Episode #132 - "Canadian Invasion"

Forty-eight hours removed from the landscape changing Uncensored, Nitro comes to Toronto with a blockbuster main event.

This past Saturday the unthinkable happened. With all the odds evened and with everything against them, the nWo prevailed once again when Big Sexy Kevin Nash delivered a Jacknife Powerbomb onto World Heavyweight Champion Sting through a table. With the win secured, the Wolfpac now have a title match at a date and time and location of their choosing. What will the nWo do now that power is once again in their hands? WCW.com has learned that the Wolfpac will kick off Nitro with a celebration.

A fax came into WCW.com just this morning from the office of the Chairman of the Executive Committee, James J Dillion, stating that the main event of tonight's Nitro has been set. Though the nWo will no doubt celebrate their Uncensored victory, they must now worry because the main event will see The Outsiders team against WCW World Heavyweight Champion Sting and the man who challenges him at Spring Stampede, Canada's own Bret "the Hitman" Hart. What will happen when these four collide at the SkyDome?

Bobby Heenan's man has been revealed but the identity of this individual surprised everyone. At the conclusion of his vanquish of Raven, Goldberg was prepared to move on when the Brain made his way out. Goldberg rejected Heenan only to be attacked by the returning Giant who devastated the up and comer and apparently he has been Bobby's man all along. The Giant and Heenan will be on hand tonight on Nitro. How long has this been planned? And what is the status of Goldberg?

Also on Nitro: Eddie Guerrero will defend his United States Title against Heavy Metal and Booker T will take on Meng.

Join us for the first Nitro out of the United States in history. Join us when WCW Monday Nitro invades the famous SkyDome in Toronto, Canada, TONIGHT LIVE 8pm eastern / 5pm pacific and only on TNT.

Announced Matches:

WCW World Heavyweight Champion Sting & Bret Hart vs The Outsiders

Booker T vs Meng

WCW United States Title Match: Heavy Metal vs WCW United States Champion Eddie Guerrero

WCW Monday Nitro - Episode 132
Monday Week 1, April 1998 - SkyDome- Toronto, Canada

[Nitro opens to the closing moments of Saturday Night's Uncensored main event that sees Kevin Nash drop Sting with the Jackhammer through a table for the victory. The video then shows the celebration and then cuts to a live shot of the SkyDome from outside the building as fans are finishing coming inside. A special Nitro logo, with the Canadian Flag, is shown as Nitro goes to its opening video sequence. And then inside as the SkyDome is lit on fire by an amazing pyro show as Monday Nitro is on the air!

Before the announcers can intro the show....

The Wolfpac come out and theyre all waving Canadian flags in a mocking salute. They are all on cloud nine. Syxxx starts off talking about how its been a tumultuous few months for the nWo, had some reorganizing to do, but Saturday night everything got righted again when we smoked WCW's heroes. Scott Hall does a survey about who came to see WCW or the nWo and claims victory and then give the mic over to his best friend and the man that won the nWo the title shot, Big Sexy Kevin Nash.

Nash goes to speak but before he can do, Curt Hennig is on his way down the aisle. He gets into the ring and congratulates the boys and acts like he was part of it all along. Nash asks him what is he doing. Curt says, hes joining the party with his buddies. Eric looks at him and says "where have you been for the last few months?" Hennig looks confused and Nash lays it out telling Curt that when you're nWo, you're nWo for life but that is something that Curt apparently forgot. For the last 3 months, Curt has wanted to stand on his own...and what did that get ya? A lost title, a title rematch lost and a career spiraling down. Now, you want to celebrate? No.

The nWo guys tell Curt to leave the ring. He protests but he is threatened by Hall and finally leaves. Nash turns back to the matter at hand and thats celebrating their victory. Now, WCW has decided that they think they have power and can order us around tonight and put The Outsiders in a match? No.

WCW doesnt push the nWo around and they sure as hell don't order the Wolfpac. Bischoff grabs the mic and says "in case you don't understand what we're saying WCW.....bite me. There will be no match cause we got to partayyy. Have a good night Toronto, we love ya".

The nWo celebrate and head to the back. It appears the main event is off. As Nitro goes to break. ]

[Tony and the announcers welcome us back and put over the question of whether or not the main event of Sting & Bret vs The Outsiders will now happen. They then take us back to Saturday where we see Goldberg defeat Raven and Heenan comes out to celebrate only for it to be a set up as The Giant returns and decimates Goldberg. We are told that Goldberg suffered internal injuries to his throat from the choking by the Giant, was taken to a New York City hospital and will be released tomorrow morning. His return to WCW is in question at this time.]

Match #1: Blitzkrieg vs The Giant w/Bobby Heenan

[Following the match Heenan grabs a microphone. He says that he told the world that he would have his man, and here he is. "Two and a half years ago, this man entered WCW and became the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in the history of this sport. I saw in that debut a monster and also the continuation of a legacy. A legacy that I helped start in 1987 that sold out the Pontiac Silverdome. But this Giant became directionless and, I feared, hopeless.

Meanwhile someone has emerged from obscurity to take the world by storm. Not since Hulk Hogan exploded onto the national scene has professional wrestling seen anything like Bill Goldberg. His ability to connect with you humanoids is uncanny and I know how this story ends. Like Hogan before him, Goldberg will take over this whole damned industry and that simply will not work. So someone has to stop him.

And thats where The Giant came in. I went to him after Starrcade and told him that I can provide him direction. I can provide him money. I can give him goals. I can give him hope and together, we will win titles, we will become rich, we will destroy everything in our path because we will take over professional wrestling. And it all starts with you, Goldberg. You big dumb idiot, you're not taking over this place...we are. And there's nothing you can do to stop it."

Heenan and the Giant laugh and leave the ring as Nitro goes to commercial with a graphic promoting the US title is on the line - Eddie Guerrero defends against Heavy Metal LIVE - Next.]

[Nitro returns and Mean Gene is at the Nitro set and welcomes to Toronto the Chairman of the WCW Executive Committee, James J Dillon. Dillon comes out and says that he has an important announcement for tonight's hour #2 but before we get to that, he needs to address what just happened.

Now, JJ understands the anger and the feelings involved given what Shane Douglas has done to Ric Flair - who is also a friend to JJ - as well as what hes done to Chris Benoit. But, that level of attack is not appropriate and won't be tolerated. So this feud must end and it must be settled and settled it will be at Spring Stampede. Because at that event, it will be Chris Benoit vs Shane Douglas inside a Steel Cage. And to make sure Douglas cant run away, the cage will have a roof on top. But, until that night, Shane Douglas and Chris Benoit are ordered to not touch each other. If either one of them fail to adhere to that warning, the one that breaks it will be fired from WCW.

Now, onto tonight. Earlier tonight we saw Eric Bischoff say bite m...Bischoff comes out interrupting JJ and says that since JJ used his name, he'd come out and look JJ directly in the face and say....bite me. JJ merely laughs and says Bischoff won't be saying that in a moment. Because the announced main event of The Outsiders against Bret Hart and WCW Champion, Sting, will happen. Bischoff again says bite me and says it won't. JJ says it will and here's why.....(Bischoff reads a legal document that is handed to him by JJ. Bischoff's face goes white and then red with anger as JJ tells us what it says):

Scott Hall and Kevin Nash are contractually obligated to fight here tonight. And if they fail to do so, WCW will use exercise the penalty clause in their contracts. And WCW will immediately suspend and bar Scott Hall and Kevin Nash from competing in any WCW sanctioned event for a period of 1 year.

Bischoff is ballistic and screams they cant do this and JJ says they can and they will. And then asks, if the Outsiders are gone, how will the nWo regain the WCW title? Bischoff is fuming but he has no choice...he says yes the match is on.

As he goes to walk away, JJ says "one last thing, Eric. From all of us here in WCW.....bite me." JJ shoves past a stunned Eric as the crowd roars and Nitro goes to break with our main event back on.]

This brings out The Nasty Boys who demand to know who in the hell do these punk kids think that they are? The Nasty Boys are veterans, have been champions in every major promotion in the world, including WCW. And now that theyre back its time to make WCW nastified once again.

This brings out The Empire who says neither team has proven their worth as far as they are concerned. Eventually pushing and shoving happens and soon all three teams are brawling as Mean Gene runs for his life. Jeff Hardy is launched into the WCW sign by The Empire and there is chaos before officials finally break this all up but it is clear that the tag team division is heating up.]

We see a still image recap of the big moments of last night’s WrestleMania XIV, including a Sable Bomb. The Nation turning on the Rock, Kane and Paul Bearer being buried by the Undertaker, and Owen Hart winning the WWF Championship after some interaction between Vince McMahon and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Grade: 100

APRIL WEEK 1-----BOSTON GARDEN----BOSTON, MA-----15,000 IN ATTENDANCE (SELL OUT)

When the show begins, WWF Owner Vince McMahon is already in the ring. He’s flanked by four police officers and wearing a neckbrace. He says that last night he was assaulted and nearly paralyzed by Stone Cold Steve Austin for no reason whatsoever and tonight if Austin lays one finger on him, Austin will be spending the night in jail.

