Edit: I was mistaken in my last post saying that New Mexico State started the year in the top 25. They finished last season at #23 and it went unnoticed by me. They are not ranked to start the season.

Omaha (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (0-0)

Final Score: Omaha - 59, Grand Canyon - 63. We came back from down 9 to win this one and it was an absolute team effort. Adolph Gentry had a dreadful debut as he picked up 4 fouls and recorded 0 points and only 1 rebound in 11 minutes. Enoch Scull had 17 points and Odis Deck had 13. Joseph Goodrich's debut went ok with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Luther Reid only played 1 minute in his debut and had 2 points. Michael Jackson played 21 minutes off the bench and had 4 points and 4 rebounds. Corey Duncan had 15 minutes off the bench with 6 points. The bench accounted for 21 points in this one as the foul trouble by Gentry forced us into an early big man rotation. We also won the turnover battle committing 11 to their 18. We almost blew it by missing free throws as we went 21-31 from the line. I'm going to adjust minutes to try and get Smith and Reid some more minutes.

Grand Canyon (1-0) vs. Abilene Christian (0-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 72, Abilene Christian - 64. This was another one where the bench came up huge and was a true team win. The bench had 22 points and we had 15 assists to their 5. Odis Deck had 15 points and 6 rebounds while Adolph Gentry had 11 points and 6 rebounds in limited minutes due to foul trouble. Our free throw shooting was atrocious in this one as we went 24-40 from the line. Luckily Abilene Christian was also terrible as they shot 28-44.

November 23, 1940

Grand Canyon (2-0) vs. Dartmouth (0-1)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 81, Dartmouth - 63. This one was over early and our lead at one point swelled to 30 points. We shot 10-16 from 3 which is how we got out to a big lead early. Enoch Scull had 20 points, Timothy Swart had 19, and Odis Deck had 18. Only 15 points from the bench this game but they played more minutes than usual with the big lead. One thing I've noticed so far is our blocks are way up this season and we had 5 in this game. We had never had more than 4 blocks in a game our first two seasons and this year we have had 2 five block games and a 6 block game.

November 25, 1940

Incarnate Word (0-2) vs. Grand Canyon (3-0)

Final Score: Incarnate Word - 65, Grand Canyon - 57. This was such an ugly game as both teams blew 10 point leads but again our free throw shooting killed us. This time we "only" missed 7 going 8-15 but our 5-24 from 3 sank us. We lost due to Horace Williams being in at the end of the game and shooting 3 after 3 and committing turnover after turnover despite our best player being on the bench and rested. Odis Deck had 18 points and Enoch Scull was an atrocious 1-12 from the field. We couldn't buy a bucket late in this one and unfortunately took a hard loss.

Recruiting News

We have been very active already with 5 scholarships available to offer. With that being said we have already heard back from 3 potential student-athletes before the first game of the season.

PG Charles Shade from New Mexico has declined our scholarship and will instead attend the University of New Mexico.

PG Venceslas Rubio from California has declined our scholarship offer and will instead attend Pepperdine University.

With those two out of the way I do have some good news!

SF John Lai from Scottsdale, Arizona has committed to Grand Canyon University next season! John Lai is a 2 star recruit who made All-State in highschool and is the #619 overall recruit. The only other team interested in him was New Mexico but they did not offer him a scholarship. Lai is a pure shooter who has the potential to be deadly from 3 point range and he also is a great free throw shooter. On top of that he also has a well developed inside game and he can score from the inside or outside. Of course though he is a 2 star prospect for a reason and that is because his defense is really lacking and he isn't a great ballhandler. He's somebody who could really thrive with a pass first PG and luckily we have one of those!

Grand Canyon (3-1) vs. North Carolina Central (0-6)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 63, North Carolina Central - 71. This one is a really bad loss. Looking at the rosters this was the easiest matchup we have ever had as North Carolina Central doesn't have a single player who would make our bench. We had 18 defensive rebounds and they had 10 offensive rebounds so we gave them every chance to follow up their misses. The biggest problem with this team is there is no consistency and a guy can have 20 points one day and then 3 points the next. Timothy Swart had 18 points and both Adolph Gentry and Michael Jackson had 11.

