ECW July 1994 Round-up

Injuries

Rockin’ Rebel suffered a freak broken leg injury while tagging with Chad Austin vs Bad Breed. A legit accident, Rebel is on the shelf for 6 months but has appeared in small skits with Jason Knight.

Jimmy Snuka suffered a fractured cheek bone at the Heat Wave PPV against Cactus Jack. He doesn't do too much talking anyway and will work through it.

Ray Odyssey suffered a bruised kidney there as well in an opening bout. No more alcohol for you for now!

Contracts

WCW have offered an exclusive PPA deal to Cactus Jack/Mick Foley. ECW has confirmed he’s leaving the company.

Dory Funk Jr. is loaned to IWA-J for a one-night deal.

A number of ECW wrestlers have signed other PPA deals: Shane Douglas, Axl Rotten, Johnny Grunge, Stevie Richards, Curtis Hughes, The Sandman, John Finnigan, Rocco Rock, Ian Rotten, The Pitbulls, Jason Knight are all on that list.

Storylines

Mikey Whipwreck and Jason Knight are battling for the ECW TC Title. This has been ongoing now.

Paul E. Dangerously hired The Public Enemy to take down the Funks. The Funks were absent at Heat Wave due to commitments with SMW…this could be picking up soon, especially with Rocco Rock getting the rub with a win over Cactus Jack.

The Tazmaniac has issues with Jason Knight and the Pitbulls.

Mr. Hughes and 911 have been choke-slamming eachother around. But there are other players involved here, like Paul E. Dangerously and Shane Douglas.

Backstage

Dory Funk Jr. has taken Tommy Dreamer as a protege.

In general the backstage is decent: Mr. Curtis Hughes even made some drawings. Paul E. Dangerously seems to be discontent in general and has taken a disliking to Chad Austin. A few minor issues are handled (or not) between the likes of John Finnigan, Jason Knight, Hughes, Tod Gordon, Chad Austin, … that’s about it.

August 1994 schedule

W1 ECW Hardcore TV
W2 ECW Hardcore TV
W3 ECW Hardcore Heaven 1994
W3 ECW Hardcore TV
W4 ECW Hardcore TV

* Mick Foley is gone from ECW, signing an exclusive PPA deal with WCW. The gentle madman he is, he put a lot of people over in his final ECW appearances.
* Former ECW champion Johnny Hotbody signed a 6 month PPA deal. Some consider it a nostalgia act, as the quality of ECW matches has increased in the past couple of months.
* Sabu's tour with FMW has ended, which means he'll feature on ECW on a regular basis. In combination with Paul E. Dangerously acting as his manager, he should be able to fill the gap left by Foley's departure.
* On the regional battle front, ECW finished 1st in all regions.
* Two new promotion open this month: Steel City Wrestling is founded by Norm Connors. Even if it is located in Tri-State as well, it shouldn't interfere with ECW business. American Wrestling Federation also opens. Paul Alperstein is looking to build a roster for this fed.
* Dory Funk Jr's loan to IWA-J ended as he finished his one-off appearance, losing to Dick Slater.

Glad to see this back! Given the lack of EXTREME at times I've thought writing up a [bare bones] ECW diary, but I .... well, kind of couldn't find the right mod.

ECW August 1994 Round-Up

Injuries

Pitbull#2 suffers a bad back injury at the PPV. He’ll be out for 6 months and that’s bad for the team as they were getting close to the tag title frame.

Dory Funk Jr. suffers a short-term neck injury.

Tommy Cairo breaks his nose at the PPV. Which leads him to winning the SCW title…lol.

Rockin’ Rebel is still out with a broken leg but has appeared in a few angles.

Contracts

A number of wrestlers have signed contracts with Steel City Wrestling, including Tommy Cairo who won the SCW Heavyweight Title. Phi Delta Slam, 911 and Jim Molineux also sign. The new American Wrestling Federation has Tony Stetson signing there.

Tony Stetson and Johnny Hotbody will be pushed as a tag team. Stetson is likely to extend for a couple months to give them a proper run.

Too Cold Scorpio is still touring in NJPW next month.

Storylines

A few changes to the storylines look set to happen: with Pitbull#2 being out, Pitbull#1 may get a larger feud with The Tazmaniac.

Jason Knight cheated The Sandman at the PPV, stating “he prefers to face Mikey Whipwreck for the ECW title instead of The Sandman” which is probably leading to The Sandman getting into that mix.

Jimmy Snuka’s “old grizzled whining veteran” speeches are probably also leading up to something interesting.

Backstage

Chad Austin has turned himself into a problem backstage. He has turned up late on a few occasions but apparantly Paul E. Dangerously has taken a disliking to him, setting up a few members of the roster (most notably: The Tazmaniac, Joey Styles, Tony Stetson and James Maritato) against him. Austin has been a good opener but this makes the backstage look ugly.

Referee John Finnigan also is making a mess backstage: at one show he showed up too late and hardly cared but then he damaged Tod Gordon’s car but refused to pay for it. That got him a fine but also left him annoyed. He has been off TV for a few shows as a result.

Jason Knight and Jim Molineux also showed up late with apparently no excuse or intention of improving.

On the plus: Dory Funk Jr. has taken on 911 as a protege. Which means that now Dory has 911, Tommy Dreamer and Hack Meyers under his wings.
