WWF SmackDown, April 1997, Week Two
Attendance: 14,172 at Hampton Coliseum, Virginia
Commentary Team: Joey Styles, Mike Tenay & Bobby Heenan

Quote:
1. SmackDown opened with some technical action as WWF Intercontinental Champion William Regal put his British technician style to the test against the one man who might just be able to outwrestle him Dean Malenko. It looked like that might just be the case as Malenko had Regal’s back against the wall until Regal pushed him into the official before clocking him right in the jaw with a pair of brass knuckles he pulled from his tights! Regal stole the victory and advanced to the quarter-finals of the WWF Global Championship tournament in the process. (B / 78)

- Todd Pettengill caught up with Rob Van Dam to get a few words ahead of what has to be considered the biggest match of his career so far against Bret Hart. Van Dam said that the brand split has opened up a lot of opportunities for guys like him and he intends to grab this one tonight by beating Bret Hart and proving that the WWE’s new generation is ready to step up. (B / 79)

- In the parking lot a limo pulled up, Triple H, the New Age Outlaws and Chyna stepping out of it. The group, who dubbed themselves D-Generation X last week, quickly ran into Roddy Piper, who was furious that they were turning up late. Triple H told him to chill out because they didn’t care what he had to say, D-Generation X do what they want, when they want, and if you don’t like it then you can suck it! (B- / 72)

2. The Samoan Studs might have thought they’d have an easy time against youngsters Chris Harris & James Storm, but the two rookies put up a solid fight, surprising Ekmo & Kimo. Unfortunately for them they’ve not quite hit the point where they could be considered serious contenders and The Samoan Studs put them down with dual Samoan Drops. (C- / 57)

- Paul Heyman gave a passionate speech to the members of Extreme Rising about how how if they have the WWF Global Championship then they’ll have the whole show in the palm of their hand to squeeze the life out of it. Heyman told Taz that tonight he needs to prove that Randy Savage is everything that’s wrong with the WWF… by choking the life out of him. (C / 61)

- A video promo aired in which The Undertaker sent a warning to Sting. He chose to attack him at WrestleMania, a night that belongs to the Deadman, and he will suffer the consequences. “You can’t hide from me forever Sting, and when you finally choose to face me like a man I will make you rest… in… peace.” (B / 81)

3. In the second of tonight’s Global Championship tournament matches Goldust attempted to ride his recent wave of momentum against a man many consider a potential favourite for this tournament, The Rock. The Rock was seemingly without his recent allies Edge & Christian during this match but it didn’t alter the result as Rocky moved onto the quarter-finals with the Rock Bottom / People’s Elbow combo. (B / 80)

SPOTLIGHT SEGMENT

The match was over, and The Rock was happy to take his time celebrating. He might have taken a little bit too long however as he turned around right into a tackle by Chris Jericho! Jericho was gunning for revenge as he unloaded on Rocky with right hands but as it turned out The Rock wasn’t as alone as it first seemed.

Edge & Christian made their presence felt as they hit the ring, dragging Jericho off of Rock, throwing him into the corner and putting the boots to him. Jericho fought back and actually seemed to be getting the better of the exchange until Edge hit him with a vicious Spear! The Rock directed traffic, sending Edge & Christian to get two steel chairs and dragging Jericho up for the conchairto…

But aid came in the form of Matt & Jeff, the Hardy Boyz! The Hardyz have had their issues with Edge & Christian and weren’t going to sit around and watch them crush Jericho’s skull between two steel chairs. The Hardyz ducked under dual chair swings and hit both Edge & Christian with dropkicks that sent the chairs bouncing back off their faces. The Rock, Edge & Christian quickly bailed, the WWF Intercontinental Tag Team Champions nursing their wounds, while The Hardy Boyz helped Chris Jericho to his feet.

