Default Shane McMahon's WCW

“I now own WCW!”

Shane McMahon had proclaimed this to the stunned millions of viewers watching at home. Although it would turn out to be just another WWF storyline that would bomb, Shane McMahon owning the competition could have been the greatest storyline ever – even greater than the New World Order. In reality though, six months went by, WCW closed and it was never heard of again minus the few ‘hilarious’ potshots at it.

Originally though, WCW was supposed to be it’s own entity underneath the WWF banner. Unfortunately, they couldn’t’ find an hour long spot on a network for it to air.

In this diary: what if they did? What if they found an hour long spot on Fox Sports every Saturday night? How would WCW, with it’s flagship show Saturday Nitro, do underneath a completely brand new climate where they would compliment rather than rival the competition?

Welcome to Shane McMahon’s WCW.

Due to Time Warner contracts, the number of star players is minimal. However, this means that the WCW’s new ideas of a younger generation of superstars being at the top of WCW could now be remotely fulfilled.

Here are the current employees of WCW in order of their pushes:

MAIN EVENT
Booker T
Diamond Dallas Page

UPPER MIDCARD
Billy Kidman
Buff Bagwell
Chris Kanyon
Chuck Palumbo
Hugh Morrus
Lance Storm
Mike Awesome

WCW Saturday Nitro – 12th May 2001

The inaugural WCW Saturday Nitro kicked off with: “Here Comes The Money”. The crowd went crazy as the WCW Chairman: Shane McMahon made his way down to the ring. Shane McMahon claimed that today was a new day in WCW, a day where WCW was due to come up and kick the WWF right in the ass. He says that the roster is made up of the younger guys and says that it gives them the forum to show off their talents. Then Shane hyped about the first pay per view of this era: “Conviction” and mentioned how there will be a NEW United States Champion at the pay per view. Booker T has been stripped due to how a person can’t be World and US champ at the same time (like Goldberg) was and proclaimed there will be a tournament to determine the new champion started May 26th.

Quote:
Buff Bagwell vs. Chris Kanyon
The opening contest saw two potentially strong contenders for the United States Championship. The match saw Chris Kanyon beating down Buff Bagwell and taunting the crowd as well. Bagwell sold the assault, getting the crowd’s sympathy. The match ended when Kanyon deliberately whipped Bagwell into referee Charles Robinson. Robinson went down. Kanyon went to the outside and grabbed something from under the ring: a pair of brass knuckles. He put them on, blasted Bagwell with them. Buff, already unconscious, bounced from the ropes right into a Flatliner. The referee got up slowly and made the pin: ONE!!! TWO!!! But Robinson notices Kanyon’s brass knuckles and disqualifies him!
Winner By DQ: Buff Bagwell (4:48)
After the match, Kanyon flatlined Robinson before going back to work on Bagwell. After several stomps, Kanyon taunts the crowd as we go to commercial.
Backstage, the first acquisition of WCW: Terri Runnels meets up with Diamond Dallas Page, who is getting out of his car. She questions DDP about having to team up with Booker T tonight and how surely he’s the number one contender to the belt. DDP dismisses anything about being the number one contender for now and says how he and Booker must concentrate on the tag team match later on.

Backstage with Team Canada’s Mike Awesome, Lance Storm and Elix Skipper. They state how tonight they must defeat Palumbo and O’ Haire for the Tag Team Championships and end a curse of WCW of how there has never been a pair of Tag Champions that are both Canadian.

