Default The GDS RTL League: Sign-up/Discussion Thread

The GDS Forums Wrestling Spirit II League—Sign-up and Discussion Thread
(as presented by ShadowedFlames)

OK, I'm going to get the ball rolling on this. Any other info can be found in the WS2 Discussion Forum at the top of the main page; this thread is going to be for sign-ups and discussion about how this system works (or lack thereof), improvement suggestions, late registration for future seasons, etc.

There's at least three or four other people who seem interested in this, so I'm going to open the gate for people who want in. I'll start with the rules and guidelines I'm working with, so everyone knows coming in what I have in mind.

OFFICIAL GUIDELINE LIST FOR THE LEAGUE

I. GAME ENGINE
The League is run using the Wrestling Spirit II game, version 1.2. The League Director has purchased a fully licensed copy of the game, which allows for exhibition matches to take place (such as League matches). The database used is the default CornellVerse database, modified to include promotions, wrestlers, moves, personalized movesets, and relationships for League members as appropriate.

II. INITIAL CHARACTER CREATION

1) Initial Stats
a) Characters created at start of Season 1: All stats will be set to a value of zero (0). A list of all available stats that can be upgraded—regardless of how useful they will be in the League—will be provided in a future post.
b) Characters created after start of Season 1: The player will receive in-game funds equivalent to the average winnings of all players from each previous season. The player can then spend this money as if he/she had acquired them through normal means.

2) Initial Moveset
a) Assigning of initial moves: Based on the info presented for the wrestler in question, a default movelist will be made for the character. This list will be determined by the style of wrestler, the size, and whether any specific moves have been requested. Note that some moves require a minimum "stat" to use, and thus may not be available at the start.
b) Assigning of signature/finishing moves: When first entering the League, a character may have one "signature" move (a named move which the character uses to great effect, or as a rare finisher) and one finishing move (also named and which is their primary method for ending a match). These moves will have the requirements set to zero (0) in all categories to ensure that the move is in use, and also be assigned to be a "trademark move" of the wrestler using it (mainly for "flavor" purposes).

3) Restrictions on Moveset
a) Player input: Players may suggest moves to be entered into their character's movesets, keeping in mind that the possible stat requirements may make the move unavailable to begin with. Changes to a moveset (with the exception of purchasing new signatures/finishers) can only be done once per season, and no later than halfway through said season. This restriction is in effect due to the fact that altering a moveset is the most time-consuming portion of the character creation or altering process.
b) Limit on signature and finishing maneuvers: At the most during a character's tenure in the League, they may have a maximum of three (3) finishing moves and ten (10) signature moves at any one time. This is for ease of database maintenance and also to keep the database running smoothly. If a player takes either a fourth finishing move or an eleventh signature move, he or she must choose a move in the same category to discard.

4) In-game avatars
a) Not a necessity: Players are not expected to provide a picture to use for their character. While it would look good and certainly help the Director's sanity, it is not necessary. The Director may ask who the player would like to use for their character, and attempt to make the avatar himself (or seek more experienced help in that department).
b) Size: For those people who wish to submit their own avatars, the size of the picture should be 150 pixels by 150 pixels. Larger pictures can be shrunk to meet the needs and still retain quality, but smaller pictures are not recommended. Any larger pictures, especially of real-world wrestlers, can be used for the player's webpage (see below).
c) Usage: It is the intent of the Director to have a webpage available for each player that will denote all current League information such as record, cash available, current stats, current popularity, and so forth. Avatars selected can be used to add a personal touch to each player's page, and also will help the Director not be bored from routinely seeing the wireframe character on a blue background. An example for the player the Director intends to enter into the game can be found here.

Once all of the steps above have been completed (namely, when the League Director has entered everything into the program and has a webpage set up for each player), the character is ready to enter the League and try to become champion!

III. LEAGUE GUIDELINES AND RULES

1) Conferences and Divisions: This will be based on the number of entrants.

2) Tournament Playoff: Based on the number of entrants, the top records in the League will face off in an elimination-style tournament until only one remains, as the League Champion for the Season.

