Default [Hollywood Movie Studio] An Epic Jouney

HOLLYWOOD MOVIE STUDIO : AN EPIC JOURNEY

Hi everyone and welcome to my dynasty. For those of you who don't know about Hollywood Movie Studio, it is a game in which you can run one or multiple movie studios. The game is currently available for free if you look for it on Google and if you register to the forum, you can get real life talent files.

In this diary, I'll be playing with 9 different studios.

Studio 1 : Marvel
Studio 2 : DC Comics
Studio 3 : Disney
Studio 4 : Pixar (I know Pixar is owned by Disney, but whatever)
Studio 5 : Hollywood Movie Studio (Named after the game, this studio is releasing movies to win awards only. They don't care about profit.)
Studio 6 : Universal (They release a large variety of movies)
Studio 7 : Comedy (No details needed)
Studio 8 : Sony (They are controlling the video game adaptation market as risky as it may be and they release a large variety of movies too.
Studio 9 : Miramax (They tend to release a large variety of movies)

In my Universe, there has never been a super hero movie, so no MCU, DCEU or Spidey-verse. Some characters could end up to be portrayed by the same actos, but not everyone)

A post is dedicated to a month. For example, my first post will include all movies released in January, with their box offices earnings, their critical reception and Metacritic score. At the end of the post, you'll have a summary of all films who'll be released in the next month.

In my first calendar year, just a small bunch of movies will be released. I'll produce more films for the next years as I realized it wasn't a really high amount of movies.

Something else to look for is the award ceremonies. I included six of them for the first year (Oscars, Golden Globes, SAG, Critics, Saturn and Razzies). The Oscars nominees are decided in-game and the nominees for the other ceremonies are determined ramdomly with a fantastic program called the Hat based on the five stars performances.

Enjoy!

(I'm french canadian, so please be gentle and accept my mistakes as English isn't my mother tongue)

JANUARY 2018

Inside my Love (Miramax)
Genre: Police Procedural / Comedy
Starring : Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom, Russell Crowe, Carrie-Anne Moss, Kim Basinger, Joan Allen
Director: Andrew Adamson
Production Budget : 36 000 000.00$

SUMMARY : A crooked cop (Evangeline Lilly) and her partner (Orlando Bloom) must track a criminal (Russell Crowe), but to achieve that, they need to work with the unit's worst duo (Kim Basinger, Carrie-Anne Moss), who've been tracking him for the past 15 years
CRITIC: Overall an enjoyable movie by fans of police procedurals, but casual moviegoers could be turned off by the film's sarcastic tone and subpar performances by the main cast. It's a shame Russell Crowe wasted one of his best performance of the past few years in an average movie like this. I don't understand why the script attracted big names like Crowe and Bloom. You'll watch it and won't remember much about it a week later.

Metascore : 46

US Box Office : 28 855 531 $
Foreign Box Office : 25 790 886 $
Worldwide Box Office : 54 645 917 $
Profit / Loss: 18 645 917 $

Bad Apple (Comedy)
Genre: Comedy
Starring : Aziz Ansari, Billie Lourd, Aaron Yoo, Portia Doubleday
Director: David Gordon Green
Production Budget : 35 000 000.00$

SUMMARY : Four friends (Aziz Anzari, Billie Lourd, Aaron Yoo, Portia Doubleday) travel across the United States to find the perfect spot to build their business.
CRITIC: You can see the cast's trying really hard to make it work but a horrible sub par script completly ruins the movie. Most of the jokes fall flat and you really have a special mind if you laugh more than three times during the entirety of the movie.

Metascore : 29

US Box Office : 16 727 539 $
Foreign Box Office : 18 540 783 $
Worldwide Box Office : 35 268 322 $
Profit / Loss: 268 322 $

Fantasy Life (Disney)
Genre: Animation
Starring : Anna Kendrick, Forest Whitaker, Jon Hamm, Saoirse Ronan, William Fichtner
Director: Brad Bird
Production Budget : 72 000 000 $

SUMMARY : A young girl (Anna Kendrick) discovers a magical music box and she is transported into a magical world in which she meets a princess and her prince (Saoirse Ronan, John Hamm) who are in a conflict with an evil wizard (Forest Whitaker) and his sidekick (William Fichtner)
CRITIC: The all-star cast, including Academy Award Winner Forest Whitaker, delivers great voice-over performances. The movie looks good and the characters are lovable. Everyone should be able to enjoy the movie, I highly recommand it to families. The only thing working against the movie is that it looks like it was only made to promote Disney's latest video game, who has the exact same storyline.

