WCW Monday Nitro - Episode 135
Monday Week 4, April 1998 - Tacoma Dome- Tacoma, Washington

[Nitro opens to still photos of last night's WCW World Heavyweight Title match between Bret Hart and Sting. It focuses on the epic clash and finally on the celebration as Bret Hart and his family celebrate in the ring. We also see backstage shots of Bret hugging his children and also hugging Page and Jericho and shaking hands with Sting once more.

We then cut to the usual WCW Monday Nitro opening and then a live shot of the Tacoma Dome outside before going inside to the WCW Nitro set being set ablaze as professional wrestling's #1 program is live on the air.]

============================

[Tony and the crew welcome us to a new era in World Championship Wrestling because, yes, we have a new champion in professional wrestling and that is the Hitman Bret Hart. We then go to a live shot of Mean Gene in the ring who is beaming.

"Ladies and Gentlemen it is my honor to introduce to you..the NEW Heavyweight Champion of the World, Bret "Hitman" Hart"

Tacoma explodes as Bret comes out with the belt over his shoulder. He is all smiles and beaming as he makes his way down the aisle. He gets in the ring and hugs Gene. Bret bows to the crowd as he says that he has had alot of memorable and special moments in his career but, last night might have been the most memorable and the most special. Bret takes a moment to thank Sting even with their recent issues, he respects Sting, he thinks Sting was a terrific champion for the most prestigious prize in this business and it is a true honor to have faced him in the ring.

But that was last night and now its all about the future. Bret intends to be, as he always has been, a fighting champion. Last night, Kevin Nash appeared to want to have a shot at this title so, Bret is issuing an open invitation to "Big Sexy" to come on out right now.

Bret looks confused as Booker T comes out and shakes Bret's hand. Booker says that last night at Spring Stampede Booker avenged the forced retirement of Harlem Heat by defeating Rick Steiner so now, its time to move on. And Booker knows that he is not Kevin Nash and he is not who Bret called out but, if Bret is issuing an open challenge here tonight...Booker T is accepting.

Bret looks at him for a minute before getting a smile and saying "you want a shot at this title tonight, Book?" Booker looks at the fans raising the roof and affirms that he does and Bret says "its on". They shake hands as the match is made and we now have a WCW World Title match to headline Nitro later this evening. ]

The show begins with a video recap of last week first showing the latest between WWF Champion Owen Hart and Shawn Michaels when Michaels used a Hart family member to taunt the champ, followed by a recap of the brawl between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H which ended with WWF Commissioner Shane McMahon laid out from a vicious chair shot.

Grade: 91

April Week 4
Baltimore Arena
Baltimore, MD
14,000 in attendance

Quote:

The show begins with both men already in the ring and it’s clear that Henry’s power and size is the defining trait in the match. He dominates the early minutes but Brown makes a comeback when Henry misses a charge into the corner but no matter what D’Lo does he can’t get Henry off his feet. Henry hits a side slam when he catches Brown coming off the ropes. From there he drops a few elbows and finally slaps on the side headlock and from there it’s naptime for D’Lo.

Winner by Submission: Mark Henry
Grade: 52

Faarooq and Kama come down to the ring looking like they’ve got bad intentions but Henry stops them in their tracks when he picks up Brown in a military press and throws him over the top rope onto them, sending all three to the floor. Henry is all smiles as the Nation appears in shambles.

Grade: 59

We cut to the backstage where the Undertaker and Vader are brawling down the corridors using whatever they can get their hands on as weapons. The Undertaker appears to be getting the upper hand as they turn a corner and get out of sight.

Grade: 85

WWF Champion Owen Hart bursts into the office of Commissioner Shane McMahon and when Shane asks what he wants Owen says he wants to make Shawn Michaels pay for last week but he doesn’t want to do it once, he wants to do it over and over. At Unforgiven he wants his title defense to be an Iron Man match. Shane seems to contemplate this for a moment then nods and says it’s fine with him and offers his hand. Hart hesitates a moment before shaking it and leaving the office.

Grade: 88

Johnson puts his strength on display against both Goldust and Mero, but it’s when Landry gets the tag that he begins putting on a clinic of his own. The heels bail to the outside to talk it over when he leans down and smacks their heads together before pulling Mero back into the ring. As Landry presses his advantage, Sunny climbs onto the apron when suddenly Sable comes running down and yanks her down. They begin to tussle which catches the eye of Landry. When he turns to see what’s happening, Mero hits a low blow unseen by the referee who is also focused on the women. Mero rolls Landry up with the aid of a handful of tights and gets the three count.

Winners by Pinfall: Goldust and Marc Mero
Grade: 71

We see a replay of how the ringside catfight distracted Simon Landry allowing Marc Mero to score a pinfall with the aid of the tights.

Grade: 58

DX is in its locker room having a good laugh about Owen Hart demanding an Iron Man match at Unforgiven. Michaels comments that his track record in that match against a Hart is pretty good. In the back of the room Triple H agrees and says tonight he’s going to give a preview for his own match with Austin. He shares some hand gestures with his comrades and heads out with Chyna.

