table, telling Gene that he is besmirching their good names as Gentlemen and professionals.....and he may wish to employ the services of an optician, because clearly his eyesight is beginning to fail him......

......Regal tells Mean Gene that he can tell Martel that his challenge is accepted.....and when his Lordship stretches him into submission, he’ll have no more excuses to give......

”.......now if you don’t mind, we WERE trying to have a civilised conversation before you so rudely interrupted.....you know where the door is, off you pop there’s a good chap.....”

We’ve already seen the WCW Tag Team Titles successfully defended this evening.....now it’s time for the US Champion Eddie Guerrero to put his gold on the line, as he goes up against the masked Juventud Guerrera......it was a good match too, the only thing that let it down was Juvi’s popularity seeing how he’s still relatively new to the company......

......hopefully there will be a few new arrivals somewhere nearer to Eddies level arriving soon for him to feud with, because right now the only two faces at his level are really DDP and Chris Benoit, and both of those men are going to be otherwise occupied for the next month or two......anyway, to no surprise, Eddie wins with the Frog Splash.

Winner: ......and Still WCW United States Champion......Eddie Guerrero

“Goooooldberg.......Goooooldberg.......Goooooldber g........Goooold”......actually, we’re not there yet.......the man is certainly rising in stature but he’s still a nobody, even if he is at the midcard already........his victim tonight? The Disco Inferno......this was actually Goldbergs best and longest match......clocking in at an impressive 4:38.....although at least two minutes of that was Disco running for his life from the seemingly unstoppable rookie......Goldberg caught him in the end however......Spear.....Jackhammer.....Splat......G oodnight Disco.

Winner: Bill Goldberg

Gene is back on the stick next, backstage with Mike Awesome and his apparent manager, The Walking Riot, Missy Hyatt......Gene says that Awesome may have been making quite the name for himself recently......but he’s making quite the laundry list of enemies along the way.....and tonight, the Giant will be facing off against Vader.....but in reality, Gene thinks they would both rather be in there with Awesome.....

......Missy does the talking here.....that’s what she’s there for since Mike can’t talk for sh!t.....(he sure looks menacing in the background though).....she says that Gene couldn’t be more wrong.......The Giant, Vader, Bam Bam Bigelow......they might all THINK they want to be in there with Mike Awesome, but they’d be wrong......she says that Mike Awesome is the BEST big man in professional wrestling today......she pauses for a moment to run her hand over Awesome's chest, before saying that her client isn’t slow and lumbering like the Giant......he’s not overweight and past it like Vader.......he’s ALL man.......and if there’s one thing Missy knows, it’s a real man when she sees it......and one by one all the so called giants of WCW will come tumbling down.....

......Gene says that all of that may be true.....but no matter how big, strong or agile Mike Awesome is......how can one man possibly compete with the army of Giants chasing him?......

”........one man Gene?........who ever said that Mike was going to be alone?.......believe me, Missy Hyatt is too much woman for ANY one man to handle......even a man like Mike Awesome.........we’ll see you around Gene.....”

......with that Missy gives Gene a little wink, before she and Awesome walk off, as Gene sends us (slightly confused) back to ringside.

And speaking of The Giant and Vader, those two men are up next......and boy was it ugly.....

.....in fairness, it didn’t help that both guys were currently faces, but still......it was what it was.....two beasts pummelling each other, seemingly for the rather poor excuse that both men want a piece of Mike Awesome.....well, that and the fact that Vader and Bam Bam cost The Giant his match last week, all be it by an unintentional disqualification, but that doesn’t matter to the Giant......

......the finish didn’t help the match either.......because there wasn’t really one......both men want Mike Awesome.....

.......both men got Mike Awesome......at ringside that is.......as the self proclaimed best big man in the business made his way down the aisle with his manager......stopping just short of ringside to goad both Vader and The Giant........

........which is why neither man saw this monstrosity of a man sliding into the ring behind them with a steel chair......smashing both competitors in the back with the weapon as Awesome storms the ring to join in in the assault.......no contest folks (eye roll)

Winner: No Contest
Rating: B-

The beating continues, with the announcers completely taken back by this unknown man......Schiavone says he’s big.....he’s very big.......and clearly this is the back up Missy was hinting at In her previous promo......as for Missy, she kindly hands Awesome a chair as well, and the two men absolutely smash the sh!t out of Vader and the Giant, leaving them sprawled out on the mat........

......until The Total Package and Bam Bam Bigelow come running down the aisle, making the save for their respective (occasional) partners.......Awesome and his Compadre decide that they have inflicted enough damage for one night, and get the hell out of dodge before the Calvary hits the ring, retreating up the aisle with Missy rubbing their backs with a huge smile on her face, while Luger and Bigelow attend to Vader and the Giant.

It’s main event time now, and it’s Sting and The Warrior facing off against the Titans of Wrestling combination of Jean Paul Levesque and The Enforcer Ray Traylor......and this watch was epic.....ly bad.....ok it wasn’t that bad, but for a main event it was pretty poor.......

.......this was the first time in probably ten years that Sting and the Warrior had teamed up, and they still worked pretty well.....not as well as Levesque and Traylor however, who surprisingly had some really good chemistry as a team......in the end however, they couldn’t translate that chemistry to a victory.....because after the Warrior sent Levesque tumbling to the floor with a Clothesline over the top, Sting put Traylor away with the Scorpion Death Drop, booking he and the Warrior a match with Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage at Road Wild.

Winner(s): Sting & The Warrior

Speaking of Hogan and Savage......it didn’t take long for them to come running out the second the bell rang......along with the Nasty Boys......Savage picks up a steel chair on his way, clearly looking for retribution on the Stinger following that baseball bat shot last week.......he charges at Sting, steel chair raised, but the Warrior shoves Sting our of harms way, taking the chair shot himself as Sting falls to the outside.......The Titans descend on the fallen Warrior like a pack of wild dogs, kicking scratching and clawing at the face painted fighter......

......Sting however, still on the outside, is reaching under the ring for something.......and as he pulls out two black bats, it seems he came prepared.......he slides back into the ring and starts nailing the Titans with shots.......Knobbs, Saggs, Traylor......Savage takes another shot to the ribs.......and as the Warrior pulls himself to his feet, Sting tosses a bat to him.....and the Titans bail immediately......mainly because the Warrior is running around the ring like a lunatic swinging a baseball bat wildly over his head.......

.......Schiavone is going crazy......telling us that Warrior saved Sting.....Sting saved Warrior......at at Road Wild we will see four of the biggest names in ALL of professional wrestling go at it, in what could very well prove to be the most important night in the history of our sport......

......and as the Titans retreat, The Warrior is jubilant.....and even Sting cracks a rarely seen smile.......because he knows that in just a few short weeks, Hollywood Hogan will be standing across the ring from him......goodnight fans.
