New Mod - As Real As It Gets

Hi all,

Just thought I'd put the word out about our new mod. We have been working on this mod diligently since the editor came out. There are only 2 of us working on it, and as yet, we only have 1 copy of the game, so it has taken a while to get to this stage. This mod is made on a pretty huge scale.

A bit about us: Andy and I (Emmy) are a couple from Lancs, England. We live together and share a real passion for MMA. Andy has watched MMA since November 1993. I have been watching for 4 years (since I met Andy). We have seen live events from the UFC, down to small promotions like WCFC (who only ever had 1 event, but did have Bas Rutten commentating!) Our love for the sport has driven us to make this mod, which has been a long haul, but also a lot of fun.

It is a real world mod, which starts in November 1993. This is the date the UFC started, and was really the birth of MMA. When the game starts out, there are 4 promotions UFC, Pancrase, Shooto and Desafio. By the time you get to 2007, there will be 41 active promotions (providing none have gone bankrupt during that time )

As of today, there are 2076 people in the game, all real people, with custom stats based on their record and abilities. Nobody has a default template, everyone has been hand edited to give realistic performance. People have different opinions on how good people should be, so we have tried to be as fair and objective as possible, taking records, titles and sheer skill into consideration. I hope that we can make most of you happy though. One important thing to note is that all fighters start with no experience, as we have them debuting in the month of their very first fight. This means that you can build anyone you want to, and make them a champ, if you get it right.

Play tests have gone well, showing that there enough fighters for the early days, but obviously more are going to be needed to take you to the later stages in the game.

We are in the process of putting faces and bodies to people at the moment. Unfortunately, as there is probably going to be around 10,000 fighters in the database when it is finally complete, we are unable to use real fighter pics. It just isnt feasable, especially since a lot of the fighters don't appear to have pictures anyway! We are just trying to make the faces that come with the database fit people as best we can. If anyone has any pics that are in the same style as the default database ones that we can use, that would be great. As you can tell, there is going to be quite a few duplicates here. Any help is appreciated, and obviously full credit would be given. Also, if anyone can make renders for real fighters that are in the same style as the default database, that would be great. Also, we really need more japanese males!

One decision we have made is to put people like Bruce and Michael Buffer, G-Man etc into the game as commentators. There is no place for ring announcers but we feel that these people deserve recognition for their contribution to the sport, so we have made them colour commentators.

I hope that at least some people are interested in this mod. Within a few wekks we hope to have a work in progress released later this month. We are just trying to get more fighters in. We have all the companies, sponsors, ppv and tv stations, commentators, owners, logos, belts etc. It really is just the fighters that are left. It is still a work in progress but hopefully it will appeal to some of you. Please post any comments or criticisms here, and we will gladly respond and do what we can.

i would also love to get my hands on just the data without fighter pictures. this sounds like an amazing mod--thank you both for the work you've put into this.

you should edit the mods start date from november 93 to december 93 since that is the month the ufc started not november

Unfortunately we can't release a version of the database just yet, as we have found a few issues that need tweaking. We hope to have a version released in the next 2 weeks.

I have done extensive research into the start date of the UFC, which was the 12th November 1993. The confusion probably comes from American and English translations of the date, as in england the date format is dd/mm/yy and in america it is mm/dd/yy.

I don't even follow MMA vrey much in real life but I have to say I'm pretty damn interested in this. Worker pictures aren't essential if the gameplay itself is good. A great mod should be able to inspire people to help you out, so releasing the data when it's ready could theoretically speed up the whole process.

It sounds like you've put a lot of work into this, I look forward to playing.

As a long time MMA fan, since the beginning of UFC. I believe pics add more then you would think to gameplay, only face pics are really necessary and only for the most prolific fighters, Ive asked tc66tc if he could help you out in that regard, Andy and Emmy. There is already a good library going. Cheers!

Thanks for the input. I do hear what you are saying and we will certainly look into it. It is not something we will be able to achieve immediately but we will try to implement it in the future, thanks for the input.


*Edit I have just run your idea past ANdy, and we have decided that if we can get some real face pics, we will add them to a future release. There will be 2 versions when this happens- one with a mixture of real life and fake pics and the other just with fake pics. We hope that this can satisfy everyone.

you are correct... for some odd reason i keep thinking it happened in december

i was just having a conversation with somebody about this and could not get it out of my head that the first event happened december 12th 1993... i guess it's just been so long i don't remember anymore

I thought I was pretty knowledgeable when it came to MMA and it's beginnings but I don't believe I've ever even heard of Desafio, so now I'm off to look it up.