Quote:
WCW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
Chuck Palumbo & Sean O’ Haire © vs. Lance Storm & Mike Awesome

Scott Hudson hypes about how this is the first championship defence since Shane McMahon acquisitioned World Championship Wrestling. The match was a straight-forward typical tag team match, where Storm and Awesome put Palumbo into isolation away from his tag partner. Things boomed when Palumbo finally got the tag to O’ Haire. O’ Haire flew up with some spectacular lariats. When Storm went to ambush O’ Haire from behind, Palumbo tackled Storm and they went trickling to the outside. With Awesome on the ground, Sean made his way to the top rope. About to do the Seanton Bomb, Skipper runs down and tries to interfere – but he gets punched down. Sean does his finisher and immediately pins: ONE!!! TWO!!! THREE!!!
Winners and Still Champions: Chuck Palumbo & Sean O’ Haire (6:45)
A highlight reel played hyping up the WCW Cruiserweight division. Being dubbed as revolutionary, Scott Hudson and Arn Anderson talked about how Shane Helms will defend his belt next week on Saturday Nitro.

Quote:
Billy Kidman & Jason Jett vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr & Mike Sanders
This match was an appetiser for the Cruiserweight division, featuring three former champions and up-and-coming rookie Jason Jett. The format of a tag team match broke down very quickly as the spotfest of crazy moves and suicide dives began. This was topped by Billy Kidman doing his “Kidmankaze” Shooting Star Press to the outside, The ending came when all four executed their finishers on each other. Starting with Mike Sanders doing his move on Jason Jett, Billy Kidman did a Kid Crusher followed by a shooting star press on Mike Sanders. Chavo grabbed hold of Kidman and did a Tornado DDT. Jason Jett came back and clotheslined Chavo to the outside. Then he did his amazing: "Crash Landing” finisher on Sanders to wrap it up for a pin.
Winners: Billy Kidman & Jason Jett (5:52)
Backstage in Shane McMahon’s office – Team Canada are complaining that they got screwed against Palumbo & O’ Haire as “they’re cheating American scum”. Shane McMahon tells them to shut up. He grants them a rematch next week. But he gives the fact that this is their third shot at them – therefore it will be the final chance that Mike Awesome and Lance Storm has against them.

Terri interviews Booker T backstage. She mentions how his tag team partner Diamond Dallas Page is the man who people are saying will be the new contender to his championship. Booker T says that if Diamond Dallas Page wants the title shot, then he can have it. But for now – he wants to concentrate on his match next.

Quote:
MAIN EVENT
Booker T & Diamond Dallas Page vs. Mark Jindrak & Johnny Stamboli

Evidently, the first old WCW character to bite the dust is Johnny The Bull – who is now known as Johnny Stamboli. Throughout the match, Booker and Page worked like a cohesive unit, tagging back and forth and thwarting any efforts of Jindrak or Stamboli to do anything dramatic. The closest the opponents got to succeeding was Stamboli and Page clotheslining each other at the same time. They crawled to their respective corners and got the tags. Booker was able to dominate, doing an axe kick on both opponents before pinning them for the win.
Winners: Booker T & Diamond Dallas Page (4:38)
Scott Hudson and Arn Anderson celebrate how Booker T and Diamond Dallas Page work very well as a team. Just as they say that, DDP enters the ring and does a DIAMOND CUTTER ON BOOKER T!!! The crowd begin to boo as DDP does his diamond symbol over Booker. The commentators question what the hell is going on as the inaugural Saturday Nitro goes off the air.

The 12th of May edition of Saturday Nitro was watched by 1,826,782.

I like this diary so far, it makes you wonder what would have happened if Shane really did continue WCW.

WCW Saturday Nitro – 19th May 2001

Earlier today: Hugh Morrus is talking with a member of WCW personnel about what happened in the main event last week. He says that he “can’t believe it and is disgusted with DDP’s actions”. Unfortunately for him, Diamond Dallas Page is behind him when he says that. Morrus and Page get into a war of words before a big brawl, which is separated by the referees.

We’re live and only 22 days away from the first ever pay per view underneath the Shane McMahon administration: WCW Conviction. Commentators: Scott Hudson and Arn Anderson hype how tonight’s main event has just been made: Diamond Dallas Page vs. Hugh Morrus. Also tonight: Shane McMahon announces the brackets to the United States tournament that starts next week. Plus – which is in fact right now – Lance Storm and Mike Awesome get their last chance at WCW Tag Team gold.

