Lightbulb Call for Random Event Ideas!

Hey all,
I'm starting to code this up now. Bear in mind these can be shut off in the Options at the start of a game if you desire.

These are ideas for 'random events' that can occur that change up gameplay or make something unexpected happen. I have around 10 in there already (they cause your crew to gain or lose experience points, you can gain or lose money, and you can gain or lose Respect points, which can be used for various benefits).

What other random things can happen during a mob crew's reign? List of ideas, scanarios, general and specific, are welcomed, and you'll even get credited in the game if you like!

I'll be monitoring this thread a few times a day for awhile. I look forward to your ideas!

An event where you get approached by a stronger gang to do a task for them. Should be time-sensitive.

A new mayor is elected on a promise to clean up and crack down on organised crime.

Makes it more difficult and more expensive to bribe, more likely that your crew gets arrested in the short term, and maybe unless you severely tone down the publicly visible and strongarm actions, after a year or two of the police building up a case it could rip your crew to shreds.

Nice! Added. (would affect police presence on streets and increase chance of arrests temporarily)

What about random defections from other gangs? Or maybe even defection from yours? That should give info and prompt enemies to which the defector switched sides to attack the gang of origin of the defector. Plus if someone defects to your gang, it should decrease relations with the other gang (assuming that other gangs do exist, which I forgot if it was a feature of the game, planned or implemented).

late to the party but here are some ideas:

A civilian death grabs the attention of the media and leads to a crackdown (maybe a cop, or a child)

A new, dangerous drug becomes popular. You have to decide to take the increased risk of moving a dangerous product, or face mutiny from your underlings missing out on a big payday.

A former member of your crew is writing a book. Do you risk shutting him up or ignore it?

Your top lieutenant has become erratic due to drug use. Do you try to clean him up, let him run wild, or make him disappear?

The feds come to town. They can't be bought and killing one brings the hammer of the federal government, but they are only in town temporarily.

A high profile politician's child is kidnapped. You can use your influence in the underworld to get answers, but could get blamed if things don't turn out well.

Prohibition starts or ends
Gambling is legalized/made illegal
Various changes to drug policies affecting such things as whether users go to jail or rehab

How about:

)An small unaffiliated gang (social club/street gang/etc) sets up a racket in your turf.

The player could approach them to affiliate them and recruit members (or use them as a sort of feeder league), keep them unaffiliated but hire them for freelance work, muscle them out and into a different territory, alert the law to their presence (with evidence, etc.), kill them (or attack their HQ, etc), do nothing. Eventually, a minor street gang or social club could grow into a major syndicate/faction in the game.

)The same kind of thing could happen with unaffiliated, unrecruited criminals. They start a racket and/or start recruiting their own gang.

)All kinds of freelance criminal work could fall onto a gangster's plate: business espionage, political tampering/sabotage, gov't employees could hire gangsters to sabotage buildings or intimidate citizens, etc.

One thing I really enjoyed about Stellaris is the dedicated mini plot lines. It is a random procedural game as well but it has pre-scripted narratives to give a bit more story and cohesion.

Having played through the game a billion times I do just click through the events instead of reading them for the 100th time but because they usually don’t have a guaranteed “best” option i still pay attention and appreciate the interaction of the event to the game.

Therefore it would be awesome if the random events were more then “+X to this stat” or “-X to this type of crime”.

Here are some idea for more narrative focused special events:

1) A celebrity dies of a drug overdose prompting grassroots activist organizations against drugs. drug dealing is harder and carries stiffer penalties because of this but prices also climb up as drugs get pulled off the street but the demand is still present. This could trigger multiple events in a chain or branching event chain where the activists step up their game and the risks/rewards get steeper culminating in the activist running for local congress. If they get elected the penalties become permanent but if you can ensure their defeat (possibly by just pushing more drugs proving their actions are for naught or maybe blackmailing or rigging the election) then the penalties are lifted and the city goes back to normal.

2) Romeo and Juliet. One of your lieutenants falls in love for the cousin of a rival family. Do you give them your blessing risking leaked information or do you end the relationship causing their morale to tank or for them to leave your organization entirely.

3) High on your own supply. An operative who has dealt a lot of drugs starts partaking. Their stats fall, they start using more then they are selling. Do you ignore it? Discipline them? Kill them as an example?

4) The Mole. Someone in your organization could be ratting to the police. You have narrowed it down to a couple of suspects. Do you kill one? Both? Try to plant counterintel to suss out the real spy? Or maybe it’s just paranoia and both are loyal to you...

5) Overambitious. A star subordinate is starting to mouth off that he/she should be running things. Do you discipline them? Raise them up as your heir apparent?

6) Whore with a heart of gold. One of your lieutenants falls in love with a prostitute working for one of your pimps. They want you to pull them from the streets so they can get married and raise a family. Problem is the prostitute is one of your best earners and your income will take a hit but it will make your lieutenant super loyal to you...or has a slight chance of them running off into the sunset with one another.

7) It turns out one of your subordinates is wanted for war crimes in another country. Maybe there’s a bounty on them? Maybe there are government agents trying to hunt them down? Maybe it provides a big boost in their intimidation knowing they are the Butcher of X-town?

8) One of your lieutenants has developed a taste for murder. Their combat stats climb through the roof but they are also generating a lot of heat as they become a serial killer. Do you protect your budding assassin or cut them loose to avoid the heat or kill them as a service to the city?

9) One of your lieutenants or family members is asking you to hire their cousin. Their cousin is terrible (very poor stats) but hiring them on makes your other lieutenant very happy and they promise you it’s only for a short time...

10) The local college becomes labled the countries top party school. Desire for booze and drugs spikes and opportunities for petty crime increase as drunk/high college kids flood the city.