December 6, 1940

Grand Canyon (3-2) vs. Northern Kentucky (1-3)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 65, Northern Kentucky - 61. We almost blew this one by missing free throws but we were able to sneak out with a win. Odis Deck had 20 points and the bench came up big again with 20 points of their own. Right now the biggest concern for the team in my opinion is our inability to rebound and how our big men barely pull any down. At the end of the day though we were able to get the win and that is what matters! I need to remember that this team is still young and will get better as our freshmen and sophomores age. I get a little too excited after good starts and forget that I need to stay realistic with my expectations.

December 10, 1940

UMass Lowell (0-5) vs. Grand Canyon (4-2)

Final Score: UMass Lowell - 56, Grand Canyon - 71. We got out to a double digit lead early and the lead never dropped to single digits in the second half. Timothy Swart had 14 points and both Adolph Gentry and Enoch Scull had 10 points. The bench scored 20 points and played well in this one and this was a nice win to keep momentum moving.

December 14, 1940

Grand Canyon (5-2) vs. Howard (1-4)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 45, Howard - 63. The score was tied 43 all but Howard ended the game on a 20-2 run to win the game and we only made one bucket the final 13 minutes. Another very poor game from us as Howard had 18 offensive rebounds to our 16 defensive rebounds. That isn't a typo. We actually played pretty well but Howard got way too many second chance points and it is actually embarrassing how this team can't rebound.

December 18, 1940

Grand Canyon (5-3) vs. The Citadel (0-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 63, The Citadel - 80. Embarrassing. We are the team you play when you need a win on your schedule.

December 23, 1940

SIU-Edwardsville (0-9) vs. Grand Canyon (5-4)

Final Score: SIU-Edwardsville - 80, Grand Canyon - 75 in TRIPLE OT. In the first two overtimes we blew 5 point leads with under 30 seconds to go and committed 17 turnovers while going 11-24 from the free throw line. An absolute disgrace not just to the school anymore but we are disgracing basketball and the NCAA.

December 27, 1940

Grand Canyon (5-5) vs. Fordham (7-2)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 72, Fordham - 52. I can't believe we won this one after losing 3 straight games to pitiful opponents. I changed up our playstyle from the slowest setting to the fastest setting and it looks like it worked. Horace Williams had 16 points and Michael Jackson had 10 while the bench as the bench outscored the starters 37-35. We went 11-18 from 3 which was a big part of our success. Even in the win we still only went 15-26 from the free throw line.

December 31, 1940

Grand Canyon (6-5) vs. Florida International (2-8)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 86, Florida International - 75. Timothy Swart had 19 points and Enoch Scull had 16 to go with 4 assists. Luther Reid had the best game of his career with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and Michael Jackson had 10 rebounds. The pace was pretty crazy in this one and it caused both teams to commit 29 fouls. Florida International attempted 52 free throws and we attempted 36!

Away Record: 5-3

Team News

PF Corey Duncan has been deemed academically ineligible and will miss the remainder of the season. Duncan has appeared in all 12 games averaging 2.3 points and 2.8 rebounds in 9.6 minutes. His absence will push Augusto Pastor into playing more minutes.

Update

Just a fun little update but of our 5 losses, 4 of them have been to teams who have no other wins (as of January 1st)!

January 4, 1941

North Dakota (2-8) vs. Grand Canyon (7-5)

Final Score: North Dakota - 63, Grand Canyon - 60. This one can't be blamed on the coaching as we committed 2 turnovers with under a minute to play and missed 13 free throws. They really ought to change that name because they aren't free for us. We shot under 29% in this game from the field. Timothy Swart and Enoch Scull had 11 points and Luther Reid had 7 off the bench.

January 7, 1941

Grand Canyon (7-6) vs. North Florida (2-11)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 72, North Florida - 70. This one wasn't as close as the final score dictated since the final 4 possessions we missed all 8 free throws and they made three 3's. Luckily there wasn't enough time for them to get a shot off to end the game. We went 29-44 from the free throw line which just isn't good enough. This one was a great team effort though as four of the starters scored in double digits and the only one who didn't scored 8 points and had 11 rebounds (Adolph Gentry). Odis Deck and Enoch Scull both had 15 points, Timothy Swart had 13, and Joseph Goodrich had 10. We only had 11 points off the bench but they weren't asked to do all that much.