Now, with that said, tonight he is also here to announce the brand new WWF Commissioner. And after last night he’s finally got something to smile about. Ladies and Gentlemen, the new Commissioner of the World Wrestling Federation……...Shane McMahon!

Vince’s son comes down to the ring and shakes hands with his father when a hug is too much physicality for the owner, but before the younger McMahon can address the crowd……..

Austin comes down to the ring and everyone’s on edge. Austin gets in and does his four corners walk before saying that all of this with the cops is completely unnecessary. All Vince had to do was come to him man to man and they could settle this. But Austin questions what would happen if he touched him tonight. Vince meekly repeats he’d be arrested. Austin asks him to speak up. McMahon repeats himself. Austin says he’s a little deaf, and gets in close to Vince which tenses the cops. He says he needs him to say it one more time. Vince raises his voice and says that Austin will be spending the night in jail. Austin nods but says that Vince needs to remember that he just beat the baddest man on the planet last night and he don’t fear no man in that jail, in this ring or on this planet.

Shane tries to interject but Austin points at him and tells him to shut up. Austin turns his eyes back to Vince and says that if he’s going to go to jail, guaran-damn-teed, he’ll be out of jail before Vince gets out of the hospital and he suddenly kicks Vince in the gut and drops him with a stunner as the crowd explodes. The cops are all over Austin and get him handcuffed as he’s down on his chest talking trash to Vince who is being checked on by Shane. The cops drag Austin out of the ring and up the ramp as he says he’s not done with the McMahons yet.

Grade: 100

When we come back from the commercial break we see a replay of Stone Cold Steve Austin getting arrested after attacking Vince McMahon who had just name his son Shane as the new Commissioner.

Grade: 77

Jim Cornette and the Blackjacks are in the ring and Cornette lays the blame for last night’s loss to the ECW faction directly at the feet of Tommy Rich. He goes onto say that we’ll never see Rich again because he’s a loser and Cornette only associates with winners!

Grade: 57

Quote:

The Blackjacks are able to use their strength and size to their advantage against Flash Funk and it works for awhile but when he makes the tag to Henry that goes out the window. Henry shows incredible strength tossing each of the Blackjacks around like they’re a hundred pounds less. A series of running splashes in the corners to each of them leaves Windham rolling out of the ring and Bradshaw face down. Flash gets the tag back in and goes to the top hitting a 450 splash onto Bradshaw’s back before rolling him over for the pin.

Winners by Pinfall: Mark Henry and Flash Funk:
Grade: 63

After the match Cornette is berating the Blackjacks following their loss and he swings his racket at Windham who catches it. Cornette looks scared and apologetic but a moment later Bradshaw floors Cornette with a powerful lariat and they both leave, him in the ring.

Grade: 62

JR and the King announce a big match for RAW’s trip to the UK next week. Lawler
comments that Jarrett may win by forfeit if Austin is still in jail!

Grade: 80

Quote:

DeMott is on his heels from the opening bell as Landry goes to work on him with a series of kicks and strikes and once he’s got his opponent staggered Landry hits a running kneelift in the corner, then another. DeMott is barely on his feet as Landry bounds off the ropes and hits a slingblade clothesline. Feeling the energy of the crowd cheering him on, Landry goes to the top and nails DeMott with a missile dropkick before signaling that its time to end the match. He picks DeMott up on his shoulders before shoving him over his head and with Demott on his way to that mat, Landry’s knee connects against his temple. JR comments that Landry just put Demott to sleep as the referee counts to three.
Winner by Pinfall: Simon Landry:
Grade: 62

Backstage, the cameras catch sight of the Awakening manhandling the Patriot. They bounce him off the metal garage door before they deliver a double chokeslam through a table. Medical staff and officials rush to help him as the Awakening and Ravishing Rick Rude just laugh and go along their way.

Grade: 41

[i]We go to a vignette where Goldust and Marlena are sitting in their director chairs. Goldust says that WrestleMania was worthy of an Academy Award with of course himself as Best Actor for his portrayal as an injured hero overcoming his arch nemesis. But he wants to make sure that Ahmed, as he rests in his hospital bed, can understand the number one rule of Hollywood. If there’s money to be made there’s always room for a sequel. In four weeks at Unforgiven perhaps that sequel can be shot if Ahmed has a shred of pride and accepts the challenge and if he does the world will see the global premiere of Goldust’s next project….The Destruction of the Pearl River Punk.

Grade: 64

DX comes down to the ring and if Michaels looks intense as we’ve seen him in a long time, Triple H looks as smug. Michaels says that every great general at some point has lost a battle. And what makes them great is that they regroup, they strategize, they come back better the next time. Owen Hart can have his little celebration and he can enjoy his fifteen minutes in the spotlight because tonight there are two things the world needs to know. The first is that at Unforgiven in four weeks, Michaels is invoking his rematch clause. And the second, is that when that match happens DX will be stronger, larger, and better than ever because tonight is the beginning of the DX Army.

He throws the mic in disgust as Triple H who still is smirking and Chyna follow him out.

Grade: 96

Quote:

Mero appears terrified during the Undertaker’s entrance and with good reason. As soon as the bell ring he tries to box the Deadman but instantly regrets that decision when the Undertaker blocks Mero’s initial punches then retaliates with big rights and lefts backing Mero into the corner. Mero is whipped to the other corner and the Undertaker follows with a running big boot. Mero is slumped in the corner but the Undertaker shows no mercy, dragging him to the middle of the ring before reaching down and grabbing him by the throat. The Undertaker yanks Mero up to his feet by his throat before lifting him again and delivering a big chokeslam. Drawing his thumb across his throat, the Undertaker excites the crowd to their feet as he scoops up Mero and delivers a Tombstone in the middle of the ring for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: The Undertaker
Grade: 78

As the Undertaker kneels in a purple light celebrating his victory, he’s suddenly blasted from behind by Vader. The Mastodon rains right hands down on him, before hitting a belly to belly suplex. The Undertaker begins to sit up but Vader flattens him with a splash. Undertaker tries to sit up again, obviously hurting, but Vader drops a series of elbows, then drags him to the corner and hits a Vader Bomb. This time the Undertaker doesn’t sit up and Vader plays to the crowd before leaving the ring. When he’s up at the top of the ramp the lights suddenly go out and the gong sounds. When the lights come back on, the Undertaker is gone from the ring and now Vader appears a little less confident than he did moments before.

Grade: 84

JR and the King remind us that coming up later tonight will be a celebration for the new WWF Champion, Owen Hart.

Grade: 76

Sable is backstage signing some autographs when Sunny comes barging up to her, demanding to know just who in the hell Sable thinks she is. Sable is taken aback momentarily but then collects herself and says she’s the woman whose taken Sunny’s place in the hearts, minds, and fantasies of men all over the world. Sunny slaps Sable across the face and they begin fighting. Officials come in and pull them apart but its clear they’re not done with each other.

Grade: 68

Quote:

The Sandman comes down through the crowd with his usual entrance, busting himself open with a beer can on the way. When he gets in the ring, still holding a singapore cane, Holly is in his face, trying to apparently intimidate Sandman. The bell hasn’t rung yet as the referee is asking Sandman to give up the cane. Finally he’s had enough and Sandman whacks Holly with the cane right over the head. He then throws it to the outside and the bell rings. Holly staggers around in a circle and when he comes around again Sandman hits a piledriver for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: The Sandman
Grade: 53

We get a recap of how the Nation of Domination turned on the Rock following his loss to Mankind for the WWF European Championship and how Mankind came to help him, thus cementing perhaps a new mutual respect between the two.

Grade: 75

Quote:

The months of animosity and building tensions between these two are still evident and fresh from the opening bell through the match. A very physical and hard hitting match, which sees Faarooq control most of the match but the Rock keeps fighting, including a remarkable spot where the Rock delivers a Samoan Drop off the second rope which gets a very close two count. Now the Rock is feeling it and when Faarooq staggers to his feet the Rock drives him right back down with a Rock Bottom before kicking up to his feet. The crows is buzzing as the Rock stands over Faarooq and kicks his former mentor’s arm into his body before he takes off his elbow pad. The Rock bounds to one rope, then to the other jumping over the fallen Nation leader but when he closes in he’s met by a big clothesline from Kama. D’Lo is right behind him and the referee calls for the bell as the beatdown commences.

Winner by Disqualification: The Rock
Grade: 80

The bell continues to ring as Kama and D’Lo along with Faarooq triple team the Rock and as much as tries he can’t overcome those numbers. Faarooq tells them to get him to his feet so he can deliver a Dominator when the crowd begins to cheer.

