Default 1997: War of the Worlds

On the heels of the most controversial moment in the history of sports entertainment, the war between the two largest wrestling companies has grown only hotter. As familiar faces find new homes and new attitudes begin to emerge, the end of the century is about to ignite into a true War of the Worlds.

A few notes:
* We begin November 1997 week 2, the night after Survivor Series.
* We have sped up the timeline so that Neidhart, Davey, and Brian Adams are already out of the WWF.
* News will be through 2 sources. PWI for objective news and a company source for subjective news.
* This will be a competitive venture, not a cooperative one.
* Until further notice, Monday Night Raw will be live the night after PPVs and taped otherwise.
*Should it need to be said, given that we’re going to be in the attitude era we appreciate readers giving some leeway when it comes to suggestive and at times profane language so that we can be faithful to time period.

The show begins with a recap of Survivor Series from the night before and the most controversial moment in WWF history. It consists of still images with the voiceover calls of Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler

Grade: 85

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler welcome the audience to the show. They cover the shocking ending to last night’s Survivor Series but before they get too far into it, they’re interrupted by breaking glass.

Grade: 88

Stone Cold Steve Austin makes his way down to the ring, Intercontinental belt in hand, and snags a mic from ringside. He says now that he's the Intercontinental champion nothing is going to change. He's still going to whip people's ass, drink beer, and do what he wants when he wants and if anyone would like to try and stop him they can step up.

That is when a picture of the Rock appears on the Titantron. He's in the arena parking lot and he says that even a drunk jabroni can have his day in the sun so Stone Cold should be congratulated for winning the title last night but he's only renting it because that belt belongs to the Rock and sooner or later it'll be his again.

Austin says we don't have to wait and immediately leaves the ring headed to the parking lot, with a camera in tow. He gets there and spots the Rock about twenty feet away. When he makes a beeline, he's suddenly attacked by Kama and Dlo Brown.

Along with the Rock they beat Austin down, dragging him to a waiting car and dumping him in the trunk before slamming the lid. Kama and Dlo get in the car and drive off, while the Rock just smiles.

Grade: 85

Following the commercial break we see a replay of the Nation's ambush of Stone Cold and what appears to be his kidnapping.

Grade: 76

Quote:

Bart Gunn attempts to start the match on a fast note but the Sultan basically no-sells him for a few moments and then goes on the offense. He batters Gunn in the corner before hitting a quick Samoan Drop off an Irish Whip. He focuses on the back, and following a standing side kick to the face, locks in the Camel Clutch for the win.

Winner by Submission: The Sultan
Grade: 54

Jim Ross announces that next week a special interview will air here on RAW he will conduct with Vince McMahon. He says he expects it to be explosive and will discuss the events of the night before.

Grade: 75

Suddenly, the Titantron is taken over by an image of Paul Bearer with Kane looming behind him. Bearer warns the Undertaker that their patience is not unlimited. He has to face the truth and that means facing his brother, and if the Undertaker does not do so next week, there will be…hell…to pay.

Grade: 88

Quote:

To call this a mismatch is an understatement. Kurrigan dominates, following the Jackyl’s commands being shouted from ringside. After a few minutes of dominance he puts Holly down with a huge boot to the head.

Winner by Pinfall: Kurrigan
Grade: 40

We go to the DX locker room where they’re still celebrating from the night before but all the smiles go away when WWF Commissioner Slaughter enters the room.

Slaughter apologizes for interrupting but he thought perhaps it would be important for Triple H to get ready for his match. When Helmsley demands to know what he’s talking about Slaughter informs him that tonight in the main event he’ll be taking on Ken Shamrock. Slaughter leaves them and they all look at each other in silence.

Grade: 72

Instantly we’re taken backstage as the cameraman is sprinting to the scene. We find Vader pummeling Goldust in the hallway while even Luna looks worried and is staying clear. After what seems forever, a host of officials and security separate them. Vader isn’t done yet though. He doesn’t challenge Goldust as much as decree that next week they’ll finish this in the ring and he’ll teach him how to be a man.

Grade: 58

Jim Cornette comes down to the ring. The first thing he does is apologize to the Canadian crowd for what he calls the biggest travesty he’s ever seen in decades. He goes on to say that he’s come out during the so-called War Zone because someone has to speak up for professional wrestling. And as much as he’d like to say its all WCW and their garbage, there’s a good deal of garbage on this show as well. But he has the solution, and he’s going to introduce him right now. Ladies and gentlemen, professional wrestling’s new savior….Jeff Jarrett.

Grade: 55

Quote:

Jarrett controls the early going with old school wrestling, even eliciting a few boring chants. Funk breaks free and begins to hit several high energy spots which get the crowd more into it on his side, but he makes a mistake when he misses a dropkick from the top rope. Jarrett grabs him, and hits a Reverse Russian Legsweep for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Jeff Jarrett
Grade: 64

We cut back to the announcer’s table where Jerry Lawler says he just heard that next week the Undertaker will be here to answer Paul Bearer’s challenge and says he can’t wait to see it.