January 11, 1941

Grand Canyon (8-6) vs. UC Riverside (4-8)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 76, UC Riverside - 73. This is another one where the game wasn't as close as the score indicates. We missed 5 of our final 66 free throws to let a big lead get much smaller. We had 3 turnovers in the first half and 8 in the first 5 minutes of the second half which let us go from a double digit lead to a big deficit. The bench had 19 in this one headlined by Michael Jackson's 11 to go along with 7 rebounds. Enoch Scull had 23 points and Timothy Swart had 14. Our free throw shooting improved a little as we went 31-44. I've realized that our fast paced offense seems to get our opponent in foul trouble early which definitely helps, but the one problem is that it makes us less efficient when we shoot free throws vs. normal shots. This was the last tuneup before conference play and we are amazingly the only team in the conference with a winning record.

January 16, 1941

Grand Canyon (9-6) vs. Chicago State (3-11)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 91, Chicago State - 99. This was by far the best game we have ever played but we lost because we absolutely cannot rebound. They had 15 offensive rebounds to our 19 defensive rebounds and they shot 37-42 from the free throw line compared to our 22-32. All 5 starters scored in double digits and if we could rebound we'd have won this one by 20. Timothy Swart had a game with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Joseph Goodrich had 17 points, Adolph Gentry had 12, Enoch Scull had 14, and Odis Deck had 13. The bench had 24 points and played well.

January 18, 1941

Grand Canyon (9-7) vs. UT Rio Grande Valley (5-9)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 68, UT Rio Grande Valley - 70. We were called for 11 fouls before UT Rio Grande Valley was called for one. We had to fight from a 17 points deficit after only 7 minutes. We somehow went into half only down 9 since we were outplaying them but it didn't matter since fouls were being called on almost every shot they attempted. Everytime we went on a run in the second half the refs would bail them out with fouls or we would go on stretches of committing 2-3 straight turnovers. I wish I could make it so the offseason training was strictly defensive rebounding and free throw shooting. I don't care about these players developing anything else at this point. Even the guys I bring in who are strictly defensive players can't rebound. Well over half of their points came off second chance points and points from turnovers. If only we could rebound or make free throws. They had 16 offensive rebounds to our 20 defensive rebounds. Another game where we absolutely outplayed the other team but our Achilles heel is so glaring that no matter how well we play or how bad the other team plays we cannot get past it. Our opponent only made 4 field goals this game that were on the first attempt of the drive. We could have held them to under 30 points. Ok I ranted in this recap as well as the next game. In this game Enoch Scull had 16 points and Odis Deck had 11. Deck had 4 assists and Scull had 3.

January 23, 1941

Seattle (4-11) vs. Grand Canyon (9-8)

Final Score: Seattle - 85, Grand Canyon - 79 in OVERTIME. We lost this game by missing two free throws with 10 seconds left to seal it. We are truly the worst team in basketball. 22 turnovers and 22-36 from the free throw line. It is absolutely embarrassing that we should easily be 3-0 in conference play but have thrown away the lead in every single game right at the end. I have no idea what to do with a team with a roster this good that cannot beat anybody, it truly makes no sense. Enoch Scull had 21 points and Odis Deck had 17. Joseph Goodrich had 10 points and 9 rebounds. Deck also had 5 assists.

January 25, 1941

UMKC (7-10) vs. Grand Canyon (9-9)

I know I have complained a lot and it isn't fair to do so. Yes, we have some holes but I have to live with the team I recruited. A lot of the teams that we play that have awful records have those record because they play good teams in Non-conference play. We play cupcake games and can still barely come out with a winning record which shows that while we see them as easy wins they also see us as the same. We have a long way to go until the program reaches a point where we can reach any level of postseason play but we are moving in the right direction evidenced by how many freshmen play minutes for us each year. I do like our fast paced offense as it reminds me of how UNLV played in their heyday and how Nevada played this past year. I think it will be easier to build around offense in this conference and I will be recruiting a lot of players who can shoot you out of the building. Hopefully as we improve we can get a few more recruits who are great on both sides of the ball. I have to remember that we are on the bottom of the totem pole for a reason and that we have a long ways to go. Sometimes it is hard to remember that since it feels like we play awful teams but as I mentioned earlier that is deceiving.