Flash Funk and Mark Henry come running down to the ring and they quickly clear it. As Flash Funk helps the Rock to his feet, Henry stands guard, and the Nation clearly wants no part of him tonight.
Grade: 67

The new WWF Champion Owen Hart comes down to the ring and gets on the mic. He says last night he set things right, and brought the belt back home to where it belongs. He wants to be a champion people can admire, someone parents don't have to explain to their kids. He goes on to say that he knows that he's now the hunted but that doesn't bother him at all and speaking of hunted, earlier, Shawn Michaels mentioned a rematch in four weeks at Unforgiven......

DX comes down the ramp but they stop at the bottom. Michaels says he wants Hart to enjoy the fact he's the luckiest man on the face of the earth. Last night HBK made a momentary mistake, a lapse of concentration, and he paid for it. But in four weeks at Unforgiven he won't make that mistake again.

Owen replies that it won't change the outcome. At Unforgiven, Michaels will tap out again and the title will stay right where it is.

DX begin to grin, then laugh out loud. Hart quickly grows annoyed and asks what's so funny. Michaels shrugs before slowly walking up the stairs. Before he steps through the ropes he tells Owen that the funny thing is, and he didn't think this was possible, Owen is even stupider than his brother. Owen charges Michaels but he jumps down to the floor. But from behind Owen, two young men enter the ring

When Owen gets the sense that someone is behind him he looks behind him and is almost turned inside out with a spear. Down, and clutching his ribs, the champion is easy target as all the members of DX get in and begin attacking. The two newcomers pick Hart up before Triple H kicks him in the stomach and delivers a Pedigree. But they're not done. Michaels climbs to the top and after they rolls Owen onto his back HBK flies off with a big elbow driven right into the chest of Hart. Each of the four men climb the turnbuckles flashing the X sign as Chyna looms over the fallen champion as the show goes off the air.

I'm a bit behind, but that was a heck of a Mania! Excited to see where Tyson goes from here once he's out of development.

Also, E&C are here! Nice way to reboot DX.

April 1998 Week 1

Nitro: 20.93 (15,873,177 viewers)

Raw: 20.50 (15,143,207 viewers)

*WCW felt their first Nitro in Canada was a work in progress. The company is aware that it will take time to grow their international expansion and it will be one of the biggest focus of the company for the rest of 1998 and into 1999. There is talk of a Canadian only pay per view for 1999 but that is not anywhere near any action stage.

*Hollywood Hulk Hogan quietly signed a new deal with WCW after a meeting with Eric Bischoff in Los Angeles a week ago. We are told that the storyline for Hogan's eventual return to television was locked in. Expect Hogan back on tv by Bash at the Beach in July.

*WCW is considering scaling back pay per views to maybe 10 a year instead of 12 with the feeling that some shows need longer time for proper build.

*Some in WCW are wondering if ECW will be able to hold on for another year. The company is not a major draw and with the WWF and, to a lesser extent WCW, raiding their marquee talent, its being speculated that Heyman's company won't be able to hang on. Some inside WCW believe that the company would seek to acquire ECW if they go bankrupt.

*WCW and TBS decided to end the weekly airing of WCW World Wide which will make it the first time that the show has not aired in some form since the Jim Crockett era. The reasoning behind it is that the company will be running more special house shows usually on Sunday's and they don't need the relative little income that they were receiving from TBS for the show. There are no plans to phase out WCW Saturday Night however.

*Jacquelyn and Terry Taylor each signed new deals with the company. Jacquelyn is expected to return to television sometime this year.

*The WWF is celebrating what is being considered the most successful WrestleMania in history. There is a lot of excitement surrounding the new storylines and vision for the product for the remainder of the year with several long term storylines in the works.

*To the surprise of few the WWF came to terms with Scott Steiner. However there is no word about when he’ll debut.

*The naming of Shane McMahon as the new WWF Commissioner has been in the works for awhile with the younger McMahon wanting to begin an on-camera role. It wouldn’t be a bad bet to think the storyline with the McMahons and Steve Austin to continue for awhile.

*It may or may not be noteworthy that the WWF left Kane and Paul Bearer off their monthly listed roster. There are still rumors that Kane’s performer will be repackaged down the line.

*Look for another debut this week on RAW.

*There is a lot of buzz about WWF making a major announcement towards the end of the month. We’re currently picking through reports that WWF has been in the midst of a massive hiring spree to bolster the roster though it may be unrelated to the announcement.

Mair Hall----Poughkeepsie, NY-----3,050 in attendance

Michael Cole and Jerry the King Lawler welcome us to the show and run down the matches for the night, giving heavy attention to the main event of Vader versus Steve Blackman.

Grade: 55

We’re taken to a pre-taped promo with Ravishing Rick Rude standing in front of the Awakening. He says that on Monday they sent a message but he’s not sure if it got through. So this Monday, in London, they’ll send another one...loud and clear.

Grade: 76

Quote:
The Awakening vs Adam Pearce and Ace Steele

These two young men who were given the opportunity to be on national television pay dearly for their mistake as Awesome and Clarke decimate them from start to finish without them even getting in so much as a punch. On the plus side they do a good job of selling the beatdown but finally it’s put to an end when the Awakening hit their powerbomb neckbreaker for the win.

Winners by Pinfall: The Awakening
Grade: 41

A replay of the ‘new’ DX’s attack on WWF Champion Owen Hart is shown.

Grade: 84

Quote:
Ahmed Johnson vs Terry Gordy

A battle of two big men, but by and large it’s Johnson who’s in control. He’s no longer sporting the eye patch from the injury suffered at the hands of Goldust. Gordy hangs in there but he’s no match for Johnson who finishes him off with a shoulder tackle from the second rope.

Winner by Pinfall: Ahmed Johnson
Grade: 67

Following his victory, Johnson is about to leave the ring when Goldust appears on the Titantron. Goldust says that he’s looking forward to seeing Ahmed in London where he can sign the contract to star in Pearl River Punk. But Goldust understands if Ahmed isn’t a real man and refuses to fight him because not everyone can be as manly as he is. Johnson is clearly infuriated and storms to the back. Cole suggests that Goldust may get more than he bargained for in London this Monday.

Grade: 90

A video replay of Vader’s attack on the Undertaker from last Monday is shown.

Grade: 89

Quote:
Vader vs Steve Blackman

Blackman begins the match on fire with a series of strikes that keeps Vader on his heels but its not long before the masked man takes over when he flattens Blackman with a splash in the corner. From there it’s just Vader hitting some power moves and punishing Blackman before the Vaderbomb for the victory.

Winner by Pinfall: Vader
Grade: 76

To close the show the announcers hype the pre-announced match this Monday which will see Stone Cold Steve Austin go one on one with Jeff Jarrett when RAW visits the UK

Grade: 82

Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler open the show and run down the known matches for tonight especially highlighting the Rock versus Billy Gunn

Grade: 82

We see a replay of Vince McMahon naming his son Shane as the new WWF Commissioner and then Stone Cold Steve Austin crashing the party from this past Monday night.

Grade: 74

Quote:
Nick Dinsmore and Rob Conway vs The Headbangers

In an even match, both teams get their time on offense but towards the end Mosh goes for an ill-advised cross body block off the top which allows Dinsmore to tag in. He goes on the attack, hitting a series of suplexes finally finishing him off with a bridged German suplex as Conway ensured Thrasher couldn’t break up the count.

Winners by Pinfall: Nick Dinsmore and Rob Conway]
Grade: 57

A video package is shown highlighting Vader’s attack on the Undertaker and then the mysterious disappearance of the Deadman.

Grade: 87

Cole tells us that this Monday night, Dude Love will be on hand to hold an open challenge for the WWE European Championship.

Grade: 79

Quote:
Mark Henry vs Bull Buchannan

Former Truth Commission member Recon was seen here under a new name of Bull Buchannan. In the end a name change didn’t matter much as Mark Henry dominated the short match which ended when he slapped on the side headlock and Buchannan went night-night.

Winner by Submission: Mark Henry
Grade: 44

Lawler excitedly informs us that this Monday night on RAW, DX will there and they have a big announcement!

Grade: 88

We now see a vignette of the new WWF Tag Team Champions, the Godwinns as they spent the last week in their home town celebrating their victory with the locals. Lawler comments that if you add up all the IQs in that town you average lower than the speed limit.

Grade: 54

Quote:
The Rock vs Billy Gunn

These two really went at it, with Cole reminding the audience that Gunn’s partner the Road Dogg suffered an arm injury at WrestleMania. While Gunn controlled the early minutes the Rock tunned it on in the second half hitting a series of clotheslines and a spinebuster which got a two count. The Rock waited patiently and when Gunn got up he turned around right into a Rock Bottom that got the 1-2-3.