RATING: B (81)

- Marlena looked set to get a few words from WWF Cruiserweight Champion Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger when the interview was crashed by Jerry Lynn! Lynn told Marlena that she was wasting her time talking to this charisma black hole, she should be paying attention to the next face of the Cruiserweight division, Jerry Lynn. Lynn warned Liger that soon he’d be taking that title from him, and that there’s nothing he can do about it. “Get that through that ridiculous mask of yours and into your head of yours, alright? That title, it’s gonna be mine.” Liger let Lynn talk, considered what he had to say, and just walked off, which just riled Lynn up even more! (C / 64)

4. Randy Savage returned to the World Wrestling Federation in the hope of revitalising his career, and Roddy Piper made a point that he’d give him that opportunity when he drafted him to SmackDown. The WWF Global Championship tournament is as good a opportunity as any, but it almost came to a screeching halt when he faced off against Taz. The Extreme Rising member proved to be a serious threat and would likely have won the match if he could have just locked on the Tazmission, but Savage managed to avoid the choke and eventually finished Taz off with the Elbow Drop to keep his dreams of being a champion once again alive. (B / 80)

- Randy Savage was recovering in the ring when the unfamiliar music of D-Generation X hit! The new group hit the ring, disrespectfully telling Randy Savage to “get lost old man, let us show you how it’s done nowadays.” The Outlaws and Triple H mocked Savage, pretending to walk around like an old man, until the Macho Man stormed out of the ring, knowing he was outnumbered and that a fight wouldn’t go in his favour. (B- / 76)

5. The unusual tandem of Rick Steiner & Savio Vega attempted to spoil D-Generation X’s night as they took on the New Age Outlaws, but it was Chris Benoit who surprisingly proved the difference maker in this match. For whatever reason Benoit yanked Rick Steiner off of the ring apron while the official was busy arguing with Triple H (D-Generation X seemingly aren’t all that interested in fighting fair) and threw him into the security barricade. Without a partner it didn’t take long for Savio Vega to fall victim to the Fameasser as the Outlaws walked out with an undeserved victory. (B- / 76)

- The match won, D-Generation X were more than happy to taunt Savio Vega & Rick Steiner, Triple H repeatedly putting his boot in Vega’s face in a sign of disrespect. Suddenly Adam Clarke emerged from the back wielding a steel chair! Clarke charged the ring, swinging the chair wildly, not caring which member of DX he hit as long as he got one of them. Unfortunately for him the quartet bailed from the ring before any damage could be done, Clarke raging as he missed out on an opportunity at payback here tonight. (B / 78)

- Another vignette aired for the towel clad Val Venis. This time he was stood behind a camera perched on a tripod. “You know, this isn’t the only tripod around here”. Venis chuckled to himself, then said that he’s done some of his best work in front of the camera, and he was happy to keep up his “high performance” when he comes to SmackDown very shortly. “But for now, daddy’s got some work to do.” Venis winked and then began to remove his towel as he stepped onto the other side of the camera, the screen immediately steaming up. (D- / 39)

- Marlena managed to catch up to Chris Benoit backstage, asking him why he just attacked Rick Steiner for no apparent reason. “No reason? Last week he stuck his nose in my business, he insulted me, and now I’m gonna show him what happens when you get involved in my business.” (C+ / 66)

THE MAIN EVENT!
VS
WWF GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND
BRET HART vs. ROB VAN DAM

It was the biggest match of young Rob Van Dam’s career as he took on multi-time WWF World Champion Bret Hart, but this is a new show and if there ever was an opportunity for Van Dam to pick up a career-making win it was here in the first round of the tournament. Bret was intent to do everything to stop that from happening but found himself with his back to the wall thanks to Van Dam’s dangerous strikes and high-risk offence. Eventually Bret found an opening and began working over Rob’s leg, reducing his motion. The result meant that Van Dam’s offence was severely limited as Bret knew exactly what he was doing, viciously working over the leg , including driving it into the turnbuckle over and over.

This certainly wasn’t the Bret Hart the WWF fans used to love as he was meticulous in his assault. Van Dam fought back as best he could and even clocked Bret with a massive kick that might have hurt his leg as much as Hart’s jaw. Van Dam attempted to go up top but his leg quickly gave way and Hart capitalised, grabbing him from the turnbuckle, dropping him with a DDT and then locking in the Sharpshooter. Van Dam held on as long as he could but the damage was done and he had no choice but to tap out. Van Dam had fought with heart and impressed the entire crowd but tonight was Bret Hart’s night, and if his performance and attitude are anything to go by then it might just be his tournament as well.

WINNER: Bret Hart
RATING: B+ (84)

SHOW RATING: B / 82