There is a reason our goal right now is only to avoid last place in the conference since that is seen as an achievement. I need to keep that in mind when I get frustrated with the team.

Final Score: UMKC - 61, Grand Canyon - 72. This one was all about the bench! We went out to an early deficit but fought back as our offense was too much for them to handle. A 1-3 isn't what we envisioned but it is a lot better than 0-4. 25 bench points lifted us up when we needed it as Lamar Smith had 10 and Michael Jackson had 9 with 10 rebounds in 23 minutes. Jackson was brought in as a transfer simply because I needed a body to play maybe 5-6 minutes in replacement of our big men and wow he has exceeded expectations and he leads the team in rebounds. He also has forced himself into the rotation so much that he averages as many minutes as Joseph Goodrich. Part of the reason for this though is that Goodrich has low stamina and can only handle around 25-28 minutes a game. Odis Deck had 14 points and 6 rebounds! Enoch Scull had 11 points and Adolph Gentry had 10. We were a bit improved from the line at 27-38 but still a bit disappointing. I have not looked at free throw shooting much when recruiting since we have normally not shot many from the charity stripe but since shifting to our fast paced offense we have been regularly attempting 30+ from the line.

Grand Canyon (10-9) vs. New Mexico State (10-9)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 74, New Mexico State - 73. Timothy Swart hits a buzzer beater to win the game! We made this one stressful though as we blew a 10 point lead with 4 minutes left and didn't make any free throws the final 4 minutes of the game. Swart had a stellar game with 20 points and 9 rebounds! I could tell early we had a chance in this one with how poorly New Mexico State was playing and they weren't taking advantage of our mistakes. We went 24-38 from the line but luckily overcame the struggles. They made 10 threes (they shot 40%) and were led by Matthew Royce who had 15 points and 9 assists. Odis Deck had 19 points and Enoch Scull had 10 points. We got them into early foul trouble in the first half and were were in the double bonus only 7 minutes into the game. Unfortunately it probably hurt us more than it helped with how many free throws we missed. This is the biggest win in the history of our program as we were able to take down the giant! We have had some bad games and even blew the 10 point lead in this one but I am really seeing the potential this team has.

Overall Record: 11-9
Home Record: 3-4
Away Record: 8-5
Conference Record: 2-3
Ranking: NR
RPI: 351

We are currently 1st in the country in points per shot at 1.45. The problem is we're 320th in the country in defending that as our opponents average 1.31. We are also 20th in the country in 3 point percentage (38.6%) and 39th in adjusted field goal percentage (52.2%). Our fast paced offense also is drawing the most fouls per game in the country with our opponents averaging 24.4! These are definite positives and make me feel very good about the program. Part of this is definitely the weak competition we have played but it is good to see these numbers nonetheless.

Recruiting News

We have some big recruiting news to conclude the month! Malcolm Bufford and Terry Clegg have committed to play for Grand Canyon next season!

Bufford is a SG from Phoenix, Arizona who is a 2 star prospect and the #650 overall prospect. He averaged 23.1 points per game and already has a well refined jump shot and has the potential to be deadly from the outside while also being a threat to drive to the hoop. He's a solid defender but not anything special. He also drew interest from Northern Arizona, New Mexico State, Montana State, and San Diego.

Our second recruit is Terry Clegg who is a SF from Adelaide, Australia! Clegg is a 3 star prospect, the #382 overall prospect, and the #3 prospect from Australia! I really don't think we would have been able to get him if he wasn't international. He was only on my radar because he had interest in Grand Canyon early on and no other schools. We were the only one that offered him but he eventually drew interest from Syracuse, Florida, Vanderbilt, and Illinois. He has the potential to contribute from 3 but his value will be his inside game where he has the potential to be a stud. He is a solid defender but is allergic to rebounding.

We were also turned down by C Clayton Gittens who has decided to attend Utah State. Gittens was a JC transfer.

Grand Canyon (11-9) vs. Cal State Bakersfield (6-13)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 61, Cal State Bakersfield - 71. After scoring 20 points in the first half Cal State Bakersfield scored 51 in the second half. They did not miss a shot from the 11 minute mark until the 4 minute mark. They shot 18% in the first half and at the end of the game shot 52%. That shows you what we dealt with the second half. The absolute luckiest thing I have ever seen in this game. Michael Jackson had 8 points and 11 rebounds off the bench and was our best player. Timothy Swart had 11 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists and nobody else reached double digits. It is a shame we couldn't win this one but credit Bakersfield for their 51 point second half.

