Lightbulb Call for Random Event Ideas!

Hey all,
I'm starting to code this up now. Bear in mind these can be shut off in the Options at the start of a game if you desire.

These are ideas for 'random events' that can occur that change up gameplay or make something unexpected happen. I have around 10 in there already (they cause your crew to gain or lose experience points, you can gain or lose money, and you can gain or lose Respect points, which can be used for various benefits).

What other random things can happen during a mob crew's reign? List of ideas, scanarios, general and specific, are welcomed, and you'll even get credited in the game if you like!

I'll be monitoring this thread a few times a day for awhile. I look forward to your ideas!

An event where you get approached by a stronger gang to do a task for them. Should be time-sensitive.

A new mayor is elected on a promise to clean up and crack down on organised crime.

Makes it more difficult and more expensive to bribe, more likely that your crew gets arrested in the short term, and maybe unless you severely tone down the publicly visible and strongarm actions, after a year or two of the police building up a case it could rip your crew to shreds.

Nice! Added. (would affect police presence on streets and increase chance of arrests temporarily)

What about random defections from other gangs? Or maybe even defection from yours? That should give info and prompt enemies to which the defector switched sides to attack the gang of origin of the defector. Plus if someone defects to your gang, it should decrease relations with the other gang (assuming that other gangs do exist, which I forgot if it was a feature of the game, planned or implemented).

late to the party but here are some ideas:

A civilian death grabs the attention of the media and leads to a crackdown (maybe a cop, or a child)

A new, dangerous drug becomes popular. You have to decide to take the increased risk of moving a dangerous product, or face mutiny from your underlings missing out on a big payday.

A former member of your crew is writing a book. Do you risk shutting him up or ignore it?

Your top lieutenant has become erratic due to drug use. Do you try to clean him up, let him run wild, or make him disappear?

The feds come to town. They can't be bought and killing one brings the hammer of the federal government, but they are only in town temporarily.

A high profile politician's child is kidnapped. You can use your influence in the underworld to get answers, but could get blamed if things don't turn out well.

Prohibition starts or ends
Gambling is legalized/made illegal
Various changes to drug policies affecting such things as whether users go to jail or rehab
