Grand Canyon (11-2) vs. New Orleans (5-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 81, New Orleans - 68. Rodney Hills had 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists and didn't miss a shot. Odis Deck had 19 points and Spencer Ledet had 16. Every started but Ike Dendy (who only had 2 points) scored in double digits and we got out to an early lead in this one. This was the team with the most wins that we've beat this season and seeing that New Orleans had a 5-7 record coming in I was a little bit worried. I still feel like we will do poorly in conference play but since my expectation was a 5-7 win season we have already surpassed that!

Update: We are currently #24 in the mid-major top 25!

Howard (1-12) vs. Grand Canyon (12-2)

Final Score: Howard - 54, Grand Canyon - 63. We let a 17 point halftime lead get down to 3 in the second half but we did just enough to hold on for the win. Rodney Hills had 21 points and Spender Ledet had 13. Both players had 8 rebounds. Horace Williams had 16 points and was a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line. This was our final nonconference matchup heading into WAC play.

Update: We are now #22 in the Mid-Major poll! Hopefully this will help our prestige and exposure going into next season. The goal from the Athletic Director was to avoid last place in the conference and I'm hoping we can do that.

Grand Canyon (13-2) vs. UT-Rio Grande Valley (2-11)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 49, UT-Rio Grande Valley - 58. We really beat ourselves in this one as Odis Deck fouled out in only 13 minutes and Horace Williams fouled out in 23 minutes. Our backups just couldn't cut it and our opponents took advantage. Spencer Ledet had 15 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double while Rodney Hills had 11 points.

Grand Canyon (13-3) vs. Utah Valley (4-10)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 58, Utah Valley - 75. This one was a one possession game until the final 5 minutes when they broke away. Turnovers again have killed us as we committed 12 more than Utah Valley but outplayed them in every other aspect of the game (turnovers are also why we lost our conference opener). We are 328th in the country in forcing turnovers. Spencer Ledet had 15 points and Horace Williams had 11. Tracey Marrs was superb off the bench with a team high 17 points. Marrs was hurt in this one though and will miss a month with a torn abdominal muscle.

January 19, 1939

Chicago State (2-14) vs. Grand Canyon (13-4)

Final Score: Chicago State - 57, Grand Canyon - 73. The refs were on our side in this one, calling 30 fouls on Chicago State and only 13 on us. Rodney Hills had 20 points and 8 rebounds and every starter besides Odis Deck scored in double digits. Deck helped in a different way though with 5 assists.

January 21, 1939

Cal State Bakersfield (4-13) vs. Grand Canyon (14-4)

Final Score: Cal State Bakersfield - 58, Grand Canyon - 72. This was a tale of two halves as we went into the half down 10 and in serious foul trouble. In the second half though it was Bakersfield that got into foul trouble and it helped us get easy buckets and even out the playing field. Rodney Hills was the only starter not in foul trouble early and he kept us in the game with 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. Spencer Ledet had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Horace Williams had 10 points but endured a rough night from the floor, shooting 3 for 16.

Grand Canyon (15-4) vs. Austin Peay (16-4)

*This is not a conference game.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 46, Austin Peay - 87. We should have won this game. We committed 24 turnovers and they scored 40 points off those turnovers. They committed 9 turnovers and we scored 2 points off them. We shot 46% from the field which shows we shot better than the 46 points would suggest. But like I have said all season, turnovers are going to be the reason we are awful. I don't know how we turn it over so much but we've only won the turnover battle once so far this season (and it was by one turnover). We also were out-rebounded 44-23. Horace Williams had 11 points and Odis Deck had 10.

January 26, 1939

Grand Canyon (15-5) vs. New Mexico State (13-6)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 32, New Mexico State - 79. We were outclassed by the top team in the conference. They completely outplayed us, shooting 30-67 from the field while we shot 7-35! We committed 10 more turnovers but really there isn't much we can blame this loss on as we were thoroughly outplayed by an amazing opponent. Nobody scored in double digits and only one player had more than 4 rebounds for us.

Overall Record: 15-6
Conference Record: 2-3
Home Record: 7-0
Away Record: 8-6
Ranking: NR
RPI: 320

Recruiting News

We have our first recruit! PG Lamar Smith has committed to play for Grand Canyon next year! Smith is from Fountain Hills High School in Fountain Hills, Arizona. He is a 1 star recruit and the #1,802 recruit in the nation and is someone who we hope we can mold into a solid starter. He is a deadly 3 point shooter and is solid handling the ball and passing. He doesn't like to drive at all but the great shooting and ball handling could make him a great 6th man or starter. He even has the potential to be a nuisance on the offensive glass and grab some offensive rebounds. We still have 2 more scholarships left and are hoping we can find 2 players that will be able to play serious minutes for us next season.
