Default Mafia Capo: Payback - Game Features

Hey Grey Dog players!

For those of you who've stuck by Grey Dog a long time, you'll know of me pretty well. I created Arcadia and Imperium for GD a few years ago, and now i'm coming back to start a brand new game, Mafia Capo: Payback, and game where you become a mafia don running your own gangster squad. It'll be published by Grey Dog and is about 8% completed currently.

Preliminary features:
- Randomly generated world and residents every game with 7 different stats (range 1-20), including fighting, cars, fraud, stealing, and hacking among others.
- Lots of things to do with varying risk/reward percentages.
- Deal with lawyers, judges to tip the odds and your gangsters getting arrested, hurt or killed.
- They might go to jail, but you have the option to break them out!
- Shake down businesses, set up on streets to deal drugs or stolen goods, hack onto sites to steal info, and more.
- Deal with a secret rival gang leader AI and his crew that can - and will - mess with you. Random world events can shake things up at any time.
- Lots of varying options, difficulty levels and goals. Play the way you want!
- Mod support: Create a world of your own with real or made-up gangsters and ratings you set and load them into the game.
- Slick, polished interface at 1366x768 res with original music and sound.

Of course, i'll be looking for any ideas you guys might have! Main Menu and Options screen are nearly finished already; screens coming soon.

Although I'm sure you are doing lots of research, I would say don't just focus on the American Style Mafia. Read up on the likes of the Krays and Richardsons in England. Escobar and the Colombian Cartels and the the 90's - 00's Drug scene in Melbourne Australia for more inspiration.

For instance, there was a TV show called Underbelly in Australia which looked at the gang wars revolving around the production of various pills and drugs. Many killings and revenge killings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underbelly_(series_1) If you are thinking that the player starts off small, then Carl Williams in this show is a great example. Started as a driver for a gang ended up almost ruining their drug empire purely by undercutting them. Obviously he ended up dead, but the there is a lot that can be taken from his story and adapted.

The second series focused on the importation of heroin to Australia in the 70's, but their were politicians killed, Horse races fixed etc as well as the production of Marijuana locally and the buying off of local politicians and corrupted police forces. Tbh honest the second series is better but thats a personal choice.

There's been lots written about the Krays and The Richardsons.

Happy to give more information if you need it or point you in the right direction.

I agree with Suede. I would also ask that the game would be serious rather than cartoony. You should have the option to be very brutal and paranoid if you want. And what era will the game cover? Prohibition? The Las Vegas and Havana casino era? The modern era featuring drugs? Can you choose your gang's main ethnicity? Can you emulate Carlo Gambino, Albert Anastasia, or the fictional gang bosses Don Corleone or Tony Montana? How about Pablo Escobar?

It's nice to know that this game is being developed, but isn't 8% a little soon to be announcing said development? I'm 61 years old, and given how things usually go in game development, I will probably be old enough to retire by the time it comes out. Assuming that I live that long.

Grey Dog is a small company, and it seems that most new games from here take a looong time. Understandably so. Some new titles that we expect and gleefully anticipate have been in development for years and years. One title in particular I've just given up on.

Does Derek really want prospective buyers nagging him every few weeks or months for updates?

Responding to comments:
- Yes, the tone will be mostly serious, not cartoony really.
- The game won't focus on specific nationalities or ethnicity really, at least initially. The activities will be balanced to be fair, varied and solid.
- Era will be modern, with car theft, drugs, business fronts, petty crime, shakedowns, hacking, etc. I suppose down the road it could be adapted for different eras. The engine will be quite flexible.
- 8% development: Well, I develop and iterate fairly quickly. This won't take years. I'm thinking 4-6 months or so. The programming language I use is very RAD-based, so no 3 years dev time here.
- No need to nag me, i'll be updating here all the time, letting you guys know what's up with screens, feature additions/changes and sometimes nerdy stuff until you guys might beg me to stop doing so. I'd say at least 2-3 times a week i'll be posting here with diary entries.

Well this is a pleasant surprise. Will there be anything like the honor system in Red Dead 2? so many great mob stories involved having to tap dance around violence directed at police, it would be cool if there was a heavy response if you opted for an overly violent play style.

Also hoping there will be an-indepth political system. It would be cool to have the ability to bribe judges, influence elections, etc. Anything that gives some different avenues to dominating outside of brute force would be cool.

I agree, I would like the influence to build up over time over someone. I don't just want a bribe button with a price fee. I want to sound them out, decide whether they'd be useful and importantly, willing.

There will be a 'Respect' system where you build up Respect points over time and positive actions, and can use those points during the game for various things. It can even be a game goal if you set it that way.

Will Respect also influence your own family? For instance if you have low respect, its more likely that a member of your family becomes a rat or defects to another organization

Defections are definitely something that can happen. Rarely, but it can for sure.

This looks pretty interesting! I wonder if you'll be able to chose your ethnicity in this one? I do agree with some of the previous posters that I hope you focus more than the American mafia, looking into other mobs such as the various Russian Bratvas, the Latin American Cartels, the European underworld and the Yakuza, among many others.

Also, are you just focusing on organized crime or will there be interactions with street gangs as well?

Needless to say, I'm going to keep my eye one this!