B]Grade: 74[/b]

Quote:
NON TITLE MATCH

These two put on a tremendous match which goes back and forth. Even with the WWF Intercontinental championship not on the line, Vega fights Triple H with everything he has and pushes the champion to the limit but when the going gets tough, Chyna plays her role and distracts Vega enough to allow Triple H to reclaim the momentum and he keeps it, eventually ending the match with a Pedigree.

Winner by Pinfall: Triple H
Grade: 83

Triple H isn’t done as he tells Chyna to hand him a chair and as Savio tries to get up, Triple H smacks him across the back again and again. Finally Shane McMahon comes down and gets in the ring, telling Triple H to back off. He checks on Savio, then turns to say something to Triple H when he take a hellacious chairshot to the head. Triple H stands over McMahon and gives him a crotch chop for good measure before leaving the ring.

Grade: 84

The War Zone begins with a replay of WWF Intercontinental Champion Triple H nailing Commissioner Shane McMahon with a chair for the second week in a row. JR comments how malicious this one appeared to be.

Grade: 74

We see Shane McMahon in the medical room as his father’s advisors surround him. They talk about how Triple H should be fined, or suspended, or even fired but Shane cuts them off and says that’d be the easy way out. This Sunday at Unforgiven Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin will have a special referee for their WWF Intercontinental Championship rematch…..him. Patterson and Brisco exchange worried looks.

Grade: 82

We’re taken to a pre recorded promo by Cactus Jack. He says that though it will be easy to feel pity or sympathy for Terry Funk after their Texas Death Match this Sunday, Funk deservers neither. He’s not some babe in the woods. He knows what he’s asking for. They have a long history and have damned near killed one another all over the world. So don’t cry for Terry Funk, because when it’s all said and done he will be responsible for his own suffering. Bang Bang.

Grade: 80

Quote:

As soon as Austin hits the ring the fight is on and it’s a brawl from one corner of the ring to the other. Windham uses all his experience to take control of the match, laying into Austin and even getting a two count following a side slam. The Rattlesnake battles back and floors Windham with a Thesz Press, raining down right hands followed by a surgical elbow drop. Blackjack Bradshaw sees what’s building and gets on the apron. Austin is momentarily distracted allowing Windham to charge but Austin moves and the Blackjacks collide. Windham is staggered opening him up for a kick to the gut and a Stone Cold Stunner for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Stone Cold Steve Austin

Grade: 76

JR and the King run down the final card for this Sunday’s Unforgiven. Call your local cable or satellite company today to order it before it’s too late!

Grade: 90

The New Age Outlaws come out to the ring and Road Dogg says that he wishes he didn’t have to do this but recently a deep dark secret of the Godwinn family has some to light and this is something the world has to know. It turns out, and this was even hard for the Outlaws to believe, +but it appears that Henry and Phinneas have been known to take advantage of two females in their family...ya know….sexually. The crowd boos but Billy Gunn says that they didn’t want to believe it but they have witnesses….in fact its the very same females who have been abused for years at the hands of the Godwinns. Don’t believe them? Well here they are! From backstage come two large hogs and while the crowd keeps booing, the Outlaws break out in belly laughs.

Their smiles vanish when the WWF Tag Team Champions come sprinting down to the ring and the former champs ditch out into the crowd. The Godwinns look fit to be tied as the Outlaws taunt them.

Grade: 60

We’re shown a replay of what the Outlaws just did, with JR calling it one of the most reprehensible things he’s ever seen.

Grade: 49

The Rock is backstage with Michael Cole. He says that tonight is the culmination of a long journey but he does want to take a moment to thank Faarooq. It was Faarooq who helped him find himself. To become the Rock, and that is something he will always be grateful for. But…..but…..it was also Faarooq who turned on the Rock, who tried to destroy the Rock….and tonight Michael Cole, it will be the Rock who lays the smackdown on Faarooq’s candyass! If you smell what the Rock is cooking!

Grade: 97

Quote:

The match begins with some face to face trash talking which quickly devolves into both men trading right hands. The Rock gets the better of the exchange and backs Faarooq into the corner before whipping him across the ring but when the Rock rushes in, he’s leveled by a flying shoulder block.

Faarooq puts a beatdown on the Rock for the next few minutes and begins setting up for the Dominator but the Rock blocks it once, twice, and on the third time the Rock backdrops Faarooq. Faarooq hurries to his feet and is met with a flurry of right hands, a kick to the stomach and a lightning fast DDT for the 1...2..Faarooq kicks out and rolls out of the ring for a breather but the Rock follows.

The two begin brawling leading to the Rock clotheslining Faarooq over the guard rail and into the crowd. The two of them begin fighting further amongst the audience as the referee counts to 10 and calls for the bell.

No Contest: Double Count Out
Grade: 84

While the brawl between Faarooq and the Rock goes into the crowd, suddenly Vader and the Undertaker appear on the stage, fighting from the back. The Undertaker staggers Vader with a big right hand and scoops him up to deliver a Tombstone but Vader slips off his shoulder and when Undertaker turns around, Vader boots him in the face, knocking him off the stage and through a table. The show ends with Vader looming over the Undertaker, who’s barely moving, screaming ‘It’s Vader Time!” down at the Deadman.

Too bad to see this go in the freezer as I was really enjoying it and often felt it didn't get enough attention on the boards as a whole.

That said, I'm excited to see what you two have planned next!