Winner by Pinfall: The Rock
Grade: 80

Following the match the Rock gets on the mic and says that a week ago he learned what freedom really means and now from the outside looking in, he can see the Nation of Domination is nothing but a bunch of candyasses hiding behind tough talk so he’s got a little challenge for them. At Unforgiven, a little six man tag and to show them what a gentleman he is, the Rock is going to send a written challenge via carrier pigeon all the way to London so that Faarooq can get it, then he can pass it off to D’Lo Brown because his dumbass can’t read, and then D’Lo can take that bird, pet it real nice on the top of it’s head, turn that sum’bitch sideways and shove it straight up his candyass right next to the gerbil he got for christmas if you smell what the Rock is cooking!

Episode #133 - "Miami Heat"

With less than 2 weeks until Spring Stampede, professional wrestling's #1 program rolls into Miami.

Last week on Nitro, a blinded Bret Hart accidentally hit Sting in the face with a steel chair knocking the champion out and allowing The Outsiders a win. WCW.com has learned that Bret Hart has tried to communicate with Sting all week but to no avail. Our spies tell us that the Hitman will call Sting out on Nitro to right their differences. Speaking of Bret, he will be in our main event when he takes on Syxxx of the Wolfpac in one - on - one action. How will Sting respond? Will the Wolfpac sew even more differences into the union of the Champ and the Hitman?

Last week on Nitro, the steel cage match between Shane Douglas and Chris Benoit was set for Spring Stampede as was an order that the two could not touch. Given the set up that Dean Malenko and Benoit orchestrated for Douglas, Shane has asked for a rematch with Dean Malenko live on Nitro. Will Benoit be able to keep his hands off the Franchise when Douglas takes on the Crippler's best friend?

The Giant has returned to WCW and has done so in a devastating fashion targeting Goldberg. We have not seen or heard from "Da Man" since Uncensored. This week on Nitro we are hoping to receive an update on the condition of Goldberg. The Giant will be in action as well.

At Spring Stampede Booker T will take on the Dog Faced Gremlin, Rick Steiner, as part of his goal to settle the beef that remains between them. But they will have to figure out a way to work together as WCW Executive Committee Chairman, JJ Dillon, has booked Booker T and Rick in a tag team match. Their opponents? The new WCW World Tag Team Champions, The Empire. Can these two enemies win gold?

Last week on Nitro, Konnan attacked Eddie Guerrero and laid him out. Was the US title the reason that Konnan targeted Eddie or is there something deeper. Konnan will be on hand to address his actions.

Nitro is LIVE from the Miami Arena this Monday. Don't miss the explosion only on TNT.

Announced Matches:

Bret Hart vs Syxxx

WCW World Tag Team Titles: Booker T & Rick Steiner vs The Empire

Shane Douglas vs Dean Malenko

The Giant in action

WCW Monday Nitro - Episode 133
Monday Week 2, April 1998 - Miami Arena - Miami, Florida

[Nitro opens with footage from last week... Syxxx blinding Bret, Bret accidentally nailing Sting with a chair, both Bret and Sting out cold as the nWo celebrates before cutting into a live shot of the Miami Arena parking lot. We see DDP and Chris Jericho meet a limo that has arrived. The door opens and its Bret Hart who has arrived. Hart asks "is he here?" And Page says "we don't know". Hart shakes his head in frustration and Jericho slaps an arm over his shoulders as the three walk into the arena.]

Grade: 77

============================

[Nitro's usual intro airs and then a live shot of the Miami Arena is shown as pro wrestling's #1 program comes on the air. But instead of the pyro we immediately get:

Bret Hart comes right out to the ring after arriving in the building. He is flanked by Page and Jericho and they are scanning the rafters as they enter the ring.

Bret says he needs to clear up what happened last week right here and right now. For seven days he has tried to reach out to Sting to clear the air but it's hard to reach a mute and a man that hangs in the rafters. "So Sting, if you're up there...please come down."

Page, Jericho and Hart look to the ceiling but no Sting. Page takes the mic and calls for Stinger to please come down so that they can fix this but to no avail. Jericho takes the mic and says that it was "soooo brave" of the nWo to attack Sting and Bret last week knowing that Page and Jericho were in Japan promoting the WCW Japan SuperShow. "But, guess what ass clowns, we're here now. And we'll be in this ring in 13 days at Spring Stampede ready to fight."

Page says "thats right, because the WCW Executive Committee has given us a chance to kick some ass. So at Spring Stampede it will be DDP and Chris Jericho against...The Outsiders." The crowd cheers at that and Bret takes the mic back.

He says that though they can't see him up there, Bret can feel in his bones that Sting is in this building tonight. And later on in the show, Bret is gonna walk back out here like a man and ask one more time for Sting to come out and listen to Bret. Sting has a choice to make tonight...he can hide in the shadows or he can be a man and shake Bret's hand.

"The choice is yours, Stinger. I'll see you later tonight."

Bret, Page and Jericho walk to the back as Nitro goes to its first commercial break.]

******COMMERCIAL BREAK*******
============================

[Nitro returns from commercial with a video of a man in darkness in an alley. We can see rats and sewage on the ground. He walks around before landing against a wall and sliding down to the ground. We can hear Raven speak without seeing his mouth: "Embarrassed. Humiliated. Destroyed. These words are nothing to me. I've experienced this darkness my whole life. And I failed at bringing the soul of Goldberg to the light. It's time to refocus my energy. Its time to find my way. The Flock is disbanded. I'm off to find the light. Quote the Raven, Nevermore." Raven gets up and we see him take his leather jacket off. He walks down the alley and turns the corner into the night.]

Match #1: Doug Gilbert vs The Giant w/Bobby Heenan

[The announcers take us back to last week on Nitro. We see Konnan's brutal attack on Eddie Guerrero and we are told that at Spring Stampede Eddie will defend his US title against Konnan. [Nitro returns and Mean Gene is at the Nitro set and welcomes his guest at this time...Konnan. Konnan comes out to a chorus of boos and before Gene can even ask what last week was all about, Konnan launches a tirade against Eddie. He brings up their history in AAA. He brings up how it was Konnan that brought Eddie to America in that bingo hall in Philly. It was Konnan that brought Eddie to WCW. It was Konnan looking out for him and what did Eddie Guerrero do when he started making it big? He forgot who made it all possible for him. Well, that's disrespect. And in Mexico, holmes, when you disrespect a man you get sliced up and left for dead. And Eddie has disrespected Konnan for far too long. At Spring Stampede K-Dawg is coming for Eddie's heart, K-Dawg is coming for Eddie's title and K-Dawg is coming for Eddies life. Viva la raza.]

[Nitro returns and Mean Gene is at the Nitro set once more. He tells us that WCW had hoped to have Goldberg here tonight to update us on his condition. But, unfortunately, that was unable to happen. [Following the win the announcers tell us that next week on Nitro it will be a four way match between Rey Mysterio, Jushin Liger, Super Crazy and Psychosis and the winner will challenge Guido for the Cruiserweight title at Spring Stampede.]

============================

[We look at the history between Booker T & The Steiners. We are reminded that the lesser Steiner is gone but at Spring Stampede Booker will look to end this rivalry by defeating the older, Rick. The animosity has to be put aside though because Booker T & Rick Steiner will team up to challenge The Empire for the WCW World Tag Team Titles. That match is sure to be explosive and its NEXT only on Nitro.]

[Bret's music plays as the Hitman comes back out to the ring. He has a mic as he scans the ceiling once more and still no Sting. Bret says that what happened last week was a mistake. He was blinded by whatever it was that Syxxx sprayed in his eyes and he did not know who it was that touched him so he fought back. He is sor....

Bret scans the area ready for a fight when the crowd comes alive and we see what they're looking at and its Kevin Nash in the crowd. He has a mic and says "You were about to say that you're sorry but, are you really Bret? You see, Bret, I've known you a really long time and I know who you are. And Sting...if you're up there somewhere...you should know who he is too."

Bret tells him to shut his mouth but Nash continues "you see Sting, I am an honest man. If I want to take you out, I will shoot you between your eyes. But, not Bret. Oh, no, Bret will use you. He will be your best friend all the while looking for the spot to stick the shiv in. I've seen him down it for years so the question is, Stinger, can you really trust that what happened last week was an accident?"

Bret, furiously responds, "you of all people want to question MY loyalty and integrity? I came here to stop you from doing what you and your husband did up north and you question me, Nash? If you have any doubts about where I stand, how about you come down here right now and I'll prove it."

Nash tells him thats a great idea and Nash makes his way down the crowd. While this is happening, Hall and Syxxx sneak out from under the ring and blast Bret from behind. Its a 3 on 1 attack as Page and Jericho run down as a mele ensues. The Wolfpac gain the advantage and the crowd screams as suddenly...

Sting drops from the ceiling. He starts to unhook himself and prepares to fight when he sees the nWo in the ring and Hart all focused on him wondering what he will do. An expression of doubt crosses Sting's face as its clear he doesn't know who to trust.