3) Season Standings: In the event of identical records, the tie will be broken in the following order:
a) Head to Head: If the wrestlers have fought each other, whoever has won the match (or series, if a divisional opponent) will have the advantage. If more than two people are tied, records against all wrestlers tied for that position will be looked at, if available, with the best record winning the tie-breaker.
b) Divisional Record: In the event that a) above is unable to break the tie, the next step is to compare divisional records of the tied individuals. Whoever has the better divisional record shall have the advantage.
c) Match Rating: If both a) and b) are unable to break a tie, the next step is to look at the average match rating throughout the season. Whoever has the highest average match rating shall have the advantage.
d) Seasonal Earnings: If a) through c) above fail to break a tie, the final check that shall be made is the amount of money earned by that wrestler in the current season, with the highest earner winning the tiebreaker.
e) Playoff: If methods a) through d) above fail to break the tie, a one-match "playoff" shall be held, with the winner claiming the advantage under the guidelines of section a) above. If more than one person is tied, a round-robin style format will be used to determine who claims the advantage under the same guidelines listed above.

IV. SCHEDULING, REGULAR SEASON

1) Schedules: This will largely be based on the number of entrants. The current plan is for a schedule to consist of no fewer than ten (10) matches per player, in a round-robin style.

2) Match Order and Region Schedule: Depending on the number of weeks in a season, the Director will randomly draw a number of regions equal to the number of weeks the season will run. Currently, there are no plans for a region to be used twice in a single season. After an appropriate number of regions have been drawn, the Director will then arrange the order so that it would make sense for a company to travel from one locale to the other in a civilized order. (Thus, no Japan to Europe to Mexico and back to Europe again trips.) Match order is determined by the combined popularity of the wrestlers involved; lowest total is the opening match, highest total is the main event. Ties are broken by difference between the characters' popularities, from most different to least different.

3) Type of match: There are five types of singles match available in this game: normal, two out of three falls, cage, hardcore, and first blood. There is a 5% chance that any given match will have one of the latter three stipulations attached to it; this amount may vary in certain parts of the world. Two out of three falls is reserved solely for the post-season playoffs. (See below)

4) Rules of the Match: Each region of the world will have its' own quirks on how a match is played out. This will allow for a slightly different dynamic in each area to add to the sense that each area of the world does things differently. Below are the guidelines for each major area:
a) United States: Will have an American style crowd (which will often try to rally behind the faces or taunt the heels). Referee bumps are allowed. Match will be a "Sports-Entertainment" style in order to pacify the short attention spans of the average American wrestling fan. Chances of a specialty match increase to 10% instead of 5%.
b) Canada: Referee bumps are allowed. The match may be stopped due to excessive blood loss. All matches here will be a "normal" style match that is neither too fast nor too slow, which suits the traditional Canadian wrestling audience just fine.
c) Mexico: Referee bumps are allowed. Moves listed as martinetes (typically piledrivers, brainbusters, and the like) are illegal and will cause an immediate disqualification (unless the ref is knocked out). All matches here will be "spot monkey" type matches, which are the fastest-paced matches available and tend to lead to quick finishes from out of nowhere (a la lucha libre rules).
d) Japan: Rules will be adhered to strictly; the referee will call for the bell if you use too many illegal moves. Referee bumps are allowed. The match style is a Strong style match, which are more drawn out and tend to take longer because of the lengthy wearing-down period, and is most well-known in Japanese puroresu wrestling.
e) United Kingdom: Stoppages for blood loss are enforced. Matches are held in a "normal" style, much like the Canadian style. However, referee bumps are not allowed, due to a union agreement made by the League.
f) Europe: Not only are referee bumps not allowed (for the same reason as listed above), but the rules are also adhered to strictly, so heels may want to watch their step when in one of the three European areas. To counteract this, special-type matches have a 20% chance of occurring on European soil, which eliminates the DQ possibility. Matches held here are in the Old School style of wearing out an opponent so that a finisher will often be enough to win.

5) Changes in popularity: After a match has been concluded, a wrestler's popularity will change depending on the rating of the match, as well as the result. The higher the match rating, the higher the popularity increases, and vice versa. Winning a match will also increase a character's popularity. The length of a match will also have a factor in the change of popularity, as does the amount of offense each participant has. All of these changes will be handled by the League Director "behind the scenes" in between shows. The formula used is one created by the Director and may be disseminated if asked properly.

6) Match Earnings: In order to keep things relatively simple, match earnings will be kept on the low side of the spectrum. Specifically: the purse for any given match will be $250, plus the current popularity of all workers involved. From this total, the winner will earn 75% of the purse, the loser 25%. (As an example: if both wrestlers are at a popularity of 25% in the region, 250 + 25 + 25 = $300. 75% of 300 = $225 to the winner, 25% of 300 = $75 to the loser.)
a) Match of the Night Bonus: The highest-ranking match of each week will receive "Match of the Night" honors. Matches so designated will earn a bonus of 1 to 25% to each wrestler's earnings depending on the rating of the match in question. In the event that more than one match receives the same rating, the Director will take several factors into account before picking one of those matches to earn the MotN award.

