That was about time, after all that head butting! 2:0 01:14 A nasty gash has opened on the right eyelid of Conn and it's bleeding badly. 2:0 01:14 A cut in the first round inevitably leads to problems later on in the fight. 2:0 01:14 * Conn seems to be having some difficulty seeing. It's not that he's bleeding all that badly but the location of the cut - over the eye - makes it a bit more serious. And talk about timing, the referee has stepped in and momentarily stopped the fight. He's looking at the cut above Conn's eye and is now leading him toward the ringside physician. 2:0 01:14 * The referee is notifying the judges that the cut is the result of an intentional head butt. Now he'll take further action against Marciano. 2:0 01:14 * The Referee has stopped the fight and leads Conn to the ringside doctor. The doctor is up on the apron and doing a thorough examination of [FtrB]'s cut.* That's it! Referee Kimmons is waving it off. This fight is over! He needs to throw that punch more often. 7:0 01:14 Rocky Marciano takes a long look at Walker to see if he's playing possum. Marciano is starting to pour it on so he must believe that he's really hurt Walker. 7:0 01:22 A cross to body by Marciano gets through. 9:0 01:22 Marciano senses that he can end this fight now if he can just land a few more punches. 9:0 01:36 Marciano misses with what looked like a backhand. He's lucky. If that had landed, he might have drawn a warning. 9:0 01:47 No one is going to confuse Marciano with a ballerina, but at least he isn't just standing still. 9:0 02:01 * Walker is smothered in a barrage of punches! He's down!!! 9:0 02:03 O'Brien begins the count over Buddy Walker as Marciano moves to a neutral corner.. 16:0 02:03 1... 16:0 02:04 2... 16:0 02:05 3... 16:0 02:06 4... 16:0 02:06 * Walker manages to rise from that knockdown as O'Brien gives him the mandatory standing 8 count. 16:0 02:07 5... 16:0 02:08 6... 16:0 02:09 7... 16:0 02:10 8... 16:0 02:10 O'Brien is allowing the fight to go on as he motions the fighters together. 16:0 02:10 Buddy Walker was stopped cold by that punch! Marciano has a reputation as a great finisher. Let's see if he can live up to it! 16:0 02:23 Rocky Marciano misses with that cross. 16:0 02:34 Marciano moves in at an angle, trying to cut off the ring on Walker. 16:0 02:43 Marciano misses with the left and then fails to connect with the right as well. 16:0 02:54 Marciano tries to work his way inside but he can't do it. 16:0 03:00 Walker pins Marciano's arms against his body stopping him from throwing any punches. 16:0 03:00 O'Brien is shouting at Buddy Walker to break! 16:0 03:00 Forget the sweet science, boxing fans love a knockdown as their approval of that last round clearly demonstrates. 18:0 Round 3 0:00 Walker didn't sit in the corner between rounds and he comes out quickly to begin Round 3. 0:0 0:10 Walker moves into a neutral corner. 0:0 0:14 Rocky Marciano throws a straight right that glances off the shoulder of Walker but it's enough to keep him off-balance. 0:0 0:22 Walker retreats into the far left corner. 0:0 0:26 Marciano and Walker are in a clinch, O'Brien hollers at them to break and start fighting. 0:0 0:31 Walker works his way free! 0:0 0:35 Some nice infighting ends with Walker getting an uppercut in. 0:2 0:52 Walker usues his legs to avoid Marciano's punches. 0:2 0:55 Walker bangs the uppercut home. 0:4 0:55 * Oh! That last shot has opened a cut on Marciano because there's blood flowing from somewhere. 0:6 0:55 * A bad cut on the bridge of Marciano's nose is causing blood to run down both sides of Marciano's face. It looks bad but at least it isn't above an eye. 0:6 0:55 * What was once just a trickle of blood is much more noticeable now as Marciano's face looks like it lost a fight with a razor blade. It's a good thing that the bleeding isn't over an eye or this fight would be in jeopardy. And it still may be, as Referee O'Brien has now halted the contest and is leading Rocky Marciano toward the ring doctor's position to get a second opinion on the severity of the bleeding. 0:6 0:55 * The referee won't stop the fight on his own if the reason for the stoppage directly has to do with a cut or swelling; he'll always consult the ringside doctor. And it looks like, in this case, we're going to see some more boxing because the physician has given his okay to let the fight continue. Both fighters are assuming their positions and the timer has restarted here in Round 3 as the fighters approach one another. 0:6 01:11 Walker wraps up Marciano. 0:6 01:16 O'Brien has to separate the two... 0:6 01:27 Walker takes a hard jab to the face from Marciano 3:6 01:36 Walker moves into the left corner. 3:6 01:41 Marciano dips as if to launch a body shot, then goes upstairs with a quick hook to the head that puts Walker back on his heels! 7:6 01:41 Walker appears to have been staggered by that punch... 7:6 01:45 That knockdown that occurred last round hasn't made Walker change his style. 7:6 01:55 Marciano just delivered a wake-up call!!! He really caught Walker with a sharp combination! 11:6 01:55 Walker took far too many hard shots from Marciano in that flurry and he is hurt! 11:6 02:04 Marciano doesn't have to look for Walker this round. He is right there in front of him. 11:6 02:20 Rocky Marciano is holding on to Walker. He seems to be taking a breather. 11:6 02:30 The fighters separate after a clinch. 11:6 02:43 Buddy Walker holds his arms up in disgust as Rocky Marciano holds him around his waist. 