Quote:
WCW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
Chuck Palumbo & Sean O’ Haire © vs. Lance Storm & Mike Awesome

This is the tag team rematch from last week (and the 26th March edition of Nitro). It is the final opportunity for Mike Awesome and Lance Storm to win the titles. So much so, it caused Storm and Awesome to cheat, using tactics like getting O’ Haire distracted before double stomping or choking Palumbo. This played out a lot like last week, except O’ Haire was tagged in much earlier than what Team Canada would’ve wanted him to. The ending came when Mike Awesome went to clothesline Palumbo. Chuck ducked though and Mike accidentally hit Storm! Storm went rolling to the outside. Palumbo did his Jungle Kick on Awesome before O’ Haire went up top for the Seanton Bomb. O’ Haire then pinned: ONE!!! TWO!!! THREE!!!
Winners and Still Champions: Chuck Palumbo & Sean O’ Haire (9:55)
Backstage with Lance Storm and Mike Awesome. They are arguing with each other over the result of the tag match. Lance Storm blames Mike Awesome’s stupid mistake and subsequent pinfall to be the blame. He then states to Mike: “What you did out there was very American. If you don’t start showing your new-found Canadian heritage next week, you’re out of Team Canada”. Awesome is then left alone, looking worried.

Terri Runnels is with Shane Helms. She asks him about how his music career has been going. He states that since splitting from 3 Count, he has been mega successful, particularly using the time between Turner’s WCW to McMahon’s WCW to tour about and meet with the fans. Then he turns his turns his attentions to tonight’s Cruiserweight title match and states how nothing will stop him from being the best Cruiserweight champion ever.

Quote:
WCW CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Shane Helms © vs. Jamie Noble

Time for Cruiserweight action! This was fast paced stuff between Shane Helms and Jamie Noble. Jamie, sporting more of a rougher look than his previous attire of blue trunks, took it to Helms early – trying an array of submission moves and suplexes. However the complexion of the doubt changed when Noble went for a cross body, only to be dropkicked while jumping. Several aerial moves followed. After a sequence of near-moves, Helms eventually did the “Nightmare on Helms Street” followed by the Vertebreaker for the victory.
Winner and Still Champion: Shane Helms (4:48)
After the match however, Evan Karagias and Shannon Moore charged down to the ring and attacked Shane Helms! Beating him down with several kicks, they put on the exclamation mark with a top rope body splash by Shannon while Evan pinned him down. They taunted the crowd as it cut to commercial.
Terri Runnels catches up with Shannon Moore and Evan Karagias after the attack. Moore and Karagias say that Shane Helms should remember where his roots belong, and how because of him and his “rock star attitude” – Three Count have been booted off their record label. Now they’re looking for revenge.

It’s time for the Shawn and Stacy Show! Stacy Keibler comes out and teases the audience with sexual references before she introduces the “Mecca Of Manhood” Shawn Stasiak. Stasiak comes out to a very decent entrance and takes the microphone. He tells the crowd to: “Shut up, listen and learn”. Then he goes on about how he beat up Bam Bam Bigelow so bad, Shane McMahon didn’t sign him in fear of “his ugly face cracking up the lenses on the cameras.” He goes on about how World Championship Wrestling marvels at such a good looking guy like him and they beg him to “eliminate every ugly person in the back”. With that, it’s match time…