7) Improving stats: In order to improve their statistics, each wrestler may buy training in a stat at the cost of the winnings they have earned. Increasing from 0% to 1% costs $10, and each point beyond that costs $10 more than the previous point. (Thus, 1% to 2% is $20, 2% to 3% is $30, 3% to 4% is $40. To go from 1% to 4%, you would need a total of $90.) It costs over $50,000 to advance a single stat from 0 to 100, and any seasons after the first would see the base purse prize increase to compensate for the higher costs.

8) Specialty Items: As documented before, all wrestlers will start with one signature move and one finisher that are considered "free" moves. Wrestlers may purchase up to two other finishers and up to nine other signature moves using their winnings, and may also purchase the services of a manager for an entire season. Signature moves cost $400 each, while finishers cost $1,000 each. Managers cost $3,000 per season of employment. Upon purchase, the handler can tell the Director what the name of the new move is, what sort of move it is, and whether it's just a move they use frequently, a set-up move for a finisher, or if the move could possibly end a match if used. The director will then find a base move in the database, copy said move, and alter the copy to fit the specifications requested. The same general rule applies for finishing moves. Some examples are provided below.
a) Player One spends $400 to create a signature move he calls Immolation. This is a Death Valley Driver that he uses as a set-up move, but has been known to end matches with it.
b) Player Three spends $400 to create a signature move he calls the Sick Kick. This is essentially a higher-speed version of the superkick, and may occasionally force the wrestler to jump to make greater impact. This move cannot end matches, as it is usually the set-up for a submission finisher.
c) Player Two, deciding that his current finisher (a reverse double underhook facebuster) hasn't helped him win matches lately, elects to spend $1,000 on a new finisher. Deciding on a suspended STF (the Muta lock) and calling it the Longest Night, the input for that move is complete.
d) Player Four, tired of going 2-12 when matches have been generally going in his favor, saves up the cash to purchase the services of a manager for the following season. After giving the manager a name and a brief description, the manager is inserted into the database for the following season. After the playoffs of said season, the manager leaves Player Four's employ and must be purchased again to continue service. (Memo to the League Director: Make certain to set a character's default manager to this person when the time comes so they can be properly accounted for in matches.)

9) Turnaround time: The Director of the league (namely, myself) expects to have a week of the league simulated and written up every week, including any behind the scenes work such as popularity changes. This may be altered due to weather, natural disasters, emergency circumstances, job-related incidents (of which the first three examples listed are often related), equipment malfunctions, duties to other projects, and so forth. The League Director will attempt to give due notice prior to any such events, if he is able to. The plan is to have one update per week, with a typical season (regular and post-season combined) lasting no more than four months for a ten-match regular season (10 weeks + 4 playoff weeks + 1-2 week "off-season" for maintenance and editing of the database)

V. SCHEDULING, POST-SEASON/"PLAYOFFS"

1) Match Location: All post-season matches will be held in what is called the "Virtual Arena" in-game. This location takes the highest amount of popularity a character has in the game world and uses that as the baseline for starting energy in their match. This is used in the playoffs to help simulate that when it comes to do or die, the more well-known workers seem to have a better knack for getting the job done.

2) Changes in Popularity: Post-season matches do not count for changes in character popularity in the game world.

3) Match Purses: Post-season matches do not have a monetary purse attached to them.

4) Style of Match: All playoff matches, regardless of the style of tournament used, shall be contested under best two out of three falls rules as a "regular" match.

5) Match Order: Match order shall be determined by the League Director, and shall not be random for playoff cards.

6) Turnaround Time: As noted in section IV, part 9), turnaround time will remain at a week per round, unless dictated otherwise on the league recap page. If a time is noted on the league recap page, that time takes precedence over the standard rule.

VI: AUDIENCE/PLAYER PARTICIPATION

1) As someone once quipped, "this is a wrestling-based RPG." While true to a point, no roleplays (or RPs) need to be written for your character. They would have no effect on the game, and so are unnecessary. If you wish to write one for fun, you're welcome to; just be advised that it will not alter the results in any way.