Metascore : 76

US Box Office : 149 110 038 $
Foreign Box Office : 283 663 127 $
Worldwide Box Office : 432 773 165 $
Profit / Loss: 360 773 165 $

BOX OFFICE TRIVIA
Inside my Love : This is the lowest grossing Orlando Bloom movie domestically since 2005's Elizabethtown, according to Box Office Mojo.

Bad Apple : 40th highest grossing Road Trip Comedy of all-time. This is not really good considering this isn't the most popular genre.

Fantasy Life: Largest opening ever for Disney in the two first months of the year, beating Gnomeo and Juliet. It is also the biggest opening ever in January, beating previous leader Paul Blart: Mall Cop by 13 million dollars.

FEBRUARY 2018

Toonstruck (Pixar)
Genre: Animation / Comedy
Starring : Sacha Baron Cohen, Danny McBride, Hugh Bonneville, Michael Sheen, Tom Hiddlestone
Director: Phil Lord
Production Budget : 78 000 000.00$

SUMMARY :*Drew Blanc (Sacha Baron Cohen) is an animator and original creator of the Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show, but in reality the many cute talking rabbits that star in the show sicken him.Waking up early in the morning by his television coming on, Drew is sucked into the television as it displays the Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show

CRITIC: Sacha Baron Cohen is internationally known for his edgy comedies, but his most recent turn sees him take on the role of Drew Blanc in a PG animated comedy. Here, we see a toned down Cohen who doesn't exactly seems to know how to appeal to a younger audience. He loses his edge and the weak doesn't really help him. Toonstruck is an average movie that could please younger audiences, but Sacha Baron Cohen's fans will feel like this movie is a let down, as he is stripped of his R rated comedy.

Metascore : 45

US Box Office : 74 555 060 $
Foreign Box Office : 141 675 631 $
Worldwide Box Office : 216 230 691 $
Profit / Loss: 138 230 691 $

A Liar's Life (Miramax)
Genre: Romance
Starring : Lilly-Rose Depp, Tom Holland, Stephan James
Director: John Maybury
Production Budget : 18 000 000.00$

SUMMARY : A young white girl (Lilly-Rose Depp) falls in love with a black boy (Stephan James) during the Segregation Era to the disdain of her brother (Tom Holland)

CRITIC: From the opening scene to the last scene of this tearjerker, everything seems odd. The story could have been much more effective, but only if it remained the story of a complicated romance instad of trying to deal too much on racism. The young cast doesn't deliver and John Maybury's direction didn't help the movie as a whole. What could have been an award-worthy movie ends up being a mess who won't win anything except Razzies.

Metascore : 39

US Box Office : 24 296 511 $
Foreign Box Office : 21 751 454 $
Worldwide Box Office : 46 047 965 $
Profit / Loss: 28 047 965 $

Without Pain (Miramax)
Genre: Action
Starring : Ben Foster, Chloe Grace Moretz, Michael C. Hall
Director: Colin Trevorrow
Production Budget : 99 000 000 $

SUMMARY : A suspended CIA Agent (Ben Foster) must fight a drug lord (Michael C Hall) who kidnapped his daughter (Chloe Grace Moretz)

CRITIC: Directed by Colin Trevorrow who brought us Jurassic World, this action movie never lacks of intensity. We're on the edge of our seats throught the entire movie and the action sequences, who obviously borrow a lot from the John Wick movies are wonderfully shot. The underrated Ben Foster delivers an interesting performance, but it's Dexter's Michael C. Hall who really steals the show as a cut-throat drug lord. Overall, Without Pain is an enjoyable rated R action movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Metascore : 70

US Box Office : 28 554 195 $
Foreign Box Office : 44 017 725 $
Worldwide Box Office : 75 571 920 $
Profit / Loss: (26 428 080) $

BOX OFFICE TRIVIA

Toonstruck : Highest grossing film starring Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead role since Borat, who grossed 261M$ in 2006.