Grand Canyon (11-10) vs. Utah Valley (3-18)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 85, Utah Valley - 77. We made it a close one at the end but we had a comfortable double digit lead all game. Timothy Swart tied a career high with 26 points and went 6-10 from the 3 point line. He also only played 28 minutes because of foul trouble! We went 28-41 from the line but luckily Utah Valley went 33-51. We racked up 30 fouls in this one (they had 27) and had one player foul out and four others have 4 fouls. Enoch Scull had all zeroes at halftime but ended the game with 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and one rebound. Odis Deck was the only other player to score in double digits with 10.

February 13, 1941

UT-Rio Grande Valley (10-11) vs. Grand Canyon (12-10)

Final Score: UT-Rio Grande Valley - 66, Grand Canyon - 63. Once again we shot ourselves in the foot as a 6 points lead with 2 minutes left evaporated after back-to-back turnovers and a night where we went 7-28 from the 3 point line. I really wish we could close out games. We play amazing for 38 minutes and then blow any lead we had in the final 2. Timothy Swart had 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists while Odis Deck had 14 points. Unfortunately Deck went 3-10 from 3 and Enoch Scull went 1-9. If they had stopped being selfish and passed the ball or taken 2's this game would have been easily won. We seem to play every game close as we have had 7 games that came down to the final possession.

February 15, 1941

Chicago State (8-14) vs. Grand Canyon (12-11)

Final Score: Chicago State - 71, Grand Canyon - 77. This was actually interesting as we didn't make our first 2 point bucket until 1:36 left in the first half. Before it we had 29 points, 24 off 6 3's and 5 from the free throw line. Despite that we only trailed 35-29. I didn't think we deserved to win this one but we did enough to end up getting the victory! Enoch Scull and Lamar Smith led the team with 14 points while Odis Deck had 12 and Joseph Goodrich had 10. Timothy Swart only had 6 points but pulled down 10 rebounds and dished 4 assists.

February 20, 1941

Grand Canyon (13-11) vs. Seattle (8-15)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 73, Seattle - 71. We blew another double digit lead, this one by 6 straight turnovers once the 9 minute mark hit. We didn't attempt a shot for a 4 minute 23 second span. Once the two minute mark hit we never attempted another shot due to turnovers (they never fouled us when we had the lead because we continued to turn it over). Luckily they couldn't take advantage. Timothy Swart had 16 points and Lamar Smith had 12 off the bench (in only 16 minutes). Michael Jackson was huge again with 8 points and 9 rebounds. This one was a huge win as it took us to 5-5 in conference play. We went 5-9 each of our first 2 seasons in conference play so if we can manage one more win we'll have a program record.

Important: The next two games I originally lost to UMKC and won against Jacksonville but my computer died and I forgot to save. Out of fairness I simmed them until I lost the UMKC one and won the Jacksonville one.

February 22, 1941

Grand Canyon (14-11) vs. UMKC (11-13)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 63, UMKC - 98. We originally lost this one by blowing a 10 point lead with 2 minutes left so this is a lot easier to take. Joseph Goodrich had 12 points and Enoch Scull had 10.

February 24, 1941

Jacksonville (19-10) vs. Grand Canyon (14-12)

Final Score: Jacksonville - 76, Grand Canyon - 82. This one is a huge win as we beat a team that is 19-10 and 3rd in their conference. Odis Deck and Timothy Swart had 16 points and Swart had 8 rebounds and 6 assists to go along with it. Enoch Scull recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The writeups for these are a little shorter since instead of watching the play-by-play I just simmed through the games.

February 27, 1941

New Mexico State (16-11) vs. Grand Canyon (15-12)

Final Score: New Mexico State - 91, Grand Canyon - 55. New Mexico State came out looking for revenge and they got it! After we beat them on their court they came out and destroyed us on ours! The story of this game was our 20 turnovers to their 5. We also couldn't stop their offense as they shot 56% and make 11 threes while we shot 41%. I was hoping we could hang with them here but it is definitely a bit disappointing to see our last two conference games be huge blowouts.