Quote:
Yang vs. Shawn “The Star” Stasiak
Shawn Stasiak underestimated his opponent at first. The initials slapping around and posing was met with several kicks and some impressive moves by the Cruiserweight. Yang’s offence however peaked by reversing an atomic drop to a bulldog. Stasiak beat down on Yang for a moment or two. Yang looked like he was going in for a second wave of attacks when Stacy distracted Yang on the apron. Dancing around, Yang was distracted enough for Stasiak to come from behind to execute the Hangman’s Noose. “The Star” pinned him for the easy victory.
Winner: Shawn Stasiak (1:33)
Shane McMahon comes from the back to announce the brackets of the United States tournament. According to Shane McMahon: “In WCW, we do things differently! We don’t draw names out of a hat; we make the most interesting matches possible instead”. He has compiled four matches: Mike Awesome versus Sean O’ Haire because of the recent tag team war and Lance Storm versus Billy Kidman because of the athleticism. “If both members of Team Canada happen to win, they’ll face off in the semi-finals!” Then he creates Shawn Stasiak versus Hugh Morrus to see what the result will be. And finally, Buff Bagwell is in a match against Chris Kanyon to see if Bagwell can get his revenge on Kanyon over last week’s escapades.

Terri Runnels is about to interview Kanyon when Bagwell suddenly ambushes him. They get into a brawl that is quickly separated by officials. Revenge can’t come too soon apparently.

It is main event time. Just as Diamond Dallas Page is walking down the corridor to make his way to the ring, Terri tries to get an interview. She askes: “DDP! Why did you do what you did to Booker T last week?” as DDP walks towards her. However, it is unsuccessful interview #2 of the night for Terri as DDP merely walks by her.

Quote:
MAIN EVENT
Hugh Morrus vs. Diamond Dallas Page

The main event saw Morrus and Page immediately get into a brawl. It leaked onto the outside, where Morrus was successful in pushing Page back to the steel guardrail, but not in whipping Page to the steel steps. The whip was reversed and Morrus collided horrifically into him. Page got him back into the ring and began an array of left and rights on his opponent. After a sleeper hold though, the crowd got Morrus back into the action. Elbowing himself out of the hold, he charged to the ropes and knocked Page down several times. Then he was able to do a strong powerslam. This equalled in going to the top rope for the No Laughing Matter. With his back turned though, Page got up and low blowed him. He signalled for the Diamond Cutter (to many boos). But before he could get anywhere, the referee called for the bell as Booker T charged in and began to attack DDP.
Winner By Disqualification: Diamond Dallas Page (5:32)
Booker attacked him with lefts and rights. He was about to go for the Book End when DDP pushed him out of the way and got out of the ring. Page looked smug as he walked up the ramp. Booker remained in the ring and stared down at his nemesis as Saturday Nitro ended transmission for another week.
The 19th of May edition of Saturday Nitro was watched by 2,052,476 (up by 225,694).

I have to say I love the way you are doing the shows and results as a whole. I'd actually like to get together with you for a split diary somewhere down the line if you are interested. I try to write shows somewhat similar but my matches always end up a bit longer...still I try the some format TYPe I guess.

Anyways, I see Chris Kanyon as a big Main Event player down the line hopefully as well as Lance Storm. One of the two which I see the first United States Champion.

WCW Saturday Nitro – 26th May 2001

We’re taped from New York City for another edition of WCW Saturday Nitro. With WCW Conviction is 15 days away, commentators Scott Hudson and Arn Anderson hype that tonight will see the beginning of the tournament to crown the United States Championship – the finals of which are at Conviction. Also tonight: Diamond Dallas Page has apparently requested some interview time, hopefully he’ll use it to explain his recent actions. Hudson then interrupts Anderson during a speech saying that they must cut to some breaking news in the back.

In the back, the parking lot to be more precise, it appears a car has crashed into a wall. Police cars and fire engines surround the scene. The cause: Chris Kanyon. Kanyon tries to explain to them how the breaks suddenly cut out. The police ignore him and get him to do a Breathalyser test. Hudson replies: “Looks like Chris Kanyon isn’t having a good day”!