Grade: 75

A vignette of a sultry looking Sable lounging on the beach in a very appealing bathing suit is shown. She encourages the viewers to go a little longer tonight and stay tuned.

Grade: 68

Quote:

The match ebbs and flows through the first minutes as the Godwinns double team Hawk in the corner. He breaks free several times only to be drawn back but eventually he makes the tag to Animal who goes on to clean house, double clotheslining the Godwinns to the outside. He follows, as does Hawk and the two teams begin brawling as the referee counts to ten.

No Contest: Double Count Out
Grade: 68

Shawn Michaels and DX are walking backstage when Michael Cole tries to get a word with them. Shawn Michaels only smiles and says that it’s true what they say. Sometimes people ought to be careful for what they ask for. After that the quartet walk off, now looking very smug.

Grade: 85

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler hype the next big pay per view happening in four weeks. In Your House: Degeneration-X!

Grade: 89

Backstage we see Ken Shamrock looking focused as always walking down the corridor and headed to the ring. It’s Shamrock and Helmsley next!

Grade: 68

Quote:

Before the match starts, Commissioner Slaughter comes out and orders the
rest of DX to leave ringside. They protest but when he threatens to strip Michaels of both titles they get moving. The match begins and goes back and forth but Shamrock is focused on Triple H’s left leg. Triple H barely gets to the ropes the first time he’s put in the ankle lock but he gets to the outside. Shamrock follows and Triple H takes advantage putting him into the stairs. They both end up back in the ring and when Triple H attempts a running high knee, Shamrock catches him and drops him with a half spinebuster/half botch. He goes to put the ankle lock on again, and when Triple H is squirming in the middle of the ring he blatantly kicks Shamrock low causing a disqualification.

Winner by Disqualification: Ken Shamrock
Grade: 82

As soon as the bell rings, DX is sprinting down the ramp and into the ring. They all begin beating Shamrock down. As the bell continues to ring, DX isn't done with Shamrock. Eventually, Triple H and Chyna pull a barely conscious Shamrock up to his feet, each holding an arm. Michaels taunts him before quickly snapping some Sweet Chin Music into the face of the helpless Shamrock who lands in a heap. As the show goes off the air DX poses over him as the crowd and Jim Ross don't hesitate to display their disgust.

Grade: 75

Overall: 82

WCW Monday Nitro - Episode 113
Monday Week 2, November 1997 - Mid-South Coliseum, Memphis, TN – *Sold Out*

[WCW Monday Nitro Opens to "Last Week" where we see first the video at the movie premier of the contract signing between Sting and Hollywood Hulk Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship match at Starrcade. We then see "Later That Night" where Lex Luger is about to defeat Curt Hennig but Ric Flair interferes and punches Curt before chasing him out of the arena. We see Lex and Ric arguing as Luger is incensed.]

[Opening video montage is played, pyro is shot off and Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and the Living Legend Larry Zbyzsko welcome us to the historic Mid-South Coliseum for pro wrestling's #1 program, WCW Monday Nitro. Yes it is true, the match of the century will take place in six week's time at the Grand Daddy of Them All, Starrcade, as Sting will challenge Hollywood Hulk Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Title. But that is in six weeks, in 13 days war will happen at WCW's World War 3 and right now there are problems between the Nature Boy Ric Flair and the Total Package Lex Luger over Flair's obsession with getting revenge over Curt Hennig.

As a result, two matches have been signed - one for World War 3 as Ric Flair will challenge Curt Hennig for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship and the second match is our main event of this evening: Ric Flair versus Lex Luger.

But we kick things off on a jammed packed Nitro by going to the ring, it's a rematch from Halloween Havoc between Eddie Guerrero and WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Rey Mysterio Jr. ]

Grade: 80

============================

Quote:
Match #1: Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio Jr (C) for the WCW Cruiserweight Title

This is yet another fantastic match in the amazing series that these two have been on going back to 1996. It spans two commercials and opens Nitro going 17 minutes long. The story is Eddie injures Rey’s leg early on and every time he tries some high flying maneuver, the knee buckles. Miraculously, Rey’s heart will not let him give up and he hits some high flying maneuvers including the Frankensteiner but Eddie kicks out just before 3. Rey goes for it again but his knee buckles and he crashes to the mat with Eddie essentially delivering a powerbomb. Eddie places his feet on the ropes and the referee does not see it as Rey is counted down 1..2..3 and we have a new champion.

Winner and new WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Eddie Guerrero

[Following the match, Eddie leaves the ring gloating and celebrating. Rey, limping, looks incensed as Eddie has stolen this title back.

[In the ring is Barry Darsow as the music for Bill Goldberg begins to play. We start to see a longer entrance for the rookie and while the entrance begins video is shown of last week where Goldberg comes out with Steve McMichael's Super Bowl ring and costs Mongo the match. We are told that both men will be in World War 3 and the announcers speculate that they have so much bad blood that they could make that whole match about each other.]

Quote:
Match #2: Barry Darsow vs Bill Goldberg

Complete and utter domination by Goldberg. He basically destroys Darsow with some quick strikes, a spear and a jackhammer and the match is over in just over one minute.