2) During the course of the season, a season-long prediction contest shall be run by the League Director, who will also participate in the guise of League fan columnist Tori Montgomery. Correct predictions are worth one point apiece unless noted otherwise (typically in the post-season). The participant with the most correct predictions will be allowed to alter the divisions as he or she so chooses for the following season (if applicable)
a) Predictions from all participants (with the exception of the League Director—see below) may be changed up to the time at which the results are posted. Prediction standings shall use the last "official" predictions made by a player to determine points scored for the round.
b) NOTE: The Director will never simulate a week of the League prior to making prediction picks, as to do otherwise would ruin the spirit of the game. The Director will post his predictions on the forums prior to simulating the week's matches, so that his picks are rendered official and can not be changed later to prevent foul play.

3) This is meant as a fun diversion, and so insult wars, flaming, and other negative behaviors will not be tolerated. We are all mature here; there is no need for any sort of negative action to ruin the fun for everyone else. Talking a little smack is acceptable, as long as it doesn't get out of hand and doesn't become personal. After all, this is a wrestling-based game and talking smack has always been part of the business.

4) Handlers are expected to keep abreast of their current earnings and dictate where to distribute winnings/points at least once or twice a season. The more often you check, the more say you'll be able to have on your character's development, as even a few points difference in a stat could be a game-breaker. For that reason, it is highly suggested that all players at least keep tabs on their character's cash balances and plan to distribute points accordingly.

5) Handlers who have been inactive for an entire season will have their character(s) removed from active competition during the following post-season break. Any money that their characters may have acquired will be reduced by half as a further penalty in case they return to the game at a later date. Characters belonging to the League Director are exempt from this requirement, and other exemptions of this nature are solely at the discretion of management.

VII. BETWEEN SEASONS

1) Because little enjoyment can be had during downtime, the Director will attempt to expedite all between-season changes so that the following season of the league may begin in a prompt manner. The projected turnaround time for making post-season changes to abilities, popularity, and any other changes is two weeks, though this may be changed at the whim of the Director. When possible, the Director will attempt to work on some of the off-season changes during the season itself, in order to expedite the process.

2) END OF THE SEASON AWARDS: At the end of the playoffs, various awards will be handed out by the Director. These include:
a) Playoff Wrestler Award: Everyone who made the playoffs will receive $50 to allocate or save as they see fit.
b) Divisional Champions Award: Should the number of participants allow a multi-divisional system, the division champions will earn an additional $50 on top of the "Playoff Wrestler" bonus to allocate or save as they deem fit.
c) Entertainer of the Season Award: The wrestler with the highest average match rating will earn a $50 bonus to allocate or save as they see fit. If more than one wrestler ties for this award, then each shall receive the full bonus.
d) Upset of the Season: This award will be given to the wrestler who starts the match with a lower amount of popularity (and thus energy) than his opponent, and still manages to pull out the win. The greatest difference in popularity at the time of the match will be the main decider of this award; tiebreakers will include match rating, length of match, and offensive rating. The winner of this award will receive $100 to allocate or save as they deem fit.
e) Match of the Season: A match must first qualify as Match of the Night to be eligible for this award. The director will examine all of the yearly MotN winners and choose one to be the Match of the Season. All participants in that match will receive a bonus of $200 to save or allocate as they deem fit.
f) Notes on prize amounts: These may increase in later seasons to better reflect the rising costs of stat increases.

3) After each season, all participants will receive a sum of ten (10) attribute points to add into their statistics. Handlers may assign these points for free, in any areas of their choosing, with only one restriction: a handler may not put more than five (5) points into any one stat in this manner each post-season. These free points expire at the end of the "preseason," specifically at time of deadline for week one training. Characters created after season one to not get retroactive free points, as the influx of money they receive at time of creation makes up for this.

4) All wrestlers making the playoffs will receive a minimum of one (1) point to be added to their Wrestling Spirit statistic. The further into the playoffs one goes, the more Spirit points they shall receive. The League champion shall always receive ten (10) Spirit points, and the runner-up shall always receive eight (8). The remainder will be determined by format of the tournament, number of entrants, and round in which elimination occurred. This information will be provided at the end of the postseason, and said points will be added during the off-season. Because of the importance of the Wrestling Spirit stat (which is used to aid a wrestler's chances of kicking out of a pin or not succumbing to a submission hold), this is the only way this stat can be improved. In the event of a smaller field of players, these totals may be altered as appropriate to fit the current scenario.

