I love Hunter Hearst Helmsley, he's great on the microphone, but it's his in-ring work that needs to improve a bit.

Thank you to everyone for your predictions/comments so far! Make sure to get them in if you haven't already, because this is a 24 Hour Prediction Warning.

WWF Monday Night RAW, January 1996, Week One
Attendance: 19,028 at MA TD Garden
Commentary Team: Jim Ross, Vince McMahon, & Jerry Lawler

Quote:

Welcome everyone to Monday Night RAW live from Boston, Massachusetts! The first RAW of 1996 kicks off with Bret Hart making his way down to the ring. Bret says that last week he sent a statement to Sycho Sid. Bret says that it doesn't matter if Sid has one man as an enforcer or an one hundred men army, Bret will always find a way to take Sid down. Bret says that he wants one more match with Sid, no bull crap with Arn Anderson, just a straight one on one match. Bret says that there is no better place to do it than at the Royal Rumble in two weeks!

Sycho Sid & Arn Anderson interrupt him before Bret can say anything else. Sid says that he doesn't give out title matches to anyone, whoever wants a title match has to earn it. Sid says that he will give Bret a WWF World Heavyweight Championship Match at the Royal Rumble if and only if he defeats Arn Anderson tonight! Bret accepts the challenge and says that Arn may have cost him one title match already, but he won't cost him another. Bret & Sid stare each other down as we go to commercials.

Quote:
w/ VS
Vader w/Jim Cornette vs Steve Corino
Vader was last seen at IYH: No Way Out where he defeated Adam Clarke. This match is nothing more than a squash match that Vader completely dominates. Vader finishes off Corino in just under five minutes after hitting him with the Vader Bomb.
WINNER: Vader

Quote:

After the match is over, Jim Cornette grabs a microphone. Cornette says that Vader has been nothing but dominant for the past two months he has been in the WWF. Cornette says that it's time for Vader to truly unleash his monsterous abilities. Cornette says that he has entered Vader into the Royal Rumble Match in two weeks! Cornette finishes by saying that Vader will wipe the floor with the twenty-nine other men in the tournament.

Quote:
VS
Rey Misterio vs Reno Riggins
Misterio was last seen on Superstars last week in a losing effort against Hunter Hearst Helmsley. This match is nothing more than a squash match that Misterio completely dominates. Misterio finishes off Riggins in just under five minutes after hitting him with the West Coast Pop.
WINNER: Rey Misterio

Quote:

After the match is over, Rey Misterio celebrates his win until...

Hunter Hearst Helmsley attacks him! Helmsley beats the living hell out of Misterio, even letting Mr. Perfect get some shots in. Helmsley eventually picks up Misterio and hits him with the Pedigree! Helmsley poses over the fallen body of Misterio as officials take Misterio away on a stretcher. Helmsley & Perfect then wait in the ring for Helmsley's match as we go to commercials.

RVD was last seen at IYH: No Way Out where he lost to Syxx after Syxx grabbed RVD's tights and rolled him up for the three. This match is a good match and the crowd is solidly behind RVD. RVD starts the match off by hitting Helmsley with a spinning heel kick. RVD rolls off the ropes with a rolling thunder and transitions it into a senton. RVD goes to the top rope and hits Helmsley with a diving elbow drop. RVD attempts a northern lights suplex, but Helmsley reverses it into a suplex. Helmsley picks up RVD and hits him with a powerbomb. Helmsley throws RVD off the ropes and hits him with a high knee. Helmsley bows to the crowd and stomps RVD in the head. The match comes to an end when Helmsley attempts the Pedigree, but RVD reverses it into a back body drop! RVD goes to the top rope, but before he can hit the Five Star Frog Splash...

Syxx runs down to the ring and trips RVD up! Helmsley tries taking advantage of this and rushes RVD, but RVD quickly dodges it and Helmsley runs right into Syxx! RVD rolls up Helmsley and gets the three!
WINNER: Rob Van Dam

Quote:

After a short commercial break, Harlem Heat make their way down to the ring for their open challenge. After waiting for a bit...