Overall Record: 15-13
Home Record: 5-6
Away Record: 10-7
Conference Record: 5-7

Cal State Bakersfield (12-15) vs. Grand Canyon (15-13)

Final Score: Cal State Bakersfield - 71, Grand Canyon - 78. We got into foul trouble early and the bench was forced to play a total of 105 minutes. Enoch Scull fouled out and only played 12 minutes but had 17 points. Timothy Swart only played 19 minutes and had only 5 points but racked up 5 assists. Odis Deck had 13 points and Joseph Goodrich had 12 points. Michael Jackson had 6 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Adolph Gentry was injured in this game and will miss 25 days with a broken cheekbone which will end his season.

Team News

With the injury to Gentry we will have Michael Jackson starting at Center and Goodrich will be moved to PF.

March 8, 1941

Utah Valley (6-22) vs. Grand Canyon (16-13)

Final Score: Utah Valley - 76, Grand Canyon - 58. In the first half we had 24 points, 17 fouls, and 13 turnovers. They had 4 fouls and 2 turnovers. It is amazing we were only down 13 and not 30. This game was just so boring and ridiculous as we committed 22 turnovers and 32 fouls. Awful that we lost the game due to that, no idea where all these fouls are coming from. We made 19 shots in the game so that means more possessions ended in a turnover than a made shot. Horrid. Enoch Scull had 14 points and nobody else topped 7. Really disappointing loss.

Here are the final standings for the WAC this season!

WAC First Round

Grand Canyon (16-14) vs. UMKC (14-15)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 67, UMKC - 79. We went 7-19 from the free throw line and it cost us our chance to win the game. Enoch Scull had 24 points and Odis Deck had 15 in his final career game. Along with those missed free throws we also allowed 15 offensive rebounds and those second chance points hurt us badly.

Here is the rest of the WAC tournament. Things went just about as planned besides the final when UMKC upset 1 seed New Mexico State by 21 points.

Here is how the NCAA season went! In a HUGE surprise I was named the Coach of the Year in the WAC! We also had Timothy Swart named to the first team All-WAC conference team. The player of the year was Matthew Royce from New Mexico State.

Time for the NCAA tournament for the 1940-1941 season!

First is the West region!

UMKC was at least able to win the play-in game to give the first ever tournament win for the WAC! The biggest upset in the first round was 10 seed Arizona State beating 7 seed LSU. The big upsets came in the 2nd round though as 9 seed San Diego State took down 1 seed Arizona, 10 seed Arizona State took down 2 seed Duke, and 6 seed Memphis beat 3 seed Texas. 5 seed Texas Tech and Arizona State matched up in the Elite 8 to set up a 5 vs. 10 matchup which the 5 seed Texas Tech won to punch their ticket to the Final Four!

Next up is the Midwest region!

We had a HUGE upset in this one as 15 seed James Madison topped 2 seed Kansas by 1 point! Then 14 seed Sam Houston State took notice and beat 3 seed Stanford as well! Even 11 seed Fairfield beat 6 seed Houston (by 22 points!). This is already the 2nd time in history a 15 seed has beaten a 2 seed! In the 2nd round 8 seed Washington topped 1 seed Ohio State, 7 seed Saint Joseph's beat James Madison and Fairfield beat Sam Houston State. In the Sweet 16 4 seed Butler topped Washington and Saint Joseph's beat Fairfield. This set up a 4 seed vs. 7 seed and the 4 seed Butler won to make the Final Four!

Next we have the South region!

ANOTHER 2 seed goes down as 15 seed Davidson beat the 2 seed Illinois!!! This region also saw 12 seed IPFW beat 5 seed Oklahoma in the first round. The region was pretty cut and dry after that as 1 seed North Carolina topped 3 seed Oklahoma State to advance to the Final Four!

Last we have the East Region!

This region did see the 2 seed win but had 12 seed Portland State top 5 seed BYU and my alma mater, 10 seed Richmond, beat 7 seed Cincinnati. The only upset in the round of 32 was 6 seed West Virginia beating 3 seed Kentucky. 1 seed Louisville beat 2 seed Xavier to advance to the Final Four!

Now it is time for the Final Four!