Winner: Bill Goldberg

[Following the match, Goldberg simply holds up all ten fingers signifying that that was win number ten in his career....he's clearly on a streak.]

The Nitro Girls are dancing in the ring as Nitro returns. We get a highlight video of Raven's Flock and how Perry Saturn won the WCW World Television Title last week over Disco Unferno. We see the entire flock sitting at ringside as Disco comes out to take on the Crippler Chris Benoit.

Grade: 56

============================
Quote:
Match #3: Disco Inferno vs Chris Benoit

Disco tries to be competitve but he cannot get the flock out of his mind. Benoit is just too good and with the distraction of the flock, it's too much and soon the former TV champ is eating a diving head butt for the 1..2..3.

Winner: Chris Benoit

Grade: 56
============================
[Following the match, Disco goes over to Raven's flock yelling at Saturn and yelling at Raven. They are emotionless until Disco slaps Raven in the face. Suddenly he smiles sickly and the flock jump over the barricade. They swarm Disco and Raven himself climbs over watching this. He eventually drops Disco not once, not twice, but three times with the DDT on the arena floor. Raven can be heard "now, you feel my pain." as officials rush to help Disco who is unconscious.]

============================
Hour #2 kicks off with pyro as Tony and Mike welcome Bobby "the Brain" Heenan to the table. They begin to talk about our main event when the nWo music hits.

Out comes Bischoff, Hogan, Hall, Syxx, Hennig, Buff and Vincent. They are all smiles as they get into the ring and Bischoff has the mic.

Easy E says that yes the biggest match in the world has been signed as the nWo will finally stop playing around with that costume character come to life, Sting, and Hollywood will knock him back down to the gutter where he belongs. But that is six weeks from now, right now what matters is World War 3 and the nWo is ready to continue the roll that they've been on since they walked into this place. And Eric can promise one thing, the winner of the World War 3 match is a member of the nWo.

But thats not all...at World War 3, Curt Hennig will take apart that fossil Ric Flair but wait, there's more and he calls Scott to expand on that.
Scott says that not only will it be Scott Hall who will win the world war 3 match it is Scott who will do the nWo proud when he defends his WCW tag team titles against the Steiner Brothers...but he won't do it alone "because ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the nWo...KEVIN NASH!"

Nash comes out in a wheel chair being pushed by a busty bruenette model and she gives him a kiss on the cheek as he gets to the ring steps. He acts like that kiss has made him the incredible hulk and he stands on his feet while the nWo guys celebrate like its a miracle. Nash enters the ring and cuts a promo saying that the Outsiders are your WCW tag team champions (the crowd boos knowing that the Steiners are the champs) and Kevin Nash will, with all due respect to everyone here, be the one doing the nWo proud because it will be Big Sexy bringing home that championship match by winning World War 3. And Nash has a warning for The Giant..."big man, you want me? I'll see you in War and I'll crush your soul."

Finally, Hogan grabs the mic and starts saying it doesn't matter who in the nWo wins at World War 3 because this title is remaining in the nWo forever and a day. And it will stay that way at Starrcade because "Stink" isn't man enough to get the job done." The fact of the matter is the largest arms in the world rule professional wrestling, the nWo rules this business brah, and that will never end. And whatch......"

Suddenly lights go out in the arena and thunder and lightening sounds can be heard. The nWo start scanning the skies for Sting but he is nowhere to be found. All that we can see and hear are the thunder and light shows but Hogan looks thoroughly spooked as Nitro goes to commercial.

[Nitro returns to a music video set to DDP's theme "Self High Five" showing highlights of DDP over the last year (rejecting the nWo, the Diamond Cutter nailing everyone from out of nowhere and alot of footage of Page's feud with Macho Man Randy Savage). The video ends with DDP doing the Diamond Cutter hand sign with the crowd.]

Grade: 74

============================
[As the video ends Nitro returns to Ultimo Drago doing a flying cross body block from the top rope onto Alex Wright & La Parka. Chris Jericho is in the ring and runs from inside and vaults himself over onto the three men on the floor and Nitro has returned to a tag team match already in progress:

Quote:
Match #4: Alex Wright & La Parka vs Ultimo Dragon & Chris Jericho

This turns into a very good back and forth tag team match. The finish comes when Dragon is taken out and thrown to the floor. Jericho had taken control of the match and had just hit the Lionsault when Debra gets on the apron. Jericho is distracted and when he finally ignores her, and turns back to charge Wright, Parka throws a chair at Jericho as he runs dropping the youngster. With Jericho stunned, Wright rolls him up and grabs his tights. La Parker holds Dragon's legs as he tries to get back in as Wright gets the 1...2..3.

Winners: Alex Wright & La Parka

Grade: 59

===============================================

[Nitro returns and we see Mean Gene Okerlund at the Nitro set. With him is James J. Dillon of the WCW Executive Committee. Gene informs us that JJ asked for this time and Gene wants to know what this is all about. JJ says that “last night a travesty happened in the world of professional wrestling when grown men who act like children committed an unpardonable sin in this business and a good man got screwed over. Well their loss is WCW’s gain because early this morning, the WCW Executive Committee has reached out to Canada’s favorite son, a wrestling icon, Bret Hart and the committee has made him an offer to come to WCW where tradition is honore….”