The Bodydonnas make their way to the ring to accept the challenge! The Bodydonnas run into the ring to go after Harlem Heat, but Booker T & Stevie Ray quickly roll out of the ring. Harlem Heat soon get back into the ring and referee Tim White calls for the bell.

Quote:

WWF World Tag Team Championship Match

Harlem Heat (C) vs The Bodydonnas w/Sunny
Both of these teams are coming off of wins at IYH: No Way Out with The Bodydonnas defeating The Samoan Studs & Harlem Heat defeating The Steiners. This match is a good match and the crowd is solidly behind The Bodydonnas. Candido & Booker start the match off with Candido hitting a dropkick. Candido throws Booker off the ropes and hits him with a back body drop. Candido attempts a powerbomb, but Booker punches Candido and wiggles out of it. Booker then hits Candido with a suplex. Booker tags out to Stevie Ray, who hits Candido with a spinebuster. Stevie picks up Candido and hits him with a military press slam. Stevie attempts a powerslam, but Candido wiggles out and hits Stevie with a dropkick. The match comes to an end when Candido goes to the top rope and hits Stevie with the New Jersey Jam! Before Candido can cover Stevie...

The New Age Outlaws run down to the ring and attack Candido! Referee Tim White calls for the bell and gives the win to The Bodydonnas via DQ. Gunn hits Candido with the Famouser and Road Dogg hits Bagwell with the Pumphandle Drop. The NAO stand tall over The Bodydonnas as we go to commercials.
WINNERS: The Bodydonnas

Quote:

We're back from commercials and we cut to Bret Hart backstage. Bret says that tonight he will destroy Arn Anderson. Bret says that it's about time to prove to everyone that Arn Anderson is nothing more than an enforcer in name only. Bret says that he'll defeat Arn tonight and will finally win back his WWF World Heavyweight Championship at the Royal Rumble. Bret finishes by saying that Sid cannot compete with him without help from someone like Arn Anderson.

Quote:

Arn runs off the ropes and hits Bret with a knee drop. Arn picks up Bret and hits him with a stalling suplex, holding him up for a solid twelve seconds. Arn attempts the Spinning Spinebuster, but Bret reverses it into a tornado DDT. Bret hits Arn with a pendulum backbreaker before going to the second rope and hitting Arn with a diving pointed elbow drop. Bret tries locking in the Sharpshooter, but Arn reaches for the ropes. Suddenly, Arn hits Bret with a massive lariat. Arn picks up Bret and hits him with a swinging neckbreaker. The match comes to an end when Arn attempts the Spinning Spinebuster, but Bret reverses it into a DDT! Before Bret can lock in the Sharpshooter...

Wrestling Observer Newsletter, January 1996, Week One
By: Dave Meltzer

Quote:

The biggest news story this week is that WCW have hired three former WWF talents. WCW have hired Rex King & Steven Doll, otherwise known as Well Dunn, and Mike Rotunda, better known as Irwin R. Schyster. Well Dunn will probably be used to make up the numbers in the tag division, while Rotunda should be a good midcard to upper midcard hand.
Quote:

The WWF have bought the NWA United States Tag Team Championship from the NWA. WCW held the belts for a while before they eventually sold the belts back to the NWA. The WWF approached the NWA with a lucrative offer and the NWA accepted. Time will tell if they use it as a new tag belt or just another relic of history.
Quote:

The Monday Night War continues to be won by WWF Monday Night RAW. RAW drew 16.8 million viewers worldwide and about 5.4 million viewers domestically. Meanwhile, WCW Monday Nitro drew 15.2 million viewers worldwide and about 4.8 million viewers domestically.
Quote:

The war in Mexico continues to be won by CMLL. CMLL got a 6.04 for Sin Limite de Tiempo this week, which was headlined by Negro Casas defeating El Hijo del Santo in an amazing match. Meanwhile, AAA got a 2.50 for AAA TV, which was headlined by Satanico defeating Misterioso by DQ in a decent match.
Quote:
That's all for this week's edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Make sure to come back next week for more wrestling news.