Quote:
WCW UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
Billy Kidman vs. Lance Storm

Lance Storm isn’t accompanied to the ring by any other members of Team Canada for this match against Kidman. It was a fast-paced contest, with several Cruiserweight-esque sequences of chain wrestling. Kidman was eventually able to get Storm out of the ring with an impressive hurricarana. Kidman climbed the turnbuckle and leapt off. Somehow, Storm caught him and charged him into the steel turnbuckle post. Kidman held onto his back in pain as he was rolled back into the ring. For a majority of the rest of the match, Storm worked on the back with several backbreakers and submission moves. Kidman valiantly fought back with a Kid Crusher, but his back was hurting too much when we went up for the Shooting Star Press. Storm intercepted him and did a superplex. He then followed it up with the Maple Leaf, giving Kidman no choice but to submit.
Winner: Lance Storm (7:50)
Stacy Keibler is out, so that can only mean one thing: it’s time for the Shawn and Stacy Show! She introduces Shawn out just like she did last week. Shawn “The Star” Stasiak makes his impressive entrance before getting on the microphone. He says that tonight, in order to reach his destiny of the US title; he must face the epitome of the fat, greasy, disgusting man in Hugh Morrus. He compared Hugh Morrus to Bam Bam Bigelow. Then he topped it off by saying: “The only difference is that Bigelow has more class than Hugh Morrus”.

Quote:
WCW UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
Hugh Morrus vs. Shawn “The Star” Stasiak

Shawn Stasiak tried to attack earlier on, but his attempts at a simply body slam failed in what he would blame on Morrus being “too fat and ugly”. Morrus beat down Stasiak, particularly with rapid clubbing shots in the corner. He whipped him to another corner and did a huge body splash. Stasiak fell down to the floor. Immediately Morrus went up for the No Laughing Matter, which cued Stacy to get up on the apron and try her moves. Distracting the referee and Morrus, she danced around. She attempted to throw the hairspray to Stasiak, but Morrus caught it!!! He gave it to the referee. While the referee went to put the spray away, Stasiak suddenly grabbed a pair of brass knucks from his trunks and punched Morrus with them. Immediately he pinned Morrus: ONE!!! TWO!!! THREE!!! Stasiak wins!!!
Winner: Shawn “The Star” Stasiak (3:46)
In the backstage area, Shannon Moore and Evan Karagias are interviewed by Terri Runnels. They explain that they have spoken to Shane McMahon, and while their original wish for a handicap match wasn’t fulfilled, they have made a match for the pay per view. The match will be Shane Helms vs. Evan Karagias vs. Shannon Moore for the WCW Cruiserweight title. But that’s not all, they challenge Shane Helms to “put the microphone where his mouth is” in a Battle Of The Bands contest next week on Saturday Nitro.

Backstage, Lance Storm and Elix Skipper are speaking to Mike Awesome, who is off-screen. They tell him his match is next and the world is ready to see a new Mike Awesome.

After the commercial break, fans are expecting to hear Mike Awesome’s theme music. What they get though is the Canadian National Anthem. With Lance Storm and Elix Skipper at his side, Mike Awesome comes out in a mountie costume!!! Awesome gets into the ring, grabs a microphone and cuts a quick promo on Sean O’ Haire – saying: “aboot” a lot for some reason. Sean’s music cues and with Chuck Palumbo, they walk down to the ring ready for the next match.

Quote:
WCW UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
Sean O’ Haire vs. “The Mountie” Mike Awesome

Immediately, Awesome and O’ Haire lay into each other with several left and rights. Awesome gains momentum after raising his foot when he gets whipped into the turnbuckle. He begins an impressive amount of offence, doing moves like a powerslam to get near falls. Sean came back into the match though eventually with several lariats. He tried to finish things off when he did a fireman’s carry into a DDT. However when he tried to pin, Elix Skipper got onto the apron and distracted the referee. Lance Storm ran in to interfere, but was intercepted by Chuck Palumbo and his Jungle Kick. Palumbo then ran over to Skipper and knocked him off the apron before going back to the outside. In the ring, Haire made his way to the top rope and did his impressive Seanton Bomb. He goes for the pin and for the forth time in four straight WCW shows: Sean O’ Haire pins Mike Awesome.
Winner: Sean O’ Haire (5:27)
Quote:
WCW UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
Buff Bagwell vs. Chris Kanyon