Bischoff comes running out from the back and asks JJ who in the hell does he think he is? Bischoff says that he is the one that runs the day to day operations of WCW and not this stupid committee. Their duty is to advise but the one who controls the purse strings of this company is Eric Bischoff. And if Bret Hart is entering this turf…it will be as a member of the nWo because he is smart enough to see where the power lies. Bret Hart is a “kock out kinda guy” and he belongs in black and white and if he is getting signed it will be by Eric Bischoff, the president of this company, and it will be for the nWo and not WCW.

JJ and Bischoff bicker up the ramp as Gene tells us what a bombshell this: Bret Hart is a free agent and could he be headed this way? Gene tells us to stick around; the main event of Luger versus Ric Flair is next.

Grade: 92

===============================================
******COMMERCIAL BREAK*******
===============================================

[Nitro returns to a black and white promo by the nWo about Ric Flair. In it we see Hogan, Hall, Nash, Bischoff and Savage all dressed as fake Ric Flair’s with an overabundance of “woo’s” and they all proclaim their fear of Curt Hennig. The promo eventually ends with all of them bowing down to Curt who is literally standing on a pedestal raising the US title high.]

Grade: 83

============================
Quote:
Match #5: Ric Flair vs Lex Luger

Before the match begins, Ric gets on the mic and says to Luger that he doesn’t have a beef with Lex but he will not apologize for what he did last week. Flair promises to make Hennig’s life a living hell and if he has to go through friends to do that, he will. If Luger can’t stand that? Too bad. Luger responds by shoving Ric, Ric shoves back and the match is on.

This is a back and forth match with Flair trying to injure Luger’s leg and Luger trying to take out his back. Luger eventually gets control and starts to work on Ric’s back and gets several near falls but when he goes for the Torture Rack, Flair pokes him in the eye and the dirtiest player in the game takes over. He goes for the figure four but Luger uses his leg strength to power out and both men collide and tumble to the floor. As they are down on the floor out runs Savage and Hall and Nash. They start taking apart Luger as well as Flair. This brings out Buff and Hogan and Bischoff and as they hold both Luger and Flair in the ring, Hennig. The ref obviously throws this match out. ]

No Contest Due to nWo interference

Grade: 61
============================
[Post-match, Hogan and Hennig slap around Flair and Luger and gloat. When suddenly out runs DDP and the Giant and they have chairs. Behind them are the Steiners and they flood the ring and even the odds. The nWo and WCW fight and WCW gets control of the ring, Flair goes after Hennig but he is being restrained as the nWo back peddles. The cameras circle the rafters for Sting but he is not there but, for tonight in the Mid-South Coliseum, WCW is standing tall as Monday Nitro goes off the air.]

WCW is launching its own developmental company, WCW Carolinas, in 1998 to be ran by Les Thatcher and booked by Jody Hamilton. The local promotion will be owned and operated by WCW and will run in the Carolina region that was, for so many years, the hotbed of Jim Crockett Promotions. It will be a place where future stars of WCW and graduates of the Power Plant will go to continue to grow and mature as performers. WCW Carolinas will begin holding shows in February of 1998. WCW is already signing trainers, staff, and wrestlers for the new company.

Hulk Hogan's contract will expire in the spring of 1998 and there is expected to be interest from the WWF as well as in Japan. It can be argued that WCW is in a vastly different place than it certainly was in 1994 and even last year in 1996. Hogan has been the #1 heel in wrestling and has been the main focus of the shows but as the calendar turns to 1998, will Eric Bischoff decide that WCW no longer needs Hogan as much as they needed him before? And if so, what deal will WCW offer...and will he accept?

Starrcade will feature the conclusion of multiple feuds that have dominated 1997. Do not be surprised to see a legend or two take time off of the air after the "Grand Daddy of Them All" next month from the brand new MCI Center in Washington, D.C.

As the WWF heads towards 1998, there is a lot of meetings going on behind the scenes about the direction of the company. Obviously major storylines revolving around DX, Steve Austin, the Undertaker, etc will continue to carry the company but there are reportedly some inklings that they may tread into unknown territory with “adult themes” as one insider put it.

Wrestlemania XIV, scheduled for March in Boston, is already being plotted out with what one person called a big shock already planned.

Several characters may be “evolving” soon. One name being bantered about is Goldust who many feel has lost momentum with the current incarnation.

Mick Foley (Mankind) was absent this past Monday Night in what is being described as a protest concerning the ending of Survivor Series. It’s said that everyone from Vince McMahon down the line understood Foley’s position and allowed him to miss without repercussions. He was at the tapings for this week’s episode.

WWF recently expanded their PPV network to include Europe and Japan. As both WWF and WCW gear up, extra revenue streams have become very important.

