Default The Coaching Almanac of Emmett14

This is going to be simply a space to record year by year results for my coaching career.

Beginning with the 1968-1969 season with the Hampton Pirates. A decent season altogether, given the lack of depth, the multitude of freshmen that had to play and the injury to Gordon that cost him most of the conference season. Finish 19-15 (9-7) and picked up a first round loss to Chico State in the CI.com tournament.

Walk-on with a little size, but besides being a good free throw shooter is useless.

Played point guard last year, but will be able to play his true position, the two, this season. He's a very good offensive guard who made 70 three pointers last year. Just an okay defender, but his scoring makes him a tough guard for the MEAC. Hoping to have him average 18 or so a game.

Tory Greco, 6'0", 179, Junior, Milford, Virginia

Walk-on who played 8 minutes last year. Not much, but is competent enough to let him hold onto the walk-on spot.

Had a pretty strong freshman year, but his percentages didn't turn out too well. He put up a lot of threes last year, 8 a game. He can take the ball to the basket as well and I'm hoping to see more of that from this year. He doesn't contribute much besides offense. Hoping for him to be at 18 or so as well.

Really big wing who had some bright moments last year scoring the ball. Shoots the ball and can score a bit inside, He's a tweener for sure, but is better suited to the 3 than the 4.

Super quick guard who ended up having a pretty decent freshman year despite what I thought were very lackluster ratings. I'm hoping he didn't play over his head last season. Takes care of the ball but isn't much of a passer. He'll start the season as the starting point guard.

Marshall Beck, 6'0", 189, Freshman, Virginia Beach, Virginia

His stamina is just awful, which is why he's not the starting lineup, at least for now. He's a top 200 recruit and has the potential to be very good in a couple of years. A really good outside shooter who has enough other parts to his offense to keep teams honest. Will be a decent defender and actually has point guard skills and might average 4 or 5 assists as a senior.

Earl Smith, 6'5", 200, Freshman, Virginia Beach, Virginia

From a different high school in the same town as Beck. Smith is a good athlete and do-everything guard that defends pretty well, helps out on the glass and is a decent passer. But doesn't handle the ball well enough to play the point. Offensively, he's more of a driver but will shoot the 3 as well. Will see some time this season.

Played a decent amount last year and is the best rebounder on the team, the problem is how odd of a mix his talents are. He's a better perimeter defender than post defender, but can't handle the ball any. He can't score inside, and his only offensive game is a passable three point shot. Not sure how much he'll play this year, but he's a versatile guy to have on the end of the bench.

Rene Bazan, 6'8", 205, Junior, Eastville, Virginia

JUCO that is competent across the board but has no standout ability. Slightly worse at rebounding and defense than Neff but better offensively. Will see time in the post rotation for sure.

Started last year and I grimaced as he went 9-75 from three. In reality, a coach would just tell him to stop. He plays defense well and gets on the glass well enough, which we really need. If he jacks up threes all season, he'll have competition on the bench to take his spot.

The third player on the team from Virginia Beach. Had a strong freshman year with good percentages. He's the best post defender we have, but gets pushed around on the glass. Offensively, he's got some ability, but is still pretty raw. Is probably the most likely to replace Neff in the lineup should that change need to happen.

Delmar Roop, 6'9", 248, Freshman, Midlothian, Virginia

A superstar offensively from the start and a strong rebounder that will start at center from day one. The really unfortunate news about him is that he's likely to be a one and done, even at lowly Hampton. Scouts predict him to be a lottery pick next season, which would mean he's likely gone after his one season. He's not in the best shape and that will limit his minutes, but I'm hoping he can average 12 or so in his one season with me.