The final match of the evening is a rematch from two weeks ago and the chance for Buff Bagwell to get his revenge. Early on Bagwell dominated Kanyon, getting the crowd’s support with techniques like punching Kanyon in the corner and posing to the crowd. He went for a swinging neckbreaker, however Kanyon did a clothesline. Kanyon then taunted the crowd before he began to attack Bagwell. He did several innovative moves like the Electric Chair, but he couldn’t get the pinfall. Kanyon then went for the Flatliner, but Bagwell elbowed out of the move. Chris went to clothesline Bagwell, but knocked over referee Mickey Jay instead. Kanyon went to his trunks and just like Stasiak earlier on, he pulled out some brass knucks. Unfortunately for him, his hand slips and Bagwell catches him. Bagwell punches Kanyon with the knucks. Kanyon then sways about as Buff climbs the turnbuckle and flies off with the Buff Blockbuster. Mickey Jay recovers to make the pinfall – and Buff Bagwell wins!!!
Winner: Buff Bagwell (6:39)
Back from the commercial, Chris Kanyon is with Terri Runnels backstage. Drinking some coffee – Terri asks him about what happened in the match with his hand slipping. Kanyon says that there’s a conspiracy against him and that somebody is making him have a really bad day. He takes a sip of his coffee, but it’s so foul he spits it out! Unfortunately for him, he spits it out inadvertently in the direction of The Wall! The Wall stares angrily at him. Kanyon tries to calm him down, but in the end he kicks The Wall in the groin and runs away very quickly!

“Yo! It’s me! It’s me! It’s D-D-P!” The theme music brings out Diamond Dallas Page. He gets into the ring and runs through his “you love me, you hate me, you’ll never forget me lines”. Then he gives the background information on what he did to Booker T – attacking him after a tag team match with the motivation of getting a World Title shot. He does state though that there’s so many inexperienced guys here, he was getting the shot anyway. The reason why he did what he did was because he is so sick of being so close to being the top dog, but yet being so far. He states that in 1999 when he was the World Champion, they were all talking about Ric Flair. He states that in 2000 when he was the World Champion, they were all talking about Hulk Hogan’s fights against Russo and Bischoff. “I am sick of being in the background, some kind of transitional champion!” He says that third time is the charm, because in 2001 – there is nobody in WCW that can be a bigger talking point when he is the champion. That’s when he addresses Booker T. He proceeds to challenge Booker T for the World Title shot at WCW Conviction. “Don’t hate the player, hate the game” brings out the WCW World Champion: Booker T to massive cheers from the crowd. Booker T and DDP get into a stare down before Booker grabs the microphone. “You know DDP, I was willing to give you a title shot as a friend. But if you want the title shot as the enemy, that’s even better. I accept your challenge to Conviction. You’ve lit a fire under my belly and there’s no way in hell you’re going to be able to put it out!” Suddenly, the duo start to punch each other back and forth. Booker gets the upper hand, whipping Page to the ropes. He was going for the Harlem Sidekick, Page pulls the brakes though by grabbing the rope and going to the outside. Just like last week, we end with Page ****ily smiling at Booker from the ramp-way as Booker looks down at him – holding his WCW World Title up in the air with pride.

The 26th of May edition of Saturday Nitro was watched by 1,846,343 (down by 206,133).

I'm loving it man. Three shows in and I'm already hooked. The writing format is what I'm interested in. You make great shows without getting TOO detailed, and still have enough to keep everyone entertained.

This is a fun easy read. I hope you stick with this for awhile. You are managing to do what I can never do and that is stick with a smallish roster. Eventually going to be able to do that.