In the first semifinal 1 seed North Carolina took down 5 seed Texas Tech by 22 points. In the second semifinal 1 seed Louisville topped 4 seed Butler by 38 points. The national championship was a thriller but Louisville won it by 7 points! Congratulations to the Cardinals!

1940-1941 Senior Appreciation Day!

Here is our 3rd annual senior appreciation day!

Our first Senior is PG Odis Deck who started 85 games and came off the bench for an additional 7. He average 9.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists during his career. He was 7 times named the player of the game and his career highs were 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Deck was not an amazing player but was a key player given that he was better than what else we had on the roster, especially in that he was developed and could play while the young players developed on the bench.

We definitely improved from last season as our overall record was 16-15 but our conference record was 6-8 which is an improvement on our 5-9 record the past two seasons. We are still looking for that first winning season in conference play but we must be patient as we only had one person playing major minutes who wasn't a freshman or sophomore. Hopefully these guys can continue developing and we can bring in more players who can provide depth or even redshirt.

As you can see we were 3rd in the nation in points per shot and 28th in 3 point percentage. We were also 2nd in the nation in fouls drawn but 334th in fouls committed. Our defense needs a lot of work and was a big theme of the season and it is something we are really working on and will look towards fixing in the near future. Our season ending RPI was 349 which shows, like I always say, that while our record may look good it is because we always schedule the worst of the worst. This is an attempt to make the program look better and not go something like 7-23 every year.

Also!

Just like last offseason the Athletic Director has notified me that he will be upgrading the training facilities. They started out 0 and after last season are up to 6 now! I thought this was a minor upgrade but it moves us from 8th in the conference to 6th so hopefully this can help in recruiting even if it is just against other low quality programs.

Also, our prestige rose up to 4! So after seeing it go from 0 to 1 and 1 to 2 it now doubled from 2 to 4. These are baby steps but good steps to take.

Recruiting News

You may notice that there are two names that I had not mentioned in our incoming players section. They were commits the last sim of the season and I'll introduce them here.

Jerry Munos is a 1 star Center from Delta, Utah who has the potential to be a defensive rebounding stud. He is lacking everywhere else on defense but we need a guy who can just grab down every rebound and stop the second chance opportunities. He also has a decent offensive game and should be able to score decently from the inside and may even be able to jack up some 3s with confidence. He is a strong candidate to redshirt his freshman year as he will be behind 4 other big men.

David Harmon is a 1 star Point Guard from San Francisco, California. Harmon is a great free throw shooter and passer who should be able to limit turnovers but plays mediocre defense. He is also a candidate to redshirt and will depend on what our lineup looks like heading into next season.

1941 Offseason

The only conference movement we had seen before this season was Gonzaga and Oregon State switching conferences. This offseason though saw BYU leave the WCC for the Mountain West while San Jose State drops from the MWC to the WCC. Rought for the WCC to lose Gonzaga and BYU. Also on a much mroe minor note East Tennessee State left the Southern for the Horizon League and Northern Kentucky made the opposite swap.

Here is our roster for the upcoming season:

Code:
Player # Pos Yr Ht Wt Sch Acd Status Hometown

Malcolm Bufford 45 SG Fr 6-4 193 Yes 21 OK Phoenix, AZ
This team is still insanely young as we only have on senior on the roster but we hope we can take a step forward with Scull, Swart, and Smith all juniors. This is our second straight year with 5 freshmen but I don't think this year's class is as good as the one we brought in last season.

Remember, we only have one scholarship to offer for next season so I'm going to go after as many highly rated players I can since I know I only need one commitment and not 4-5. So I can spend a lot of money on recruiting and visits knowing I only need to spend money to get one player here. I'm looking forward to this aggressive recruiting and while the top of my wish list is a big man I still won't turn down a top talent at a position of depth if it is available.

1941-1942 Season Preview

Here is the preview for our upcoming season which is one I am very excited for! Replacing Odis Deck in the starting lineup will not be an easy task but we bring in multiple players who can play and contribute.

Athletic Director Goal

For the fourth season in a row our goal is to avoid last place in the conference which we hopefully can accomplish again!

News

We found out just before games started that Enoch Scull has been deemed academically ineligible for the first semester and cannot play until January 1st. I haven't even gotten to the depth chart portion yet but it is going to make a huge change in what we do this season.

