World Championship Wrestling
Date: Week 2 March 1987
Announcers: Tony Schiavone & David Crockett
Venue: Shrine Auditorium (CA)
Attendance: 2,518

Quote:
Ron Simmons vs. Bobby Jaggers

The big Simmons, a former All-American in college football, takes it to the rugged Bobby Jaggers in an equally matched, hard-hitting opening affair. In the end, despite his experience, Jaggers was no match for Simmons power and athleticism.

Victor: Ron Simmons
Grade: (E+)
Quote:
Interview

Next, Tony Schiavone and his glorious mustache, hosted TV champion Tully Blanchard and his manager JJ Dillon about tonight’s title defense against former horsemen member, Ole Anderson. Tully says he wasn’t worried about Ole--stating he’s washed up and old news. Dillon goes on to remark that they have the toughest Anderson family member in Arn.

Grade: (C-)
Quote:
Mike Rotundo vs. Ivan Koloff w/ Vladimir Petrov

Young Mike Rotundo was more than a handful for the unsuspecting Koloff here. The tides changed when Petrov tripped Rotundo allowing Koloff to take command of the match and ultimately securing the pin following a Russian Neckbreaker.

Winner: Ivan Koloff
Grade: (C-)

Interview

After the match, Tony welcomed “Uncle” Ivan and his protege, the hulking Vladimir Petrov. Tony asks the Russian duo about costing Nikita the United States championship last week. Ivan says that Nikita has gone soft, embracing Dusty Rhodes and America as a whole.

Grade: (C-)
Quote:
Rocky King vs. Big Bubba Rogers w/ Jim Cornette

Standard squash match here. Bubba has his way with Rocky King in the ring, as Cornette talks trash to Schiavone and David Crockett on the outside.

Winner: Big Bubba Rogers
Grade: (D+)
Quote:
The Mulkey Brothers vs. Kevin Sullivan & The Barbarian

The new pairing of Sullivan and Barbarian demonstrate very little trouble decimating the poor Mulkey Brothers….squash!

Winners: Sullivan & Barbarian
Grade: (D)
Quote:
Interview

Tony hosts the brand new United States champion, “Captain Redneck” Dick Murdoch. Schiavone asks Murdoch about the interference in his match last week by Ivan Koloff...Murdoch says he won the title fair and square and challenges anyone who says otherwise to take the title away from him!

Grade: (C-)
Quote:
Number 1 Contender to US Tag Team Championship: The MOD Squad vs. The Midnight Express w/ Jim Cornette

The right to face US Tag champs Ron Garvin and Barry Windham where on the line in this one. Unfortunately, Basher and Spike never posed a real threat to the Eaton and Condrey here. The experience, chemistry and Cornette’s guidance were simply too strong and as Spike went down to the Rocket Launcher.

Winners: The Midnight Express
Grade: (C-)
Quote:
Interview

Following a break, Tony hosts US Tag Team Champions, Barry Windham and Ron Garvin about new contenders The Midnight Express. Garvin and Windham say Cornette is a bag of hot air and they are not intimidated by the cocky duo.

Grade: (D+)
Quote:
“The Boogie Woogie Man” Jimmy Valiant vs. Teijo Khan w/ Paul Jones

The announce team touched upon the long, well documented history between Paul Jones and Valiant here, but it mattered very little in the contest. The fun-loving Valiant defeated the bigger, slower Khan with a roll up.

Winner: Jimmy Valiant
Grade: (D-)
Quote:
Interview

Back from a break and Schiavone is working the podium again, this time with NWA World Tag Team title holders, Rick Rude and Manny Fernandez alongside their manager, Paul Jones. Jones complains that the he just received word that his men are booked to defend their titles at Clash of the Champions against the Rock n’ Roll Express. He feels they should be given the night off in preparation of the upcoming Crockett Cup tournament, where he expects the NWA to roll out the red carpet for the champs.

Grade: (D)
Quote:
World Television Championship: Ole Anderson vs. Tully Blanchard (c) w/ JJ Dillon

15 minute TV time limit set for this title defense, and Blanchard did his best to use every minute of it making Ole chase him around the ring. As Ole got increasingly more irate that Blanchard wouldn’t “stand and fight like a man.” Eventually, Ole does get his hands on Blanchard and pounds away with a series of stiff stomps. Ole ratchets a snug hammerlock and Tully as nowhere to run as the time limit is declared. Ole stands fuming as Tully and Dillon run to the back.