A Liar's Life: Ranked 68th of all-time in the romantic drama genre. It is really low considering the movie came out around Valentine's Day.

Without Pain : Grossed only 4% the total gross of Trevorrow's previous effort, Jurassic World.

MARCH 2018

Snitch (Miramax)
Genre: Action
Starring : Zachary Quinto, Daniel Radcliffe, Benicio del Toro, Wesley Snipes
Director: Guy Ritchie
Production Budget : 67 000 000.00$

SUMMARY :*An inflitrated spy (Zachary Quinto) is ratted out by another infiltrated spy (Daniel Radcliffe) and his former boss (Benicio del Toro) sends out the world's best killer (Wesley Snipes) after him while he runs for his life

CRITIC: The movie was good at the beginning, average in the middle and bad in the end because of the terribly miscasted Wesley Snipes. He looked so out of place vis--vis Quinto and Radcliffe that he makes the entire movie look bad in the end. Beside Snipes, it was an ok movie that some people could enjoy.

Metascore : 53

Niagara (Miramax)
Genre: Suspense
Starring : Ethan Hawke, Kate Hudson, Rebecca Hall, Charlie Hunnam, Taylor Kitsch, Michael Pena
Director: Mike Binder
Production Budget : 24 000 000.00$

SUMMARY : George and Rose Loomis (Rebecca Hall, Michael Pena) are honeymooning at a Niagara Falls motel. She plots with Ted Patrick (Taylor Kitsch) to do him in, but all doesn't go smoothly. For one thing, after Loomis is reported missing Polly Cutler (Kate Hudson) spies him at the motel but her husband Bud (Charlie Hunman) thinks she's imagining it, so he asks the police (Ethan Hawke) to investigate.

CRITIC: The 1953 movie starring Marilyn Monroe didn't really go down in history, but this shody remake surely won't. The performances are uninspired and Mike Binder's (Reign over Me, Nashville) direction is average at best. The movie is overly long and the plot doesn't really catch your attention for so long. A overall forgettable that can still find an audience.

Genre: Comedy
Starring : Amy Schumer, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Emma Stone, Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis
Director: Judd Apatow
Production Budget : 70 000 000 $

SUMMARY : A group of friends go on a retreat in a shack in the woods to relax, but everything goes terribly wrong.

CRITIC: The wonderful cast put up by Judd Apatow has an incredible chemistry, but some of the gags seem recycled and some of them fell terribly flat, but it's still a really entertaining movie that will bank a lot at the box office.

Of Rocks and Sand (Comedy)
Genre: Comedy / Dark

SUMMARY : Three men (Roth, Shannon, Owen) trying to fight their drug addiction think that it could good idea to embark on a journey across the United States with their two drug dealers (Paul, Teller) with their destination being Mexico.

CRITIC: On paper, the movie can look a bit tad and uninspired, but it is truly a revelation of the dark comedy genre. Wrote to force to audience to laugh and to realise the message the movie is trying to give the audience, Of Rocks and Sand is an engaging movie that will make you realise that it is more than just a road trip comedy.

APRIL 2018

Toy Story 4 (Pixar)
Genre: Animation
Starring : Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Ed Helms, Hank Azaria
Director: Lee Unkrich
Production Budget : 254 000 000.00$

SUMMARY : Buzz (Tim Allen), Woody (Tom Hanks) and the gang reunite once again, but this time, they're shipped to two adults (Hank Azaria, Ed Helms) who like to perform bizarre experiences on their toys

CRITIC: What is arguably the greatest animated franchise in movie history just had its first faux pas. Toy Story 4 is the weakest film of the franchise. The plot is not ground breaking,*it is still good compared to others animated movies, but compared to the Academy Award nominated screenplay*of the first and third installement of the franchise, this one is particularly weak. The animation is still superb, but the new characters introduced in the movie don't seem to fit very well in the Toy Story Univrse. While the movie isn't bad, it falls short of greatness. It really trails behind his older brothers in term of quality, but still a really nice effort by Pixar.