11:6 02:48 Referee O'Brien has to separate the two... 11:6 02:53 Marciano is staying at the center of the ring. 11:6 02:58 He is bobbing and weaving as he moves forward. 11:6 03:00 We're at the 3:00 mark and that brings this round to an end. 10:6 Round 4 0:00 As the bell sounds for the final round, it looks as if the scorecards will determine the outcome of this fight. 0:0 0:07 Marciano is ready to go. The cut on the bridge of nose he suffered won't be a factor at the beginning of the round because his corner man has the bleeding stopped. 0:0 0:14 Marciano fires away but finds nothing but air. 0:0 0:16 Not much steam behind Walker's jab, but it scores nonetheless. 0:2 0:16 Walker last connect snapped back the head of Marciano. And it looks like it has reopened Marciano's cut. 0:2 0:16 Blood streams down the face of Marciano as the gash on the bridge of his nose has, apparently, been reopened. 0:2 0:16 * The two fighters are circling one another. Walker looks like he's trying to target the bleeding that has become much more noticeable on the face of Rocky Marciano. The referee has also taken a sudden interest in the claret flowing down the face of Marciano and we're going to get a temporary - at least we hope it will be - halt in the action. The referee has called time and wants the doc at ringside to take a close look at Marciano's injury. Fortunately, none of the bleeding is above the fighter's eyes or matters would be much more serious. 0:2 0:16 * After some dabbing and swabbing and talking to the fighter, the doctor has concluded that the fight needn't be stopped. He's going to allow the action to continue. The referee is pointing to where he wants Marciano to stand and motioning for Walker to back up a little. Now O'Brien is calling time-in, and this fight is going to get back underway here in Round 4. 0:2 0:25 Eddie Inabagsky knows Walker lost that last round, but he took the postive approach between rounds. 0:2 0:26 Marciano tastes Walker's jab 0:4 0:35 Walker is pinned in his own corner... 0:4 0:40 It's a sweet uppercut by Marciano! He snapped Walker's head straight back with that punch! 4:4 0:40 Walker is going to need to regroup after that blow... 4:4 0:52 Marciano has Walker cornered! 4:4 0:52 Both fighters are exchanging blows! Walker scored more on that exchange. 6:7 01:14 Marciano just comes up short with the cross. 6:7 01:23 Walker retreats into a neutral corner. 6:7 01:27 Marciano fires a volley of punches but Walker was already moving laterally and was out of harm's way. 6:7 01:34 Both fighters move back to ring center. 6:7 01:39 Marciano is jockeying for position as he tries to force Walker back into the corner. 6:7 01:52 Walker rips off a nice right-left combination to the head. 6:9 02:08 Walker is receiving a lot of encouragement from his corner. If this helps win fights, he has a real good shot tonight. 6:9 02:15 Marciano lands a devastating cross! 11:9 02:15 Buddy Walker is reeling.. 11:9 02:24 Both fighters are pawing with the jab, trying to find an opening. Marciano digs a quick hook into the exposed side of Walker. 13:9 02:24 Marciano senses he has Walker in trouble and he is pouring it on! 13:9 02:37 Marciano is just missing by a hair with his punches. 13:9 02:44 Marciano has Walker trapped! 13:9 02:44 There's a lead right hand that finds its mark. That can be a dangerous punch if Marciano can land a solid one. 15:9 02:44 Marciano is raining blows down on Walker, who is obviously hurt. Marciano wants to take the decision out of the hands of the judges and he has a chance to do just that! 15:9 02:57 Marciano swings...and misses. 15:9 03:00 The bell sounds ending the final round and now the scorecards will determine the outcome of this fight. 17:9 Fight Result Howard Leigh has the call... Ladies and Gentlemen, the judges have tallied their scorecards and here is your decision... Manuel Maritxalar, Spain scores the bout 40 to 36 Juan Carlos Palmieri, Argentina scores the bout 40 to 36 Jean Lapointe, Canada scores the bout 40 to 35 The winner by unanimous decision is Rocky Marciano! Co-Feature Rocky Marciano (6-1-1) Vs Buddy Walker (79-29-5) Rocky Marciano won by way of decision in 4 rounds in a fight that almost was won by Walker. Marciano suffered a cut on the bridge of his nose early into round 3 which the doctor stopped to look at twice during the course of the bout. It was a nasty looking cut and was bleeding heavily from Marciano's nose, if it had been a cut above the eye or anywhere else the doctor surely would have ended the fight. Main Event Maxie Shapiro (87-29-7) Vs Sonny Boy West (23-3-0) Sonny Boy West beat Maxie Shapiro in tonight's Main Event card and earned the respect of the boxing community when he beat Shapiro. Shapiro who was ahead slightly going into round 6 of the scheduled 10 was tagged with a left hook that put the veteran down. Shapiro would get up only to be knocked down twice more, ending the fight at 2:47 in the 6th round. Buddy Walker Post Fight interview: Rocky Marciano won the fight plain and simple he can punch but that's pretty much all he can do. He is clumsy and easy to hit but he just keeps comming and comming the kid is a bull. If the fight would have went 6 rounds I would have won due to the cut, I think I saw a midget climb out of his nose....one didn't? well then one damn well could have the cut was so big. Rocky Marciano Post Fight Interview: None of Mr. Walker's punches really stunned me he is an aggresive fighter and he knows how to exploit a weakness if he sees one. Once the cut was opened it's as if every punch he threw at me hit right on the cut and would re-open it. |
