1998 In Review: UK Edition

The year 1998 was the year of Bill and Monica, when an American president was impeached for only the second time in history. It was also the year of major strides forward and tragic setbacks in the Northern Ireland peace process, the near-meltdown of the world economy and widespread devastation caused by the power of nature.

The omens for peace in Northern Ireland did not look good as 1998 dawned. Talks were meant to be going on, but the dominant theme was a wave of killings sparked by the murder of loyalist leader Billy Wright in the Maze prison over Christmas. Such was the mood that on New Year's Day 1998, the Primate of the Church of Ireland, Dr Robin Eames, was moved to predict "dark days ahead" for the province.

No solution was in sight and the violence was, if anything, getting worse.

The climax of the marching season - the celebration of the Battle of the Boyne - was approaching. Then, on the night of 11-12 July, there was an arson attack on a house in Ballymoney, County Antrim. Three brothers aged between 8 and 11 - Jason, Mark and Richard Quinn - were killed. Ironically, although their mother was Catholic, the boys had been brought up as Protestants.

It was certainly a very uncomfortable economic year for much of the world, with currencies plunging in the Far East and Russia, Japan going into recession, large-scale job losses in the UK and stock markets seemingly charting new peaks and troughs every week.

And gradually moving centre stage was the Spirit of Christmas Future, the euro, an unknown quantity ready to roll out across most of Europe in the New Year.

And looming in the near future. the milennium

Health Chiefs preparing to deal with casualties from the millennium celebrations at Greenwich fear they may have to cope with mass suicides by members of cults anticipating the end of the world. Concerns that the turn of the millennium might induce a suicidal hysteria akin to that which swept medieval Europe at the start of the year 1000 have exercised minds.

'3 years ago i was there in London for the first ever British Cage Fighting show held by Jerome T McCallum, owner of BCF. I had been sent there by the website that i worked for to get the scoop on this new promotion that mixed boxing rules and mixed martial arts together. If your reading this, then chances are that you have stumbled onto the site in your time - Blurcat.com. Upon seeing the show i became hooked on a sport that previously i had viewed as just a job and watched with BCF with hopes they would explode. Unfortunately they never did as well as i hoped.

I watched them cling to the old 12 round boxing structure as their competitors streamlined the sport in quite the spectacle. BCF were going nowhere.

But what could you do...........

The only thing you can do i guess. I saved every penny i could (to the point of moving into a studio flat with a mate to save money), and began fleshing out my own MMA promotion.

As 1998 drew to a close, i had managed to get a few of the UK unemployed fighters to sign for me and i was so close to actually getting a show together. I just needed a name.. a hook. Something that will make people remember us. Using my web connections i looked up what the most searched for thing was on Yahoo.... Y2K

That was it.. The millennium. People searching about it would bring us up and it epitomized everything we stood for. It was fear of the unknown. The new millennium, the new sport.

The Rules Of Millennium MMA:

2KMMA follows the Unified Rules Of Mixed Martial Arts Cage Fighting with the following sub rules:

• If no decision is achieved by the end of the fight, the judges decision is final.
• Non-Title rounds are 1x10 + 2x5 Minutes.
• Title rounds are 1x10 + 4x5 Minutes.
• Strikes to a downed opponent are legal.
• The referee can seperate the fighters if they are inactive.
• Closing guard while on the ground is legal.
• Knee strikes to the head of an opponent who is on the ground are illegal.
• Elbow strikes to the head are legal.
• Stomps to a downed opponent are illegal.

January 1999:

'For Millennium MMA to succeed, i was gonna need some investors and i was hardly gonna go to the dragons for money. The decision was made to move away from being the owner to the president of 2KMMA and offer shares to anyone willing.Using my power at Blurcat.com, i put feelers out and got some enquiries from Lance Dekker, Jacek Kasprzyk and Eisaku Higashukuni - a texan, a pole and a japanese man. It seemed no one from the UK was willing to invest.

In the end Lance Dekker was given ownership rights for 2KMMA because as he liked to say... 'By Gawd.. Im richer than you'

Lance topped up the 10K that i had saved with 40 of his own. The next day i began phoning the fighters....

'We're on. When can you be ready to fight'

With the cage trapping Dozier, Clough looks to try and take him down.
Dozier digs in and manages to defend the takedown, but Clough does manage to get behind him.

We are back underway!
A quick one-two combination from Clough only finds gloves.
Dozier doesn't let Clough settle, stepping in closer to impose himself.
Dozier, who is visibly tired, looks like he might want to get in close and wrestle with Clough.
Dozier can't get close enough to grapple, Clough keeps him away with strikes.
Eugene Clough looks exhausted.
Clough counters a flurry of punches by hitting a straight punch.
Clough glances a right hand strike off the side of the left shoulder.
Dozier quickly gets in closer, looking to attack.
Slowly moving in closer, a ragged-looking Dozier wants to wrestle Clough.
Clough uses his strikes to stop Dozier from getting close enough to grapple.

The co-main event is up next. 'Granite' Kevin Portman will take on 'Lights Out' Reinhardt Rhett in the 2KMMA Heavyweight division.