Metascore : 72

US Box Office :*375 841 256*$
Foreign Box Office :*685 451 254*$
Worldwide Box Office :*1 061 292 510*$

Rescue (Universal)
Genre: Action
Starring : Ben Affleck, Samuel L. Jackson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Hugh Laurie, Sam Worthington
Director: Ben Affleck
Production Budget : 56 000 000.00$

SUMMARY : Two American CIA Agent (Ben Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor) must travel to Brazil to rescue their colleague (Samuel L. Jackson) who was inflitrated in the local crime syndicate lead by a drug abusing man (Sam Worthington)

CRITIC: Affleck's return behind the camera is much closer to Argo and The Town than to Live by Night. Affleck and Ejiofor have a surprisingly good chemistry and Worthington is a real revelation in the movie. Veterans Jackson and Laurie are good as usual and help elevate the movie. Even with its limited setting*the action sequence are enjoyable and very well put together. Definitely one of the best action movie of the year.

Metascore : 76

US Box Office :*87 652 142*$
Foreign Box Office :*112 670 593*$
Worldwide Box Office :*200 322 735*$

The Ultimate Fight(Miramax)
Genre: Action
Starring : Halle Berry, Michelle Rodriguez, Famke Jenssen, Eric Bana, Willem Dafoe
Director: John Woo
Production Budget : 28 000 000 $

SUMMARY : A talented MMA fighter (Michelle Rodriguez) is being chased by an international crime syndicate when purposedly lost a fight to gain money. Her sister (Halle Berry) helps to flee the country, but they both need to defend themselves from the ruthless assassins sent after them.

CRITIC: An average plot makes an average movie, this is true. This extremly original screenplay doesn't live up to the already low expectations. This movie brings nothing new to the table and*is boring for most of the time. On the*plus*side,*Rodriguez and Berry deliver equally good performances in the lead roles. This is not a*typical action movie, some people could find it interesting.

Metascore : 49

US Box Office : 12 935 052 $
Foreign Box Office :*19 428 280*$
Worldwide Box Office :*32 363 332*$
Profit / Loss:*4 363 332*$

BOX OFFICE TRIVIA
Toy Story 4: It is the second most expensive animated movie of all time, passing Toy Story 4 by 54 millions but still trailing behind Tangled who claims the top spot with a 260 million price tag.

Rescue: Grossed about 800% more money at the Box Office than Live by Night, Ben Affleck's previous directorial effort.

Alpha Squad (Sony)
Genre: Action
Starring : Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Keanu Reeves, Uma Thurman, Margot Robbie, Shia LeBoeuf
Director: Sylvester Stallone
Production Budget : 111 000 000.00$

SUMMARY : A SWAT team are ambushed in a tower by a madman determined to kill every single one of them

CRITIC: Directed by Sylvester Stallone, Alpha Squad could easily be a reference in this specific type of action movie mostly set in one place. Lots of gun fights, lots of explosion and extremely violent, this movie will appeal to everyone who loves a good old-fashioned action movie. Stallone is really a hit or miss actor, but this time around, helped by a nice supporting cast he's able to recreate a success.

The Illustrious Prophecy (Universal)
Genre: Thriller
Starring : Michelle Monaghan, Hayden Christensen, Ben Kingsley, Jean Reno
Director: Luc Besson
Production Budget : 62 000 000.00$

SUMMARY : A woman (Michelle Monaghan) looks after her brother (Hayden Christensen) after he mysteriously disappears , but she is soon stalked by a pervert (Jean Reno) who was hired by a crazy old man (Ben Kingsley) who doesn't want her to know what really happened to his brother.

CRITIC: While Luc Besson never delivered his ultimate masterpiece, he keeps trying his luck, but his latest effort is certainly of his weakest. The overly complicated plot doesn't help the audience understand what's going on and it leaves us with too much questions. The talent is brutally lost in this incomprehensible mess and in a movie that you'll surely have easily forgotten when the DVDs will hit the stores. The movie is clearly divided in two. Everything around Kingsley and Reno is good, but Monaghan and Christensen are especially awful, which is too bad, because they're the main characters.