WCW recently attempted to plant stories in the media about WWF having a supposed pro-**** sympathy. Several reporters who were expected to run with the story instead publicly denounced it, leading many in the public including the Anti-Defamation League to scold WCW for insensitivity.

Finally, the ratings are in. RAW scored a 13.36 while Nitro scored 15.06. Another win for WCW.

This is a lot of fun and certainly takes me back to the dial up days checking to see "the dirt" and spending hours downloading wrestler's theme music!

WCW Monday Nitro - Episode 114
Monday Week 3, November 1997 – The Crown Arena – Cincinnati, OH

[WCW Monday Nitro opens to Mean Gene Okerlund in the ring. He is standing with President of Turner Sports, Dr. Harvey Schiller, who informs him that he is here tonight in Cincinnati for two announcements both regarding the Bret Hart situation. The first announcement is that Eric Bischoff is correct in that he is President of WCW and has hiring powers. He is also correct that James J Dillon does not. But Harvey is Eric's boss and he got the approval of Ted Turner himself for WCW to go make a go of it for Bret Hart and it was Harvey Schiller who directed JJ and the WCW Executive Committee to reach out.

But Eric has a point and he is in charge of WCW and so, last Tuesday, Harvey allowed Eric to also reach out to Bret Hart for a counter argument presumably for the nWo and that brings us to the second announcement. Earlier this morning, WCW's Offices in Atlanta, received a fax from Bret Hart. It says:

"Alot has happened in my life over the last 8 days. And the love and respect that I have been shown by the wrestling industry and its fans has been overwhelming. My family and I thank everyone for their good thoughts and letters and well wishes. So it seems that the Hitman is the hottest property in professional wrestling? It seems both WCW and the nWo want the Excellence of Execution to join their ranks? Well..one of them will get their wish. Please inform the fans that I will be in attendance this Sunday at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan at World War 3. I will walk down to that ring and I will tell the world what my decision is.

See you in Motor City.
Bret"

The fans come alive, Harvey says now the world has one more reason to tune in this Sunday. Is Bret Hart WCW? Is he nWo? We will find out in Detroit.]

[Rather than go to the opening video montage, we go directly to the announce area where Tony, Larry and Mike are buzzing. Bret Hart will be in attendance this Sunday at World War 3 and will choose either WCW or the nWo to compete in? Amazing. Larry talks about how he has known Bret since Bret was a kid and how he believes in his heart Bret will do the right thing and Larry cant wait to see Bischoff's face when ATM Eric cant buy his way this time. Tony and Mike switch to tonight and tell us that Raven has called out Hot Rod Rowdy Rodd Piper, for what reason, we do not know but Raven will be here tonight to see if Piper answers the challenge. And they tell us that tonight Hollywood Hulk Hogan promises to be here to call out Sting. Nitro looks to be action packed so lets go to the ring with our opening contest featuring Bill Goldberg. ]

Quote:
[b]Match #1: Dave Taylor vs Bill Goldberg/B]

Taylor is able to get a couple minutes of wrestling out of Goldberg as he tries to counter the power of the former Atlanta Falcon but soon, like the 11 before him...Taylor eats a Spear and a Jackhammer.

Goldberg is 11-0

Winner: Bill Goldberg
Grade: 53

[Following the match, Mongo McMichael comes out and tells Goldberg that he is sick of the games between them. He wants a match with Goldberg and does not want to do it in a damned battle royal. Mongo demands Goldberg this Sunday One-On-One. Bill simply smirks and nods yes and this match is now on. ]

In the ring are two young kids named Matt and Jeff.]

Match #2: Harlem Heat vs Matt & Jeff

The two kids, we are told, hail from North Carolina and they wear funky outfits. Harlem Heat dont take them seriously at first but after the two show some high flying capabilities, Booker T and Stevie take over. Soon there is the Harlem Hangover from Booker T onto Matt for the 3 count but Harlem Heat look slightly impressed with the two young kids.

Winners: Harlem Heat

[We get a 1-800-Collect Road Report with Lee Marshall. He hopes everyone is having fun in Cincinnati, but he is north in Columbus at the Campus of The Ohio State University where tickets will go on sale for WCW's January Pay Per View - Souled Out. It will originate in January Week 3 1998 from the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus Ohio. Tickets go on sale THIS SATURDAY at the Jerome Schottenstein Center box office or at all ticket master locations and he asked the students here how to combat a weasel...they say their buckeyes will crack a weasel's skull.

"Thats your 1-800-Collect Road Report, I'm Lee Marshall...WCW Monday Nitro continues after this time out. Don't go anywhere."

[Nitro returns to a commercial of various WCW stars including DDP, Chris Benoit, The Giant, Lex Luger, Ric Flair, Rey Mysterio Jr, Booker T, and other WCW stars walking down the streets of Detroit. As they do we get nWo cut aways but each star talks about War. The match of destiny, the match that can change your life in an instant - World War 3. The winner receives a World Heavyweight Title match at SuperBrawl XVIII at the historic Cow Palace in February 1998. We see rival gangs fighting out and they are wearing WCW and nWo shirts.

Bischoff is seen high above everyone smirking and looks at the camera, "Are you ready for war?"