Winner: Time Limit Draw
Grade: (C-)
Quote:
Interview

Tony welcomes NWA President Jim Crockett and NWA World Heavyweight champion, Ric Flair. Flair says it doesn’t matter who the NWA throws at him--he’ll take them all on! Crockett reveals his challenger is none other than “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin who appears behind Flair and takes it to “the Nature Boy” as the program goes off the air with Garvin tossing Flair around the ring.

Prediction Contest Update

Couple of thoughts:

-I know that the time limit draw really factored into people's predictions...but that's JCP for ya!
-Lots of people predicted higher caliber opponents for Flair at the Clash so I hope no one is too disappointed in "Gorgeous" Jimmy...
-This was the first 2 hour WCW. Admittedly there was some filler on the show. It's going to take a bit I think for me to get the roster where I want it and enough programs running that make show filled out properly.
-As always, I'm interested to know what people thought of the show, feedback always welcome.

I'm thinking a new edition of the Observer with the next prediction card to go up within the next 24 hours.

Thanks for stopping by/tuning in!

March Week 3 1987
JCP News
-Perhaps the biggest JCP news this week stems from the company's relationship with the NWA. With Crockett clearly set on national expansion, it seems that Jim as used his position as NWA president to repeal some long-standing bylaws of the organization. This week the NWA have officially repealed the bordering and territorial laws that have earmarked the organization for decades. While other members are unhappy with Crockett's repealing of these long-standing laws, the feeling is that JCP is fundamental to the survival of the smaller NWA promotions and they have no choice other than to simply live with it. Crockett contends he wants to see some of smaller regional organizations stay alive, he simply wants to compete with McMahon. It will be interesting to see if he can do both.

-Crockett continued to lock up key roster members over the past few weeks to written contracts. It's understood that both Road Warriors (and Paul Ellering), Nikita Koloff, Rick Rude and Arn Anderson have all inked deals recently. No word on specific terms of those deals at this time.

-Backstage, it is said that Crockett recently made a "major signing" with "name recognition and instant, credible championship contender." The pool of these types of available talents feels shallow to me, so I'm interested to see if this name can live up to the hype I'm hearing. I'm told to expect the debut at the Clash event.

-Pez Whatley has been released from company. Management felt that his drug issues have made him a liability in the ring and with many boys feeling that he was "unsafe." Hopefully Whatley can clean up.

Everyone will always be let down by Jimmy Jam.

On a serious note. Another good show. Flair and Jimmy should have a decent enough match at Clash.

I can't even think of a big name that's free at the start of the mod off the top of my head. Steamboat? I think his contract is nearly over in WWF.

Looking forward to the next show.

I almost went with Jimmy Jam, because it did seem like you are running with that feud. But I thought that, with this being JCP and all, that could stall a little and be slow built to a later show, which is why I went the route of just someone to have a really good match with Flair but ultimately lose.

I don't remember, did Genadi do his weird thing where some of the WWF's guys are on PPA deals? Because if so, then I'm calling the big star as Piper or Roberts.

Good choice with Jimmy Garvin. He's probably [depending on the mod] over in the Mid-South, so he'll pull a great match in Texas against his opponent.

My first thought upon the announcement was the Freebirds would get the Horsemen in a Steel Cage at some point.

I have to think we'll see someone from the AWA, however, I'm not sure who would come over "as a big name" in '87. Curt Henning?

As for my choice, I worked on the assumption that the announced pick would be on the card somewhere, hence why I chose Ron Simmons.

Couple of thoughts:

-Nice to know that I didn't turn off half my audience with Jimmy Jam. I felt the need to continue the feud, much like Ole and the Super Powers.
-Regarding the surprise, I'll only say this for the time being. He is set by Genadi as available and classifies as at lead "recognizable or higher" in the US at the start of the mod without any fiddling with the data on my part.

...With that, on to the next prediction card! Remember, to be eligible to win, you must predict on at least 2 episodes of WCW and the Clash event.

Tully Blanchard
RNR Express
Super Powers
Johnny Ace - Laurenaitis Family, unite!
Road Warriors - Now that they're sticking with JCP, I look for them to start getting a "Road Warrior" push
Terminator - I think you could potentially do something with the Third Olsen Twin here. In some of my past JCP '87 games, I actually found him a bit of success by making a face painted trio of he and the POP, but you could have something completely different in store for him.
Flair and Anderson - Non-title makes me figure that Barry and Ron will drop this match to the much, much more over leaders of the Horsemen.
Bonus: Dusty