We’re shown a video recapping last week’s events specifically highlighting Austin’s interruption of Vince McMahon’s announcement and the attack on WWF Champion Owen Hart by the newly expanded D-Generation X.

Grade: 92

1998 APRIL WEEK 2-----WEMBLEY ARENA----LONDON, UK-----9,698 IN ATTENDANCE

D-Generation X comes down to the ring and they’re all smiles. Triple H gets on the mic first and says that nobody can claim that DX didn’t warn them. They said they were going to build an army and that is exactly what they did. But when you build an army you look to those you can put your complete faith in, you look to your blood. That’s why he reached out to his blood. He goes on to introduce Adam and Christian Helmsley, his cousins whom he grew up with. He hands the mic off to Michaels who goes on to say that last week was the formation of the army, this week is the beginning of the war.

Grade: 72

Backstage, Commissioner Shane McMahon is surrounded by his father’s entourage. He tells them that he’s decided after seeing that display tonight’s main event here in London is going to be WWF Champion Owen Hart and the WWF Team Champions the Godwinns against Triple H and his trust fund cousins in a six man tag. They congratulate him for such a great decision until he says the next thing he wants them to do is find Stone Cold Steve Austin because he wants to talk to him. They try and persuade him that this is a bad idea but Shane just asks them to do as he said. They leave, grumbling as Shane looks confidant.

Grade: 66

Dude Love comes out to the ring and says that since they’re right here….in London, England….he thought it was only fair to put his European Championship on the line. So if anyone would like to challenge the champ, come out here daddy-o, and let’s get funky!

A few moments later we see a newcomer walk down the ramp before getting in the ring and offering a smile and a handshake to Dude Love. JR says this is a local talent by the name of William Regal.

Grade: 74

Quote:

It’s the champion who controls the early moments until Regal ducks a clothesline and sticks him with a stiff right hand. From there Regal begins working Dude over with a series of wear down moves, specifically aimed at his shoulder. Feeding off the crowd, Dude begins fighting back. During his comeback, Terry Funk comes down to the ring, yelling at Dude Love and calling him Cactus, questioning what he’s doing, why he’s dressed like that. Dude is clearly distracted but it doesn’t stop him from taking control and flooring Regal with a couple of running clotheslines and even a dropkick. Once he’s back on his feet he begins dancing which draws the ire of Funk who climbs onto the apron and again begins berating him. This time Dude comes over to Funk and in a hushed tone, very out of character, asks Funk what his problem is. The referee by now has come over and in the corner, Regal reaches into his trunks. Dude shakes his head, leaving Funk on the apron and turns back to Regal when he’s clocked right between the eyes, knocking him out cold. Regal makes the cover after quickly putting whatever it is he was holding back in his trunks and the referee counts to three as a disgusted Funk, gets off the apron and walks back up the ramp.

Winner by Pinfall and new WWF European Champion: William Regal
Grade: 70

We see a replay from a few moments ago when Terry Funk cost Dude Love the WWF European Championship

Grade: 56

Backstage, Ahmed Johnson is walking along when Marlena steps into his path. She just stands there smoking her cigar before slapping him across the face. Johnson uses an incredible amount of restraint but a moment later you hear fast footsteps. Johnson seems to anticipate this, and turns around, catching Goldust a moment before he attacks from behind, before swirling around and putting the Bizzare One through a table with a spinebuster. Marlena is shocked and Johnson simply takes the cigar from her mouth, and walks off with a grin.

Grade: 50

Shane McMahon is in his office when Stone Cold Steve Austin enters. Shane immediately puts his hands up and says he wants to clear the air with Austin. He doesn’t do business like his father. He understands why Austin did what he did, even if it hurt him to see his father injured like that. But the bottom line, as Austin likes to say, is that Shane wants to create an atmosphere of opportunity and that starts tonight. If Austin can beat Jeff Jarrett tonight, he’ll get an Intercontinental rematch against Triple H at Unforgiven. Austin considers it and Shane sticks out his hand. Austin just looks at it, smirks a little and walks out. When the door closes Shane lets out an exhale and sits down, but with a smile.

Grade: 75

Backstage we see Dude Love searching every room he comes across, screaming for Terry Funk. He comes across a staffer who tells him he saw Funk leave the arena. He shoves the staffer aside and continues searching while the blood trickles down his face.

Grade: 85

Quote:

D’lo controls the match in the beginning using some cheap shots and doing a lot of talking to the crowd, but once Flash Funk begins moving and gets his offense in gear he’s buzzing around and D’lo is playing catch up. Whether it's bouncing off the ropes or taking to the top and hitting some high flying moves, D’lo is bumping like crazy and Flash has the crowd into it. Flash goes up to the second rope and flies off with a leg drop but D’lo moves and Flash crashes down to the mat. D’Lo makes a quick cover and puts his feet up on the ropes unseen by the referee for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: D’lo Brown
Grade: 53

Backstage Marc Mero is by himself and looking a little depressed. The camera is zoomed in on him but he slowly looks up at someone and when the camera pulls back we see it’s Sunny. She asks him where the Marvelous One is. He doesn’t really have an answer and she slaps him. That wakes him up and he gets to his feet. Sunny smiles and caresses the cheek she just slapped and simply says let’s go get that bitch.

Grade: 69

Quote:

The arena nearly explodes when the sound of breaking glass rings out and Austin wastes no time, sprinting down to the ring and immediately beginning to brawl with Jarrett. Stone Cold is all over Jarrett, even giving Cornette a right hand to knock him off the apron. The momentary distraction gives Jarrett an opening and he stops Austin cold with a hard shot to the kidney. Jarrett continues to wear at Austin’s lower back for the next few minutes but the tide turns when Austin ducks a clothesline then rebounds off the ropes with a Thesz Press, raining right hands down on Jarrett. Austin hits a precision elbow off the second rope, before going in for a snap suplex. Cornette is back on the apron and Austin has a hold of his jacket when Jarrett charges but Austin moves at the last second and Jarrett collides with Cornette. Jarrett staggers around and walks into a boot to the gut followed by a Stunner. Stone Cold will get his rematch at Unforgiven!

Winner by Pinfall: Stone Cold Steve Austin
Grade: 89

Backstage the camera catches a chaotic scene as the Awakening are in process of decimating a few of the lightweight wrestlers. Great Sasuke and Billy Smalls are already laying in a heap as Taka Michinoku is thrown into a locked, Funaki is knocked unconscious with a devastating boot to the temple, before El Dandy is double chokeslammed through a table. Rude straightens his tie and motions for his men to follow him out. The camera catches the scene of destruction as JR decries the anarchy.

Grade: 37

We see a replay of last week’s action that saw the Rock defeat Faarooq by disqualification when the Nation interfered. We also see how the tandem of Flash Funk and Mark Henry came to the Rock’s rescue.

Grade: 48

Quote:

Henry begins the match against Faarooq and after a few running shoulder blocks that go absolutely nowhere from Faarooq it’s clear he can’t move Henry. Kama is begging for the tag and he comes in. Now it’s his turn and he runs off the ropes and slams into Henry who sends him to the mat. He tries a second time, and ends up on his back again. Third time is a charm and Kama runs towards Henry who snatches him up in a bear hug. Kama is frantic trying to reach for a tag but Henry simply walks him over to the corner and the Rock tags himself in. The Rock spends the next couple minutes working over Kama. Faarooq doesn’t seem very interested in tagging in and Kama takes the brunt of the Rock’s moves before being put flat on his back with a Rock Bottom. Henry gets the tag and adds a flattening splash for the win as Faarooq doesn’t even break up the count.

Winners by Pinfall: The Rock and Mark Henry
Grade: 71

With both the Rock and Henry standing tall, the Nation regroups on the outside. Faarooq gets a mic and says they won’t be smiling in three weeks and says he’ll see their asses in Greensboro!

Grade: 79

JR and the King remind us that coming up in three weeks is Unforgiven and the Nation has accepted the Rock’s challenge.

And after months of attacks and taunts the Bizzare Goldust will meet Ahmed Johnson in a Hollywood street fight.

In addition to that we know we’ll see:

They make sure to encourage the audience to order Unforgiven on Pay Per View!

Grade: 88

We see a replay of the attack on WWF Champion Owen Hart by D-Generation which ended last week’s RAW.

Grade: 76

Quote:

Shawn Michaels is sitting ringside doing guest commentary in this one. Triple H begins against Owen and once the champion is maneuvered into the DX corner the three of them take the match over, with the newcomer cousins getting some time in the ring and laying it on Owen before letting Triple H back in. This works for a few minutes but when its Owen and Adam Helmsley, the champion makes the youngster pay for an ill conceived top rope maneuver and makes he makes the tag to Henry Godwinn who begins to light up the heels. Now it's the Godwinns’ turn to get in some double team action with quick tags. With Christian Helmsley as the legal man, Owen is tagged back in and the Godwinns take to the outside brawling with Triple H and Adam. Christian attempts to hit a facebuster but Owen reverses it, puts him on his back, and locks in the Sharpshooter for the win.