[In the ring, Eddie Guerrero is wearing his brand new t shirt. It says "Eddie Guerrero" in Mexican lettering on the front and "Whatever it takes" on the back. He mocks Rey Jr and says "get well soon, amigo" while laughing at how he stole the cruiserweight title. He talks about how WCW executives tried to make him wrestle Ultimo Dragon here tonight but after a brutal weekend of defending this belt in Mexico, he is spent. Instead Eddie believes in opportunity so he is going to give opportunity. He went to the WCW executive committee and proposed a compromise which they agreed to: Ultimo Dragon vs Dean Malenko. The winner faces Eddie for this belt this Sunday at World War 3.

This brings out Ultimo and Dean. Ultimo looks pissed cause this was supposed to be his championship bout. But what can he do? This match is on.]

Quote:
Match #3: Ultimo Dragon vs Dean Malenko

This a fantastic, even paced match that spawns through a commercial break. The story of the match is Dean's ground and pound vs Ultimo's highflying. Eventually, Ultimo misses with a guillotine leg drop and that allows Dean to lock in the Texas Cloverleaf and Ultimo has no choice but to submit.
Following the match, Dean and Eddie have an intense staredown as Eddie mock claps for Dean's victory. It will be Dean Maleknko vs Eddie Guerrero with the Cruiserweight Title on the line this Sunday on pay per view.
Winner: Dean Malenko

============================

Hour #2 kicks off with Raven in the ring corner. He talks about his disadvantaged youth and how miserbale things were and he had hoped that he would find salvation here in WCW but so far all he has found is miserable drunks like his father was. All he finds are old timers who dont know when to get the hell away. People who want to abuse those less fortunate than them and then blame the victim. People like Roddy Piper.

Raven used to think he was a kindred spirit with Piper but he sees him for the farce....

Piper's music hits and the Hot Rod is here on Nitro for the first time since Halloween Havoc. He walks right up to the ring even as the Flock appear at ringside and he gets in Raven's face.

Piper say people like Raven are whats wrong with this generation. They want everything handed to them without working for it and when it doesnt go their way, its someone elses fault. "I paid my dues, man. What have you ever done except whine and complain and have sycophants fight your battles for you".

Raven says that Piper has not been where Raven has been and he has not seen what Raven has seen. If he had, Piper would know suffering. And that is why Raven called him out here tonight...to know suffering. Piper responds by slapping Raven in the face which makes the mysterious one smile a sick smile.

That is the cue and the Flock, Sick Boy, Kidman, Lodi, et al, jump in the ring. They beat down Piper and hold him as Raven drops him with the DDT. Raven screams "now you feel my pain" as officals jump into the ring. Raven and his flock leave with Piper unconscious.]

[Nitro returns to a nWo video of Hall, Nash and Syxx touring Detroit. Nash takes his buddies to all his favorite hang outs. They talk about how Nash will take out the Giant in World War 3 and the guys pretend to have tension over what happens if one of them wins the match. In the end they hug it out as Nash, with Syxx and Hall leaning on him, says "Detroit..I'm coming home". "The preceeding announcement has been paid for by the New World Order.]

[Tony, Mike and Bobby officially welcome us to Hour #2. And they take us to footage shot during the commercial break. Piper, fresh from his beating, grabs a house mic and says "you want a war, punk, you got one. This Sunday...Detroit...I'll be there for a fight."

They tell us that apparently it is on but Raven's matches are unsanctioned in WCW. So it appears at World War 3 this Sunday there will be a fight.

They then run down the card:

  1. World War 3 Match - 60 men, 3 rings. Winner receives a Title match at SuperBrawl VIII in February
  2. Roddy Piper in a fight with Raven
  3. WCW United States Title Match: Ric Flair vs Curt Hennig of the nWo
  4. Cruiserweright title match: Dean Malenko challenges Eddie Guerrero
  5. Harlem Heat vs The Faces of the Fear for the right to challenge for the Tag belts at Starrcade
  6. Bill Goldberg will face off with Steve "Mongo" McMichael
  7. And the one everyone is talking about: Bret Hart chooses either WCW or the nWo.

But that is this Sunday. And Tony tells the fans that still to come tonight is The Giant against Vincent and remind us that Hollywood Hulk Hogan promises to call out Sting here tonight.

They then reveal that their opponent's show is already canned and in the bag and their main event is the degenerates against the Legion of Old. That cant compare to exciting WCW action like our next match: Chris Benoit versus Chris Jericho. ]

Grade: 80

Quote:
Match #4: Chris Benoit vs Chris Jericho

This is another terrific match up and both men work a strong style ground game. Eventually the intensity picks up and both competitors hit the floor. Jericho launches himself from the 2nd rope like a cannonball taking down Benoit. Back in the ring, Jericho hits a knee smash (the code breaker) for a two count. Benoit battles back and goes for the diving headbutt but Jericho rolls out of the way. Jericho hits the Lionsault and gets the 3 count for what has to be an upset.

