Default Computer Comparison Help

I had the grand idea of building my own computer, but since a student loan fell through (long story that has me getting screwed over) I have revisited the idea of just building a Dell. I don't game on the computer outside of WMMA, TEW, etc. I mainly just enjoy the wonders of the internet and media (movies, music, etc.)

Basically, below you'll find my options, give me your opinions and thoughts to help me decide as sometime in the coming year I'll be making my selection.

The 3rd dell build is similiar to the pc setup i've got and it runs normal stuff like the internet well, TEW runs extremely fast and it can run games like Crysis and Prince Of Persia nicely.

Only thing i'd say is try to get a Nvidia graphics card as I'd say they're better than ATI.

My suggestion....Get rid of Intel and switch to AMD. I was an Intel fan until i just built my Desktop PC about 4 weeks ago. The difference is unnoticable and I have an amazing system using the same 4 gigs of gskill and AMD ASUS MB and AMD Atholon 2.9 ghz dual core set up. I saved myself $300 for equalivate in AMD rather than Intel. I also overclocked my system to do 3.1 without a problem.

Also just so you know I built my wives PC about a year ago with an Intel chip and MB and am happy with hers but would not have if I knew what I do know about AMD now. This is my first time with AMD but would never change back due to the savings I have and the speed in which I am able to run.

Either way good luck and building yourself is so much better as long as you don't have to pay for the OS. Use Linux or a hacked version of 64bit Vista(Yeah).

Not to slam you on your choice of video card but I would recommend using a Powercolor because of the low cost with the name brand chipset. I have 1 on both my systems and they are amazing.

My current computer is very outdated (60gig HD, 512 RAM says it all without even going into processors). But the processor is AMD. The AMD/Intel processor debate is virtually null now with dual and quad core processors by Intel. As you said, you may be able to save price, but not performance as the quad-cores are currently the best option.

However, outside of building my own, that is a moot point because with Dell you don't get that choice. When you go through their website and customize your own you get set choices. Same with benjacko's statement of switching video cards in the Dell. If they gave me more choices, I'd choose something different perhaps.

As for my custom build. That is more there for pricing purposes as if I were building my own I'd select the best I could the moment I was set to purchase. Dell offers the 4yr warranty which is a huge plus in case something happens. Whereas in a custom build if something goes wrong you have to troubleshoot to figure it out and then pray you even have a warranty still in effect for that part.

Still looking for opinions on what you all think is the best for me to go with.

Currently rocking an AMD Phenom Quad-Core. The debate rages on.

The Core i7 smokes anything AMD has currently.

the core i7 smokes ANYTHING currently. I have a Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme 3.0 and a brand spanking new Nvidia 9800GSO if your building a gamming rig you have to get a cooling unit as most of the new video cards need one. I have a Vigor Gaming Monsoon which beats the pants of anyone!

Wasn't directed at you, that's why I quoted darthsiddus2. He said, "if your building a gamming rig".

Obviously from the builds you can see power still won't be much of an issue, I was just stating what my overall use is.

I really wish Dell had some options around the same price that would allow me to put in the stuff into #2 that #3 is better at. I mean, I know there is going to be a second bay so I could have a dual-drive if it were offered, and so on.

Benchmarks or GTFO.

EDIT: I retract my prior statement of 'benchmarks or GTFO' after... looking at benchmarks.

If you're comfortable with constructing a computer, you should check out Tigerdirect.com's barebone systems at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...Id_31_B69-0047

This approach may save you some money.