Winners by Submission: Owen Hart and the Godwinns
Grade: 80

Owen releases the Sharpshooter and gets his arm raised but he doesn’t see Shawn Michaels leave the commentary table and when he turns around he catches Sweet Chin Music right in the mouth. Michaels stands over the champ, with a wide smirk, and mocks him but quickly ditches when the Godwinns get back in the ring. DX recollects itself on the ramp and even though they lost you’d swear they won as the show goes off the air.

April 1998 Week 2

Nitro: 22.41 (16,814,560 viewers)

Raw: 20.64 (15,482,090 viewers)

*Backstage during the Heat tapings, the Sandman and Shawn Michaels got into a fight and as one source put it “Sandman beat the piss out of him.” Michaels wanted Sandman fired but we have learned Sandman was fined for his actions.

*Sunny recently resigned a short term contract extension with WWF. This came as a surprise to a few who thought she had burned all her bridges. There are some who think the growing program between her and Sable might be fireworks both in the ring and out.

*The feud between the Rock and the Nation is expected to continue through the spring and summer. We’re hearing that this may be a flashpoint for ‘attitude’ and they may be given a lot of wiggle room when it comes to offensive content.

*WrestleMania XIV was the last appearance in the WWF for Roddy Piper, at least for a little while. Following his match with Triple H, Piper signed a touring contract with a UK company. Almost assuredly we’ll see him back ‘home’ at some point in the future.

*The additions to DX, Adam Copeland and Jay Reso, were well known on the independent scene as Sexton Hardcastle and Christian Cage. There had been talk of bringing them in under a vampire gimmick but when the opportunity presented itself, they were seen as naturals for the position though some sources claim the New Age Outlaws were also considered.

*Speaking of the Outlaws, Road Dogg Jesse James has been out the last two weeks with an injury he suffered in the tag team title match at WrestleMania XIV. After a quick outpatient procedure he’s expected back in action before Unforgiven.

*Expect a stipulation to be added to the Hart-Michaels title rematch and like WrestleMania XIV they’ll be given at least 25 minutes.

*We’ve been hearing rumors for a few months of a change inside WWF. Sources say this will happen in June or July as one television show, likely Shotgun Saturday Night is renamed and becomes a ‘brand’ for the company. No word at this time as to what this brand will consist of or what will make it stand apart but it has been a major focus of the creative and talent relations department over the last month.

*In the heat of the war between WWF and WCW, ECW has kept under the radar for the most part but while they have hemorrhaged talent to the bigger companies, many are beginning to wonder how much time the little hardcore engine that could has left as evidenced by the fact that their World, Tag, and TV titles are all currently vacant. It’s unclear what Paul Heyman can or will do to right their ship.

*Randy Savage, though still retired on screen, will return to the road with WCW as a backstage road agent. He has taken most of the year off but, last week he flew to Atlanta and met with Eric Bischoff and the two agreed that Randy's contributions to WCW should continue in a more managerial capacity backstage. The belief is that this new role will allow him to continue in the business for years to come. Savage starts as a road agent at Spring Stampede next weekend.

*The identity of the woman that distracted the Hardys on Nitro and has been revealed on Saturday Night to be named "Carlena" is Dawn Marie Psaltis. She has spent the last few years in and around the New Jersey indy scene and came to the attention of WCW late last year. They signed her and sent her to WCW Mid Atlantic and then called her back for this role. She will fit the Miss Hyatt role as the Nasty Girl for the Nasty Boys going forward.

*WCW also hired Ron and Don Harris after their try out match with The Hardys on Nitro. They will be on the road this week with the House Show in LaCrosse, Wisconsin and the tv. WCW is focusing on beefing up their tag division.

*WCW has informed pay per view providers that they are dropping the Fall Brawl name for their September pay per view and rebranding the show simply "War Games". We are told that creative is already in place for a major story to play out at that pay per view.

*With WCW's Japan SuperShow nearing (Friday Week 4 and Saturday Week 4), the main event of both shows have been announced. On Friday Week 4, Night 1 - the main event will feature whomever is the loser between Sting and Bret Hart at Spring Stampede against Japanese legend, Kensuke Sasaki. On Saturday Week 4, Night 2 - the main event will be a WCW World Heavyweight Title Match. The entire crew will leave from tv on Tuesday that week and fly to Japan. Following the two night SuperShow, the whole crew will fly to Norfolk Virginia for the Nitro show that week at The Scope.

Quote:
The Blackjacks vs Rob Conway and Nick Dinsmore

The Blackjacks seem to be back to working as a team as they use their strength to double team the smaller Conway and DInsmore. Even when Dinsmore begins mounting a comeback, a blind tag to Windham ends it quickly before Bradshaw nails him with a huge lariat for the win.

Winners by Pinfall: The Blackjacks

Quote:
The Sandman vs Paul Diamond

In a very quick match the Sandman controls the action from start to finish hitting several of his traditional moves. The English crowd wasn’t too keen on this one and it was brought to an end when the Sandman hit DIamond with a Russian Leg Sweep for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: The Sandman

The announcers recap the known card for Unforgiven.

Mero is busy talking to Sunny as the match begin and Vega makes him pay by laying into him and continuing the attack over the next few minutes. Mero makes a comeback however thanks to a distraction from Sunny and relies on his boxing background to wear down Vega before putting him down with the TKO.

As the show ends Mero and Sunny celebrate his win and look very cozy together.

The Impact Players vs The Quebecers

The Quebeccers control the early moments with underhanded double teams but Lynn makes the tag to Credible who begins cleaning house, lighting up both opponents with superkicks. Lynn tags in and nails Jacques with a missile dropkick from the top rope and then they hit Rougeau with Total Impact for the win.

Winners by Pinfall: The Impact Players

Cole informs us that next week here on Heat, the main event will be Kama going one on one with Mark Henry!

Grade: 41

The announcers run down the lineup for the upcoming Unforgiven pay per view.

Grade:99

We see a replay of Saturday Night’s Main Event a few months ago when Simon Landry defeated Vader in one of the biggest upsets in WWF History.

Quote:
Vader vs Simon Landry

Landry uses his speed to stay away from Vader’s bearpaws, striking and moving away. This only frustrates the big man but the more Vader pushes the action, the more he walks into Landry’s traps, topped off when he charges into the corner and when Landry moves, Vader hits chest first, dropping to a knee. Landry is lining up Vader for another attack when Marvelous Marc Mero comes down to the ring and distracts Landry. This buys Vader time, who holds onto the referee for the moment. Mero climbs onto the apron, jawing with Landry and when Landry turns to check on Vader, Mero cracks him with a right hand, dropping him to the canvas with the cheap shot. Mero drops down and Vader pounces, straddling Landry with pummeling him with rights and lefts. He follows it with several elbow drops to a defenseless Landry before hitting a Vader Bomb for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Vader
Grade: 69

We see a replay of Mero’s cheap shot and how it affected the tide of the match and as the show goes off the air, Mero is all smiiles.

================================================

WCW Live starts with a welcome to the show by David Penzer and then....

Dusty Rhodes comes out from the back and he welcomes us to this live special house show and thanks the fans for coming out. He talks about tradition and how, despite their differences, tradition will reign in Calgary in one just one week at Spring Stampede when Bret Hart faces Sting for the World Heavyweight Title. Tradition is what WCW is all about. Respect for our industry is what we are all fighting for. And he will be so proud to be in Calgary to see that match.

But, thats in seven days. Tonight is for you guys. And tonight tradition will rule once more because tonight Curt Hennig - a man known to this part of the country, will challenge Sting for the World Heavyweight Title LIVE in LaCrosse. And the American Dream has a message for Hennig..."Curt, I've known you since you were a little baby sitting on your dadd's knee...do the right thing tonight, buddy. Be a man. Fight Sting like a man and win or lose like a man. It's what your daddy would want..its what tradition is all about baby.
Enjoy the show."

Dusty leaves slapping hands as we go to our first match.

Quote:
Match #1: The Harris Brothers vs Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko
A pretty good back and forth match for awhile while the Harris Brothers eventually take over beating down Dean and keeping him from Benoit. After a missed boot, Malenko is able to floor Ron Harris and make the hot tag. The Crippler cleans house and soon he is nailing the flying headbutt for the 1...2...3.

Winners: Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko

Grade: 79

Following the match, Shane Douglas and Elizabeth stand in the aisle way and mockingly clap for Benoit and Malenko. Benoit goes after him but Malenko stops him, reminding him that in seven days he will get his chance.

Match #2: Al Snow vs The Giant w/Bobby Heenan

Al Snow tries to fight early on and gets some traction but then Bobby Hennan starts shouting "he's Goldberg" and that flips a switch for the Giant. The big man starts mauling Snow and soon he falls to the Chokeslam for the 3 count.