Starting lineup to begin the season:

PG: John Stansbury, Sophomore
SG: Dirk Gentile, Junior
SF: Jan Bratcher, Junior
PF: Charles Neff, Junior
C: Delmar Roop, Freshman

Not pretty at all to start the season. We have a nice win to open the season and then get blitzed in back to back games to round out the month, with horrible offensive performances to blame. The two freshmen, Roop and Beck have gotten off to horrid starts. They are a combined 8-42 from the field to start their careers. Gentile and Bratcher have just been decent, while Stansbury is the only player to really get off to a nice start shooting the ball. The offense will improve as things average out. Neff is going to be replaced in the starting lineup, he just shoots too damn much. Bazan will replace him.

Recruiting News

Just two scholarships to give this year, and I'm looking for a post and a guard. I'm going after JUCO guards very hard and haven't found too much, but do have an offer out to one from Georgia that I think will work out.

I do have a commitment locked up already, though in Karl Coronado from North Carolina. He's 6'9", 246, with a lot of offensive skills. He's a strong shooter and will stretch offenses right away. I'll be lucky if he shoots at much as Neff. He's just okay defensively, but will block some shots. If Roop leaves, he'll come right into some playing time next year.

Default November 1969 box scores

Had a lot of hopes early on after this game, offense played well and we hit jump shot sand we took care of them on the boards.

Vanderbilt is one of the worst power 5 programs in the nation and haven't made an NCAA tournament in 20+ years. But, they smoked us anyways. Ton of turnovers and a ton of missed shots. Besides steals and run outs for layups, Vanderbilt didn't really do anything to us offensively.

This was the surprise game, we shot horrible percentages, 7-36 from three is ghastly, but Franklin Pierce absolutely torched us from everywhere on the court. 8-12 from three, and 57% from the field. That's with a 1-10 performance from their backup post Leonardo. Ceja, Bazan and Roop went a combined 2-18 from the field.

Default December 1969 (4-4)

Inconsistent month, and let a few games get away from us that we should have won. We get destroyed on the road against a good Providence team, but we come back and pick up a very nice win on the road against a good Saint Joseph's squad. Beck and Roop have much better months, though it is still frustrating to know Roop and his 9 points and 4 rebounds a game is going to probably go pro after the season. When Bratcher, Gentile and Beck are hitting shots we're going to put up some points and win some games. Bazan has replaced Neff in the starting lineup and has done a nice job so far, being productive most games. The last game of the month was a conference game and it's always nice to start 1-0 there.

Recruiting News:

No commitments and scrambling a little bit to find a guard, still sniffing around some low level JUCOS and seeing if there are some diamonds in the rough. Really would like to add a combo guard that can play some point guard and is a strong defender.

Default December 1969 box scores

A nice bounce back win to start off the month. Stansbury and Gentile both with very strong games, and Stansbury's performance has surprised me and will keep him in the starting lineup for a while.

Player of Game: SG Dirk Gentile (HAMP)
The next three games were all part of a tournament, the Lon Varnell Classic. We were the 2 seed, though I don't think seeding matters much in these low level tournaments. A horrible offensive performance by both teams kicked off the tournament. Our starting backcourt combined to go 1-14. Roop finally is waking up a bit and scoring some inside. Both Neff and Ceja both were hurt in this game and it would knock both of them out for the rest of the tournament.

We recover nicely, especially for being shorthanded in the post. Bazan in his first collegiate start goes for 18 and 13 and has been in the starting lineup ever since, even if he hasn't matched those numbers. Fowler, normally a 3, played the role of reserve post and did a good job offensively.

We played CotC two years in a row in a pre-season tournament and had to face off against Dorsey Boswer each year. He went for 43 points on me, and his scoring averaged was at 26 before a season ending injury just a few games back. Luckily, the senior will be able to redshirt and come back next year. Our team effort wasn't enough to overcome Bowser's individual effort. We end up finishing 6th in the tournament.

We get blitzed by a solid Providence squad, as they have very little issues scoring inside against us, and besides Gentile nobody does much offensively for us.

We led the entire game and were able to keep the lead at at least 3. We were white hot from the field, and were sent to the line a ridiculous 49 times. Saint Joes went 36 times in a game that must have taken 3 hours. Gentile ends up with a season high 34 points (career high 36) and we have contributions all up and down the lineup.