5) When there are more people willing to be in the League than can be reasonably accommodated to stay true to the planned turnaround time, a "replacement" system shall be instituted, in which the wrestlers with the worst records will "sit out" the following season to undergo further training to be ready to return the following season. An equal number of replacements will be brought in from the list of reserves. Should the League ever reach this point, the Director will create the necessary rules to handle this situation.

VIII. PUBLIC DISCLOSURE

1) Popularity levels of a character in all regions of the game world will be considered public information, and posted in the match line-up for that specific week and locale. The Director may provide all of this information as a spreadsheet for public viewing, if enough people ask.

2) Also considered public information is a character's win-loss record, typical finishing maneuvers, average match rating, and any League accolades won during his or her career in the League. If possible, the Director will create the necessary pages to convey this information.

3) A character's statistics that define how he/she is in the ring are not considered public records and so will not be openly displayed.
a) Those interested in having the data to run matches similar to the League on their personal computers for fun should contact the League Director privately. Please note that "exhibition" matches, which all League matches are considered in-game, cannot be run on the demo version of Wrestling Spirit II.
b) The current plan is for each handler to have a separate web page which details current information on stats, funds available, etc. Communication on how to improve the character via stat distribution should be handled via the GDS forums' PM feature.

4) All questions should be directed to the League Director, who will answer them as best as he can. This is best done via private message or via AIM.

Still awake after all of that? Good, the application is to follow.

As promised, here's the sample application. As a filled out version will likely exceed the character limit for a PM on the GDS forums, please post your applications in this thread. If there are any questions, either post it in the thread or shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can do to help.

Yea, the bios ****e. Taking everything you know about the character away and then trying to describe it proved rather difficult. Image is Walter van Cleer(I think that's the name), in the CVerse. Was the Arrows image made for the GDSVerse.

Character Name: Shawn Arrows
Short Name: Arrows
Gender: Male
Birth Month: June
Birth Year: 1977

Bio: Despite seeming like the typical independant spot monkey, people don't tend to see Arrows in the same light. Most likely because he's been using the style for fifteen years. With age finally starting to catch up to him, it's only a matter of time now until he'll either have to show his actual wrestling ability or step out of the ring.

Modified my set up move (which was a spear variable) as to not detract from Db's set up move. Probably just me, but I feel like (for example) Batista using the spear detracts from Edge's spear, since it leads to different outcomes. So, without further ado, I present ...

Character Name: Maxx Skabb
Short Name: Skabb
Gender: Male
Birth Month: February
Birth Year: 1982

Bio: Maxwell Sabers is an intimidating force, standing just over 6'8" and weighing close to 300 lbs. of scarred and tattooed flesh, the man takes psychotic to a whole new level. Fairly unrefined in the artistic assets of wrestling, Maxx goes to the ring to do what he does best, punish people with brute strength and brawling techniques. He plays up the convicted felon angle quite well, as he has in his life been a convicted felon, spending 4 years in Orange County Correctional Facility in upstate New York on bogus manslaughter charges.

It was here that his childhood love of wrestling was sparked, as he spent a great deal of time with infamous local wrestler Jason "Violent Tendencies" Osbourne, who was sent to prison on assault and battery charges, when he hit a fan with a chair. The two bonded quickly, and upon the reversal of his sentencing, Max decided to try to rebuild his life by becoming a wrestler. He now spends most of his time travelling up and down the eastern seaboard, wrestling in local promotions to hone his craft, while scaring fans with his lunatic in an orange jumpsuit routine.

Well, since it seems to be the thing to do, I'll reserve this spot here. Still working out the finer details of what I'm going to do, but I'm definitely leaning towards being the cheatingest heel in all the world.

All the above reserved spots have been added to the list. Plenty of spots still open--the cutoff is 16 at the moment, which I feel is a good upper limit for a season. >NOTE TO IER: if you want to bring in some avatars, be my guest. (That reminds me that I really need to get back to the Effverse work, too...)

Me too. The last part of this semester was insane for me. That and rewriting bios and adjusting stats is super boring lol.

I was just thinking that there should probably be a limit on the number of special traits we should be allowed. I've got 2 but already I feel like I'm overpowering my dude.

Also, I probably missed it but do we get a finisher and signature move to start with? Or do we need to buy them? IF we need to buy them then obviously ignore my selections below, otherwise I've got one of each listed.

This should be fun.