Winner: Chris Jericho

[Following the match, Benoit looks angry but ultimately he shakes Jericho's hand. And the two leave with respect. while the announcers promote that this is how real up and coming stars do it in WCW.]

[Nitro returns and we see Mean Gene Okerlund at the Nitro set. He is standing with Curt Hennig of the nWo. Ric Flair has been barred from the building tonight and Hennig says that is for his own protection. See, this Sunday there is going to be a massacre and it will be when Curt Hennig puts down the old dog that is Ric Flair. Everyone thinks it was fear or insecurities that made Hennig turn on the Horsemen but its anything but. Curt Hennig is simply the embodiment of perfection in that ring, and he out grew playing with the kids of WCW. He is with the real big boys, the stars of this business, and that is the nWo 4-Life. And Ric will fade slowly away this Sunday...that is a promise.

Match #5: Chavo Guerrero & Juventud Guerrera vs Buff Bagwell and Scott Norton of the nWo

Scott Norton comes in and blasts both men and throws Juvie to the floor from a belly to belly that sends him over the top rope. He then plants Chavo with a spinebuster and Buff is tagged in to hit the block buster for the 3 count.

This isnt even a match at all. Giant gets ahold of Vincent and just throws him around the ring. It is all over in minutes as Giant says "this is for you, Kev" and Chokeslam's Vincent two times before the 3 count.

Winner: The Giant
Grade: 55

[Following the match, the nWo flood the ring. They try to get their before the finish but don't make it in time. Giant is smart enough to see this coming and he bails. He goes over the stands and up the fans to where DDP and Lex Luger are standing. They mock the nWo as they escape and leave. We then hear Hogan's music as the announcers tell us he will call out Sting when we come back. ]

[Nitro returns and Hogan is already in the ring screaming "where are you Sting?" Hogan calls Sting a coward. He says he is a sham. That he is afraid of Hollywood and doesn't want none of him at Starrcade. He demands Sting to come out. And suddenly he comes down from the rafters.

The nWo crowd the ring area but Hogan says let him in. The camera is to Sting's back as he walks into the ring, baseball bat in tow. He walks up to Hogan....and hands him the bat. Sting then gets on his back and lays down.

The fans the announcers figure it all out. It is another fake Sting who is laying there as Hollywood Hogan hits the weakest looking legdrop two times. Eric Bischoff counts as Hogan makes the cover...1...2..3.

The nWo sell it as Hogan has won this battle. The announcers call it for the b/s it is and wonder, for the second week in a row, where...is...Sting?

Nitro fades to black with the copyright 1997 as Hogan preens to the booing crowd having a big laugh. ]

The show begins with a recap of last week's show, focusing on Stone Cold Steve Austin being kidnapped by the Nation, Paul Bearer calling out the Undertaker, and DX's attack on Ken Shamrock.

Grade: 87

Backstage in the parking area, Ken Shamrock is pacing with a pipe in hand. Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler tell us he's waiting for DX to arrive and when they do all hell is going to break loose.

Grade: 75

Quote:

Savio knows he needs to get on Ahmed early and while he controls the match through the early going, Johnson takes over using his strength and after softening up Savio with a few power moves he hits the Pearl River Plunge for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Ahmed Johnson
Grade: 68

In the parking lot, a limo pulls up and before the doors open Shamrock is on the scene, bashing in windows with the pipe and denting the car with each hit. After a few moments we see officials on scene and right behind them police….with DX.

Michaels says they want to press charges and after a few tense moments, Shamrock concedes to the police to be handcuffed but promises DX he’ll be back as they taunt him and wave goodbye.

Grade: 72

We go to a pre-taped segment with Jim Cornette who gives his unfiltered opinions on the wrestling business. This week he spends his time badmouthing the ‘Geritol Generation’ of WCW and says Hogan’s biggest fear isn’t Sting, it’s the colonoscopy he’s three years overdue for. He goes on the plug the fact that the company used to stand for wrestling but now it’s wandering the desert led by a used car salesman.

Grade: 53

We see a small vignette of what's lead up to the match tonight between Vader and Goldust, stemming from Survivor Series, then last week's beat down.

Grade: 60

Quote:

Goldust spends most of his time dipping out of the ring, further enraging Vader who finally gives chase. Goldust slides back in and ambushes Vader. That works for a few minutes but Vader’s strength shows through and he begins pummeling Goldust in the corner. Luna gets onto the apron, after putting a black object on the apron in the opposite corner. When Vader and the referee are distracted by her Goldust retrieves the item, and when Vader turns to deal with him, Goldust sprays him across the eyes with what appears to be gold spray. When Vader covers his face, Goldust kicks him between the legs and hits a DDT then makes the cover. He ensures the referee can’t see Vader’s face and gets the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Goldust
Grade: 72

As Goldust and Luna quickly head away from the ring, Vader is rolling around, with his hands on his face. Officials and doctors arrive and begin treating him. He's overheard by the camera telling them he can't see.

Grade: 55

Backstage Michael Cole is standing by with DX. They have a good laugh about how they got out-thought Shamrock and got him arrested but the smiles fade when Cole asks them what they think about their match tonight with the Legion of Doom. Michaels asks what he’s talking about and Cole says Commissioner Slaughter told him about the match just a few moments before. DX blow their top and storm away.