Wonder Woman (DC)
Genre: Superhero
Starring : Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Liev Schreiber, Ray Stevenson, Lily James, Emile Hirsch
Director: Patty Jenkins
Production Budget : 200 000 000.00 $

SUMMARY : Diana Prince (Gal Gadot), emissary and ambassador from Themyscira, must protect New York City from Ares (Liev Schreiber), God of War, as he takes over the world's nuclear weapons, threatening to launch World War 3.

*
CRITIC: While the movie isn't*bad, all the hype surrounding the DC Universe built incredible expectations for their first movie to hit the theaters. Gal Gadot is the perfect Wonder Woman and the supporting cast blends well in their roles. The editing is shaky at best and the plot could have been better, but Wonder Woman is still an enjoyable movie. Without the huge amount of hype around the DCEU, Wonder Woman would have probably a higher score, but the pressure was too much for the film.

Body Double (Miramax)
Genre: Action
Starring : Luke Evans, Kiefer Sutherland, Thomas Jane, Paula Patton, Madison Davenport, Donald Sutherland

Production Budget : 38 000 000.00 $

SUMMARY : A teacher (Luke Evans) fakes his own death when an Interpol agent (Kiefer Sutherland) discovers his other identity. A game of cat and mouse then begins between the two men.

CRITIC: Donald Sutherland begins his career as a director with this action movie. It is not groundbreaking, but good enough to guarentee a return at the box office. Kiefer Sutherland does a good job as the main antagonist, while Evans is shaky at best in the title role and Thomas Jane delivers an average performance.

Captain America (Marvel)
Genre: Superhero
Starring : Tom Hardy, Emilia Clarke, Adam Driver, Antonio Banderas, Paul Dano, Dwayne Johnson
Director: Joe Johnson
Production Budget : 206 000 000.00$

SUMMARY : Tells the story of Steve Rogers (Tom Hardy) who becomes Captain America. He is helped in his quest by Peggy Carter (Emilia Clarke) to defeat the vicious Red Skull (Antonio Banderas)

CRITIC: This movie had a lot of potentiel but the vast majority of it is wasted in the terrible casting. Antonio Banderas is just not believable in a villain role and Clarke is just blank. Tom Hardy is ok as Rogers and Adam Driver and Paul Dano shine in their respective roles. All the thrill Marvel promised is only partially*present but it is stillan enjoyable movie, but it could have been much better.

Benny (Pixar)
Genre: Animation

He does so until he's picked up by a young girl (Hailee Steinfeld) and her father (Jamie Foxx), for which he develops a lot of affection. He decided to break his pattern and to stay with them, but he loses his right to immortality.

CRITIC: The same team who gave us the wonderful Up, comes with with another fantastic animated movie. The*movie is wonderfully written*with full character development and*backstory and it's*impossible to not relate to any of the characters. The movie is visually stunning and the score and original songs are*the icing on the cake. The best animated motion picture of the 21st Century.

Genre: Comedy
Starring : Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Brandon T. Jackson, Danny McBride, Matthew McConaughey, Jim Carrey, Owen Wilson

SUMMARY : 10 years after their critically acclaimed movie, the actors (Stiller, Black, Downey Jr., Jackson, McBride)' career is fastly declining. They decide to film a sequel, for the paycheck and to try to revive their dying careers.

*
CRITIC: Screenwriter Ben Stiller and Justin Theroux surprise us by delivering a nice sequel that could be better than the original. It is more funny and Jim Carrey easily replaces Tom Cruise, even if he's less suprising and over-the-top than Cruise. An enjoyable movie that should be applauded as one of the rare cases that an unwanted sequel comes out better than expected.

Director: Martin Brest
Production Budget : 50 000 000.00 $

SUMMARY : Two nurses in a retirement home (Jennifer Aniston, Ryan Gosling) terrorize the occupants with their wild antics

CRITIC: When someone hears the synopsys of this movie, they can easily come up with a couple of gags and it looks like the team behind this film did exactly that and repeated them for an hour and a half. But the weirdest thing to say is that it works. Jennifer Aniston outshines her co-star every chance she gets and helps the movie come out better that expected. A sleeper hit that has all the potential to become*a cult classic