North Florida has a really good squad this year, and are 10-2 currently. We are outscored 13-3 the last 4:28 and completely blow a chance at a solid win. Pettus, their 21.6 point a game scoring center tore us up and was excellent from the line. Beck had a breakout game, with 19 points and 3 assists, easily his best showing so far.

We start off conference play with a home game against a sorry South Carolina State team, and if it wasn't for a late push, we would have lost it. Deschamps was last year's MEAC freshman of the year, and he puts up a lot of shots for SCST and it was almost enough to get us. But Roop had 18 and 5, and Gentile scored 20, and we were able to take control late in the game and have a reverse of the situation from the last game.

Default January 1970 (4-5)

A month of streaks, starting off with 4 straight losses and then going on a 4 game winning streak right after. This is a young team, so the inconsistency is expected. Bratcher has fallen out of the starting lineup for the freshman, Smith, and Bratcher has responded by shooting a lot better, so he'll stay there for now, but still get 25 minutes a game. A miracle victory at Norfolk State was the highlight, blowing a huge lead to Morgan State the dumps.

Neff is 0-23 from three, preposterous that he would still shoot them.

Recruiting News:

I've identified a target, and it's Wisconsin JUCO guard Juste Durieu. He's ranked way down there at #1498, but my scout likes him, especially defensively and helping out on the glass. We're the only team talking to him, and I'm putting the full court press on him, so I like our odds of snagging him.

Default January 1970 Box Scores

Navy has a good squad this year, and they didn't really have too many problems with us on our own court. They were 9-14 from three, and we were 9-32.

This was a disaster of a game, we were up 30-13 with 5:55 left in the 1st half, and we end up losing by 9. Our starting lineup really struggled, and we just fell apart offensively after a hot start. But, a game we should have won.

Another game we jump on them early, but only by 10. They had the lead by half-time and they kept us trailing by 3-5 the rest of the game. Gentile had a strong game, but, didn't have much help besides Roop's 11 points.

An excellent win over a good Furman team on their court. They have an NBA prospect, Alfaro, who we held to 7 points. Beck got the start, and was hurt on the first play of the 2nd half, and Roop was hurt almost directly after him. But, both would be available by the next game. But, the story is Gentile who has a fantastic game, with 29 points and 4 rebounds. Neff with 8 and 5 off the bench. If he didn't shoot threes, he'd be a solid post.

We get overwhelmed by their three point shooting, and they seem to hit one every single time we got it down to a one possession game. Gentile and Roop had strong games, and Bratcher with 15 off the bench. But, we just came out on the losing end of an offensive display. Beck had a 9-0 run single handedly late in the game that got us with in 1.

Default February 1970 (3-5)

An ugly month littered with horrible defensive performances, and a handful of teams shooting 50+% from three on us, which is never easy to come back against. We happened to have a non-conference chance against a very good opponent in UNC Asheville and we had them on the ropes but couldn't take care of them. We've got talent, we've just been inconsistent, it does give me hope that next year with virtually everyone coming back (except maybe Roop) that we should be pretty salty next season. Thinking about putting Bratcher back in the starting lineup.

Recruiting News:

The aforementioned JUCO recruit Juste Durieu has committed, he's ranked #1948 in the nation. My scout seems to think he's a solid defender that gets on the glass and helps out quite a bit from the perimeter, something I need with my collection of posts. Offensively, he doesn't seem to be much, though he can shoot it a little. He's listed as a point guard, but he looks like he'd be better suited off the ball.

Default February 1970 Box Scores

We had a lot of bad defensive performances, and this was the first of them. They jumped all over us from the start, and we were a horrible 14-31 from the line, at one point, I believe we were 1-10.

A team we jumped all over before collapsing early in conference play, they took it to us from the start, and if it wasn't for their sorry free throw percentage, the score really would have looked bad. Their center, Saunders went for 27 and 13 while their PF went for 14 and 13. Rough day at the office for Hampton post players.