Grade: 63

Jim Ross says that now we're going to see the interview he conducted with the owner of the World Wrestling Federation, Vince McMahon.

The Outlaws control the early minutes of the match working over Windham but when he makes the tag to Bradshaw things turn around and they get several near falls on the champs but when all four men are in the ring, Windham is slow in getting out, allowing Billy Gunn to hit a Fameasser on Bradshaw and Road Dogg quickly covers for the win.

Winners by Pinfall: New Age Outlaws
Grade: 71

The camera catches view of Sunny who is standing on the stage with a clipboard, and jotting something down as she watched the end of the match before turning around and exiting view.

Grade: 68

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawer talk about the Austin kidnapping. Lawler says the Rock told him that Kama and D'Lo just took Austin around the block and dropped him off. He's probably in some bar getting drunk. JR refutes that and says the Rock needs to come clean about what he did with Austin.

Grade: 88

Backstage, Farooq is furious, berating the Rock for his actions last week which were ordered behind Farooq's back. He's the leader, he gives the orders. He then demands to know where Kama and D'Lo are and the Rock says they're taking the scenic route but he's in contact with them every day and not to worry. Farooq is still steamed but says he better not let it happen again. When he leaves the Rock's expression changes to one of disgust.

Grade: 68

Quote:

You almost feed bad for the Headbangers. Kane decimates them both in quick fashion, choke slamming Mosh over the top rope to the floor below, then catching Thrasher with a big boot to the face. He then picks up Thrasher and delivers a Tombstone Piledriver for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Kane
Grade: 64

Paul Bearer gets in the ring and says it’s time for the Undertaker to accept his fate and face his bro….

He’s interrupted by the gong and the lights go out as the Undertaker’s entrance hits and he comes to the ring and immediately he’s nose to nose with Kane. Bearer demands to know if the Undertaker will fight Kane. Undertaker stares long and hard into the eyes of his brother, then slowly shakes his head. Bearer declares that if Undertaker won’t fight Kane, then Kane will take matters into his own hands. Kane suddenly grabs the Undertaker around the throat, but Undertaker grabs his arm and slowly pries it off. Then Kane suddenly hits a heavy left punch, and while Undertaker is staggered Kane again grabs him and delivers a huge choke slam. As Undertaker lays motionless, Bearer and Kane leave the ring, but when they get halfway up the ramp, Undertaker sits up and turns to stare them down.

Grade: 87

Backstage Sable is walking when Mankind comes up to her. She’s a little unsure until he tells her he just wanted to say how good her commercial was last week. She relaxes and thanks him but before she can reply more, Marc Mero shows up and yanks her away from Mankind before telling him to stay away from his woman.

He pulls her away, out of sight as Mankind tries to explain.

Grade: 73

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler talk excitedly about a big match that’s been signed for next week.

The Rock will take on Mankind!

Grade: 68

Non-Title Match

DX is in trouble from the opening bell at the hands of the WWF Tag Team Champions. They double team both DX members before Chyna and Rude come into play, distracting the LOD. DX controls the next several minutes but Animal makes the hot tag to Hawk and he begins cleaning house.

About this time the Godwinns come down to the ring and while the referee is busy with Animal and Triple H on the outside, Henry gets on the apron and whacks Hawk in the back of the head with an empty slop bucket. Hawk staggers forward right into Sweet Chin Music. Michaels makes the cover for the win.

Winners by Pinfall: Shawn Michaels and Triple H
Grade: 81

The LOD immediately regroup on the outside and then give chase to the Godwinns to the back. DX is all smiles in the ring until Commissioner Slaughter comes to the stage.

He says that they can enjoy tonight but at In Your House it may be a different story. The Undertaker refuses to fight Kane, that means he’s available and since Triple H needs an opponent that seems to work very nicely. But he hasn’t forgotten about Shawn Michaels. He will defend the WWF Championship against Ken Shamrock…in a fifteen foot high steel cage! DX predictably loses it over this announcement but as the show ends, Slaughter is all smiles.

WCW is planning on a overseas tour early in 1998 including a few big shows in the UK

According to sources, WCW is in many ways wanting to get through this weekend's World War 3 to get to Starrcade.

The current plan for Bret Hart is no matter what side he ends up on Sunday - he will be wrestling at Starrcade.

Rocco Rock was cut loose this week from his WCW deal due to showing up high as a kite at WCW Saturday Night.

WCW has re-branded their developmental system as WCW Mid Atlantic.

WWF is looking to expand their foreign influence in 1998 with an expanded TV lineup.

Many have noticed that there has been no mention of the Light Heavyweight tournament or title since Survivor Series. WWF has changed direction and is dropping the idea. Reportedly Vince McMahon doesn't want a second rate division against WCW's cruisers.

Several familiar faces will be returning to WWF TV in the coming months.

While everyone has been tight lipped, there are rumors flying for a "major" development at the Royal Rumble.

WWF has no plans for a developmental system at this time.
