WEC 51: Aldo vs Gamburyan ![]() September 30, 2010 Broomfield, Colorado Attendance: 5,830 ------------------------- Prelims Demetrious Johnson(5-1) vs Noah Thomas(13-5) Johnson and Thomas open the fight up by throwing strikes but nothing significant lands from either fighter. Johnson starts to get the upper hand by countering with clean shots. Thomas is able to rush Mighty Mouse up against the cage and drag him to the ground until round one comes too a halt. Both fighters come out swinging for round two and take turns landing punches on each other for the entire round, It looks like the ultimate fighter veteran Noah Thomas was able to take the round. Round three brings much of the same Johnson starts to push the pace knowing he needs a knockout to win but ends up getting taken down in the last minute all but sealing the w for Thomas. Result: Noah Thomas(14-5) defeats Demetrious Johnson(5-2) by unanimous decision(30-27, 30-27, 30-27) Antonio Banuelos(17-6) vs Chad George(11-5) Antonio Banuelos is able to stuff an early takedown attempt and keep the fight on the feet where he landed a series of giant punches knocking George down. The Pit fighter was able to jump in and secure an armbar on his dazed opponent getting a well deserved victory. Result: Antonio Banuelos(18-6) defeats Chad George(11-6) by armbar at 4:05 of round 1. Diego Nunes(14-1) vs Tyler Toner(10-1) The featherweights come out throwing early and Nunes is getting the upper hand, Toner tries to pin Nunes against the cage at the end of the round but ends up getting out grappled. Rough start to the fight for Toner. Nunes picks up where he left of landing crisp punches on Toner, Nunes decides to clinch up and starts cracking Toner with some big punches he ends up pinning Tyler against the cage to finish off the round. Toner looks like he has nothing left in the tank for round three and Nunes takes advantage of his tired opponent by pushing him against the cage and peppering him with elbows, knees and punches until time expires. Result: Diego Nunes(15-1) defeats Tyler Toner(10-2) by unanimous decision(30-27, 30-27, 30-27) Chris Horodecki(15-2) vs Ed Ratcliff(7-1) Both fighters throw down in the opening frame landing nice shots on one another. That round was too close to call. Horodecki comes out and lands a bomb sending Ratcliff down and the Canadian dives in for the finish but Ratcliff ends up recovering quickly and scrambles somehow ending up in Horodecki's gaurd. Ratcliff doesn't do much but lie on the IFL vet for the remainder of the round. Horodecki puts on a striking clinic during the third round landing hard leg kicks that leave Ratcliff limping. Horodecki should get the decision. Result: Chris Horodecki(16-2) defeats Ed Ratcliff(7-2) by unanimous decision(30-27, 30-27, 30-27) Mike Thomas Brown(23-6) vs Jonathan Brookins(10-3) The former Featherweight champ is coming off a pair of losses and comes out looking for the takedown but suprisingly Brookins is able to stuff all the takedowns from Brown and stay on his feet for the entire round. Brown looks fired up for round two and charges in finally getting Brookins down, he shows his dominance and slides straight to mount where he lands big shots then transitions beautifully into an armbar forcing Brookins to tap. Result: Mike Thomas Brown(24-6) defeats Jonathan Brookins(10-4) by armbar at 3:41 of round 2. Zhang Tie Quan(11-0) vs Jason Reinhardt(20-1) The undefeated Mongolian gets rushed up against the cage by Reinhardt who is eventually able to take Quan's back. Reinhardt gets him to the ground and lands some big punches before digging in for the rear naked choke. The Mongolian makes a disappointing debut. Result: Jason Reinhardt(21-1) defeats Zhang Tie Quan(11-1) by rear naked choke at 4:01 of round 1. Main Card Leonard Garcia(14-5-1) vs Mark Hominick(18-8) Hominick comes out kicking and is landing big on Garcia. Garcia catches a kick and is able to bring the Canadian down, he remains in half gaurd until the round finishes. Hominick comes out trying to finish the fight but gets another one of his leg kicks caught and Garcia ends up in half gaurd, the Jackon product doesn't do much as the round comes to an end. Shawn Tompkins tells Hominick between round he is losing and needs a finish to win, he listens to his coach and comes out and lands a picture perfect headkick on the jaw of Garcia putting him to sleep. Result: Mark Hominick(19-8) defeats Leonard Garcia(14-6-1) by knockout at 1:12 of round 1. Chan Sung Jung(10-2) vs George Roop(10-6-1) Fan favorite Korean Zombie comes out with barrages of big punches but George Roop deals with it and the fight heads to a second round. The Zombie comes out swinging in round two and throws a huge haymaker that Roop ducks under and lands a knockout blow of his own