Winner: The Giant
Grade: 50

Guido comes out saying he doesn't care about tradition and he doesn't care about the fans here tonight. He is Cruiserweight Champ and all he cares about is laying waste to his victim here tonight and defending his title next Sunday at Spring Stampede.

Quote:
Match #3 WCW Cruiserweight Title Match: Chavo Guerrero vs WCW Cruiserweight Champion Guido
Chavo tries to nail some high flying moves while Guido works on ground and pound. Chavo jumps off the ropes to attack Guido on the floor and misses tweaking his knee. Back in the ring, Guido works on the knee over and over again while Chavo refuses to be fallen. When Guido goes for his Sicilian Crab (Half Boston Crab), Chavo reverses it for a near fall. Chavo nails a frog splash for a 2 count and goes for a Northern Lights but cant keep Guido up. Guido locks in the Sicilian Crab and Chavo has to tap out.

Winner and Still WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Guido
Grade: 77

***INTERMISSION***

Curt Hennig comes out after intermission and says he heard what Dusty Rhodes said tonight and he hates to admit it...but, Dusty is right. While Curt wants back in the nWo he's still a Hennig and, more importantly, hes still a man. So, Sting look out because tonight, the *REAL* Curt Hennig is coming for you and he's going to Spring Stampede as the World Heavyweight Champion.

Match #4 WCW World Tag Team Titles Match: The Hardys vs The Empire
The Hardys come out lightening fast and nearly topple the champs but then Matt Hardy makes a mistake and the vets cut him off and take him apart for quite awhile. After surviving some near falls and taking a beating, Matt is able to tag in his brother Jeff. Jeff cleans house and soon has Taylor down and is ascending for the Senton Bomb when suddenly, Finlay grabs the ropes and crotches Jeff. When he falls into the ring, Finlay kicks Jeff dead in the balls right in front of the referee for the DQ.

After the match, The Empire quickly grab their belts and escape to a chorus of boos.

Winners by Disqualifiction: The Hardys
Grade: 80

Quote:
Match #5 Devon Storm vs Konnan
This match is basically about highlighting that Konnan is a devastating threat. Devon tries to fight but he's no match and its not long before Konnan lifts Devon up in a suplex before dropping him on his head in a Cradle DDT for the 3 count.

Winner: Konnan

Following the match, Konnan gets on the mic and promises to make Eddie his senorita at Spring Stampede and win the United States Title once again.

Grade: 67
David Penzer tells us that there is one match left and its for the World Heavyweight Title but reminds us to tune into Monday Nitro LIVE from the Target Center in Minneapolis tomorrow night because we have been told that the Outsiders and Bret Hart and DDP and Chris Jericho will be on hand. Do not miss it. 8pm and only on TNT.

Quote:
Match #6 - *MAIN EVENT* - WCW World Heavyweight Title Match: Curt Hennig vs Sting

This is one of Curt Hennig's best showings in a very long time as he very nearly beats the World Champion within the opening moments of the match. Sting tries to battle back and soon we have a scientific encounter where Sting is trying to lock in the Scorpion Deathlock but Curt has a counter for it each time. After some fighting on the floor, Sting rolls Curt into the ring but receives a trip by Hennig and a snap mare and then the Hennig Plex. 1...2..Sting is out. Curt goes for it again but Sting reverses out and nails the Scorpion Death Drop for the 1..2..3.

Winner and Still WCW World Heavyweight Champion: Sting
Grade: 85

Following the match, Sting in sign of respect, puts out his hand to Curt. Hennig looks like he might accept it but then slaps his hand away, kicks the rope and bails. Sting, shakes his head disappointed and then celebrates to the crowd. Penzer thanks us all for coming and reminds us once more to tune into Nitro tomorrow night and make sure everyone orders Spring Stampede in seven days.
Good night everyone!

Jeff then slaps Brian in the face and the two teams brawl. Officials rush and restore order. This brings out the champs who tell the two that they are tired of this high school drama - at Spring Stampede- they'll take on them both in a no rules Triangle Match. Hall, Nash and Syxxx return as they all come out cockily to open hour #2. They get into the ring and Nash begins to gloat about their "tune up" earlier tonight and promise to destroy Page and Jericho once and for all in six days at Spring Stampede when the lights suddenly go out.

When they come back on, Jericho and Page are on the floor around the ring and they both have baseball bats. The crowd comes alive as Jericho & DDP look at the 3 on 2 odds, shrug and go into the ring. Syxxx charges Jericho who ducks and nails him in the stomach with the bat. With Jericho threatening Nash and Hall, DDP nails the Diamond Cutter onto Syxxx and throws him out the ring. Nash and Hall prepare to charge and Jericho and Page swing the bats...

Hall and Nash stop in mid charge and bail from the ring. They take off down the aisle with Syxxx on Nash's shoulders as Page and Jericho look at each other, look at the cheering crowd, and then grab their bats and give chase. [As soon as the ring is cleared we go to the announcers who talk about the heinousness of what we just saw. But they can barely put it over before:
Shane Douglas and Elizabeth come out to the ring and they are overly cocky and touchy feely as they get into the ring and she hands the Franchise a mic. Douglas says that he is in a good mood tonight because in six days he's going to rid WCW of the protege of Ric Flair and Arn Anderson just like he ran those two old fossils out of here. While people may think that this cage match would be a bad thing for The Franchise, it is anything but. Shane Douglas made his bones by being the king of extreme situations and believe you me, this Sunday will be no different. Chris Benoit and Shane Douglas will bleed, they will hurt but when the night is over the Franchise will stand tall because there is always a plan....

Chris Benoit can't stand it anymore and he comes out. He's a fit of rage while Douglas mocks him from the ring saying over and over again "you cant touch me". Benoit looks determined as he slides into the ring and walks with malice toward Douglas who is now using Elizabeth as a shield.

Douglas backs up and continues to do so until he is in a corner and all that is standing between him and Benoit is Liz. Douglas, weakly says one more time, "you can't touch me" while he and Liz both look scared. Benoit walks up and his chest is touching Elizabeth's as he gets a sick smile and leans into Douglas' microphone and says, "in six days, when you’re locked in that cage with me, she won’t be able to save you." Benoit pats Liz on the cheek and then leaves the ring. Douglas and Elizabeth look terrified as Nitro goes to a commercial break. ]

Match #5 - NITRO MAIN EVENT

============================

[Mean Gene is at the Nitro set and he tells Minneapolis to welcome to the Target Center...DA Man...GOLDBERG! The crowd roars as Goldberg comes out with taped ribs. Gene asks Goldberg how he's doing but before he can do so, Bobby Hennan has come out and says "allow me to answer for you Bill. You're hurt bad, aren't you? The Giant laid you out in New York City and them, foolishly, you tried to return at a non televised show and what happened then? The Giant nearly killed you. Do the right thing, jug head, announce your retirement because if you stick around my Giant is going to end your cagggg"

Goldberg grabs Heenan by the throat and says "I'll be cleared to return next week and I want the Giant". Heenan drops to his knees begging for mercy which proves to be a distraction as the Giant strikes Goldberg from behind. He begins to choke Goldberg just like at Uncensored and then lifts him up for a chokeslam. But, instead throws Goldberg right into the WCW logo set piece. Heenan grabs Gene's dropped mic and says "that's the third time, Goldberg. When you return and my Giant meets you in the ring, that's exactly what it will be...One...Two...Three."

Medics rush to Goldberg's aid as the Giant and Hennan walk away laughing at Goldberg's destruction again as Nitro goes to commercial. ]

[

Bret comes out to the ring and his face is all business as he gets into the ring. He grabs a mic and says, "Sting, I know that somewhere in this building you are here. Thanks to our friends, The Wolfpac are gone. It's just you and me and I am prepared to stand in this ring until you come out here and face me." The cameras search the skies but no Sting until suddenly there is a commotion and we see Sting near the top of the fans. The spotlight follows him as he descends from the top of the Target Center one step at a time.

By the time Sting makes it to ringside and hops over the railing, Bret is nearly pacing in the ring. Sting looks around like he's expecting an ambush before stepping up and into the ring and immediately pulls out his bat. Bret walks up to Sting:

"You don't need that bat with me because, despite what Nash said last week, I am a straight shooter. You and me have a problem now. For years I've watched as you carried the WCW banner high - the only one to ever really do that. And I've been here for six months and heard from everyone how you're WCW's dark knight. How Sting is the one that will save us all and win the battle with the New World Order. And I believed it.

Now? Now, I'm not so sure. Maybe we all were wrong about you all along. Because two weeks ago, I made a mistake. I was blinded by Syxxx and I swung by accident. You've had to see the footage by now and know that I'm telling the truth. Sting looks hesitant but then stares blankly again But, you? What you did last week was intentional.