Starting Lineup

PG Luther Reid (SO)
SG Timothy Swart (JR)
SF Terry Clegg (FR)
PF Adolph Gentry (SO)
C Joseph Goodrich (SO)

6th - SG Malcolm Bufford (FR). Bufford will be the first man off the bench and will play SG and SF. He's a great 3 point shooter and has a nice mid-range shot as well.

7th - PG Lamar Smith (JR). Smith has been a great player off the bench and we will ask him to continue that role this season.

8th - C Michael Jackson (SO*). Jackson will look to build on a strong freshman season and hopefully he can continue to build on that.

9th - SF Horace Williams (SR*). Williams is our first true SF off the bench but when Clegg comes out Swart will move over or Bufford will come in before Williams plays.

10th - PF Corey Duncan (SO). Duncan had academic issues last season but he should play solid minutes this season and can hopefully be a rebounding machine in the future.

Originally Enoch Scull was our starting PG but things changed with his suspension. Him and Swart shift to the smaller positions they are more suited for with Deck graduating and us bringing in a true SF this year.

Southeast Missouri State (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (0-0)

Final Score: Southeast Missouri State - 65, Grand Canyon - 80. Once again my laptop battery died but we had won the game originally and when I re-simmed we also won. Joseph Goodrich had a coming out party with 20 points and Adolph Gentry had 8 points while hauling in 9 rebounds. In his debut Terry Clegg had 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. In Luther Reid's first career start he had 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Malcolm Bufford had a hell of a debut as well with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Grand Canyon (1-0) vs. Little Rock (0-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 93, Little Rock - 81. Malcolm Bufford had 15 points and 6 rebounds off the bench in a huge performance while Terry Clegg scored 16 and Adolph Gentry had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Timothy Swart only had 9 points but had 7 rebounds to go along with 7 assists which is the most in a game in school history!

Grand Canyon (2-0) vs. Colorado State (1-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 69, Colorado State - 66. This one was an absolute thriller that went back and forth! Adolph Gentry made two free throws to give us the lead and then Timothy Swart clinched it with 2 more. This is the best nonconference win in program history to the best of my knowledge as I believe Colorado State is the highest profile team we have beaten. No one player really carried the team in this one as Timothy Swart led with 15 points but Terry Clegg had 11 and Malcolm Bufford had 12 off the bench. Adolph Gentry had another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and the team picked up Joseph Goodrich who shot 2-10 from the floor. The team made free throws when they needed to and went 17-21 from the line. We allowed 16 offensive rebounds but were somehow able to get the victory while only pulling down 8 of our own. A really big win and I'm really proud of the team, they are playing very well so far this season and I can tell just how much of an improvement there has been.

Update

When the new mid-major Top 25 poll came out we were ranked number 22! Also on the day of the Army game (before the game) our RPI was 20. I know it is early and it fluctuates a lot early on but normally at this point in the season our RPI is already 351. I'm just glad to see the boys getting some recognition for the hard work they have put in!

Grand Canyon (3-0) vs. Army (0-2)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 65, Army - 72. This game was rough as we committed 18 fouls in the first half to their 9. We had no chance after that but still made it a close game despite them shooting 38 free throws. We outplayed them in every aspect of the game but the zebras were too much to overcome. Terry Clegg had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and Timothy Swart had 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. The key player in this one though was Lamar Smith who had 21 points off the bench. We're going to try to forget about this game as quickly as possible and move on to the next one where, hopefully, we don't get boned by refs. I'm still proud of the guys because, despite the loss, they played well and it wasn't us beating ourselves like happens often.

November 30, 1941

Grand Canyon (3-1) vs. Florida International (0-3)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 80, Florida International - 77. This one was close throughout. Malcolm Bufford had 17 big points off the bench to go with 7 rebounds and Michael Jackson had 5 points and 11 rebounds off the bench as well. Terry Clegg had 17 points as well and Timothy Swart had 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Overall Record: 4-1
Home Record: 1-0
Road Record: 3-1
Ranking: NR
RPI: 105

As of now series is on hold and over. Can't get into the game right now.

Thanks for reading. This is my 3rd attempt and all 3 times I've realized the game is just completely random and ratings have no bearing on skill.