to the Korean. Jung is asleep before he hits the mat. Result: George Roop(11-6-1) defeats Chan Sung Jung(10-3) by knockout at 2:19 of round 2. Miguel Torres(37-3) vs Charlie Valencia(12-5) The former Bantamweight champ comes out and shows nice use of his reach before getting an explosive takedown on Valencia, he ends up in half gaurd and starts to drop bombs with Valencia defenseless referee Herb Dean stops the fight. Result: Miguel Torres(38-3) defeats Charlie Valencia(12-6) by tko at 3:28 of round 1. Co-Main Event Donald Cerrone(11-3) vs Jamie Varner(16-3-1) The enemies rush out to the center of the cage and start throwing down! They keep the pace up for the entire round I'd say the Cowboy landed the better shots. They run to the middle of the cage again and Cerrone hits a big flurry of punches on Varner and he's rocked but Varner throws a bomb of his own when the Cowboy rushes in and Cerrone falls to the mat. Varner dives in to finish but Cerrone recovers quickly, Varner starts trying to get into side control but Cerrone slaps on the guillotine! Varner rather then tap to his nemesis goes to sleep. Result: Donald Cerrone(12-3) defeats Jamie Varner(16-4-1) by guillotine at 2:37 of round 2. Main Event Jose Aldo(17-1)(Featherweight Champion Of The World) vs Manvel Gamburyan(11-4) The champ starts by feeling out Manny using his speed to counter and avoid anything the Armenian throws. Aldo easily takes round 1 as time expires. Aldo lands a couple punches but gets rushed against the cage and taken down by the challenger. Manny tries to work and get past the Brazilians gaurd but Aldo ends up sweeping him. Round two comes to a halt it could probably go either way. Aldo is able to use his striking again and you can see Manny getting tired by the second, In the last minute manny is able to hit a Judo throw from the clinch and put the champ on the ground. Aldo once again sweeps him and drives a powerful knee into his ribs before the clock runs out in round three. Gamburyan comes out and shoots in for a quick takedown but Aldo catches him with a big uppercut! The tuf alumni is rocked but somehow makes it to the end of the round. Aldo easily took another round. Manny is able to come out and get the champ on the cage Aldo stuffs a couple takedowns but finally gets hauled to the ground by Manvel. Manny can't do anything on the ground though and Aldo should have his second successful title defense. Judge Adam Hall scores the contest 48-47 Gamburyan. Judge Joe Meake scores the fight 48-47 Aldo Judge Craig Brown scores the bout 48-47 for your new champion Manvel "The Anvil" Gamburyan The crowd boo's violently as Aldo storms away from the cage. An "Aldo" chant begins to echo throughout the venue. Result: Manvel Gamburyan(12-4) defeats Jose Aldo(17-2) by split decision. -------------------------------------------- Quote:

Storylines That Emerged From WEC 52 ![]() Faber and Mizugaki Throw Down In Potential Fight Of The Year The main event of the evening did not disappoint at all. Urijah Faber opened the fight by getting Mizugaki to the mat and hitting him with some bug shots, Mizugaki was saved by the bell and made it to round 2. It seemed Mizugaki was outmatched and would be finished easily in round 2 but he surprised everyone and caught the former featherweight champ with a big uppercut that dazed him. Moments later he would land a headkick flush on the chin of Faber dropping him and instead of diving in and trying to finish he called The California Kid back to his feet. In an amazing feat Faber was able to weather the storm and make it to the end of the round. The question now was if Faber had recover from the one sided beatdown enough to take the third and deciding round. Faber didn't stay on his feet for long, he popped the Japanese fighter with two big jabs and hauled him to the ground. Faber secured mount and started dropping some big ground and pound but Mizugaki wouldn't give in. In a last ditch effort the Shooto and Deep veteran attempted to buck Faber off but instead gave up his back allowing The Californian sink in the rear naked. Faber looked awesome in round 1 and showed tremendous heart coming back to lay an ass whooping on Mizugaki, the fans will no doubt want to see a rematch of this epic showdown in 2011. ![]() Bowles chokes out Fabiano Nobody would of predicted Brian Bowles would choke out Nova Uniao BJJ black belt Wagnney Fabiano, but thats just what he did. The former champ put on a show on the way to a one sided defeat. Potential fight for Bowles include a rematch with former champ Miguel Torres, Greg Jackson's student Demacio Page or former featherweight king pin Urijah Faber. --------------------------------------------------- Also if you haven't done so yet don't forget to make your predictions for wec 53.