You watched your friends, your so called allies, get demolished by the Wolfpac and you did nothing to help us. Your actions were not heroic, they were cowardly. So I am left to think that maybe you're not the hero WCW needs. Maybe you're not our savior after all. And maybe you're not the champion that we need to win this war.

So, in six days, in my hometown I am going to take your title from you. I will take your mantle of protector of tradition and leader of WCW. Because you've proven you don't have the integrity we all thought that you did."

Sting gets an intensely fierce look in his eyes and gets nose to nose with Bret before slapping the Hitman's teeth out. The slap literally puts Bret down on one knee. Bret gets up and responds by decking Sting who drops to the ground. Sting gets up and tackles Bret and suddenly the two are delivering punches all over the ring. JJ Dillon comes running down the aisle and tries to break this up but the two will not be stopped. He starts calling for the back and officials run out but Bret and Sting take them out and go back at each other. Eventually wrestlers, good and bad (recognizing how important it is for WCW to stay united), start pouring from the back to try to separate the two.

As Nitro comes to an end, Bret and Sting are separated by wrestlers but Sting breaks free and charges Bret. Chaos is reigning in the Target Center as Nitro goes off the air.]

In the DX locker room, the Helmsley cousins are getting ready for their debut tag match later tonight when Shawn Michaels enters dressed sharply in a black suit. Whatever it was that Faarooq was expecting in this match he didn’t get it when the bell rang when Flash Funk exploded into him with a picture perfect dropkick followed by a flurry of high energy moves which kept the leader of the Nation on his heels, going so far as to get a close two count following a cross body block from the second rope. But the tide turns when Funk gets a little ahead of himself and tries a leaping splash into the corner but when Faarooq moves, Funk strikes the post with his head and is out of commission. Faarooq begins to punish his opponent from that point on, belittling him verbally in the process. Finally Faarooq hoists a near limp Flash and delivers the Dominator for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Faarooq
Grade: 72

The Nation continues to put the beatdown on Flash before violently ripping his jumpsuit off his chest and back. Kama and D’lo hold his arms and legs stretched out as Faarooq retrieves a belt and begins whipping Flash across his back. The bell continues to ring but Faarooq continues for several more strikes before finally stopping. With Flash writhing at their feet, the Nation holds up a fist as their plays.

Stone Cold Steve Austin is in his locker room when Michael Cole approaches. Austin says that he’s not worried about tonight, he’s got his eyes on Unforgiven and Triple H. They have unfinished business and Triple H is holding something that belongs to Stone Cold and that just isn’t gonna stand. So at Unforgiven in two weeks that Intercontinental championship is coming back to its rightful owner and there ain’t nothing Triple H can do about it and that’s the bottom line cause Stone Cold said so!

In their debut tag match here on RAW the newest members of DX who JR refers to as “The Trust” in reference to their trust funds as well as Triple H’s belief in them, waste no time taking care of business with the Headbangers. With quick fluid tags, the Helmsleys focus on Mosh and keep him isolated throughout the match, eventually finishing him off when Adam nailed Mosh with a spear, followed by Christian delivering a legdrop off the second rope for the win.

Winners by Pinfall: The Trust

Backstage Mankind is walking through the hallways, looking around before he stops cold. Slowly he walks up to someone and when the camera pans we see it’s Terry Funk. Mankind asks what his problem is and Funk, calling Mankind ‘Cactus’ says that his problem is denial of self. Funk knows him very well and he knows that this mask or a tye-dyed shirt isn’t him. He wants to see who’s buried beneath. Mankind says he doesn’t know what he’s asking for but before he can even finish the sentence, Funk slaps him across the face. Funk says that he’s going to Unforgiven and he is calling out Cactus Jack. If Cactus has any balls he’ll show up. Funk walks away and Mankind slowly looks up from the slap with a sneer.

Grade: 74

We see a replay of what happened between Mankind and Terry Funk including the echo of the slap Funk laid on his face in calling out Cactus Jack.

The Sandman shows no fear of Vader and takes him on from the opening bell, but even as Vader absorbs the punishment, he quickly overtakes the Sandman with a devastating clothesline. From there Vader pours it on, taunting the Sandman saying nobody can save him, no one can stop Vader, especially not the Undertaker. The Sandman keeps fighting but he’s outmatched in this one and he’s finally put away with a Vader Bomb.

Winner by Pinfall: Vader
Grade: 77

Vader looks as if he wants to deliver more punishment when the lights go out and we hear the gong.

and again

Finally the ring is bathed in purple light as lightning strikes the stage and the lights come back on and the Undertaker is standing where the lightning struck. He tells Vader that at Unforgiven, the bell tolls for thee.

Following the commercial break, Shawn Michaels comes down to the ring. He says that tonight he is going to shatter the mystique of the Hart family. Everyone has this ideal that they’re perfect. That they’re so great. But the truth is...well, don’t take it from Shawn, take it from a living breathing Hart. He motions up the ramp and out comes a young man.

Shawn introduces him as Teddy Hart. Hart shakes his hand and takes the mic. He says everything that Shawn has said about his family is true. The older Harts are too busy protecting their made up legacy to admit the truth but he’s the next generation, it’s his job to carry the mantle and he’s here to set things straight. The truth is, he is ashamed of his family. His uncle Bret is a coward. His grandfather is a senile old fool. And as far as Owen Hart….he doesn’t have a tenth of the talent, drive, or wrestling ability of Teddy. He’s a fluke and at Unforgiven, the title is going back around the waist of Shawn Michaels. They shake hands again and Michaels holds Teddy’s arm up in the air, as they face each direction of the ring. Michaels says that if Owen didn’t get the message maybe he’ll get this one and suddenly hits Teddy with sweet chin music. Michaels smirks as he looks down at the unconscious youngster as the crowd comes to life.

Owen comes running down to the ring and Michaels quickly ditches. Owen doesn’t give chase as he checks on his nephew but Michaels can’t help but laugh as the chaos he’s caused.

A vignette is shown with new WWF European Champion William Regal, who is apparently still in Europe. He has a man with him dressed in a tuxedo with a bowler hat who is carrying the championship belt. Regal says that he has stayed in Europe following his victory to ensure that the first opponents he defended his title against were worthy of the opportunity and of course that means actual europeans. He says that he defended his championship twenty-three times already all across Europe and has proven himself as champion but now he and Mr. Casey will be headed back to the United States (he nearly grimaces when saying the name) and he will be making his first appearance at Unforgiven. Until then, just remember, the sun will never set on the Regal Empire.

JR and the King run down the updated card for Unforgiven which comes to us on pay per view in two weeks! They highlight two new matches made tonight including a mixed tag match and a Texas Death Match--a match made famous by Dory Funk, Sr.

Ahmed Johnson makes his way down to ringside and takes a seat at the commentary table. JR welcomes him while Lawler doesn’t seem too pleased to see him. Johnson thanks Ross for the welcome and says he wants the best seat in the house to see what happens to Goldust tonight.

Grade: 71

Quote:

As soon as Austin hits the ring he tears into Goldust, hitting a series of his usual moves and sending Goldust over the top with a clothesline before he even bothers to take off his vest. He rips it off and follows Goldust to the outside, attempting to whip him into the post but Goldust reverses it and Austin hits the post hard. Goldust clears the cobwebs and begins stomping Austin, slamming his head into the apron before rolling him back into the ring. Goldust controls the match for awhile, trying to get several pin attempts. The crowd begins to stand as Triple H comes out onto the stage but goes no further.

Goldust looks like he’s closing in on a victory but when he whips Austin into the ropes, Austin ducks a clothesline and bounds back and nails a Thesz Press, raining right hands down. He then drops a surgical elbow but when he goes to pick Goldust up, Austin gets a thumb to the eye. As Austin tries to get his vision back, Goldust comes up from behind and tries to hit a Curtain Call but when he raises Austin up, Austin’s momentum takes him up and over Goldust. Goldust turns around right into a boot to the gut and a Stone Cold Stunner! Austin hooks the leg and gets the win. As soon as the bell rings, Triple H is in the ring and bashes Austin in the back of the head.
Winner by Pinfall: Stone Cold Steve Austin

Grade: 87

Triple H keeps up the attack but Austin blocks a punch and returns fire and now it’s a fight! They tumble out out of the ring and begin brawling at ringside and even with all the referees standing about, nobody is willing to get between them. Shane McMahon comes running down to ringside as he watches one of his pay per view main events disintegrating in front of his eyes.

Austin gets the upper hand and sends Triple H over the barrier into the timekeeper’s area. With the action calmed down, Shane gets closer and checks on Austin who’s needing a moment to pull himself together after the fight. What neither man sees is Triple H rising with a chair in hand. He sees Austin and makes a beeline for him and swings but at the last moment Shane McMahon is in the way and Triple H nearly decapitates the WWF Commissioner. As the show ends, an unconscious McMahon is laid out between Austin and Triple H and JR questions what this means for Unforgiven.