Player of Game: C William Saunders (MORG)
They couldn't miss and after they jumped out ahead of us by 20 in the first 15 minutes, they just maintained that lead to the end. Gentile had 22, but his 10-12 from the line saved him. Roop showed flashes, finally, worthy of his draft stock with 17 and 10.

Smith had the best game of his career with 19 and 11, while Roop was aggressive, putting up 17 shots that added up to 18 boards. UMES was horrible from the line and it kept us in it when we slumped early in the 2nd half.

UNC Asheville is 22-5 (14-1) going into March, and has a legit starting lineup with a lot offensive talent and we actually kept with them most of the game. We trailed virtually the entire game, but got it within 1 with 52 seconds left, and weren't able to score again. We were hitting shots, and 7 guys total hit three pointers on our way to 14 as a team. Another inefficient game from Roop.

An overtime game, that saw A&M hit a late three to tie it, before we took control late in the overtime thanks to some bit some steals from Gentile. It was a high paced game, that saw us put up 33 three pointers. Ceja had a career high 15 boards, which I imagine he'll have a hard time ever eclipsing. Gentile an inefficient 18 points, but the combo of Stansbury and Beck, going for 24 points on 11 shots from the field was the key to the game. Neff was 6-6 from the line off the bench and he is not a good free throw shooter.

Another nailbiter, and another game where Gentile came up huge with a late steal to help us take the lead, 68-67 and then we somehow managed to keep the score there for the last 57 seconds and come away with a victory. Bratcher had a really strong game off the bench with 23 points in 22 minutes, while Bazan had 8 and 10. We put up a lot of shots in this game, and it's really amazing we managed to win the percentage we shot versus theirs, 14 turnovers to our 7 was the key.

Default 1969-1970 Season Finale

Will include the March box scores in the post after this. March was much like the other months, inconsistent play and poor defense. We at least win a game in the conference tournament. The main negative is that Roop, our freshman who almost sniffed 10 points a game, has declared for the pros and is gone. We'll have an extra scholarship next year or maybe be able to pick up a transfer. I'll try to take a senior if nothing else.

We do bring back pretty much everyone else next year and a few players should see some major improvement. So, I'm hoping for a .500+ record in conference and try to snag a bye in the tournament.

1 seed Ohio State won the NCAA Championship, their 4th in their history. They beat 10 seed Rutgers went on a 10 game winning streak, sweeping through the Big East Tournament and all the way to the championship game. To be fair, Rutgers is an excellent program, and had underachieved up to that point.

(2) Oregon and (2) Memphis rounded out the Final Four.
Bowling Green beat TCU to win the NIT.
Central Connecticut beat McNeese State to win the CBI.
E. Tennessee State beat Niagara to win the CI.com tournament.

Default March 1970 box scores

We swept them this season, but they ended up winning the entire conference tournament and had to play in the play-in game for the 16 seed, and then got smooshed by Notre Dame.

Anyways, we put up a lot points and did a good job from the free throw line and survived a good game by Deschamps.

Blown out by the regular season champ that cemented a sub .500 conference record for us. Gentile and Roop both had strong games, but another game that we couldn't stop anybody.

We take care of our first round opponent, with Stansbury having the game of his life so far, hitting all 5 of this threes which did a lot to help his season ending percentages. Roop was inefficient on his way to 12 points.

We hang around Morgan State for quite a while, but Saunders inside just kept scoring on us at will. Our defense was just horrible all the way around, got killed inside and out. Adding better defenders has to be a priority in next season's class, which will have 5 or 6 spots. Roop had a solid final collegiate game, he would have been a monster in 2 or 3 years in the MEAC.

Really good rebounder, who maybe should have played more at the 3, given his decent shooting ability. But, I figured getting Fowler playing time mattered more this season.

Going pro after his freshman year. Has a lot of talent and really, I think he under performed. Going ahead to next season, it looks he was drafted 6th. At some point I'll load these draft files into the pro game to see how they go. Imagine a world where a guy who scored 10 points a game at Hampton, in the MEAC gets drafted 6th.
